Geetha Raghavan, the owner of Blue Line Sports in Lougheed Town Centre, says she’s confident excitement for the Winter Olympics will build once the Games begin in earnest. But, she says, nothing can match the thrill of 2010, when customers lined up down the concourse after Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal won Canada the gold medal in the men’s hockey final.

Four years ago Geetha Raghavan could barely keep officially licensed Olympics and Team Canada gear on the shelves of her Blue Line Sports store in Lougheed Town Centre. With this year’s Winter Games starting on Friday in Sochi, Russia, she says the Canada merchandise in her displays is proving a tougher sell. “It’s been slowly going, but it’s not like a rush yet,” says Raghavan, who recalls people were lined up

The National Energy Board isn’t a multiheaded monster ready to devour all who stand before it. In fact, the board members who will be guiding the 15-month process of reviewing the application by Kinder Morgan to expand its Trans Mountain Pipeline from the oilsands of northern Alberta to the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby are stepping out of the boardroom to encourage the public to get involved in the hearings. The deadline to apply as an intervenor or commenter is Feb. 12. “This is kind of a new world,” said Don Young, one of three board members who will be conducting the review. “Transparency is extremely important to the NEB.” So much so the board members did the media rounds through Metro Vancouver on Tuesday, something they’ve never done before prior to a review process. “It’s kind of taking the mystique away,” said David Hamilton, a part-time board member who lives on Vancouver Island. New chair means new moves for dancer Local company helps out ballroom competitor Mario Bartel

photo@burnabynewsleader.com

A competitive ballroom dancer will be able to glide and twirl across the hardwood floor as never before thanks to the generosity of a Burnaby company. But it’s not a new pair of shoes that will allow Olesia Komienko to trip the light even more fantastical. It’s a new wheelchair. On Tuesday, Motion Specialties—located in Burnaby’s Big Bend industrial area—presented Komienko with a new, lightweight, custom-fit wheelchair to replace her 18-year-old chair that had seen better days and could no longer withstand the rigours of the dance floor. Komienko was born with cerebral palsy, and hasn’t

let her disability hold her back. The 35-year-old native of Russia is the only competitive wheelchair ballroom dancer in British Columbia. She and her instructor Andy Wong have danced at the annual Snowball Classic, the Pro-Am Fiesta and the Grand Ball competitions in Vancouver. But Komienko’s dilapidated chair limited some of the moves and spins she could make, said Wong, who owns the Grand Ballroom studio in Vancouver. After demonstrating a couple of their routines in Motion Specialties’ showroom, he knows there will be more complex moves they’ll be able to try. “It’s meant to move and turn,” said Wong of his pupil’s sleek new red chair. “It’s a lot more musical. It’s smooth.” Komienko’s journey

to acquire the chair was anything but. She immigrated to British Columbia with her mother, Tatiana, in 2011, after enduring a lifetime of discrimination and

misunderstanding because Russian authorities regarded her cerebral palsy more as a mental illness than a physical disability. She has difficulty speaking and controlling her facial

muscles, as well as some of those in her limbs, but her intellect is intact. She’s a published poet and has dabbled in art. As the Komienkos struggled to settle into their

new life, money for a new wheelchair kept slipping down their priority list. The government wouldn’t help, and an attempt at online crowd sourcing fell short. That’s when a neighbour in their Vancouver apartment building rolled in to help. Larry Relkoff, who’s also in a wheelchair, started advocating for Komienko, calling around to see if he could get her a better chair. One of those calls was answered by Rick Nori of Centric Health, Motion Specialties’ parent company. Working with specialized wheelchair manufacturer TiLite, they were able to secure a new chair worth $3,000. “Her story touched our hearts,” said Nori. And judging by the smile that spread across Komienko’s face as she took a few solo twirls in her new chair, their help touched her’s.

“We’re putting a face on who we are and the process.” For Young, Hamilton and Lyne Mercier, the third board member, that process is already underway as they read through the 15,000 pages of Kinder Morgan’s application. To help them navigate the often dense,

technical details the board has at its disposal more than 450 professional staff that includes biologists, engineers, experts in aboriginal affairs, socioeconomic policy, safety and, of course, lawyers. “They help us craft our information requests so we can dig into what it’s necessary for us to know,” said Mercier.

Once the deadline for applications to participate in the hearings has passed, the board members will review each one and schedule dates and locations for the formal hearings from there. That should happen by the end of March. Hamilton fully expects they’ll be back in Metro Vancouver when the time comes. “We like to go where

support, as well as some funding, to help interveners and commenters properly prepare their presentations. “It’s important to be prepared,” said Young. “It’s a substantial

commitment of time and resources.” So far the NEB has received more than 380 applications from intervenors and commenters. Mercier said she expects that number will continue to climb as the Feb. 12 deadline nears, thanks to the efforts of people like Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart, who’s been holding public

What you need to know about the Trans Mountain Expansion Project After nearly two years of conversations, studies and planning, Trans Mountain filed a Facilities Application with the National Energy Board (NEB) in December 2013 for its proposed $5.4 billion expansion project. Respectful and authentic dialogue begins with transparency and a common understanding of the facts. As we move forward in the regulatory process, we are committed to making sure that people have access to the facts about our proposal and the process. The following is aimed at correcting misinformation being spread by individuals and groups in your community. CLAIM

CLAIM

Land will be expropriated; people will lose their homes.

The route for the proposed Trans Mountain Expansion Project has already been determined.

REALITY Trans Mountain does not have the right to expropriate land. We have established and maintained relationships with landowners – 2,200 along the current pipeline including three private landowners in Burnaby – neighbours and communities along the pipeline corridor for the last 60 years. Our goal is to treat all landowners fairly and equitably. In the unlikely event that we cannot reach an agreement with a landowner, the NEB can grant right of entry to allow us to build and maintain the pipeline, but not to expropriate or take away any land or homes from owners.

CLAIM The opportunity for public input into the project is limited.

REALITY In our Facilities Application, we’ve identified a potential pipeline corridor, and in some cases, multiple alternatives. These corridors are wider than what the permanent rightof-way will be. They provide the flexibility to respond to stakeholder input or to place the pipe so as to minimize local community or environmental impacts. A final rightof-way will be determined only after regulatory approval and during the detailed design phase. It is important to note that 73 per cent of the proposed expanded pipeline will follow the existing right-of-way where the Trans Mountain pipeline has been operating safely for 60 years. An additional 17 per cent of the proposed expansion will follow existing utility corridors and only the remaining 10 per cent would require greenfield right-of-way.

REALITY To date, we’ve engaged with thousands of individuals through 63 open houses and workshops along the pipeline and marine corridors and hundreds of meetings between project team members and stakeholder groups. Our work continues, with opportunities for continued dialogue throughout the process.

CLAIM

The NEB will hold a public hearing on the Application before it makes a decision, allowing people or groups who have been granted permission to participate by the NEB a chance to raise issues, present evidence, test evidence and provide their input. Information on how to participate in this process can be found on the NEB’s website at www.neb-one.gc.ca on the Trans Mountain Expansion page.

Along our existing pipeline route, which has been in place for 60 years, there is no measurable difference between properties with or without an easement. However, we appreciate that land devaluation is a concern. Looking ahead to the new pipeline, companies are required by the NEB act to compensate landowners for any new easement and pay for any impacts or inconvenience associated with the new pipeline. Included within the determination of compensation is any change in the value of the property before and after the pipeline is built.

We encourage you to join this process – we want to ensure that no voice goes unheard and no concern goes unaddressed. If you hear more claims that you’d like us to address, please send them to us. Please visit our website or contact us if you have questions or would like to learn more about the proposed project.

Property values near the pipeline have already declined and will continue to drop. REALITY

OPINION GUEST VIEW:

PuBLISHED & PRINTED BY BLACK PRESS LTD. at 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Loosening the rules Big changes are afoot in the administration of liquor in this province. And while most of the changes mark a shift toward treating adults as adults, among those who choose to drink, not everyone exhibits adult behaviour where the consumption of alcohol is concerned. Part of the proposed changes include eliminating beer gardens, the penned off areas at public events that separate “family” areas from those where carded adults may purchase and drink alcohol. On the surface, the idea of allowing people who may be attending events with underage family members to enjoy their beverages as a family makes sense. We’d like to think that people who take their young relatives to an event aren’t going to overconsume alcohol in their presence. But the potential for problems doesn’t lie with the majority of people who will obey the law, it’s with the small minority who choose to flout the rules, get drunk and obnoxious in a “family” area. Promoters of music festivals and other similar events have applauded the proposed changes, saying they’ll bring B.C. into the 21st century when it comes to treating people with respect and allowing them to make the right choices. But what about festival goers who don’t make the right choices? Based on past experience, we expect the province to shift that task onto liquor licensees, in this case, the people who stage community events. Will those organizations have the resources or the expertise to take on the role of ensuring liquor doesn’t fall into the hands of minors? Local organizers have shown they can manage the task under the old system. What’s clear is these issues will need to be addressed before the province puts pen to paper and creates new regulations. —Victoria News/Black Press

How about a slippery kind of Valentine? The sugar-sweet onslaught of Valentine’s Day makes me feel a little sick. Some of those cards are so syrupy. So, in a moment of nausea in the Valentine’s Day section at Hallmark, I came up with an alternative for those of us who have already over-dosed on LOVE, those who just can’t sign their name to such mushy sentiments. There should be Valentine’s Day cards for those who, at the moment, feel LOVE is a four-letter word. Scale Mail. Listen up brokenhearted people. This is for you revenge-seekers, the lovelorn, the abandoned at a nightclub, the co-worker lovers who have split, partners who have parted, and all darlings who have been dumped. Scale Mail – send your ex a fish. It’s one of those middle of the night ideas, possibly worthy of Dragon’s Den. I’m going to develop Scale Mail and sell it to Plenty of Fish, the dating company, so they can cover both ends of the love market; meeting and parting. Yes! Scale Mail is guaranteed to be pungent and putrid. Choose a ten-pound spawning salmon

Anne Hopkinson or a dog shark for your ex-lover. Winter rates apply, with a small fee added as the boxes must be heated for maximum decay. Don’t delay! Special Valentine’s offer for broken engagements and dating-your-best-friend exes. Delivery is guaranteed to be at least ten days, and fifteen days is only $10 extra. Sorry, we are out of catfish and coelacanths – new stock arriving in March. Just in time for Easter! We have chocolate covered dead pike again this year due to popular demand. Connoisseurs! Get on the waiting list for coal dust fish from the train derailment into Burnaby’s Silver Creek. They’ll be black and smelly! And there are plenty of trout and whitefish available from the tailing ponds at Fort McMurray. The ones with visible tumours are particularly popular so get your orders in soon.

I had to snap out of it, and choose a few cards. But the stream-ofconsciousness shtick on Scale Mail made me realize how easy it is to become cynical, and dismiss the real value of Valentine’s Day. Sure it’s marketing, sure it’s over the top, and it can feel artificial or contrived. Retailers are hoping shoppers

have recovered from their Christmas shopping bills and are ready to consume again. Is there a subtle connection between Valentine’s Day and all the beds and bed linen on sale lately? But somewhere in all the cupid hoopla and sugar frenzy there is an opportunity to express our gratitude and passion for the people we love. I know – it should be every day, it should any random day – but being humans, we do forget. If Valentine’s Day nudges us to articulate our feelings for the people we love then it’s worth it. If a five dollar card leads to a laugh or a tear, and a kiss, then I’m all for it. It’s easy to be cheeky or sarcastic, cynical or negative. I guess Scale Mail is just too cruel. I mean, I’m hoping to receive a Valentine, and with it the good feeling that someone cared enough to send me one. No matter how easy it is to be cynical, it’s better to be genuine. COMMENT

Civic politics was once less party-focused Re: Burnaby’s wealth, and the taxing question (NewsLeader, Jan. 24) It was refreshing to read the column by Wanda Chow because I was aware of the council members back when Tom Constable and Vic Stusiak were around. Viewing the silly antics of the Vancouver aldermen at that time made me grateful I lived in Burnaby where everyone at city hall got along. In municipal politics then, little mention was made of Social Credit, Liberal or NDP. It was just the Burnaby Citizens Party and the Burnaby Voters Party. I was always impressed with how the elected officials conducted themselves at their public meetings. The good of Burnaby seemed to be the objective. Current politicians give the impression their party comes first. My ballot was marked for a mix of candidates from both parties, and while I favoured the Burnaby Citizens, I always cast a vote for Stusiak and Doreen Lawson, as they kept things on an even keel. While I will agree that it isn’t wise to have no opposition on the present council, I have yet to see much comment, other than criticism, about what the other parties would do different if they had a chance. Perhaps that is the sign (so far, anyway) that the people of Burnaby are contented for the most part in how things are run. V. Jarvis Burnaby

Keep a close watch on those pipes Re: Burnaby council to keep close eye on derailment investigation If people got up at night and went down to the railway tracks near their houses they would be shocked at the sheer volume and contents of the trains passing through their neighbourhoods. Everyone likes to believe that the problem is not in their neighbourhood. Not true, these pipes run under your child/ grandchild’s school, etc. Go to www.burnaby pipelinewatch.ca/ and get involved. We can do this. Dale Hunter —online comment burnabynewsleader.com

nothing wrong with private power Re: Secret Liberals don’t want us to know (Letters, NewsLeader, Jan. 29) I must have hit a nerve! I support renewable energy, period, not just in B.C. but everywhere, whether it be hydro, wind, solar or geothermal— regardless of who builds and owns it. And others do as well. I note that Powerex, the BC Hydro subsidiary responsible for exporting electricity, makes a profit of $133 million each year by selling “green” electricity (which commands a higher price in the U.S. than fossilfuel-generated electricity) to our American neighbours. Mr. Martin contends that the purchase of privately generated electricity, which only accounts for six per cent of B.C. capacity, is a bad business decision. This is plain misinformation. In the 2003 Clean Power Call the average price paid by BC Hydro to the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) was 5.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. In 2006 this price was 6.5 cents, and in 2010 it was 8.5 cents. B.C. ratepayers currently pay 8.3 cents per kilowatt-hour for tier 1 power and higher rates for tier 2. So any contention that BC Hydro buys high and sells low in purchasing IPP power simply does not hold water. Meanwhile it is also a fact that BC Hydro must spend $14 billion to upgrade and maintain existing transmission, distribution and generation assets, some dating back to the 1940s. Mr. Martin can click on the BC Hydro website to see for himself where these funds are going—none to privately built generating structures. Then there are the additional billions BC Hydro must invest in new transmission lines to meet additional power demands. Consider for example the recent announcements from the Premier for eight new mines and nine mine expansions over the next seven years. The associated jobs will employ skilled union tradespeople, boost B.C. exports and provide money to fund health care, education and other public services. These increased loads will require 12,000 more

gigawatt-hours per year, or 20 per cent of B.C.’s current capacity. Taking into account the anticipated population growth over the next 10 to 20 years, coupled with the new transit infrastructure, it is conservatively predicted that demand will grow by another 24,000 gigawatt-hours, or 40 per cent of current capacity. This expected load demand will have to come from new renewable energy installations. It’s another simple fact that BC Hydro has a long and successful history in building large dam hydro installations such as Site C. This ambitious project has just entered its twoyear environmental assessment process. (Should it pass all hurdles it will take 10 more years to build.) Site C as now configured will provide 5,000 gigawatt hours of generating capacity at a projected capital cost of $8.5 billion. This would easily make Site C the most expensive source of electricity in B.C. to date—assuming no delays or cost overruns. The funds required to build Site C or other new generating capacity must come from Hydro’s operating profits or from increased borrowing in the capital markets, or both. Fortunately conservation triggered by higher electricity prices can both damp this expected increase in demand and reduce Hydro’s net borrowing requirement by increasing operating cash flow. While B.C. enjoys the second lowest electricity rates in Canada, we are also the largest per capita consumers of electricity in North America. This is not something to be proud of. It suggests we are addicted to cheap electricity and abuse that bounty. The sooner people realize the days of cheap electricity are over and everyone must conserve electricity, lessening Hydro’s requirement to build new generating capacity, the better off we will all be. V LENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s — with kids? Romantic nights out on the town are how many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day. But not everyone can get a babysitter on Valentine’s, so why not enjoy time with the kids? There are plenty of familyfriendly Valentine’s Day activities worth a try. Dessert spree

several years. Have all members of the family gather favourite items or things sentimental to them and place them in the box. These can be ticket stubs, photographs, jewelry, or other trinkets. Place them in the box and seal it. Agree not to open the box until next Valentine’s Day to see how the family has grown and evolved.

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year to fully engage your sweet tooth. And what child doesn’t enjoy sampling plenty of sweet treats? Create a sundae station after dinner, complete with different flavours of ice cream and various toppings. Include mixins, like brownie bits or small chunks of pound cake. Everyone can create their own sundae, topped off with whipped cream and a cherry.

Who says you have to venture out for fine dining? Plan an intimate dinner in your own dining room. Have the family dress up and enjoy a candle-lit meal on fine china. The meal need not be fancy, as long as everyone enjoys it. Plan for dessert afterward.

Getting a handwritten letter nowadays is extraordinary, as people often do not take the time to write letters in an age when emailing, texting and tweeting have revolutionized the way people communicate with one another. However, writing notes, letters and exclamations of love can be more intimate, especially on Valentine’s Day. In France, love letters are called billet doux. The French are known to be romantics at heart, but that doesn’t mean people from all over the globe can’t put pen to paper to express their feelings. Handwritten letters are often seen as thoughtful gestures, especially when those letters are expressing

envelope to use for the letter. If you are putting forth the effort to create a beautiful, handwritten letter, you can add to the experience by selecting a fine paper on which to write. There are many different types of paper, including some that are embossed. Some may even feature flower petals or leaves embedded in the paper. • Brush up on your penmanship. A letter will be rendered useless if it isn’t legible. Therefore, practice penmanship before sitting down to write your letter. • Have a picture of the person to whom you will be addressing the letter nearby. This may provide some inspiration. • Jot down ideas on a piece of scrap paper. Think about how your romantic partner makes you feel and the qualities he or she possesses that you find appealing, and use concrete examples why you love and care for this person.

• Write a rough draft of the letter and be sure to proofread it for misspellings and grammatical errors. • Always write from the heart and be sincere in what you say. Try to call out specific examples that recall particularly fond memories. • Write your final copy of the letter on the good paper. Make sure it is neat and legible. Be sure you date it because it is likely the note will be saved. • You may want to wait a day or two before sending the letter to be sure the sentiments you expressed are truly what you want to say. If so, mail or hand deliver the note. Love letters and other handwritten notes are quickly becoming a thing of the past, as technology has largely replaced pen and paper. Yet, those who want to add a special touch to any occasion can choose to write a letter and make a lasting impression.
