by Tom Fletcher In a speech from the throne that echoed Premier Christy Clark’s election campaign, the B.C. government promised Tuesday to begin a 10-year skills training plan to drive industrial development. Lt. Governor Judith Guichon read the speech in the ceremonial beginning of the B.C. legislature session. It touched on the B.C. Liberal government’s familiar themes, including the need to train and retain citizens to fill one million jobs due to growth and baby boomer retirements in the next

3 Facts you need to Know About...

The importance of Small Business in BC

B.C. was recognized for cutting red tape for small businesses by Canadian Federation of Independent Business. B.C. is the only province to be given an “A” rating for cutting red tape for the third year in a row.

Small business is the engine of our economy accounting for 98% of business activity in the province. For this important reason the government is committed to making British Columbia the most small business friendly province in Canada.

Our Government has announced five priority projects to further cut red tape. These new projects include everything from making it easier for entrepreneurs to find out how to start a new restaurant, to simplifying the way to apply for government contracts. Our end goal is to ensure that every single regulatory requirement in BC is necessary, meaningful and serves a purpose. We’re proud to help clear the path for small business so they can focus on what matters most- growing their businesses and creating jobs. Because when they succeed, BC succeeds.

decade. “British Columbians can look forward to enhancements to the Industry Training Authority, as well as the re-engineering of our secondary and postsecondary institutions to ensure our students have the skills for the jobs of the future,” Guichon told MLAs gathered for the first time in 2014. Employers and job seekers will be watching for details in the provincial budget, to be presented by Finance Minister Mike de Jong on Feb. 18. Opposition critics have focused on the government’s reductions of skills training and the shortage of spaces and equipment for industrial training. The speech also promises a new 10-year plan for transportation, to build on major road, bridge and transit works that have become contentious in the Lower Mainland as it struggles to keep up with population growth. In education, the government renewed Clark’s goal of a personalized education plan for each student and “an agreement to ensure a decade of labour peace in our classrooms.” That goal comes as the government pursues an appeal of the latest court judgment in favour of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation over removal of class size and support staff from their union contract. Speaking to reporters after the speech, Clark emphatically denied the conclusion of a B.C. Supreme Court justice that her government engineered the 2012 teacher strike to build public support for an imposed settlement. NDP leader Adrian Dix called the speech “particularly lacking in vision or substance,” adding that it contains nothing for B.C. residents who “don’t work in the industries of liquefied natural gas or liquor.” In addition to touting the future benefits of LNG exports and pending liquor law reforms, the speech recounts increases in Asian trade, the ongoing “core review” to reduce provincial spending, and new union agreements that tie wage increases to an expanded economy.

Residential Con struction Performance Guide For New Homes C overed b y Home wa rraNty I NsuraNC e IN brIt IsH Colu mbI

Know When to Make a Home Insurance Claim Owners of homes with home warranty insurance can search the Residential Construction Performance Guide to find out whether concerns they have with the quality of their homes may be covered by home warranty insurance. View the Guide to find: • the minimum required performance of new homes • more than 200 performance guidelines, and • criteria to help consumers self-evaluate possible defects in 15 major construction categories.

Homeowners have a new tool at their fingertips to help them better understand how their new home should perform and how their home warranty insurance works. The Residential Construction Performance Guide is available on the Homeowner Protection Office website It explains the basics of a well constructed home and how warranty providers evaluate claims for possible design, labour or material defects in new homes. Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in B.C. is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. This simple, practical guide outlines more than 200 possible defects that are searchable online. This includes the most common defect claims that might be submitted under a home warranty insurance policy – from windows that malfunction, to driveway or interior concrete floors that have cracked, to siding that has buckled. Designed primarily for conventional low-rise, wood-frame homes, the guide also provides some helpful guidelines for the common property of multi-unit buildings.

This Guide can be viewed on the B.C. government’s Homeowner Protection Office website.

It’s free, easy and available online.

February 15 a N G l I c a N church PIe Sale 1:30-3:00pm. Proceeds to go to the anglican

Hugs: I’d like to send a huge hug out to my “hubby” Doug. Thank you a million times for working so hard to support our family so I can be a stay-at-homeMommy. The mornings are so early and cold and yet you never complain about working. You’re such a good father, an amazing best friend, and a perfect partner. Thank you my Hunny. - RNL Hugs: Many hugs and compliments to the staff at Bridge Interiors, especially Carlene. We were interested in buying two recliner chairs just before Black Friday last November.  We have purchased appliances and furniture from Bridge Interiors in the past with much satisfaction.  This purchase was no different as we were treated with great respect, understanding and patience as our needs were many with regards to the type of chair. Our final choice of the two recliners was finally reached. We received delivery of the chairs last week from two of the most adapt and friendly delivery men you could imagine. We are very happy with the workmanship and above all the comfort of the chairs.  They fit our needs perfectly. No wonder Ken Bridge is our Citizen of The Year.  His staff are the best. Kudos all around. Hugs: To the paper route lady who returned most of a generous Christmas tip that she received from an elderly senior. She felt she could not accept the sizeable amount, in all good conscience, as the senior may not have realized the amount he had placed in the envelope. It is most gratifying to see that there are still people around with strong moral values. Slugs: To all those drivers out there who give in to their obsession to be in front of everyone forcing them to pass, spray rocks and break windshields.  Since their victims follow them into the next town, it is extremely clear that this driver had no need or intent on going

any faster; they just needed to be in front. Slugs: To a certain store for not giving exchange on my American money. What a rip off! Such an insult to our American friends who spend their money up here. Hugs: To Bill at A&W. His friendly smile and good service makes our family’s day start off great. We go there more often because of him. Our kids like his friendly way. Hugs: To everyone at the Bridal Fair at St. Eugene’s on Feb. 2nd. It was a great event, thank you!!! Hugs: A huge hug to the snowplow driver who plowed our Marysville street February 4th, and then cleaned up the windrow at the end of the driveways. Thank you so much! Hugs: To all the volunteers in Cranbrook that make this a special place to live :) Slugs: To the people who leave their dog(s) outside all day and night in the cold weather. Why don’t you trade places with the dog to see how it feels? Shame on your for choosing a pet you don’t look after. Slugs: To the few unhelpful nurses at EKRH. Stop making the good nurses look bad too. Spend more time nursing than gossiping about the patients at the nurse’s station. We have ears. Hugs: To the many good, kind and courteous nurses at EKRH. You can wear your uniforms proudly. Don’t let those few others bring you down to their level. May God bless you when you smile at patients and sometimes give hugs, Hugs: To Bernice at City Hall for your cheerful help. Hugs: To Coyote Plumbing for recommending Bruder Plumbing when you were unable to help me right away. Hugs: To everyone at Spring Honda! Check back next week if you don’t see yours.

If you have a Hug or a Slug...we’d like to hear it. Simply email us at with your short quips, compliments or complaints. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is you keep it tasteful. Hugs and Slugs will be printed as space allows, if we miss yours check back next week and you will be bumped to the start of the list. You can also drop by a written submission to our office at 1510 2nd Street N. or call Shannon at (250)489-3455 or 1-800-665-2382

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Valentine's Day Presents for Gardeners It’s always interesting to trace a modern tradition back to its roots. Valentine’s Day has changed from it’s beginnings when people were celebrating the legend of Saint Valentine, a martyr in early Rome. In the 14th century, writer Geoffrey Chaucer played an instrumental part in changing the meaning to be associated with romantic love. Interestingly, in Slovenia, Saint Valentine is one of the saints of spring, the saint of good health and patron of beekeepers. A proverb says that “Saint Valentine brings the keys of roots”. With Slovenia being a solid growing zone 8, it is celebrated as the day when work in fields and vineyards commences. In our more wintery climate, it is way too early to talk about the beginning of spring. It is, however, a good time to bring a little colour and excitement to your loved ones’ lives. Flowers, cards and chocolates are some of the go-to presents for your spouse, your Mom, that helpful neighbour or friendly coworker. Especially people who are gardeners often also enjoy cut flowers or flowering indoor plants. Finding the right flower for them can be as intimidating as cooking for a gourmet chef. It is important to pay attention to each individual person, making the gift personal and feeding their inner gardener. Is there a flower your sweetheart is particularly fond of ? Maybe she likes growing her roses? Why not give her a dozen roses and add some special tokens, such as a rose pruner, a pair of rose cutting gloves, a book on roses or even a nice vase to refill with her own blossoms later in the year? If you want to break with tradition, look to new and exciting varieties. A Bird of Paradise flower is an exotic specimen that is sure to add colour and sophistication to any home. Lilies not only add splendor, often they can also dazzle the senses with their intoxicating scent. Flowers can also be used in arrangements, keeping their traditional symbolism in mind. This art was perfected in the Victorian era when women would carry around small bouquets with messages encoded in the language of flowers: strands of ivy signified fidelity and friendship while gardenias conveyed a secret love. It is no accident that red roses - signifying love - are often paired with baby’s breath and fern, representing everlasting love and sincerity. If you are looking for a more subtle message of adoration, you might want to choose small sunflowers. Oak-leaved geraniums speak of true friendship. If you want your Valentine’s greeting to last longer, not many gardeners would be disappointed with a plant instead of cut flowers. How about an African violet? Traditionally their blooms come in various shades of purple, but over time, hybrids have resulted in white, pink and even yellow flowers. Orchids symbolize luxury, beauty and strength. Pick a plant that is already in bloom, but with plenty of unopened buds to keep it in bloom for weeks to come. Still not sure what to get your sweetheart? Come down to your local garden centre for inspiration. Till next time… Happy Valentine’s Day.

Kenneth Franklin Anderson 1938 - 2014 It is with sadness we announce the sudden passing of Ken Anderson on January 14, 2014 at the age of 75 years, at his home in Cranbrook, British Columbia. He was born Kenneth Franklin Anderson on June 17, 1938 in Morris, Manitoba. Ken was a friendly, kind hearted person that had friends in many places. He always had time to chat and share a story with others. He spent time during his life in Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and Mexico. He worked for CBC in Edmonton as a Personnel Manager. He operated a Limo Cargo service at the Cranbrook airport. He was an accomplished pilot and often joked that there were old pilots, and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots. In his younger years he loved to surprise the family, and he would drop in to visit unannounced in his airplane or pick-up truck. After a successful working career, he was able to retire and enjoy his retirement years. He loved to travel and enjoyed trips with his camper trailer and motorcycle. He really cared about the people he met and the places he saw and enjoyed the simple things in life. He was a poetic writer, story teller, and dabbled in woodworking and photography. He was very active and loved to walk his 4 mile journey every morning and then meander up for morning coffee at the local coffee shop. He will be greatly missed and is survived by his brother Joe and wife Jan of Prince George, B.C., sister-in-law Bernice Anderson and nephews Joe Anderson (& Pat), Gord Anderson (& Claire), Andy Anderson (& Karen), Wes Anderson (& Julie) and niece Lynn Rempel of Morris Manitoba. He also had numerous great nieces and nephews and was looking forward to the arrival of his next greatgreat nephew or niece. He loved children and often said that babies were such a great way to start people. He had numerous friends and neighbors across the country that will miss him as well. He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Anna Anderson, brother Walter Anderson, brother Murray Anderson, and nephew Dale Rempel, all of Morris, Manitoba. Cremation has taken place and his remains will be laid to rest at a later date. Donations may be made in Ken’s memory to the charity of your choice and he would be so pleased. The family wishes to thank Penny Coyle and Uncle Ken’s friends and others whom were there to show their love and concern at his time of passing. McPherson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and we appreciate their professional service and care shown to us through a difficult time. “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose...All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” - Helen Keller Condolences for the family can be offered at:
