FIVE TIPS FOR ENJOYING CONNECTED ENTERTAINMENT

1

by Greg Sheppard

Most TVs and Blu-ray players now come with the ability to join your home WiFi network. This allows for direct access to Netflix, YouTube, Internet radio and many other streaming services.

2

Network connectivity also provides access to your locally stored media. This means that, through your TV or Blu-ray player, you can view photos stored on your computer or smartphone, as well as enjoy your own movies wirelessly on your TV.

3

For music, there are lots of great wireless options as well. Many speakers come with either Airplay or Bluetooth connectivity, so all you need to do is bring up your favourite song on your smartphone or tablet and enjoy.

4

Portability has been a recent area of focus in connected audio. Not only are you able to listen to your music wirelessly at home, but you can now take it with you everywhere you go.

5

The newest area in network connected technology is major appliances. We’re beginning to see washers and dryers that you can turn on when you’re leaving the office, fridges that will notify you when your milk is expired, and even ovens that can text you when your food is ready.

Haney Sewing and Sound features a variety of products and brands for all your audio-visual needs.

Haney Sewing and Sound plugs into the latest high-def TV trends When Greg Sheppard first set eyes on a 4K television set – one of the latest emerging categories in the high-tech market – he was left in awe. “It’s stunning, really,” says the sales consultant at Haney Sewing and Audio, located at 22381 Dewdney Trunk Rd. in Maple Ridge. “It’s amazing. It adds depth, it adds incredible detail.” Anyone walking by the three impressive display models inside the store can’t help but become hypnotized. These screens offer four times the resolution of typical high-definition technology found in the average living room. “It’s time for something new,” Sheppard says, noting HD has now been around for over a decade. And that’s just what Haney Sewing and Sound/AVU aims to do – offer its customers new and top-of-the-line products. Even if some technologies are on the cutting edge and haven’t broken through to the mainstream consumer just yet, the store still stocks some of the latest gizmos. “We like to have them out on display for everyone to see. Even if it’s not what people want right away, it’s what they will want soon,” Sheppard says. Despite the impressive visuals offered by the next generation of TVs, there’s one thing those old tube sets still have going for them: internal space for big speakers. “As TVs are getting thinner and thinner, audio quality from those TVs is dramatically decreased,” Sheppard says. “Even a TV from five years ago that was four-inches deep was able to fit some decent speakers into it. But now TVs are one-inch deep and there’s just no way to get good sound out of such

tiny little speakers.” But it does leave the door open to some high-quality – and economically priced – sound bars and surround-sound systems that can provide much more than internal speakers. Audio has become one of the biggest sellers at Haney Sewing and Sound the past few years. Consumers can enjoy the sounds of a creek running in the background during the latest

“At any given time, we’re selling at the same or better price as any of the big box stores. The price is the same, but the service is better.” Greg Sheppard, Haney Sewing and Sound Meryl Streep film. It also means the subwoofer will make movie lovers feel the power of every punch tossed in a Marvel superhero flick. And lately the market has been increasingly drawn to wireless speakers. Sonos has been one of the few brands offering this technology in a manner that offers high-quality sound without being “outrageously expensive,”

according to Sheppard. He says more companies are soon expected to meet consumer demand for wireless audio options, which means no more cords wedged behind the home theatre system like chow mein in a take-out container. Even though there may be fewer wires compared to the days when the tube TV dominated, Sheppard acknowledges many complexities still exist for some consumers. That’s why Haney Sewing and Sound is determined to go above and beyond when it comes to helping customers. “The most important thing is really just asking questions and trying to figure out what it is they’re after,” Sheppard says. “We have people here who really know what they’re talking about. If you have technical questions or any of that sort of stuff, we’re always happy to help before, during or after the sale.” That’s a huge part of why they have so many repeat customers coming through their doors. Even though some people do their research and have a short-list of models they want to check out, Sheppard says other customers are a “blank canvas,” needing some guidance to find a set that fits their lifestyle. In their ongoing quest to satisfy customers, last year Haney Sewing and Sound also began selling mattresses. “All of our pricing is as straight-forward as we can possibly make it,” Sheppard says. “When you’re looking at it, you’re not worried about extras. Everything is included: delivery, box springs, the works. What you pay is not going to change by $600 when you get to the counter.”

5

Have Fun & Play GameS – being located inside Chances Maple Ridge, The Well is the only place in town where you can enjoy some great food and then get in on the excitement of slot machines, electronic table games and bingo.

The Well Restaurant, located inside Chances Maple Ridge opened this past October.

Ambience, entertainment and ‘the whole shebang’ draws patrons to The Well restaurant After a young couple recently stepped through the doors of The Well to enjoy their first meal at the restaurant, located inside Chances Maple Ridge, they were completely dazzled by their surroundings. “They were just blown away by how beautiful the decor is, how great the food was, the ambience, the entire package – they just loved it,” recalls Marty Morel, Food and Beverage Manager for The Well and Chances Maple Ridge, located at 22710 Lougheed Highway. The atmosphere is casual, while the decor is modern industrial. And the space is sprinkled with 80-inch TVs broadcasting hockey games and sports. But The Well isn’t just a restaurant offering an array of locally inspired dishes and serving food specials we all love, it is also home to banquet space and live entertainment on weekends. Musicians, comedians and even magicians take to the stage to keep guests entertained and engaged. With the flick of a switch, three giant garage doors can come down from the ceiling to divide the room in half for private events, birthday celebrations or a UFC viewing party. In fact, the first UFC event at The Well was such a success that Morel immediately made plans to host another one in February. “We are listening to our guests and catering to their needs,” the manager says, adding people are naturally

drawn to space as guests are often greeted by the sounds of everything from live country music to a Sinatra-esque crooner. “The room is absolutely gorgeous and allows for great sight lines for all. The space is open and cozy at the same time…even when it’s full!”

“It’s a place that you can come to for a nice dinner and you can have a few beers after work.” Marty Morel, The Well He says once people come in and explore what The Well has to offer, he knows they will return in the future as this spot provides something for everyone. “Our biggest goal is to attract and provide entertainment options to the people in this community and not having

them go to Vancouver or other parts of the Lower Mainland to get what they are looking for,” Morel says, adding The Well offers a “complete night out experience.” Besides, investing in a costly cab ride downtown or taking an arduous trip home on transit isn’t necessary. It’s easier and just as entertaining to stop by The Well for great food and good times, have some fun on the slot machines, then head back into the restaurant for some drinks to cap off the night. “It’s a really nice bar with a great atmosphere. It’s the place to be for Great Food and Good Times,” he says, adding the staff at the facility have been fantastic and welcoming to everyone since the doors opened last fall. And since the restaurant’s full menu launched in December, Morel says the offerings have continued to impress food lovers who take advantage of the Fill Your Well specials, such as The Well Nachos for $9 on Mondays. Surf & Turf for $9 on Wednesdays plus the $5 Three Egg Breakfast on Saturdays & Sundays. The restaurant also offers an International Buffet for $15 every Tuesday night, with a different theme each week. This means The Well can offer everything from Asian to Eastern European cuisine while still maintaining a consistent menu for those who already love the regular dishes. “The goal is to change it up and keep it interesting.”

FIVE TIPS FOR BUYING A HEATING OR COOLING SYSTEM by Ron McMyn

1 Choose the right contractor, someone with a proven record

of service and reliability. Consider how long they’ve been in business, and make sure you choose a reliable company that can be there down the road.

2 Make sure your contractor carries all the parts for your

heating or cooling solution. This will shorten delays if you need something replaced.

3 Make sure your contractor can answer calls and be there for your warranty issues.

4 Ensure that your contractor has licensed and bonded service

technicians and quality installers.

5 Pick a contractor with a wide selection of heating or cooling

products so they can give you the one that’s right for your home.

Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal has been servicing the Fraser Valley for the past 28 years.

Not only heating at Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal Big Valley Heating And Sheet Metal Ltd.’s Ron McMyn has seen dramatic changes in his company over the last few decades, as it’s risen from a small operation to a large-scale business. “I’ve owned the company since 1986,” McMyn said. “We’ve gone from two guys to 30 guys.” McMyn said the key to the business’ success has been an emphasis on serving customers’ needs. “It’s good customer service and good quality work,” he said. “It’s mostly just treating the customer fairly.” Big Valley has built its reputation by standing behind its products and quickly responding to customers’ concerns . “It’s always being available, always being reachable,” he said. “If they have an issue, they come in, the ser-

yard patio heaters, outdoor heaters and barbecues.” He said those patio and outdoor heaters have risen in popularity lately, as they provide a nice way to have an enjoyable winter experience outside without going anywhere. “People are staying around their homes more,” McMyn said. McMyn said cooling products and air filtration products are also becoming more important parts of the business. Big Valley offers customized solutions that are perfect for those who need certain rooms kept cool, those who are bothered by allergies and others. “We do air conditioning, custom cooling, air filtration, air purification, and UV lights” he said. Big Valley’s size allows the business to maintain an extensive store so people can come in and see what’s available. “We have our own showroom where you can see all the products,” he said. Big Valley maintains an on-premises sheet metal shop as well, which allows us to tweak systems if required so each client gets the ideal solution for their home. “We’ll custom-make it to fit your house,” McMyn said. “We’re easy and accommodating. No job is too big or too small.” The heating business has changed significantly over the decades McMyn has been running Big Valley. He said one of the most notable differences is just how much furnaces have im-

proved. “We’ve gone from 40 per cent efficiency furnaces all the way to 98 per cent efficient.” McMyn said that’s a tremendous

reason for those with older furnaces to upgrade, as the new ones’ efficiency can lead to dramatic energy savings. Big Valley can help with that. “We do lots of retrofits, taking out those old, inefficient, gas-guzzling furnaces,” McMyn said. “It’s a huge savings, a lot cheaper.” Another key way to save energy is cleaning or replacing dirty filters. “Dirty filters use a lot of energy,” McMyn said. Big Valley’s open Monday through Saturday. Their proven track record makes them a reliable pick when looking for heating or cooling solutions, and they are a company that’s in it for the long haul. “We’re going to be here tomorrow, the next day and the day after,” says Mcmyn. •

FIVE TIPS FOR GREAT SKIN by Dr. Strauss

1 Rehydrate. Drink at least two litres of water a day. 2 Moisturize. Make sure that your skin is not dried out. 3 Eat a healthy diet full of antioxidants and plant oils (nuts, avocado, olives, etc.)

4 Use a pH balanced cleanser. Optimal skin health requires pH 5.5 and most cleansers are too weak or too strong for most skin types.

5 Wear SPF 15 or greater everyday to protect your skin

against harmful sun damage.

Dr. Allan Strauss enhances a patient’s lips.

Clinic seeks ultimate balance of health and wellbeing by mixing science and nature There was a time when the use of naturopathic medicine, which favours natural remedies over prescription medication to solve health issues, was known for its adherence on traditional use. “There is still a perception out there where people think that there is not enough science to back up what it is that we do clinically. Nowadays Naturopathic Physicians are more evidence-based and we have the literature to support our theories. The point I want everyone to understand is that my approach is evidence based. Relying on laboratory and clinical evidence,” says Dr. Allan Strauss, who’s Salveo Naturopathic and Skin Care Clinic has been operating in Maple Ridge (22550 Dewdney Trunk Rd) for about three years.

“I’m a Naturopathic Physician which is essentially a naturalmedical doctor.” Dr. Allan Strauss “We treat every concern the way a GP (general practitioner) treats, but we have the added benefit of access to different labs, different techniques-some old, some new.” Dr. Strauss is dedicated to explaining to his patients how and why certain diseases occur in some people. His aim is to get to the root of the patient’s health issues as opposed to telling them “here is your diagnosis and your

medication to go with it.” The doctor wants to go further than simply treating the symptoms. “It’s not always a medication that solves the problem…it could be counselling, lifestyle, a natural product, and even a prescription.” But it’s some of the less apparent impacts of those natural products Dr. Strauss believes are the most important. “They don’t have the side effects prescriptions do. That is the No. 1 benefit for a lot of people. We don’t have to worry about any long term side effects for most professional grade supplements,” he says. “Because in the shortterm, you’ll do whatever it takes to feel better.” But people are concerned and asking what will happen. The most common question is “Will this prescription cause a side effect?”” The doctor’s devotion to naturopathic medicine stems from 12 years of post-secondary education studying nutrition, chemistry, biochemistry, and medicine. “When you learn those hard sciences for as long as I have, you gain an appreciation for understanding health sciences at a deeper level,” he says. “Then after a while you start to realize that there’s other ways of looking and treating the same problem.” Dr. Strauss notes that natural remedies have been healing people for thousands of years, effectively and safely. “We’re still taking simple vitamins like Vitamin D, to treat seasonal affective disorder” he says. “Once you think

about it you realize there are more people everyday doing natural medicine than there are pharmaceuticals.” Dr. Strauss focuses on Bioidentical Hormones and Dermatology. He has obtained advanced Bio-Identical Hormone and Dermatological procedures from all around North America. Ailments women can be treated for using hormones include fatigue, weight gain, anxiety, irritability, menstruation symptoms, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, infertility, cancer, and bone loss. Meanwhile, men are often treated for fatigue, low stamina, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, depression, prostate issues, and low libido. But despite the benefits naturopathic medicine offers both genders, Dr. Strauss says about 90 per cent of his patients are women. “Females get it. Hormones-you can talk to any female about hormones. It’s just intuitive,” he says, “The fairer sex is also willing to talk about medical issues with their friends and encourage them to seek out such treatments. Men on the other hand, may be less willing to tell their buddies that they have male issues.” Dr. Strauss offers all his patients a physical exam as well as a focused combination of medication individualized to your health. “The goal is to get you off of the medication, because as you get healthier you don’t require it. My goal for patients is “balance”; a balance in hormones, lifestyle, and nutrition.” Direct to the point, Dr. Strauss keeps his individualized protocols as simple as one can achieve. The ultimate benefit of working with him is safe and effective healthcare for you and your whole family, achieving the ultimate balance of health and wellbeing.

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Brandon Zimmerman

1 Know your car’s maintenance schedule and be vigilant with service.

2 If using snow tires make sure they are removed as soon

as winter is over. The rubber compound in snow tires is much softer than all season tires, and will wear out quickly in warm weather.

3 Take care of your tires, keeping them properly inflated for safe driving and better gas mileage.

4 Don’t ignore your dashboard warning lights. A signal can mean any number of system failures, from a fuel vapor leak caused by a loose gas cap to a blinking check engine light could indicate a severe miss-fire that could damage your car’s engine.

5 Flush your cooling system at least every two years to avoid rust and sediment, which can be very costly and harm your engine.

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Craig Jones

1

You must acquire your PAL license which allows you to legally own firearms. (wescoastinstruction.com is a great place to start)

2

Once completing and passing your PAL course, submit paperwork as soon as possible, the more proactive you are in this process the faster your license will show up in the mail.

3

Once you have received your license, its time to purchase your firearm. The internet is a great starting point for research, your local store should have a large selection of firearms and accessories. Do not be intimidated by the store or its employees, it can be overwhelming the first few visits but we are here to help you enjoy the sport.

4

Once you have made your purchase, get your new gun home and clean it, often new guns have factory grease and other materials that should be cleaned out before using.

5

Handle your firearm at home, ensure it is safe and unloaded before you do. Rack the bolt, use the safety, etc. Knowing your gun before you hit the range will ensure a safe and pleasant range experience.

Wanstall’s staff, [names left to right], Craig, Anthony, Gary, Dan, and Matt are happy to help customers find the right firearm.

Gun shop takes aim at niche markets There was a very traditional – and very accurate – type of a gun owner when Craig Jones picked up his first firearm decades ago. “The demographic was men, and they were hunters. And now the demographic is all over the map and includes sporting clays for shotguns, cowboy-action shooting, tactical-match shooting – all kinds of different types of disciplines in terms of sports,” the co-owner of Maple Ridge’s Wanstalls gun store says.

“...as of Feb. 9, 2014, Wanstalls is the only business in Canada offering firearms financing. The new service allows people to pay for their weapons in installments over the course of a year.” Wanstalls Co-Owner Craig Jones “What we’re seeing more and more is young people with disposable income that want to have fun. This is something they heard on the radio or through other ranges and things like that, and they said, ‘You know what? I had a great time and I want to get into it.’” And that ever-diversifying market not

only extends to younger generations of men, but to previously unknown female clientele, as well. “So much more of firearms are now being designed expressly for women, so they fit differently and are being carried by gun stores knowing full well when we have this gun, that a man will not use this gun – he can’t, it’s not going to fit him properly,” Jones says. “But we carry them because we know that we have female customers. We have more and more of them coming in.” He adds there is a very important reason why all these new customers are venturing into Wanstalls. “We have noticed that when we are talking to somebody that’s just coming through the door, they’re like, ‘Ah, thanks. I’ve been to other places and you’re not scary,’” Jones says. “I can understand if somebody opens up the door [at another store] and they see a bunch of guys standing behind the counter all wearing black shirts, staring at them behind a wall of guns. I can see how that might be intimidating.” Just as there are new trends in the firearms business with regards to customers, there are new trends in terms of products. “It’s your customer that’s going to tell you where your business is going to go through sales and through demand,” Jones says. “We’re constantly turning over rocks and scouring, looking for what the coolest thing out there is to have.” Wanstalls is so dedicated to providing clients with items they didn’t even know they wanted, Jones travelled to

the annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas in January 2013 in search of the newest models. According to Jones, his gun shop is now the only business in the country offering the Boberg handgun – an iPhone-sized firearm that’s the smallest gun legally available to Canadians. Meanwhile, customers are also being drawn to a line of 22-calibre accessories.

Wanstalls carries a variety of brands.

“Sort of like a plug-and-play kind of a thing, but they can make a firearm,” the store owner says. “But it’s going to be a higher-end, more of a precision type of gun.” Jones says as of Feb. 9, 2014, Wanstalls is the only business in Canada offering firearms financing. The new service allows people to pay for their weapons in installments over the course of a year. Furthermore, the shop has been carving out a market for those interested in high-end handgun lines such as Nighthawk Custom and Ed Brown. With prices ranging between $3,000 and $7,000, the firearms financing ensures those handguns are within the grasp of more consumers than ever before.

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Shayne Saunders

1

The marketplace is flooded with cheaper-made products and it pays to educate yourself on how the different products are made before you buy.

2

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for acclimation and installation. It is important to understand the different characteristics and limitations of the products you purchase in order to get the best value from your flooring investment.

3

You should maintain a stable environment in your home to help eliminate buckling and gapping issues with your wood floors. The humidity in your home should be in the range of 40 to 60 per cent for laminate, engineered and hardwood flooring.

4

Proper sub-floor preparation is the foundation of a quality installation. Check for level prior to starting your installation.

5

Different products require different care and maintenance. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer in order to keep your warranty intact.

Visit a showroom near you and see how premium products, expert advice and quality workmanship have helped to establish Laminate Warehouse as a leader in the flooring industry.

When it comes to flooring, Laminate Warehouse has you covered When you walk in the front door of Laminate Warehouse you immediately get the feeling that you are dealing with a company that has your best interests at heart. All of its products are beautifully displayed with visible price tags on each piece. Knowledgeable sales staff, professionally trained installers and guaranteed lowest prices are some of the standard policies that have helped make this locally owned company a leader in the flooring industry. Laminate Warehouse owners Shayne Saunders and his wife YT have built their business based on a no-nonsense approach to serving customers. Their reputation means everything to them and that shows in how they treat consumers. No games, no gimmicks – just great service and a commitment to quality workmanship.

“We believe in what we sell and how we sell it” Shayne Saunders, Laminate Warehouse Owner Laminate Warehouse offers a huge selection of laminate, carpet, vinyl, hardwood and engineered flooring. It also carries transitions, baseboard, casing and crown moulding. “We only carry top quality products that are backed by the best warranties in the industry and we choose our suppliers carefully to ensure the best possible value to our customers,” adds Saunders. Laminate Warehouse buys direct from the factory and due to high-volume

buying power, it can offer top quality merchandise at unbelievable prices. Its Whistler Premium line of laminate flooring has built a solid reputation for consistent quality. “We actually compare our Whistler Premium line side by side with our competitor’s product and the results are amazing. Many of the other products on the market are 10 to 20 per cent lighter than Whistler Premium, which makes for a huge difference in overall quality,” says Saunders. Whistler Premium has even gone through a waterproofing process, in which all four edges are protected with wax, which helps protect against moisture and accidental spills. “With a lifetime residential warranty against wearing, fading and staining and a five-year moisture warranty, Whistler Premium offers the best overall value for your flooring investment,” Saunder says. With more than 150 different types of laminate flooring to choose from, Laminate Warehouse is sure to have the right product to fit any budget and the right colour to satisfy even the most discerning consumer. Laminate Warehouse recently added the Uniboard product line, which is the only laminate flooring that is 100 per cent made in Canada. “We are very excited to be chosen as the local Uniboard dealer for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows” says Saunders. “Uniboard is very particular with who they do business and so are we, so it is a perfect fit for both companies.”

Not only does Laminate Warehouse carry top quality products that are easy to install for the do-it-yourself customer, it also offers professional installation by uniformed, licensed and

insured installers who are covered by the Workers Compensation Board. For those who prefer to do the job themselves, Laminate Warehouse offers sound advice and free on-site consultations. It will even lend you the tools to get the job done right. “The big advantage with our installation teams is consistent results. Our installers work directly for us, so satisfaction is 100 per cent guaranteed,” says Saunders. Laminate Warehouse currently has locations in Maple Ridge and Chilliwack, and in March is opening a third store in Langley. With a solid reputation for treating customers right, it is no surprise that Laminate Warehouse continues to grow. “We are currently looking for the right individuals to open stores in other areas and look forward to helping them build their own successful businesses,” says Saunders.

The friendly staff of Maple Ridge Chrysler

Maple Ridge Chrysler steers customers toward trust and confidence There’s really no such thing as a lemon anymore, according to Ian Speckman.“Today, no matter how cheap (a car) is, it wouldn’t stand in the market place,” says the dealer principal for Maple Ridge Chrysler, located at 11911 West St. “The consumers have driven the manufacturers to make sure the quality is far better and Chrysler has managed to keep themselves ahead on the quality.” The simple fact of the matter is that the

“You don’t have that stereotypical car salesman anymore. You actually have a professional that (is) meeting people’s needs.” Ian Speckman, dealer principal at Maple Ridge Chrysler Internet age has given way to much more access to information for buyers. “Consumers used to have to go to six or seven car lots before they made a purchase because they had to go and get information,” Speckman says. And just as consumers have become

savvier, the auto industry has raced to keep up with the needs and expectations of buyers. Even as gas prices tick upward, the Jeep brand has grown even stronger at the Chrysler dealership. “They’ve made it now so it’s economical to drive. So that’s been a big help. These new V6 engines are tremendous on fuel – over 1,000 kilometres on a tank of fuel on a Grand Cherokee, which used to do 500 (kilometres per tank).” And as vehicles have become more advanced, Speckman is constantly adapting to ensure his customers aren’t left in the dust. “Fifty per cent of the repairs nowadays are computer updates,” the dealer says, adding he invested about $150,000 last year in mechanic training for his 20 technicians. “That’s over a month’s worth of training per (technician).” What it really comes down to, is that 60 per cent of Maple Ridge Chrysler’s business is made up of repeat customers. This means sales reps are always determined to build trust and confidence so buyers know they’re making the right decision by returning. “My goal is not to sell you this car. My goal is to take it back in trade, so I need to make sure I sell you the right car today,” Speckman says.

For example, if a customer is leaning toward a vehicle with a brown exterior and brown interior, the salespeople try to steer them in another direction to benefit the buyer. “You won’t find any brown cars on my lot or brown interiors because I know they’re going to have weak resale value down the road,” Speckman explains. “I try to make sure I sell you the car that has the best resale, that has the best track record and that has the best options that will meet your needs – and we’ll facilitate good value.” This pragmatic approach to selling falls in line with the dealership’s dedication to serve Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows the best it can. “We are more than just a company that employs 130 people. We give back to the community,” Speckman says, adding Maple Ridge Chrysler donated the equivalent of about $160,000 to charities and local groups last year. This includes anything from T-ball tourneys and ice-rink sponsorship, to contributions to the Children’s Wish Foundation and KidSport – a charity that gives underprivileged children to develop team skills by participating in athletics. “We need to give (kids) the same opportunities,” Speckman says. “Sports teaches you (that) you need to rely on your teammates. It teaches you (that) you need to rely on other people to be successful.” Building that type of trust in the community is just as important to Maple Ridge Chrysler as building confidence with its customers.

FIve TIPS FOR HOMe DeCOR by Pam Milaney

1

First and foremost, understand the function of the room. The type of furniture needed and placement are paramount.

2

If you are purchasing upholstery, quality varies widely, yet can look similar. Quality matters and a minimal cost difference measured over time is well worth it.

3

Take the time to get informed. There are thousands of items in a huge selection of colours, sizes and styles. Don’t give up if you don’t see what you think will work. Go ahead, ask questions.

4

Buy the right size of furniture, period. It can be difficult to fill the voids or, worse yet, try to make pieces that are too big, work. We hear it all the time, “Why didn’t I come here first?”

5

Relax. Have fun. The experience of getting something new for your home should be exciting, not stressful. That is where experience and guidance, without being pushy, comes into play.

Tania, Shawna, Mona and Pam at Great Spaces Furniture know customer service is the cause of their success.

Great Spaces, success by design For Pam Milaney, customer service is more than just a cliché she tosses around like a sofa pillow. It’s been the cornerstone of her 11 years in business. As owner of Great Spaces Furniture, Pam knows you are only as good as your name. “It’s about building relationships with our customers,” she says. “I believe if you give great service, the sales will follow.” For the past decade, that’s exactly what Great Spaces has achieved. Pam says 90 per cent of her customers are either repeat or referrals. And she understands that no matter how many ads she runs or sales she offers, the best chance for success is a happy customer. “There will always be circumstances where things go wrong, no matter what business you are in. But we stand behind everything we sell. If there’s a prob-

“My approach is to make it a fun experience” Pam Milaney, Great Spaces Furniture owner lem, we’re going to fix it.” “Just as important,” Pam says, “is being an active member in the community.” That holds her accountable to her customers. Whether she’s walking through the park or picking up groceries, she knows she’s going

to run into the people she’s worked with. And it’s important to her to be able to look them in the eye and know there is a mutual respect. She said, as a business person, she considers herself to be “outside the box.” “I ask a lot of questions, so I can help the clients get the right pieces for their needs,” she says. “My approach is to make it a fun experience.” Part of that approach comes with some of the unique services the store offers, including a Day with a Designer, space-planning consultations, or Pick Pam’s Brain. She says she and her staff take their cues from their customer’s needs and requests and are trying to evolve in new and exciting directions. Fashions and trends change, so she constantly strives to stay ahead of the curve.

While being the owner of the store means she’s also a salesperson, she doesn’t like to be pigeon-holed as someone who puts profits before people. Her love of her works comes from being an interior designer. “It’s the gas in my tanks,” she says. It’s that fuel that drives her business to stand out in her industry. Whether it’s getting on a boat to visit a home on Pitt Lake for a consultation, consulting with developers on new builds, helping homeowners plan their home renovation, or a young family to get ready for a new baby, the challenge of the project is part of the creative process which she enjoys so much. “There’s nothing like being there, seeing the space and then making it happen. It’s fun.” Great Spaces Furniture & Design is now located in Maple Meadows Industrial Park, 20295 - 113B Ave., Maple Ridge

Five Tips For choosing a conTracTor by Tighe Lefebvre

1 Have a realistic pre-approved budget to keep the renovations within a financial comfort zone.

2 Do your research. Try and have as much knowledge as

possible about the products you would like to use.

3 Request references from your contractor. Check the BBB. Ask

for accreditation such as red seal ticket, wCB coverage, insurance coverage, local business licences. Any professional contractor should have all of the above.

4 If unexpected repairs occur during the renovation be sure to

have a set price for the necessary work to correct the issues.

5 Any good contractor knows how important

communication is between them and the homeowner. Be sure all your questions and concerns are answered and dealt with in a timely manner. Make lists and write down questions so you are well prepared during site meetings.

Terrafirma staff from left: Rob Allen, Tighe Lefebvre, Norm Bruneau, and Kent Changfoot.

Terrafirma Industries’ busiest year yet Terrafirma Industries is more than a contracting firm. It’s a one-stop shop for all your renovation needs. From tear down to cabinets, Terrafirma offers everything anyone would ever need to renovate their home. And if they don’t have exactly what you’re looking for, Tighe Lefebvre and his team will do their best to get it. “Every time we go through a renovation, there’s new products we have to research,” he said. “Sometimes it’s not always better, but it is worth looking into.” Lefebvre has been working as a contractor for 10 years now and after a decade of renovating homes in Maple Ridge he is excited to move forward with Terrafirma. “We’re trying to add work, add contacts, add employees,” Lefebvre said. “I think our next phase is going to try and find a lease location where we can actually have people come in and see what we have to offer in flooring and cabinetry.” This growth comes at a time where many other industries are faltering. “With the current situation in the real estate market, people are tending to stay where they are rather than try to sell in this market,” Lefebvre said. What’s more, many homeowners are looking for ways to pay down their mortgages faster by building or renovating basement suites. And this is good news for Terrafirma Industries, which, according to Lefebvre, had one of its best years last year. This year, as well, is looking to be another great one for the company. Lefebvre has seen an increase in buyers choosing homes with lower price tags in order to save money for post-purchase renovations. “In the last year, we’ve probably had about a half dozen clients that we’ve gone out and looked at homes before they’ve purchased them and supplied quotes for them,” Lefebvre said. This trend allows prospective homebuyers the option to update their new home to a style they want in a way

that saves them money. The updates can be anything from new kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, to cabinets and flooring. “People are finding a house they like, it might not be what they want, but they’re finding that, with it being a buyers’ market, they can lower their offer and incorporate the renovation costs into their offer so they’re still where they want to be with their price point,” Lefebvre said.

“We have all the right people to take the project from start to finish” Tighe Lefebvre, owner Another new trend is the growing popularity of environmentally friendly products. While most green products are still the more expensive option, Lefebvre thinks it’s important to have that option available to clients, even if they choose something else. “A lot of the customers are willing to pay the extra dollar to have an eco-friendly product, to do their part in helping the environment.” The majority of the work Terrafirma does in the Maple Ridge area is still renovations in homes, where an owner has lived there for many years. “A lot of our work is where people have been in their houses for 10 to 15 years and they’re looking to update and they’re looking to freshen up,” said Lefebvre. Homeowners looking to spruce up

their current digs can find anything they need from Terrafirma. From the initial demolition and remodeling to flooring installation and painting, Terrafirma Industries is a well-rounded contracting firm. “We’re basically a full renovation contractor, if you can dream it, we can build it” Lefebvre said. And with such a large expanse of work, Lefebvre works hard to make renovations as painless as possible for homeowners. “We take care of everything from the demolition right through to the finishing,” he said. Hiring Terrafirma Industries means hiring a team of contractors and subcontractors who can do it all. Lefebvre strongly believes in using his own subcontractors for the more specific parts of a renovation, such as plumbing and electrical. “Once they come to us, they can rest assured we have all the right people to take the project from start to finish,” he said. And with 10 years experience working as a contractor in Maple Ridge, Lefebvre certainly knows the right people. “It’s still a small-town feel,” he said. “It’s a nice, close-knit community. We enjoy working in the area and supporting local dealers and suppliers.” And people get to know your company, too. Much of the growth Terrafirma Industries has experienced in the past few years is because of referrals within the community. “Most of our referral work comes from our existing customers, designers and from realtors who trust us to take good care of their clients,” Lefebvre said. “It’s word of mouth that drives our business.” A recommendation from previous clients helps spread the word, for any business, but for Terrafirma it’s especially important. Contracting is a big industry and with many companies to choose from, it’s not always easy to know which one is best for your renovation. That’s why Lefebvre suggests checking the Better Business Bureau when looking into hiring a contractor. That way you’ll know what you’re getting and avoid any nasty surprises or shady contractors. As for Terrafirma Industries, Lefebvre’s goal is to make it a one-stop place for all renovations, big or small, and do it in a way that feels like a family-owned business. He hopes that by opening a storefront location, this welcoming attitude will bring in new clients. “You can sit down, look over plans, look at cabinets and counter tops, and get an idea of what’s available for you,” Lefebvre said. “A place to come in and have a look at all we have to offer.” While a location hasn’t been found, yet, it’s only a matter of time. For now he encourages you to visit www.terrafirmaindustries.ca to view current projects. Striving to continue growth, not only in Maple Ridge, but the Lower Mainland as well.

Five Facts about Meadows Gardens GolF club by Brett Saunders

4 Memberships are available and entitle the holder to many special privileges.

5 Meadow Gardens offers a professionally run golf academy for golfers of every skill level.

When Brett Saunders decided to moved to Canada in the late 1990s, the Great White North was still a little behind his native Australia as far as opportunities for golfers to get premier coaching. “There were a lot of young kids over here that were really eager to get better at the game,” the PGA of Australia golfer says. “I felt that an academy with an holistic approach should be developed to assist them in improving their knowledge and guide them in chasing their dreams.”

“We’re here to listen. We’re here to help the player. Period. We will tailor a coaching program to best suit the player’s needs, not ours.” Brett Saunders, co-founder of Saunders Rodgers Performance Golf Academy After teaming up with PGA of Canada professional Scott Rodgers, the coaching duo began offering their services at Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows. Saunders Rodgers Performance Golf Academy, located at 19675 Meadow Gardens Way, now houses state-of-art-technology capable of examining every movement a player makes from tee to green. “We are all about the Player. Regardless of how much time it takes to improve someone’s game, our team of coaches will provide undivided attention until

desired results are achieved. It is a true team effort here at the Academy and it is a place where a family atmosphere is promoted,” Saunders says, adding the facilities offered by both Meadow Gardens GC and Saunders Rodgers Performance Academy would have had him mesmerized when he started golfing at age 10.

some comprehensive coaching both on and off the golf course, providing him with the tools allowing him to get back on track to achieving his goal. “The great news is that recently this young lad has earned a golf scholarship to the University of Idaho.”

The world-class Precision Putting Studio uses both the Quintic Biomechanics and Ball Roll software combined with four high-speed cameras record the players’ movements simultaneously. This allows both the coach and player to analyze every detail of the putting stroke, and allows the coach to link the biomechanics of the stroke to the physics of the golf ball. “We are the only putting studio in the country that combines this level of technology with a personalized coaching plan allowing the student to hole more putts leading to lower scores,” Saunders says. And giving those young players every advantage possible has certainly paid off for many of the students. Saunders recalls one junior golfer who arrived at the academy with designs on playing golf at a post-secondary institution. “He wanted to go to a US College on a Golf Scholarship, but he was off-track at the time,” Saunders says, adding the young player just needed

It’s not only youths who have benefited from all the amenities at the academy. Seasoned players looking to gain a competitive edge come in for workshops just as frequently and make use of the technology to simply increase their enjoyment level. “While utilizing all the great facilities, academy players, members and guests of Meadow Gardens can work on their games year round with the surrounding snow-capped mountain views as a back- drop.” For Saunders, there’s never any pressure on people who want to begin golfing at any stage in their life. In fact, it’s part of the reason he loves coaching. “You don’t have to win a golf tournament, be a tour player or a college player, you just need to have the passion to improve YOUR GAME to enjoy the full learning experience at our academy,” he says.

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Bob Quinnell

1 Obtain professional advice on financing options available today to best suit your needs.

2 Work with a real estate agent you trust who will provide a review of properties in your price range.

3 Select a building inspector in advance. Your real estate agent

can give you several to pick from.

Royal LePage navigates ‘unpredictable’ 4 Have your real estate agent outline the extra expenses you will have when the sale is completing.

5 Ask if your real estate company has a list of moving

companies and all the utilities and services that need to be notified of your moving.

real estate market for new and old buyers The local real estate market was a much different animal prior to the 2008 financial meltdown, according to realtor Bob Quinnell. “With the new economy, you never know when it’s going to get busy. I’ve seen it busy in July and absolutely dead in July,” says the manager of Maple Ridge’s Royal LePage, located at 11933 – 224 St. “The markets are unpredictable. They’re very regional now. We used to be able to apply statistics and it would be for the whole Lower Mainland. That doesn’t work anymore … you really have to be an expert in the market you’re in.” But the localized expertise Quinnell and his team of nearly 70 sales people offer the community puts Royal LePage’s clients at a distinct advantage when it comes to marketing property. “The last few months, we’ve sold 50 per cent of our own listings – that’s unheard of,” the realtor says, noting his realtors adopt a team mentality to help each other’s respective clients. “Whatever benefits the client, in the end, benefits us.” Quinnell says one of Royal LePage’s main goals is focusing on education, especially for the new buyers who need to understand the market in the prices ranges available to them. His Royal LePage office is also home to Client First Mortgage Solutions, an in-house company that helps clients go through their finances and make independent recommendations. But it’s not just the new buyers making use of all the extra assistance Royal LePage offers. Many older clients, who may have lived in the same home for

decades, often need to be brought up to date with the current pressures and demands of real estate. Many of these people are downsizing from full-size houses to condominiums and Royal LePage realtors are there with them at every step.

“If clients are choosing to market their property, we’re the best choice, from a statistical point of view.” Realtor Bob Quinnell, Royal LePage Realty Even consulting with these clients on how to reduce all the belongings they’ve accumulated over the years is just one of those small things Quinnell believes can make a huge difference as people transition in life. “They need somebody who they can trust, and they trust you more when you can educate them instead of pressuring them.” But for Quinnell, keeping his staff informed is just as important as educating clients. A lawyer visits the office each month to share information with sales reps on new laws affecting real estate sales,

as well as answer any questions realtors may have. Furthermore, Quinnell also offers his employees training workshops at the end of each week. Sales people learn about everything from the escarpment area in Maple Ridge to the proper way of understanding titles and easements. This focus on education means it’s been much easier for both clients and salespeople to adapt to the changing market. “People are coming out here to buy a condo now,” Quinnell says, adding that is the biggest change he’s seen since he started working in real estate sales 50 years ago. “Most people are going for condos because that’s what affordable. That’s a big part of the business. I think a lot of people, if they could, they would still buy the house with the white picket fence. But the prices are just too high.” Quinnell says Maple Ridge has transformed in a significant way because of these developments and the new residents they attract. “The buyers move here for two reasons: one is price and the other is community, they realize we have a lot to offer. From our parks to just our general feel of the town, the sports programs for kids … our schools are very, very good. All those things that make up a community are very appealing.” “Since we live in such a tight knit community, our office embraces the responsibility to give back to numerous non-profits. It is our belief that supporting the community you live in is a must.”

Chartwell Willow Retirement Community creating customized care. At Willow Retirement Community in Maple Ridge, the goal is to create customized care to meet the individual needs of every resident, says sales and marketing manager Wendy Upton. Having been in the community for the past 11 years, she says Willow Retirement Community has been able to establish those strong bonds with the community and its staff. With 100 independent suites that now include an Assisted Living Option, 20 CARE suites and 14 in its specialized memory care department, Willow offers a wide range of options for Maple Ridge’s growing senior population. “But its biggest selling point can’t be calculated using numbers,” Upton said. It’s the overall attitude a resident

“Many of our residents continue to play vital roles in Maple Ridge, especially with their volunteer work” Wendy Upton, Willow Manor Sales and Marketing Manager experiences when they first walk in. “A number of our staff have been with us since we first opened our doors,” notes Upton. “It provides a real comfort level for residents knowing they are coming to live in a home that has a real sense of

community and belonging.” Part of building that relationship comes with Willow’s emphasis on community-driven activities. Upton says when Willow hosts an event, they want to make it open to more than just the people living under their roof. The goal is to incorporate family and community.

Michelle Zavaglia, lifestyles and program manager, is bartender for Ken G., David B., Bill S. and Les R. at Willow Manor.

“Seniors have so much to give back to the community. Many of our residents continue to play vital roles in Maple Ridge, especially with their volunteer work.” So whether it’s a scheduled fashion show, or a major performer like Steve Elliot as Elvis, the emphasis includes more than just the residents. Upton says staff are especially excited about plans to host an Open House March 30th 1 - 3 p.m. The event will feature entertainer Big Daddy Jay Phillips, a Vegas-style crooner whose repertoire extends to musical theatre, Broadway hits and Rat Pack favourites.

“Its a time for the entire community to come in and see what Willow is all about.” Willow will also be providing light refreshments and the display suites will be open so that anyone interested in finding out what it is really like living in a Senior Residence can just pop in and have a look. Upton says residents, whether they are independent or require greater care, benefit greatly from the social emphasis placed at Willow Senior Living Residence. “It really puts a smile on their faces.” Ensuring that residents and family are comfortable is what has made the past decade so successful at this Senior Residence, she emphasizes. Willow offers a wide range of care in everything from independent living for seniors looking to downsize, to long-term care for those who need medical attention. The residence can also handle short-term stays for people between homes or those who suffer an in-home disaster making their homes temporarily unlivable. Willow also has a unique care program known as Memory Care. It’s a highly personalized approach to help residents who are experiencing memory loss. Meeting individual priorities of residents with programs like Memory Care ensures a better quality of life for everyone involved, said Upton. The comfortable, classic architecture of the Willow adds to the comfort level of its residents, she added, but its real strength lies in its experienced staff. “We want residents to feel like they are part of a larger community, that they have a network of family, friends, and staff who have their best interests at heart.”

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Sandra Taylor

1 #1 ingredient to success is a passion for what you do.

2 Taking a business course before opening

your business is a necessity.

3 Always follow the books when it comes to accounting. 4 Always treat your customers and your staff the way you would want to be treated.

5 Work hard and have fun!

Sandra Taylor, owner of Westgate Flower Garden left, and Lauren Kozol, 16, look over floral displays. Lauren has been coming into Westgate Flower Garden since she was 5-years-old and now she works there.

Westgate Flower Garden Cultivates Deep Roots In The Community. A few months after opening her flower shop in 2000, Sandra Taylor started adding children’s workshops. She remembered being struck by the talents of a kindergarten student who showed up to the workshop to make floral centrepieces. “She had a real gift,” the owner of Westgate Flower Garden recalls. “So when she got into high school, she did her work experience with me and now she’s working for me.” Taylor credits that type of long-term insight into the community for much of her company’s success. And continuing on with that strategy is how she plans to keep the business growing in the future. “It’s not just selling flowers — it’s having my eyes open all around,” she says.

“Everybody that walks through our door whether 4 years old, a youth or a senior, is so very special. It’s my job and my staff’s job to connect with them and really hear what they want.” Sandra Taylor, Westgate Flower Garden owner “Who would have thought when the employee was five that she would have ended up on my payroll?” Those children’s workshops are still running 14 years later and the florist remains tuned into the little people

and youth of this community. For every regular client who knows exactly what he or she is looking for, Taylor says there is always the joy of assisting the ever-expanding base of new customers in need of a little more guidance. A gentleman looking to surprise his sweetheart with a bouquet may feel a bit overwhelmed by the flower selection when he drops in on the 900-square-foot shop on Dewdney Trunk Road, just off 203rd Street. That’s when either Taylor or one of her six employees begins asking the basics the customer may not have even contemplated, such as the occasion being celebrated or his partner’s favourite colours and whether he or she like scented flowers. “Whether it’s one flower or an arrangement, that part is not really important to me. It’s important that we connect with them and make them feel that we know what they’re talking about.” And if a bride-to-be has no clue what flowers she would like, the flower shop looks to the client’s personality for inspiration. “Getting to know our brides through their flowers is one of the greatest privileges of this business,” Taylor says. “I can see so many brides-to-be in a day, yet I never tire of meeting them. Capturing their dream and vision is some of what we do best!” In fact, it’s that focus on realizing one’s dreams that brought the small business owner to where she is today. The mother of two originally trained as a florist in Ireland before hopping the

pond with her husband Nigel 25 years ago. Once her family settled on the West Coast in the early 1990s, Taylor continued honing her craft as she drew up plans for Westgate Flower Garden. “I had a dream and vision before I ever opened my store,” she says, “that I wanted a flower store on a corner.” The location just off the Lougheed Highway fit the bill perfectly, and the size of the retail space lent itself to a walk-in cooler and garden esthetic that worked its way into the business’s name. “We do all the elements of a flower store and more,” Taylor says, adding people can simply roam about and pluck flowers of their own choosing just like they would in a garden, or choose from some artistic ready-made creations. “The garden element, for me, gives it more of a relaxed feel.” And the hassle-free atmosphere Taylor has cultivated for nearly 15 years has kept people returning to the shop for memorials, birthdays, graduations, Valentine’s Day, and so much more. “Something that a gentleman said to me one day was, ‘Wow – you make buying flowers fun,’” she says. “This surely made my heart sing!” “They don’t have to spend a fortune or they can spend a fortune – there’s no judgment.” We are just so grateful to have a strong stand as a florist in this community and beyond.

Five Consumer Tips by Justin Fuller

1 Size matters. Check out the space you have in your home and determine what will fit and still look good. Then, always carry a tape measure when you go furniture shopping.

2 When it comes to furniture, don’t let what’s on the floor fool

you. Most of the items have lots of options when it comes to colour, fabric and finishing.

3 Again, with furniture it’s important to know whether it will suit your lifestyle. Some furniture is built more strongly to suit different families.

4 If you’re looking at mattresses, don’t let price be the

final arbiter. A higher price does not necessarily mean a better mattress.

5 Don’t overspend on appliance features you know deep down you’re never going to use. Get what you really need and save some money.

Bruce and Dave Fuller of Fuller Watson BrandSource

Good pricing & selection exist at Fuller Watson There aren’t many stores in Maple Ridge that can claim to have grown up with the community, but Fuller Watson is certainly one of them. Since 1924, Fuller Watson has been an integral part of the community’s shopping experience, starting as a general store that continued right up until the 1970’s before eventually becoming the furniture, appliance and bedding store that people now associate with the name. Today, the fourth generation of the Fuller family is still at the helm, living, working and investing locally the way earlier members of the family did. “We’re very proud of the way this store and our family have been a part of the growth of Maple Ridge,” says Justin Fuller, one of the two sons of current owner Bruce Fuller presently working at the store. “Like the community, we’ve made significant changes over the years, and we’ve managed to keep up with the needs of our customers by providing quality products and service at aggressive prices.” In today’s marketplace, Justin argues, that’s not always easy to accomplish given that so many local residents are convinced there’s no place to shop locally. “We had one couple come in a while ago who told us they’d gone looking for furniture elsewhere but they ended up coming to see us because we were able to supply exactly what they wanted at a price that worked for them. Today they get rave reviews about their furniture from friends who are always surprised when they tell them it came from Fuller Watson. “We like that kind of story because it’s what we’ve been telling people for more than 80 years. You can get top quality furniture and appliances right here in town because we’re part of BrandSource, whose 3,400 stores make up $10 billion worth of buying power, which allows us to offer our customers excellent prices because we can buy for less.” That’s so important for consumers who are highly price-conscious these days given the tough economic situation so many people find themselves in. “You have to treat people right,” says

Justin, “and that starts by providing them with pricing that makes sense to them. BrandSource gives us the ability to keep prices down, we can show people our prices are as good as or better than they can find anywhere else.” This fourth generation retailer has had customer service drummed into him all his life because his family has depended on the loyalty and goodwill of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents for the better part of 90 years. He estimates 95 percent of their customers live in the two communities, so he knows it pays to be good to people. “We try to hire locally whenever possible (there are currently fourteen people working at Fuller Watson, most of whom have been there for more than ten years) because we want our staff and customers to know each other outside of the store,” Justin says.

“We’re very proud of the way this store and our family have been a part of the growth of Maple Ridge” Justin Fuller, Fuller Watson “We provide continuity in terms of long-term relationships between staff and customers, which provides peace of mind to customers. We’ve been dealing with the same people year after year for decades; they know and trust us to take care of them, and that keeps them coming back.” That loyalty is not something Fuller Watson takes for granted, however. To keep people coming back they offer in-house appliance repair staff, quality financing programs to make it easier for people to buy, local contact when customers need help (instead of the

“centralized” service offered by chain stores that is usually based three time zones away in Ontario), and convenient delivery and installation service. “I’m biased, naturally, but I truly believe our level of service is exceptional when compared to a lot of other furniture and appliance stores,” says Justin. “I think the fact that we live and work locally keeps us close to our customers, which means we’re in constant contact with those people. ” Part of making things perfect involves dealing with quality product lines in the first place. Justin says a lot of locals aren’t aware that Fuller Watson offers the same brand names people drive kilometres to find in other communities. “In the appliance department we deal exclusively with GE, GE Profile, GE Cafe, and GE Monogram because they are good quality at a good price,” he says. “For furniture, Palliser, La-Z-Boy, Ashley, England and Stylus are our top brands, and when it comes to beds we offer Simmons and Beautyrest, two of the best lines for mattresses in the country.” “You really don’t have to drive elsewhere to find furniture, appliances or beds because we offer the same great product lines right here in Maple Ridge, at prices that are always comparable or better than other stores.” Justin says his family, along with the staff at Fuller Watson, have every intention of being part of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows for another 80-plus years, and they’ll do that by continuing to emphasize the four things that have made the company a leader for so long – local, responsive ownership, buying power that leads to great pricing, and exceptional customer service at all times. “I’m certain that if we never lose sight of those four important factors, we’ll be able to keep going for decades to come,” says Justin. “The key will be to convince people that they can get what they need and want right here in town. To that end, we ask anyone looking for appliances, a bed or furniture to come see us before making any decisions, and give a local retailer the opportunity to earn their business with great prices and quality service. You owe it to yourself.”

by Hanna Vorlicek

Volunteer: Donating time and skills contributes to your sense of community belonging and sense of purpose while allowing you to meet new people.

2

Partner with local business: Organizing an event with a local business has a number of benefits. It helps sustain the local economy and individual businesses, as well as allows owners to give back to their community.

3

Collaborate with other service/ community organizations: Partnering with other groups can lead to significant cost-sharing while widening the pool of ideas, expertise, resources and opportunities for both organizations.

4

Engage your neighbours: Building relationships with neighbours makes for safer and more secure neighbourhoods and combats social isolation.

5

Participate, participate, participate: Take advantage of the programs, services and events your community offers. Successful programs, workshops and events create a positive community synergy, which generates more of the same.

The image captures the kind of enjoyment, health and vitality the Pitt Meadows Community Association is trying to foster through its events, says Vorlicek, president of the PMCA. “Essentially, we are bringing people together for a better Pitt Meadows . . . building on what we have locally.” Created in 2011, the PMCA’s aim is to nurture community development by hosting events and setting up opportunities for dialogue and cooperation between businesses, residents, families and other stakeholders. As Pitt Meadows shares so many services with Maple Ridge, residents often had to leave their own community to take advantage of them, says Vorlicek. “I was noticing other communities offering all sorts of events. But people don’t always have the time, money or even a means to get to them,” she says. “Why not have events here where people and their families can walk to them?” Pitt Meadows has a wealth of local assets – particularly in its own citizens – it can and should continue to build on, Vorlicek believes. Tapping into local talent and building relationships with like-minded partners – such as the city, service providers and area businesses – PMCA has established a core of popular events, such as the Osprey Village Days. Similar to a community barbecue, the one-day event takes place in the months of July or August. It features bands, local vendors and artisans, as

well as crafts and activities for kids. “The firefighters run the hose up the ladder to rig up a sprinkler. The kids love it,” says Vorlicek. At the opposite end of the calendar, PMCA and Osprey Village host an annual Christmas tree lighting, complete with carolers, Santa Claus, hot chocolate and treats. In February, the Pitt Meadows Community Organization will organize another Family Day event. Similar to last year, movies and games and other fun-filled activities allow families, friends and neighbours to gather during the new provincial holiday and meet new people. “I like the idea of Family Day,” says Vorlicek. “When people come together, meet and build on those relationships, you create a stronger community, both socially and economically, at a grassroots level.” And this year, the organization will be celebrating the sixth anniversary of its popular Hockey Day on Canada’s birthday, with the event’s proceeds going to support local children who want to play the sport but otherwise couldn’t afford it. A completely volunteer-run organization, the PMCA relies on the talents and ideas of local residents, businesses and community groups to realize its varied events, workshops and seminars. “If someone is good at something or has an idea for an event, we’ll help make it happen,” says Vorlicek. “It’s how we started. It’s what we do.”

PMCA’s diverse workshops have included couponing seminars and teaching parents strategies to help their children sleep better. Both topics, sparked by local residents’ individual skills, proved extremely popular, said Vorlicek. New volunteers or partners with talents or resources they can share with PMCA can also help Pitt Meadows flourish, she said. And it doesn’t have to be a big commitment. “For example, someone who is savvy with social media could take an hour a week to update our website,” says Vorlicek. “There are lots of little things people can do that are a huge help.” For individuals with schedules that don’t allow them to volunteer, simply coming out to enjoy PMCA’s events enriches the community, their own lives and creates the impetus required to set up other programs, noted Vorlicek. Donations made at the events help ensure they continue, as the PMCA doesn’t get any government funding and relies solely on in-kind or monetary donations. “Quite simply, we rely on the goodwill of the community to sustain our events,” she said. Right now, most PMCA planning occurs around kitchen tables. But in line with its cooperative values, the non-profit group wants to partner with another community organization to secure office space and share ideas, as well as costs. Collaboration is always key in putting on public events that create a sense of community and build better neighbourhoods, according to Vorlicek. “It’s all about playing in the sandbox with everybody,” she says.

Five BrightPath tiPs by Linda Aquilini

1

Communication with families regarding illnesses and how they are spread, as well as strictly monitoring the incubation period.

2

Daily and weekly checklists are standard, and include such things as: toys/equipment being sanitized on a daily basis, and disinfecting the sand and water tables each day, etc.

3

Centres with kitchens serve snacks that are planned by a licensed nutritionist and prepared by Food Safe-qualified staff. Centres that are not equipped with a kitchen will continuously encourage families to provide healthy choices.

4

Outdoor play and physical activity is implemented at least twice a day, and children are dressed appropriately.

5

Proper hand washing, as well as techniques for covering sneezes and coughs are taught and supervised by the staff.

Always friendly, smiling staff at BrightPath Early Learning and Childcare Centre.

BrightPath provides a brighter future for childcare and early learning Quality childcare and educational opportunities will always be a necessity, which is why BrightPath Early Learning and Child Care will always be in demand by parents who want the very best for their children. With two locations to serve Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, BrightPath offers local families a variety of options, opportunities and experiences for children between newborn to 12 years old. Within British Columbia, BrightPath also serves Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Port Moody and a new self-contained location in Surrey/ Langley. Linda Aquilini is the provincial manager for BrightPath’s BC Operations, and part of the team of 50 centres across Canada, and growing. BrightPath’s company mission statement is to“Provide the best intellectual, social and physical child development, delivered by capable and nurturing staff within the best environments.” This, Aquilini, says, is what sets BrightPath apart from other childcare centers. “All children deserve quality care and educational opportunities,” says Aquilini. “Our goal is to provide families with the programs they need to ensure their children’s future starts bright, and continues to get brighter.” To do that, BrightPath Early Learning Child Care provides a variety of services in Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, including infant and toddler care, pre-school 3-5 yrs. daycare and after-school care. The curriculum used in each program is based on age-appropriate activities and educational principles that emphasize social, language, physical, cognitive, morals and more. “Much of what we do is grounded in play because we believe that chil-

dren’s minds are like sponges that will soak up anything that is presented in a way that appeals to them,”says Aquilini.“To make it engaging, BrightPath employs modern technology when appropriate, such as the Hatch computer system, which is a fun way for children to learn at a pace that ensures they’ve grasped the skills they need before allowing them to move to the next level. This program is what separates Early Learning from simply a daycare.” The Hatch program, she explains, works hand-in-hand with the Frog Street education curriculum every centre uses. BrightPath boasts several full-time Education Coaches to ensure the programs are fresh, fun, and provide a strong skill base and a love for learning. The company also has a dietician on staff for healthy and well-rounded meals to feed the bellies. Aquilini notes that the Maple Ridge/ Pitt Meadows staff members hired by BrightPath–all 32 of them locally - are fully qualified for the roles they fill, and all instructors are certified as Early Childhood Educators. In addition, staffing levels are carefully monitored to ensure proper child to instructor ratios are maintained in every one of the organization’s facilities. The company’s commitment to excellence highlights that,“All BrightPath’s childcare staff strive to give consistent loving care to your child and provide them with a happy environment, rich with learning experiences. We encourage parents to visit our busy, happy, creative rooms to see children

at play. We want them to realize the validity of play… the importance of what the child is learning, just as much as how they learn.” It’s important to note, says BrightPath’s B.C. manager, that families have a lot of say as to what their child or children do at either local centre because parental input is crucial to ensure each child benefits fully from the curriculum. Every Centre keeps an open channel of communication with parents - for ideas and suggestions, or how a child shared something that they learned at daycare.“Parents are proud to see their child grow, learn, and be healthy and happy.”Aquilini adds“It’s a competitive world out there, and BrightPath wants to give the children an early start to a lifelong love of learning.” “We certainly have set programs, but we can also tailor these to the individual needs of the child,”says Aquilini.“This also applies to children that require extra support, who are always welcome at our centres.” So, is BrightPath Early Learning and Child Care the place for your children? BrightPath is currently accepting applications for all programs, as spaces have recently opened up in both Centres– at BrightPath Maple Ridge (216 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road), open 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and BrightPath Maple Ridge West (Fairview elementary school), open 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. “We think the best way to find out for yourself whether BrightPath is the right fit for your children is to come and visit us, and see our Centres in action.” To learn more about BrightPath Early Learning and Child Care, call 604463-2188 or 604-465-5582 for an appointment or visit the company’s website, www.brightpathkids.com.

We stand behind all our products.” Jeff co-owns the store with his wife, Tammy. She says they’re committed to ensuring only the best products are

How do we build a community? Each piece rests upon the other to create a beautiful construction.

so that everyone can enjoy their community arts centre.

how.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Arts Council understands this completely. As operators of The ACT Arts Centre & Theatre and the Maple Ridge Art Gallery, they know that finding support for the arts is often a challenge. However, the arts are critical to the well-being of a community because they provide an outlet that most other forms of expression can’t replicate. The Canada Council for the Arts notes that, “Arts and cultural activities are at the heart of communities – they make communities more attractive places to live, they help bring a community to life, they define a community’s unique characteristics, they attract tourists and they help communities compete economically around the world.” The ACT Arts Centre & Theatre and the Maple Ridge Art Gallery not only provide valuable opportunities to showcase talent on a local, national, and international level, but also contribute to the health, physical and economic well-being of the community. The arts have value beyond simply aesthetic beauty. As an example, music and dance boast numerous health benefits, ranging from reduced stress to physical fitness. MRPM Arts Council Marketing Coordinator Erin Brown-John notes that “dance is an important means of self-expression that provides many opportunities for personal growth through goal setting, life-long learning and personal achievement.”

At The ACT Arts Centre & Theatre you will find a wide range of affordable artistic and educational programming. “Our programs, exhibitions, and performances facilitate social interaction, participation, and skill-building through arts discovery and exploration.” These qualities are especially crucial for youth in their developmental stages. The ACT aims to provide a positive outlet by nurturing creativity, encouraging extra-curricular peer groups and furthering a sense of pride in the community. “The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council provides lots of opportunities for youth, starting from very early ages, through its arts programs at the ACT in Maple Ridge and at South Bonson Community Centre in Pitt Meadows and other locations,” says Brown-John. “We continue to introduce new and diverse programming each season, connecting artists with patrons, increasing opportunities and accessibility with programs and performances for all ages.” Simply put, The ACT Arts Centre & Theatre is dedicated to its motto: “Bringing Arts to the Heart of our Community.” It’s to fulfill this promise that the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council, in partnership with other organizations, individuals and governments, promotes and supports a wide variety of disciplines in the arts.

“We value excellent customer service and inclusiveness, and work with other not-for-profit arts and community organizations on events and programming.” “All of this is made possible as a result of the endless, endless hours from our amazing team of more than 100 volunteers, whom we are very fortunate to have working along side us.” Brown-John says the development of The ACT and the Maple Ridge Art Gallery have been “instrumental” in the promotion and support of the arts in our community. As one example the dance community has embraced The ACT as a home for dance competitions and festivals. The venue has great rehearsal and performance space, and remains the venue of choice for many local dance school recitals. The Arts Council provides plenty of inspiration for local dancers through professional touring performances such as Ballet Kelowna’s Innovation on March 23rd. “I see the impact that arts and culture have on our community,” says BrownJohn, “from the inquisitive or excited looks on patron’s faces as they exit the theatre, to the glow on the arts program participants as they carry art work home.” It is through accessible art forms, such as music, comedy, theatre, visual arts, and dance that communities are able to connect and promote positive opportunities. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are dynamic communities that require an equally dynamic platform for expression. The ACT continues to be a source of pride for the community by showcasing the talent of its citizens and artists. And, as Brown-John says, “that’s a great thing to be a part of.”

Five reasons to consider legal advice

1

by John Becker

The Wills, Estates and Succession Act comes into force March 31, 2014. It makes significant changes to the law regarding wills and estates. To quote the Provincial Government press release: “People who already have a will may wish to sit down with their lawyers to ensure their wishes are upheld”. Remember, there is a reason it’s called “legal” advice.

2

Your legal relationships in the family business need to be properly documented. A legal fight with family is always awful, so do what you can to avoid it.

3

Family business succession planning is a process that does not happen overnight. It can take years to put in place the proper legal, tax planning and mentorship. Start talking now.

4

When spouses split up there are a host of legal issues that need resolving. We offer collaborative law and mediation options, along with traditional Supreme Court and Provincial Court litigation services.

5

In our real estate practice, we are seeing an increasing number of parents and children buying homes together. Often the parents put in cash from a downsizing, and the children agree to pay the mortgage. The mortgage company usually requires everyone sign the mortgage. A co-ownership agreement clarifies the relationship – who is paying what, what triggers a sale and how the proceeds are divided.

Terry Becker

Becker & Co. – Not the law firm you thought you knew Becker and Co. Lawyers has been around for many years, but it’s no longer the small-town firm you thought you knew. Yes, we’ve expanded significantly from the three-person office we were back in the early 2000s, when founder John Becker was the firm’s single lawyer, and his wife Terry and an assistant provided support. In the intervening years since John and Terry decided Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge had room for a larger, more regionally focused law firm, and so charted their vision for growth, the law firm has taken off in every way imaginable. “We decided to take our 20-plus years of goodwill and expertise and do something with it,” says John. “I wasn’t ready to retire, so we decided to step it up.” Today, Becker and Co. is home to 10 lawyers and articling students (with more to come), plus the necessary complement of support staff, who handle most kinds of law required by the residents of Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and beyond. The only general area in which the law firm doesn’t provide services is criminal law, but refers that work to highly-experienced professionals in that area. “The first few lawyers we sought out were generalists like me,” says John. “But as the years went by, we found the need to provide much greater specialization because our clients needed more focused and sophisticated advice. This had the added benefit of allowing our generalists to focus more on the areas of law they enjoy, so it’s been a win-win for both lawyers and clients.” The specialization evolution has also provided other benefits, particularly the development of programs for business clients with particular needs. In addition to greater specialization, the firm has tried to provide greater value added services to its business clients. The corporate services package for business clients, for instance, includes free notarization services, 10 per cent off of personal estate planning services, and no-charge summary advice that encourages clients to call whenever they need answers so small concerns don’t turn into big problems. In addition to corporate services, there is a program that helps franchisors with a

broad range of administrative services, and not just preparing documents: the Get Paid collections program for helping companies deal with outstanding receivables; the Strata Legal Protection Plan (recently rebranded as “StrataNet BC”) for assisting strata corporations in the handling of legal matters; and the TAG (Transition Advisory Group) Team, which helps businesses deal with transition and succession matters. “What we’re trying to focus on are value-based relationships with clients,” says Terry. “We want to be their trusted legal advisors for the long term, and we believe giving clients more than just transaction services is just smart business when it comes to building those relationships.”

“We’ve always believed we couldn’t be as successful as we wanted to be without becoming fully involved in the community.” John Becker, owner For instance, John says that to build these kinds of relationships with new clients, the first 30 minutes for any new legal consultation are free. This gives a client an introduction to the law firm, a summary of the client’s options, and an opportunity to weigh those before any costs are incurred. Now, while Becker and Co. Lawyers has grown significantly over the past decade, John says it’s important for people to know that the law firm stays true to its “triple bottom line” philosophy of “profits, people and community.” Every member of the law firm is made

John Becker, owner aware of that commitment before they start work. “In fact, we attract and retain people who hold the same values. These shared values are integral to the law firm’s success and future. Our people are as pro-active about community as we are,” says John, alluding to himself and Terry. “We’ve always believed we couldn’t be as successful as we wanted to be without becoming fully involved in the community. It’s one of the reasons Terry and I have been so active in politics, social concerns, economic development and so much more through the years. It’s the reason we’re still involved.” Terry adds that community involvement is a lot easier when the people who work at Becker and Co. are so diversified – intentionally so. “We needed younger staff who could grow with the law firm, and we needed people who reflect the diversity in our community, so we went out and found them. Today the staff covers all age ranges, and offers service in a variety of languages, including French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Romanian, Punjabi, Hindi, Slovak, Czech, Dutch, German, Afrikaans, and English. “We’re very proud of what Becker and Co. Lawyers has become,” says John. “Terry and I believe we knew what opportunities existed, and the kind of service model our community wanted. We took that vision and ran with it. Now we have something very special to offer our clients, co-workers and community. We’re definitely not the law firm we were a decade ago, and the future looks even brighter.”

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Chantal and Wendy

1

Don’t be afraid to ask your nail technician what products they are using, especially for acrylic and UV gels. At Cloud Nine Nail Bar, all customers who opt for nail enhancements receive a small card with all the relevant details so they know exactly what products have been used on their hands.

2

Make sure your salon is only using clean, sanitary tools and equipment. Ask the technician what the sanitization protocol is if it’s not evident.

3

Keep your gel and shellac polishes tip top. Limit applying moisturizers before application of polishes, as this can keep the product from adhering. Never pick polish off. Return to the salon to have it properly removed, and don’t allow your technician to use a drill to do so, as this can damage nail beds.

4

Nail health begins with the cuticles. Only dead cuticle skin should be trimmed; never cut your live cuticles as this can cause damage and leave you susceptible to an infection. Nudge cuticles back with a sterilized pusher.

5

Pamper yourself. Your pedicure and manicure should be a pleasurable experience. Caring for your hands and feet on a regular basis, even if you don’t like fancy polish or artificial nails, is great for your overall wellbeing. You will leave feeling like you’re on Cloud Nine!

Wendy Dockerty, left, and Chantal Schutz of Cloud Nine Nail Bar.

People and community are the cornerstones of Cloud Nine’s Nail Bar’s success Rain streams down the huge glass windows that surround Cloud Nine Nail Bar, but inside the salon it is bright, airy and cheerful. An assortment of woman recline in lounge chairs with their tootsies immersed in stainless steel basins of warm, fragrant water. Some read while sipping a specialty organic tea or coffee. Others succumb to the tranquility of the experience with head tilted back and eyes closed. At the other end of the spacious salon, women chat with technicians, hands draped across immaculate manicure tables. Cloud Nine is a study in contrasts, and that’s a good thing. It’s elegantly designed with turquiose, white and crystal accents, but the space is inviting and informal. As one facebook follower commented, “they are like the quintessential Tiffany Box!” The stylish salon is busy, yet the atmosphere is still relaxed and upbeat. It is modern and spotlessly clean without being austere, and evokes a spa atmosphere. The Cloud Nine’s effect is no happy accident. When partners Chantal Schutz and Wendy Dockerty envisioned opening Maple Ridge’s newest nail salon, they wanted to go beyond their customers’ expectations.

“Yes, we’re about indulgence … but we also want to enrich people’s social life and perhaps make meaningful connections with others.” Chantal Schutz,Cloud Nine Nail Bar Schutz, a Chartered Accountant, a nd Dockerty, a professional European trained Esthetician, were determined to provide clients a heavenly experience that left them feeling pampered and comfortable. For starters, one of the most striking

aspects of Cloud Nine is the fresh air environment. The harsh chemical smell associated with acrylic nails that assaults customers when they walk through the door of many salons is completely absent. In line with its owners’ ethos, Cloud Nine only uses cutting edge products that are environmentally and health conscious and, when possible, they will be introducing organic and vegan alternatives, said Schutz. At minimum, all the products they use are three-free meaning they do not contain formaldehyde, toulene and dibutyl phthalate. As such, the salon uses an odourless acrylic system that is created and manufactured by a Canadian company located in Burnaby. “There’s no unpleasant odour and it’s simple, clean and quick,” says Schutz There’s no legislation about air quality in the self-regulated salon business, but Cloud Nine has invested in the most advanced venting system available. The salon’s owners and staff are also “hyper-vigilant” about cleanliness, says Dockerty. “Some of our equipment is single-use only and the other tools are stainless steel which are properly sanitized after each use,” she says. Each sanitized tool is individually wrapped in protective packaging and only unwrapped for use on a single client. Cloud Nine’s commitment to the health and well-being of clients also extends to employees. “We are focused on staff development. We do a lot of in-house training with our suppliers,” says Schutz. All technicians, many who speak an additional language beyond English, also receive an education allowance. And within six months of being hired, staff members are encouraged to have their skills certified by the Beauty Council of Western Canada. From the beginning, Wendy and

Chantal believed that people would be the cornerstone to Cloud Nine’s success. “We want clients to be happy, but we want our staff to be happy, too. “We want them to have not just a job, but a career.” Providing clients with top tier products and services at a reasonable price is also a focus. “We’ve implemented a membership program with extras that helps people save money,” says Schutz. The nail bar offers a whole complement of spa and beauty services, such as massages, waxing, and enhancements to eyebrow and eyelashes. It caters to wide range of clientele. “Everybody is our customer. It’s pretty broad-based,” says Schutz. “We have little kids in here with their moms, parties, teen birthdays, wedding showers and 40th birthdays.” Cloud Nine is careful to cater to groups and not to rush them out the door. “We establish a space where people can create lifelong memories of significant moments,” says Dockerty. Cloud Nine also strives to create a sense of community at the salon. The salon recently hosted a jewelry party with a local designers Wildflower Designs and has started an in-house book club. The owners and staff connect with community outside the salon, as well. To date they have given generously to various sports teams looking for raffle baskets, donated over 30lbs of food to the Friends in Need Food Bank over the holidays, and were supportive of the Meadowridge School Grad Fashion Show. “Yes, we’re about indulgence and customers come to get a service,” says Schutz. “But we also want enrich people’s social life and perhaps make meaningful connections with others.” • For more information on Cloud Nine, its services or to book an appointment online visitcloudninenailbar.com/.

FIVE VEGGIE GARDEN TIPS

1

by Lidy Kok

Raised garden beds in a sunny location to warm the soil faster and have better drainage than regular garden beds. This results in an extended growing season which can increase your vegetable yields.

2

Fill raised beds with organically rich, fertile soil to result in more productive growth in less space.

3

Instead of flat beds, mound the soil into a rounded arc to result in a larger planting area.

4

Grow vining crops such as cucumbers, melons, pole beans, and peas vertically supported by stakes, trellises, cages or fencing for ease of harvest and maintenance, and to save space.

5

Use soaker hoses to maintain soil moisture throughout the season. They will also reduce fungal issues as the water only contacts the root zone instead of the leaves, flowers and fruit.

The knowledgeable and friendly staff at Amsterdam Greenhouses and Garden Centre.

Help from the family tree spurs greenhouse’s growth Lidy and Ron Kok immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in 1974 and started their business from the ground up. “Our business has been a family affair since we began 35 years ago. At that time, we had only one small greenhouse where we grew plants for the wholesale market. We have expanded over the years, one greenhouse at a time,” Lidy explains. “Initially, because of the demand in our community, we opened a small portion of our greenhouse to retail sales.” Since then, with the help of their children, Jennifer and Jason, as well as dedicated staff, the company has expanded its retail operation to what it is today – a garden centre that stocks not only bedding plants, but also vegetable and fruit plants, perennials, trees and shrubs, as well as an excellent selection of plant care products. “It was basically like living on a farm for us. We definitely had our jobs that we contributed to,” recalls Jennifer,

“It’s not just growing a plant – it’s a lifestyle.” Lidy Kok, co-owner and manager of Amsterdam Greenhouses and Garden Centre who now serves as assistant manager and spends her days off educating her own eight-year-old daughter in the ways of gardening. “You have to enjoy what you’re doing to be able to do it every day. What drives me is building relationships with our customers and inspiring them to be successful in their gardens. Expe-

riencing their excitement and sharing in their successes makes it even more rewarding to me!” The business model of growing and selling plants is just a small part of the company’s success, according to Lidy. Rather, it’s the focus on customer satisfaction that has propelled the family-owned business to where it is today. “It’s not just our prices, it’s also our quality,” she says, adding Amsterdam Greenhouses has the capacity and expertise to ensure better quality control than larger facilities. “We don’t do a lot of mass production, so we have a lot of selection in our greenhouses and we grow specifically for our customers.” Amsterdam also offers the service of custom-growing hanging baskets and planters. The centre not only custom-grows for retail customers, but also custom-grows the beautiful baskets for the municipality. When it comes to growing at home, Amsterdam has everything you need to get started, from seeds and trays to fertilizers and lights. Amongst the thousands of seeds that Amsterdam Greenhouses have available, the centre also has a great selection of organic, as well as non-GMO seeds. Each spring, Amsterdam Greenhouses offers seminars on seed starting and vegetable gardening. If growing from seed isn’t your thing, then Amsterdam has you covered, as well. “It is very popular to grow your own food. That’s one of the edges we have. We grow our own vegetable plants here,” Jennifer explains. “We can produce the selection that our customers are asking for. So if we have a lot of people in the community

wanting something specific, we can definitely cater to that.” The Koks willingness to cater to the community has earned them accolades. Last year, the City of Pitt Meadows honoured Amsterdam Green-

houses with a Green Star business award for advocacy and awareness in recognition of the many gardening seminars the company hosts. “We try to nurture understanding and appreciation for plants and the environment to promote a healthy lifestyle,” says Lidy. One of Amsterdam’s popular seminar speakers is their nursery department manager, Mike Lascelle, who has been with the company for 16 years. He is a certified arborist, author, and well-known garden personality in the community. He offers free garden design advice in-store and will also travel on-site for full service garden design consultations. Novices, as well as green thumbs can check out amsterdamgreenhouses. com to find a calendar of upcoming seminars and workshops, delving into everything from maintaining dwarf maples in containers to creating a “Hellebore Heaven” in one’s backyard, as well as various classes for kids and their Annual Nature Day Event.

Five Consumer Tips

1

by Patti Wilson

Planning is everything; meet with your lighting consultant before wiring if possible. This will allow time to make important decisions regarding lighting layout ideas for every room. Keep in mind there is no single light fixture that can perform all lighting needs.

2

Get all the players involved (interior designers, lighting designer, contractor, and the electrician) working together as soon as possible. The team approach produces a cohesive result.

3

If possible do your furniture layout before attempting to create a lighting system. The lighting should relate to the way each room is going to be used. Light layering is our special design methodology in which a number of light sources are blended together to create a successful design.

4

Use dimmers whenever possible for optimum results whether you need full light for tasking or less light for a more ambient feel.

5

Understand the benefits, limitations and function of recessed lighting. There are multiple sizes and styles to choose from which should be clearly understood and shown to you by your lighting professional.

From left to right Gosha Gidlewicz, Patti Wilson, Hilda and Peter Hill from Maple Ridge Lighting.

Maple Ridge Lighting makes lives brighter!

From ceiling to floor: chandeliers, lamps, mirrors, art and endless home décor items fill the popular showroom on 227th Street. There is everything from the most contemporary to the classically inspired. Truly something for everyone. In the past 28 years we have seen many changes in lighting fixtures and products. We have gone from polished brass and acrylic fixtures to more organic looking metals

“Today’s fixtures are begging to be released from their traditional shapes and materials. Innovation and technology will lead revolution.” and fabrics in a variety of colours with a large selection of decorative glass or crystal accents. Wood is also making a comeback in fixtures for the restorative look. Quality and design in lighting products has evolved over the years to complement other design aspects in the home. Lighting is a very specialized field, it is not only decorative but also very technical, probably the most important

element in any home. It helps showcase everything in your home, whether it is your beautiful wood floors, tiles, wall décor, accessories, colours of your walls, furniture etc. The trick is using a variety of light sources to create a flexible, inviting space. We call this layering. Light performs four basic functions: · Task lighting is lighting by which you do work. Such lighting may be under cabinet in kitchens, or reading lamps. · Accent lighting is used to highlight objects and add depth and dimension. Recessed, track lights, etc would be used. · Decorative lighting adds sparkle and beauty to a room. Fixtures such as chandeliers and wall sconces fall into this category. · Ambient lighting is gentle fill light. It softens shadows on people’s faces and fills the volume of a space like a warm glow from a roaring fire. Often this light is bounced off the ceiling, which may come from torchieres, wall sconces, pendants and cove lighting. By layering these four functions together you create an environment that welcomes visitors while providing usable light for day-to-day activities.

Maple Ridge Lighting’s showroom has a plethora of ideas for your home décor.

Getting a feel for these functions will get you on the right path to understanding how light can work for you. The homeowners of today have become far more astute and involved in interior design for their home. They often seek assistance in these areas from trusted, trained professionals in each category to give them the desired look for their home. After all, you would not go to a painter for your plumbing, would you?

Maple Ridge Lighting Shines A Light On Energy Eficiency Bridging Science With The Architecture Of Light! In the past 3 years nothing has gained the momentum and interest as LED Bulbs; definitely the bulb and fixtures of the future. You may have heard the gloom-and-doom about incandescent light bulbs being phased out. But when it comes to dollars and sense, the gradual removal of them from the marketplace is a good thing. Traditional incandescents are a drain on a home’s utility bills and are highly inefficient. Fortunately, the lighting industry has been developing, testing, and preparing bulbs that offer a greater range of light color and flexibility, with a longer lifespan and greater efficiency.

far greater efficiency and energy savings. Regular incandescent bulbs, including reflector bulbs for recessed lights, track and general lighting use 40 to 75watts in each socket. LED bulbs use 5 to18 watts per socket which produces equal to, or more light output than the higher wattage regular bulbs. LED has extremely long life with ratings of 25,000 to 50,000 hours, so based on three hours per day operation would provide up to 45 years life and are easily recycled.

While people were concerned initially about the blue tone of the LED light, for example, the bulbs now offer the same warm tone as a traditional light bulb, however where 80 percent of the energy is wasted in heat versus the production of light. FAST FACTS WHAT ARE LEDS?

“EnergyStar-qualiied LED bulbs use 75 per cent less energy than regular incandescents.” - Hilda Hill

Choosing The Right Light Color Light appearance or color is measured in Kelvins (K). A low K value indicates warmer light or light with red tones. A high K number equals cooler or blue toned light. Here are a few floor rules to follow: • To replace traditional incandescents, choose a bulb with a K value of 2400 K to 2900 K • In kitchens, a value of about 3500 K will enhance the look of faces and food. • Active rooms – such as workout spaces benefit from light that is about 4100 K • For reading areas some may want a 5000 K • Ambient areas may not benefit with LEDS.

So Much More Than A Lighting Store

LEDs, or light–emitting diodes, are semiconductor devices that produce visible light when an electrical current is passed through them. LEDs are a type of Solid State Lighting (SSL), as are organic light–emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light–emitting polymers (LEPs). How is LED lighting different than other light sources, such as incandescent and CFL? LED lighting differs from incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting in several ways. When designed well, LED lighting can be more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting. LED lighting products use light emitting diodes to produce light very efficiently. An electrical current passed through semiconductor material illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs. The heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink. Common LED colors include amber, red, green, and blue. There is actually no such thing as a “white” LED. To get white light the kind we use for lighting our homes and offices, different color LEDs are mixed or covered with a phosphor material that converts the color of the light. The phosphor is the yellow material you can see on some LED products. Colored LEDs are widely used as signal lights and indicator lights, like the power button on a computer. LEDs are now being incorporated into bulbs and fixtures for general lighting applications. LEDs are small and provide unique design opportunities. Some LED bulb solutions may look like familiar light bulbs and some may not but can better match the performance of traditional light bulbs. Some LED light fixtures may have LEDs built–in as a permanent light source.

Five Consumer Tips by Renee Taylor

1

Pre-planning your funeral wishes in advance alleviates the stress on members of your family, as they are overcome with grief. Pre-planning is free of charge. Funerals do not need to be expensive to be meaningful.

2

When making your plans for funeral arrangements, consider the feelings and needs of your family members and those who love you. Leave your requests flexible to allow survivors to fulfill their own emotional needs.

3

If the estate or surviving family of the deceased person has no immediate resources to meet the funeral costs, there are supplements that may be provided to pay for necessary funeral costs of any person who dies in British Columbia.

4

A will is a written document that becomes effective upon your death. It gives the person named as your executor the legal authority to make decisions according to your directions stated in the will.

5

Keep in mind that your will is usually not read or even obtainable until after the funeral has taken place. It is therefore important that your executor has copies of the will.

Funeral chapel all about family For Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel and Crematorium, the goal is taking care of your family. In operation since 1964, it is one of the six traditional family-owned and operated funeral homes still serving the Lower Mainland. The journey to that point, however, requires looking back to where the business originated. Thomas Osborn moved from England to Maple Ridge in 1932, when he purchased property and opened “Osborn’s Shoe Store.” The family business was passed down to his children, Leslie and Irene, in

“We want you to be assured that we will do all we can to assist you in the days to come.” Renee Taylor - Maple Ridge Funeral Chapal 1952. Leslie continued the family business until 1964, when he and his wife sold the property, including “Osborn’s Shoe Store,” in order to build Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel. Leslie and his wife Eileen passed the business on to two of their daughters, Diane MacKenzie and Joan Gibson,

Diane MacKenzie (Osborn)

who continued the tradition of dedicated service. In 1991, an onsite crematorium was added, followed by a patio room for receptions. But one thing that has never changed is keeping the business in the family. General manager and funeral director Renee Taylor says that throughout the years it has been a “privilege” serving families in their time of need. “We are a family-owned, private, full-service, in-house facility which enables us to assist families in our community. Funerals do not need to be expensive to be meaningful. When someone dies, it is overwhelming, with all the emotions, fear and financial issues that arise. So being able to come to one place is convenient for families,” says Taylor. “We look after all arrangements, from a simple cremation to a full traditional service in our chapel or church, followed by cremation or burial.” When it comes to handling a sensitive situation like the passing of a loved one, it is imperative that the funeral home is run by people who truly care. Taylor mentions that the team members at Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel and Crematorium are “proud” to be licensed professionals and have dedicated their lives to helping families. “Here in our funeral home, a family’s feelings are safe and respected,” says Taylor. “We help families through each step, and once a loved one comes into our care, we are able to care for them until all arrangements are completed.” Maple Ridge Funeral Chapel also offers a complimentary and extensive AfterCare Program to help families through the paperwork required fol-

lowing a death, including completing applications for Canada Pension Benefits, the cancellation of health cards, driver’s licenses, passports and social insurance numbers, as well as providing information regarding pensions, insurance claims, settling estates and other issues. “We know you will find so many mat-

Don Schuiling Samantha Mobert After Care Specialists ters to take care of during this difficult time,” says Taylor, “and we want you to be assured that we will do all we can to assist you in the days to come.” The care and compassion of the funeral home’s team doesn’t just extend following a death, but also ensures assistance beforehand, too. The “Being Prepared Made Simple” seminar runs every year in September, and includes a complimentary educational seminar and dinner. The night also features key speakers who address important issues such as protecting an estate, establishing a will, Canada Pension benefits, preparing both emotionally and financially, as well as making sure arrangements are communicated and understood by everyone. “It is our role and responsibility to the community to educate on end-of-life issues,” says Taylor. “For us, being able to put people at ease is truly a privilege.”

Five Consumer Tips by Steve D’Souza

1

Using a mortgage broker provides homebuyers with a free service and expertise that results in getting them the best mortgage option geared to their individual needs and wants.

2

Get your mortgage broker to help you obtain a pre-approval letter. It speeds the home-buying process and shows sellers and realtors a lender has reviewed your income, credit history and reserved an interest rate for you.

3

Budget for the extra costs. Mortgage fees such as default insurance premiums and property appraisal fees vary depending on what percentage of the home’s value you are financing. Closing costs also vary province to province. Talk with your mortgage broker to avoid unexpected costs on closing.

4

Try to maximize your credit score when home buying. For example try to stay within 50 to 60 of your credit limit. Otherwise you have no breathing space if a problem surfaces.

5

Regularly review your payment plan. Evaluate your financing options to make sure they still benefit you. See if a shorter amortization period or shifting from monthly to bi-weekly or weekly payments can save you money in the long-run.

Nathan Isherwood, left, and Steve D’Souza, of Client First Mortgage Solutions.

Client First connects people with their dream home The name says it all at Client First Mortgage Solutions, says co-owner Steve D’Souza. The foremost aim of the Maple Ridge firm is to make customers a priority. “Each client’s needs and wants are different, and we match them with the product ideally suited for them,” says D’Souza. Buying a home is most often the largest purchase a person will make in their lifetime and can seem overwhelming, he notes. But D’Souza and business partner Nathan Isherwood try to make the process simple, fast and stress-free. And, they empower clients, whether first-time buyers, newcomers to Canada or long-time homeowners, by getting them access to the best products and rates available to them. Banks can only offer their customers the products available at their financial institution, D’Souza says. However, Client First has strong relationships with a diverse group of

““There’s no better feeling than helping someone into their dream home.” Steve D’Souza, co-owner lenders within the Canadian mortgage industry. This ensures that lenders compete for homebuyers’ mortgages, resulting in more choices, as well as better rates and terms for clients, says D’Souza.

He and Isherwood look to make the whole process convenient, tailoring services to a client’s preferences and schedules. “We can operate outside of bank hours and we’ll meet people face-toface at their homes,” he says. “Or if people are too busy, we can do applications or answer questions online and over the phone.” “Our client is anyone who really needs a mortgage,” says D’Souza. “We generally have an option for everyone. And if the challenges can’t be resolved immediately, we help set up an action plan to get them where they want to be.” Client First builds long-term relationships with people beyond that first mortgage, he adds. There are yearly check-ups on client financing to ensure they constantly get the rates and conditions to save money and pay off mortgages faster. “We also help people get started with investment properties and make rental properties as effective as possible,” says D’Souza. It’s important that home buyers select a mortgage broker with the appropriate expertise and experience, he says. A provincially licensed mortgage advisor who has worked in the financial industry for a decade and completed Canadian securities and ethics courses, D’Souza was a broker with Origin Mortgages for five years prior to opening his own firm in 2011. Isherwood, also a licensed mortgage advisor in B.C., worked at TD Bank as a mortgage specialist for five years.

However, he wanted to offer his clients more options and competitive rates, so he partnered with D’Souza to open Client First in Maple Ridge. Both men wanted to base their firm in their hometown, where they’ve spent their lives and where both their fathers have operated long-time businesses. “I think it’s important to be part of a community for a long time,” says D’Souza. “Yes, success comes down to providing good rates, services and products. But it’s also about establishing roots and giving back to the community you live in.” Both donate time and resources to organizations that serve local causes. Client First donates a small percentage of each deal completed to the Friends in Need Food Bank, which serves Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The firm also supports Habitat for Humanity, Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. D’Souza and Isherwood are also planning free public seminars twice a year about the home-buying process and credit ratings. The talks will walk participants through the complete home-buying process and talk about how to look at credit and how to maximize such scores. The seminars are just another aspect to Client First’s desire to help people reach their mortgage goals, says D’Souza. “There’s no better feeling than helping someone into their dream home.” • Client First Mortgage Solutions free seminars take place this spring at the ACT in Maple Ridge – 11944 Haney Place. The homebuyer seminar is April 3 from 7-9 p.m. The credit seminar is April 17 from 7 - 9 p.m. Visit clientfirstmortgages.com.

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Hassan

1 Take it one day at time. Set achievable daily goals and get rewards right away.

2 Work within your fitness range. If you do it and enjoy it, you’ll naturally be motivated, push forward and get results.

3 Find a fitness partner. Working out or exercising with someone else provides instant motivation and makes it more enjoyable.

4 Get advice from an expert. A professional trainer can get you started on a plan that works.

5 Stay consistent. Finding a balanced approach to fitness and health is key.

Jane Dela Cruz works out in the women only section of In The Zone Fitness.

In The Zone Fitness helps clients find their stride The owners of In The Zone Fitness know the secret to success is to keep people moving forward in a way that matches their unique needs and goals. Professional trainer Hassan Ngobi, co-owner of Pitt Meadows’ largest full-service fitness facility, believes there is no one-size-fits-all approach to getting in shape. “If there was only one way to achieve fitness, everybody would do it,” says Hassan, who’s been involved in the fitness and sports industry as a personal trainer and coach for 15-plus years. Each client has individual needs, fitness levels and objectives, and therefore requires a game plan or services that are right for them. Some In The Zone clients might be looking at getting started with a fitness plan. Other, more experienced athletes might be looking to overcome performance plateaus or get more out of their weightlifting regime, while more might just want to work towards better health, says Hassan. “I like to talk with people and develop a strategy that works for them and can help them succeed. Every person is special in their own way.” In The Zone’s facility and services also reflect Hassan’s fitness philosophy, says his wife and the centre’s co-owner Tina Ngobi.

“I like to talk with people and develop a strategy that works for them and can help them succeed.” Hassan Ngobi, Owner “We offer a variety of membership options to suit any fitness needs,” says Tina. The 8,000-square-foot gym also has a huge selection of strength training and cardio equipment, as well as a large circuit training zone. It also features a separate women’s

only area, a large group training studio and tanning services. “There are some people who don’t want to go to a gym and exercise alone who can opt for our bootcamp package,” says Tina. “Or if they simply want to use equipment or use the women’s only zone, they can use a gym membership.” “They can also use us as a personal fitness studio and simply get one-onone personal training with Hassan.” The husband and wife team took over the fitness facility just over a year ago. They made a lot of changes, renovations and equipment purchases to create a modern, clean, professional and friendly workout space, says Tina. In the Zone Fitness, which is located within walking distance of everything in downtown Pitt Meadows, caters to every kind of client, she adds. “We have students, seniors, even couples and entire families that workout together,” says Tina. “It’s social and friendly, and the regulars keep each other motivated. It’s a real community feeling.” The other benefit is Hassan, who is on location most of the time. He is not just the fitness professional, but also the business owner, says Tina. “If I were attending a gym, I’d rather know the owner was on site to solve any problems.” Hassan agrees, noting it’s just not business issues he attends to. Many gyms don’t have staff dedicated to ensuring people are working out correctly to get good results or prevent injuries, he says. “It’s almost like our clients get some of the benefits of having a personal trainer without the cost.” Originally from Uganda, Africa, Hassan competed nationally and internationally in track and field in his country of origin. Since then, Hassan has accumulated a score of Canadian and international fitness certifications, as well as CPR

and first-aid training. And he is constantly re-educating himself. It provides a personal challenge and means he can offer clients the most advanced training, while keeping it fresh and mixing things up. In addition to offering one-on-one personal training, Hassan also teaches his popular Urban Bootcamp. Hassan stresses that people shouldn’t be intimidated by the term “bootcamp.” He motivates, trains and pushes clients to reach their maximum potential, but never uses a drill sergeant technique. He takes a “joyful approach,” he says. Fitness has to be fun for people to stay on track. “I don’t think yelling and screaming at someone is the way to get them to do something. I find other ways to motivate people. And you won’t be able to use one way to help every individual.” No one is left behind at his bootcamp, which operates both indoors and outdoors. Hassan offers adaptions to all the exercises, so clients from every fitness level can participate and progress. Clients like the bootcamp because it offers aspects of personal training, as well as group support. “People lose weight, gain muscle speed and endurance – and often even friends – while having a good time,” says Hassan. “And I provide lots of variety, so it’s never boring.”

FIVE BUSINESS TIPS by Platinum Glow Tanning Salon

1 Always put your clients first. 2 Do what you love. 3 Be professional. 4 Take pride in your work. 5 Have fun and success will follow. From left, Stephanie Browne, Tanya Haddad and Brittney Wright of Platinum Glow Tanning Salon.

Platinum Glow is in the know After years in the tanning industry, Brittney Wright and Tanya Haddad decided to create their own salon, opening Platinum Glow Tanning Salon with the goal of creating the ultimate tanning experience. In terms of service, equipment, atmosphere and facility, the girls agree that they measure success by how satisfied their customers are. “This means not only providing the best equipment and service, but taking the time to really understand the needs of every one of our clients, getting to know them personally, and helping them to reach their tanning goals,” say Wright and Haddad.

“It can be hard to cut through the negative stigmas of tanning out there, but it comes with the territory and we’re just happy to be able to provide a great experience to these people.” Brittney and Tanya, Owners “We’ve been fortunate that this has translated into business success for us. Ultimately, though, we really try to stay focused every day on client experience

as our primary measure of success for our salon.” With a combined decade of experience in the industry, the salon is the culmination of their years of hard work and expertise in tanning. As a team with a shared vision for their business, they also have similar reasons for pursuing this career. “I love the industry and I love helping clients achieve their tanning goals,” says Haddad. Wright echoes the same sentiments: “I love working with people and using my years of experience to help them accomplish my dream of providing the very best tanning experience.” However, the girls recognized early on that in order to accomplish their dreams, they had to overcome aspects of the industry that had a negative reputation. “There is a lot misinformation out there about tanning, and we do have clients that have had negative experiences elsewhere, where there hasn’t been enough care and attention paid,” say Wright and Haddad. “It can be hard to cut through the negative stigmas of tanning out there, but it comes with the territory and we’re just happy to be able to provide a great experience to these people.” Often these misconceptions come from a poor tanning experience, such as through a gym, where tanning times aren’t properly monitored or evaluated by professionals. “At our salon, all of our client’s exposure times are recorded and carefully evaluated before each visit,” assure Wright and

Brittney Wright of Platinum Glow Tanning Salon, wipes down a tanning bed.

Haddad. “A pre-screen process is also done before any client tans with us, and this allows our clients to minimize any risks of over-exposure and maximize the health and cosmetic benefits of tanning.” Platinum Glow also offers a sunless spray tanning option, to which none of the concerns surrounding traditional indoor tanning apply. It is with options and expertise that allow Wright and Haddad to instill confidence in their clients and establish a positive rapport. “We always measure our success by how satisfied our clients are, and this really helps us stay focused on their experience,” says Haddad. “Like any business, we’re here because of our clients, and we always try to stay appreciative and continue to provide them that experience that brought them here in the first place.” And Wright agrees that when they set out on their journey, it was about going above and beyond, which hasn’t changed. “We wanted to provide world-class equipment paired with the very best customer-oriented service,” she says. “We like to think that’s what we’ve accomplished, but of course we hope people come in and judge for themselves.”

FIVE REASONS TO VISIT

1 While only eight full-time employees manage the airport,

about 1,400 people have access to the property for business and recreation.

2 Our grounds are often used for film, advertising and television production – a huge contributor last year was the hit TV show “Arctic Air.”

3 There are eight full-time air traffic controllers who navigate all of our air traffic from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. for three nautical miles.

4 The Runway Café is a licensed restaurant on site with a patio for you to enjoy the planes taking off and landing.

5 Out of 646 acres, 349 are used for agriculture.

The airport is capable of handling a wide variety of air traffic.

Aviation a great industry for young people to get involved in It’s said that an organization is only as good as its people, and the team at Pitt Meadows Airport considers itself very lucky to have James Neale as its operations and maintenance manager. James has been in the position since 2006, and his boss, Airport Manager Glenn Ralph, considers him an invaluable asset to the people who work and play at the third largest airport in the Lower Mainland (by number of plane movements in 2011) and the 20th busiest in Canada in 2012. In a way, James is excellent proof that hard work and determination can lead to great things. An automotive mechanic by trade, he started at the Pitt Meadows Airport as a groundskeeper 10 years ago. He was hired to cut the grass and help out with landscaping, but it didn’t take long before he was able to showcase his talents as a mechanic by fixing equipment and vehicles used in the day-to-day operations of the airport. “I started as a landscaper, showed my skills, and got promoted,” says James. Eventually the position of operations and maintenance manager became

“There are so many opportunities in aviation these days. And there is so much potential for Pitt Meadows airport.” Glenn Ralph, airport manager vacant and he decided a future in airport management was a great career move. Today, the young man is responsible for a crew of five – a mechanic and three ancillary staff – who are charged with ensuring the airport is fully functional and in good shape at all times.

“We’re responsible for maintaining the service vehicles, groundskeeping, runway and building maintenance, the fuel trucks, lighting on the runways, and a whole lot more,” says James. “The airport simply wouldn’t function if we didn’t’ keep things in peak condition.” It’s an incredibly challenging position, says the operations manager, because it provides different challenges every day. Yes, there are routines, but there is also something new to work on pretty much every day of the year… and that very much appeals to James. “It’s the kind of job you can really throw yourself into, and never grow tired of.” With so much happening at the airport, and so much growth, there’s definitely long-term potential there in James’ opinion. His boss, Glenn, shares that vision of a bright future for both his operations and maintenance manager, and for the airport. “There are so many opportunities in aviation these days,” says Glenn. “And there is so much potential for Pitt Meadows Airport.” As noted already, the airport’s three runways plus its float dock on the Fraser River combine to make the airport the third busiest in the Greater Vancouver area. Only Vancouver International and Boundary Bay can boast more plane movements each year. The airport is capable of handling a wide variety of air traffic, and its 700 acres are home to more than 50 businesses employing between 300 and 400 people. Flight schools, skydiving, tourism, aircraft maintenance and repair, aviation insurance and air taxi/charter services are just some of the uses people have for YPK. The Justice Institute of BC has a training campus on location, and there is even motorcycle

James Neale

training happening at the airport. With about 350 of its 650 acres still to be developed, Glenn says Pitt Meadows Airport (also known by its call letters YPK) is perfectly poised for big expansion in the years to come. “We are currently working with several companies and training institutes who are interested in setting up shop at Pitt Meadows Airport, and as time goes on we expect to see a lot more of that.” “This airport is ideally located to serve Maple Ridge, Mission, Langley, Surrey and the Tri-Cities, as well as Pitt Meadows. The new Golden Ears and Pitt River bridges have made it much more accessible, and therefore more attractive to both the business and flying communities. It’s a regional asset, says Glenn, and also a local attraction for area residents, particularly when events such as Airport Day are held each summer. “We love Airport Day because it gives us a great opportunity to showcase the future of the aviation industry in our community,” says the YPK manager. “Pitt Meadows Airport is going to continue to be a major source of jobs in years to come for people in the area, and we like to encourage young people in particular to think of aviation for their futures. Glenn points out that people like James are, not to put too fine a point on the matter, perfect examples of what the future of aviation can hold for someone with talent and drive. “It’s still some months off, but we hope to see many young people at our next airport day.”

FIVE TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR RETURN TO SCHOOL A SUCCESS

1 Book an appointment with an academic advisor to register for

your class. a. Bring your latest transcript. b. Bring photo ID with current address. Bring proof of residency if ID does not include your current address. c. If born outside of Canada, bring status documents (passport, PR card, citizenship card or visa).

2 Plan to regularly attend classes. 3 Have open communication with your teachers. 4 Contact your advisor when life events interfere with your school career – we want to work with our students to help them achieve their goals.

5 Come prepared for class and practice good time management.

Darren Rowell, Vice Principal, left, and District Principal Bruce Grady, outside the School District 42’s Riverside Centre.

‘Never too late’ for adults to hit the books at Riverside Centre “So often people who are going back (to school) later in life feel that they will be at a disadvantage compared to the younger students,” says Bruce Grady. But when it comes to lifelong learning the District Principal of Maple Ridge’s Riverside Centre wants adults to know one simple thing if they’re undecided about returning to class. “It’s never too late.” The centre, located at 20575 Thorne Ave., offers continuing education for adults, international education for those new to Canada, online learning courses and also houses Ridge Meadow College.

“Through continuing education, through online learning, and through our Ridge Meadows College, you can do a combination of things through us without having to travel to three different sites” Grady acknowledges returning to school can be quite intimidating for some adults who have been absent from the classroom for years or newcomers to Canada that wish to improve their English, Math or Science skills.

Nerves afflict even those who come back determined to upgrade academic credits and move on to a post-secondary institution that will eventually lead them to a more fulfilling career. But Grady says Riverside does everything it can to ensure adult learning is made as accessible as possible. Vice Principal Darren Rowell explains the toughest part for some prospective students is simply walking through those front doors to learn more about what Riverside offers. Once they’re inside, staff immediately get to work putting students on the right path toward realizing their goals. “The academic advisors meet one-onone, learn what the student is trying to achieve whether it’s post-secondary or a trades program or graduation, and they set them up with the courses that are going to be the most beneficial for them,” Rowell says. Because Riverside is home to so many options under a single roof, students have the ability to simultaneously study a number of different courses geared to their goals. It just takes some strategic planning and some easy-to-access assistance from advisors. “We try to individualize (programs) for people’s needs as much as we can,” says Grady, adding online learning can be mixed with some faceto-face time with instructors. It really comes down to what’s best for the student, who also get to enjoy class sizes smaller than those typically found in the average high school. Because Riverside serves as home base for Ridge Meadows College, it’s

able to offer a broad range of specialized programs for adults considering a specialized career path. Students there can receive certification in early childhood education, special education assistance, administrative

Riverside Centre offers a wide variety of courses and programs for adults.

office work, forklift operation, custodial work, dental reception and bookkeeping, among others. “People really enjoy the fact they don’t have to leave the community to pursue some of these post-secondary opportunities,” Grady says. “Coming here provides an option (to) do all the things they need to do within a couple of semesters.” Often, the highlight for both the principal and the vice-principal centres on the feedback students get back from their teachers. “When we see some of these people who have been out and lived life and realized that they can apply everything they learned in life to the coursework that they do here...that really makes you feel good,” Grady says. Enrolment at Riverside Centre is currently in progress. The next semester of classes start February 3rd.

Five Tips To heaTing wiTh wood by Lisa Blaine

1

Season your wood. If you pick up your wood here and there, try to keep a season ahead. And if you buy your wood, buy it first thing in the spring so that you can allow it to dry in time for the fall season.

2

Stack your firewood loose when seasoning it. Ideally you should build a firewood shed with a roof and slatted sides that will keep the rain off, but allow the air to flow through the stacks to dry them.

3

Have an airtight unit installed. Trying to heat with an open fireplace is almost impossible.

4

Check the seal on your airtight heater – you should be able to put a piece of paper in the door of your airtight stove or insert and not be able to pull it out. If it slips out, you probably need a new door gasket.

5

Make sure your chimney is cleaned by a professional, WETTcertified chimney sweep every year. A clogged chimney doesn’t burn as well, and will start to spill smoke when the door is open.

Nothing beats the warm glow of a fireplace for adding ambience.

Warm Hearth turns a house into a home with gas and wood-burning heating units When Rick Springer and his wife bought their first woodburning stove decades ago, the owner of Maple Ridge’s Warm Hearth Heating Centre found out something quite interesting about his new bride. “My wife discovered she was a closet pyromaniac,” he says with a chuckle. “Pretty well every night, we will burn a fire. She just loves to have the fire going.” But Warm Hearth, located at 11834 – 226 Street, isn’t only in the business of selling wood-burning stoves designed to warm living spaces. It also carries gas and pellet-burning units for those looking to warm their rooms with energy-efficient and stylish heaters. Springer says the benefits of such heaters go beyond just keeping warm.

“Once you turn a fireplace on, especially a nice one, and you’re in a living room, it just adds so much to the comfort.” Rick Springer, Warm Hearth Heating Centre “Because we live in a very humid, moist climate, having the dryness of that wood really goes a long ways towards keeping your house kind of dry and mold-free. Doors that tend to jam in the winter are now swinging free,” he says. “It’s just an ideal kind of heat

for down in this area.” But Springer acknowledges it takes a real commitment from those who are serious about enjoying cheap, energy-efficient heating. “Wood is my personal preference, but it is a lifestyle. So a person has to be aware of that,” he says. “You have to get the wood and split the wood, stack the wood and clean up after the wood.” But he insists that no matter how much time and money a person invests in it, it will pay for itself “because there’s no cheaper way to heat than wood.” Still, Springer says the wood-burning units are not for everybody. “If you’re a person who has a busy life and you just don’t think this is something for you, then probably gas is the better way to go,” he says. “As my wife calls it, ‘clap-on, clap-off convenience.’” Furthermore, the polar vortex that left much of the continent paralyzed by freezing weather is also drawing a lot of new customers to Warm Hearth. “They’ve already been thinking about buying them for appearances and for decor of the house, but they’re also looking at what’s been happening on the East Coast,” Springer says. “They’re starting to look at these things as being part of an emergency plan ... asking, ‘How are you going to survive eight days without power?’” And if there’s one tip he has for customers on the fence about buying a unit, Springer advises to go with quality. It’s an easy task to fulfill at Warm

Hearth since many of its products are made in B.C., which is considered the base for manufacturing high-quality units. Whenever Springer travels to the United States, he notices local brands like Regency and Pacific Energy are put on full display just as they are up north. “It’s not just ‘rah-rah, B.C.,’” he says, adding those companies’ proven track records speak for themselves.

Air-tight fireplaces provide efficient heat.

“It’s also the fact that when we do have any issues, most of these companies we can phone and we can talk to the actual designers directly.” But one of the most important beliefs Springer holds is the ability for these heating units to transform a family’s lifestyle. “A burning fireplace – gas or wood and to a lesser extent, pellet-burning – they are kind of like pictures or plants, in that they can really turn a house into a home.”

FIVE CONSUMER TIPS by Richard Lock

1 Talk to family and friends and see who they recommend – and

just as importantly, who they don’t recommend.

2 Ask for referrals from the plumbing company. 3 They should be licenced, and insured for property and personal liability.

4 Go with someone you’re comfortable with – if you don’t

feel their attitude is right, you’re under no obligation.

5 Get a minimum of three quotes for the work, and ask

probing questions if any of them seem out of line.

MeadowRidge Plumbing features an extensive portfolio of new home plumbing, services and repairs and more.

Superior customer service, that’s the MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas way What does it take to build a solid reputation in the plumbing industry? For Richard Lock of MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas, it’s all about honesty, integrity and superior workmanship. “MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas has only been going for the past six years, and we have developed an excellent reputation in the community for our service work and for our new home installations,” says Richard, who has been in the plumbing business for the past 14 years and worked in the construction industry since he was 15. “Our guys go to work every day knowing that the success of the company rests squarely on their shoulders through the work they do.” It can be a lot of pressure, but Richard is confident in his team because he chose each of them for the fact that they personify his own insistence on excellence. MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas built its core reputation working on high-end renovations and new home construction. The same attention to

“Everything is a priority for us because it’s a priority for you” Richard Lock, Owner/Operator detail demanded in that kind of work is carried over into the service side of the business. “People pay us hard-earned money to make sure the plumbing in their home is working properly, so whether it’s a dripping faucet or a broken down boiler, we respect that it’s important, and we do our best to fix it as soon as possible.” “Everything is a priority for us because it’s a priority for you,” Richard adds. Small jobs, large jobs, it doesn’t matter to the guys at MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas. They work six

days a week to ensure homeowners in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and surrounding areas have peace of mind when it comes to their plumbing systems. So when should you call MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas? If you’re having problems with your plumbing or radiant heating system, need sewer or drain tile cleaning, or have an issue with your hot water tank or boiler, then you should be calling Richard and company for professional, clean, friendly service. They also do a lot of annual maintenance work for those customers who believe prevention is the best cure not only for the common cold, but also common plumbing problems. “There is no call-out fee in the Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows area and we will provide a free estimate,” says Richard. “Most of the time I can tell you what the problem will cost over the phone, but even if we have to come for a visit to check out the problem firsthand, there’s still no estimate cost.” It’s important to the owner of MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas that customers and potential customers feel confident when they call his number, and that starts with getting a real person on the phone instead of an answering machine. Richard strives to ensure every call is responded to within the hour, so that people don’t get frustrated waiting for the plumber to call. “I don’t want people complaining about my company because they couldn’t even get a callback. That’s just not good business, and I’m building a company for the future of not only myself, but more importantly my family and my employees.” “My customers will always be treated fairly because that’s how I want to be treated. We give them an honest estimate of the work that needs to be

done, we don’t pad that estimate by suggesting things which don’t need to be done, and we keep the price reasonable.

“You combine that with friendly service from either Ted – one of the friendliest, hardest-working guys I know – myself, or any of our service team and it equals the professionalism and integrity that I want my company to be known for.” And even if the guys at MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas can’t help you with your particular problem, Richard says he’ll always point you in the right direction towards someone who can. “We’ve built solid relationships with some of the best companies in the plumbing and heating industry, so if your job is something we can’t tackle, then we’ll refer you on to someone we trust to treat you the same way we would take care of you.” It’s all part of ensuring MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas becomes the first name in plumbing and heating for homeowners in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. “Helping people is the No. 1 priority at MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas,” Richard notes. “I want the people who call us to be customers for life, so we will do everything we can to ensure their experience with us is professional and friendly.” “We do what we say we’re going to do, we respect our customers’ time and wallet, and we make sure that everything we do is first rate. That’s our promise to our customers, and that’s what MeadowRidge Plumbing and Gas is known for locally.”

Family friendly improv. Improv at TIC ensures a night of laughs for the whole family, where the only ear covering you will have to do is because the laughter is too loud.

Reg Parks, artistic director of Theatre in the Country, watches as the actors rehearse for their upcoming production of Noises Off.

Truly classic British farce now playing in Whonnock at Theatre In The Country Do you love to laugh? Does farce leave you doubled over and gasping for air? If so, you won’t want to miss the local production of Noises Off – a play some critics have dubbed the “ultimate” British farce because it’s actually a farce within a farce. Noises Off is the latest offering from Maple Ridge’s own Theatre In The Country troupe, and is currently being presented at their Whonnock venue until February 15. Full of rollicking good fun, Noises Off follows the behind the scenes antics of a theatre company attempting to bring to the stage a farce called Nothing On. If it sounds confusing, theatre director Reg Parks promises all will become clear when you visit Theatre In The Country to catch one of its “dinner and a show” performances. If you’ve never heard of Theatre In The Country it’s probably because the newly-formed theatre group is just a year old. Already, however, they’ve earned a dedicated and growing following amongst local and regional theatre goers for their superb stage productions of such shows as Charley’s Aunt, My Fair Lady and Sleuth. Parks says the coming year is going to build on the successes of year one, with four productions in 2014, including Noises Off in January/February, The Lower Room for Easter, the Sound of Music in June, a full production of Les Miserable (Junior) in July, and The Mousetrap in November. In between, he notes, there will also be single-night improv events to keep everyone’s creative juices flowing. A drama instructor at Maple Ridge Christian School for the past 15 years, and a thespian for many more than that, Parks says his idea for Theatre In The Country was to begin developing what he hopes will someday become a professional, or at least semi-pro-

fessional theatre company. That’s a ways off yet, he acknowledges, but in the meantime he’s providing another opportunity for those who love theatre to develop their craft locally. “One day I hope we can create our own space, and incorporate such things as multi-media into most productions to take people beyond the simple stage. As an example, he says the Sound of Music coming up this spring will project the Austrian Alps, the convent, the cathedral and other visually stunning effects on the walls of the North Fraser Event Centre’s theatre space, thereby putting guests in the middle of the action, so to speak. Bringing patrons into the heart of each production is important to Parks and his team, and nothing brings people together like a good meal. The dinner theatre concept seems to appeal to people, Parks says. The meals are provided by Over The Top Catering out of Mission, and so far the food reviews are just as good as the performance reviews, he adds. That said, all shows can be enjoyed without coming to dinner, and some performances don’t include dinner at all. “I’m hoping to see Theatre In The Country become a ‘night out’ destination,” says Parks. We’re technically in the country, but we’re only about 15 minutes from downtown Maple Ridge, so we’re a lot closer than heading to Vancouver for a live show.” He says the cast and crew are primarily comprised of ex-students, parents of ex-students, and friends, but others are certainly welcome to join the fun.

So far it’s all amateur, in that nobody is being paid, but the quality of the shows has garnered positive reviews from patrons. “We take every production very seriously, and I think we’re providing top notch theatre. We want to be as top drawer as possible, and we want to give an experience that people feel is professional.” To that end, Parks’ vision is to do more shows that incorporate professional performers to keep increasing production values, and also to give local rising actors a chance to work with veterans of the industry. It worked very well when the troupe presented My Fair Lady. The coming year is going to offer bigger challenges for all involved, particularly the Summer Teen Intensive program being geared up for in July. Parks is planning to bring some talented instructors to town to give teens the opportunity to learn from the best while gearing up for a full-blown production of Les Miserables – all of which will happen in just one month. “It’s definitely going to be intense, hence the name,” says Parks. “However, it can be done and we’re going to do it. I think people are going to be amazed.” In the meantime, Parks is encouraging theatre lovers to purchase tickets for upcoming shows, including season’s passes. Everything you need to know about pricing is on the group’s website, www.theatreinthecountry.com. And finally, Parks hopes everyone will visit the North Fraser Event Centre on 272 Street in Whonnock to take in Noises Off. The farce has been performed all over the world, and will soon return to Broadway, but you can see it here in Maple Ridge with friends over a great dinner.

FIVE TIPS TO BUYING SHOES by John Laanstra

1 Get fitted by a qualified shoe salesperson. 2 Ignore your shoe size - go with what is comfortable to you. 3 Run your hand inside the shoe. 4 Take a walk on a hard surface. 5 Make sure you spray an allprotectant on all leather shoes so they last.

Owner of Payton & Buckle John Laanstra is your local shoe expert in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

No Stranger to the Shoe Industry Payton & Buckle may be new to Pitt Meadows, but the fine footwear store has more than 75 years of experience serving the people of the Fraser Valley. Payton & Buckle is a locally owned and operated shoe store that got its start in Chilliwack back in the 1940s. The shop has thrived in the downtown core and opened its second store in Abbotsford, and now opened a third store here in Pitt Meadows. ‘It’s really gone well so far and we’ve been really busy,” said owner John Laanstra. No stranger to the shoe industry, Laanstra started with the Chilliwack company 32 years ago as a salesman. Nine years later he purchased a portion of the business. After a great working relationship with his business partner, Erwin Huebert, Laanstra decided to buy the entire company in 2007. “That was always the plan, for me to eventually become the successor.”

“We carry all the different widths, from narrow to wide so you can find a shoe that’s comfortable.” John Laanstra, Owner “There was a niche there that needed to be filled.” “A lot of our customers were coming from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows

to buy shoes, but we knew we were losing alot of customers to the Langley and Vancouver area.”

Payton & Buckle opened their doors in Meadowtown Pitt Meadows in Fall 2013.

Now that his doors are open, that theory is being proved correct. “We are really happy with the amount of traffic we are getting in the new location.” This isn’t the first time the valley-based company has expanded. Back in the 1950s, Payton & Buckle opened a shop in Mission as well. While that shop is no longer there, serving the valley is still the shoe store’s prime concern. The new Pitt Meadows store is located in Meadowtown Centre on Lougheed Highway and is easily visible from the road. “We have a lot of people who come in and say they saw the sign,” adds Laanstra. At Payton & Buckle, they specialize in quality shoes and have a variety of widths to suit every foot. “We carry all the different widths, from narrow to wide so you can find a

do everything you can to help them. “If a customer asks a question, it’s OK to say ‘I don’t know,’ as long as you say ‘but I’ll find out for you’ after that.” Of course, his staff usually does know the answer because most of them have years of experience in the shoe industry. Payton & Buckle has one of the biggest selections of Clarks shoes in B.C. and we now have a selection of Clarks kids’ shoes. “Clarks is our key brand, we have a huge selection to choose from.” Other brands include Josef Seibel, Ecco, Pikolinos, Rieker, Taxi and Miz Mooz. If you are looking for quality shoes, purses and great service, then stop by the new Payton & Buckle in Pitt Meadows. John and his staff will be thrilled to help you find the right fit for any need.

Top Right: Peter Morcom, manager and pedorthist at Kintec Footwear and Orthotics, with Mikaela Patterson, left, and Conny McLean.

Kintec Maple Ridge leads the pack in custom footwear and orthotics

Kintec in Maple Ridge is taking strides to ensure it remains the frontrunner when it comes to helping people with footwear, orthotics and lifelong activity. Manager Peter Morcom says he and his expert staff are committed to making sure that everyone, regardless of age, activity or fitness level, gets the best possible fit. “There’s a huge variation in our clientele and their needs, whether that’s connected to work, sport or medical conditions,” says Morcom “We deal with everything from professional athletes to 85-year-old diabetics and young children just starting out in a sport. If you’re going to take a single step within a day, we are going to make you more comfortable.” Like a number of his trained staff, Morcom has a kinesiology degree and is a certified pedorthist – a foot orthotic and footwear expert. Whatever your footwear requirements, whether it’s a pair of athletic shoes, orthopaedic shoes, or just a comfortable pair of work shoes, Kintec will ensure it’s the right fit for you, he said. “We take a different approach to fitting footwear than any other shoe store.” Staff use a five-step system and take time to analyze clients’ needs, be it injury prevention or eliminating pain, to ensure they get the best possible care. All Kintec stores are equipped with the company’s exclusive biomechanical video analysis system. Using a treadmill and multi-camera video of customers running or walking, the Kintec crew examines individual gait patterns and identifies the shoes or accessories that work best for clients’ bodies. “We help you understand your mechanics,” says Morcom, “what might help or hinder an activity or

why a certain shoe, sock or insole would benefit you. We take the time to explain and show you exactly what’s happening with your own feet.” This free assessment is available to everyone who walks through the door, notes Morcom. Unlike other footwear stores, Kintec also specializes in custom foot orthotics or bracing for feet, ankles, knees, wrists, elbows and shoulders.

“We are there for our customers literally every step of the way.” Peter Morcom, Manager Working with a doctors’ prescription, the company’s pedorthists assess clients’ feet using an in-shoe sensor system that captures data about pressure points. This allows Kintec to custom design orthotics for customers or make the necessary changes to shoes or orthotics to prevent problems or pain. “Kintec even has its own orthotics fabrication lab in Surrey, so it can control the quality of the process from start to finish,” says Morcom. The company also prides itself on having the best selection of performance footwear based on comfort, quality, function and value. Kintec is so confident about finding the right fit for clients that it offers a

30-day comfort guarantee. If someone is not satisfied with their shoes, they can exchange them for free with no hassle. “The whole reason people come to us is to be fitted properly,” says Morcom. “While we are professionals and every foot is unique, the customer is ultimately the best judge of what is comfortable and right for them.” Beyond fit, a commitment to service is key for Kintec, he adds. Staff want to build trust and be a resource customers can turn to and depend on to look out for their best interests. “We are not just looking to sell you something,” says Morcom. “Our whole company philosophy is to keep people active, healthy and on their feet, any way we can.” To that end, Kintec also offers a series of run clinics for beginners or those that want to attempt 10-kilometre, half or full marathon or trail programs from its eight stores, including Maple Ridge. Morcom takes great pleasure in being able to help people achieve their individual health and fitness goals. “Personally, it’s one of my favourite aspects of the job,” he says. “And it’s not just about speed and times; it’s about being healthy and active.” He recalls how great it was to see a man who recently attended one Kintec’s beginner run clinics succeed. “When he finished his first five-kilometre event, his two sons were waiting at the finish line to congratulate him,” says Morcom. “He was ecstatic.” “This is what we do. We help make those moments for people. “We are there for our customers literally every step of the way.”
