Action Group a multi-faceted service for Lacombe and area Community organization has a 35-year history in the City and beyond

F

or more than 35 years, Action Group has been providing services to Lacombe and beyond.

Action Group is a not-for-proďŹ t group based in Lacombe that offers support to individuals with developmental disabilities. It provides a number of services to both adults and children in Central Alberta including employment services and residential services.

Action Group was formed in 1976 by a group of parents in Lacombe, some of whom had children with developmental disabilities, who decided to build a group home in the community for their children. Since then, the organization has expanded to offer other services as well and now operates throughout Central Alberta.

Deb Martin, executive director for Action Group, has been with the organization since the very beginning.

When she joined, operating that one group home was the extent of Action Group’s services.

Martin said that there are a great many things she enjoys about working with Action Group, but one of her favourite aspects of the job is seeing the clients develop over the years. “We have a number of individuals who have been here since they were children,� said Martin. “(I enjoy seeing) them grow and develop and become successful adults and be happy in the community.�

Finding out what is necessary for an individual to be successful and providing them with those skill sets is another thing Martin enjoys about her job, she said. “It’s just like your own kids,� said Martin. “You want to see them grow up and be successful. And I’ve been able to see that with so many individuals and that’s very rewarding.�

In fact, giving individuals the tools they need to be successful is at its most basic what Action Group does.

Martin said Action Group works with varied disabilities, but tries to focus instead on what can be done to make individuals

Today, Action Group manages about 20 residential homes (and is building two more to open the beginning of April) and has an operating budget of over $12 million. Martin said the organization evolved over time, expanding to meet the needs of its clients and their families.

Martin said that after awhile Action Group began looking into employment supports to offer all facets of service rather than just residential.

ployment and outreach services.

Now, the organization offers two types of employment services. Those are the programs for those with development disabilities and programs for those without.

The program serving individuals with developmental disabilities is two-fold.

Martin said Action Group does employment prep with its clients and then ďŹ nds a placement and then works on stabilization and making sure that job is a good ďŹ t for the individual.

Sometimes ďŹ nding a good ďŹ t will require a change in jobs, working with the client so that they perform better at work or

working with the employer so they are aware of any special needs the client might have, said Martin.

She said that Action Group works with a number of employers in all kinds of industries within Lacombe and Red Deer.

Action Group also has an employment centre that caters to Albertans without disabilities. Martin said the centre works both with employers to ďŹ nd potential employees and with potential employees to ďŹ nd employment.

She added that between 20,000 and 30,000 individuals might come through the employment ofďŹ ce in one year.

tion Group does is community access services, connecting people to the community. One of the ways this is done is through a learning circle program in Lacombe and Red Deer, said Martin.

Martin said the goal behind community is to connect individuals to the community so that they are able to do things independently.

She added that Action Group’s programs have been quite successful in forming those connections. “A lot of the individuals (in our programs) have more connections with the community than the majority of the population.� news@lacombeexpress.com

Drivers urged to be wary of changing road conditions

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express After the weather changed from what supposed to be a warm, pleasant week to a blustery, snowy one, the weather’s impact on road conditions made for a busy weekend for Lacombe Fire Department.

Fire Chief Ed van Delden said that the ďŹ re department has faced a rash of calls in the last week, particularly on Jan. 29 - 31.

He said that between these two days, the ďŹ re department was dispatched to more than 10 rollovers, most of them on the QEII Hwy. van Delden added that ďŹ re assistance was not needed at all of the incidents and the department was not required to respond on scene to all the dispatches.

He said that the driving conditions on Jan. 29 - 31 were not particularly poor, but winter driving conditions did exist. Prior to last week, Central Alberta drivers had been enjoying bare, dry roads and

prime driving conditions but van Delden said that people need to remember that driving conditions can change day-to-day in Alberta, and drivers need to stay vigilant. “I get a sense from some of the people that have hit the ditch that they ought to be able to drive 110 (kilometres) all year round. Really, that is the maximum speed.�

Most dangerous are the roads that are marginally bad, said van Delden. He reasoned that when the roads are truly treacherous, drivers ‘get it’, and slow down accordingly. “When it’s really storming out there, we get it.

People slow down and drive respectfully and responsibly.�

But when roads are just a little bit below ideal, it catches drivers unaware.

This is particularly true when the road conditions change from good to not quite as good. “We are especially vulnerable, when (road conditions) change. We are a little slow to pick up on the change.�

As usual, van Delden said that slowing down is the best way to deal with winter road conditions.

He added that while there were several rollovers when the road conditions changed, there were also a lot of drivers who navigated them without issue and it is up to the drivers to react responsibly to changing road conditions.

Jan. 29. and eight rollovers on Jan. 31. van Delden said that in all of the incidents Lacombe Fire Department responded to, ďŹ re crew responsibilities were limited mostly to preparing patients for transport and cleaning up crash sites.

While extraction was needed at some of the rollovers, use of hydraulic tools was not necessary

and mostly crews just needed to provide small assistance, like digging snow away from doors. Some of the vehicle occupants in the crashes sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment but most of those injuries were superďŹ cial and none were life-threatening, said van Delden. news@lacombeexpress.com

Christianity and evolution – two different beliefs Contrary to what many people think, the choice here is not between science and religion, but between two different religions.Â

BEUKEMA As the anti-creationist M. Ruse admitted in the National Post (May 13, 2000), “Evolution is promulgated as an ideology- a full-edged alternative to Christianity, with meaning and morality... Evolution is a religion.â€? Contrary to what our children in public high school and university are being taught, evolution has not been proven by science.

Far from it. As L. Harrison Matthews rightly conceded in the foreword to the 1971 edition of Darwin’s Origin of the Species, “evolution is the backbone of biology, and biology is thus in the peculiar position of being a science founded on an unproved theory- is it then a science or a faith?�

Not only is evolution an unproven theory, but unlike the Biblical account of creation, its faith is maintained against insurmountable evidence to the contrary. As Darwin himself said, “By this theory, innumerable transitional forms must have existed.

Why do we not ďŹ nd them imbedded in the crust if the earth?â€? The continued failure to ďŹ nd any evidence of transitional forms prompted A. Lunn to write a parody of such faith, saying, “Now faith is the substance of fossils hoped for, the evidence of links unseen.â€?

But not only are there no transitional forms, our knowledge of genetics provides the fatal objection to evolution.

For Darwinism to be true, for one kind of organism to evolve into a more complex one, for amoebas to turn into men, you need an unfathomable increase of DNA, the information contained in every living cell that determines what that organism will be and what particular characteristics it will display. All that natural selection and survival of the ďŹ ttest demonstrate is a loss of DNA, never a gain. And the

same is true for gene mutations.

So far, all we have observed with mutations is the breakdown, corruption, or loss of information, never any addition. The Bible says that God created all living things “according to their kinds�

(Genesis 1:11, 12, 21, 24, 25), not becoming other kinds, and that is exactly what we see, and have always seen,

in the world around us. The Bible says that God created man in His own image, and as qualitatively different from the animals, so that we might care for the world as God’s representatives, and know and love God as no other creature can (Genesis 1:27-28).

This, too, explains why human beings are so different from the animals; why we have a sense of

right and wrong, and why we inherently believe that there must be more to life than mere existing and dying. Contrary to evolution, the Bible says that we did not start out bad and become progressively better, but that we started out good and became bad; that the death and misery that marks our world is the result of an historic rebellion against God by our ďŹ rst

parents, Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). And the Bible declares that this God, in His great love, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to our fallen world, to pay the penalty of our sin by His death on the cross, that whoever believes in Him should be reconciled to God as His dearly loved children, and restored to His glorious image.

Evolution says you

started as slime, that you are your own maker, and, therefore, your own master. Evolution says death is good, that this life is all there is, so live as you please, regardless of God and others. Christianity says we were made to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

Alberta Pork hosts workshops to educate farmers on PED

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea, or PED, is a malady that has recently crossed the border from the United States into Canada. As the disease is 100% fatal to piglets within five weeks of birth, pork producers are doing whatever they can to contain the disease and prevent it from spreading any further.

To that effect, Alberta Pork is holding a number of workshops to inform farmers about the disease and tell them what can be done to prevent it. Will Kingma, a hog farmer in the Bentley area who represents the central zone on the Alberta Pork Board of Directors, said the object is to give pork producers as much information as possible.

Kingma said the goal behind the awareness campaign

is to keep PED off of Alberta farms. He added the best way to do that is to closely monitor hog transport trucks coming into farms to make sure they have been cleaned and disinfected. Transport trucks pose the biggest risk of spreading PED. PED spreads among pigs mostly through contact with manure. If infected pigs have been in a transport trailer, it will be contaminated with feces carrying the disease. Even if the trailer is cleaned the virus can survive, said Kingma. He added that this time of year is the prime season for the disease as it can survive in sub-zero temperatures and spreads even in freezing temperatures.

Currently, the only instances of PED in Canada have been limited to Ontario, and Alberta Pork is hoping it stays that way. Luckily, there are few transport trucks that travel between eastern and western Canada, said Kingma.

the Canadian-U.S. border and there are many more cases of PED in the States, said Kingma. He added that PED coming into Canada has heightened awareness about the disease and created an environment to spread the message of prevention.

An ideal way to combat the spread of PED would be to have wash stations close to the border on the Canadian side where transports could be washed, disinfected, dried and audited soon after crossing the boarder from the U.S. PED affects adult and immature pigs alike, but it is most dangerous to piglets. PED poses no health risk to humans, but that doesn’t mean that humans will not suffer any negative impact should the disease continue to spread.

Kingma said the disease has the potential to devastate hog herds to the point where farmers may be forced to go out of business.

Court-ordered sale of development The City has received notice that a court-ordered sale on the Wolf Creek Crossing Development lands is underway, based on the mortgagee being in default to the mortgager.

“On behalf of council, I must say that I’m disappointed and saddened by this turn of events, as this type of retail development is important to the community,” said Mayor Steve Christie.

Prior to this recent turn of events, the City had provided the developer with the necessary permits required to proceed with development.

Since the approval of the Wolf Creek Crossing Outline Plan and the amendments to the City’s South East Area Structure Plan, City administration had been working with the Wolf Creek Crossing developer on the terms of the development agreement and

subdivision application for Phase 1A of the development.

The City had two subdivision processes in progress with the developer in Wolf Creek Crossing. One development agreement is in place for a subdivision completed in 2013, and a development permit has been processed and approved by the City that involves the construction of a hotel.

The City has not received any as-built plans for Wolf Creek Crossing, and no construction completion applications have been made. As far as the City is concerned, the project’s infrastructure is in an incomplete state.

The City also holds a security in the Wolf Creek Crossing development, in accordance with the development agreement, for municipal improvements on this site.

OPINION Leave competition to athletes It’s a good time to be a sports fan.

Today marks the start of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and closer to home, the 2014 Alberta Winter Games begin today in Banff and Canmore.

While it wrapped up on Sunday, Superbowl XLVIII is worth mentioning as well. Of course, we cannot forget that the 2014 Alberta Men’s Provincial Championship Boston Pizza Cup is already well underway.

With so many events taking place now and some of them in our own backyard, it would be foolish for sports fans not to take advantage of the opportunity to take some of them in and support the athletes.

Fans are important if not essential to sports. Ask any high caliber athlete, heck ask any athlete at all and they will tell you that what they do would not be possible without supporters.

Athletes will also tell you that nothing sounds better

than hearing fans cheer them on.

So, fans are a good thing.

They promote sports, athletes and encourage athletes to do a better job or continue performing admirably. However, sports fans have the potential to engage in less than amiable practices too. Sometimes, fans aren’t content with watching, they want to compete, so they put down fans of other teams or brag about their own.

While the sporting world is one of the best breeding grounds for developing characteristics like camaraderie, teamwork and sportsmanship it can also be home to some undesirable features like snobbery and trash-talk as well.

It is something that really has no place in sports.

Every fan likes to think the team or athlete they support is the best. That’s fine, but just because you think your team is the best doesn’t mean you have to

tell everyone else that their team is worse.

Fans are like athletes in a lot of ways. They celebrate when the team wins, grieve when the team loses and offer encouragement and support in either case.

As such, fans should

have the same responsibilities when it comes to displaying sportsmanship, something that should be the bedrock of any sport but is seen too little in the sporting world these days.

So, when you are watching your event of choice

this week, (and we would recommend you make it the Boston Pizza Cup, how often does Lacombe get to host an event that draws attention on a national scale?) cheer often but leave the competition to the athletes.

These stories primarily look at the positives of a thriving community and the challenges of meeting the expectations of the citizens as Blackfalds changes from a “Small bedroom community” into a regional hub and complete service community.

And while the new recreation facility, new trails and new roads are all needed, it really is the staff behind the scenes that are making it possible to meet the needs of the community.

In the Town of Blackfalds 2014 budget, another record will be broken.

This will be the single largest staff increase that the community

has ever seen. Positions are being added in every department in order to better serve and support our town.

A new community peace officer is being added to increase enforcement and education of local bylaws.

An economic development officer is being added, to not only to attract business investment, but to develop communication strategies, so residents are better connected to the community.

A municipal clerk and an IT support person are being added to improve the operations at the town office.

Two positions in Public Works will help meet the growth demands and improve service delivery. Every new house built adds additional roadways which in turn require maintenance, such as snow removal.

Additional water and sewer lines are also required, which also need to be maintained.

Two part-time FCSS positions are being expanded to better meet the demands in our social services programming and an additional RCMP officer will be joining our detachment.

The Community Services De-

partment is hard at work bringing the Abbey Center online and much anticipation is building within our community.

Guest services and children’s programming personnel are the focus for the March 17th soft opening with aquatic staff, lifeguards and instructors being the priority for the May 24th grand opening.

This facility is filled with new, modern amenities and equipment, but it will be the staff that will guide and transform this building into a regional hub of fitness, family activities and more.

Sometimes working as a civil servant is a bit of thankless job.

Budget limitations, local policy and regulations from the provincial and federal governments, can prevent staff from meeting all of the service demands of the public.

For example, snow removal is never judged by the quality of the first road done, but by the last road completed.

The Public Works staff has extreme pride in the work that they do, and want to deliver the service as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The variables that are outside of their control include snow volume and frequency, equipment break

downs and availability of outside contractors to assist when major storms occur.

As front line service staff, they can sometimes take the brunt of drivers’ frustrations. We cannot build our community up while tearing the people who work for it down. Constructive criticism, concerns and suggestions are always welcome and used by council and management to learn from, to improve service and to develop action plans.

It is important to remember though, that the Town of Blackfalds, in its role as both an employer and a service provider, will operate in an atmosphere of mutual respect and consideration.

Even when the different stakeholders disagree, the debate and the process of finding solutions needs to remain civil.

This year is and will continue to be an exciting year for Blackfalds.

On behalf of council, I welcome each and every new employee to our town with a smile and look forward to their contribution.

I thank each and every existing employee for the work they have done to move Blackfalds forward.

Local colleges forge partnership in support of nursing BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Last month, Canadian University College (CUC) and Red Deer College (RDC) signed an agreement that will allow up to eight CUC students to pursue a degree in nursing through the program at RDC. Mark Haynal, president of CUC, said he expects the arrangement to be beneficial on a number of levels.

“It seems to meet a number of needs, it does a number of good things all at once.”

Haynal added CUC has long wanted to have its own nursing program. But, since CUC has been unable to do so, a way was found to still offer that program to CUC students.

Because RDC already had a nursing program, CUC approached them to see if they could contract with the other institutions and have RDC train some of CUC’s students each year, said Haynal.

He added that this was also in line with the wishes of Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education.

In 2002, Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education introduced Campus Alberta, an initiative encouraging postsecondary institutions within the province to collaborate as a way to more efficiently fund programs. This new partnership was inspired by that initiative, a press release from CUC stated.

Joel Ward, president of RDC, said that the agreement is a demonstration of exactly that kind of collaboration.

“This agreement is an excellent example

of the collaboration that’s possible between post-secondary institutions in the province,” Ward said.

“We’re always striving to create the learning experience that fits each students’ needs and CUC came to us.”

The new program targets students who would typically opt for a faith-based education, but are interested in nursing. Haynal said that no post-secondary Seventh-Day Adventist school in Canada offers a nursing program and this partnership is a way to amend that.

Haynal added that this arrangement is significant also because the Seventh Day Adventist Church has a long history of being involved in medical work.

“Helping people be healthy is a huge part of what we want to accomplish,” said Haynal, adding that the nursing program was a great fit for both the academic and religious sides of the institution.

“This was a natural addition to the services we offer students,” said Haynal.

Through this agreement, which officially comes into effect on March 1, RDC will be adding eight seats to its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program to be filled by CUC students.

Students wishing to take advantage of the partnership will first apply to CUC and upon being accepted are eligible to enter the competitive entry process for Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at RDC. Students accepted will commute to Red Deer in order to attend their classes at RDC campus and will not have classes at the CUC campus, said Haynal.

Blackfalds Winterfest set for this month

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Winterfest returns to Blackfalds on Feb. 17 and promises to be a fun-filled festival for the family to enjoy together.

Organizers Miranda Cooper and Sue Penner said the event has evolved somewhat but has always been a popular destination for the families around during the February long weekend.

“It’s a fun event to take your whole family to,” said Cooper.

Winterfest activities begin at noon on Feb. 17 with another sneak peek of Blackfalds’ newest facility, the Abbey Centre which is set to open March 17. Also at noon is the Blackfalds Fire Department barbeque.

This year’s Winterfest will also see the return of a favourite event, the Penguin Dip. Penner said the fund-

“When we didn’t have it last year, it was the thing everyone missed the most.”

For the adventurous dippers, a pool will be built outside for them to enjoy a brief splash in the sub-zero weather before heading to a hot tub to warm up.

Cooper said the event is her favourite of the festival and she is hoping to see a few more than the current 10 dippers register before the Feb. 10 deadline.

Penner said the Dip was started as a fundraiser for particular charities. Now, dippers choose the charity of their choice to donate funds to.

Emergency crews from the fire department will be on hand at the Dip in case anything goes wrong. Cooper said the event also gives firefighters a chance to practice working in winter water environments.

Another favourite activity is the Snow Slide. Penner said this activity was added last year and proved to be very popular and so has

been expanded this year.

She added the slide will also be useable for some time after the festival.

Ice sculpting demonstrations, door prizes, bingo and other activities will also be part of Winterfest.

Penner said that her favourite event each year is the Loonie Dig where children dig in piles of snow for tokens and exchange them for loonies.

Penner said that the Town of Blackfalds began hosting Winterfest in 2008 as a way to support Family Day. She added that the Town already had Blackfalds Days and Summerfest and a winter festival was something Blackfalds was lacking. Forecasts are known to change, but current weather reports predict that weather will be good for Winterfest, between -2C and -10C. In any case, dress appropriately for winter conditions and layer up if you plan on partaking in the event.

Winterfest is also a way to promote families spending time together outside, even in the bitter cold of winter. Penner said that

ARTS & LEISURE Melrose Randell enjoys decades of teaching music

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Like any part of the body, the human voice can be trained.

It’s something not a lot of people realize, but something Lacombe voice instructor Melrose Randell has been doing for most of her life. Randell said she never expected she would have her own private music studio, but today instructing music is something she enjoys immensely.

“I enjoy so much about teaching. I enjoy, I think, every aspect of it.”

For Randell, music was always more of a hobby than a profession. Although she is now semi-retired, teaching music is something she continues to do as it gives her pleasure.

“I just feel like I’m doing something very meaningful when I teach singing and it gives me a lot of joy at this point in my life.”

Born in Jamaica, Randell grew up in a culture deeply immersed in music. As such, Randell started singing from a very young age.

“In Jamaica, music is very important.”

While Randell enjoyed singing, she never imagined that she would grow up to become a voice teacher. She had no visions of pursuing any kind of career in music, but sang simply because it was what people did.

As an adult, Randell studied music in addition to pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English, but only as a hobby. Instead of music, she decided on a career in education.

While music was only a hobby to her, Randell did enjoy singing and wanted to take it as far as she could. Therefore she took voice exams as part of her study and continued to advance her abilities.

After awhile, Randell found that she had taken her voice lessons as far as she could. So, she worked towards a diploma in music and took an exam to become a specialist in training the voice.

At that time, she was already teaching English at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. And as music was only a hobby, Randell never taught voice until she came to Canada and began teaching in Rocky Mountain House in 1976.

In 1980, she was living in Lacombe and teaching at what was then Camille J. Lerouge Catholic High School in Red Deer.

At that time, the school had no music choir or music program.

That discovery was a bit of a culture shock to Randell. Being from Jamaica, she had difficulty understanding how the school could have no music and she decided to remedy it, starting a choral program at the school in 1980.

Through her work with the choir, Randell gained a few voice students who would stay after school for extra help with their training. She said it was what really got her started as a music instructor.

When she retired from teaching in school in 1997, Randell looked for something to occupy herself with. She came up with the idea of having a more permanent studio and teaching music.

So, she set up a studio and started teaching. She taught in both Red Deer and Lacombe up until last year and now teaches solely in Lacombe.

As Randell still wants to enjoy her retirement, she only teaches three days a week, from Tuesday through Thursday.

However, she has many students and has very full days on the ones she does teach music.

The Three Musketeers takes over Red Deer stage

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Plenty of adventure and drama awaits audiences as Red Deer College theatre studies students gear up to unveil their rendition of The Three Musketeers.

The production opens this evening on the Arts Centre mainstage, with curtain at 7:30 p.m. Additional shows run Feb. 7-8 and 12-15. Weekend matinees are slated for Feb. 8th and 15th at 1 p.m.

Director Thomas Usher, RDC theatre performance and creation instructor, is conďŹ dent that the ‘youthful exuberance, impulsive romance and constant action’ in the play will appeal as much today as it did when it was originally written.

He directed a version of The Three Musketeers a few years back for Edmonton’s Stage Polaris. Preparation for that production included reading the lengthy Alexandre Dumas novel, which was actually written as a serial for a publication in France in 1844. “He eventually put the whole thing into a novel,

and then wrote a play version as well.�

Usher describes the production as always active, moving briskly from scene to scene. He also points to its melodramatic and romantic sensibilities. “There is lots of activity – lots of action to keep the audience aware and engaged.�

As to the plot, Paris is often considered the ‘City of Love’, but for d’Artagnan it’s the place to fulďŹ ll his dream of becoming a musketeer. With his sister, he sets off on an adventure ďŹ lled with all the dramatic twists and swashbuckling turns of a much-loved classic tale. “Every member of our cast has the chance to do a sword ďŹ ght along the way, so the women all get to show their ďŹ nesse with a blade as well.â€?

Usher said that when Dumas adapted his novel for the stage, he was very attentive to his audience. He wanted to entertain people living in the industrial age to help them escape the humdrum of their lives through an exciting story.

Joining the Musketeers - Athos, Porthos and Aramis – d’Artagnan races to defend the honour of the Queen of France against the evil Cardinal Richelieu.

It’s a story propelled by the enthusiasm and energy of young men and women who are driven by their ideals and the belief that the just are rewarded and the evil are punished. The tale’s enduring popularity rests on its foundation of those timeless and universal elements that are the bedrock of pretty much any classic. “It’s a romance, it’s all about love, it’s all about ďŹ ghting for the things you believe in and using the strength of youth to stand up for the weaker person.

It’s also about good overcoming evil – all of those great, romantic ideals that certainly came out of the period that Dumas wrote in. “It was also about 50 years after the French revolution, so they are trying to establish themselves with a strong, nationalistic pride.�

It’s certainly been an adventure in pulling such a grand tale together. The actors maneuver through 16 ďŹ ght sequences in the production.

The rapier blades used in the play are on loan from Vancouver and after the show, they will head north to Edmonton for the Citadel’s production of Romeo and Juliet.

Usher brought in Calgary-based Laryssa Yanchuk – the ďŹ rst female certiďŹ ed ďŹ ght director in Canada -- to help out in sword ďŹ ghting sequences and choreography as well, he said. “With actors on a very dynamic stage in so many ďŹ ght sequences, this story makes for a thrilling night of theatre,â€? said Usher. “It’s been really cool to have her onboard,â€? he said.

Actors team up in Escape Plan The movie Escape Plan is a compelling movie about Ray Breslin, played by Sylvester Stallone, a man who can break out of any prison designed by man. Ray and his partner Lester run Breslin and Clark Consultants as the world’s foremost experts for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

CAMERON Their job is to test the efďŹ ciency and the ‘escapability’ of America’s secure prisons. Ray has broken out of 14 of these high security prisons and is now looking to retire but Lester convinces him to do one more job.

They are approached by the C.I.A with a unique job proposal that comes with a $5 million payday. The job is for Ray to successfully escape a newly developed prison whose location, for the purpose of secrecy, is completely off the grid.

When Ray and his team go to the pickup point a tracking device is placed in Ray’s shoulder so they could keep track of him. But Ray is grabbed, drugged, and the tracking device is removed. He

is then transported to the ultra high tech prison called ‘The Tomb’.

Soon after his arrival, Ray learns that the Warden Hobbs does not care about the well being of its inmates. Hobbs tells Ray he is never getting out, even after Ray gives the warden his safety code word. Ray then realizes that he has been deceived and has even more reasons to get out of the prison. The Warden Hobbs and his guards don’t hesitate to use extreme brutality towards the prisoners to get them to follow their commands to keep them completely obedient.

After spending the ďŹ rst few days of living in a suspended glass box observing the routines of the guards and not trusting anyone, Ray soon realizes the dark secrets of the prison and calls upon the aid of fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer, played

by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Escape Plan is a movie that is full of compelling drama and is a non-stop roller coaster of an action packed thrill ride starring two of Hollywood’s biggest action heros, Stallone (Rocky, Grudge Match) and Schwarzenegger (Terminator, Last Stand).

It also stars Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson and Amy Ryan. This movie has a lot of twists and turns that will not disappoint.

SPORTS Knights smash Trojans in high energy game

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express This past Monday, the Central Alberta Christian High School Knights defeated the Delburne Trojans by a large margin of 64 – 42.

Coach Veronica Den Oudsten said she has been impressed with the work ethic of her team recently and their ability to be aggressive. She said these are keys to the Knights having positive outcomes to their games.

“That’s when we are successful, when we are dictating the style of play.”

Den Oudsten went on to say the Knights are strongest when able to work together and find their advantage over opposing teams. She said the style of play will change depending on what that advantage

is. The most important things are effort and teamwork.

“I think the success of any team is based on all your players being able to contribute,” said Den Oudsten.

Showing their dominance early in the game on Monday, the Knights established a strong lead even in the first quarter.

Throughout the first half, CACHS dictated the style of play and controlled the court to keep the ball in their hands.

When the Knights did lose control of the ball, a high-pressure defense was quick to get it back and prevent the Trojans from shooting. Even when Delburne did manage to get shots off, CACHS did its best to prevent them from making it to the net.

In the second half, the Knights continued to use short passes and movement to control the game and stay ahead of Del-

burne and even extend their lead.

Even in the final quarter, where the Trojans started to put stronger pressure on the Knights and began to catch up to CACHS, the strong insurance policy the Knights had earned earlier in the game allowed them to easily stay ahead of the Trojans. Although Delburne scored more often than CACHS in the final quarter, the score gap was too big for them to close it in time and the Knights won the game 64 – 42.

Den Oudsten said the Knights’ hard work, particularly in the first half of the game, is what led them to victory. She said that the team has bought into the idea that hard work equals success and as such she has seen improvement in CACHS’ game.

While Den Oudsten was a little disappointed that the team did not perform as well in the second half of the game, she

said that part of the reason for that may have been the different lineups she was trying because of the strong lead. She added that she was never concerned about losing the lead. “I felt we had control of the game the whole way.”

Den Oudsten said she knows it is difficult to keep up a high calibre of play when winning, especially by large margins.

However, she added that gaining an ability to maintain consistency will serve the Knights well in the future.

“To me, that is the key of becoming successful later on in the season.”

For the most part, Den Oudsten said the was pleased with the Knights’ progress. She said they still have some things to work on but the players are showing an effort. news@lacombeexpress.com

Cale Kooyman headed to Alberta Winter Games

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express One volleyball player has proven that age isn’t everything.

Cale Kooyman, 13, is one of the younger players selected to play on the Zone 4 volleyball team for this year’s Alberta Winter Games in Banff and Canmore.

Kooyman said that, above all, he excited to be on the team and is looking forward to the whole experience of participating in the Games.

“I think I’m most excited for being (part) of a team,” said Kooyman, who has already left for the Games which begin today.

Kooyman started playing volleyball last year for Lacombe Christian School. He said he enjoys the teamwork aspect of the sport and being part of that team.

Typically, Kooyman plays as a setter.

However, for the Winter Games he will be switching position to right side. He added he believes the change will help him become a stronger player and more completely develop his skills in volleyball.

After hearing about this year’s Games from his coach, Kooyman decided to try out for the volleyball team. He added that he also had knowledge of the Games from his older brother Aiden, who had participated in a previous Alberta Winter Games.

At the tryouts, Cale was a little intimidated. He said that because he knew he was one of the younger players trying out there would be many other players with more experience than him and he thought his chances of making the team were somewhat slim.

“I was very nervous. There were like 30 people there and only 12 could make the team.”

Cale’s mother Vivian on the other hand was not nervous for her son. In fact, she said she thought his chances of making the team were quite strong.

“I’m confident in his skill level,” said Vivian, adding that her son has had strong coaching so far in his volleyball career and therefore has a solid skill set for the game.

While coaches at the tryouts did not share their reasons for selecting Cale with him, Vivian said that she was told it was because of that strong skill set and Cale being a well-balanced, all-around player.

Towards the end of the tryouts, Cale got a little more comfortable, but was still quite nervous, he said. Luckily, his anxieties were quickly put to rest. As soon as the tryouts were done, he found out he made the team.

“I was excited to be a part of it, because I was really hoping for it, to be part of the

team,” said Cale. He added that he was also excited to be playing in the older U15 age group with a higher level of competition and intensity.

At 13, Cale will be playing in an age division higher than what is normal at the Alberta Winter Games. He will also be playing with a new set of teammates.

Luckily, Cale and the rest of his team have had the opportunity to practice prior to playing at the games. He added that while he is new to the group, a lot of the other players have already played together and should function well as a unit.

Although Cale is younger than most of the players he will be playing with and against at the Alberta Winter Games, he said that he has some experience playing older players and is confident he can compete at their level. news@lacombeexpress.com

Good times at memorial game

On Feb. 1, Blackfalds Minor Hockey held the 10th annual Cody Dennis Memorial Hockey Game at the Blackfalds Multiplex.

Just prior to singing the national anthem, players and fans observed a mo-

ment of silence to remember another hockey player whose life hade been cut short. Damian Pannenbecker, the man who died in a crash near Olds last month was remembered.

For the first period of the game, the 1998-1999 Bantam Bulldogs faced off against the Bantam Pee Wee Bulldogs.

While the young pee wee players were faced with

opponents much larger and much more experienced than themselves, they made short work of the memorial team, winning the period 6 – 0.

After the first intermission, the score was reset and the memorial team got a sound 8 – 3 thrashing by the Blackfalds Minor Hockey coaches and officials. news@lacombeexpress.com

Staying realistic in your home choices I have the cutest picture hanging by my desk at work. It was taken in Canmore and it shows a little bear cub peeking over the top of a tall fence. His little furry toes are perfectly pointed as he braces himself staring longingly at whatever is on the other side of that fence. Besides the photo being adorable it reminds me of how often I peer over that fence to see if the grass is really greener on the other side.

Realistically I know that it isn’t, my logic tells me that I have everything I need in my life and that my efforts should be geared towards gratitude and not climbing that fence again. As you can imagine, I see a mountain of homes every year both large and small – mansions and basements all have owners who dream of their perfect interiors. I would be lying if I said that I have never wished for a bigger kitchen or envied a walk through pantry while doing a new home measure and I find myself peeking

over that fence again. To be completely truthful, I am quite intimidated to build my own home. My fear of unleashing that beast within me is a powerful de-motivator whenever I find myself wishing for this dream kitchen or that luxe ensuite bathroom. I always joke that I can’t afford myself and it’s true! My dream list would include a lot of extras.

Budgets and banks prevail and give most people a sharp dose of reality and I often meet with clients a second and third time as they hone down their choices to align with their budgets. The good news is there is usually a beautiful compromise available to still help you achieve the look you desire. It is perfectly ok to have desires but it is also a good practice to ask yourself why - why do I want this? Why does this appeal to me? Why am I willing to go further into debt to possess this item? It is

a good practice to give yourself a 24-point inspection before any major purchase, be very honest with yourself as to why you are diving into this end of the pool. If you have asked yourself the questions and still find yourself wanting/needing then nothing will stop you but you might come away with a clearer understanding of yourself and a deeper appreciation for what you have just purchased.

Peeking over the fence is alright as long as it doesn’t distract or deter you from your realistic goals. Putting all of your hopes and dreams on a borrowed enviable element may become a huge letdown when the final outcome is revealed. If you are choosing product based on your dreams and realities your finished product will be far more satisfying.
