Wolf Creek Community Church marks 10 years Local congregation continues to flourish in Lacombe

I

t is hard to believe that 10 years have gone by already.

This weekend, Wolf Creek Community Church will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

For some, like WCCC founder Ken Vanderwekken, it doesn’t seem like it has been that long.

Vanderwekken said the anniversary kind of “Snuck up” on him.

“What, 10 years went by already?” said Vanderwekken. “I kind of missed that.”

He said it was an incredible amount of work, particularly in the beginning years, to get Wolf Creek Community Church off the ground. It must have been worth it because while Vanderwekken said he knows there were bad times during those periods, he really only remembers the good ones.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” said Vanderwekken.

“A bunch of us were saying that this was the most exciting and yet the most difficult thing we had ever done. Looking back, I remember the excitement, I don’t exactly remember the difficulties.”

Pastor Leon Johnston said that the accomplishment of 10 years may be dwarfed by that of WCCC’s parent churches, but it is still significant.

“It does feel like we are kind of growing up,” said Johnston.

“We are still young and vibrant and active but we are also thinking, ‘Ok, how are we going to stay young, vibrant and active for the long term?’”

Johnston said that WCCC had decided to go for more of ‘family birthday party’ type feel to their 10th anniversary celebration.

To mark the milestone, Sunday’s regular worship service will focus on being thankful for what God has given, and look forward and press on to continue His mission.

Johnston said this is a fitting message for the anniversary because although Wolf Creek Community Church has been successful in its mission to reach out to the community, that goal is one that is never fully accomplished.

In addition to the worship service, a pancake birthday breakfast will be

held. Johnston said that there may be a few words said in recognition of the achievement, but the celebration is likely to be fairly informal.

When the idea first came about of forming a new Christian Reformed Church within Lacombe, the idea was to form a new church that would have community outreach at the forefront, said Vanderwekken.

It is quite common for CRC churches to birth new ones in the same area for different purposes and Vanderwekken said that the group of like-minded individuals who then formed the launch team for Wolf Creek Community

Church felt another was needed in Lacombe.

After forming the idea for the new church, the team then spent a few years brainstorming and planning for the new church.

Then, in February of 2004, Classis Alberta North of the Christian Reformed Church gave permission to form Wolf Creek Community Church.

The period that followed was a busy one for Vanderwekken and the other founding members of the church.

Vanderwekken said there were many things that needed to be organized such as finding the facility a pastor, and a name for the new church.

Wolf Creek Community Church was a name carefully chosen for the church.

Vanderwekken said that many CRC churches have the words Christian Reformed Church within in the title, but the founders decided not to include them because they wanted the new church to be a community church first while still being governed by CRC. The other half of the name, Wolf Creek, was chosen before anyone knew that the church’s facility would be located on Wolf Creek Dr. but Vanderwekken said it seems to be a very fitting moniker now that that is the case.

“It’s interesting how things develop.”

When the church was ready, Pastor Andy Geleynse became the first official pastor of the Wolf Creek Community Church.

After about two years, Geleynse and the church parted ways and the church was without an official pastor for a few years before bringing Johnston into the fold about three years ago.

Today, Wolf Creek Community Church is full every Sunday and is facing new challenges that come along with that growth. For example, Vanderwekken said that the church is starting to outgrow its current facility.

Mayor sees AUMA partnership as valuable

That way, when Christie needs to deal with these people as the mayor of Lacombe, those relationships already exist.

By the same token, those relationships also help to serve AUMA and work to better the larger communities of Central Alberta and the province as a whole.

AUMA members serve on a number of committees, both internal and external.

Some of those committees are provincial committees and Christie said that the AUMA has a very good relationship with the provincial government.

Information gathering and sharing is a big part of what AUMA does. Christie said that as AUMA represents so many of the municipalities within the province, and therefore such a high percentage of the population, it is easy for AUMA members to collect information and share it amongst themselves or relay it to higher levels of government.

Each year, the AUMA hosts a couple of events.

There is the annual conference, as well as a mayor’s caucus where mayors can network with commu-

Christie said this is why AUMA works, because all the members have the same mentality.

“You are going in united.”

Christie serves as vice president of cities up to 500,000 on the AUMA executive committee.

The board of directors is made up of 15 elected officials who are from across Alberta.

Two for each of the large cities, three for villages, three for towns, three for mid-sized cities, one for summer villages and a president.

“But we know that there is no ‘one size fits all solution’ for anything.”

Eighty per cent of the AUMA membership are from towns under the population of 5,000, said Christie.

He added that larger centres like Edmonton and Calgary represent the largest population base, but are only each one member in themselves.

Christie said this is something that board members need to keep in mind.

While something may work well for one municipality, it may not work at all for another and the goal of AUMA is to work to benefit all.

“Yes, it is a delicate balance.”

City to improve downtown intersection

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express This past Monday Lacombe City council was presented with two options to prevent motorist from making illegal left hand turns from 50 St. onto 50 Ave. (Hwy. 12).

“There is a bargain option or there is the Cadillac option,” said Director of Infrastructure Matthew Goudy. He added that because of the vast different in cost and functionality of the two options, both were being presented to council in order to gain input.

Left turns are not allowed from 50 St. onto 50 Ave. and there is signage present at the intersection to make drivers aware.

However, administration stated that not everyone complies and many drivers are observed making unsafe left hand turns at the intersection.

To correct this, council budgeted $27,500 for the capital cost of engineering and constructing a concrete barrier island that would prevent motorists from making the left hand

turn. This type of barrier is known as a ‘pork chop’.

Option 1, the ‘Cadillac option’, for the pork chop is to not only install the barrier but to improve the intersection by creating a bulb shape to both curbs on the north side of the intersection, thereby enlarging the curbs and sidewalk. Goudy said this option is advantageous because it aligns with the City’s Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP), the bulb effect decreases the distance taken to cross the streets and improves pedestrian visibility.

Goudy added that this option is significantly more expensive, will restrict semi-truck movement from Hwy. 12 onto 50 St. and will eliminate at least one parking stall on 50 Ave. Option 2 is to simply construct the pork chop barrier with no other modifications.

Goudy said this option is less desirable as it does not improve pedestrian safety and contravenes DARP guidelines and will still eliminate at least one parking stall.

Councillor Reuben Konnik said he liked Option 1 better, but expressed the importance of consulting downtown businesses when such issues affect them.

He said he had some concerns about sidewalk maintenance, like snow shoveling on the extended sidewalks and the amount of semi-truck traffic on 50 St. Goudy said that the reason the options were being presented to council before consulting downtown businesses was in order to have a firmer idea of the plans.

He added those businesses would be responsible for shoveling snow from the extended curb and that semi-truck traffic onto 50 St. is not overly common.

Mayor Steve Christie also supported the first option of the plan.

“I too prefer this better design and it almost would serve as a traffic calming measure as well.”

Councillor Grant Harder did not agree. He said that, to him, the diagrams indicated there would be a harsher impact on park-

ing than administration predicted. He also stressed the importance of finding the best possible solution for the intersection and he was not happy with either option.

“It’s a very important intersection, it is one of the most important intersections we have in the City,” said Harder. “I’m not sure that I like either one of the proposals.”

Councillor Wayne Armishaw argued that such measures may not even be necessary at the intersection.

“I’ve never really felt that was a dangerous intersection. I know that people make that left hand turn, I don’t observe many people doing it.”

However, council decided to adopt the recommended option at an additional cost of $82,750 with Armishaw and Harder voting against the motion. The additional funds outside the $27,500 capital budget item will be allocated from the Downtown Sidewalk Enhancement Budget.

Curbside recycling program gets set to roll

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe City council voted unanimously in favour this week of awarding the new residential blue box recycling program contract to CanPak for a term of ďŹ ve years.

During its four month public engagement campaign in the summer of 2013, the City found overwhelming support for the implementation of a curbside pickup recycling program and decided to implement such a program to begin on April 15.

Administration began its request for proposal (RFP) process on Jan. 8 and has now decided that CanPak will give the City the most value for its dollar, ofďŹ cials said.

While CanPak’s collection cost at $3.85 per month is higher than some of its competitors, it also offers no charge for additional blue boxes per month and has no processing fee, said Director of Infrastructure Matthew Goudy, therefore offering the best price overall. “That’s the key to this whole price comparison. They are going to handle as much material as we can give them with no processing fee.�

A local contractor, Recycling-4-You, also responded to the City’s RFP, but was eliminated as the contractor was unable to begin collection on the April 15 start date set by council. Administration also stated that Recycling-4-You was the highest of the four submissions received.

Council seemed generally in favour of administration’s recommendation to

award the contract to CanPak without much debate, but a few councillors voice minor concerns.

Councillor Grant Harder was displeased that the information provided to council did not include reviews of CanPak from other nearby municipalities and asked if any such conversations between municipalities took place.

Chris Huston, utilities manager for the City of Lacombe, said administration did speak to Blackfalds about whether they were satisďŹ ed with the work of CanPak and they heard nothing but positive reviews from them.

Councillor Reuben Konnik had questions about how residents were able to obtain additional bins as they are allowed to put out more than one. Goudy said the City will be distributing one bin per household and will have additional bins available for purchase.

He also said should bins need to be replaced, they will have to be purchased from the City.

Konnik also had concerns about the lack of ability to recycle plastic bags. Huston said that CanPak does not accept plastic bags for recycling as they cost more to recycle than to produce and that bins with plastic bags in them will likely not be collected.

However, Konnik said residents are likely to put plastic bags in bins anyway and he foresees this as a potential obstacle to the program’s success. Huston said the City hopes to combat that problem through a

public engagement campaign and visits to any households that consistently put out unacceptable materials for collection.

Lacombe’s ďŹ ve-year contract with CanPak is at a cost of $175,560. Goudy said that this is well within the City’s $294,188 budget for blue box recycling.

Goudy added he does not know why, but the amounts in the proposals received in

the 2014 RFP for blue box recycling were lower than those received in the 2013 RFP (whose amounts were used for budgeting).

Because of the difference between cost and budgeting, a budget adjustment will be made, said Goudy, but at this time he does not know how the excess budgeted money will be used. news@lacombeexpress.com

OPINION Spending control Lately, the Government of Alberta has received a lot of attention for releasing a list of employees and their earnings, known as a ‘sunshine list.’

First of all, kudos to Alison Redford and the province for releasing this list.

But some are criticizing Redford for compromising the privacy of the individuals named on the list and ‘humiliating’ them by making their earnings public.

But, the important thing is not the names on the list, but the dollar amounts attached to them. We deserve to see that dollar amount.

Strictly speaking, the Government of Alberta works for us, the taxpayers - Albertans. Therefore the government’s employees work for us too. Doesn’t that entitle us to know how they are being paid?

And therein lies the problem. Alberta’s sunshine list has revealed Government of Alberta employees are paid much higher salaries than their counterparts in other provinces and even then their counterparts in

the government of some other countries.

Looking at the government of British Columbia’s sunshine list, one will discover that its highest paid employee earned $307,730 in the 2011/2012 fiscal year.

That’s $39,033 less than the province’s highest paid employee who earned $346,763 last year.

Last week, the opposition released an infographic depicting Redford’s chief of staff earns $316,300 per year while President Barack Obama’s chief of staff earns $172,200. In fact, if you look at the Obama administration’s sunshine list type document, you will discover the highest paid employee on the report earns $225,000, and is the only employee to earn over $172,200.

Redford has defended these salaries saying she is happy that these individuals have chosen to work in the public sector as the government needs skilled employees. Yes Premier Redford, so are we. Our problem is not that they

are working for the government, our problem is how much they are being paid.

Redford has also stated it is necessary to fairly compensate these skilled employees that the government

has need of.

Premier Redford, we agree with you. However, when you are paying your employees significantly higher salaries than those in other provinces while

you are being criticized for ludicrously high travel expenses and running a deficit budget, it’s not unreasonable to say that those wages go above and beyond ‘fair’.

Like much of the Central Alberta region, Lacombe is experiencing growth pressures due to its strong residential, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors, and the resultant population growth is placing pressure on our municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure, which has reached capacity.

The City is collaborating with Lacombe County and the Town of Blackfalds to advocate for the north leg of the Central Alberta Regional Wastewater System (CARWWS) project. This project will see the construction of a 24km wastewater line that will tie into the Central Alberta Regional Wastewater Line, and will connect Lacombe, Lacombe County, and Blackfalds to the regional wastewater treatment facility in Red Deer.

This system was identified as a community need by Alberta Environment in 2005, and was recommended in provincially funded studies in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

In the interim, the City has been undertaking upgrades, whenever feasible, to extend the useful life and capacity of our wastewater treatment facilities. In recent

CHRISTIE years however, we have more than doubled the amount of aeration available for our lagoon system, and have installed costly curtain baffles to our treatment cells.

Unfortunately these measures, while successful in allowing continued operations, do not provide for a sustainable long-term solution to ensure public health or mitigate negative environmental impacts. Our partner municipalities are dealing with similar challenges, and we now face the prospect of completing upgrades to our wastewater treatment systems, with capital costs expected to rival those of regionalization.

Without a regional solution, we face costly upgrades to our wastewater facilities, simply to limp by.

This is not a prudent use of taxpayer dollars.

Moreover, provincial regulations will require that we implement a

mechanical waste treatment system when the City’s population reaches the 20,000 threshold, which is expected within 20 years.

The wastewater line will provide an economically sustainable and environmentally responsible means for long-term wastewater treatment in the growing region. We already have a successful partnership with Blackfalds and Lacombe County in the stable management and operation of a regional water line, which has a right-of-way that has been suitably sized for the inclusion of the proposed wastewater line. The City also has had experience in managing large provincially-funded infrastructure projects, such as the recent Hwy. 2A upgrades, in a financially responsible manner.

From an environmental perspective, the project would lower the risk of degradation and contamination by providing a higher level of wastewater treatment on an ongoing basis, and enable us to exceed the minimum provincial standards for treated effluent quality. It will also allow us to respond more easily to changes in standards, and

to capitalize on opportunities provided by new technologies.

We are seeking approvals from Alberta Transportation for a funding model that represents a 90/10 split, with the province providing 90% of the capital costs, and the municipalities contributing 10%.

Upon securing a commitment from the ministry, our efforts will focus on working with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development to obtain approvals.

Awaiting a scheduled meeting with Minister of Transportation Wayne Drysdale, I’m hopeful progress can be made on a funding commitment from the government, so we can move forward. To get an early start, we are looking into a phased-in approach, in an attempt to amortize the cost of construction over a five-10 year period.

As mayor, and as chair of the North Red Deer Waste Water Services Commission, I feel that it is vital that we be proactive and keep in front of our infrastructure needs in order to address growth, now and into the future.

The airplane cold - fact or ďŹ ction? “Did I catch this infection on the plane?â€?

I wondered. I’m sure, like me, you have often asked yourself this same question, particularly if you’ve landed in a tropical paradise and a cold is the last thing you need. So what is the risk of picking up a bug on a plane and how can you avoid it?

And should airlines add something to a certain door?

Dr. Jessica Nutik Zitter, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, studied 1,100 passengers travelling between San Francisco and Denver, Colorado, on planes that had newer air re-circulating systems and those that use fresh air for ventilation. Twenty-one per cent of passengers aboard fresh air planes reported colds within one week, compared to 19% of those breathing re-circulated air.

Dr. Derek Johnston, a specialist in pediatric allergy and immunology at Temple University in Philadelphia says, “It doesn’t matter if you’re breathing re-circulated air or fresh air. If the germs are there, you’re going to get sick and it’s due to conďŹ ned space.â€?

So what can you do to avoid being the one in ďŹ ve that wished they had stayed home in the safety of their bed? Dr. Charles Gerba at the University of Arizona is an expert on what the medical community labels ‘fomites’, namely objects that are liable to carry germs. He says the ďŹ rst thing to remember is that bugs are everywhere on the plane.

I always ask for an aisle seat as it’s easier to get up and walk around. But Gerber says that’s my ďŹ rst mistake, as it’s the seat most likely to be contaminated. Just watch people going to the bathroom and later touching every aisle seat as they steady themselves walking back to their seats.

Gerba relates the story of one ight. Passengers aficted with norovirus caused such a lineup at the bathroom the ight had to make an emergency landing. Later, a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control, showed that those sitting in

But there is a ground zero on every plane. The toilet. It warrants the analytical eye of a Sherlock Holmes. Next time you’re on a plane do your own count, but normally there’s one toilet for every 50 passengers, and on some ights one for 75.

Moreover, these toilets are used by hundreds of people daily. What awaits you are fecal bacteria, norovirus, seasonal u and the common cold.

Moreover, toilets in planes are small, making it even more difďŹ cult to perform routine hygienic measures. In fact, today with the epidemic of obesity it’s hard for some people to even squeeze through the door. Add to this small sinks which make it tedious to wash hands. Besides, Gerba cautions, even the sink may be contaminated.

Fecal bacteria can also contaminate your complimentary pillow and eating tray. In one study, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA), a deadly super-

bug, was found on 60% of airline trays. On a recent ight I noticed one couple cleaning their pull-down tray with Clorox wipes along with hand sanitizers.

You have to conclude that boarding a plane carries infection risks. But it’s not just the fault of airlines. Humans can be their own worst enemy by failing to wash hands after a bowel movement. In one study, medical students were stationed in a public washroom during a medical convention.

They reported that 50% of physicians left the washroom without even turning on the tap! And the convention was about infectious disease!

Here’s a suggestion for airlines to help eliminate the one in ďŹ ve of us who develop a cold. In all my travels I’ve yet to see a hand sanitizer outside the plane’s toilet door. Surely it would remind those who do not wash their hands to do so. It would also make my aisle seat much safer.

Prayer Breakfast features Ian Hill The 2014 Lacombe Leadership Prayer Breakfast is the third edition of the annual Leadership Prayer Breakfast (formerly known as the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast) to honour and pray for leaders in the City of Lacombe.

Father Lacombe School to celebrate life of namesake

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Father Lacombe Catholic School is looking to bring Father Albert Lacombe back to life.

In two separate events this month, the school and its student body will recognize the birthday of Father Albert Lacombe, for whom both the school and the City are named.

Principal Denis CĂ´tĂŠ said the school is doing something new this year and exploring the life of Father Lacombe through a historical and theatrical interview presentation by Rooney and Punyi Theatre Productions. “It just brings him to life,â€? said CĂ´tĂŠ.

Being relatively new to the school, this is the ďŹ rst time CĂ´tĂŠ is in charge of the celebrations for Father Albert Lacombe Day. He said it is important for the school to recognize Father Albert Lacombe Day and for students to understand its signiďŹ cance, but he didn’t want that recognition to be the same every year.

So, this year, CĂ´tĂŠ got in touch with the Father Lacombe Chapel in St. Albert and they directed him to Rooney and Punyi Education Theatre Productions who do a number of educational, theatrical interviews of historical characters. One such character is Father Albert Lacombe.

CĂ´tĂŠ said that Rooney and Punyi Theatre Productions also do theatrical interviews of William Shakespeare, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Leonardo Da Vinci as well as well-known ďŹ gures from Canada’s history such as Sir John A. MacDonald and Louis Riel.

He added that he was told Father Albert Lacombe is one of the company’s favourite interviews to perform.

On Feb. 19th, Father Lacombe Catholic school will be visited by Rooney and Punyi Theatre Productions and students will take a trip back in history.

It will almost be as if they were learning about Father Lacombe from the man himself.

Classes will take turns sitting in on the interview with Father Lacombe, which will be conducted by a teacher from each class.

An actor portraying Father Lacombe will answer questions from a script that allows the students to learn

about his life in an interesting format.

In addition to the theatrical interview on Feb 19th, students will have further opportunity to learn about Father Lacombe and the era he lived in through a visit from the Father Lacombe Chapel museum on the actual date of Father Albert Lacombe Day. CĂ´tĂŠ said that he wanted students to be able to expe-

rience the museum, but the logistics of organizing a school-wide ďŹ eld trip would prove too challenging.

Instead, museum ofďŹ cials will come to the school. He once again got in touch with Father Lacombe Chapel and asked them to do a road show and visit the school with some of the relics and artifacts.

Students will get to interact with artifacts and also

take part in activities to help them learn about MĂŠtis and First Nations cultures during the time Father Lacombe lived. Such activities include making paper tee pees, ďŹ nger-weaving, and river-lot activities.

CôtÊ said that Father Lacombe is a big part of not only the community’s heritage, but the school’s as well and it is important that students know who he was.

“It’s very important because that’s who we are, we are Father Lacombe Catholic School,â€? said CĂ´tĂŠ. “The kids need to know where the roots of the name of the school came from.â€?

Father Albert Lacombe was a Catholic priest who spent 60 years serving the Roman Catholic Church.

He was highly respected by both MĂŠtis and First Nations communities and

worked to settle the prairies as well as forge relationships between those two groups.

Father Lacombe died Dec. 12, 1916 and left his name to the Alberta community of Lacombe as well as several schools throughout the province. His legacy is celebrated on Father Albert Lacombe Day, his birthday, Feb. 28 (1827). news@lacombeexpress.com

A history of Lacombe’s water supply Water was a prime necessity for the developing community.

With no dependable brooks or creeks nearby, local householders relied on shallow hand-dug wells for water.

The water from these shallow wells was alkaline and not particularly palatable so many houses were constructed with cisterns to store rainwater.

The story is told of Jake Dolmage who lived beside the railway station.

He was the CPR land agent and he also acted as the self-appointed immigration agent for the community of Lacombe.

THE TEAKETTLES OF RESIDENTS AND THE BOILERS OF THE RAILROAD LOCOMOTIVES WERE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO THE CORROSIVE PROPERTIES OF LACOMBE WELL WATER. He would greet each newcomer as they disembarked from the train to determine whether they were interested in settling in the area or not.

If so, and if he liked the cut of their jib, he would offer to take them to the parcels of land still available for homesteading in the area.

If he did not approve of them he would offer them a drink from the well beside the station while casually mentioning that this was the best water to be found in the Lacombe area, but much superior water was very abundant further north.

Recipients of that advice usually re-boarded the train and continued their journey.

Because of its alkaline nature the water also did not produce ice of the desired quality for the Cummings’ skating rink.

To meet this challenge, Cummings equipped his rink with large storage tanks to hold rain water collected from the roof.

The teakettles of residents and the boilers of the railroad locomotives were particularly vulnerable to the corrosive properties of Lacombe well water.

Thus, in 1904 the newly fledged Lacombe Board of Trade with both the population and the railroad in

FREDEEN mind, commissioned the testing of water from Barnett and Jackfish (now Lacombe) lakes.

The CPR responded in late 1905 by constructing a pipeline from a pump house located at the southeast corner of Barnett Lake to a water tower which was located on the east side of the tracks just north of where the present tracks cross Hwy. 12.

The line, constructed of wood staves and laid in a hand-dug ditch, followed a south easterly course to enter the town near the present day intersection of 52nd St. and 56 Ave. The water tower was equipped with a float that rose or fell on the slender mast that crowned the tower.

This mast was visible from the lake so the pump operator at the lake always knew when to activate the pump.

The water tower, which was retired when steam power was replaced by diesel, has spent its declining years on a farm south of Clive.

Of course, water was an absolute necessity for fire control.

Prior to 1900 the primitive Burris pumper was charged with water carried in pails from the nearest private well or cistern.

An early use of this equipment, captured in a photograph by John Scales, shows the pumper with several firemen tending hoses amidst slush (obviously in below zero weather) within a few feet of the Halberg harness shop that stood on the corner now dominated by the entrance to the Flatiron building.

This shop was replaced in 1903 by the erection of the Merchant’s Bank.

After completion of the water line from Barnett Lake in 1906 the water source became the CPR water tower.

The town established its first volunteer fire brigade in 1907, but water to charge the pumper continued to be delivered by bucket brigade.

The first attempt to im-

prove the delivery system came in 1910 when Town council responded to a petition and commissioned the drilling of a well in a location central to the business district.

The site chosen for this public well was adjacent to the town office. Good water was found at a depth of 209½ ft.

A water storage tank was erected above the well and the area around its legs was

enclosed to serve as the dog pound.

Meanwhile the Blindman River dam had failed.

The Blindman River Electric Company folded in 1908 and the Town took over its assets.

The power source was then converted to steam by installing an auxiliary steam generator in Danners Peacemaker Flour Mill.

It was here that it served

double duty.

It would power the milling equipment during the day and, by the simple expedient of shifting the position of the drive belt, it would power the electrical generator during the evening hours.

In 1909, the Town let tenders to construct a brick building adjacent to the Town office to house two steam generators.

However, the system

experienced the same corrosion problems that had plagued the railroad locomotives a decade earlier.

Those problems were eventually mitigated by new technology and changes in the water source. In 1920 the Town sold equipment and advertised land for sale.

This steam plant continued to operate until Calgary Power took over the franchise in 1929.

What’s New Improved Residential Construction Standards Take Effect The City of Lacombe, like all municipalities, is required by law to enforce all safety code requirements handed down by the Province of Alberta.

Effective April 1, 2014, all new residential development within Lacombe will be subject to improved construction standards. Previous exemptions offered under Section 9.10.15.4.(1) of the Alberta Building Code will no longer apply. Depending on the side yard setbacks, the improvements may affect the type of construction material required for side walls and whether side windows will be permitted.

For a Discretionary Use that requires approval from the Municipal Planning Commission (MPC), and any permitted use that requires a variance greater than 10%, the complete application must be submitted by February 14, 2014, to be considered under the old requirements, assuming there is no appeal.

For a Permitted Use that requires a variance of less than 10%, the complete application must be received on or before March 3, 2014, to be considered under the old requirements, assuming there is no appeal.

For a Permitted Use that fully complies with the requirements of the Land Use Bylaw all complete applications received prior to March 13, 2014 will be considered under the old requirements. No guarantees for consideration under the old requirements are made for fully compliant, complete applications received between March 14 - 27, 2014.

ARTS & LEISURE Laurie Maetche happy to spread the gift of music

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It’s great to make a career doing something you love.

That is exactly what music instructor Laurie Maetche has done here in Lacombe.

She is the owner of Maetche Music Studios and teaches out of a small studio in the music department at Canadian University College. She said she is happy to share the gift of music and have a career doing something she enjoys so much.

Growing up in Lacombe, Maetche said it was “Just expected” that she and her siblings would play instruments when they were younger. So, she and her siblings all decided to take piano or violin lessons.

Maetche started with the piano, but soon moved to the violin. She continued to take lessons for several years but at 14 was considering discontinuing her studies.

However, her mother found a way to convince her to keep up playing the violin. Maetche said that, at the time, she was expected to practice a half hour every day and her mother had said she would find chores to fill that half hour if it was not spent learning to play the violin.

“I weighed the pros and cons and decided that playing the violin was much better than scrubbing the kitchen floor every Saturday morning,” said Maetche.

She first made the switch from student to teacher at 16 when a neighbour asked her for lessons.

After that, Maetche’s

She soon found she enjoyed teaching even more than performing. She added that teaching was one of the things that kept her playing violin ever since she started.

“That just kind of hooked me, when I was able to get into the teaching,” said Maetche.

Another thing that kept her interest in violin was paying in a youth choir.

She said she has taken this

lesson into her own teaching career and often tries to organize group lessons with students. “It’s making the friendships with other players that really helps.”

She added that sometimes, those students don’t progress as fast but that’s not always the point.

“They are having a good time with the music and that’s a big component of it.”

Now, Maetche has been playing the violin for about 40 years and teaching for about 30. While she enjoys

teaching the most, she still performs and actually has a recital coming up at Canadian University College on Feb. 23.

“THAT JUST KIND OF HOOKED ME, WHEN I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO THE TEACHING.” LAURIE MAETCHE Maetche said she enjoys teaching over performing because it takes some of the pressure off. A lot of

performers, including herself, put a lot pressure on themselves while performing, she said.

“If I’m going to step up there and play, I’m going to play to the best of my abilities,” said Maetche.

She added that while as an instructor she still needs to play to the best of her ability, the atmosphere is more relaxed and she is allowed to make mistakes from time to time.

“It’s good for (the students) to realize it’s ok to make mistakes and to keep

trying,” she said.

Maetche said that teaching full-time is a good way for her to pay the bills and still continue doing something she likes. She added that part of the reason her days are so full and she has so many students is that it is hard to turn potential students away when they are looking for lessons.

Lots of action in Red Deer College’s The Three Musketeers

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express From the first look at Ian Martens’ terrificallydesigned set for Red Deer College’s rendition of The Three Musketeers, it’s clear audiences are in for a unique theatrical experience.

All kinds of set pieces hang from the ceiling, meshing with the elaborately designed and extremely efficient stage arrangements – it speaks of a unique vision and serves as an inviting entry into Alexandre Dumas’ classic story that’s packed with strong performances and swashbuckling drama.

The production is currently running through to Feb. 15 on the Arts Centre mainstage, with curtain at 7:30 p.m. A weekend matinee is slated for Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. as well.

Director Thomas Usher, RDC theatre performance and creation instructor, has captured much of the ‘youthful exuberance, impulsive romance and constant action’ that forms the foundation of much of the

story. Scenes move along quickly – there’s rarely a quiet moment – and students are clearly committed to the project.

Particularly outstanding is the likable Tyler Johnson in the central role of D’Artagnan, who heads from rural France to the mysteries and irresistible allure of Paris to fulfill his dream of becoming a Musketeer. He brings along his gusty and irrepressible sister Sabine – Brittany Martyshuk – who is supposed to attend a Parisian school but has a raw drive to dive directly into the action that has swallowed up her brother as well once they hit the ‘City of Lights’.

Joining the Musketeers - Athos, Porthos, and Aramis – D’Artagnan races to defend the honour of the Queen of France against the evil, cunning Cardinal Richelieu, played with a kind of fierce, intimidating charm by Richard Leurer.

Rounding out the Musketeers themselves are Chase Cownden as Athos, Wayne Deatley as Aramis and Bret Jacobs as Porthos – each do

a terrific job in their singular roles and as a tightlyknit group of dedicated comrades.

Other performances that really stood out include Constance Isaac as ‘Constance’ – the sunny, sweet-natured girl that D’Artagnan finds himself in love with. On the other end of the spectrum, Megan Einarson is perfectly cast as the wicked Milady, working on behalf of the manipulative Cardinal.

Einarson isn’t afraid to really dig into her role and flesh it out – she isn’t just a cardboard villain either.

There is more to her story than is evident at first, and Einarson nails the complexities of her role superbly.

Usher has wisely emphasized lots of movement as the story moves along – plenty of sword fighting which the students handle solidly for the most part. The actors maneuver through a whopping 16 fight sequences in the production, having been deftly guided by Calgary-based Laryssa Yanchuk.

There were a few clunky,

slow spots early in the play’s run, but there is no question the pace and polish will grow as the run continues through to this weekend.

Ultimately, as Usher pointed out in an earlier interview, The Three Musketeers is propelled by the enthusiasm and energy of young men and women who are driven by their ideals and the belief that the just are rewarded and the evil are punished.

In some ways, the plot isn’t the most compelling to be sure. But the tale’s enduring popularity rests on those aforementioned universal elements. Not to mention the good old-fashioned adventure and fun that surfaces continually.

Everything in moderation If you have ever attended one of my cooking classes or cooking shows, you know that I am a big advocate for using fat in cooking.

I even take it one step further by joking that ‘My title is not doctor, dietician or nutritionist - my title is chef’.

But, I always take a moment from this overindulging of fat celebration to mention moderation.

Moderation is truly the key. Just because I may demonstrate an incredible tasting recipe loaded with fat grams and calories, this does not mean that I expect you to eat like that on a regular basis.

These types of recipes are meant to be illustrated as your ‘go to’ formula for a special occasion when you want to ‘wow’ someone with your cooking.

Having a background myself of having to deal with being overweight as a child and young adult, I know that it is not the preferred way to journey through life. Today, with a balanced diet and my best at a regular exercise routine, I have more energy and feel better than I ever did in my younger years.

The main difference, more than any time prior in my life, is that I now celebrate all foods, not just the fatty and calorie-laden ones. There is flavour to be found in all types of ingredients, recipes and cuisines, and to find greatness in your regular diet is to rejoice in variety and moderation.

The focus of moderation in this column has a couple of meanings: restriction and portion size.

Eating forbidden foods (everyone’s perspective of ‘forbidden’ is different so I will

leave it up to you to define this term) does not have to be done on a daily basis (restriction) or should be of a small amount (portion size).

Whether you practice restriction and/ or portion size will again depend on your lifestyle, beliefs and ultimately what works for you to lead a healthy way of life.

This being said, there is a huge variety of recipes that I share with the public, not just the fatty ones.

Most menus I teach at my classes and shows tend to have a balance about them unless there is an obvious general menu focus on a certain technique or specific ingredient.

My opinion on life is a bit biased as a chef, but I believe that food helps us to celebrate and enjoy our daily existence.

We need food to survive, so let’s make it exciting and something to look forward to everyday.

Having influence from a chef in your life will help you in many ways to prepare restaurant quality food right in your own home.

By cooking from scratch you have the ability to control ingredients, cooking technique and also save money.

Honing this skill in the kitchen you already have, and with the daily requirement that you need food to stay alive, will prove to be invaluable.

So, blow some dust off your cookbook collection, watch some cooking shows, or take a cooking class.

And consulting a doctor, dietician and/ or nutritionist may not be a bad idea either.

Although eating fat in food has no direct correlation to drinking red wine, I do feel compelled to state the following in my argument of moderation: “Many studies have suggested that drinking a single glass of red wine everyday is good for you, but skipping the whole week and having seven glasses on Friday night... not so good.”

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Kevin Martin was dethroned as Alberta’s provincial champion of the Boston Pizza Cup this past weekend after an unexpected comeback from Kevin Koe here in Lacombe.

“It feels great,” said Koe. Martin and Koe have met several times in the provincial final before, each time with Martin coming out as the victor more often than not. Koe said whenever the two Kevins meet it is bound to be a close game.

“It seems whenever we play Kevin it’s a close final,” said Koe. “To finally beat him, especially in the way we’ve done it this week, battling back all week and even in this game, it feels awesome.”

It looked like smooth sailing for Team Martin up until halfway through the game. After going undefeated on the path to the final, it looked like Martin would make short work of Koe as well.

Martin started with the hammer and scored two in the first end and followed that up with a steal of one in the second.

In the third, Koe finally made it onto the scoreboard with a score of one that was quickly answered

by Martin in the fourth.

It was the fifth end that turned things around.

Martin missed with his final rock and left Koe open with the hammer to score three rocks.

Koe said it was a lucky break for his team and a chance for him to turn his game around.

“I really struggled early in the

game, I didn’t help the guys much at all. We got lucky in five.”

Martin and his teammates were visibly agitated as they left the ice for the break, but returned to the ice for the sixth end looking just as composed as before.

Koe, who showed signs of obvious frustration in the first half, was also calm and looking just as cool and collected as Martin.

While neither team showed any outward signs of anxiety, the atmosphere in the arena was so tense you could cut it with a knife.

The remainder of the game was back and forth, with Martin scoring one in the sixth and Koe scoring two in the eighth.

Martin then blanked the ninth to keep the hammer and looked set to take the last end and the game.

But, on the very last stone of

the game, Martin’s rock came to rest too far from the button, leaving one of Koe’s stones counting for the steal and the win.

Koe’s path to the championship was not nearly as direct as Martin’s. Team Koe lost, won and lost its first three games to land in the C event of the tournament, then won it to secure a place in the final.

This makes Koe the first to ever win the provincial championship without first winning the A event.

“Obviously we got off to a rough start,” said Koe. “But we battled and we hung in there.”

Koe also commented on what it was like to play in Lacombe saying that the community did a great job hosting the event.

“It was great,” said Koe. “Provincials in the smaller centres are always good. There were lots of

people here all week, especially today (Feb. 8). It’s easy when it’s freezing out and the games are on TV to stay at home and watch but the arena was packed and everything about it was first class.”

Don Gullekson, chair of the Boston Pizza Cup committee, said he couldn’t have been happier with how the event ran overall.

“How much better can it get?” said Gullekson. He added that everything from the venue, to volunteer effort, to entertainment, to the curling was top notch.

“I can’t find one fault with the whole week,” said Gullekson. He added that the final match of the tournament, Kevin versus Kevin, was a ‘dream final’ for the organizers. “You couldn’t have asked for a better game.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Bentley Generals wrap up strong season The Central Alberta team heads to playoffs starting tomorrow

This past weekend the Bentley Generals won two consecutive games against the Stony Plain Eagles to finish the regular season on a high note.

While the victories mean nothing in terms of standings (the Generals had already clinched first place in league), they help to set the pace for the first round of playoffs between Bentley and Stony Plain beginning this coming weekend.

Now, the Generals are on a five game winning streak.

Coach Ryan Tobler said he is happy to see the Generals heating up again after a brief cold streak at the start of the new year.

“We had a rough stretch there after Christmas, but we got big wins when we needed them,” said Tobler, adding that he hopes the team can carry momentum from the wins into the playoffs against Stony Plain this weekend.

Heading into a playoff series against Stony Plain after two consecutive victorious games against the same team might seem like a good thing, but there are negatives to the situation as well.

Tobler said that playing the same team in so many consecutive games means there is a tendency for tension to be high and tempers to run hot.

Frustrations were already high in last Friday’s game in Bentley, with several scuffles breaking out in between play and players nearly breaking into a line brawl once or twice.

As the game ran later, the play got

goal of their own until Eagle Cole Gibson poked in the puck after it dribbled out from between the pads of Generals’ goalie Dennis Basset without him knowing.

Back on even footing, the teams battled back and forth for control of the puck for the remainder of the period. However, strong defense on both sides prevented either team from scoring.

In the third, the Generals were eager to pull ahead once again and fought hard to gain the upper hand over the Eagles, scoring two goals within four minutes of each other to once again command the lead.

For the remainder of the game, the Gen-

erals continued to aggressively pressure the Eagles’ defense and control the play.

The next night in Stony Plain, the Generals managed to do the same, establishing a lead early in the game with two goals in the first period and maintaining the lead throughout the game to end it 6-3 in their favour.

Bentley next faces off against the Stony Plain Eagles in playoffs to begin at 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Bentley Arena.

The Generals will then play at Stony Plain at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. in Red Deer. news@lacombeexpress.com

Choosing the perfect colour for your home When considering design most people are concerned about colour.

Colour is vital in creating a design theme. The problem most people have is simple yet all consuming what colour do I pick? Many people I meet with are stressed over what colour to pick and are often surprised when they realize how easy it actually is to pick a fantastic colour for their home.

When you are choosing colours for your home it is important to gather information regarding your design. It is rare that people start from ground zero when designing and you will find that you have more design elements than you realize. Many items currently in your home and life will give you clues as to what colours you should choose. Artwork, deco-

Go take a peek at your favourite purses, is there a predominant colour in your closet? These are clues, hints you uncover as you discover your colour passion.

Once you have found your inspiration piece, that item that has moved with you from home to home, you can start working with it to introduce colour into your home. For me it is an origi-

nal piece of art I have had for more than 15 years. This lovely piece was hanging in a coffee shop in my hometown and it literally took my breath away. It sports brilliant yellows and reds with dashes of black and gold. I love the subject matter, the colours and have a deep respect and fond memories of the artist who created this wonderful piece. This canvas has hung in many homes, always in different areas with different design plans but it is always with me and it is a useful piece of inspiration.

One client brought an eye shadow palette into our consultation, what a wonderful starting point! She saw these gorgeous colours and they spoke to her even though she was unsure

about how it would be used in her design plan. We ended up creating a warm interior with coastal colours splashed on her walls complete with iridescent cream accent pieces – all from a few eye shadow colours!

Colours and themes can be created from almost anything that gives you inspiration and joy.

My daughters recent trip to B.C. allowed her to take some wonderful photos in a winery, when she posted them on facebook I immediately knew that they would be the muse for my new basement development. The wine barrels were beautiful and rustic and they were banded with a deep orange colour that has always been a favourite. As soon as I had paint on my walls

I had them enlarged and developed on canvas and I absolutely love looking at them. Throughout the construction and design of my basement these photos were kept in the forefront as I chose flooring, paint and furniture – the perfect inspiration!

Before you become overwhelmed with the bigger picture of a finished project, pare down your vision and search for that one small piece of inspiration as you start your design project. Carry that item with you if possible and keep it at the top of your mind, you will be pleasantly surprised at the treasures you find by accident!
