Denis Levasseur says it’s all his fault that Portal Players Dramatic Society has taken on The Wizard of Oz as its latest musical. “I came home one day and said to my wife, ‘I think we should bring Wizard of Oz to Portal Players.’ But I would only do it if she produced it with me.” This Friday, Feb. 21, the community will get its first glimpse of Levasseur’s dream when The Wizard of Oz takes to the stage at the Capitol Theatre. Levasseur is co-directing the musical with Elliot Drew. Although Drew is a veteran of stage productions and musicals—he and Levasseur worked together on Jesus Christ, Superstar and The Rocky Horror Show—he said they really had no idea what an undertaking it would be when they decided a year ago to bring Oz to the stage. “We wanted to do something bigger and better than what has been done before,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of new things for the Capitol (see sidebar). For us, it’s new and exciting and there’s new software we’re learning, and new technology. “We’ve put in a lot of work that will benefit new shows that come in here. We’re breaking ground on the technological side.” There are also many new faces in the cast, as well as a good mix

of veterans, Levasseur said. Teresa Drew (Miss Gulch, Wicked Witch of the West) has played an integral role in bringing Wizard of Oz to the stage. She and a team of four including Yvette Deveau, Carrera Schroeder, Gittan Klemetsrud and Lori Shone-Kusmin was responsible for makeup; and the fantasy part of Oz was challenging, said Drew. “We’ve literally been practicing the makeup for months,” Drew said. They used a new siliconebased makeup that actors cannot sweat off; Drew also created silicone casts of the actors’ faces and purchased an airbrush system for faster application. Known for her handiwork with stage makeup, Drew said techniques have changed dramatically since she earned a diploma in makeup 20 years ago from the Vancouver Film School. “Airbrush was never part of the training. Silicone, makeup, they’ve all changed,” she said. She also created the backdrops, nine of which are projected onto a screen. “This was my biggest art project to date,” she said. “When I designed it I thought ‘colouring book’. Kansas is ‘real’.” Join the fantasy starting this Friday, Feb. 21. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Other dates include Feb. 22 and 28 and March 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15. Sunday matinees are Feb. 23 and March 9. With the acquisition earlier this year of a new digital sound board, Wienold is able to operate projections, sound effect and music tracks—all from his laptop.

“The show is contingent on this working,” he says. That’s why he has a backup computer as well. “For me, it’s all abut the timing and following cues in the script.” Simply put, the digital sound board has computer input that gives the option for surround sound in the theatre. Each actor in Wizard of Oz is equipped with wireless microphones, so they can be heard even from the last row.

Independent schools in the Alberni Valley are waiting for the fallout from School District 70’s Grade reconfiguration and school closure talks. According to School District 70 superintendent Cam Pinkerton there are more than 1,300 fewer students in the public school district this year than a decade ago. “We have lost students to John Paul II Catholic School and to Haahuupayak although not all of them,” Pinkerton said at a trustees meeting in January. “One of the reasons they are leaving is because of stability.”

The district doesn’t have hard numbers on how many kids exactly it has lost to independent schools. But a calculation using school participation rates gives an idea. The participation rate is the number of students in a catchment area who attend a public school in that area. In Port Alberni, the rate is below 50 per cent; on the West Coast it is above 90 per cent. “Only John Howitt [Elementary] is above 50 per cent in the Valley,” Pinkerton said. Low participation rate can be attributed in part to factors like students who travel to another catchment area to attend school, or who are home schooled. “But some

independent school focused on teaching the Nuu-chah-nulth culture and language. It is located on the other side of the Somass River Bridge on Tseshaht First Nation territory. Haahuupayak has a capacity of 144 students and there are 99 enrolled this year, financial administrator Brenda Sayers said. Enrolment, which is open to both aboriginal and nonaboriginal students,

has fluctuated between 84-100 students in the past three years. School officials are keeping an eye on the progress of district school closure and reconfiguration talks, Sayers said. “The district has called a meeting with some groups in town and the school is sending representatives to participate.” The school teaches in a K-6 format and officials are pondering

switching to a K-7 format next year, “but it will depend on what comes out of this meeting and other factors,” she said. Funding for offreserve students has increased, and along with a new funding transfer agreement with the Tseshaht First Nation, Haahuupayak is on more level playing field with district schools. “Now for instance we can offer more special education assistance in class than we did before,” she said. Across town, John Paul II Catholic School offers faith-based education in an independent setting, principal Kathy Korman said. There are 95 students enrolled at John Paul this year and enrolment has increased in the last few years, Korman said. The school teaches in a K-8 format. Officials at JPII are watching the district talks. “But we don’t know how it will impact us because that process isn’t finished yet, so I

can’t comment at this time,” Korman said. Home schooling is an option for parents, but switching to it midstream—rather than starting a child out home schooling in kindergarten—would be unusual, said Gary Robertson, who home schools his five children. People usually make decisions early on about home school or public school and then stay with it, he said. There are approximately 150 students in the Alberni Valley who are home schooled, Robertson said. The district’s plan to close and reconfigure could change things though. “This may be the thing that pushes people to look for other educational options,” he said. special program funded by the United Way and taught by the Red Cross is allowing Alberni District Secondary School leadership students to teach younger students what bullying is and how it impacts others. ‘Beyond the Hurt’ is an anti-bullying education program that was taught by the Red Cross to 19 Grade 12 leadership students at Alberni District Secondary School last December. Now certified antibullying trainers, the leadership students have fanned out across the school district to bring their message to elementary and middle school students. The students were at AW Neill Middle School on Feb. 19 and were also slated to visit Maquinna and Alberni Elementary schools as well that day. “Our students are everywhere every day doing something on bullying. They’re busy but it’s a positive busy,” said ADSS leadership teacher Mike Roberts. According to the Canadian Council on Learning, bullying has three defining characteristics: the behaviour occurs repeatedly; there is the intent to do physical or emotional harm; and there is a power difference between the aggressor and the victim. Bullying is also a form of child abuse, the council notes. In Port Alberni, the school workshops are the culmination of training the students took last December. According to the Red Cross website, ‘Beyond the Hurt’ is a youth facilitated program focussed on bullying prevention among children ages 11 and older. The program teaches students what bullying is, how to

recognize it, strategies to prevent it and how to report it. “They really get a good sense of what healthy relationships are, and what emotional and playground bullying is,” Roberts said. School District 70 officials solicited interest in the program to teachers in Alberni Valley schools last fall. “The response we got was overwhelming,” Roberts said. “There was clearly a need to have this discussion.” According to a Red Cross official, the application from ADSS noted that teachers were seeing an increase in bullying and in relationship violence.“I haven’t seen those numbers personally so I can’t comment on them,” Roberts said. Bullying has changed with the times. “When I was in school it was faceto-face, now though it’s done from behind a screen,” he said. “I was surprised when we were in a Grade 5

class how much they knew about cyberbullying, Twitter and hashtags.” ADSS leadership students brought their message to kids at AW Neill on Feb. 19. Each grade has planned a series of initiatives leading up to Anti-Bullying Day on Feb. 26 including acts of kindness, guest speakers, and a poster campaign, AW Neill vice principal Ron Behnke said. Behnke agreed that bullying has persisted despite increased public awareness and initiatives against it. “Bullying is in the culture. We need to work at it when opportunities present themselves, and they present themselves all the time.” At ADSS, Roberts said the new high school has had an impact on the school’s social culture. “I’ve seen a change, big time, from the old school,” he said. “The common area, where students gather for lunch for instance, has mixed people and they get along better. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than it was.” EJ Dunn Middle School has been in anti-bullying mode for the past several weeks, principal Steve Brown said. Students watched Tagged, a show with an anti-bullying message performed by the Green Thumb Theatre. As well, students are scheduled to work with the ADSS group,

and a guest speaker is also being brought in. And lastly, students will be working on a series of reading and writing initiatives on Feb. 26. “This is something that requires a constant message. Not just one day but continuous events,” Brown said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Put on pink and be proud Who provoked a school strike? On Wednesday, Feb. 26, cities across Canada, including Port Alberni, will be awash in pink to recognize Anti-Bullying Day. Why pink, you ask? It all started when a boy wore a pink T-shirt to school one day and was ridiculed for it. Two of his classmates, also male, didn’t think too much of the mean-spirited harrassment the boy received, so they distributed pink shirts to all the boys in their school to protest the bullying. The gesture, and the pink T-shirts, caught on, and now Pink Shirt Day is a national event that has also spread south of the border. Bullying happens in schools, workplaces and on the Internet. It is not a new issue. But people are finally talking about it, getting it out in the open. And that’s the first step to addressing it—letting kids and adults alike know that bullying is not acceptable.

ICTORIA – I made an error in a column two weeks ago about the latest court ruling in favour of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. I referred to an “illegal” strike in 2012, and was quickly reminded that this teacher walkout was sanctioned by the Labour Relations Board. After months of withholding report cards and refusing to meet with administrators, the union went to the LRB to seek permission for a full-scale strike. They got their wish, with authorization under essential services rules for a three-day strike in the first week, and one day a week after that until the end of the school year or a settlement was reached. For the record, the last illegal BCTF strike was in 2005, in defiance of a B.C. Supreme Court order that resulted in a $500,000 fine

against the union. That was the same year BCTF lawyers won a split B.C. Court of Appeal ruling allowing teachers to bring political propaganda into classrooms. Two out of three judges decided this was appropriate to preserve their freedom of expression. The authorized threeday strike went ahead in March 2012. Regular readers may recall my reports of students being indoctrinated in classrooms and in some cases sent out as union pickets, and of the strongarming of unionized government office staff here in Victoria to make them join a rally on the legislature lawn. This was the strike that, according to the current media and political narrative, the provincial cabinet conspired to bring about. This notion is central to the Jan. 27 ruling of Justice Susan

Griffin that orders the B.C. government to attempt to reconstruct the world of 2001. Government lawyers filed an application with the B.C. Court of Appeal on Friday to suspend parts of this ruling. Imposing Griffin’s terms would cause “irreparable harm to the public interest of unprecedented magnitude,” they said in arguments backed up by a series of affidavits from superintendents who have to keep B.C.’s war-weary public schools running. In Surrey, returning to 2002 conditions would add $40 million to the district payroll in year one. That’s one of 60 school districts. The government’s submission includes affidavits from superintendents around the province on its likely impact. Here’s a partial list: Cancellation of specialty

programs for vulnerable youth, construction of portables to meet arbitrary class size restrictions, transfer of some students to other schools, closure of daycare and Strong Start preschool programs to free up space reallocated over the years, layoff of non-teaching staff, and cancellation of school participation in the international student program. Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister Peter Fassbender have begun to push back against the conspiracy theory that has taken hold, pointing out that when the BCTF finally did get permission to strike, the cabinet of the day acted to prevent it. Here’s a recap. In late February 2012, nearly 28,000 teachers (90 per cent) voted to go to the full strike allowed by the LRB. The government tabled legislation to impose a cooling-off period with provision for steep fines on the union for further strike action.

Re: council pay raises. Raising councils stipend will benefit future councils? Seniors are already struggling to pay yearly increasing taxes, hydro etc. and yet the mayor of Port Alberni seems to think we have to get people to run for council with more money instead of what they can contribute to the city. Isn’t this getting paid for the job before they earn it? Maybe quit comparing us to other cities that may have more income or better management than ours. Where is cash from mining? To the Editor,

Cuts in education should not be happening if what big industry and the mining association of B.C. says and does to promote mining in our province. They have tried to assure the public that the

millions of dollars from mining that goes to our government should benefit the residents of B.C. by funding education and other programs. Mining Association vice-president, Angela Waterman, wrote a letter published in the Comox Valley Record Aug. 28, 2012 defending the largely unwanted and controversial Raven Coal mine proposed above the crystal clear waters of Baynes Sound, where one of B.C.’s most sustainable food industries has existed for more than a 100 years, contributing millions annually to the local economy. Her letter stated, “Mining contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to government revenues that can be used to fund important programs like health and education”. Since she wrote these words, headlines across the province read, “School closures one way to cut hydro bills says B.C. education minister”, “B.C. government cutting $70M from advanced education”, “Aboriginal children’s programs in B.C. brace for funding cuts”, “Spending cuts

in B.C. school districts feed worries about special education”, “BCTF decries second decade of cuts in B.C. Schools”, “B.C. government cuts $16M in education funding”, “School closures confirmed in Parksville-Qualicum Beach”, “Cashstrapped Alberni school district looks at closures”. Where are the hundreds of millions of dollars that the government receives from the mining industry going, if not to education, or health for that matter, in our province? This is just one industry, so what of the plethora of other industries that give the government of B.C. hundreds of millions of dollars as well?

Push is on for more rail talks To the Editor,

Re: We cannot go backwards when it comes to rail and ICF, Letters, Feb. 13. With rhetoric seeming to be heating up on the railway front, a movement has begun to try to help things get on track (pun intended). Readers can go to

www.vifreightbyrail. ca and send, or sign up to be included in, a weekly letter to VIA Rail and Southern Railway of Vancouver Island (SVI) encouraging the two parties to conclude their negotiations. Whether those negotiations produce an agreement or not, who knows. However, VIA Rail and SVI have both responded to the first two weeks of letters with VIA insisting the money is not enough and SVI providing a BC Safety Authority letter saying it is. Clearly there is an impasse in these negotiations and the public, and railway, is effectively being held hostage. This is not fair to the provincial, federal and local governments that agreed to the funding, nor is it fair to the people of Vancouver Island. Two years is far too long for any negotiation, especially when there are provisions for mediation. So if readers would like things to just get over and done with, I encourage them to go to www.vifreightbyrail. ca and participate in the weekly letter campaign pressuring these two companies to talk. will be sent until a resolution is achieved.

Feb. 13, is expected to conclude in either March or April, a news release noted. The 15 stores will hoist new Save-OnFoods banners and one Cooper’s Foods sign. Port Alberni’s store will become a Save-On-Foods. “We are thrilled to be able to welcome these stores, along with their existing team members and customers to our group,” says Darrell Jones, president. “By welcoming more than 1,500 of the best grocers in North America to our team, we are in a great position to continue growing our business in these locations.” The sales are part of a Canadian Competition Bureau order issued to Sobeys in October to sell 23 Safeway locations. Overwaitea

is purchasing 15 store locations in B.C. and Alberta with today’s announcement. Other stores acquired in the deal include four Safeway stores in Victoria; one each in Duncan, Ladysmith, Tsawwassen, New Westminster and Fort McMurray. Also included in the deal are Thrifty Foods stores in Nanaimo, New Westminster and Abbotsford. Sobey stores in Canmore and Cochrane, Alberta are also part of the deal. The Safeway store in Courtenay will be closing its doors as of May 10 and is not included in the Overwaitea purchase. High school students in Port Alberni are learning the A-B-Cs of agriculture in a new Grade 12 course. Sustainable Resources 12: Agriculture this semester will offer 29 students at Alberni District Secondary School agricultural theory and allows them hands-on experience with local farmers. Students also receive science course credits. “Food security and sustainability issues are a growing concern with people today,” course instructor Kirsten Abercrombie said. “If you think about it, you feed yourself three times a day so you should be concerned about where your food comes from and how it’s made.” Students will learn about everything from soil biology and water management, to policy issues and local

agricultural issues. A section of land at ADSS has been set aside for agricultural students to design, plant and grow their own vegetable plots.

“It’s winter so we’ll be working on a lot of theory and basics,” Abercrombie said. “But once the weather gets better we’ll be outside in groups

tending to the plots.” The idea for the course came about during the building of the new high school, Abercrombie said. A group of teachers who

were avid gardeners talked about the idea of a school garden. A gardener herself, Abercrombie researched the curriculum database

and found the course. “I asked [former principal] Mike Ruttan if I could pursue it and he supported it,” she said. The course is off the ground but it still has challenges. The garden had to be scaled back. And the course’s resources are limited. “We would welcome donations of any tools or anything that would help us,” Abercrombie said. Students will also undertake an initiative that will see the work with local farmers and farms, gaining first-hand knowledge and expertise on local agricultural issues. The class is visiting Leda Organic Farm as well as Arrowvale Farm and others as

part of the plan. “Local farmers understand the need to foster a passion for agriculture in the young,” Abercrombie said. Grade 12 student Makenna Cyr is taking the course because she has a passion for agriculture that predates the program. Cyr, 17, lives on a five-acre hobby farm with her parents, and has been a member of the local 4-H club for the past seven years. Her passion goes beyond 4-H though, as she has worked with the BC Ministry of Agriculture and BC Agriculture in the Classroom. “People need to know what organic really means, or what hormones are in your beef. “People need to understand what these things mean.” Students also need to learn that they can influence the agricultural industry, she added. “Farmers grow what consumers want,” she said.

A former Port Alberni artist now living in Ucluelet has created the official poster for the 28th annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival in March. Kelly Deakin Carter was inspired to present an 18-foot by 24-foot piece of pyrographic art on plywood, an interesting oeuvre d’art illustrating our colourful West Coast marine life. Pyrography being the art of burning a design on wood with a heated metallic point, gives this year’s chosen art a unique depth, an appealing dimension. Carter was born in Nelson but has lived

on Vancouver Island (Port Alberni and Ucluelet areas) since 1968 where she moved with her parents at the age of seven. An artist at heart, she has drawn since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Carter tried her hand at different medias, from photography to pencil drawing and painting but when she started to burn wood, she discovered her passion. “My heart truly belongs to pyrographic art,” she says. Carter never sketches anything before she starts to burn. She just works on a piece, stands back, studies it and burns again; a work of inspiration where

How did an intelligent adult come to believe that this toxic cocktail of “accepted” pharmaceuticals was safe? How is it that any intelligent society would allow its members to be led to believe this was true? And why is it that North Americans consume the lion’s share of pharmaceuticals as compared to our European counterparts? Hours of research later, I found a very large clue. A 2008 Canadian study by PhD candidate Marc-Andre Gagnon and Joel Lexchin, M.D. through York University showed that the U.S. pharmaceutical industry spends almost twice as much on drug promotion than it does on research and development. Also noted was an increase in the number of promotional meetings by these drug companies from 120,000 in 1998 to 371,000 in 2004. Everyday OTC drug use is being advertised into us through TV, internet and magazine ads. As a result, we have come to accept that the regular use of medications is both normal and safe. Even well intentioned parents regularly give their children these drugs to make them feel better without knowing the cumulative toxic effects on children’s systems. Gagnon and Lexchin use their study results “to argue in favor of changing priorities of the (pharmaceutical) industry.” As researchers they exposed the industry’s “dirty little secret”. Will this exposure make a difference during our lifetime? Only time will tell. Peace, Carl

Each year, in February, the Pacific Rim Art Society puts a call out to West Coast artists from Ucluelet, Tofino and Bamfield to submit their art for the next festival. In 2013, whale fest board members did not specify the media to be used for the 2014 poster. It was interesting to see the wide variety of art proposed, said Susan Payne of the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce. From paint, watercolour, digital, threedimensional arts to metal, every kind of art medium and style

was present. “It was a very hard decision for the board members to choose the one who will represent the best the West Coast communities”, Payne said. Born March 20, 1946, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the age of 67. Colleen was predeceased by her father David Rogers (1971), her mother Winona Rogers (1991), her brother Jim Thomas (2004), and her sister Charmaine Lemon (Nov 13, 2013). Colleen is survived by her husband Robert, son David and daughter Diana, siblings Lynn Heid (Bill Back), Darlene Thomas, Sharon Steele (Carl), George Rogers (Lindsay), Lesley Neville (Tom), John Rogers (Vicki) as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Bob and Colleen married on November 12, 1966. Colleen attended Beaver Creek Elementary, A W Neill and ADHS. Colleenâ€™s proudest moments of accomplishment were her children, her â€œoutstandingâ€? girl guide award, The Guild Cross for Bravery Colleen took pride in being an active member of the Beaver Creek Community Hall for over 25 years and never missing a meeting as well as running regular card games, dances and childrenâ€™s Halloween parties. Alberni Valley Bulldogs goalie Connor LaCouvee has been named the BCHL Player of the Week. for the week ending Feb. 16. The league announced the development Feb. 16. LaCouvee picked up a pair of wins to keep the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes alive. The Qualicum Beach, B.C. native stopped all 32 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over the Powell River Kings and he followed that with 35 saves in a 2-1 victory over the

Merritt Centennials. The 19-year-old netminder was named 1st Star in both games. He posted a 0.985 save percentage and a 0.50 goalsagainst average over the two games. Meanwhile in game play, the Cowichan Valley Capitals and the Bulldogs are in a dead heat for the Island Division’s final playoff spot with four games each remaining in the B.C. Hockey League season. The ‘Dogs gained a point on the Caps by beating the Merritt

Centennials 2-1 at Port Alberni Sunday while the Caps lost 4-3 in overtime to the Centennials Saturday night at Cowichan Arena. The Caps and Bulldogs have similar schedules to close out the season. Both play a home-and-home with Victoria and travel to Powell River. The Caps have the advantage over the ‘Dogs in the first two tiebreakers — most wins and a better headto-head record.

The Van Isle Ford Alberni Valley Midget Bulldogs have advanced to the Tier three hockey finals. The Bulldogs beat the Victoria Ice Hawks to advance. The finals will see the Bulldogs play the Sooke Thunderbirds. Game one takes place on Feb. 22 at the AV Multiplex, and game two goes on Feb. 23 at the Sooke Park arena. The teams will return to Alberni for game three if necessary.

ort Alberni will be represented well at the BC Winter Games coming later this month in Mission. The games begin Thursday, Feb. 20 and will wrap up on Sunday, Feb. 23. More than 1,800 participants are ready to go for the BC Winter Games, including nine from Port Alberni. They will be represented in Badminton, Figure Skating, and Women’s

Hockey. Sydney Dolling, Shay–Lee McConnell and Maryna MacDonald have earned the right to play for the U-16 Vancouver Island Women’s hockey team. There were more than 55 girls trying out to make this team and the trio, who all play for the Bantam A Bulldogs in the Alberni Valley Minor Hockey Association, were selected to the team. Kennedy Lavertu will look to have a

strong showing in the figure skating portion of the competition. Lavertu spent time last summer training in Edmonton and wound up winning a pair of gold medals in competitions towards the end of her summer training. There will also be five locals heading to the BC Winter Games for the badminton portion of the games. Declan Lenihan and Carson Rhodes have been named to the boys’ badminton team and Amy Barker and Kim Norn have been

named to the girls’ badminton team. Amber Santarelli will also be heading to the games as an alternate for the girls team. This will mark the first time that Mission has ever held the BC Winter Games and will look to the 2,500 volunteers to help make it a successful event. Opening ceremonies will take place on Feb. 20 at Mission Raceway Park. The competitions begin on Friday and will run through until Sunday, Feb. 23.

Alberni dominates Islands The ADSS boy’s wrestling team lived up to their motto “The Tradition Continues” by winning the Vancouver Island Secondary School Wrestling Championships for the 15th consecutive year. It was the 27th time in the past 32 years the Armada Boys came out on top. The ADSS boys finished with 76 points, more than double the 28 points accumulated by second place Esquimalt. Dover Bay Nanaimo were third with 26 points and Balleenas of Parksville were fourth with 21 points. Other top ten teams were Queen of Angels, Ucluelet, Cowichan, EJ Dunn, Timberline and Francis Kelsey. The ADSS Girls team were depleted by some injuries at the Islands and finished fourth with 15 points. Dover Bay of Nanaimo won the Girls title. Ucluelet and Dover Bay were

actually tied with 31 points however the Championship trophy was awarded to Dover Bay as a result of having more gold medals. Carihi of Campbell River were third with 22 points. Seven Alberni wrestlers claimed the gold medals in their respective weight classes. Grade 12 twin brothers Jesse (54 kg) and Jordan Wagner (57 kg) were outstanding each beating their opponents quickly in their respective finals by technical superiority. “Jesse and Jordan... have been so consistent throughout their high school careers,” said head coach James Messenger. “Jesse won his fifth Island title and Jordan his fourth today. There are very few wrestlers who have done that. They look very ready for the BC’s” Dean Leyland (ADSS 74 kg), Trevor Barker (ADSS 38kg), Isaac McDonald (Dunn

41kg), Lauren Barker (ADSS 57kg) and Michel Kurucz (ADSS 60kg) also claimed gold medals in their respective weight classes. Leyland won his second consecutive Island title after wrestling a very smart match against his opponent from Esquimalt in the 74 kg final. “Unfortunately Lauren and Michel went unchallenged in the tournament today. They won exhibition matches, which we set up to help prepare them for the competition expected at the BC’s,” head coach Chris Bodnar said. “Trevor and Isaac looked strong... Both boys could threaten for a medal at the Provincial Championships.” Four Alberni wrestlers won silver medals. Grade 11 wrestler Johannes Kulich, Grade 8 wrestlers Ravi Manhas (Dunn 38kg), Shane Leeper (Neill 48kg) and Aaron Badovinac

(Dunn 63 kg) all finished with silver medals. ADSS standouts Remi Wells and Christian Anderson were sidelined due to injury but qualified for BC’s through coaches’ petition based on their outstanding results this year. Coaches expect both Wells and Anderson to practice this week. Unfortunately Grade 11 ADSS standout Nolan Badovinac will not be ready by the BC’s after knee

surgery. The team hopes to have him back for the Nationals in April. With the Island Championships now behind them those local wrestlers who have qualified will devote their complete attention to preparing for the BC’s Feb. 26 – March 1 in Prince George. The ADSS Boys and Girls wrestling teams head to Prince George as the reigning four time BC Aggregate Champions.
