A Cariboo delegation is in Ottawa this week promoting the New Prosperity Gold-Copper Mine project.

“We want to try to educate the politicians there that there is a lot of support for the mine to move forward,” Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce president Jason Ryll said. “What they are hearing in the media from the opponents is not the only case and in fact, at times, it’s far from the truth.”

Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett, Ervin Charleyboy, Len Doucette, Walt Cobb, Nick Christianson, Ken Greenall and Alan Roberts are also part of the delegation.

The group will meet with parliamentary secretaries and the Conservative caucus on Wednesday and Thursday morning. Minister of the Environment Leona Aglukkaq has until the end of February to issue a decision statement about the mine.

There is a lot of “silent” support for New Prosperity from the people in the community, from investors in the community and around the province, Ryll said.

“There’s a lot riding on the mine and the project moving forward, not only from a local perspective, when it comes to the people it can employ, but the larger perspective of investment in B.C.”

NEWS Social media expert to visit lakecity next week Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Youth have become broadcasters of information without a lot of understanding of the power that comes with it, social media consultant Jesse Miller said Monday.

Miller will be visiting schools in Williams Lake to talk to students and to give a public evening presentation on Feb. 11.

“I will talk to the kids about the ways they are using social media,” Miller said during a media teleconference Monday.

“I’m hoping they will grasp that as you build online you can actually use social media for a number of amazing tools to connect with the world, share stories and help shape community development in

a positive way.”

Unfortunately social media is abused and can start to have a negative impact on communities, as seen recently in the Kamloops school district, or with Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons who both committed suicide, Miller said.

When Miller talks with adults, the message isn’t about trying to get ahead of their kids, but about the benefits of the technology and how to engage with their children in a positive way.

“A lot of parents come up and say ‘my kids are so good at this’ how am I going to keep up?” he said. “It’s not about keeping up, it’s about being able to reflect on your own life experiences and applying the technology the kids are using today to

Parents need to put themselves in their children’s shoes and ask if they had the ability to take a picture of themselves or say things negatively about kids they didn’t get along with in high school how would they use modern technology, Miller said.

School District 27 superintendent Mark Thiessen said the most intimidating thing for parents is not being able to keep track of everything their kids are doing.

“Is it about having a conversation with your kids and knowing what they are up to, rather than keeping up with them?” he asked.

Miller said parents need to become co-pilots with their kids.

“Parents have to learn to become com-

municators as it applies to the technology,” he said. “The day my daughter takes an interest in a sport that I’m not interested in I should learn as much about that sport so I can nurture my child’s engagement. It’s like that.”

When Miller was in Williams Lake in May 2012, the students were riveted, Lake City secondary principal Gregg Gaylord recalled.

“I’ve never seen a student assembly so silent and engaged to that extent,” he said.

“It was his presentation and the nature of what he was talking about because it’s so relevant.”

The public session will take place at the Williams Lake Campus, Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

City staff recommend option one Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Williams Lake city staff recommended council approve moving forward with Option One to relocate the intersection at Carson Drive and Highway 97 to Toop Road and 11th Avenue.

In a report council received at its committee of the whole meeting Tuesday, engineering technologist Jeff Bernardy said if council directs staff to proceed the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will

complete the 50 per cent detailed design by the end of February.

“MOTI is also drafting a cost-sharing agreement for the various components of the project, with negotiations scheduled to begin midFebruary,” Bernardy noted.

“Also, upon council’s approval, MOTI will initiate property acquisition.”

Bernardy said the new configuration essentially keeps traffic patterns the way they are today, but will improve safety at Toop,

improve intersection highway grades, permit truck traffic access to commercial properties and have lower property impacts compared to other options.

“Even with the new light location, it is expected that traffic will use the same routes and patterns as today,” Bernardy said.

The report also analyzed a citizen committee design concept featuring an overpass, underpass, and roundabouts at Toop Road and did not recommend the concept for the location.

“In summary, the interchange concept as presented does have merit strictly from a highway mobility perspective, but presents severe disadvantages to city network access,” the report noted. “Given the existing terrain, constructing the interchange with the two roundabouts will have large impacts to the neighbouring properties and would require significant property acquisition.”

At its Jan. 14 regular meeting, council directed staff to prepare a report on Option One.

Masked suspects attempt robbery Three young males with a large knife attempted to rob a cold beer and wine store in Williams Lake Thursday evening.

On Jan. 30, around 8 p.m. three young males entered the Coast Fraser Cold Beer and Wine Store at 245 Donald Road, attempting to rob the store, RCMP said.

“One male was described as approximately six foot tall and skinny, the other two males

were shorter and skinny as well,” RCMP noted in a press release.

“All three males had their faces concealed with bandannas, were wearing dark clothing, and fled the scene after being scared off by the staff.”

Anyone with information on the attempted robbery is asked to call the Williams Lake RCMP at 250-392-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-88-222TIPS (8477).

Family thankful for the help Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer A snowed-in family living in the Chilcotin Military Training Area is getting in and out, thanks to the generosity of Interior Roads.

Susanne Peter, her husband Jim, and son Colton, 10, were snowed in for more than a month when Interior Roads came to the rescue.

“We knew that Interior Roads had to plow up to their gravel pit anyways so they decided to help us out of their kindness of their hearts and for Colton,” Susanne Peter said Monday.

Interior Roads plowed 47 kilometres in all of the Strouse Lake Road and the new access road National Defence put in for the Peters in November.

“We want to thank Charlie Hutchins, Ken Dyck, Chuck Mernett and Robin the nice secretary,” Peter said.

It took Interior Roads three days and would have been a huge bill if they had been charged, Peter added.

Instead of returning to Chilcotin Road elementary school, Colton is now enrolled at the Graduating Routes in Other Ways (GROW).

“The road is too long to travel every day to

the bus for him,” Peter said. “We will have to see about the road access for his future schooling.”

Colton is also able to

attend therapy sessions at the Child Development Centre in Williams Lake, she added.

s it OK for a provincial government to flout the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?

Justice Susan Griffin says it is not. Hopefully ending a 12-year dispute over B.C. legislation that took away teachers’ rights to bargain on issues such as class size and composition. Madam Justice Griffin said (for the second time) that the provincial law is unconstitutional and has been invalid since it was enacted.

She said the province bargained in bad French faith and must Connection pay the B.C. Diana French teacher’s union $2 million in damages.

There are two issues here. First, it is frightening that a provincial government has to be challenged in court for thinking it is above Canadian laws. Secondly, what about the children who were hurt most by the legislation? As a once-upon-a-time teacher who has had children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren in the public school system for mega years, I don’t understand how anyone with half a brain doesn’t get it — that the bigger the classes the less time teachers have for individual students.

To quote the Victoria Times Colonist, by literally forcing larger classes, the province threw students “under the bus” for the last decade.

Premier Clark introduced this legislation in 2002 when she was Education Minister.

Let’s hope she forgoes what appears to be a vendetta against teachers, and focusses instead on making sure all public school students have the best possible education.

Like it or not, teachers are the front line in the education system. If that means Ms. Clark has to eat crow and have her education minister listen to them, so be it.

Another disturbing issue is the Education Ministry’s proposed curriculum changes that could impact local school programs like Waterwise, Wastewise, Salmon in the Classroom and popular programs at the Gavin Lake Outdoor school.

More on this when I hear back from our local school board.

They are no stranger to the risks of rapid price changes of their livestock, and through the years have found ways to keep the lights and heat on in the house, and food on the kitchen table for their family.

However, it has become more and more difficult dealing with the swings in commodity prices in recent years, as MLA the unpredictable global economy Musings recovers from the Donna Barnett 2008 financial crisis. Producers throughout Western Canada now have a new pilot program that will provide new risk management tools for cattle and hog producers through the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP).

Over the next four years, producers can manage their risk through the purchase of insurance coverage in the case of declines in livestock prices, yet still take advantage of favourable market conditions should prices rise. Premiums are paid by producers, and co-operation between BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Federal Government will help create efficiencies and find the best practices in delivering this new program.

I was happy to attend the unveiling of this program in Camrose, Alberta as Parliamentary Secretary for Rural Development and on behalf of my colleague, Minister of Agriculture Pat Pimm. While a similar program has existed in Alberta since 2009, this expansion to Western Canadian producers will ensure they can focus on the long-term management of their operations, rather than dealing short-term price shocks.

More than 50 log trucks gather Saturday morning to pay tribute with a truckers’ parade to log truck driver Ron Bliss, who died suddenly last month.

Truck driver honoured The tight-knit trucking community paid tribute to one of its own Saturday.

More than 50 log trucks polished to perfection made their way from Westline Harvesting Ltd. in the new industrial section and along Mackenzie Avenue, horns honking, in a show of respect for fellow trucker Ron Bliss, who died suddenly last month.

Bliss worked for Clusko Logging for the past 22 years and is one of only a handful of men to receive the special honour.

“It’s not often you get a parade,” said truck mechanic Adrian Coupal, a friend and co-worker at Clusko who knew Bliss since he started working in the industry.

“Ron was well-liked — a really good guy.

“We called him our big teddy bear.”

Bliss’s casket was at the head of the trucker’s parade, being carried by a restored 1978 Kenworth LW owned by Clusko while someone followed directly behind in Bliss’s everyday work truck.

Following them were trucks and drivers representing many local companies,

including Clusko, Westline, Longhorn, Eldorado, Gen 4 and San José trucking and even trucks from out of town.

Coupal said the logging truck industry has changed in many ways over the years but one thing that remains the same is the deep sense of camaraderie amongst drivers.

He said Bliss was always the first to greet other drivers on his daily travels and, back in the day, enjoyed gathering with other drivers Friday afternoons over a ‘black pop.’

The first local driver to receive a trucker’s parade was Walt Hardy in 1987, and the most recent was Earl Adolph last year.

The parade was organized by Westline Harvesting supervisor Troy Bremner, who began his career working alongside Bliss as a teenager.

Although it is a devastating loss, it is nice to see our community so touched by a colleague and friend that they’re willing to honour him with such a moving tribute.

Road needs a facelift Editor:

One of the many questions often asked about the Bella Coola Hill is what exactly is the concern, regarding the 18.5 kilometres between the “Foot of the Hill” and “Heckman Pass?”

Many of us that have driven, as in my case 57 years over this section of the road, we think the road is so improved from our starting days, that for us there is no challenge.

I recall one of my first trips down this road in my 1953 Buick with top of the line automatic transmission.

That car from the factory had absolutely no transmission holdback, with four adults in our vehicle we came down that hill like a shooting arrow, uncomfortably fast and on brakes alone, and boy with no brake pedal left, were those brakes smoking.

20 years later, now with a half ton truck with a three speed standard transmission, towing a trailer loaded with a ton of building supplies.

It was crazy getting through the twists and turns, but the slowest I could go it seemed was 30 miles an hour.

Again, the electric brakes of the trailer had packed up and had gone in some other direction.

Another time Mary and I came down the hill in fog so dense, she was hanging out one window screaming at me that I was too close, while I sweated that I might go over the edge.

And yet another time in winter, a two-foot diametre boulder came bouncing down the slope nailing my truck on the right front fender before I could get stopped.

As regular users of the road we forget those times as we dash up and down the mountain like

National Geographic monkeys on telephone wires.

We forget that people with no experience in driving this road are facing the exact same challenges that we once faced, and that we have long since forgotten.

As a business person, there is a saying: “word of mouth advertising is the best advertising.”

Almost 900 signatures on a petition — so many said that the road scared the devil right out of them; some said they would never travel the road again.

I believe that this kind negative advertising has allowed the ferry service to be cancelled.

The road does not meet Safe National Highway Standards, without question, we need to fix that.

In October 2013 Prime Minister Harper signed a deal in principle with the European Union.

This Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) must yet be ratified by the Canadian Parliament, by the European Union Parliament and by the 28 member states of the EU. B.C. needs to sell its resources for a prosperous economy. The Cariboo would like to see continued markets for its timber products and for its beef.

While the annual

quota for Canadian beef might rise to 65,000 tonnes (up from 15,000) if the agreement is fully implemented, the EU expects an annual gain of $16.3 billion in GDPs out of this deal. Someone is going to pay.

The CETA is a new kind of trade agreement. It seeks to remove any regulations shielding domestic markets from international competition. This is signalled by the EU’s projection of $700 million in annual tariff savings and what Canada would lose in duties.

The CETA would provide European

companies with opportunities to bid on government procurement opportunities and prevent provincial and municipal governments or Crown corporations from including social, economic or environmental requirements on these purchasing contracts.

If the CETA is ratified and if Site C is approved it is entirely possible that the project could be done by a Spanish or a Polish corporation. Is that a good possibility for the B.C. economy?

Canadians, particularly seniors, rely heavily on generic pharma-

ceuticals.

European negotiators, representing large drug companies, want automatic patent term renewal if the patent renewal process goes on — in their view — for too long. They want five more years added to the end of patents and the right to appeal decisions that would allow competing generic drugs to enter the market. Several provinces have protested, but the negotiations are being conducted by the federal government.

Informed politicians have become concerned to the extent that more than 40 jurisdictions

across Canada have requested exemption from the terms of the CETA. In the Cariboo there has been silence from federal, provincial and municipal politicians.

It is the responsibility of every taxpayer and citizen to ask of every one of these politicians “What do you know about the CETA? And what are you doing to protect the interests of your voters from potentially unfair international competition?”

Bennett has no business lobbying for mine Editor: B.C. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett has been to Ottawa twice in the last two months lobbying for New Prosperity Mine.

Is he telling the federal government to disregard the environmental science that says the mine at Fish Lake (Teztan Biny) is a bad idea?

Is he telling the federal government to disregard the findings of the independent panel of mining professionals and the assessments by esteemed scientists from around the world who are saying the proposed mine will have significant environmental and cultural impacts that can’t be mitigated.

Bennett says he went to Ottawa to make sure the federal ministers were aware of the facts of the project.

Yet Bennett doesn’t have his own facts straight. He says New Prosperity is just a normal open pit mine like all the other mines in B.C., and that it could

be built in an environmentally responsible way.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Bennett is wrong that New Prosperity is normal. The proposed mine will turn Fish Lake into an aquarium, relying on pumps in perpetuity to circulate the water.

No project in the world, let alone B.C., has ever attempted anything like this on such a large scale. Ever.

A top aquatic scientist from UBC told the panel that Fish Lake would be dead within 10 years, even with the pump circulation system. Bennett’s head seems firmly planted in the sand. He says he can’t understand why the federal panel ruled there is a likelihood of significant environmental impacts on Fish Lake.

Maybe he should read the panel report and quit trying to spin it. Maybe he should have attended the hearings like many of us did, so he could speak factually on the issues.

It seems that New Prosperity is a pipe dream in Mr. Bennett’s mind.

He is heavy on platitudes and rhetoric saying the mine “could” be built in an environmentally responsible way, yet when shown the facts and details of the environmental science that shows it can’t be, he is quick to look the other way. It’s a sham when economic inter-

ests overrule the environmental science in an environmental review process.

No wonder environments around the world are going to hell in a hand basket. Let’s hope that Federal Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq does the right thing and rules against this New Prosperity proposal, and isn’t bullied by corporate interests and small-minded

NEWS Truck driver retires after decade Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer It’s the end of an era truck driver Les Hounslow said sitting in his “office.”

After 10 years and nine months of hauling freight from Cache Creek to Williams Lake five days a week, Hounslow retired Friday, Jan. 31.

Describing himself as a “lean, mean freight machine,” the Kamloops native said he’s enjoyed the work.

“Words cannot describe my customers and friends here in Williams Lake,” he said.

One person who stands out is the late Elmer Kennedy.

Every day Hounslow grabbed a coffee at Tim Hortons on Highway 97 and on the very first day Kennedy greeted Hounslow with a nod.

“It grew to a couple of nods and within two weeks we knew each

Before heading out to from Williams Lake Hounslow said he’s the little guy that never said no.

So far he doesn’t have any firm retirement plans, except to be home for dinner time.

“I don’t think I’ve had supper on time at home in the last eight years,” he said.

Your Preschooler and… Play Play is the “work” of children. Most of your child’s early learning takes place through play. Through play, your preschooler will explore and discover the world and his or her role in it. In playing, your preschooler is having fun which can nurture a love for learning. By providing a variety of different play activities and exposing your child to different types of situations, you will be sure the brain receives the stimulation it needs to thrive.

Typically, a child of three will engage in imaginary play, tell stories and create characters. Your preschooler will play alone most of the time, but may be increasingly able to play with others. A sense of ownership may be developing. At age three, children can typically throw, catch, and kick a ball as well as pedal a tricycle – be sure your child wears an approved and well-fitting helmet whenever on a tricycle. Many three-yearolds will have the hand-eye coordination to try more complex activities.

Try some of these with your preschooler: 1. Family members are your child’s favourite playmates.

Make time to laugh and play together. Make play a part of the things you do with your child every day. Enjoy!

2. Balance your child’s schedule. It is important that your child have access to both structured activities and free playtime.

3. Keep a variety of books and odds and ends from around the home on hand for down times. If you have them in your home, puzzles or art supplies can be enjoyable. Rotating toys allows your child to experience something new.

4. For imaginative playtime, have some of your old clothes for “dress up” and have every day objects that will allow your child to create his or her own “pretend” stories. Clothes and shoes with different openings are good to practice lacing, zippering, buttoning and tying.

5. Pretend along with your child. Encourage the imagination. At a make-believe tea party, ask: “Is your cup of tea too hot?”

6. Provide opportunities for your child to make personal choices about play activities. Decision making will increase your child’s sense of confidence and enjoyment.

7. Set up opportunities for your child to be messy with glue, fl our and water playdough, water or paint. Encourage your child’s creativity by proudly displaying their creations.

8. Play outside. Encourage your child to delight in some fresh air and fun activities like playing in the garden or at the park.

9. Use bean balls or bags to play throwing and catching games with your child. These can be made at home by sewing up scraps of cloth with dried beans or peas inside.

H1N1 flu virus confirmed in the Interior Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer There have been 60 lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 in the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap, Interior Health senior medical office Dr. Andrew Larder told the Tribune Tuesday.

“We have been doing surveillance since the beginning of September and from then until the end of January there have been 60 lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 in the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap region,” Larder said.

“The lab-confirmed cases represent the tip of the iceberg when it comes to influenza activity.”

During the peak of the flu season — mid to the end of January — the provincial government tracks the proportion of doctor’s visits that are due to flu-like illness, Larder said.

In Interior Health during the last two weeks of January, less than one per cent of the visits to doctors were by people with flu-like symptoms.

Influenza is a respiratory infection with typical symptoms being a fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, watery eyes, muscle aches and pains.

“Most people will deal with the infection.

It will be a miserable week or so, but they will recover,” Larder said.

Influenza normally lasts seven to 10 days so if it persists beyond that it could mean a secondary infection and possibly time to check in with a doctor, he added.

There have been three deaths of people within Interior Health who had lab-confirmed influenza.

A woman in her 50s died in the Okanagan in December and two people died in January.

“There was a man in his 30s from the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap who died in mid January and a female in her 70s from the Okanagan who died the last week of January,” Larder said.

Larder was not able to disclose further details of the deaths, however, said the province’s surveillance of H1N1related deaths has

shown more than 90 per cent of the H1N1 deaths occurred in people with underlying

conditions.

“In that respect, it’s typical flu,” Larder said.

“It tends to effect people with underlying medical conditions much more severely.”

Another shipment of flu vaccines will be distributed to doctors offices and pharmacists

this week.

“The public health units have always had vaccines through the

season, but it’s been a bit limited and in short supply to some extent,” he said.

Based on the feedback I have received about the column on murder and mayhem at Mile 108, it would appear many Cariboo residents enjoy the sordid side of history.

With that in mind, today’s article deals with Boone Helm, a notorious criminal who frequented the gold fields in 1862, and was responsible for three murders on the trail between Keithley Creek and Quesnel Forks.

Helm was born in Kentucky in 1828, and moved to a new border settlement in Missouri when he was very young. He grew up to be a real juvenile delinquent, delighting in rowdyism and fighting.

He was a very strong youth, and also a frequent consumer of liquor, which only served to make him meaner and more out of control.

In his mid teens Helm had burned so many bridges in his town that he had to leave. A neighbour and friends likely in order to pacify Helm during a drinking session, had promised to accompany him to California.

When Helm found out that the friend really had no intention of going with him, he stabbed him with a bowie knife and the friend died instantly.

Helm fled west.

The friend’s brother and some of his friends pursued Helm and tracked him down. He was brought back for trial, and was convicted of murder, but his conduct while in confinement was so bizarre that, in the words of the court, “His manner was not only unbecoming, but unbalanced.”

After his conviction, on the advice of physicians, he was committed to a lunatic asylum, from which he eventually escaped and fled to California.

There, in 1858 and early 1859 he killed several men, but before he could be arrested he fled north to the Oregon Territory.

In the winter months Helm was not above resorting to can-

nibalism for a meat supply, and soon he became known as the “Kentucky Cannibal.”

He made is way over to Salt Lake City, where he was again driven out of town because of his atrocious deeds, including murdering two men in cold blood.

By July of 1862 Helm had made his way up to the gold fields of the Cariboo. He was in Antler Creek, about 16 miles southeast of Barkerville, and he and another shady character were looking for some easy money.

They followed a fellow named Sokolosky and two French Canadian associates, who were carrying $32,000 in coarse gold and heading towards Quesnel Forks.

The men stopped at Keithley Creek where they had dinner, then set out on the trail again.

Helm and his partner were lying in wait.

They shot and killed all three men, buried most of the gold, and left the bodies at the side of the trail.

Then they headed quickly into Quesnel Forks, intending to come back for the gold after things had calmed down.

But it didn’t take

fatigue and hunger that it would have been impossible for him to have continued many hours longer.”

Upon being asked what had become of his companion, Helm replied: “Why, do you supposed that I’m fool enough to starve to death when I can help it? I ate him up, of course.”

The man who accompanied him was never seen or heard from again.

Helm was transported to Victoria, and from there to the jail at Port Townsend where he dug out under the wall and escaped to the Bannock, Montana area.

There, he teamed up with Henry Plummer, another well-known thief and murderer.

These men were tried in secret.

On Feb. 15, 1864, the Victoria Colonist reports: “Hung at Last — The notorious Boone Helm, who so long succeeded in escaping the ends of justice, has been lynched, with 12 others at Bannock Mines.”

If you go out to the graveyard at Quesnel Forks, you can still see the headboard for Sokolosky. It’s just outside the cemetery fence line, since because he was Jewish, he could not be buried in the cemetery proper.

As for the gold that Helm buried — it was never recovered.

long for the bodies to be discovered, and for the people of Quesnel Forks to figure out who was responsible.

Helm beat a hasty retreat away from the goldfields, with a posse on his tail. Somehow he eluded capture, and he reappeared in midOctober in Victoria, where the local newspaper, the Colonist, reported that “Boone Helm, represented as a bad character, was taken into custody … upon a charge of drinking at saloons without settling his score …”

Helm was brought before the Police Magistrate, where he was ordered to post a $90 security bond, but he defaulted and spent the next month building and repairing the streets of Victoria.

We next hear of Helm in the spring of 1863 where he was arrested at Fort Yale in the Fraser Canyon.

It is said that he was on his way back to the goldfields to recover the gold that he buried on the trail to Quesnel Forks.

A newspaper from Yale reports, “He was brought into the city last night strongly ironed … Helm’s conduct on the road is conclusive evidence that he was aware he was being pursued. He passed around the more populous settlements, or through them in the night time.

If not sidelined by a serious car accident three years ago Ruth and Jim Fraser would still be skiing.

At 87 and 86 respectively the Frasers may not ski again, but they continue to work hard on their recovery and still enjoy periodic visits to Mt. Timothy Ski Area, which they love.

In fact the Frasers were on their way to ski at Mt. Timothy three years ago when the vehicle they were passengers in was involved in an accident on black ice.

They both spent about six weeks in hospital recovering from fractured bones and other injuries. After returning home from hospital Jim also hit his head in a fall and suffered a stroke which has prolonged his recovery.

“We had wonderful care in hospital and have had lots of help since then,” Ruth says.

“We are not 100 per cent yet but we are doing well.”

They work on rebuilding their health with a determination one might see in people half their age.

In addition to other therapies they may receive, the couple has taken up yoga.

“The instructor we have is really knowledgeable and attentive,” Jim says.

“Physically I feel

great, I even got my driver’s license back.”

Ruth also leads fitness classes for residents at Glen Arbor.

She says she focuses on stretching, weight training and other mobility exercises which have helped in

her own recovery.

Any work with the legs, such as squats is really good for skiing, she adds.

“We try to keep mobile. At our age you tighten up pretty fast.”

Small changes can make a big difference to your heart health

(NC) More Canadians than ever are surviving heart attacks and strokes, even though these events are serious and can be lifethreatening.

In fact, the death rate from cardiovascular disease has declined more than 75 per cent over the past 60 years, and last year alone this resulted in 165,000 survivors. But there is still cause for concern.

According to a new report from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, not all survivors are able to make the healthy changes needed to make the best recovery possible and help avoid another event. Based on a poll of 2,000 survivors and their loved ones, survivors report success with eating healthier, quitting smoking, and reducing

alcohol consumption.

However, many survivors report that they struggle to maintain a healthy weight, to be physically active and to reduce stress.

“After going through a major event like a heart attack, it may be daunting to think about making many changes all at once,” says Dr. Beth Abramson, spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and author of Heart Health for Canadians.“What people don’t realize is that small changes over time can make a big difference.

This can be as simple as choosing a piece of fruit over a sugary or salty snack, or getting off the bus a few stops early to walk a bit more.”

Here are some tips that can help everyone – whether they are living

with cardiovascular disease or not – get started on a healthier path: Let the Food Guide guide you.

Follow Canada’s Food Guide and ensure that half your plate is vegetables, one quarter meat or alternatives such as beans, lentils or tofu, and one quarter grains such as rice or pasta. Add in a glass of milk or some yogurt and fruit.

Planning makes perfect.

Plan your meals each week and make a list before heading to the grocery store. Cook healthy meals in bigger batches and freeze them.

Accept all substitutes.

Use healthier fats, for example olive oil instead of butter. Use fresh or dried herbs, spices, fl avoured vinegars or lemon juice instead of salt to enhance

fl avour. In baking, cut down on the fat content by using fruit sauce and replace white fl our with whole wheat.

Find what moves you. No need to go to a gym, just do whatever you enjoy – any activity can have a positive impact. And remember, if you are pressed for time, you can work in activity in 10-minute bouts.

Jim, is also continuing his volunteer work with the Hough Memorial Foundation, which raises funds for cancer detection equipment at CMH. Ruth says she has had two bouts with cancer, and supports the Hough Memorial Foundation and local Cancer Society in their fundraising efforts.

While they aren’t skiing these days, the Frasers do enjoy staying connected to the community by attending events such as the recent Robbie Burns Night celebration at the legion, dinners at the Seniors’ Activity Centre and other events. The Frasers are currently working to set up an outing for seniors at Mt. Timothy Ski Area.

“It’s beautiful up there,” Ruth says.

Jim retired about 10 years ago in his mid70s. His career has been varied, including starting and running a service station and rental business for which Ruth kept the books, then becoming a real estate agent.

Through the years he also had a storied political and volunteer career starting with the community recreation commission, six years as a Williams Lake city councillor, six years as mayor, the CMH hospital board, the North Central Municipal Association (rising to president), and six years with the Union of B.C. Municipalities (also rising to president).

Over the years his volunteer efforts included work with the Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, Mount Timothy Ski Hill (five

years as president), and Winter Games vicepresident in 2002. He has volunteered with the Hough Memorial Cancer Society for 40 years since its inception in 1972 and currently serves as vice-president.

For his efforts he has been awarded Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship and Citizen of the Year award in 2004, a B.C. Achievement Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The Frasers raised their children, Colleen and Scott, in Williams Lake and now enjoy six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. While their recovery from the accident has been difficult the Frasers say they have had lots of help along the way.

“We’ve had wonderful support and sure appreciate all the help we have received,” Ruth says.

In December Ruth was honoured with a luncheon and plaque marking her 50th year of service with the Cariboo Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and is now looking forward to getting back into some active volunteering at the hospital.

Over the years she served as vice-president, treasurer, and corresponding secretary, but says for the most part she just enjoyed taking the service cart around to patients and working in the gift shop.

“It’s a fun job and you meet lots of people,” Ruth says in encouraging others to join the hospital auxiliary.

Heart healthy tips from TRU health clinic The new community health centre at Thompson Rivers University is not only a free and handy place to visit with Nurse Practitioner Sandi Lachappelle, but now provides a monthly newsletter on health tips.

The clinic’s second newsletter is now available at the clinic and on their new Facebook site.

The letter is researched and assembled by Lachappelle and nursing students at TRU as part of their practical work.

February is heart month.

Are you heart healthy?

“Today, heart disease and stroke take one life every seven minutes and 90 per cent of Canadians have at least one risk factor.” (Heart and Stroke Foundation, 2014).

The following increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke: • Being a Diabetic.

This is another topic, but if you are already diabetic, the most important thing you can do is make sure your blood sugar is

well-controlled. Talk to your primary care provider about this.

• Having high blood pressure. People of all ages should check their blood pressure regularly, and if it’s consistently high (140/90, have it treated).

• Smoking, No one should smoke. Period.

If you need help with this, come talk to the NP or your primary care provider.

• O b e s i t y.

Particularly if you carry extra weight around your abdomen. This puts you at higher risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some can-

cers.

How you can prevent the risk of heart attack or stoke.

• Eat more vegetables than anything else!

Vegetables and healthy proteins should make up the bulk of your daily diet.

• Switch out animal proteins for legumes such as chick peas and kidney beans once a week.

These are great sources of fibre and will help to lower your LDL cholesterol.

• Don’t avoid eggs.

Eggs are a good source of protein, and really don’t increase your cholesterol, despite some of the confusing

media out there.

• When you eat grains, always choose multigrain, and in particular oat bran, which helps lower that LDL cholesterol.

• Choose healthy fats. Everyone needs fat in their diet, and if you eat more fish, nuts, and vegetables fats such as avocados and olive oils, you’ll increase your HDL cholesterol, which is protective.

Limit your alcohol intake to 1-2 drinks per day for men, and one drink per day for women.

More than that can lead to an increase in blood pressure.

Shepherd's pie with garlic mashed potatoes Shepherd's pie is normally a rich family favourite. This recipe is just as tasty as the old favourites but modified for heart health.

1 lb (454g) yellow fleshed potatoes, peeled and chopped 6 cloves garlic 1 can (19 oz/540 mL) white kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1/2 cup (125 mL) skim milk, warmed 1 tsp (5 mL) canola oil 1 onion, chopped

1 carrot, chopped 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 pkg (450g) lean ground turkey 1 tsp (5 mL) dried thyme leaves 1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh ground pepper 2 tbsp (25 mL) all purpose flour 2 cups (500 mL) sodium reduced beef broth 1 tbsp (15 mL) tomato paste 2 tsp (10 mL) Worcestershire sauce 2 bay leaves

Directions Cover potatoes and garlic with water in a pot and bring to the boil.

Cook for about 15 minutes or until potatoes are very tender.

Add beans and return to the boil for 1 minute.

Drain well and return to pot. Using a potato masher, add milk and mash potatoes and beans until smooth; set aside and keep warm.

In a large nonstick

skillet, heat oil over medium heat and cook onion, carrot and celery for about 5 minutes or until softened.

Add turkey, thyme and pepper; cook, stirring for about 4 minutes or until turkey is browned.

Add flour and cook, stirring until flour is absorbed.

Add broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire and bay leaves; bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and

simmer, stirring occasionally for about 8 minutes or until thickened.

Remove bay leaves and pour mixture into an 8 cup (2 L) casserole dish.

Spoon potato mixture over top to cover evenly.

Bake in a preheated 400 F (200 C) oven for about 20 minutes or until potatoes are lightly golden and filling is bubbling.

Remove from oven and serve.

Stamps knock off Tomahawks Advance to East Division final to face Kangaroos Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Williams Lake Stampeders and the Quesnel Kangaroos will resume their heated rivalry in the East Division final of the Central Interior Hockey League playoffs.

The Stampeders wrapped up their best-of-three series with the Lac La Hache Tomahawks Saturday in Williams Lake posting a 7-3 win after squeaking out a 5-4 victory in game one in Lac La Hache the previous weekend.

On Saturday, both the Tomahawks and the Stampeders traded scoring opportunities in the first period, before regular season league-leading scorer Nathan Zurak beat Lac La Hache goaltender Willie Sellars with 10 seconds left in the frame to put his squad up 1-0.

Williams Lake expanded its lead to 3-0 in the second period after Jassi Sangha and Tyrel Lucas both tallied.

Williams Lake powerlifter Blair Fisher is a new world record holder.

Fisher competed Jan. 25 in Calgary, Alta., at the Raw Prairie Power Open, lifting in the masters 50-54, 308 pound, weight class to a 100 per cent raw dead lift of 573 pounds — good enough to beat the previous world record of 557 pounds.

“It’s exciting for me,” Fisher said.

“I’ve had a bunch of Canadian records before but never a world record.

“I competed back in September with the same organization and deadlifted 550 pounds, and at that time I found out the record was 557 so I had that in the back of my mind when I came back for this one.”

Fisher added close to 55 lifters took part in the competition.

“It was a good meet,” he said.

“It was well run, drug tested and unequipped, no lifting equipment. That was different for me and that was just the second raw meet I’ve done, so it was a big change.”

The use of pesticides is intended within the area to which the pest management plan applies. The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to treat wood structures with pesticides (“wood preservatives”) to protect and increase their service life and ensure the reliability and safety of the electrical system. The wood structures include, poles and associated equipment and any wood structures eg. helipads, fences, sign posts, walkways and bridges.

The PMP applies to those portions of the province-wide distribution, transmission and generation system that utilizes wood poles and structures and is owned or managed by BC Hydro. The BC Hydro service area encompasses all of British Columbia.

The proposed duration of the PMP is from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2019.

The trade names and active ingredients of the wood preservatives proposed for use under this plan include: copper naphthenate combined with sodium fluoride, Cop R Plastic or equivalent; copper naphthenate combined with borax, CuRap 20 or equivalent; copper napthenate, Cobra Wrap, CuNap-8 or equivalent; copper hydroxide, CuBor or equivalent; sodium fluoride, Pole Wrap or equivalent; metam sodium, Guardsman Post and Pole Fumigant 42% or equivalent; disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, Tim-Bor Professional, Impel rods, GenBor RTU, Boracol or equivalent; copper hydroxide, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate and boric acid in combination, CobraRods, Genics CuB or equivalent; copper hydroxide, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, zinc and boric acid, no product name; permethrin, Dragnet or equivalent; propetamphos, Catalyst or equivalent; chorpyrifos, Dursban or equivalent.

The proposed manners of applying the wood preservatives include: external bandage treatments, internal liquid, powder, foam and gel treatments, external liquid treatments (brush on), internal solid treatments (rods).

Other management methods include stubbing and replacing wood poles and when installing new poles using pre treated poles and using plastic liners.

sports Épée de Groundhog a slice for fencers Greg Sabatino Tribune Staff Writer The groundhog in Williams Lake isn’t quite like his peers around North America.

This one emerged from its burrow (one day early), for the 14th consecutive year, brandishing an épée, ready for battle, as the Scout Island Fencing Club hosted its Épée de Groundhog fencing competition Saturday at Mountview elementary.

“Because the first one was on Groundhog Day, we didn’t want to take things too seriously. That was a big part of it [the name],” said Glen Burrill, president of the SIFC. “We have a pretty good sense of humour at the club and

that really just expressed our way of seeing it and people have taken to it. It’s worked well.”

Close to 20 fencers competing in four separate divisions — under 13 épée, cadet épée, open épée and open sabre — arrived from Prince George, Horsefly and Williams Lake for a full day of competition.

“The matches were really close,” Burrill said.

“The last one [in open sabre] was by one point. It was 15-14, and when it’s close like that people really appreciate those matches because it goes right to the very end and their skills are very well matched. It makes for an exciting match.”

Joshua Swan picked up the bronze medal, with McSweeney taking fourth.

The cadet épée class saw Van der Kraan, also of Williams Lake, win the gold medal, beating 150 Mile’s Ryan Haskins in the event final. Turner and Swan finished third and fourth, respectively.

And finally, in the under-13 épée division it was Turner claiming the gold, with Josh Yahnke winning a silver medal.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” Burrill said.

“It’s really exciting and it’s one of the very few combat sports we have.”

For anyone interested in trying the sport the club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mountview elementary gymnasium.

Festival committee welcomes new members Michelle Erlandson Special to Tribune/Advisor The Cariboo Festival has been around for 56-plus years and is a volunteer group that promotes performing arts and writing.

The board is made up of music teachers, school teachers, retired school teachers and others who want to see the arts thrive in Williams Lake.

Festival committee president Ann Smith, began volunteering years ago when her sons participated in the festival.

Ann, herself is a musician and singer and has performed in the festival as well.

Smith is also the festival’s piano section director.

Past president Jane Perry stepped into the role of treasurer after the committee sadly lost

John Sykes who was the treasurer for years.

Perry has also performed in the festival in the strings section.

Carrie Barker has been involved for many years as a piano teacher and held various positions on the board. Barker is currently filling the position of secretary. Barker stepped into this position as the committee lost another long time member, Dodie Hama, last year.

Other members include Sharon Hoffman, retired school teacher and current singing and drama enthusiast, filling the role of vocal/choral director and Christine Constabel, retired dentist who also teaches music and is filling the role of band/instrumental director.

Laura Zimmerman, a parent of a student who participates in the festival, is filling the role of creative writing director along

with myself, Michelle Erlandson, music teacher, filling the role of speech arts director and publicity promotions.

Sherry Johnson, school teacher and music teacher, covers the provincial details in order for the festival to be involved with the provincial festivals.

Raeleen Campsall, a retired school teacher, whose daughter participated with the festival, handles all the award needs of the festival and also represents the committee on the Williams Lake Community Arts Council.

Anne Brown, whose granddaughter participates in the festival, keeps in touch with the committee’s donors.

Other volunteers include Elizabeth Cornett, retired teacher and Jennifer Stirling, mother of youth who previously participated in festivals.

The Cariboo Festival committee is a great group of volunteers who work well together in order to give students of various disciplines the chance to further their art studies.

New members to the committee are most welcome and personal involvement with music is not necessary to join.

Just being a person who wants to see arts promoted is all that is required to be part of the committee.

The deadline for entries in Cariboo Festival 2014 is coming up on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The festival syllabus is available at the Open Book.

The final festival honours concert will be held April, 26 when the adjudicators will announce the performers who will go on to participate in the provincial festival in Penticton June 3 to 7.

Seniors’ Centre to host Valentine’s tea next week Win Gooding Special to Tribune/Advisor It’s very uplifting to have the days becoming noticeably longer this past month.

It’s also a welcome change to experience having a much warmer January than we’re usually faced with.

If you’re tired of being cooped up at home because of the icy

walking conditions during the winter, why not join the walking group at Boitanio Mall on Friday mornings starting at 10:15 a.m.

You set your own pace so do not have to worry about trying to keep up with the others who attend.

Join the group afterwards for a coffee break if you feel so inclined.

The OAPO Branch 93 is having a Valentine’s Tea in honour of

those seniors 80 and over at the Seniors’ Centre on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Bring a friend for an enjoyable afternoon.

There is bingo every Saturday at the centre. Doors open at 11 a.m. and bingo starts at 12 p.m.

Volunteers are welcome to help so call Pat Cassidy at 250-3924236 if you are interested.

Carpet Bowling is held on Monday and Wednesday at 1 p.m. downstairs at the centre.

The OAPO monthly meeting is today, Feb 13 at the seniors centre starting at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Your input is important.

Also a reminder that the Seniors’ Activity Centre annual general meeting is in February.

The Williams Lake Library’s Armchair Travel series continues with a tour of Northern Vancouver Island with Krista Liebe this Thursday, Feb. 6 in the library meeting room. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ”You will visit Alert Bay, Sointula and other beautiful places and you might find out quite a few interesting facts about them you did not know before,” Liebe says.

Sunday, Feb. 16 New Valentine’s sleigh ride date

Due to the extremely cold weather predicted for this weekend, the Valentine’s sleigh ride hosted annually by the Cariboo Draft Horse and Driving Association will be moved to Sunday, Feb. 16 instead of Sunday, Feb. 9.

Free Family Day Skate The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex is hosting a free skate as well as offering free ice skate rentals to celebrate B.C. Family Day next week. Made possible by a provincial government grant, the event will take place Monday, Feb. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to noon and will include free ice time and skate rentals.

Film club shows INUK Saturday Krista Liebe Special to Tribune/Advisor Finally the Williams Lake Film Club has obtained the film INUK for you.

We are quite excited to be able to show you this film on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Gibraltar Room at the Cariboo Memorial Complex. Back doors open at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $5, children under 12 are free.

We have specifically scheduled this film for a Saturday matinée so that all of our out of towners have the opportunity to see it.

Inuk is a film about modern-day Greenland and the lives of the Inuit today.

The language is Greenlandic and Danish, with English subtitles. Length of film is 90 min.

INUK tells the story of a 16 year old boy.

He had a happy early childhood but then

Aviaaja, the warmhearted director of a home becomes involved in his case. She realizes that Inuk is searching for the ice, it is in his blood.

She makes sure that Inuk is sent to the Uummannaq Children’s Home on a tiny island in the middle of the Arctic Sea ice.

This home really does exist, you can google it. There Inuk meets the young girl Inul and Ikuma, a local

polar bear hunter, who has his own share of problems. Haunted by his troubled past, his extraordinary hunting skills are mysteriously disappearing.

Aviaaja asks Ikuma to take Inuk on his annual seal-hunting trip.

She is certain that despite the risks of such a long and dangerous voyage, Inuk and Ikuma will learn from each other.

They both have to work out the problems they face through the overwhelming changes in their lives, they have to reconnect to their past, to their traditions and their true culture.

So when Inuk, the city boy, joins Ikuma, the great hunter of the North, on the epic dogsled voyage, they face much more than the bitter cold and fragile sea-ice. The most difficult part of the journey is the one they must make within themselves …

This film tells the authentic story of Greenland today, a country torn between tradition and modernity, and a universal story about the quest for identity, transition and rebirth after the deepest of wounds and hurts.

All of the actors are non-professionals, teenagers from the Uummannaq Home for neglected Inuit children and local Inuit seal hunters.

Their performances are exceptional and the cinematography just might blow you away, it is so beautiful.

This amazing film has garnered 23 international awards, including a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film for the Oscars in 2013, but still barely anyone has heard of it.

You will have one chance to see it, this coming Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Potato House directors ready for a new year Gaeil Farrar Tribune Staff Writer The Potato House Sustainability Society is ready for another year following a sampling of interesting potato inspired dishes at their annual general meeting last month.

The society directors work to raise awareness about sustainability in the community in a number of ways, first and foremost by creating a heritage designation for an old house down town known as the Potato House. Executive director Marin Patenaude is the reason the Potato House site is no longer a weed field, says president Mary Forbes.

“She does everything from turning compost, compost coaching, garden planning, social media, to grant applications. People

can contact her with questions at spuds@ potatohouseproject. com.”

As a third year director, society founder and president Forbes works with Patenaude to ensure programs are meeting the society’s goals. She also assists in community outreach and making grant applications.

Treasurer and second year director, Chris Hutton, brings his experience as a city planner for the City of Williams Lake and has been essential in creating the new urban chicken and bees bylaws the Potato House wholeheartedly supports, Forbes says.

Second year director and SPIN (Small Plot INtensive) Brianna van de Wijngaard cultivates a small part of the Potato House landscape to grow ed-

ible goodness for local farmer’s markets.

Pat Teti is a third year director, founding member and the treasurer. “Pat keeps us organized, registered, up to date on the society act, grounded in our constitution and keeps out website up to date,” Forbes says.

“As an added bonus he takes great photos and does beautiful woodwork.”

A third year director and founding member Chris Hornby is the community outreach specialist. She hosts the used book and Potato House product booth at the summer and winter Farmer’s Markets where people can find calendars, Potato House Project upcycled-recycled shirts, memberships and garden information.

Richard Case is also a third year di-

rector and founding member who manages the Transition Town Williams Lake group activities such as film discussion nights after the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Centre board meetings.

One bad Durango in a good way The 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat.

This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beautiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment.

Looks I can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. Because of standard AWD and other packaging changes, the starting price is higher than direct competitors, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder. Both those vehicles have a base model that starts around $30,000, the Durango, in contrast, starts at $39,995 and tops out at $51,995. This Citadel model, with options, is over $60,000.

Verdict This latest Durango is yet another example of what Chrysler is doing right.

It is loaded with the latest technology, has a class leading 8-speed automatic, attitude and room to spare. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be coming to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better.

Predictions of Hybrid extinction are premature

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently equated hybrid vehicles to early amphibians that hopped out of the oceans, learned to survive on land and eventually disappeared.

Ironically, if the electric vehicle (EV) evolved in a similar way, Tesla (an exclusively EV company) wouldn’t exist right now and this would probably be in a vibrant Hybrid Age! Despite the early birth of production EV, hybrid (HEV) and now plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales continue to rise, new models continue to arrive and at least three all-new PHEVs are expected later this year.

A HEV functions just like, or similar to, a conventional gas-engine vehicle, from a driver/owner perspective.

It consumes substantially less fuel, especially in an urban environment, and a regenerative braking system can greatly extend the life of brake friction pads.

A PHEV increases the energy saving, money saving, and greenhouse gas reducing advantages by tapping into an electrical source and pulling relatively inexpensive electrical power off the main grid. It then uses this energy to go further on electrical power alone. How far depends primarily on the capacity (size) of its storage

Lugging around a bigger battery obviously increases the weight of a PHEV and it takes up either passenger cabin or more likely trunk cargo space. The latest lithium-ion battery packs are lighter and more compact, but the space sacrifice is something that a prospective owner must be willing to live with.

Hybrid owner feedback is generally very positive and the fuel savings can be substantial. That said, you generally pay a premium for this technology, but that gap is rapidly narrowing. Last year, GM slashed $5,000 off the price of its popular Chevrolet Volt, the best selling PHEV on the market. While GM marketing promotes the Volt as

an “extended range” electric vehicle, as its road wheels are always driven by an electric motor, it’s still classified as a PHEV. A small on-board gas engine generates electricity, when necessary.

The new Honda Accord Hybrid (a HEV) further blurs the differences between HEV and PHEV, as it uses the same two-motor powertrain used in the Accord Plug-in Hybrid (a PHEV edition that’s currently only sold in selected markets). At speeds under 80 km/h the road wheels are driven by an electric motor and its Atkinson cycle gas engine is only used to generate electrical power, when needed.

The current list price for an Accord EX-L is $29,455 and the Accord Hybrid starts at $29,590, which is only $135 more. The top-line Accord Touring V6 sells for $35,400 and the Touring edition of Accord Hybrid is $36,690, just an extra $290. The price differential is almost non-existent.

X5 marks 15 years of luxurious activity

It’s hard to believe that the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) was launched in the last century.

It was a pioneer vehicle in 1999, which essentially launched a brand new segment.

Fast forward to 2014 and you now have the latest installment of five-passenger people mover. 2014 BMW X5 xDrive 35i – the third generation X5 continues the tradition of modern luxury mixed with a capable xDrive all-wheel drive system, and of course, some of the latest tech gadgets.

It also comes with an overhauled look, on the inside and out. Starting with its Mineral White Metallic exterior, BMW continues to build on the X5’s soft-edge features, meaning, designers didn’t ditch the rounded curves for more angular or boxy characteristics.

short front overhang, a long wheelbase, upright A-pillars and a short distance between the front axle and the leading edge of the front door.

The broad-set kidney grille reaches out and touches the front headlights, making its head-on appearance bold and seamless.

To me, I find the overall looks to be understated but not necessarily awe-inspiring.

My mind wasn’t blown when I first laid eyes on it. Then again, looks aren’t everything.

If functionality is what you’re

The BMW X5 xDrive 35i — the third generation of X5 luxury. after, the X5 has plenty of that.

Instead of starting in the front row, let’s skip to the back seats. The leather-trimmed cabin offers each occupant a cuddle when sitting inside. Furthermore, legroom in the second row is generous, especially when the front seats aren’t pushed all the way back. There’s even a decent amount of space in the cargo area, which totals 650L. In the driver’s seat, the cap-

tain of this luxurious vehicle has the best of all worlds.

Within arm’s reach is the iDrive infotainment system, easily readable centre stack and the gearshift lever to the 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic. The transmission is then linked to BMW’s award-winning engine.

Powering this particular vehicle was the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six cylinder engine. It has an output of 300 horsepower

and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Should you desire more ponies, you can always opt for the 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 offering more get up and go (445hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.)

When you turn on the X5 via the push button start, you also have the option to have more or less pizazz when it comes to driving dynamics.

There are four modes in which you can enjoy this SAV including, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Eco Pro.

The names are self-explanatory. If you’re romping around town, and don’t want to bridle all the horses, and you want to save on some fuel, Eco Pro is the mode you’d want. But if you’re feeling like you want a little more something something, Sport or Sport+ will do the trick.

Aside from changing the feel of the X5 when driving, you’ll experience a ride that is calm and collected, as well as smooth and enjoyable.

Steering is done via a rackand-pinion system, therefore it’s not a chore to get the vehicle moving in a direction that you want. I’d categorize it on the “heavier” side, but because of that, I felt I was better able to interpret what was going on underneath, especially at higher speeds.

Another perk of the steering wheel? It’s heated. Other things inside that keep you and the passengers warm is the ability to control four different climate zones.

Thanks to the Premium

Package ($5,500) one of its features is the Auto 4-Zone Climate Control. This package also adds heated rear seats, a head-up display, manual side sunshades, and a feature that I really like, surround view with top view.

Surround view allows gives you a 270° projection of what’s going on around the X5. For a vehicle as large as it is, it’s a wonderful feature to have.

Of course, BMW also loaded this particular test vehicle with the Technology Package ($3,800) that includes active LED headlights, active bind spot detection, lane departure and collision warning and more.

And to make life behind the wheel a little more musical, there was an integrated Bang and Olufsen system that will add $4,900 to the base MSRP of $62,900. The price as tested came to $77,950 (excluding the destination charge of $2,095). alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011 to 2013 The redesigned 2011 Grand Cherokee was still unmistakably a Jeep, even though it came with an all-new chassis and body.

It was offered with an impressively wide range of basic hardware choices that included three 4x4 systems, an optional Quadra-Lift air suspension system and two engines.

The standard engine is a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and

other than some early production line glitches, (see recalls) it’s a pretty reliable, fuel efficient modern unit.

A big improvement on the previous 3.7 V6, the 3.6 V6 features 24-valves and variable valve timing and can produce 290 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. And fuel economy is rated at: 13.0/8.9 L/100 km (city/highway).

That’s considerably better than the optional 5.7-litre V8 hemi engine, which is rated at 15.7 L/100 km in the city and 10.6 L/100 km on the highway.

The pulling power (390 lb-ft of torque) of the big V8 engine, however, helps to more than double the potential towing capability of the Grand Cherokee, from 1588 kg to 3266 kg.

Both engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Laredo and Laredo X trim levels come with Quadra-Trac I, a full-time

4x4 system that distributes drive 48/52 front-torear, but no low-range is provided. Quadra-Trac II was optional on Laredo X and standard on Limited and Overland.

This system is capable of sending 100 per cent of drive to either the front or rear axle and has a selectable low range, which is important for demanding off-road use.

Then there’s Quadra-Drive II. This was optional on the Laredo X, Limited and Overland and adds an electronic limited-slip differential that can concentrate up to 100 per cent of drive to a single wheel. It also comes with Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist systems.

The optional (Quadra Lift) air suspension can lower or raise (to a maximum of 27 cm) the ride height.

It has a Park Mode that drops to its lowest (making it easier for passengers to get in or out) and an

Aero Mode that automatically lowers the Grand Cherokee at highway speeds for improved aerodynamics and stability.

In addition to being a more rigid platform, the new chassis gave Grand Cherokee a 13 cm longer wheelbase and a new independent rear suspension. High-speed handling and highway ride comfort, particularly for rear seat passengers, was noticeably improved.

A new top-line SRT edition of Grand Cherokee, with a 6.4-litre V8 hemi engine, was added for the 2012 model year.

A six-speed automatic transmission also replaced five-speed automatic with the 5.7-litre V8 and a U-connect hands-free phone feature became a standard on all versions.

No significant changes were made for the 2013 model year and the big news for 2014 is the introduction of a diesel engine

edition plus a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Gertrud Sturm-Krumsiek It is with great sadness that we announce that Gertrud “Gigi’ Sturm-Krumsiek of Horsefly passed away while visiting her daughter in Germany. Her year-long battle with cancer ended on December 8, 2013 at the age of 62.

Gigi was laid to rest in a green burial forest in Bredenbeck, Germany, just 700m from the home she had once lived in. This is part of the forest she and her husband Rainer regularly used for long walks and visited with the children in fall to gather acorns.

Gigi was born in Osnabrück on April 18, 1951, the oldest of five children. She graduated from high school and then went on to college and worked as a doctor’s assistant. On October 1, 1986 Gigi married Rainer in Bredenbeck, Germany. Together they ran a successful landscaping business until they emigrated to Canada in 1993, together with their children Florian, Inga and Arne.

They first settled in Kelowna where they continued with their landscaping business. Two years later, they found their dream property in Horsefly, 2200 acres of beautiful pasture and forest. Here, with much hard work, they built the certified organic Big Bear Ranch, raising cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens. Certified since 2004, the Ranch continues to serve regular customers both locally and on the Lower Mainland.

Gigi put many hours into community service here in Horsefly, as President of the Fall Fair committee since 2005, and as a committee member for some years before that.

Although ranch life consumed most of her days, she always found time to help her friends and neighbours with their projects. Gigi’s loves were her children, her garden and her Icelandic horses. She won many ribbons at the Fall Fair each year, especially in the vegetable, flower-arrangement and baking categories. Her unique style of breadmaking lives on in Horsefly today.

Big Bear Ranch will never be the same without her contagious laughter and her warm hospitality. Her house was always open to friends and visitors from all over the world.

Gigi is survived by her loving husband Rainer, her son Florian with his wife Stefanie, her daughter Inga with her partner Arne, her son Arne and his partner Maureen. She is very much missed by her many friends here in the town she called home, Horsefly.
