Straszak said the teachers’ work-to-rule action “was having a really significant impact on education” and the increase in pressure was part of the “political dynamic” of the longrunning dispute.

Attorney General Suzanne Anton said the Jan. 27 decision of B.C. Supreme Court is being appealed, and refused to comment further.

NDP education critic Rob Fleming said the premier and Education Minister Peter Fassbender have commented publicly on the decision in media interviews, and in letters sent to all teachers.

In her ruling, Justice Susan Griffin concluded that the B.C. government did not bargain in good faith with the BCTF. She struck down legislation restricting teacher bargaining of classroom conditions and imposed a $2 million penalty on the government.

Hometown Heroes are found in all parts of British Columbia Submitted

Pacific Western Brewing (PWB) Hometown Hero candidates have registered in all regions of BC as the brewery prepares to award bursaries to the first four heroes to be named later this month.

Budget good for Kootenays

Canada’s recovery from the recent global recession has been among the strongest in the world with over 1 million more Canadians now working than at the worst of the recession – the best job creation record among all G-7 countries, including Germany. But we all know there is still more to do. Too many Canadians are still looking for work and the global economic recovery remains fragile at best, especially in Europe and the United States. That’s why our Government is staying squarely focused on the economy. We’re moving forward with a positive plan that will help create jobs and grow our economy, all while keeping taxes low and remaining on track for balanced budgets in 2015.

keeping Canada on the right path for economic growth. This includes lowering taxes over 160 times, which will save the average Canadian family nearly $3,400 on their tax bill in 2014. We’ve also cut taxes for jobcreating businesses, allowing them to hire more workers, and have opened up new markets for Canadian goods and services, most recently through the historic CanadaEuropean Union Trade Agreement.

The recent budget from Ottawa was unbelievably good news for Kootenay-Columbia.

The Federal government allocated 391 million dollars for road, bridge and other repairs with in Parks Canada and a significant amount of that will go specifically to improvements to Glacier Nat’l Park. I will work with Parks Canada, and local government to ensure that we can get the best

improvements possible on this stretch of important highway.

The Search and Rescue volunteer tax credit will provide up to a $3,000 dollar credit for those who perform 200 hours of volunteer duty. This can be combined with hours accumulated with volunteer firefighter hours as well. These hard working men and women deserve this credit for all they do for their respective communities.

Unjustified cross border price discrimination is particularly important for communities like Creston, Fernie and Cranbrook.

This legislation is significant as we must ensure that prices for goods are fair on both sides of the border.

Interest free loans for those people who enter a Red Seal Trades apprentice program.

On top of the credits already available this is a great opportunity for those who want to enter the trades.

The government allocated $305 million to enhance high speed broadband networks to a target speed of five megabits per second in Rural and Northern Communities. I will work to have this established in the areas in Kootenay Columbia that are lacking in this area, such as Meadow Creek, Trout Lake and other areas.

“The Summer Works Program gave my business an opportunity we wouldn’t have been able to take on otherwise,” said owner Erin Summers. “The program administrators are extremely helpful, which makes it simple for businesses to participate. I would recommend the program to any business owner looking to add value to their business. Libby was a great addition to our team.”

Summer Works also helped Giv’er Shirtworks’ summer student, Libby Vanderschuit: “I found working at Giv’er Shirtworks to be very helpful. It is liberat-

ing to be in a workplace where you are surrounded by great people who encourage you to progress in your work. I had the freedom to create, which is essential for me. I am very thankful for the experience.”

To help businesses offer summer jobs to high school and postsecondary students, the program provides a wage subsidy of up to $8 per hour for entrylevel or career related positions. Since 2010, Summer Works has helped create up to 150 student jobs each summer in the Columbia Basin.

“Businesses benefit from the extra staff support and students earn money for school plus get valuable job experience – it’s positive for everyone involved,” said Sabrina Curtis, Director, Sector Initiatives at Columbia Basin Trust.

College of the Rockies administers the Summer Works Program. “Delivering

this program for the Trust is an excellent way for us to help students throughout the Basin, plus affect the development of local economies,” said Tracey Whiting, Manager, Continuing Education and Contract Training, College of the Rockies.

leaf. There’s no doubt about that urge you’re feeling: it is indeed time to do some spring cleaning.

Cleaning the house is exhausting work and many of us try to put it off for as long as we can.

And yet, our families’ health and our comfort are at stake. To make this big job a little bit easier, just take it one step at a time.

Construction Questions Can I Quote You on That?

by Menno Dueck If you think choosing a contractor or renovator should be based solely on a quote, you might want to rethink your strategy.

Janice and Eddy want a bathroom and two bedrooms in their basement and Janice sketches a layout of what they think would work for their family, along with notes on fixtures and finishes.

Eddy calls five different companies to get three responses; confirming the notion that some Kootenay companies have yet to buy into the concept of calling back potential customers!

Handy Handyman arrives twenty minutes late, takes a brief look at the sketch, notes and basement, and when Janice (who thrives on details) starts to explain to Handy what she envisions, Handy tells her to stop worrying, this isn’t his first reno. He gives them a verbal quote and says he can start tomorrow.

Rob Reno pulls up just on time and while Janice and Eddy take a look at Rob’s portfolio, Rob walks the basement adding accurate measurements to Janice’s layout.

When Janice asks Rob his opinion on the layout and choice of fixtures and finishes, he is quick to agree that her sketch and choices were fine and he can have a quote to them in a few days.

Carl Carpenter arrives ten minutes early and patiently waits in his truck for the appointed time.

It is immediately clear to Carl that Janice is not totally confident with her layout. He starts asking questions and as the discussion continues, Janice relaxes and asks him what he thinks of her ideas. Carl points out a more efficient use of space, explains the options for insulating and heating basement living space, and gives them ideas on ways to save money on fixtures and finishing without compromising quality. An hour later Janice and Eddy have a revised sketch.

A “to scale” drawing will be ready for them in a few days and once insulation, heating, fixtures and finishing is finalized a quote will follow in a week.

Handy’s quote was never considered; in fact Janice and Eddy can’t believe anyone would ever hire him. Rob, while having an extensive portfolio, asked few questions and didn’t seem to be interested in whether the finished product would truly meet their needs. In the end, Janice and Eddy chose to hire someone they felt had their best interests at heart; they wanted a relationship and a finished basement, not just a quote. Janice made the call to Carl.

Before I talk about the coming year, I want to take a moment to express thanks – on behalf of the Chamber Board and staff, the business community,

and the community more broadly – to Mike Adams, for his leadership this past year.

Mike took us in some exciting new directions in the areas of governance of our organization, in connecting with our membership, and in advocating for the needs of business.

He spent hundreds and hundreds of hours working on behalf of the business community and often ended up on the pointy end

of the stick … while at the same time building a house, renovating a building and moving his business to new premises, along with being a husband and a father to four young daughters.

I learned a lot from Mike in 2013, and despite what Jason Wheeldon might say, Mike’s shoes are big shoes to fill. A heartfelt thank you, Mike.

It’s my sincere honour to lead the Chamber in

2014. I see MLA Bill Bennett here tonight; I believe it was Bill who talked me into being part of the Chamber’s tourism committee when he was President, so you can all blame this on Bill.

I am a firm believer that this City and this part of the Kootenay region is on the cusp of something very exciting … but we’re going to have to work very hard, together, to make that happen.

While acknowledging the Ktunaxa peoples, who were here for thousands of years before Europeans arrived, we know that Cranbrook is here as a city because our very first entrepreneur Colonel James Baker – persuaded the CPR to build its Crowsnest Pass line through here more than 100 years ago.

Without that first determined and visionary entrepreneur, we could just as easily be the Fort Steele and District Chamber of Commerce, meeting tonight in a very different location.

And of course, 125 Rocky Mountain Avenue, Fort Steele … does not have the same ring to it.

two weeks ago for its annual two-day strategy session, and – using the results from the survey that many of you completed for us - we agreed to focus on three key areas for the coming year: Creating value and relevance for our members; Advocating to governments for the interests of business; Growing the local economy … building a clearer plan for our economic future around which we can all rally, and through that, building a strong sense of optimism about that future.

With that direction firmly in place, my goals as President this year will be two-fold: (1.) ensuring that the Chamber becomes more relevant to more businesses; and (2.) working collaboratively with the City (through Mayor Stetski, Council and staff), the RDEK, the Province, the College, the DBA, the Columbia Basin Trust and other key agencies and organizations to continue to improve the climate for business and grow our local economy.

Because there will be a municipal election in November, it will be an interesting year for the Chamber, as it always is at this time in the political cycle.

I can confirm for you that none of the Directors on the Chamber Board will run for office this year … that’s critical to keep things clean.

People will try to pull the Chamber in a number of directions, and it will be our challenge – as a Board and staff - to remain completely apolitical … to keep our eye firmly on the ball … providing value to our members, and growing our local economy.

I want to take a moment to thank you

– our members – for being part of this great organization. As the year unfolds, I encourage you to attend our luncheons … and get involved in networking opportunities, in special events and on Task Forces when we engage on specific business policy issues.

Along the way, we’ll ask you how we are doing, and I want you to tell us.

To wrap-up, I look forward to working with our new Board, with our Chamber staff, and with all of you, in tackling our challenges and our opportunities in 2014.

It was devastating, but lots of good things happened afterwards.

We have a beautiful office with a million dollar view and a training room that sees plenty of use.

Another wild thing happened in 1986.

Cranbrook was the smallest community to host the BC Summer Games.

The Chamber made the application to host the games and my job was to gather letters of support. From the MlA at the time, Terry Segarty to the Mayor, Rick Jensen and Chair Ron Tarr, we went to everyone for support.

The groups, organizations, arts and culture, all supported the bid and we got it. It was great.

Q: What has made you most proud of the Chamber over the years?

A: It has to be the membership here and the growth of the chamber. Our first general luncheon had five of us, and one of them was the guest speaker.

Laura Kennedy, who was there then and still here, has got to see the membership grow as well and it makes us very proud.

We’ve always had an excellent staff and president and board members—that included Bill Bennett as a president at one time.

Another thing that I am happy about was when Phillip Elchitz, with the airport at the time, asked if we would mentor the JCI (Junior Chamber International). We are lucky now to have had quite a few come through the ranks of the Chamber. They did it on their own, but I have to say it has been a pleasure to have the younger leadership on the board.

Rockstar farmer tour is coming to Cranbrook and Kimberley Submitted

Regional District of East Kootenay BYLAW 2501 & 2502 Wasa & Area Ofcial Community Plan / Electoral Area E Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaws The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering adoption of an Official Community Plan for Wasa and area. The Board will also be considering adoption of an Electoral Area E Zoning and Floodplain Management Bylaw which will consolidate the existing Wasa – Ta Ta Creek – Skookumchuck – Sheep Creek Land Use Bylaw with the existing Kimberley Rural Zoning Bylaw. The Official Community Plan is a long-term strategic planning document that will establish policies for land use in the plan area. The Zoning Bylaw is a regulatory document that assists in limiting incompatible neighbouring land uses and provides certainty to land development opportunities.

Minor amendments have been made to the Bylaws since presentation to the public in December 2013. Information on the changes is available on the RDEK website.

He’ll also give an overview of his lowtech, high yield production methods, many of which can be used by gardeners everywhere, including soils and fertility, crop rotations, seeding, starting & transplanting, row covers and low tunnels, season extension techniques, weed control and more.

“With the Public Produce Garden a success in Cranbrook and the huge growth of the Farmer’s Market,” said Shannon Duncan, “we

know there is a huge appetite out there for local food and local farming. Jean-Martin’s workshops will be a perfect kickoff to another productive year for food in the area - a year in which Wildsight will launch a public produce garden and a farmer’s market in Kimberley.”

John and Corrine Przeczek’s travels in Africa will be the topic of the next GoGo Grannies travelogue taking place at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre this week.

GoGo Grannies present their February Travelogue on Wednesday February 19th, at 7 p.m. in the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre.

In 2009 John and Corrine Przeczek spent almost six weeks in Africa. The first 10 days were in Tanzania on safari with some friends from Cranbrook. The final 4 weeks were on their own in South Africa where they rented a car and travelled from Johannesburg to Cape Town. They had a num-

ber of stops and adventures along the way.

Testing for "Troubled" Kids Last week I wrote about how wheat can make sensitive children depressed, over active, unable to concentrate, moody and angry, leading to diagnoses of depression, anxiety, ADHD and the needless use of drugs to treat the symptoms. Reactions to wheat occur on a spectrum from mild to severe.

On one extreme is celiac disease where the immune system is triggered by sticky proteins called gluten. Over time this reaction in the small intestine causes inflammatory damage that prevents the body from being able to absorb nutrients leading to weight loss and fatigue. Celiac disease is diagnosed by doing a biopsy of the tissue in the bowel however there are also blood and saliva tests that can help with the diagnosis. On the other end of the wheat reaction spectrum is a mild intolerance where wheat causes a wide variety of symptoms including those listed for so-called “troubled” kids and mild digestive issues. The vast majority of people who react to wheat do not have

celiac disease. Rather, they have a wheat intolerance that does not involve the immune system.

This presents a problem in terms of diagnosis, as there are very few ways to identify this type of reaction. The common tests used to diagnose an allergy to wheat will be negative for people with wheat intolerance. There simply are no common tests available that are sensitive enough to identify food reactions that do not involve the immune system. Applied kinesiology and electro dermal testing are two methods that are commonly used in naturopathic medicine to identify these illusive food reactions. If you suspect that you are reacting to wheat and all the conventional tests are normal, consider having yourself tested using applied kinesiology or electro dermal testing.

These tests will identify whether or not you are reacting to a food, regardless of whether the reaction is a mild intolerance or a severe immune-based reaction.

rate at which we are finding animals – many of which are new – is astonishing, and there is a high possibility that we’ll eventually find more species here than at the original Yoho National Park site, and potentially more than from anywhere else in the world. We are very excited to go back to the field this summer, during the ROM’s Centennial year, with one of our main goals being to increase the number of new species discovered,” said Dr. Jean-Bernard Caron, Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Royal Ontario Museum, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and the study’s lead author.

The find was made in the summer of 2012 by a team from the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM, Jean-Bernard Caron), Pomona College (Robert Gaines), the University of Toronto (JeanBernard Caron, Cédric Aria), the University of Saskatchewan (Gabriela Mángano) and Uppsala University (Michael Streng).

“We were already aware of the presence of some Burgess Shale fossils in Kootenay National Park. We had a hunch that if we followed the formation along the mountain topography into new areas with the right rock types, maybe, just maybe, we would get lucky – though we never in our wildest dreams thought we’d

track down a motherload like this. It didn’t take us very long at all to realize that we had dug up something special. To me, the Burgess Shale is a grand tale in every way imaginable, and we are incredibly proud to be part of this new chapter and to keep the story alive and thriving in everyone’s imagination,” said Dr. Robert Gaines Geologist, Pomona College.

A paper published today in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications describes Kootenay National Park’s new ‘Marble Canyon’ fossil beds for the first time. The authors suggest that the area and its extraordinary fossils will greatly further our understanding of the sudden explosion of animal life during the Cambrian Period.

The new fossil site is protected by Parks Canada, with the exact location remaining confidential to protect its integrity, though future visitor opportunities have not been ruled out. The ROM is especially proud of this discovery as it comes in a year the organization celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Quick Facts: This new finding is the latest in a recent string of Burgess Shale discoveries, including confirmation that Pikaia, found only in Yoho National Park, is the most primitive known vertebrate and therefore the ancestor of all descendant vertebrates, including humans.

In over 100 years of research, approximately 200 animal species have been identified at the original Burgess Shale discovery in Yoho National Park in over 600 field days. In just 15 days of field collecting, 50 animal species have already been unearthed at the new Kootenay National Park site.

Some species found at the new Kootenay site are also found in China’s famous Chengjiang fossil beds, which are 10 million years older. This contributes to the pool of evidence suggesting that the local and worldwide distribution of Cambrian animals, as well as their longevity, might have been underestimated.

Cougar hunt is now closed in region

Cougar hunting is now closed in the area to reduce overharvesting.

Submitted The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is closing the cougar hunting season in the East Kootenay, effective midnight on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014.

The closure covers the Columbia River valley from Mica Creek in the north,east to the Alberta border and south to the U.S. border. The following Wildlife Management Units are affected: 4-01 to 4-04, 4-21 to 4-26, 4-34 to 4-37 and 4-40.

The closure is guided by the regional cougar management program to reduce the potential for overhar-

vesting of the cougar population in the area.

The closure is a routine action detailed on page 50 of the 2012-14 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis and is undertaken to ensure harvest levels remain sustainable.

Crestbrook Gardens anniversary celebrated Submitted Seniors and people with disabilities in Creston celebrated the one-year anniversary of Crestbrook Gardens, a 24-unit affordable housing development funded by the governments of Canada and British Columbia along with community partners.

governments contributed a combined total of approximately $3.6 million for the construction of 24 Seniors’ Rental Housing apartments in Creston. The Town of Creston provided the land, valued at $48,500 and waived municipal equity valued at $89,000.

Columbia Basin Trust has committed $425,000 to the overall capital costs of eight sites in the Columbia Basin region for a total of 116 units under the Seniors’ Rental Housing initiative.

This includes projects that have been built in Cranbrook, Kimberley, Creston, Baynes Lake, Golden, Revelstoke and Valemount.

The Seniors’ Rental Housing initiative was a result of a $365-million joint investment under an amendment to the Canada-British Columbia Affordable Housing Agreement, which included funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan and by the government of British Columbia.

This initiative, first announced by the two levels of government

on April 8, 2009, provided $123.6 million, including $104 million for seniors and $19.6 million for persons with disabilities, to develop approximately 1,300 new affordable rental housing units, which has helped to stimulate local economies in smaller communities across B.C. Under terms of the agreement, the provincial and federal governments provided matching contributions of $61.8 million.

The Canada - British Columbia Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2011 - 2014, signed in July 2011, confirms the remaining three years of B.C.’s five-year allocation of the Government of Canada’s 2008 commitment of more than $1.9 billion to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless.

This means a further $90 million in federal funding for British Columbians in housing need. With matching provincial contributions of $90 million, a total combined investment of $180 million helps to support affordable housing programs for B.C. residents.

Annually, the

Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), will invest approximately $2 billion in housing. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of close to 600,000 households living in existing social housing.

In British Columbia, this represents an estimated 68,050 households. The remaining funding supports housing-related activities and affordable housing programs, including the Investment in Affordable Housing.

These investments are improving the quality of life for low-income Canadians and households living in existing social housing, including individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, seniors, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and Aboriginal people.

Looks Last year, Nissan introduced the bigger mid-sized Pathfinder SUV and this smaller Rogue shares many styling cues from its bigger brother. This, in my opinion, is a good idea. It has a sense of purpose, sophistication and commonality that helps define Nissan’s brand. Nissan wants to portray “everyday premium” with this new Rogue, including such nice touches as LED daytime running lights, wheel arch extensions, integrated mirror turn

Drive As hard as it might be to believe, this new, larger and slightly heavier (49kg) Rogue is actually more fuel-efficient than the last model. They were able to improve the economy by 18 per cent through the introduction of a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), aerodynamic tricks, and letting the carried-over engine breathe a bit better.

Still rated at 170hp, the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine does a good job in city driving, thanks to the gearing of the new CVT but can seam a bit underpowered for higher, passing manouevre on the highway. Overall, the person filling the new Rogue up with fuel will welcome this balance of efficiency and everyday drivability.

As part of the winter driving experience, I drove on an ice course in Macaglisse, Que., to highlight the vehicle’s stability system and the Active Trace Control feature. On the first run, through the twisty, sheer ice roads the entire system was shut off. As I crested a hill, then made a hard right turn, the Rogue slid all

the way out to the edges of the corner, almost hitting the opposing snow bank.

On the second run, with the advanced systems on, the same road was almost uneventful. The stability and traction control kept the wheels from spinning but the Trace Control System provides just a slight amount of brake force to the inside wheels to help the Rogue navigate the sheet ice with confidence.

Verdict The objective with this new Rogue was to be noticed and provide a level of refinement and creature comforts that the competition isn’t providing.

The pricing is fantastic, especially the middle SV models. The larger interior dimensions will always be welcome, as buyers like to get more for their money, but it is still small and efficient enough for city buyers.

Nissan Juke 2011 to 2013

If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary, then check out a Nissan Juke.

It was described by Nissan as a sport cross-utility vehicle, when introduced for the 2011 model year. The Juke is not big or pricey; it has (let’s say) distinctive styling lines and it packs a hot little engine under hood that also provides excellent fuel economy.

It is short in length yet tall in stature and has a wide stance with short front/rear body overhangs. The round headlights were rally car-inspired and are topped by distinctive “crocodile eye” light combinations. From a side view, the Juke has a two-door coupe look with “hidden” rear door handles.

Even a base SV trim level of Juke comes surprisingly well equipped with alloy wheels, keyless entry, air conditioning, 4-wheel disc brakes, stability control, steering wheel audio controls, heated side mirrors, a security system, Bluetooth and audio connectivity.

The sweetest part of the package is the turbocharged (with intercooler) 1.6-litre direct injection, 16-valve engine.

Power peeks at an impressively high 188 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. While its fuel economy ratings are

a super-frugal 7.3/6.1 L/100 km (city/highway), this engine does prefer pricier premium fuel.

An optional all-wheel-drive (AWD) system comes with a torque-vectoring feature on the rear axle. Under normal driving conditions, it directs all drive power to the front wheels for best fuel economy.

It can (automatically) vary drive up to an equal split between the front and rear axles.

An I-Con display with a drive mode selector, which offers different throttle/transmission/ steering response settings, comes with the higher SL trim level. This trim also includes fog lights, a power moonroof, push-button start and climate control air conditioning. A 6-speed manual transmission was standard with the frontdrive models and the automatic is a CVT type.

Despite Juke’s compact exterior dimensions, there’s seating space (with a bit of a squeeze) for five adults on the inside. The rear seat is a handy fold-down 60/40-split bench that folds flat to provide an extended cargo floor. Juke’s centre console is a motorcycle-inspired design that has a high-gloss (colour-matched) painted finish. The design and slope of the roof at the back, however, does limit rear vision from a driver perspective.

Juke carried-over into the 2012 model year virtually unchanged and had only minor alterations for 2013. The Navigation package includes a rear view monitor and a stereo upgrade (that was standard on Juke SL).

The NHTSA overall crash test safety rating (front/side/ rollover) for Juke was 4 out of 5 stars, with a 3 out of 5 stars in its frontal impact test.

It received a coveted “recommended” buy rating from Consumer Reports and an overall “average” rating for reliability.

Infiniti is celebrating a remarkable double 2014 AJAC New Technology Award win, as both of these ground breaking new technologies are available on its exceptional new Q50 sports sedan.

Direct Adaptive Steering, which is the first production auto use of a steer-by-wire system, won the Best New Innovation Technology Award. And a Predictive Forward Collision Warning Technology won the Best New Safety Technology Award.

This is the first year that AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) has presented a second “Best New Technology” award. It was done to resolve a recurring decision dilemma that we (I’m one of the 12) face on the judging panel: No matter how a smart or innovative a new technology entry may be, how do you choose it over an entry that could potentially save lives or reduce the severity of injuries in a collision.

In addition, dual awards also helps spread the love around as we get some terrific entries that deserve more exposure.

This year was no exception and we had some brilliant entries from Honda, Ford, General Motors Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. The quality of the powertrain, braking, steering and active safety systems entries made the decision process very difficult.

Driving enthusiasts, almost universally, have a negative knee-jerk reaction to severing that mechanical link between the steering wheel and road wheels. Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS) is a bold move by Infiniti and it had the guile, and the racing connections, to involve the best driver in the world (four-time F1 Champion) Sebastian Vettel in the development of Q50.

On the plus side, DAS elimi-

nates the mechanical losses that can dull and delay steering response to driver inputs in a mechanical/hydraulic steering system. Harsh unwanted vibrations at the steering wheel are eliminated and the driver can choose, using a fourmode selector, the amount of steering effort and response that he or she prefers. DAS can also interact with other handling systems such as Infiniti’s Active Lane Control system, which makes the Q50 feel like it is “magnetized” within a traffic lane.

An electronic actuator moves the steering rack, in response to steering wheel inputs by the driver, and turns the front wheels, during normal operational. It provides a faster and more precise steering response. DAS also has a triple-mode (three control units) clutch feature that instantly defaults it to a fail-safe mechanical steering linkage, if electrical power is cut.

The Best New Safety Technology award went to Infiniti’s Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW) technology.

This system can warn a driver of a potential collision risk that actually lies beyond a driver’s normal field of view. PFCW not only monitors movement of a vehicle that’s directly ahead in the same traffic lane, it can also (mystically) monitor a vehicle (two cars ahead) in front of the vehicle directly ahead.

PFCW can be particularly useful when following a large vehicle that obstructs forward vision like a delivery truck or a bus. Distance Control Assist sensors warn the driver to begin braking when it detects either one of the vehicles ahead are decelerating or braking at a rate beyond a certain threshold. The warnings consist of a visual alert in the Q50’s instrument cluster, an audible warning, and what’s call a “haptic” feedback warning, by tightening the seatbelt. If the driver ignores all of those warnings a collision intervention system kicks-in and applies the brakes.

The maximum range of the PFCW system is about 250 meters, but there are a lot of variables that might reduce its effectiveness. An important one is the amount of ground clearance offered by the vehicle directly ahead, as the low-mounted PFCW radar unit has to be able to see under it.

Frankly, in the automotive world, a hell of a lot. It’s difficult to imagine a Corvette called anything else.

Yet, it’s not on my list of cool names because prior to its application to America’s sports car, a corvette was a not-quite-a-destroyer type of small anti-submarine boat.

The name only became cool after the Corvette became a success (which didn’t exactly happen overnight). These six car names are just cool.

1. Mercury Marauder: The name conjures up bands of roving barbarians. In addition to providing basic transporta-

tion, who wouldn’t want a car that’s also proficient at looting and pillaging?

2. Ferrari 500 Superfast:

Even in the early 1960s, using this name took cojones —something that Enzo Ferrari never lacked. It’s almost overthe-top comical, not unlike Wile E. Coyote’s business card, which listed his occupation as “Super Genius.” One can only imagine the response of today’s product liability lawyers to this one.

3. Ford Mustang: While the association with the car doesn’t hurt, the name Mustang was cool long before the car debuted in April 1964.

Whether it’s the war-winning

fighter plane the P-51 Mustang or the wild horse (the car was actually named for the former), it’s just plain cool.

4. Shelby Cobra: As venomous snakes go, Cobras are wicked cool. The whole hood thing, their exotic origins and their highly concentrated venom make your ordinary rattlers and water moccasins seem, well, ordinary. It makes for one of the all-time great hood badges, too.

5. Plymouth Barracuda:

Adventures in leaving Detroit and trusting your GPS

While a GPS system may not be the best way to get from A to B, this road trip proved that the Jeep Cherokee is a great vehicle for a long road trip.

The digital road sign above warned: “Changing Roads Ahead. Do not rely solely on GPS.” I felt like it was speaking directly to me as I had suffered anxiety ever since Driveway editor Keith Morgan climbed into the Jeep Cherokee and we left downtown Detroit, heading north to Toronto.

North, ahem, yes. The tunnel to Canada was a stone’s throw away from our launch point.

I was thinking it would route me the same way I got down to Motown, via Windsor and through the tunnel.

Why the GPS didn’t? – I’m not sure. Clearly it knew something we didn’t.

Needless to say, the mechanical woman’s voice echoing through the premium speakers certainly did give us a scenic tour of the area. And by scenic I mean, she guided us through some rather dodgy areas, characterized by poorly maintained roads, broken down buildings

and dejected looking people.

After the excitement of the 2014 North American International Auto Show, I was looking forward to the long and painfully boring drive back. (That’s before Keith hitched a ride, honest.) My wish was not yet coming true.

Finally, we were on some sort of highway. But no signs to a border popped up for miles and miles. We even pulled over a couple of times in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited to check our smartphones to see if we were heading in the right direction.

We were, but I guess I was just looking for a sign. A sign that said “Canada” on it.

But no, we got this instead: “State Prison Nearby. Do NOT Pick Up Hitchhikers.”

Gulp.

Keith and I looked over at each other and laughed nervously.

Oh gosh, what have we gotten ourselves into? – Regardless, we were in it together so it was bound to be eventful.

I forgot to mention, my fuel was getting low, too, and I had a flight to catch out of Pearson. No need to panic, I think.

When you’re in these kinds of situations, you say things that you normally wouldn’t say.

“I will be so happy when we are back in Ontario,” is a phrase not often uttered by a B.C. resident. But it fell from my lips.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, right?

The one thing that remained steadfast and calm throughout the craziness was the Jeep Cherokee.

The leather-trimmed seats were plush and comfortable to sit in for hours on end.

parture warning would gently lead me back into place.

And since it was frigid outside – Ontario and Michigan in January is anything but tropical – features like a remote starter, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and dual climate zone controls keep occupants toasty warm.

Not to mention there was a generous amount of power being delivered from its 3.2L, Pentastar V6 engine, which is rated at 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. It’s then linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

And with 4x4 capabilities, I was ready to brave the winter conditions, on bare roads or not.

Luckily, it was a beautiful day, with few clouds in the sky and clear roads.

Things were looking good.

Then it happened. A sign. A sign to Canada nonetheless.

Did I doubt the GPS’s ability to lead? I sure did. Then again, it’s not out of my character to question authority.

As we handed the CBSA our passports, all I could think about was finding a fuel station before we got stranded.

And yes, I was very happy to be in Ontario. But I’d be happier when I knew I was on a plane to Vancouver. Yet, I was thoroughly enjoying my time in the Cherokee, quirky styling and anxiety aside.

It had an ability to somewhat calm my woes due to its temperate nature. The quiet cabin allowed for wonderful conversations, whether it was with myself, with the GPS or with Keith.

OBITUARY Elizabeth Mishukoff 1915 - 2014 Elizabeth passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, at 98 years of age, on Thursday February 6, 2014 at the Kimberley Special Care Home "The Pines".

Elizabeth was born on November 4, 1915 in Novgorodskii, Eastern Siberia, Russia. She moved from Edmonton to Kimberley in 2002 to be nearer to her son. She resided at the Lions Manor until October 2013 when she moved to The Pines.

A special thank you to the staff and residents at the Lions Manor, the wonderful staff at The Pines, and to Judy and Marv Stanyer for their friendship over the years. Also, a big thank you to Dr. Haiduk for his great care of Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is survived by her two daughters Luba Pierlot of Vancouver, BC and Irene (Pat) Anderson of Celista, BC, her son Leonard (Sherrie) of Kimberley, BC, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and her brother Nick (Helen) of Beaverlodge, AB. She was predeceased by her husband Con, brother Alex, and sisters Agnes, Francis, Faye and Anne.

A funeral mass for Elizabeth will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Holy Protection Convent in Bluffton, Alberta. Elizabeth will be Interred in the Holy Protection Convent Cemetery.
