Cindy Sjoholm has been removed as executive director of the Bread of Life. A fixture at the Bread of Life for almost seven years, Sjoholm was suddenly relieved of her duties by BOL board members suddenly on Jan. 14. “They just told me that my services were no longer needed
at the BOL and that I wasn’t to come around the facility,” Sjoholm said. “They never gave me a reason why. I don’t know. You have to ask them.” Bread of Life board president Robert Gunter-Smith said that the dismissal was the result of a unanimous decision by the board’s seven members. Gunter-Smith agreed that the BOL is consistently in

furnace and make some other facility upgrades. And there was also the man who donated $10,000 to replace a leaky roof and asked to remain anonymous.“It’s amazing how this town will look after its own,” she said. The memories all roll into one, Sjoholm said, but they have a common theme – respect. “The respect we got from agencies, businesses and patrons. I’ll always
remember that,” Sjoholm said. The Bread of Life is part of a group of organizations that helps the Alberni Valley’s less fortunate. Sjoholm built a rapport with several agencies and hopes to find a niche in the same line of work, she said. Fire destroys Argyle Street building SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
A fire that gutted an Argyle Street building on Friday of the Family Day long weekend was deliberately set, Port Alberni RCMP said Tuesday. Fire and police officials finished their investigation on Saturday and concluded that the fire, which started inside the building is suspicious. Port Alberni Fire Department received a call at 1:23 a.m. and when crews arrived there was smoke pouring from the eaves of the entire building. Flames were showing on the east side, along Second Avenue, fire Chief Tim Pley said. The fire was large enough that Beaver Creek and Sproat Lake fire departments attended, the RCMP responded, city crews were on hand and both BC Hydro and Fortis BC were involved. The building, which has been up for sale,

is more than 60 years old. It comprises four units, two of which are leased out. McGill and Associates Engineering Ltd. is a longtime tenant of the building, Pley said. The other unit
is leased to the Nuuchah-nulth Tribal Council’s Quu?asa program. Another person is using a unit for storage and a garage facility, Pley said. “It’s been a well-
functioning building.” Weather and location proved to be challenging for fire crews, Pley said. “The cold is a challenge. As soon as we started moving water it turned into a
skating rink. Between the ice and the slope it was dangerous for our people to move around,” he said. It also affected the way crews could fight the fire, limiting places they could place equipment. “We were challenged by the ice.” City crews brought in a brine truck, spread rock salt and had heavy equipment scraping the ice and removing it as fast as possible. The building’s size—it’s about 12,500 square feet—and configuration made it difficult to access, Pley said. “Thankfully, there’s nobody living in the building.” Many similar buildings along Argyle Street have commercial or retail businesses on the ground floor and residences above, but not this one, he added. There were residents living above the Port Pub, who were warned that they might have to be evacuated.

Computers holding critical data about city, regional district and First Nations projects were damaged in a blaze that gutted McGill Engineering and Associates. But a unique offsite service that regularly backs up files on the firm’s server preserved all data up to the night of the fire. “It’s as though nothing were gone,” said company president Brad West. McGill does business with the city, AlberniClayoquot Regional District and some First Nations. Recent projects include work at the West Coast and Alberni Valley landfills, as well as seismic upgrades of the Sproat Lake and Beaver Creek fire halls. Friday’s early
morning fire heavily damaged the building the business is located in. The firm’s computer hard drives may be salvageable but until West is able to enter the building he won’t know for sure, he said. Meanwhile, the business has set up shop temporarily beside the Coastal Community Credit Union. McGill is already re-outfitted with new equipment and is downloading all the files from the offsite backup. The idea of using an offsite backup service came about five years ago. “We used to use tape backup but that relied on who could remember to do the back up so we chose another route,” West said. The business engaged the services of a US firm to regularly back their files up remotely.

with school closures and reconfiguration looming in School District 70, their lives are going to become complicated. Hundal and her husband moved to the area near Wood three years ago because of the amenities, including a nearby daycare for her oneyear-old son. Rani Lal feels the same way: she works shift work at the Best Western Barclay Hotel, and said it will be hard for her if her children have to go to separate schools (i.e. daycare close to home and elementary school elsewhere). “I’m a working woman. I work shift work. It’s very difficult to drop off the kids and go to work.” A lot of low income families live in the area.

Close schools early and get it over with. That’s the common theme heard at the school closure re-configuration meetings hosted by School District, superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. The district held two meetings about the issue on Feb. 4-5 at Alberni District Secondary School. More than 160 people in total attended the sessions, Pinkerton said. “Adjusting to this is hard and it’s emotional for everyone, But I think people recognize that we have to do something,” Pinkerton said. Budget issues have forced the district to begin drawing up a plan that would see three Valley schools
closed and the rest re-configured to K-7 and Grades 8-12. Three options were laid out at the public meetings that would involved closing three schools over one or three years. The three schools are Gill, Eighth Avenue and Wood Elementary Schools. The schools were chosen in part because of declining enrolment. Gill school has 202 students presently with that number expected to dip to 190 within a decade; Wood School has 139 students and is expected to stay steady at 140; Eighth Avenue has 165 students and projected to lose another 14 before this September. According to Pinkerton, most people at the public sessions favour the first option: closing Wood, Gill and Eighth
Avenue; re-configuring the remaining schools to K-7; re-purposing Wood to be part of Alberni District Secondary School, which would be converted to Grades 8-12. “There’s a common recognition that people don’t like closing schools but if we’re going to do it then do it right away,” he said. “It’s like ‘go big or go home.” If SD70 trustees choose in March to go ahead with the plan that then closures and re-configuration will take place in September, Pinkerton said. Change usually means layoffs but how many remains to be seen, Alberni District Teachers’ Union President Ken Zydyk said. “Moving away from middle schools could mean fewer teaching positions.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Employees with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council’s Quu’asa program have been forced to move their office after a fire destroyed the building where they were previously located, at Argyle Street and Second Avenue. Despite losing their office space, Quu’asa workers, who provide cultural support to Nuu-chah-nulth people, are hard at work.
According to Kim Rai of Quu’asa, he and his staff are still open for business and were busy connecting with their downtown partner service organizations getting the word out about the fire. Notices were placed at The Bread of Life, NETP, Port Alberni Community and Women’s Society and other service providers. Quu’asa clients may continue to reach their workers through the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council at 250-724-5757; please ask for Andrea Pettigrew. Calls will be forwarded to individual worker’s
cell phones. The nine displaced Quu’asa workers will work out of the Mission Road NTC offices for the time being. They will eventually relocate back to the downtown

Losing the school will be a hardship for many families, Windley-Henderson added. She thinks the district can find a way to keep the school for elementary students. “They have two middle schools; why don’t they put [Grade 8 students] in the high school and leave the elementary schools K-7. It would be a lot easier.” Seva Dhaliwal, whose grown children all attended Wood, is advocating for the retention of Wood as an elementary school. “Young families living in central areas of Port Alberni have a right to expect at least one elementary school in their area,” she said.

Dhaliwal was a young mother herself when Calgary Elementary School was closed in 1997. “I understand what these families are going through,” she said. “That time was very hard. I had just come from India, I couldn’t speak English, I couldn’t drive the car and my husband worked at a logging camp.” The Dhaliwals eventually moved closer to Wood school so their three children could attend that school, she said. “I had a lot of involvement in that school. Is NDP revival imminent? Prescription pot pretense ends soon Now we know the when. Perhaps soon we’ll learn the who. The BC NDP announced a month ago that it will announce its new leader to succeed Adrian Dix on Sept. 28. That leader will be chosen by party members in a vote to be conducted Sept. 24-27 over the phone and online. The party’s president, Craig Keating, said he’s looking forward to an “exciting leadership election with great candidates.” Except, so far there aren’t any candidates. Great or otherwise. Three federal NDP Members of Parliament from B.C. have said they’re not interested. Peter Julian, Fin Donnelly and Nathan Cullen all bowed out even before they bowed in. Kennedy Stewart, the MP for BurnabyDouglas, is still mulling his decision. As is Jinny Sims, the federal NDP representative from Newton-North Delta. Their reticence is understandable. As members of the official opposition in Ottawa, they’re all strong voices for issues they and their constituents believe in. They’re members of a party that captured voters’ imaginations in the last federal election and continues to get attention countering decisions and legislation made by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government. B.C. politics, on the other hand, is a snake pit. Nobody knows that better than Dix, who seemed to have victory in last spring’s provincial campaign in the bag but found himself delivering a concession speech instead. Now that the date has been set for the party’s leadership vote, most observers expect candidates to begin announcing their intentions as well. And no doubt as those names are known, and candidates start hustling for support, the always entertaining world of B.C. politics will burn with renewed energy and entertainment. — Burnaby NewsLeader

Apparently smoking lots of weed really is bad for your math skills. Dana Larsen, who spearheaded the illconceived and failed decriminalization petition last year, heads up the serious-looking “Medical Cannabis Dispensary.” It has done so well at its location in the drug bazaar of East Hastings Street that it’s got a branch office on Vancouver’s tony west side. Its official-looking forms have a long list of conditions where only a confirmation of diagnosis is required. In addition to genuine conditions such as side effects of chemotherapy, it includes anxiety, psoriasis, spinal cord injury and even “substance addictions/withdrawal.”

Mailbag: Feedback on snow and being snowed New crossing not needed To the Editor,
Re: Referendum would decide Roger crossing: Chopra, Feb. 6. What is this lovely city of ours coming to? Does Port Alberni’s city council think that the people in this fair city have extra funds for tax increases to fund another crossing or some other great idea? I do somewhat disagree with Coun. Hira Chopra on the idea that the people who grew up here, and some us who came like myself in the early 1960s would want a second crossing to North Port. This should have been dealt with in the 1970s-1980s when this city was booming, lots of people were working here and young families were moving here. That Age Friendly Alberni survey I did on hard copy, I’m pretty sure there was no mention of a second crossing being needed in this valley unless there was a place for comments. If you want to spend that type of funds it should be on our water, sewer and roads. How many more seniors and families that are on a fix income are going to live here when this so-called idea will probably push them
out of the homes that some of them built? I was glad to see our councillors have voted to a raise and that they’re looking at cutting services. When I worked for Catalyst Paper Corp. I will get “0” raise this May. I still get that I’m paying taxes to keep my job. I could go on but I think a few more people in this great city will write in to the paper about the same great idea. With budget comes tax hike To the Editor,
Our mayor and councillors are elected by the citizens of Port Alberni. We must somehow make them understand that a zero tax increase is the only acceptable option. When will our elected officials understand the basic budget process? Most of us know the difference between the “must haves” and the “nice to haves”. Council must return to the very basic needs for our city. We must sustain our police and fire services, ensure our basic need for safe water and maintain our roads. We must honour our present negotiated contracts with unions.
All management wage increases should be based on individual performance review— not on an automatic salary entitlement. In my opinion, a beach or a chicken coop for lost or abandoned chickens are not “must haves”. It was reported by council that a review of all departments at city hall was a part of the budget process. This is a start. In addition, council should consider the following: • Eliminate trips to China and the like; replace conference attendance by utilizing accessible technologies. • Re-assign and share duties among departments and eliminate new hiring. Review current procedures and cut unnecessary tasks. It broadens staff knowledge of the organization. • Review all aspects of new equipment acquisitions. Review street maintenance and snow removal sessions. Start an “Adopt a Street” program and expand it to sidewalks or parks. • Cut all “on contract” persons hired to conduct surveys, projects, etc. Surveys could be done by volunteers. Projects and surveys could also be assigned to students as part of the curriculum. The experience would be
valuable towards their chosen careers while saving money for taxpayers. • Review the need for the economic development position. The chamber of commerce could take on the challenge. •Revisit the tax policies for small and large businesses. The global economy is in declining mode; the city’s residents can no longer support the inequitable tax burden. We must let our elected officials know that we can no longer sustain their lifestyles on our dime. Monique Begg, Port Alberni

I think we should all give a big thank you to the residents of Port Alberni who diligently shovelled their sidewalks after this week’s snowfall and a big raspberry to the businesses who did not. One of them told me that they pay taxes and that the city is responsible for sidewalk snow removal. Well, folks, here’s a flash: we all pay taxes and yet all of us are responsible for clearing the sidewalks around our properties so get with the program, please. It’s been three years since any VIA passenger train travelled up or down
Vancouver Island. We keep getting told a train service agreement (TSA) is “imminent”, but nothing materializes. Hypothesis time: You are a corporate entity (VIA) with a few million dollars worth of heritage rail equipment. You place this equipment
with an entity that is supposed to run it for you under contract (TSA). You pay the bills for fuel, labour and ticket sales. You pay a provision to the operator to run the passenger train system for you on maintained infrastructure that you pay to maintain.
When you hear rumblings that the system in operation is not up to snuff with maintenance, you query your hired contractor and he assures you all is fine. Upon hearing of the maintenance problem over and over, you send in you own team of inspectors
and you find the rail system to be in such poor condition that you pull your tour (not commuter) contract. Would you be willing to again get into a contract with these people who have misled you about rail conditions and who basically did not live up

Older cameras still good in a pinch

Last summer I rode around Town on the Vespa Virgin taking photographs with Les’s older Nikon 8.1 megapixel camera. My goal was to prove that you don’t need a fancy shmanzy camera to create brilliant images, that true creation is all in the eye of the beholder. I was partly right and partly wrong, let me tell you why. Les and I were talking around the wood fire the other day and Les said “my first Nikon camera takes the best photos, look at the 11”x 14” photograph on the wall”(Les had taken a photograph of the old gas pump at the Mill). I understood that she was talking about her original 3-megapixel Nikon (she has three cameras, all Nikon).
I decided to take the three meg camera for a spin outside and see what would come up. Les was right, the camera really came through, in fact it was a hundred times better than the newer 8.1-megapixel camera (exaggeration). Today I decided that I was going to put the old feller through the mill so that I could write it up for you Oh Loyal Readers. I went to Argyle and shot the mountain top, I went further down Argyle into the so called Arts District, shot Cher’s Landing, the old Postal building as well as the row of stores going down toward Third Avenue. Jack Tsai and I had a chat and on I went down to Harbour Quay for more shots. Did I mention that it was about -2 degrees with a bitterly cold wind making the real temperature about -6 degrees. Coming from Montreal you would
think that I was used to freezing temperatures but alas after forty years of living in BC the body does not remember how to act. By now I am shivering but the show must go on, so I put on my gloves, take photographs of the Centennial Breakwater, head and shoulders of the wooden man near the end of the pier, up the inlet with a gorgeous 45 degree sun, the covered walkway and of course the traditional shot up Argyle Street with a snow covered mountain as a backdrop. Came home, downloaded the photos and reveled in the image quality, quite something if you figure that the camera only has three megapixels and a three times zoom. I know that the megapixels are a selling point for camera salespeople

Referendum gets narrow nod from councillors

Port Alberni residents are going to get to vote on a referendum about a Roger Creek crossing in this year’s election. City council voted 4-3 at their Feb. 11 meeting in favour of a nonbinding referendum. The referendum question will read: “Do you support a 10th Avenue bridge crossing over Roger Creek with funding of $12 million from borrowing resulting in tax increases to the average homeowner of approximately $130 per year for 25 years?” A report from city clerk Davina Hartwell noted that the $12 million cost for the bridge is approximate and actual costs could be higher. As well, there is no funding available from senior governments for the project. And others such as a new pool and waterfront industrial road are more of a priority than a bridge. Mayor John Douglas and councillors Cindy Solda and Dan Washington voted against the move. Douglas was blunt in his opposition. “We don’t need a bridge across Roger Creek at 10th Avenue,” he said. “It’s a great idea that’s really expensive that doesn’t warrant a referendum.” Without solid direction afterward the referendum is moot, Washington said. “Without a binding recommendation we don’t have a case.” The referendum would get people talking, Coun. Rob Cole said. Council also doesn’t have a crystal ball where grants are concerned and chance favours the prepared.
The numbers have been crunched and the Celebrity Hoops Basketball Game has doled out more than $13,000 to Valley community groups. Jericho Road Church youth pastor Harold Left Williams and Pastor John Cox handed out the proceeds to 10 groups last month. “We have to be a church that reaches out into the community,” Williams said. “These groups can make a contribution that will benefit others in a healthy way.” More than 18 organizations applied for assistance from the initiative, and a special board of directors sifted through applications and chose 10 of them. Port Alberni KidsSport received the largest contribution at $5,000. The organization helps pay sports registration

The department has seen cutbacks so the money would likely be used to help with team travel, athletic department head Mike Roberts said. Three organizations that operate food programs: the ADSS Breakfast Program, Eighth Avenue
Backpack Pro and Neighbourhood Link Read and Feed - received $550 each. The Alberni Valley Community School, Port Alberni Athletic Hall Association, army and navy cadets programs, and Port Alberni Special
Olympics program received $1,000 each. The Port Alberni RCMP DARE Program also received $1,000. DARE has a special significance for Williams. Williams grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, where opportunities for inner city youth were limited. The local DARE program made the difference between Williams pursuing a positive direction in life and being drawn into the morass of gangs, violence, drugs and crime. “I was a DARE kid. An officer who worked in the program didn’t want to see me get into trouble and kept me on the right track,” Williams said. “If it wasn’t for DARE— forget about it.” The celebrity hoops event actually raised more than $14,000 but $1,000 had to be taken out to pay for a backboard that was broken at the Athletic Hall before the game. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

John Paul II Catholic School this week joined with all Catholic schools in British Columbia to celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week. This is an annual event celebrating excellence in Catholic education. The theme this year was “walk humbly with our lord.” Each day of the week featured a special activity promoting faith, service, community, and fun. Like many of us these days even when we switch off the constant barrage of text and phone messages, our own internal noise pollution kicks in. “ Did I leave the kitchen light on when I left home?” “ Wonder what Susan meant when she said that to me?” Or that old reliable standby...”I SHOULD have said...” Given this behavior, our chances of really hearing the voice of God are just about nil. And yet, “the still small Voice is speaking: can you hear it?” So listen to the message that God whispers in your heart. All we need to develop a listening heart are two brief phrases in our prayers as we go about our daily tasks: “Thank you” and “What’s Next”. And God’s still, small voice WILL speak - and you will hear it.

Drive As hard as it might be to believe, this new, larger and slightly heavier (49kg) Rogue is actually more fuel-efficient than the last model. They were able to improve the economy by 18 per cent through the introduction of a new continuously variable transmission (CVT), aerodynamic tricks, and letting the carried-over engine breathe a bit better. Still rated at 170hp, the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine does a good job in city driving, thanks to the gearing of the new CVT but can seam a bit underpowered for higher, passing manouevre on the highway. Overall, the person filling the new Rogue up with fuel will welcome this balance of efficiency and everyday drivability. As part of the winter driving experience, I drove on an ice course in Macaglisse, Que., to highlight the vehicle’s stability system and the Active Trace Control feature. On the first run, through the twisty, sheer ice roads the entire system was shut off. As I crested a hill, then made a hard right turn, the Rogue slid all
the way out to the edges of the corner, almost hitting the opposing snow bank. On the second run, with the advanced systems on, the same road was almost uneventful. The stability and traction control kept the wheels from spinning but the Trace Control System provides just a slight amount of brake force to the inside wheels to help the Rogue navigate the sheet ice with confidence. Verdict The objective with this new Rogue was to be noticed and provide a level of refinement and creature comforts that the competition isn’t providing. The pricing is fantastic, especially the middle SV models. The larger interior dimensions will always be welcome, as buyers like to get more for their money, but it is still small and efficient enough for city buyers.

The digital road sign above warned: “Changing Roads Ahead. Do not rely solely on GPS.” I felt like it was speaking directly to me as I had suffered anxiety ever since Driveway editor Keith Morgan climbed into the Jeep Cherokee and we left downtown Detroit, heading north to Toronto. The tunnel to Canada was a stone’s throw away from our launch point. I was thinking it would route me the same way I got down to Motown, via Windsor and through the tunnel. Why the GPS didn’t? – I’m not sure. Clearly it knew something we didn’t. After the excitement of the 2014 North American International Auto Show, I was looking forward to the long and painfully boring drive back. (That’s before Keith hitched a ride, honest.) My wish was not yet coming true. Finally, we were on some sort of highway. But no signs to a border popped up for miles and miles. We even pulled over a couple of times in the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited to check our smartphones to see if we were heading in the right direction. Keith and I looked over at each other and laughed nervously. When you’re in these kinds of situations, you say things that you normally wouldn’t say. The one thing that remained steadfast and calm throughout the craziness was the Jeep Cherokee. The leather-trimmed seats were plush and comfortable to sit in for hours on end.

The quiet cabin allowed for wonderful conversations, whether it was with myself, with the GPS or with Keith. In addition, I managed to learn a lot from road signs. I will not wholeheartedly rely on the GPS and will not pick up hitchhikers in Michigan.

When I started veering off the straight and narrow – aka out of my lane – the lane departure warning would gently lead me back into place. And since it was frigid outside features like a remote starter, heated seats, a heated steering wheel and dual climate zone controls keep occupants toasty warm. Not to mention there was a generous amount of power being delivered from its 3.2L, Pentastar V6 engine, which is rated at 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. It’s then linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission. And with 4x4 capabilities, I was ready to brave the winter conditions, on bare roads or not. Did I doubt the GPS’s ability to lead? I sure did. Then again, it’s not out of my character to question authority. And yes, I was very happy to be in Ontario. But I’d be happier when I knew I was on a plane to Vancouver. Yet, I was thoroughly enjoying my time in

Alberni Valley wrestler Jordan Wagner can’t quite get the best of Dave Sharma in his final match, but he did win gold in his division, Saturday afternoon at the AV Multiplex.
Alberni shines at home meet The 31st Annual Alberni Invitational Wrestling Tournament is in the books and by all variables it was another outstanding event. Increased travel costs and shrinking school budgets reduced entries to fewer than 500, but the quality of competition was still high. Alberni wrestlers turned in some incredible performances. Local wrestlers captured 21 medals and placed 43 wrestlers in the top six placings of their weight classes. The ADSS Girls won the Juvenile division while the ADSS Boys minus the injured Nolan Badovinac were
third in Juvenile. Dunn won the School Girl division and were fourth in School Boys while Neill was third in girls and second in the boys. ADSS was shut out in the Cadet Division this year. Individually, six wrestlers took gold medals in their age and weight divisions. ADSS wrestlers Jordan Wagner and Remi Wells at 57 kg in Juvenile boys and Juvenile girls. Three local girls won School Girl gold with victories at 36 kg, 45 kg and 62 kg. Anna Frost of Dunn took the 36 kg school girl title while teammate Kylea Anderson was first at 62 kg. Neill’s Lily Timothy won the 45 kg weight. Seth Price of Neill took the
championship at 36 kg in the School Boy division. Five Alberni wrestlers captured silver medals at the Invitational. Two time BC champion Jesse Wagner lost a hard fought battle with fellow BC champion Oscar Bulaqui of North Vancouver in the Juvenile boys 54 kg final. Bulaqui is also a reigning National champion. Wagner’s teammate Michel Kurucz did the same in her 60 kg Juvenile girls final against Brandy Perry of Carson Graham. AW Neill school boy wrestlers Shane Leeper and Daniel Spencer took second place honours in their 49 kg and 59 kg weights respectively.

In the School Boy division bronze medals were claimed by Dunn wrestlers Isaac McDonald 41 kg, Jayden Iverson 56 kg, Aaron Badovinac 64 kg, Skyler Lynn 68 kg and Jayce Clayton 74 kg. he Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club has lifted off and started their competitive season. The club has three teams this year: 12U, 13U and 14U. The 14U team is coached by Lindsay Devine and Jay Dyer. The team shook the off-season rust off by competing in their first first games on Feb. 7 in Parksville. The girls played amazing and are off to an excellent start. The Airborne split their team into two teams as Parksville had two teams. The Airborne girls showed us that they really understood where to be both on offense and defense. The Airborne split the games with Parksville winning three sets and losing three sets. The scores for Airborne Team One: 25-17, 25-18, 14-25. The scores for Airborne Team Two: 25-15, 22-25, 11-25. The team showed

team and Julie Korver hustled hard, Devine said. The tournament was competitive, but off the floor players from both teams socialized and enjoyed each others company. Parksville was so welcoming that they even shared oranges and cupcakes with Airborne players at the end. The Airborne have
two goals that they strive to meet in every game: movement and communication. “The girls showed us both of these things on Friday. Jay and I were impressed,” Devine said. The team has a busy schedule ahead of it. They are competing with eighteen other teams in the Super Spike Tournament on Feb. 22-23 in Nanaimo.
The Airborne are also hosting a play day at the Athletic Hall on March 2. They are competing in a play day in Campbell River on April 5 before heading back to Nanaimo for the Island’s on April 12-13. The team has its sights set on the provincial’s in Abbotsford on April 25-27, and then to the nationals for the first time, again in Abbotsford, on May 8-11. “Normally, the nationals are too far away and with the 14U Nationals being in Abbotsford this year we really wanted to attend,” Devine said.

September 19, 1947 – January 25, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Verna, who passed away in Port Alberni at 66 years of age. Verna is survived by Allan Dake, her husband of 36 years, daughter Dionne Muller (Reg Lainson), grandchildren: Karley, Allyson, Sharon and Justin (Karl Muller, father of Karley and Allyson); sister: Sharon Murdock, brother Richard Breitung, nieces Tracy and Michelle, nephew Robbie 2nd mom to Janeen Garcia and Lisa Anderson “oma� to extended family Good friend to Kathy Anderosov and family and mother to beloved dogs Peanut and Paws. Oma had an open door to many kids growing up and touched many lives.
