Snowmobiler dies in Boulder Mountain avalanche Alex Cooper

One man is dead after four people were involved in an avalanche on Boulder Mountain near Revelstoke on Saturday.

The avalanche occurred near the Boulder Mountain Cabin on Feb. 15 at around 3 p.m. Four snowmobilers were in the area when the avalanche was triggered, and two were caught

in the slide, RCMP reported.

One man was quickly uncovered from the snow by his colleagues but the second one was unconscious by the time he was dug out of the avalanche.

The victim has been identified as Chris McCoy, 36, of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. He is described as an experienced snowmobiler who had ridden in Revelstoke many times.

was mobilized and a team – including avalanche rescue dogs – was immediately flown to the scene, however the 35-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries.

He was evacuated from the mountain via helicopter.

The other man suffered non-lifethreatening injuries.

All snowmobilers had appropriate safety gear, including beacons, and avalanche safety training.

The rescue effort was based out of the Selkirk Mountain Helicopter hangar on Westside Road. Search and Rescue and RCMP were both there and funeral director Gary Sulz was seen arriving at the location.

Boulder Mountain is a very popular snowmobiling area just outside of Revelstoke and was very busy on Saturday. Many riders were seen coming down off the mountain late in the day.

No details have been released on the nature or cause of the avalanche.

At least one metre of snow has fallen in the area since Monday, Feb. 10, causing the Canadian Avalanche Centre to increase the danger rating to high in the alpine and at treeline, and considerable below treeline.

The incident is now being investigated by the BC Coroners Service.

erties owners, Big Bend Development Corporation, to re-zone the property from residential to commercial. The application includes a design for an expanded brewery with a brick, wood and glass facade and an outdoor patio across the parking lot from the railway museum.

“It’s a very nice facade, lots of wood, lots of stone,” development manager Dean Strachan told council. “It fits with the form and character of the community quite nicely.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, council gave the staff the go ahead to begin work on the bylaw that would allow the two applications.

Or at least, that appears to be the case after filing an application for a sub-division and re-zoning of a parcel of land on Farrell Road across from the Revelstoke Railway Museum.

As reported previously, Mt. Begbie Brewery is looking to expand and has been eyeing up the Farrell Road property as a possible location. First, it was looking for some sort of tax breaks from the city.

While the city creates a revitalization tax credit scheme, the brewery is moving forward with its expansion plans.

The property, which consists of six lots, used to be the site of a mobile home park. The application would see the six lots consolidated into one property in order to have the brewery built there.

The application is still in the early stages and needs to go through council and out to the public before being approved.

According to a staff report by development manager Dean Strachan, the new brewery would include a larger retail and tasting component that would complement, with a patio that would face the neighbouring railway museum.

Part of any bylaw would include a development agreement between the land owner and the city to create a right-of-way for Farrell Road and move a sewer line that currently runs through the property.

The primary purpose of Bylaw No. 850-1 is to incorporate Climate Change objectives and policies into the Electoral Area ‘B’ Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 850 as required by the Local Government Act and as a result of the CSRD Community Greenhouse Gas Emissions Strategy.

Bylaw No. 850-1 also proposes some additional text amendments and updates to provide clarification and consistency with other documents.

Map amendments are also proposed to replace the existing mapping with more accurate mapping which is in a format consistent with other CSRD Official Community Plans (OCPs).

Steve Krywa shovels out his vehicle Wednesday morning, following an overnight snowfall that dumped more than 40 centimetres on Revelstoke. After four weeks of dry weather, the snow returned with a vengeance last Monday, Feb. 10. By Wednesday morning, close to 70 centimetres of snow had fallen — most of which came overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. For powder hounds, it was a God-send. For public works, it meant mustering all available resources to clear the streets — transit service was shut down briefly as crews dealt with the heavy snow. Another 10 centimetres of snow fell by the end of the weekend.

MP’s fed budget hope: about $98 million for local highway upgrade Alex Cooper

The 2014 federal budget should provide small boosts to Revelstoke through investments in trades training, forestry and upgrades to the Trans-Canada Highway through Glacier National Park, says MP David Wilks.

The budget was presented in the House of Commons by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty on Tuesday. Flaherty himself called the budget “boring,” acknowledging it didn’t provide any additional tax cuts or significant spending.

The Conservative government is aiming to eliminate the deficit ahead of the 2015 election and this budget is designed to bring them closer to that goal.

In an interview, Wilks, the Conservative MP for Kootenay–Columbia, touted several specific budget items as being beneficial to Revelstoke residents.

Most significantly, he pointed to the $391 million the government has committed over the next five years to upgrade infrastructure in the country’s national parks. Wilks said he hopes that about a quarter of that will go directly to highway upgrades in Glacier National Park.

“That’s what I’m going to try and pitch for,” he said. “I think that’s a reasonable amount based on the project I’m trying to pitch here.”

He said he will be planning a meeting between the CEO of Parks Canada, the mayors of Revelstoke and Golden, and MLA Norm Macdonald to create a plan.

The money, while significant, is a far cry from the $1–$1.5 billion Wilks said he asked for to twin the stretch of highway in a presentation to senior cabinet officials prior to the budget being tabled.

“Realistically that’s a big chunk of money but I’m happy with this,” he said. “It doesn’t happen often where a project that you put forward to the Minister of Finance actually gets mentioned in the budget.

It’s a pretty significant commitment.”

Wilks pointed to several other budget items that should be of noted to Revelstoke. He noted the creation of the Canada Apprentice Loan program, which provides up to $4,000 to registered apprentices in Red Seal trades courses.

“The forestry industry is looking for a lot of trades people,” he said. “If they’re Red Seal, it can certainly help.”

Wilks also mentioned the $90.4 million over four years committed to continue the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation program, which helps the development of new technology in the industry.

He touted a new $3,000 tax credit for Search and Rescue volunteers who accumulate at least 200 hours of duty. It can be combined with hours accumulated as volunteer firefighters, which could help out some people who volunteer with both organizations.

Last week, Social Development Coordinator Jill Zacharias mounted a unique photography exhibit at the Community Centre. The display is part of The Revelstoke Healthy Community Project, undertaken by the City in partnership with Interior Health, and part of a province-wide Healthy Communities initiative.

The overarching goal of the initiative is to support the prevention of chronic disease and obesity, which currently represent the highest cost in health care, and to look at the various ways communities can make “the healthy choice, the easy choice.” The initiative recognizes that health starts long before illness – where we live, learn, work and play.

One thing that is not yet clear is how a freeze on departmental spending will affect Mount Revelstoke & Glacier National Parks.

On Thursday, Wilks issued a news release re-iterating his talking points, saying the government was focused on the economy. “We’re moving forward with a positive plan that will help create jobs and grow our economy, all while keeping taxes low and remaining on track for balanced budgets in 2015,” he stated.

Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko (NDP) said the budget falls short on taking significant action on the challenges facing Canadians today.

“There are 300,000 more unemployed today than before the recession, many seniors are struggling and families are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet,” he stated in a news release. “It appears that the Conservatives are delaying any new ideas until 2015, the election year.”

He did acknowledge some positive points, including the investment in broadband infrastructure, $390 million being spent on food safety programs and the creation of the apprenticeship loans program. However, he added, there was no support for rural infrastructure.

“There is no commitment to a small communities component which was a key ask of Canada’s municipal leaders,” he said. “Also, I am worried that the Building Canada Fund has no real criteria which could leave municipalities at risk of missing this year’s construction season.”

“We’ve all heard that Revelstokians are burned out on ‘public process.’ I needed to get public input on the project and thought I would try and come up with something new.” In January, Zacharias put out a call for photographers and 10 came forward with dozens of photos. In the end, 25 photos were chosen that fit the five ‘pillars’ of health. Those who comment get a chance to win one of the photos on display. The project builds on the work done last year for the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, looks at what we are already doing, and what we need to be doing better. Ultimately, it will help the community with future priorities. Zacharias notes that the project is fully funded by a BC Healthy Communities Capacity-Building Grant. The exhibit is on display until February 21.

Community pulls together for Kendra Wiberg

With such a tight knit community, many of you may have already heard the heartbreaking story of Kendra Wiberg (Brown). She is a woman with dynamic energy, lives a healthy lifestyle and has an incredible zest for life, but is sadly deteriorating quickly. She was raised in Revelstoke (4th generation Revelstokian) and graduated from RSS in 1994. Although she lives in Kamloops now with her husband Larry, and two beautiful daughters, (Madison aged 5 and Sierra aged 3) she has many friends and family still here in Revelstoke (Sister – Rhonda Schmidt and Grandmother – Maxine Brown).

Kendra was diagnosed with a rare ovarian cancer 13 years ago – she fought it and won. Now, she has been diagnosed with kidney cancer and also a very rare form of cancer that only 0.12 in a million will get. Although it is terminal, her fight has not ended. Kendra is just beginning chemotherapy in an effort to prolong her life as long as possible. Hopefully the treatments allow her to spend one more Christmas and see her daughters turn 4 and 6.

Once Kendra reached the point of acceptance her main goal became making the most of the time that she has with her family. Her friends launched a campaign to raise as much money as they could to send Kendra and her family to Disneyland – the land of Magic – to make beautiful memories for her girls! Kendra is putting together what she calls “Legacy Boxes.” They will be filled with letters, birthday cards for their birthdays to come, small presents and photos in a hopes they will remember her and that she can always be with her girls as they grow older.

This campaign that has been put in motion is driven by her dream trip but also to raise money to help elevate some of the

burden of the medical expenses and to also have a little put aside so her husband Larry will be able to be home with the girls for a bit when Kendra can no longer be with them.

It is a story that has touched many people because as a parent you couldn’t possibly imagine not being there to raise your children. This could be anyone of us. The support has been truly amazing. Kendra has at times been speechless with the overwhelming support that has been sent their way. She feels the love and positive energy. Kendra has said “that if anything good can come of this is that everyone know to hold their babies a little tighter and love their families that much deeper

and enjoy every day as a gift.”

In the world of community journalism, reporters often come and go. I know I thought I'd be in Revelstoke for a year, at most two, when I took the job here.

As you may have heard, I recently received a promotion of sorts to be editor of the Arrow Lakes News in Nakusp.

I've been down there for almost a month now but I held off on writing my farewell column because I still had some unfinished business up here, and some vacation coverage to manage.

This week will be my last real issue after almost 4.5 years with the Times Review.

I remember showing up here from Toronto in September 2009, first loving the beauty of the area and the warm weather.

I remember my first hike to the summit of Keystone Peak and realizing how out of shape I was.

I remember the weather turning cold and rainy for two months and wondering if I made a big mistake coming here and if I would cope here without readily available cheap Chinese food, falafels and live music.

Then the resort opened and I had my first powder day and I remembered why I applied for the job here. One season pass led to the next, I bought a mountain bike and slowly accumulated a shed full of toys and started a vegetable garden.

I've had opportunities to leave, but passed them up to stay. I managed to get a good

situation in Nakusp, where I'll be working there during the week but still getting my ski days in on the weekend. That said, missing out last Wednesday's epic powder day caused me to shed a little tear. Summit Lake ski area wasn't quite the same.

I'd like to think I did a good job here. I know sometimes my zest for the mountains would obscure my reporting. I wrote a lot of stories about avalanches, some of which I'm proud of. I remember the first one I wrote — about four snowmobilers who survived a avalanche on Frisby Ridge in November — and asking Buck Corrigan, the Search and Rescue manager if it was normal for avalanches to happen that early in winter. He laughed and asked if if I was new here.

Later that winter I woke up hungover on my 30th birthday and spent 17 hours covering the Boulder Mountain avalanche. I guess it's fitting that two of the last stories I've written for the paper are avalanche related — the semi that was hit by a slide on Friday and the death on Boulder Mountain on Saturday.

I was there when MP David Wilks spoke candidly to a group of constituents about being a Conservative backbencher and that he would vote against the budget — if 12 of his colleagues would join him.

His comments made national news and he was quickly brought back in line by the Prime Minister's Office.

There were also great times.

I got to explore the Nakimu Caves, fly onto the Ilecillewaet Glacier and to Ruedi Beglinger's Durrand Glacier Chalet. I went whitewater rafting and got to ski at RMR before opening day. All perks of the job.

I could go on. Instead, I'll just thank all the people that returned my calls, answered my questions, gave me story tips and helped me out along the way. There's too many to list but I will give special thanks to my editor Aaron Orlando, who constantly pushed me to get better and called me out when my efforts dwindled.

You’ll still see my byline in the paper once and a while and you'll still see me around town — at the hill or on the skin track or bike trails or at the Last Drop. I'm looking forward to talking to people without thinking, "Is this a story?"

Heritage Afloat is the theme for Heritage Week in British Columbia from February 17 to 24.

Long before the Canadian Pacific Railway came through the province, people were using the lakes and rivers as main transportation corridors. The Sinixt First Nation who lived along the Columbia River and its tributaries were known to the fur traders and the settlers as the Lakes people. The Sinixt developed the unique sturgeon-nosed canoe as an efficient way of accessing their territory.

The Columbia River system was a fur-trade route from 1811, when David Thompson completed his mapping of the river, until the 1850s.

The Big Bend gold rush north of current-day Revelstoke occurred in the 1860s, and saw the first steam boat that came into this region. Built in Washington State, the SS Forty-Nine made its first trip to the Big Bend in April of 1866, bringing up 73 passengers who hoped to make their fortunes in the gold fields. It made only three trips to Downie Creek. There are no photographs of the SS Forty-Nine, but the museum has a unique artifact that bears witness to the boat. A tree blaze was found on the west bank of the Columbia River just south of where the Revelstoke Dam is now. It was carved with this message: “SS 49 delayed in consequence of high water, July 4, ’66.”

Steamboat transportation resumed in this area in 1885 during railway construction, when the SS Kootenai traveled from Northport, Washington, bringing in laborers and supplies. From that time, steamboats were an important link in the transportation chain in this area. A consortium

of businessmen formed the Columbia and Kootenay Steam Navigation Company in 1889 and they developed a fleet of steamships that were sold to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company in 1897.

A locally owned boat, the SS Revelstoke, was built at Nakusp in 1902. It travelled as far north as five miles above Downie Creek, taking in supplies for the miners who lived in that region. It also served as an excursion boat, taking passengers to Hall’s Landing and St. Leon hot springs for picnics. The SS Revelstoke was tied up for the winter at Comaplix in April of 1915 when it was destroyed in an arson fire that burned down the sawmill and part of the townsite.

The SS Minto was probably the most wellknown boat on the Columbia River system. Built in 1898, it travelled on the Arrow Lakes from Arrowhead to Robson until 1954. Models of the boat are on display at both the Revelstoke Museum and Archives and the Revelstoke Railway Museum.

Heritage Week events will take place at both the Revelstoke Museum and Archives and the Revelstoke Railway Museum on Saturday, February 22. The Railway Museum is presenting Railway Reflections at 1 p.m., with Doug Mayer of the Revelstoke Model Railroad Club giving a presentation on CPR facilities in the Revelstoke Division. Revelstoke Museum and Archives will present a talk on Steamboats on the Columbia at 11 a.m. and a slideshow on heritage buildings at 1 p.m. Throughout the day, BC Hydro Power Smart will provide information and activities, and building owners can search the history of their heritage buildings.

The semi-truck was jacked a metre off the ground, thrown off the side of the road by an avalanche of snow. The front windshield was smashed in and parts of the truck were strewn about. The driver experience minor injuries and taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, John Kampman was eyeing the scene, figuring out just how he was going to get that tractor-trailer unit out of the snow, on to the road and then back to Revelstoke.

The owner of Columbia Towing, he was on site after the semi was struck by an avalanche in Rogers Pass in the early hours of Saturday, Feb. 15.

Kampman has been in the towing business since 1996, when he traded a bunch of vehicles and a gun he had collected for a towing company in Invermere. In 2000, he purchased Columbia Towing in Revelstoke, eventually acquiring businesses in Golden and Sicamous.

He now he runs a company with three locations servicing the most treacherous stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Kampman grew up on a farm in Southern Ontario, in an area near Toronto slowly getting devoured by urban sprawl. He drove tractors on the farm before he was 10-years-old.

As a teenager, he hung out a garage where he got his first taste of being around tow trucks.

However, it wasn't until years later — after spending time as a mechanic and a carpenter — that he finally entered the industry. It happened after one of his legs was crushed in a work accident. Unable to be on his feet much, he looked for work that would be easier on him. That's when he ended up driving tow trucks.

In his years on the road, Kampman has seen the worst. As we drove up to Rogers Pass he pointed out all the spots where he'd had to haul vehicles up the bank and back onto the

road. He showed me the rock where a woman was pinned after getting thrown from her tractor-trailer. She was sleeping while her partner drove and it wasn't until hours later when they pulled the truck away that anyone saw the body.

He talked about his week, which has been pretty much non-stop since the snow returned last Monday. His latest stretch of work began Friday just after midnight. From then, it was one call after another – crashes, pulling snowplows out of ditches and more – catching some shuteye when he could. He keeps going because he needs the work and you don't know when things might slow down. It’s an expensive business to be in — whe tow truck we were driving in cost about $300,000 and Columbia Towing has a fleet of 30 vehicles between its three locations.

By the time I'd joined up with Kampman at the Columbia Towing yard in the Revelstoke industrial park on Saturday at 8 a.m. he'd had five hours sleep in the past 32 hours. Combined with all the trauma he’s witnessed, it's no wonder he told me he's considering finding a new line of work.

We drove up to Rogers Pass on an empty road, shut down due to the avalanche. Traffic controllers let us through quickly — they all recognized Kampman at the wheel of his heavy wrecker tow truck, a familiar site on these roads. On the hood scrawled the slogans “23 1/2 hour service” and “We’ll pick you up.”

We stopped a little before the slide path and switched on our avalanche beacons.

We drove the rest of the way, stopping between the Loop Brook and Asulkan parking lots, where a small slide path coming from Abbott Ridge reached the road. It was a small path compared to many of the others that run onto the highway, but it still packed enough punch to take out the tractor trailer that Kampman was scoping out.

The semi-truck was jacked a metre off the ground, thrown off the side of the road by an avalanche of snow. The front windshield was smashed in and parts of the truck were strewn about. The driver experience minor injuries and taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, John Kampman was eyeing the scene, figuring out just how he was going to get that tractor-trailer unit out of the snow, on to the road and then back to Revelstoke.

The owner of Columbia Towing, he was on site after the semi was struck by an avalanche in Rogers Pass in the early hours of Saturday, Feb. 15.

Kampman has been in the towing business since 1996, when he traded a bunch of vehicles and a gun he had collected for a towing company in Invermere. In 2000, he purchased Columbia Towing in Revelstoke, eventually acquiring businesses in Golden and Sicamous.

He now he runs a company with three locations servicing the most treacherous stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Kampman grew up on a farm in Southern Ontario, in an area near Toronto slowly getting devoured by urban sprawl. He drove tractors on the farm before he was 10-years-old.

As a teenager, he hung out a garage where he got his first taste of being around tow trucks.

However, it wasn't until years later — after spending time as a mechanic and a carpenter — that he finally entered the industry. It happened after one of his legs was crushed in a work accident. Unable to be on his feet much, he looked for work that would be easier on him. That's when he ended up driving tow trucks.

In his years on the road, Kampman has seen the worst. As we drove up to Rogers Pass he pointed out all the spots where he'd had to haul vehicles up the bank and back onto the

road. He showed me the rock where a woman was pinned after getting thrown from her tractor-trailer. She was sleeping while her partner drove and it wasn't until hours later when they pulled the truck away that anyone saw the body.

He talked about his week, which has been pretty much non-stop since the snow returned last Monday. His latest stretch of work began Friday just after midnight. From then, it was one call after another – crashes, pulling snowplows out of ditches and more – catching some shuteye when he could. He keeps going because he needs the work and you don't know when things might slow down. It’s an expensive business to be in — whe tow truck we were driving in cost about $300,000 and Columbia Towing has a fleet of 30 vehicles between its three locations.

By the time I'd joined up with Kampman at the Columbia Towing yard in the Revelstoke industrial park on Saturday at 8 a.m. he'd had five hours sleep in the past 32 hours. Combined with all the trauma he’s witnessed, it's no wonder he told me he's considering finding a new line of work.

We drove up to Rogers Pass on an empty road, shut down due to the avalanche. Traffic controllers let us through quickly — they all recognized Kampman at the wheel of his heavy wrecker tow truck, a familiar site on these roads. On the hood scrawled the slogans “23 1/2 hour service” and “We’ll pick you up.”

We stopped a little before the slide path and switched on our avalanche beacons.

We drove the rest of the way, stopping between the Loop Brook and Asulkan parking lots, where a small slide path coming from Abbott Ridge reached the road. It was a small path compared to many of the others that run onto the highway, but it still packed enough punch to take out the tractor trailer that Kampman was scoping out.

The Revelstoke Ski Club’s Emily Unterberger (pictured) and Mitch Smith raced hard against a strong field in the U18 National Championships in Collingwood, Ontario this past week. Both athletes posted two top-15 finishes over the four days of competition. Emily was strongest in GS, coming in 9th in one race and 11th in the other. Mitch divides his strengths between the two disciplines, coming in 9th in one slalom race and 12th in one GS. Congratulations to both Emily and Mitch for their strong showing, and thanks to Coach Gregor Druzina for his support and guidance.

The Revelstoke Grizzlies dismal season will mercifully come to an end this weekend.

Last weekend, the Grizzlies were swept in a home and home series versus the league-leading Kamloops Storm. On Friday, Revelstoke was beat 7-3 at home, getting outshot 59-29 in the process. Matt Lucero scored twice and John Jamieson had the goals for Revelstoke in the loss.

On Saturday, the teams shifted to Kamloops, where the Storm ran away with a 4-1 win. Brendan Jay scored for Revelstoke and Jaxon Nohr made 50 saves in the losing effort.

The Grizzlies go into the final weekend having lost nine games in a row and 27 of their last 28 games.

The Revelstoke Acrobats had 13 members attend the first big competition of the year held in Burnaby over the Family Day long weekend! There was a total of nine medals won by the Acrobats contingent, including four gold, two silver and three bronze.

With over 200 athletes from all over the province attending, our athletes did extremely well. With this highly competitive meet to even make a final was a big deal.

There were 16 top-10 finishes and a lot of personal bests achieved.

The gold medal winners were Summer Novakowski, Julia Dorrius, Jenna Bollefer, Josh Winger. Ainslee Arthurs has qualified with a funded score to attend the National Championships in Ottawa in May! She has three more meets to try and make another score! If she can make the score twice she will be the first athlete out of Revelstoke in over 10 years to compete at Nationals!

All individuals or companies registered this past year through the District Office in Revelstoke will be receiving invitations to re-register their equipment for the coming fiscal year by mail by the end of February.

Any individuals or companies who were not registered in 2013, but wish to have their equipment listed, are hereby invited to contact the District Office, either in person or by phone, to obtain the appropriate registration forms.

Note that while you do not need to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance or up-to-date WorkSafeBC coverage to register, you will have to meet these requirements prior to working on any ministry projects.

Only owned or lease-to-own equipment is eligible for registration. Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year. Seniority is not transferable from area to area.

The deadline for new registrations is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014.

Late registrations will be accepted, but may appear at the bottom of the open list.

With a bronze medal finish at the International Ski Mountaineering Federation World Cup sprint race in Italy on February 7, Revelstoke resident Melanie Bernier became the first Canadian to reach the World Cup podium in the sport. “Standing up there felt like a reflection of all the work I put into preparing,” Bernier said with a grin. “It felt great, but also like I really deserved it.”

Bernier hopes her result will help put ski mountaineering racing on Canada’s radar. “I’m stoked about getting more people involved,” enthuses Bernier. “I want to be able to share the sport.” While ski mountaineering racing is picking up steam in the United States, Canada has been slower to take to it. Bernier hopes her result could be the start of a shift, proof that a Canadian can go to Europe and earn a great result. “We’ll gain respect from peo-

“Before, Canadians would show up and be considered the underdog, but now people know we’re there to compete.”

Ski mountaineering racing (also called randonnée racing) combines skiing and mountaineering skills, using ski touring equipment to race up alpine terrain past check points in a course. Athletes use special skins to ascend slopes on their skis, scramble over rocky sections with skis on their packs, and descend on skis. The winner is first to cross the finish line.

Bernier has been a member of the Canadian National Ski Mountaineering team since 2008. She has finished in the top five at prestigious races around the world, and felt like the podium result was a long time coming. Bernier spent a month in Europe this winter and competed in ten races, including three World Cup races.

Currently ranked sixth in the world, Bernier hopes to make it to the final ISMF World Cup race of the season in Norway so she only misses one World Cup race of the season. “I may need to find a pot of gold, rob a bank or sell my car,” she jokes.

Hailing from outside Quebec City, Bernier got on Nordic skis at four, downhill skis at seven, and raced moguls as a teen. She first ski toured in 2006 while living in Whistler, and then entered her first ski mountaineering race only a few weeks later. After racing in her first world championship in 2008 in Switzerland, she returned to Canada inspired by the level of competition and fitness. Though she has had a fitness coach, Bernier’s success has come without the help of a ski coach. Bernier loves the challenge of competing against high-level athletes on the World Cup circuit. “You don’t learn if you’re the queen in your backyard, you learn when you’re last somewhere else,” she laughs.

Bernier believes that passion is a big part of success. “Everyone is a champion at something,” she says with a smile, “and if you’re lucky enough to know what your calling is, that is a gift.” Bernier is certainly happy to be competing in the sport she loves, and happier still to be winning medals for it.

Obituaries Barry Glasgow Barry William Glasgow of Revelstoke, BC, born February 4th, 1952 in Olds AB, passed away on January 15th, 2014 at the age of 61, after losing his battle with cancer.

Barry is survived by his younger brother Larry Glassgow of Calgary AB, his sister Linda Wirachowsky (Brian) of Vancouver B.C. and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Lauretta Glassgow.

Barry had a great passion for country and western music, and loved to share it with family and friends.

Camping, carpentry and fine woodwork were also high on his list of enjoyments. His laughter and smile will be truly missed .

There will be grave side service held in Kelowna B.C. at a later date .

Cremation arrangements are in care of Brandon Bowers Funeral Home, Revelstoke .

Margaret Collia It is with our deepest regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and loving wife Margaret Helen Collia (nee Fuoco). She passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Burnaby, BC on Thursday, February 6th, 2014 at the age of 97.

She was born in Fernie, BC on January 18, 1917.

She married in Revelstoke, BC on May 10, 1947, where she lived on Edward Street for the remainder of her life.

Margaret loved spending time with her family and was happiest when surrounded by them. Anyone who ever set foot in grandma Maggie's kitchen knows that you would be offered everything but the kitchen sink before you left, it was just a small example of her generous nature. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting, gardening, baking, and was passionate about watching tennis, figure skating, and going to bingo.

Her presence will be greatly missed by her family for countless reasons. Among them are her Christmas baking, her Tuesday lunches for the boys, her annual trips to Reno with her daughter and granddaughter, and her unwavering support of all her great grandchildren's accomplishments.

Predeceased by her husband Joseph Francis Collia, she is survived by her daughter Roseann (Mike), grandson Roger (Andrea) Echlin, great grandsons Joseph and John Echlin as well as granddaughter Sherri (Doug) Gosselin and great granddaughter's Brooke and Grace Gosselin.

Joseph and Maggie often said that their greatest possessions were their memories. We are all so blessed to have shared in those memories, to have spent so many years with them, listening to their countless stories of times past and absorbing all their infinite wisdom.

Margaret's wishes were to have a quiet family gathering in Revelstoke later this Spring at her home of 67 years.

Our loss is heaven's gain. Their newest angel is truly special. She was an amazing example of a life well lived and we will forever miss her.

during the altercation. The victim also claims one of the suspects pointed a gun at his head, but police have not been able to confirm this or the stabbing.

All three suspects then fled the area before police arrived.

Three children and an adult female were also inside the residence at the time of the incident and witnessed the altercation. “It is extremely fortunate that no one else was injured or killed in this violent home invasion,� said Dubnyk. “The family is cooperating with police and investigators are attempting to identify the three male suspects who were not know to the family.�

The victim was transported by helicopter to hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening injury. Sicamous Sgt. Dave Dubnyk says he’s expected to make a

full recovery.

Smith says officers from the Kamloops RCMP’s Major Crime Unit, along with members of the Regional General Investigation Unit, continue to investigate and are trying to determine the motive “for this violent act.�

Dubnyk says investigators are considering the possibility that the invasion was a case of mistaken identity, noting there are several medical marijuana grows in the area. He said nothing has been found on the property indicating illegal activity.

A Malakwa resident was taken to hospital after being shot in the shoulder during a home invasion that occurred Wednesday evening.

Leslie Smith says police continue to investigate what they’re calling a targeted home invasion at a Malakwa residence on Feb. 12.

Smith says the incident was reported to police at approximately 5 p.m. Officers were told three men had entered the residence armed with weapons and a struggle ensued between the suspects and the male home owner.

Lt. Governor Judith Guichon read the speech in the ceremonial beginning of the B.C. legislature session. It touched on the B.C. Liberal government’s familiar themes, including the need to train and retain citizens to fill one million jobs due to growth and baby boomer retirements in the next decade. “British Columbians can look forward to enhancements to the Industry Training Authority, as well as the re-engineering of our secondary and post-secondary institutions to ensure our students have the skills for the jobs of

reductions of skills training and the shortage of spaces and equipment for industrial training.

The speech also promises a new 10-year plan for transportation, to build on major road, bridge and transit works that have become contentious in the Lower Mainland as it struggles to keep up with population growth.

In education, the government renewed Clark’s goal of a personalized education plan for each student and “an agreement to ensure a decade of labour peace in our classrooms.� That goal comes as the government pursues an appeal of the latest court judgment in favour of the B.C. Teach-

teacher strike to build public support for an imposed settlement.

NDP leader Adrian Dix called the speech “particularly lacking in vision or substance,� adding that it contains nothing for B.C. residents who “don’t work in the industries of liquefied natural gas or liquor.�

In addition to touting the future benefits of LNG exports and pending liquor law reforms, the speech recounts increases in Asian trade, the ongoing “core review� to reduce provincial spending, and new union agreements that tie wage increases to an expanded economy.
