Snowbrains.com names the mountain among its top ten North American resorts for its 207 centimetre base by Jennifer Smith

If there’s one thing every ski resort needs, it’s snow and Big White is king of the hill in this department. According to snowbrains.com, the resort is among the top ten destinations with some of the best snow base numbers in North America, despite the clement overtones of 2014. “We are having a tremendous season,” Michael J. Ballingall, vice-president of sales and marketing, told the Kelowna Capital News as the honour hit the papers late January. The month was largely characterized by the kind of bluebird skies and balmy afternoons that

make cutting a line in a plaid shirt, tank and Gore-Tex jean snow pants a feasible fashion statement—unless you’re shunning hipsters. And yet, the early season opening had the base sitting safely over 200 centimetres, enough to make roasting away in the beer garden after soaring over the clouds the best stressfree way to spend the weekend. All of the mountain’s runs have remained open since the season started with record-breaking attendance. While still opening two weeks ahead of schedule on November 16, Big White continued its tradition of offering locals a little slice

of Honolulu this winter as the Central Okanagan weather Gods proffered a temperature inversion for January. As a thick cloud of fog rolled into the valley and parked itself over Kelowna for days on end, wreaking havoc for travellers trying to fly in and out of the valley, the sun beat down on the hill. Environment Canada weather specialist Doug Lundquist said it would take at least a week for the fog to lift, due to the lack of solar energy, but sure enough the sun continued to shine on the hill. Big White nonetheless came in seventh on the Snowbrains compilation with a 207 cm base.

As the Vancouver Sun’s Steven Threndyle pointed out, it was up against some pretty far-flung competition. “Some of the resorts rounding out the top 10 are not exactly on the beaten resort track,” he wrote. “Eaglecrest, on the Alaska panhandle, may receive a wealth of accumulation one year, and have it washed away by torrential rains.” Eagle Crest, incidentally, had the deepest snowpack with 314 cm and only one other mountain from B.C. made the list. Kimberley was given the tenth spot.

The issues seem to change from year to year, says Kees Wouters, a painter from Salt Spring Island who winters at Big White. Woulters is among the founding directors of Art E’scape @ Big White, a mountain-based fine arts group formed amid a flurry of activity and enthusiasm for growing the creative community on the hill. “We know not everyone comes here to ski,” said co-founder Debbie Hendry when the group was formed in 2013. “There are spouses, maybe, who might prefer to do something else, while their other half is out skiing.” It appears they were right. The small but multi-national, multi-ethnic group who spoke of community and a sense of belonging in a way one might expect to hear in a city planning seminar found members. Far beyond the importance of spurring creativity or sharing ideas on technique, those who joined seemed to collectively yearn for a sense of home on the hill in a manner that would go beyong feeling at ease on a black diamond ski run. The groups was varied. In addition to Hendry, from Australia, they included artists like the globetrotting Jee Suan Phuah, a retiree from Singapore interested in acrylic painting. Wouters, a former high school teacher from Salt Spring Island, was keen Continued on page 8

Art E'scape OPEN STUDIO Thursday, February 27th 1-4 pm in the Ski Patrol Hut Continued from page 7 to find others working in a wide variety of mediums as he does. Marilyn Kennedy of Saskatchewan expressed a particular passion for painting snow scenes. And then there was Judy Poole, a self-professed non-artist with a passion for organizing, who helped them all connect and file the paperwork necessary to obtain non-profit status. They were excited and passionate and off to an impressive start. Like any fledgling non-profit, or artist for that matter, the work that would come put the group to the test. They struggled with meeting space, but managed to hold shows. They discovered studio time easily degenerated into organizing time. And they figured out that committees were needed to spearhead exhibition projects if the group was ever to flourish. They needed some ground rules. “We made the decision that you can’t be making decisions

by Karen Rempel

when you’re not having a meeting,” said Poole. They set aside administrative time. They also discovered the depth of talent on the hill is deep enough to fulfil every demonstration or teaching session needed. If there is one key hole they still need to fill it's publicity. While the group is planning two shows this season and meets once a week—Thursdays in the ski patrol hut from 1-4 p.m.— they’re not sure many know. It’s a common complaint among upstart non-profit enterprises, typically thin on funding with robust aims, but Art E’scape

has some serious support. In speaking with Michael J. Ballingall, Poole found discovered watercolour painter Alex Fong has a history with the hill and managed to secure him for their March show. He will be doing demonstrations and has them some painted new work. A lover of wine, and painting the elixir, these winter pieces may wind up paired with a bevy of tasting options. Staged on the same day as Big Whites Spring Wine Gala in Support of the Big White Racers, Poole has turned her sights to sussing out a winery or two to lend support to the show.

Art E’scape @ Big White is hosting an open studio Thursday, Feb. 27, 1-4 p.m. in the Ski Patrol Hut. Stop in to visit the Art E’scape @ Big White Open Studio Exhibition demonstrations on pottery (1:30-1:45 p.m. by Marilyn Kennedy), mixed media (2:30-2:45 p.m. by Kees Wouters) and photography (3:30-3:45 p.m. Marc van Roechoudt). The Art E’scape @ Big White Exhibition featuring special guest Alex Fong runs March 21 (1-9 p.m), 22 (10 a.m.-9 p.m.) and 23 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.). For more information on the group or their shows email artescapebigwhite@hotmail.com

Watercolour painter Alex Fong is always one to lend a hand, often by painting a piece or two by Jennifer Smith

Alex Fong is to the Okanagan art scene what snow is to the mountain. He’s also first in line to help community causes. When people like Judy Poole, of Art E’scape @ Big White, come calling, Fong

not only remembers their name, but strikes up a conversation. “I think that’s what really impressed me,” said Poole. “I first met him at ArtWalk and when I bumped into him (several continued on page 10

Ever-gracious Fong supports Art E'scape by contributing to their March exhibition Continued from page 9 months later) he remembered me immediately and was open to coming and talking with us.” As it turns out, the relationship between Poole’s new art group and Fong, the watercolour painter known for his quirky quails, love of wine and colour, has gone well beyond chatter. Fong is producing some new work to show on the mountain at the group’s request, adding a little name recognition to the impressive array of talent already contained in the Art E’scape @ Big White Exhibition. “I’m a great après skier,” he said when contacted about the show. For Fong, the opportunity follows on an exhibition he did on the mountain several years earlier with painter Dina Kotler, wife of developer and philanthropist Mel Kotler, who was known as “Kelowna’s Million Dollar Man” for being the first to raise the sum in the annual Central Okanagan United Way campaign.

The show caught the eye of Big White’s Michael J. Ballingall, vice president of sales and marketing for the hill, and he suggested Poole and Fong connect. The result is a very playful penguin collection whimsically speckled with Fong’s signature rainbow of confetti. The painting will be among the winter-themed works he submits to the show. Fong, it would seem, is prone to helping others. The night before this interview was done, 14 young Sparks, the youngest of the Girl Guide clan, were learning how to paint a chickadee under his guidance. Teaching, both paid and voluntary, is also something he doesn’t mind dabbling in. “I taught myself how to paint. I always say that when I talk to kids,” he said. Fong figures it’s important others know how accessible art is, noting that while he went to interior design school and was introduced to watercolour paintContinued on page 14

Fong taught himself to paint… Continued from page 10 ing to produce renderings, it was really the time he spent in the library researching and seeking out mentors and teachers, the trial and error that put his name on the map. Accepted to top Vancouver galleries early on, he went on to tour with the Western Lights Artist’s Group, managing to turn a passion into a career. “Watercolour was just fascinating right from the start,” he said. “…I could do 12 paintings and every one of them would be different. Water dries faster or slower if it’s wetter and drier. It being such an important element on the planet, it just felt right.” From the beginning, Fong’s work has centred on the environment. During his interior design days—he trained in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey—the

focus was on natural materials. Vancouver was a global epicentre for the environmental movement and conservation controversy with Greenpeace waging campaigns the save the whales and fishermen beating the harbour seals to stop them from eating the fish. Both subjects took shape under his brush, but when he moved to the Okanagan and was invited to work at Quails Gate Winery, he fell in love with packs of little birds. The flippant head plumes of quail scurrying beneath the vines now feature prominently in his work. These days Fong is as likely to produce a purple cow as a colourful vineyard. Ash Grunwald’s love affair with the mountains For a man who lives to sing the blues, this oneman-band Australian performer sure professes an upbeat take on the rugged Canadian mountains by Jennifer Smith

Ash Grunwald just loves music. He loves it enough he spend over $1000 on equipment to ensure his new instrument obsession, the harmonica, has perfect pitch. This dedication to polish is a bit of a new thing for Grunwald who came of age shunning practicing for the make-it-or-break-it curve a live audience provides. With his wife and two children waiting at home in Australia, he now figures any career worth sacrificing time with his family to pursue is worth getting absolutely right—and that means regular trips to Canada, his touring home away from home. “I love the people. I just think it’s easy. It’s fun. Canada in the winter is so beautiful I just lament not boarding more,” he said in interview from home on

the eve of Australia Day. Grunwald makes regular trips through B.C.’s mountains mid-winter to enjoy grand jams among the rugged Canuck ski buffs, but it’s a rare day when he actually gets to strap on the board and head out on the slopes. Now five trips deep into Revelstoke powder, he’s only just making this winter 2014 tour the year he hits the epic hill. These Canadian tours are what planted the snowboarding obsession in the bluesman’s mind. It was on this side of the Pacific, as he launched a music career built on relentless touring, that the affable beach-bathed performer got to dip a dreadlock in snow. His wife, the highly acclaimed roots musician Danni Carr, with whom he has a new baby and a five-year-old daughter named Continued on page 16

Ash Grunwald is a soulful Blues aficionado with a heart-felt need to please the crowd and go snowboarding.

Continued from page 15 Sunny, was the one to suggest he try snowboarding. “I was like 'no way' because I knew I’d get addicted. And sure enough, she didn’t see me for the rest of the trip,” Grunwald said. Borrowing a board and clothes—not to mention a dodgy

lift pass—he soon became a man obsessed with n a t u r e ’s c h a m pagne. Naturally he’s had a pretty good time on this mountain. “The last time I played Big White it was absolutely amazing. The gig just went off. It was packed. People were excited and the night just had a great feel to it…But I was in a different world to many of the punters inebriation wise,” he said. “I was stone cold sober.” Touring without imbibing is not how Grunwald describes his style. In fact, he’s pretty up front about suggesting he's rarely one

to shun a beer. By his own admission, he grew up enjoying a few beverages on stage as he worked out material and shared a good laugh with his audience. While this might not sound so out of the ordinary, once one sees him play it’s quite shocking. When Grunwald beats his drum, manual dexterity and an unfathomable hot bed of energy merge in a manner so keenly orchestrate to cover every component of sound it’s hard to imagine him developing the act under the scrutiny of live audience, let alone beer in hand. Whether he’s revelling in the simplicity of an organic evening, going crazy on the stumpbox while adding in a soulful guitar slide, or grooving along as the new technology-loving beats fiend he can also be, Grunwald’s hands are busy and he is always trying to push boundaries.

ABSOLUT bartending

brand’s premium label, and added organic sugar syrup, Dillon’s lemon bitters, bitter cranberry and citric acid orange oil. Clearly, it was a hit. The drink was also an aboutface for the competition when compared with the concoction that won the inaugural event. Created by Grant Sceney of Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, the Absolut Beta cocktail was a combination of citrus and basil with a decidedly spring flare. Bartending competitions may have been around for years, but the global explosion of craft distilleries is bringing far more attention to the art of making a cocktail. And just down the hill in Vernon, Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery is turning the cornucopia

of fruits available in the valley into beverages—to international recognition. In March 2013, the business earned Distillery of the Year,

Spirit of the Year and World Class Distillery designations at the World Spirits Awards in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Newly crowned top mixologist Nathan Head is heading to the Absolut Vodka distillery in Sweden. On the first of this month, he made his way to the head of the pack in Big White’s second annual Absolut Bartending Competition, earning the people’s choice for the best of the eight bartenders’ drinks and winning the coveted trip. “When you’re working for judges, you tend to make it a little bit more complex, spirit heavy and you especially want to accentuate the spirit hosting the event. You don’t hide it. When it’s for the general public, you go a little bit sweeter, simpler and you make it so you can make a lot of them,” he said. Head’s Post-Modern Cosmo #45 used Absolut Elyx, the

Nathan Head brings a little New Orleans flare out from Calgary The winner of Big White’s Absolut bartending competion talks speakeasy drinks and setting the bar to become a craftsman

by Jennifer Smith

The week before he landed on Big White to assemble a winning libation for the Absolut bartending competition, Nathan Head was in Los Angeles. One taste of the Postmodern Cosmopolitan #45—an absolutely wonderful cocktail, by all accounts—makes it obvious his win was no fluke. He has plenty of “bar smarts.” As of January, he’s also completed the course. BarSmarts is an invite-only American training program offered in various locations throughout the United States and it’s just one of the edu-

cational top-ups on the menu for Head this season. He’s also earning the prestigious Certified Specialist of Spirits designation from the Society of Wine Educators. A lot of effort goes into his vocation of choice and yet, this wasn’t his dream job. “The plan was always to do something else,” said Head. “I just never thought I would keep at it.” Ten years ago, as he rounded the corner on 30, pouring drinks somehow morphed into a craft worth spending a lifetime refining. In an introspective moment,

he described himself as the sort of soul who would have been an artist if he had the talent. He settled for developing the kind of hole-in-the-wall establishment, where even Calgary’s oil-rich enthusiastically toss down their pay cheques in support. He shares the Milk Tiger Lounge with his business partner, Rich Adams, an artsy type who worked in the Glenbow Museum in the years before they opened up shop. The politically correct skinny on the name Milk Tiger comes out of the prohibition-era New

Orleans speakeasies where Tiger’s Milk was a “make-you-goblind kind of gin.” At just 60 seats, the Milk Tiger Lounge bubbles with the enthusiasm of a tight following. “It’s an expression of who we are. If we were normal guys, we would have day jobs by now,” said Head with a laugh as he tried to describe the atmosphere. Shunning glossy pics of drinks for a quirky showcase of their character, Milk Tiger’s corporate Twitter feed hosts a Kurt Cobain snap, an image of two Shetland Continued on page 23

Big White racer’s career takes off

by Kevin Parnell

Ned Ireland’s busy winter on the Nor Am ski cross circuit continues this weekend with an event in Copper Mountain, Colorado, followed by trips to the Eastern U.S. and Canada. Ireland, 19, currently is third overall in the season standings, and second among Canadian racers. The former Big White Racer is coming off a podium finish last weekend at a Nor Am Cup race last weekend at Panorama near Invermere. Ireland took third spot in the event behind American Robert Mahre and Ontario’s Kevin MacDonald. The Nor Am tour is the spring-

board to the World Cup circuit where Kelowna’s Kelsey Serwa and Ian Deans currently compete. Ireland fore ran the World Cup in early December at Nakiska after earning an invite to the race, as he was just short in qualifying points. He also came second in the pro division at the Western Open Ski Cross series race at Big White. Ireland is a student at UBC Okanagan enrolled in the human kinetics program.

Ned Ireland, right, placed third at a Nor Am Cup race held at Panorama Resort, January 25, 2014.

Skinnylove by Jennifer Smith

With a nickname like Skinnylove, Josh Eades seems almost destined to wind up in a February magazine. And yet, the natural fit of his life with girlfriend Renee McIntyre-Ellis is not so much a story as a sound. These two go together like two sides of a seatbelt, the shoot button and the shutter or the middle finger-thumb combo and a catchy little tune. “We would just relax together,” said McIntyre-Ellis as she recalled the beginning of their romance. Trained as a nurse, but working as a barmaid, McIntyre-Ellis had come over from Australia and taken a job at Snowshoe Sam’s where she made fast friends with Lisa Bailey, Skinnylove’s roommate. They had dinners at the house. They went snowboarding. They lived the life, as one does on a mountain. They went home—separately. Then Eades, whose return to Australia brought him to Mount Buller, asked Bailey, who had taken a job on Mount Hawthorn, to come to Buller. Today they are unique for a pair for Australians as all but

Valentine's Day at Big White will present opportunities for new and established romances. three weeks of their year is spent in the snow. McIntyre-Ellis grew up with the white stuff. Her mother did seasons in Whistler and made it a part of her life. As a pair of powder hounds, they make annual trips to places like Bali and Mexico, but otherwise alternate between North American and Australian resorts. He works in The Village Rider and she at Snowshoe Sam’s when at Big White. “He’s unusual. He’s always happy and smiling. He’s everyone’s friend,” she said. He’s also six-foot, eight-inches tall and a

bag of bones, according to his girlfriend, who loves his look. “I just found him interesting,” she said. Love and mountain energy go hand-in-hand, but there are ways to accelerate the hunt for the perfect partner. In the seven minutes it takes to ride the Bullet chairlift, one can make a connection. Big White’s matchmakers have devised a unique speed-dating event from 2-3 p.m. on Valentine’s Day to see if love is in the air. For those who may already have a loved one, a champagne

brunch and horse-drawn sleigh ride can be booked for $45 including eggs, pancakes and Canadian bacon. If romance on the Gondola is your cup of tea, an $18 private roundtrip can be booked with chocolate-covered strawberries, music, candles and satin pillows. Big White's award-winning mixologist calls Calgary home Continued from page 18 ponies wearing sweaters and a cockatiel woman in a pink hat sent out with the quip “the birds are out in force tonight.” “Since the beginning of Milk Tiger, some five years ago, the bar has been quietly working with a handful of others to create a sense of community and to start a dialogue about what goes into making great cocktails,” Notable.ca wrote of their efforts. Yet on any given night, they’re still most likely to be serving an Old Fashioned. Calgary isn’t over the craze, he admits.

The zaniest drink Head’s ever been asked for is the ramos gin fizz, a five-minute shaker bartenders the world over loathe even if it does taste fabulous. With eight ingredients–including egg white, gin and milk—it was a big enough hit in its day to see scores of bartenders lined up behind a bar shaking away, minute after painstaking minute, to meet the demand. Mass production isn’t really their thing at the Milk Tiger Lounge. To find out what all the fuss is about head to 4th Street and 14th Avenue in Calgary. Head will be pouring a round.

A time-consuming cocktail to produce, the Ramos Gin Fizz is a bartender's nightmare, despite its fabulous taste.
