CMP are investigating the cause of a collision at the Mays Road and Trans Canada Highway intersection Tuesday that saw two passengers taken to hopsital by air ambulance.

“A single vehicle was heading southbound on the (TCH), and according to witnesses it appeared to veer off to the right,” North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Jon Stuart said in a media release.

The crash involving a Toyota Sedan occured at 11 a.m.

“The vehicle drove head-on into a traffic standard at Mays Road,” Stuart said. “The vehicle was severely damaged as a result of the impact.”

An off-duty paramedic who happened to be on scene rendered help prior to the arrival of other emergency crews.

The North Cowichan, South End fire crew attended, assisting in setting up a landing location for the helicopter.

The two occupants, a male driver and female passenger, were travelling from Campbell River.

The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Highway traffic wasn’t stalled due to the incident, and flowed normally in both directions.

Solar panel swiped from slippery conditions warning sign on Chemainus Road

Cops are looking to nab whoever swiped a solar panel from a sign warning drivers of slippery conditions before crossing Chemainus River Bridge.

The two by two-and-a-half feet panel valued at $400 was attached to a portable traffic digital sign board on Chemainus Road at Ashcroft Road.

It went missing between Jan. 24 to 28.

“Thefts like this cost the taxpayers money so local Mounties would like to return the solar panel to the Municipality,” stated North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday in a media release.

Anyone with information should call the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment at 250-

748-5522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

ost Canucks land in laid-back Huatulco, Mexico carrying bathing suits, shorts, sunscreen and sandals.

Terry Welch and wife Anne lug wheelchairs, revamped laptops, school supplies and medical goods for needy people who’ve become friends in and around the lovely Oaxacan town of La Cucecitia.

The Cowichan Samaritans make about four annual pilgrimages to the coastal region, parking personal stuff for items needed by Mexicans living far under the Canadian poverty line: labourers, maids, waitresses, taxi drivers, clerks and students.

“We bring whatever we can get into our suitcases,” said Terry, owner of Duncan’s Terry’s TV Electronic Service.

The couple has had plenty of practice.

“We first started going down in 1999 by accident when they had the Y2K (scare), and lots of people cancelled their trips. They had a seat sale; the agent couldn’t even pronounce Huatulco,” he said. “I fell in love with the people, the climate; you can’t beat it.”

It didn’t take long for the Liverpudlean to realize he and Anne could help struggling Mexicanos.

“They’re ingenious people down there; you give them a wheel, and they can make a car out of it.”

The Welches are repaid in smiles from grateful folks, some of whom have become like family.

“Some people down there have nothing, and they’re grateful to take anything they can get,” Welch said, proud of his generosity. “It’s a good, warm feeling, and good memories that last a lot longer than going to the best beach or restaurant in Mexico.”

This year, daughters Julie and Jacqueline are joining with their parents to experience the goodwill they’ve lovingly groomed by bringing wheelchairs, mobility aids, clothing, and even

bandages.

“We’re allowed 50 pounds, and carry-ons of 40 pounds. We try and avoid paper stuff because it’s so heavy; pens, kids’ toys that are small and lightweight — some people need baby monitors.”

Stale-dated medical supplies – but not drugs — from Island Health are also ferried south.

Some wheelchairs are donated by the Duncan Lions, and Cowichan Independent Living.

“My customers also come to me with things to take down — it’s a great experience.”

Part of the experience involves Gabrielle Sinobas of Mexico’s DIF welfare department.

“I give her the weight and dimensions, and they get in touch with the airlines that take it to Huatulco,” Welch said of some items.

Welch’s electrical smarts, and connections, don’t hurt when overhauling high-tech gear such as donated laptops.

“I’ve got a friend in the computer business who gives me free labour.”

He and Anne have also amassed boxes of Barbie dolls, and Barbie clothes made by Duncanite Josie South. Some of the cargo heads to various schools. Mexicans aren’t taxed on stuff the Welches bring in.

“We drop Canadian pins from the federal government,” he said. “The kids just love them.”

Children also enjoy when the couple screens popular wrestling movies.

“I play them on a projector on the side of a

building, and I buy the kids Sabritas chips.”

Their benevolence is honoured by local families.

“You’re downtown and people talk to you, and you recognize their kids — people come up and talked to us in grocery stores,” he said, citing rural poverty. “In the hills, some people live in cardboard boxes; it isn’t like Canada.”

He just gets karmic kicks from helping — while watching his bulging baggage.

“Right now, we’re about full up, but we’re always planning the next trip.”

ohn Sandys-Wunsch fondly remembers swimming and fishing for trout in Quamichan Lake.

Nostalgia perhaps propelled the senior Rhodes Scholar and Anglican priest to buy the lake’s tiny Rainbow Island back in 1975.

Now the Victorian is selling 3.2-acre Rainbow for $35,900, hoping it forms the centrepiece of a local drive to keep the algae-laced lake alive.

“The idea is for making the island and the water better,” said the Cowichan secondary grad, reluctant to tell any new owner what to do with their property.

Rainbow Island isn’t exactly the definition of a residential opportunity. Even if it sells (a deal for $75,000 recently collapsed), others familiar with Rainbow indicated it should best remain a home to eagles, herons and other waterfowl.

“This acreage is accessible only by boat, and is the only island on this lake,” realtor Cathy Green’s ad reads. “This one-of-akind property does have options, but it would be best suited to someone who appreciates and wants the privilege of preserving a wildlife habitat.”

Good luck getting zoning to build anything on the spec. A

North Cowichan planning staffer said Rainbow currently has no zoning, describing it as “definitely an eco-sensitive area.”

Building on the island would require a development permit, with the zone determined upon approved land use.

“It’s a real oddity,” said Roger Hart of the Quamichan Watershed Stewardship Society. “I’d like it given to the Cowichan Valley Land Trust or the society.”

That gifting would allow the owner a tax deduction and a chance to protect Rainbow with a perpetual preservation covenant. Hart was also hapless to describe how building could even happen on Rainbow. ‘’I don’t know how they’d get water or power over there. The ground’s not particularly solid, and you’d require pilings.”

Forget privacy, too.

“It’s in the middle of the lake, in full view of everyone. He’d be lucky to get $35,000 for it.”

Mayor Jon Lefebure said he was unaware of any plans or discussions about the island he also hoped is preserved.

“It’s hard to imagine a use that makes sense there. The most logical to me is as a preserve for the environment,” he said noting any buyer would “be facing some pretty huge (development) hurdles.”

“Maybe that’s why the previous sale fell through.”

Asked if municipal taxpayers should buy Rainbow, Lefebure said council’s had no debate on that yet.

“There are lots of environmentally sensitive pieces of property around the valley.”

Anyway, Rainbow’s geography is tantamount to preservation now.

Rainbow Island — the little island in the southeast corner of Quamichan Lake — is a haven for birdlife.

“Because it’s an environmentally sensitive area, there are restrictions on what can be done under North Cowichan’s bylaws.

There are riparian considerations, so someone can’t just come in and clear the island.”

Sandys-Wunsch wasn’t happy with the lake’s foul condition.

“Oh boy, is there ever pollution in there,” he said of sewage and toxins in runoff from surrounding roads and properties.

Still, Green was optimistic a nature-lover will buy Rainbow and set it aside.

“The right buyer is what’s important,” she said, noting Sandys-Wunsch aimed to use sale proceeds to help university students.

$925,000 offer to purchase 38.8 acres of private land, off Maple Bay’s Stoney Hill Road, as regional parkland has been accepted, the News Leader Pictorial has learned.

Brian Farquhar, regional parks and trails manager, confirmed Friday taxpayers’ offer to landowner Paul Bourke had been accepted.

“It’s a done deal,” Farquhar said.

The price for Bourke’s land on Maple Bay Peninsula saw North Cowichan pay $200,000 from its parks acquisition fund, staff said. The balance came from the CVRD’s respective parkland acquisition fund, Farquhar explained.

CVRD chairman Rob Hutchins said it is the desire of the Bourke family of Victoria to see their property combined with the regional district’s existing 128acre Sansum Point property into what the CVRD is referring to as Stoney Hill Regional Park.

“This land acquisition provides a key extension to the protection of the bluffs above Sansum Narrows, preserving dramatic viewscapes and a place of special significance to many within the Cowichan Valley,” Hutchins said in a press release.

Did controversy help park jump the queue?

Sansum Point: Expansion purchase raises questions

ansum Point Park is a jewel well-worth protecting.

Our voices were among the many celebrating when its 128 acres was added to our collection of local protected areas a few years ago.

We aren’t quite so sure about the nearly 40 acres that are going to be added to the park thanks to a deal closed last week between the Cowichan Valley Regional District and the Bourke family of Victoria.

It’s not about the property in isolation; the new property will unquestionably be an asset to the park and to the community.

For those late to the debate, the Bourke property was tied to the Stoney Hill Road proposal that would improve access to the isolated properties of the Maple Bay Peninsula. The road was central to a settlement agreement reached between Bourke and the municipality.

With the road in limbo thanks to a series of studies and debate over the correct route, North Cowichan was operating under the potential threat of renewed legal action from Bourke.

This purchase should certainly put that question to rest.

But did the Stoney Hill Road situation cause the CVRD to act on this property when it may have been more fair from a regional parks perspective to spend that money on another property first?

The CVRD will tell you that in situations like these, you have to act when land comes available.

That’s true, but we’re not sure if it matters to taxpayers in the north, south, and west, who see an existing park expanded while similar ideas in their areas remain in the queue.

Obviously the overflow was not convenient for anyone involved, but it was good to see both the effort and the interest.

And maybe a big chunk of their day was spent visiting grocery stores to stock up for this week’s meals.

Let’s hope most were able to catch up on the first round of possible scenarios, and skip all of the latter.

But let’s be honest, a lot of people probably didn’t have the choice.

Many grumbled on Facebook about having to work, being either self-employed or a federal employee.

Some said they weren’t doing anything special, or out of the ordinary and were simply happy just to sleep in.

A lot of people had lazy days at home watching the Olympics, while some others boasted Bout lying on the beach in Cancun.

This weekend, the NDP marked the Family Day holiday with a media release about the B.C. government.

The release noted that Family Day marked the 200th consecutive day since Christy Clark and her caucus had convened the legislature for the purpose of running our province.

It’s time to get to work.

Because frankly, part of being a family includes doing things like finally getting around to folding that heaping pile of laundry and putting bread on the table both literally and figuratively.

The groceries aren’t going to buy themselves and maybe you needed to finish that painting project for the new nursery in your house.

It was pretty clear some people bought into the spirit of organized activities.

Attendance was high at attractions like Sidney’s Lego Weekend while many took advantage of the free admission to the Royal B.C. Museum.

In Cowichan, people commented and warned others of line-ups out the door at the

Cowichan Aquatic Centre for the free family swim. North Cowichan staffers reported 700 visitors took a dip.

And another 200 courageous souls braved the weather for Downtown Duncan’s first ever community event in the city core.

But for me Family Day was a little this and that, morning snuggles, building Lego trains, some fun in the snow before the rain melted it, and a visit with some family.

But it was also about finding the time for a little bit of catch-up duties — laundry, cooking, lunches, emails and writing this column — in between.

Apartment fire victim shares thanks for the response

Dear editor I would like to thank the Duncan Fire Department for all its great work and the help firefighters gave to all the people that live in the Dobson apartments. To the fireman that rescued my small cat and my fat cat. To those who got me some of my clothes and phone and a few more things for me that were not on my list. Thanks to Leanne for helping him. You are both great!

To John Elzinga and all his staff and all the volunteers at the Island Saving Centre who gave their time to help out, you are all wonderful in this very stressful and upsetting time. I’m very grateful to each and every one for the help. I feel so sad for my neighbours that lost everything. I’m more fortunate that I only have smoke damage but I will be homeless for awhile.

And thanks to the Prevost Vet Clinic for their generous donations of cat and dog food, Walmart Canada and Lions and Salvation Army. Thanks to all of you.

enry Drummond Herd was born in 1869 in Scoonieburn, Perthshire, Scotland, the youngest child of Thomas Herd and Isabella Drummond.

Henry went off to Central Africa where he served as a missionary for 10 years. During this time he and Elizabeth Brown-Gordon married in 1895 in Durban, South Africa.

By 1901, the couple was back in Scotland and Henry had returned to being an elementary school teacher.

In December 1911 he sailed from Glasgow to Canada aboard the SS Athenia. Likely Henry was coming to check out job possibilities in Canada. “As you can imagine, a huge amount of staff and volunteer resources go into such an event and at times it has made it difficult to effectively run our programs. The natural appeal of Ancient Futures Sustainable clothing: wool designer about low-impact fashion

li Bertin is a local fashion designer who creates colourful, covetable, and comfortable merino wool clothing for her own label, Ancient Futures.

As a mostly self-taught designer, Bertin is supplying local families with a sustainable and stylish way to dress. This month we chatted with the busy mother of three on why sustainable clothing is important and on dying merino wool in the back woods of Glenora.

What is your business and what inspired you to start making sustainable clothing?

‘Ancient Futures Clothing’ is a unique clothing line that specializes in hand dyed merino wool fabrics, washable jerseys and interlock, and thick boiled wool.

I strive to do my best to live a sustainable life from the food I eat to the clothing I wear. It only made sense to me to work with fabrics that were having low impact on the planet.

What kind of training do you have?

Mostly I am self-taught. I started sewing clothes for my teddy bears at age

nine. My mom taught me some basic skills and I spent some time as a teenager using industrial sewing machines and modeling gothic clothing (no, you can’t see the photos!). I also worked for a company sewing teddy bear clothes.

Nine years, ago after having my first child, I discovered merino wool and started making clothing for my family with a lot of trial and error. Friends and family asked me to start sewing for them and now I just can’t seem to get enough — it is “sew” much fun!

What kinds of materials do you use and where do you make your products?

Hand-dyed merino wool is my favourite fabric to work with. Each piece is cut into threeto four-yard lengths and then handdyed in almost boiling hot water outside in the forest on a propane boiler. From there it gets hung out on the clothesline and then each piece goes through the longest, hottest washing cycle and dryer to preshrink all the fabric. It is then folded neatly and waits patiently for a magic moment of inspiration to wash over me. All of my one- of-a-kind designs are made in my studio on our land in Glenora. I also work with bamboo, organic cotton, hemp and lace. more on page 14

What are some of your favourite designs and styles right now?

The cross top is my newest and most favourite long sleeve shirt, and the circle vests are an excellent addition to any outfit. The pocket skirt is also great to throw over any pair of pants to keep your cushion warm on these winter days.

When looking for new ideas, what do you do?

I love to draw and play with lines and textures. Often it is my fabric and the richly saturated colours that guide me in the moment while designing.

What do you feel are the benefits of locally made, sustainable clothing?

Locally made clothing is a gift to our planet.

No watersheds are being affected by the harsh dyes as I dye my wool until the water runs clear. I also spend hours sorting my scraps to create headbands, wrist warmers and quilts so there is as little by-product as possible. The wonderful thing is that I can compost most of my by product as wool breaks down really fast into the soil.

Who are your customers mostly?

Blessed be the Cowichan Valley and all those who support my business. Certainly the Waldorf School families have been great supporters as well as friends, family, the Community Farm Store staff and many more.

I make clothing for women, men and children and do lots of custom orders.

Where are your products sold?

You can find Ancient Futures clothing at Spinning Ninny in Cowichan Bay and The Community Farm Store in downtown Duncan. My studio boutique is open on Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from now until the end of March, and also features Hilary Else’s clothing. We are both busy mothers of three and we buy our fabric and dyes together to support one another.

What is the price range?

My prices range from $5 headbands, to women’s long-sleeve shirts at $60, and skirts from $35 to $85 depending on length and style. Men’s hoodies are $120 and long sleeve tops are $75 Childrens clothing ranges from $20 to $45 and pants are around $80.

There is always a sweet little clearance rack in the boutique with good finds on it too!

we live in paradise,’’ said the 26-year resident of Mill Bay. A neighbour quickly latched onto Wallace when he first arrived here.

“Practically the day I moved into the house I got enticed into volunteering in the community,’’ he laughed.

Wallace became a director of the Mill Bay Community League and that was just the beginning of his community service. His main claim to fame has been with the South Cowichan Community Policing Advisory Society and the Speed Watch program that prompted his nomination from former Shawnigan Lake RCMP Sgt. Rob Webb.

Wallace joined Speed Watch in 1988 and became chair in 1999, a position he continues to hold after 14 years while amassing 2,385 Speed Watch hours during his tenure.

“Without Bob and his crew helping keep speeds low and crashes to a minimum, we would certainly see an increase in collisions and upset citizens,’’ wrote Webb in his nomination description.

“He is extremely deserving for his continued dedication to this worthwhile program. Bob Wallace is the chair, the treasurer, the secretary, the trainer, the leader, he is Mr. Everything. Bob is Speed Watch. He greatly enhances all our communities’ safety.’’

The people making the selections for the award obviously agreed and he received his reward during the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Awards ceremony at the Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre.

“I did not expect it at all,’’ said Wallace, who enjoyed conversing with Attorney General Suzanne Anton at the ceremony.

“She said, ‘I’m from the valley, you know,’’’ Wallace related. “She said, ‘I used to go to Mill Bay and play tennis.’ I said, ‘you’re welcome anytime.’’’

The Great Plains — Saskia and Darrel — were in Chemainus for a concert with Gary Fjellgaard two years ago. This weekend, they’re back for a Valentine’s concert Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Chemainus Seniors Drop In Centre.

“Get ready to enjoy a heart-warming evening of music, merriment, and mayhem, as Saskia and Darrel deliver a wonderful blend of folk music, an unpredictable series of songs that change every night,” states a press release.

Author finds a Well of inspiration in politics

Norm Hamilton: Lake Cowichan writer explores water rights and corporate agendas in his debut novel Ashley Degraaf

orm Hamilton’s political, environmental thriller is very timely for people currently living in the Yukon.

But the former Yukon (now Lake Cowichan) resident’s first novel is also quite fitting for folks calling the Warm Land home.

From Thine Own Well draws the reader into a dystopian society set in 2036 where, in Canada’s far north, unrestricted fracking and irresponsible mining practices have caused major watersheds and underground streams to become contaminated.

“I’m quite active in environmental issues,” the 62-year-old new-to-Lake Cowichan writer said. “And I’m interested in the politics of things. There are some concerns and some issues that have been plaguing me for years.”

The retired regulations officer pays close attention to government plans, particularly deals like the October 2012 FIPA agreement, which is a focal point in the grab bag novel that includes relationships, action, and humour as well as a thought-provoking story line.

Hamilton has lived in Lake Cowichan for only a year and has already seen water supply issues come up, noting a meeting he attended on the Cowichan River weir control debacle.

“We often tend to take for granted our pristine water sources,” he said. “And we need to push citizens to hold our politicians accountable.

“A society that doesn’t have potable water, and that cannot feed itself, is doomed to be beholden to, and controlled by, whomever it is that provides these necessities,” he wrote in a media release.

Born and raised in Prince George, Hamilton has a varied background including work as a corrections officer, columnist, owner of a pet shop, and his own photography studio.

The retiree has written many feature articles, mostly on photography, published a photographer’s beginner book The Digital Eye, and has helped friends publish their pieces along the way.

Norm Hamilton has drawn inspiration from the far north for his debut novel, From Thine Own Well.

Writing his own fiction novel’s been on his bucket list for quite some time.

And when National Novel Writing Month in November came up, it gave him just the boost he needed.

“I just sat down and began writing,” he said. “The characters and story, they just started developing. They kind of wrote themselves.”

And after much re-reading, re-writing, as well as hiring a professional editor, From Thine Own was polished off, complete with a cover designed with the help of his graphic designer son.

“In my mind and what I’ve been told is it’s very human,” he said.

From Thine Own Well reaches out to not just environmentalists but to anyone who appreciates a good page-turner.

Cara Luft makes time for Duncan show John McKinley

ara Luft has been more than busy.

Between working on songs for a new album and representing Canada in a unique music partnership project with England, one would think her schedule is pretty much booked.

But that hasn’t stopped the former Wailin’ Jenny from an early 2014 tour across Western Canada, including a Duncan stop this weekend.

“A lot of the new material and song ideas are around the theme of home.

Cara Luft is here Thursday.

I’ve been without a home since Christmas 2012 and it’s something I long for.

It’s interesting to see how that desire has crept into my ideas for songs,” Luft said in a media release.

Her promotional material describes her as follows: “Reviewers of Cara’s live shows talk about her superb musicianship, her humourous anecdotes, her ability to switch between styles, her accomplished songwriting, and the charm of her stage presence.’’

Luft will be in Duncan on Feb. 13 at The Orca Ballroom in the Travelodge Silverbridge Inn. Tickets are $15 advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

LAVALLEE, Frank It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Frank Lavallee on February 2, 2014.

He went peacefully in his sleep.

Although we have slowly lost him over the past few years, we will miss his smile and gentleness.

Frank leaves behind his wife Linda, his brother Ted (Flo), his daughters Francine (Michael) Nicole, and his only granddaughter Devon.

Frank was born September 28, 1934, in Iroquois Falls, Ontario and moved to the Island with his family in 1973. Frank worked at Crofton Pulp mill until he retired at 61. He loved spending time around home tending to his pristine garden, and being with friends and family. A small family service will be held at a later date. We would like to thank the staff of the 2nd floor south at the lodge on fourth for their care and compassion. Flowers respectfully declined.

Mom was always known as “Tim� and when asked how she came by the nickname her response was that “As a baby I was rather plump and was called “Timothy Tight Britches� after a character in an English children’s book by her family, as her clothes always seemed a bit snug. It was soon shortened to Tim and the name stayed with her. I don’t think anyone who knew mom could ever imagine her as being plump.

Born in Wembley, England. Mom worked for Lloyds Bank during the war and came to Canada shortly after in 1946, spending a year in Saskatchewan before settling in Duncan in 1947 where she worked at the Commerce bank downtown, rising from ledger keeper to 1st teller. She enjoyed telling the story of how she would take the day’s receipts to the Post Office and the bank manager would give her a gun to carry just in case of trouble.

Mom and dad were married in 1950 and after their 2 children were born she began work at King Daughter’s hospital and then the CDH in housekeeping until her retirement in 1986.

Mom was always busy with some activity. Her calendar rarely had a free day written on it, and if there wasn’t she would soon find something to pencil in. We often needed to book an appointment weeks in advance if we wanted to visit. Unless of course she wanted something done and that would mean immediately. Mom expected things to be done prompt and whenever you did visit there was always a list of odd jobs that couldn’t wait.

Mom attended church at St. John’s where she was a member of the ACW, helping with pastoral care, church cleaning, rummage sales and wherever she could be helpful.

She enjoyed being outdoors and could often be seen walking whenever possible to her various appointments around town, even if the weather was a bit off. Her ’93 Sprint had only 75,000 km. after 18 yrs. Gardening was her favorite pastime and she was very proud of her yard and flowers, especially her roses.

Other activities over the years included acting or helping with props with the January Players, helping at the hospital gift shop with the ladies Auxillary & playing whist at the Senior’s Center.

Age and health slowed Mom down in her last few years so that she didn’t go out much, but she was determined to stay in her little house as long as possible, which she did until a few months ago when she moved into Wedgewood House.

A very special thanks to those ladies who took the time to stop by each day, do puzzle with her and have a cup of tea and a cookie.

Your friendship meant the world to her.

FILION, Margaret Roxborough (nee Truesdale) Passed away peacefully in 2014 at Cowichan District Hospital. Margaret was born in 1921 at King’s Daughters Hospital (now Cairnsmore Place), Duncan. She attended Duncan Elementary School and Duncan High School. After graduation, she attended Sprott-Shaw College in Victoria. In December of 1941, she met Donald Filion, a soldier in the North Shore Regiment based in New Brunswick whose unit was based temporarily in Victoria. They were married in May 1942. Don was killed on September 17, 1944 in France. During the war years and after, Margaret worked as a legal secretary to various lawyers in Duncan. In later years, she assisted David Williams in preparing his manuscripts for the publication of his books.

Margaret was predeceased by her brother Lewis and her sister Nairn (Callewaert). Surviving family members are sisters Doreen (Wilkinson) and Glenys (Lister). A Graveside service will be on Friday February 21, 2014 at 1:30 pm in Mountain View Cemetery (Somenos and Drinkwater Roads), Duncan, Rev. Michael Wimmer officiating. Memorial Tea to follow at Duncan Meadows Golf Course (6507 North Rd.). He is survived by his wife Sheila; daughters Heather Morris (John Middleton) and Sally Arkell (Brad), son Michael (Tasha); grandchildren Jason Arkell (Brandie), Allan Arkell (Kallah), Meagan Richardson (Trevor), Stephanie Austin (Matt), Samantha, Adam and Beckie Morris, Jose, Bradley, and Isaiah Arkell, and Kieran and Aiden Wyper; great grandchildren Mackenzie, Jesslyn, Josh, Emma, Levi and Braxton Arkell, Malachi and Abigail Richardson, and Judah and Micah Austin. He is also survived by his sister Jeanne Davidson (Don) and brother David (Andi). He is predeceased by his sister Margaret (Dick) Boss and son-in-law David Morris.

Born in Vancouver, his family spent time in Ocean Falls and Queen Charlotte Islands where he developed a love for the ocean and boats. After a return to Vancouver, he pursued a career in sheet metal work and furnace installation/repair and spent most of his spare time at his cabin on Mt. Seymour. He and Sheila were married in Vancouver on April 14, 1960. They moved to Kelowna in 1961 where their 3 children were born, then on to Lumby in 1967 and finally to Duncan where he has resided since 1985.

Throughout his life he was engaged in helping others, serving as a Scoutmaster, Venturer Leader and Rover Adviser. After moving to Duncan, he became a member of the 3rd Canadian BP Guild.

Following a heart transplant in 1995, he joined the Hearts in Motion Walking Club. He also enjoyed the monthly breakfast group. For the last 20 years, he was deeply involved with the Cowichan Valley Church of the Nazarene, taking special pleasure in planning and participating in camps at “Dogpatch.�

He will be remembered for his great sense of humour, which enriched the lives of those around him right up to his final hours.

Heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. D. Philippson, Dr. E. Swiggum and the staff at the transplant clinic; Dr. K. Horgan and the staff at the Dialysis clinic; Triana, who was always so helpful; the incredible crew at Ingram Pharmacy; and especially to Pastor Wayne and the church family at Cowichan Valley Church of the Nazarene.

You all helped to minimize problems encountered during the last few years. Al greatly admired and appreciated each one of you.

A Celebration of Al’s life will be held at the Cowichan Valley Church of the Nazarene, 3036 Sherman Rd., Duncan on Saturday, February 15th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Del’s war with cancer, for the last seven years, never once slowed her down or ever got the best of her quick-witted, fiery personality. Throughout her battle she continued to be the “rock� of our family, making it easy for us to love her more and more each day.

Always the first to smile, laugh, enjoy a great party, or “bleep� a wisecrack, made Del the greatest friend, co-worker and best of all,� our mom�.

We would love to thank all the doctors, nurses and support staff at the Victoria Cancer Center, the Leukemia/BMT Program and the BMT Daycare Unit at Vancouver General Hospital for the never-ending excellent treatment that only people who truly care, can provide. SHELLEY, Shirley Jean (nee McConnell) May 18, 1931 – January 31, 2014 Shirley Shelley passed away after a brief illness. Shirley was born in Vancouver, BC to Gladys and Herbert McConnell.

She married James Shelley in Vancouver on August 27, 1949.

Jim and Shirley raised their children in New Westminster where they were both very active in lacrosse and curling and where they began their lifelong love of gardening and roses in particular. After moving to Edmonton, Alberta she worked for many years at Woodward’s department stores, later Jim and Shirley operated several businesses of their own ending with The White Hart Tea Shoppe in Duncan, B.C. In retirement Shirley’s independent, strong, and feisty nature truly shone, she enjoyed travelling with her family and even made a solo trip to England, she relocated to Chemainus where she made new friends and developed a true sense of community. Shirley is survived by sons James (Penny) and Gene, daughters Jeanette (Rick) and Theresa (Grant), grandchildren Lee, Jordy, Kyli, Kendra and great-grandchildren, brother Herbert McConnell, sister Mary McGowan, sister-in-law Vivian McConnell and numerous nephews & nieces. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of wife, mother and “Nana” Linda Lou Wright after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her father, Robert (Bob) McConnell and survived by her loving husband, Richard (Dick) Wright, son Kevin and his wife Lori, daughter Nicole, grandchildren William and Emma, sister Faye (Earl) Cook, and mother Irene McConnell.

Linda was an integral part in her children and grandchildren’s lives on a daily basis. She was a longtime member of the Maple Bay Yacht Club and also enjoyed traveling to exotic places around the world with her husband, family, and numerous close friends. Her infectious attitude on life, smile, and laughter touched every person she met along the way.

A special thanks to Dr. Nathalie Jahnke, the unbelievable and supportive nursing staff at the Cowichan District and Royal Jubilee Hospitals, the BC Cancer Clinic and to all the incredible family an friends that went out of their way to make Linda’s journey from us a loving and peaceful one.

Celebration of Life to be held at the Duncan Christian Reform Church on February 14, 2014, at 1:00pm.

magine an organization which has donated funds for more than 65 consecutive years to support cancer patient care, research and equipment. Now imagine the commitment of thousands of members hosting socials and teas, bazaars, raffles and other fund-raisers, as well as giving freely of their time to meet their charitable goals.

According to Ruth Foster, Director of Cancer Activities for the O.E.S., “There are four categories of annual giving: educational bursaries, equipment, supplies and Cancer Dressings.�

Last year, $8,362.29 was collected from the sale of cancelled stamps and postcards throughout British Columbia and Yukon to be distributed for Cancer Research or Cancer Dressings, wherever it is needed. (We must thank our friends in the community for keeping us well supplied with stamps.)

Last year, throughout our jurisdiction, 170 dedicated members volunteered 8120 hours producing 69,708 cancer dressings at a cost of $9,599.91. (We’ve used up inventory on hand, which once again reduced expenses. There is a need for dressings in Northern BC, so these numbers will likely increase next year.)

Presently, sterilization is only being done by certain Hospitals and Clinics by trained and d qualified staff in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George. The present method of distribution on is - the hospital staff will give the patient a supplyy of cancer dressings to take home. Local cancer patients requiring dressings are asked to contact the Canadian Cancer Society Office at 250-746-4134.

Cancer is a dreadful disease without the added burden of the expense of dressings often required.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE TO THE PATIENT. All that is required is a doctor’s referral.

By supporting our Stamp Project, attending bazaars and teas, the Cabaret Night or buying tickets on our annual Cancer Draw, you enable us to continue our efforts in the fight against cancer. We’ve had a Polar Swim each February since 2005, first at Transfer Beach in Ladysmith and starting this year, at Departure Bay in Nanaimo. Thanks to pledges/donations, the members willing to brave the chilly water, have raised over $50,000.00 for Cancer Projects.

he Duncan Christian School Chargers did the expected by winning the North Island senior boys’ A basketball championship Saturday on its home court.

DCS opened up a 29-13 first-quarter lead in the final against Ucluelet and went on to an 88-72 victory. Ucluelet hung tough with a strong second quarter, outscoring DCS 26-19, and the teams played on even terms in the third quarter 16-16, but another 24-17 scoring advantage in the fourth ended any comeback hopes for the underdogs.

The Chargers have been enjoying a great season and climbed to fifth in the latest provincial A rankings.

The DCS trio of Nick Kapteyn, Doug Groenendijk and Alan Park lit it up for DCS. Groenendijk collected 28 points, Kapteyn had 26 and Park chipped in with 18.

Jesse Van Wingerden helped the team get off to a great start in the first quarter with eight.

Riley Botting was the high man for Ucluelet with 23 and William Tom added 21.

Campbell River Christian finished third, Dwight fourth and Chemainus Secondary fifth.

Campbell River defeated Dwight in the tournament opener 51-38. Kobe Liu was the top scorer for Dwight with 13.

The Chargers then ran away with a 103-18 victory over Chemainus.

Kapteyn exploded for 33 points while Groenendijk accumulated 17 and Park 14. Everyone got on the scoresheet for DCS. Zach Diewert, primarily known as a baseball star, showed his prowess on the basketball court with seven points to lead Chemainus.

The third game ended in a 77-44 victory for Ucluelet over Campbell River Christian. Botting had a whale of a game for Ucluelet with 27 points.

Dwight then defeated Chemainus 57-44 for fourth place, as Andy Lin and Liu led the winners with 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Sam Baker stepped up with 23 points to lead Chemainus.

Juliet King Juliet King’s raw materials — size and strength — turned her into a bonafide basketball player in a hurry with extra training and guidance.

King, 15, a Grade 10 student at Duncan Christian School, is a quick study and it shows in her play. “I remember my first basketball clinic here,’’ she said. “I showed up in a V-neck and spandex. I couldn’t dribble or shoot. But it was really good because no one really pressured you or made fun of you. They just helped you.’’ And King took the direction of coaches like DCS’ Michelle Nederlof and Brett Westcott of Camosun to heart. “At first I wasn’t going to play basketball,’’ King said. “I was going to stick with volleyball because that’s what came first in the season.’’

But she was sold on basketball after being called up from the junior girls to the seniors last year for provincials and then honed her skills at the Fab 50 camp with Westcott and played on his club team for the summer. “It’s like she put a whole year in before she came back to us,’’ said Nederlof. “She just loves the game. You can see she wants to learn.

She tries to do what she’s been asked which is huge.’’

rances Kelsey Hockey Academy closed the book on a successful first semester and is looking forward to an expanded second chapter next year.

The academy is one of several programs affiliated with the Pacific Rim Hockey Academy, providing students with an opportunity to balance their educational requirements while developing their hockey skills.

The first year of the Kelsey Academy was open to seniors in Grades 10 through 12 but viceprincipal Lori Hryniuk is exploring the addition of Grade 8 and 9 students if there’s enough interest.

A meeting was held Tuesday to consider that option.

“The whole concept of an acad-

emy has been interesting to me from an educator’s point of view,’’ said Hryniuk.

A total of 27 students took part in the inaugural year of the program. Most of them were Kerry Park Midget C teammates during their regular hockey activity outside of school, including three girls.

“We didn’t get this out till April,’’ said Hryniuk. “We did manage to get two out-of-area students that came and one that came back from private school.’’

Students earned credits toward graduation and Hryniuk was impressed with the level of commitment shown.

“For the most part, 99% of them were here before I was and that was on the ice at 7:30 (a.m.),’’ she said.

Ice sessions were held three times a week at Kerry Park Arena an hour and a half before school

started under the direction of Trent Brandvold. Dryland the other two days was handled by fitness trainer Michelle Clayton.

Fitness has been one of the greatest areas of improvement shown by the players.

“It’s a great way to stay in shape,’’ said Tyler Carlson, one of the Grade 10 participants who plans to sign up again next year.

“It was really fun,’’ said Amy Osmond, another Grade 10 student.

“I like the dryland, kept in shape.

“We did a lot of different things.’’

“The ice time helped a lot with skill development throughout the season,’’ said Nolan Egeland. “It’s just hanging out with friends on and off the ice.’’

“I thought it was really good for the one-on-one,’’ said goalie Liam Clifford, a Grade 12 student.

“I was with them every day, seeing the level of fitness improve drastically,’’ said Hryniuk.

heir first-round playoff opponent is set and the Kerry Park Islanders know it’s going to be a tall order.

After finishing the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s regular season with a game at Peninsula Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Kerry Park Arena against the Saanich Braves, the Islanders will head right into the playoffs next week against the Victoria Cougars.

The first game in the best-ofseven is next Thursday, Feb. 20 at Victoria and the teams meet in the rematch at Kerry Park Arena Saturday, Feb. 22.

“They’re beatable, for sure,’’ said Islanders’ captain Eric Mansueti.

“It’s not going to be easy. We’re going to have to try our best.

“Hopefully, we can outwork them and see where it goes from there.’’

Mansueti conceded the Islanders need to get off to a strong start in the series.

“We’re just hoping we can steal one in their rink,’’ he said. “We usually play them pretty well in our rink.’’

The Braves, who will finish behind the Islanders in the South Division, came out firing and put 41 shots on net. But Leighton Williams provided the Islanders with acrobatic goaltending.

“They came at us pretty hard,’’ said Mansueti. “We withstood that and being able to pull it out was good.’’

Mansueti scored the winner with the Islanders shorthanded off a Saanich miscue with only 17

seconds left in regulation time.

The Islanders iced the puck and Mansueti’s presence loused up Saanich.

“I just somehow got there first and threw it on net and hit their goalie’s skate,’’ he said. “That was that. It went in.’’

Matt Osmond scored the other two goals for the Islanders.

Colton Burt and Hobin Zinck tallied in the loss to Westshore.

“We almost looked tired out there,’’ said Mansueti. “We’ve got a pretty short lineup. There’s a lot of injuries right now and it’s kind of tough.’’

Scoring one-half of its previous season total in one game was a confidence-builder for the Cowichan LMG Pringle offense.

Otherwise, not much could be said for Saturday’s 13-0 victory over last-place Prospect Lake in a Div. 1 Island Soccer League game at the Ladysmith Turf.

“They started with 10 (men), then went down to nine and ended with eight,’’ said Cowichan coach Glen Martin.

“One kid had to leave at halftime, one was injured.’’

Cowichan didn’t even try to score that many goals, but couldn’t help it. Connor Crichton fired a hat trick and Ryan Andre added his first three of the season.

Cowichan plays Div. 2 Gorge in the Jackson Cup opener Saturday at 7 p.m. at Ladysmith.

he Cowichan Valley Capitals battled fatigue as well as the Coquitlam Express Sunday afternoon at Cowichan Arena and couldn’t quite muster enough energy for a third straight B.C. Hockey League weekend victory.

After beating the Clippers 4-3 in double overtime in Nanaimo Friday and nipping the Powell River Kings Saturday night at Cowichan Arena in dramatic fashion 5-4, the Caps were shut out 3-0 by the Express.

“We just weren’t as sharp or as consistent and doing the small things,’’ said Caps’ head coach Bob Beatty after Sunday’s game. “We didn’t get enough contact.’’

Coquitlam scored once in each period, including an empty-netter from Joey Santucci with 35 seconds remaining. The Caps had numerous scoring chances among their 46 shots at Coquitlam goalie Pierce Dushenko, but couldn’t beat him.

Mason Malkowich hit the post with seven minutes left. It was that kind of afternoon for the Caps.

“We don’t as a rule score five or six goals a game,’’ said Beatty. “Coquitlam, they’ve got snipers. They’re a skilled team.’’

It was hard for Beatty to be too down on the game, although it was huge in the standings for the Caps.

They could have moved three points up on the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the Island Division.

“You’re only as good as your last game,’’ said Beatty.

The team only had a few days to chew on the outcome before going to Nanaimo again Wednesday and then hosting Merritt Saturday.

As much as the Caps were weary, Beatty stressed the players need to follow the formula that’s been working for them.

“It’s the mentality we have to have and we’ve got to stick with it,’’ said Beatty. “We can’t stray from being a straight line, gritty hockey team.’’

In Nanaimo, the Caps built a 3-0 lead on goals by Myles Powell, Taylor Allan and Colton Kehler, but the Clippers battled back to tie it. But Powell’s second goal of the game 2:45 into the three-on-three overtime

and working hard to clean their routine,’’ noted coach Rhonda Dale.

Each routine consists of tumbling, dance, jumps and stunting.

The senior team has 12 members between the ages of 11 and 18 and placed fifth all-around.

“This is a good start to our season and we look forward to improving each time,’’ Dale indicated.

It was a similar story Saturday against Powell River with the Caps leading 4-1 after the second period on scoring shots from Allan, Dane Gibson, Kehler and Matthew Berry-Lamontagna, but the Kings rallied with three straight to tie it.

Just as overtime was looming, the Caps got on a power play and Kehler buried the game-winner with only 24 seconds left in regulation time.

The Caps have six regular-season games remaining.

t took one half for the Cowichan Rugby Club’s First Division Piggies to get it going again after the long Christmas break.

It was only 15-11 for the Piggies at halftime in their return game against the Port Alberni Black Sheep, but then they turned on the afterburners for a convincing 41-18 victory.

However, “the score didn’t depict how hard Port Alberni played,’’ noted Cowichan’s Andrew Gudmundseth.

Port Alberni always provides tough competition and Cowichan felt like it owed the Black Sheep one after a previous meeting before the break.

“Still smarting from a good beat-down they put on us just before the break, the boys came out ready and fired up to play,’’ noted Cowichan coach Gord McGeachy.

Cowichan dominated the opening 20 minutes at the Herd Road Grounds that led to tries by Gabe Farrell and Owen Wood plus a convert and penalty from Wood.

“We took our foot off the gas and Port was able to claw their way back into the game late in the half with two penalties and a try,’’ noted McGeachy.

Immediately after halftime, however, Robbie McDonnell went over for a try after a great solo effort and Wood converted.

The scoring continued with Danny Hamstra setting up brother Carlin, who still had lots of work to do but found his way over for a try converted by Wood.

Farrell notched his second try of the match, as Cowichan started to run away with it. The scoring was rounded out by new guy Jordan Weisner, who stretched his run out to the corner for a try.
