Teck spill remains under investigation Blue dye spotted in river helps district with flow testing BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

Teck Trail Operations has launched an investigation following a large volume of chemical solution spilling into Trail's domestic sewer line last week. An incident on Jan. 28 at the smelter resulted in up to 25,000 litres of a sodium hydroxide solution flowing into a sewer line, which leads to the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary's sewer treatment plant before discharging into Bear Creek and then downstream to the Columbia River. “This solution would normally be routed to our Effluent Treatment Plant

for treatment prior to discharge via our permitted outfall,” explained Richard Deane, Teck's manager of environment health and safety and public affairs. The company is now conducting a full investigation to determine exactly what occurred and additional operational safeguards have already been implemented. “The piping that resulted in this incident has been removed and all connections to domestic sewer piping at Trail Operations are being checked,” added Deane. Regulatory authorities including the Provincial Emergency Program, Ministry of Environment and Environment Canada were notified of the incident immediately. Locally, the

spill was quite evident for employees working at the treatment plant that day. “It was kind of like a dark brown substance that was coming into our plant for about a two-hour period,” explained Bryan Teasdale, the regional district's manager of infrastructure and sustainability. “The pH was super high, which is not normal for our operations, so we notified Ministry of Environment and I asked whether there was a spill reported in the area and that's when we got in touch with Teck.” Prior to a meeting with Teck Friday, the regional district did its own flow testing to help better understand how quickly a foreign substance can enter its system and reach the treatment plant. An update to B.C.’s liquor laws has one local event organizer sitting on the fence about what the changes might mean to the younger generation. Last week, the province announced its support of 73 recommendations to modernize rules around liquor licensing that MLA and Parlimentary Secretary John Yap served up for review in December. Right out of the gate, special events will have less red tape attached to liquor licence applications and venues such as sports tournaments and music festivals will no longer have to worry about keeping children out of the beer gardens. The recommendation states that “... I guess only minors, if accomtime will tell panied by a parent how harmful this or guardian, should be permitted in cermight be for kids tain liquor-primary whose parents establishments choose to until a reasonable time. overindulge.” “It took some MARJORIE KIDD fancy footwork to obtain our liquor licence because they don’t normally give one to children’s events,” said Marjorie Kidd, a Rosslander who spearheaded the city’s Children Festival and Benefit concert last fall. “It was tricky so as an event organizer it’s awesome to make the process easier.” As a parent, Kidd gave a mixed review on the new rule that beer gardens no longer need to be cordoned off and kids will be around to roam freely within areas that alcohol is openly served. “I don’t see that it is much different than having a drink in a family restaurant with your kids beside you,” she said. “But there is heavy drinking in beer gardens and things can get quite rowdy and I’m not so sure that is a good thing for kids to be around,” continued Kidd. “There seems to be a lot of hoopla about a law that was already working well. But I guess time will tell how harmful this might be for kids whose parents choose to overindulge.” To date, the venues could only serve beer, wine or coolers, but new liquor regulations allow mixed-spirit drink choices to be served in all public areas including arenas and stadiums. How this will affect hockey games and tournaments or Silver City Days celebrations in the Trail Memorial Centre is not certain, but one Trail councillor does toast the changes. See HAPPY, Page 3

Dye helps track flow FROM PAGE 1 About 20 litres of blue non-toxic dye was dropped into the system via a downtown manhole Friday morning. Traces of this dye left some locals uncomfortable, especially since Teck released discharge details in a news release that same afternoon. Jamie Turnbull submitted a series of photos captured by her fiance who was fishing on the Columbia River below the mall, where Bear Creek meets the river, at about 1 p.m. “While they were fishing they noticed a very thick blue colour that filled the creek and went into the river, it lasted several hours,” she wrote to the Trail Times Sunday. “As many fishermen would know, it is spawning season for trout and this creek is well known for the spawning fish. “This blue liquid was not organic, in fact I am sure that is has something to do with septic, or sewer.” Dye testing is used regularly in house at the treatment plant and

will likely be used more now that part of the regional district’s liquid waste management plan commits to looking at source control in the future. Teasdale likened the process to reading a GPS while you’re driving. “In the middle of the night you don’t know where it was but you can go back and look at a map of where you drove,” he continued. “It’s basically the same idea. You put a dye in at a certain location and with our mapping, it should get to our sewage treatment plant.” Staff at the treatment plant continue to monitor operations as a spill of this kind could impact operations from a procedural perspective. “If a substance does come in and affect the organics, that affects the bugs generating methane,” explained Teasdale. “They’ll die and then they won’t be generating methane and then we lose our process, have to reseed everything and open up the digester to reinoculate it with new stuff.”

‘Happy hour’ returns FROM PAGE 1 “This is a good thing because it will certainly make things easier,” said Coun. Rick Georgetti. “I think it’s a great idea to have a glass of wine with your pasta at the sidewalk cafe and not worry about where your kids are.” In addition to beer garden venues, parents will also have the option to bring children into the local pub to join in a bite, however certain rules still apply and are at the discretion of the Liquor Control Licencing Board (LCLB). According the review, for those establishments currently offering gaming options, the LCLB retains the authority to approve or deny whether minors are allowed based on that minor’s potential access to gaming. At one local bar and eatery, the new rules will not apply to his establishment

because he has no plans to divide the premises into one area for gaming, and the other, for family dining. “We will keep our lottery because we do well with our adult clientele right now,” said Jeff Boag, proprietor of the Arlington Bar & Grill. “I don’t see any reason to change because we have a lot of business people who come in for lunch and may not want kids in here,” he said. However, the return of “happy hour” is a change Boag will consider further down the road. For years, the province’s liquor licences haven’t allowed the lowering of booze prices during certain hours of the day, but the new regulations do allow liquor price variances. “Right now when we open up we charge “x” amount of dollars for alcohol,” explained

Boag. “And we have to keep it that way all day,” he said. “That change is a good thing. Further down the road, depending on what other places do, we will be definitely looking at that option.” Another aspect to Yap’s review includes making liquor available in grocery stores. By the end of his public consultations, Yap said that 75 per cent of respondents were in favour of this option, although how a new policy will roll out is not yet clear. “It’s too early to say what the rules will be,” said David Ferraro of Ferraro Foods. “I have read that it will happen slowly to protect liquor stores and private liquor store sales,” he said. “It’s too early to comment for certain yet, but what I will say is I never thought I would see the day they would even talk about this.”

Rossland

SD20 invests in play for kids By Valerie Rossi Times Staff

Rossland school's younger students will soon have their own turf with plans for a playground for its primary kids. School District 20's board of education just approved $60,000 for a playground structure that will appeal to kindergarteners to Grade 3s, a must since the former Rossland Secondary School now accommodates K-9 under one roof. Rossland's parents advisory council meets thiw week to discuss what the structure will look like and whether any fundraising will take place to top up funds for a grander vision. “It's excellent news and we've been looking forward to some kind of announcement

so that we would know what we would be working with,” said principal Karen Lavender. “We will definitely be talking about what the next steps are moving forward in terms of this money.” The money comes from local capital funding from the sale of MacLean Elementary, according to Natalie Verigin, SD20 secretary-treasurer. Last year the Ministry of Education gave $50,000 to Rossland for a new playground apparatus, funds which were topped up by SD20 as well as through fundraising efforts. But the structure designed for middle-school kids is too mature for the youngsters now sharing a yard since the board decided to sell Maclean last year

as part of its efforts to make cuts to a dwindling budget. The school, that has yet to be renamed, has managed to find a balance between separating primary from secondary students and deliberately mixing the different age groups for learning purposes such as peer mentoring and tutoring, explained Lavender. “Because five year olds and 15 year olds are obviously very developmentally and emotionally different, we also are doing things within the school that separate them when it's appropriate,” she said. “We do have separate recess and lunch playtimes for those kids so that they can play more appropriately with their age groups.”

Majority approve West Creston fire protection By Lorne Eckersley Creston Valley Advance

With the support of a majority of property owners representing more than half of the land in West Creston, certified fire protection for the area is one step closer to becoming a reality. If approved by the RDCK board, the taxation

bylaw necessary to provide funding for fire protection service must be approved by the provincial government before it can be enacted. “It’s the same as any other taxation bylaw,” said Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks. “There is a lengthy and thorough process before it can be put into place.”

Yellow Pages scam targets businesses Health workers get contract BY TOM FLETCHER Black Press

Reports of scammers phoning businesses claiming to be collecting for Yellow Pages advertising have cropped up again in B.C., and there are simple steps to take to protect yourself. Mark Fernandes, spokesman for the Better Business Bureau in B.C., said scammers claiming to be collecting for Yellow Pages is a chronic problem, with complaints about it coming in almost every month. It’s a variation on an old trick, sending fake invoices for common business supplies such as printer cartridges and paper in hopes of sliding them by a busy office administrator. Fernandes said businesses

are also concerned about bad credit reports from missed invoices. “Unfortunately, a lot of these companies that claim the Yellow Pages brand are not located in North America,” he said. Some appeared to be coming from the United Kingdom, but the BBB is unable to confirm their real location. Yellow Pages Group spokesperson Fiona Story said the company is a frequent target for this kind of fraud because of its long-standing brand. It sponsors an annual fraud awareness campaign in March, and offers downloadable pamphlets and other resources on its website, www.yellowpages360solution.ca/resources/fraud/. Customers who receive a

questionable solicitation can check it by calling the Yellow Pages Group customer service department at 1-877-9099356. Yellow Pages Group won a lawsuit in 2012 against a copycat organization doing business as “Yellow Page Ontario,” “Yellow Page Quebec” and similar names. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered the parent company to reimburse people who paid fake invoices and imposed punitive damages. For information on similar suspicious bills or phone calls from businesses other than Yellow Pages Group, contact the Better Business Bureau of Mainland B.C. (mainlandbc. bbb.org) or Vancouver Island (vi.bbb.org).

Hired Equipment Registration West Kootenay District

The West Kootenay District of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is now completing Hired Equipment lists for the upcoming fiscal year.

All individuals or companies who are currently registered through the ministry’s offices in Nelson or Grand Forks will be mailed invitations by the end of January to re-register their equipment for the coming fiscal year. Individuals or companies who were not registered in 2013, but who wish to have their equipment listed, are invited to visit or phone the Nelson or Grand Forks office to obtain the appropriate registration forms. You will be required to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance with minimum $2 million third party liability and a WorkSafe BC clearance letter prior to starting work on any ministry projects. Dump trucks must provide a current weigh slip, front tire size, and manufacturer’s front axle rating. Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year and must be owned or leased-to-own in order to be eligible for registration. Seniority is not transferable from area to area. The deadline for new registrations for the 2014/2015 fiscal year is March 20, 2014. Late registrations will be accepted, but may appear at the bottom of the open list. Note that there is no charge for registering new equipment or for changing or deleting equipment information already listed.

THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - More than 15,000 community-health employees, including home-support workers, alcohol and drug counsellors and staff at mental-health group homes, have ratified a five-year contract with the B.C. government. Members of the multi-union Community Health Bargaining Association voted nearly 79 per cent in favour of the agreement, which was reached four months before the current deal expires, on March 31. The new contract provides a 5.5 per cent wage hike, with the possibility of additional increases if the B.C. economy exceeds annual forecasts set by the Economic Forecast Council during the last four years of the deal. A news release from the government says four agreements with public-sector employees have been negotiated under the same mandate, which applies to contracts that expire on or after Dec. 31, 2013. Finance Minister Mike de Jong says the deal benefits all British Columbians by ensuring the services provided by people who work in the community-health sector will continue to be delivered effectively and at a cost that’s affordable for government and taxpayers. The association consists of members from several unions, including the Hospital Employees Union, the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union and the Professional Employees Association.

Based on current projections, that option won’t be available for 2014-15 “At this time, there will be no other surplus to be used for anything,” Roller Routley said. Work on tackling the deficit will begin in the spring during consultations with employees and parents groups. “We have lots and lots of ideas of where we can go to (save money), it’s just a matter of sitting down and having a conversation,” said Roller Routley. Educators are worried about what those ideas will include. “I don’t know what they can do. We’re at bare bones as it is,” said Leslea Woodward, president of the Okanagan Skaha Teachers’ Union. “It is very concerning for us and, again, it’s time government started (increasing) funding.”

Wiarton Willie says six more weeks of winter

THE CANADIAN PRESS WIARTON, Ont. - Canada’s major prognosticating rodents provided a split decision on whether the country is in for an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Ontario’s Wiarton Willie emerged from his cozy den Sunday morning and immediately spotted Briefs his shadow, which according to groundhog folklore means Canadians can expect six more weeks of what has already been a long, cold, snowy winter. Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam was the first groundhog out, delivering a promising forecast for winter weary Canucks after he did not see his shadow - signalling an early spring. In Manitoba, the lesser-known Winnipeg Willow also did not see her shadow. But regardless of what the woodchuck weathermen say, Environment Canada predicts the frigid temperatures that have gripped much of the country the past two months will likely persist through February. Even provinces that have enjoyed unseasonably warm temperatures, such as British Columbia and parts of Alberta, are expected to feel the chill in the coming weeks.

Alberta

Wild horse cull begins

THE CANADIAN PRESS SUNDRE, Alta. - The capture of some of Alberta’s wild horses has begun, according to aerial images. Photographers flying over the Willow Creek area near Sundre report seeing piles of hay laid out at capture sites. Last week the province approved the capture of up to 200 feral horses because it says they are an invasive species and cause damage to the environment. While some of the horses will be kept for breeding, others will be slaughtered. Those campaigning against the slaughter say they will start “counter-baiting” this weekend to lure the horses away from the capture sites. The environment critic for the Wildrose party, Joe Anglin, says there isn’t enough scientific evidence to support the cull. “The PC government insists on moving ahead with a feral horse cull without a clear objective or enough scientific data to support a cull,” he says. “Hunting, trapping, culling and scientific tagging are very important tools in wildlife management. However, should culling be required, Wildrose would give priority to an adoption program.”

Conservatives set to overhaul Elections Canada THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA Opposition critics say they’ll be scouring the fine print when the Conservative government introduces legislation Tuesday morning to overhaul Elections Canada. Chief electoral officer Marc Mayrand has long been calling for reforms, including tighter reporting rules on automated phone calls during election campaigns, penalties for impersonating election officials, stronger investigative powers and more protections for voter privacy. The government was poised to introduce a bill last April but balked at the last minute after Conservative MPs who were briefed on its contents objected to some of the measures. The latest version isn’t getting off to a much better start. Pierre Poilievre, the minister responsible for democratic reform, told the House of Commons on Monday that he’d consulted with the chief electoral officer before the new bill was drafted. Poilievre labelled as “false” opposition accusations that he hadn’t consulted with Mayrand. “I did meet with the CEO of Elections Canada some time ago and we had a terrific

and a very long meeting, at which I listened carefully to all of his ideas,” said Poilievre. Not so, Elections Canada confirmed just minutes later. “The chief electoral officer has not been consulted, and we heard the minister’s comments,” said spokesman John Enright. “There’s been no consultation on the contents of the bill.” Craig Scott, the NDP democratic reform critic, accused the Conservatives of taking “a completely bad faith approach” to the reform legislation. “What kind of game is Mr. Poilievre playing?” said Scott. “It could well be that he sat down with Mr. Mayrand for some kind of a courtesy, I’m-the-new-minister, you’re-the-chief-electoral-officer meeting, and now he’s trying to spin that as a consultation. This is not a good start.” The Conservative party has had a difficult relationship with Elections Canada since at least 2006, when the elections watchdog caught the party over-spending its election campaign limit by more than $1 million through a scheme that laundered national ad buys through local campaigns. Poilievre led the

government’s fierce denials for years before the party finally pleaded guilty in September 2011, five years and two elections later. Ralph Goodale, the veteran Liberal deputy leader, said there’s little evidence of good faith when it comes to the Harper Conservatives rewriting election law. “It’s ominous ... given their track record with Elections Canada, which has been confrontational right from Day 1, and then resentful. It now may have moved to vindictive,” said Goodale. “It’s significant that they’ve prepared this (bill) without any serious discussion with anyone at Elections Canada. I think everyone would be well advised to read the fine print with a great deal of care. “This could in effect be the gutting of Elections Canada.” There have been a string of confrontations between Conservatives and Elections Canada since 2006, including a continuing investigation of thousands of fraudulent robocalls made during the 2011 campaign in an apparent effort to suppress the vote. A Federal Court judge ruled last May that the Conservative party’s tightly guarded voter database was “the

here are two reasons why the B.C. government must appeal the latest court ruling that damns its conduct, assesses damages of $2 million plus lawyer bills and appears to hand the B.C. Teachers’ Federation the keys to the treasury. The first is practical politics. The legislature reopens Feb. 11, ironically right after Family Day. An appeal will give rookie Education Minister Peter Fassbender the cover he will need during the daily 30 minutes of sniper fire that is Question Period. Rise. “It’s before the courts, Madam Speaker.” Sit. Even the trigger-happy Premier Christy Clark will be staying in her trench, after the bleeding wound she received from Justice Susan Griffin last week. The second reason is practical economics. The 2014 budget has gone to press. Government lawyers told the court that

retroactively returning to 2001 classroom rules could cost $500 million, an estimate Griffin dismissed as “speculative.” It could include compensation to retired teachers for earnings they gave up. This retroactive lump would be on top of the ongoing costs, running to hundreds of millions more as 60 school districts try to reassemble the world of 2002. This union victory began when the Supreme Court of Canada invented a constitutional right to collective bargaining in 2007, based on “freedom of association” in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The BCTF is piggybacking on that landmark decision, in favour of the Hospital Employees’ Union, after Gordon Campbell ran roughshod over their sweetheart contract from the Glen Clark years. That one was settled for $85 million, including

retroactive payments. In case there are parents and taxpayers who still believe that all would be calm had the NDP won the 2013 election, allow me to put that to rest. NDP leader Adrian Dix took to his Facebook page a couple of days after last week’s ruling, joining calls for an apology from Clark. That would be for what Justice Griffin characterized as deliberately provoking a strike to build public support for the latest of a long line of settlements imposed on teachers.

Within minutes, Dix received this caustic response from Tara Ehrcke, president of the Greater Victoria teachers’ union. “But where was the NDP during the election campaign?” Ehrcke asked Dix. “You committed a measly $100 million – a third of what it will take to restore class sizes and less than the [NDP] platform in 2009, and only pocket change more than the Liberals’ Learning Improvement Fund of $75 million.” Note the mindset of this prominent member of the radical fringe that controls the BCTF. “A measly $100 million.” An extra $25 million? “Pocket change.” This is the same union boss who demanded that hundreds of teachers be hired this week, so reorganizing current classes in the middle of the school year to make them smaller by one or two students.

Parents and students would endure yet another major disruption of the public school system. And who needs an increase in rural ambulance service or drug and alcohol treatment for street kids. Let’s get those teacher-librarians back in schools, and slightly reduce class sizes to offset declining enrolment! No government, B.C. Liberal, NDP or Green Party, can let its unions control their own payroll, just as no private company can. That goes double for this union, which had its own obvious role in provoking an illegal strike in 2012. It made outrageous benefit demands and cancelled extra-curriculars for months before it even specified its wage demand. Bargaining, if you can call it that, resumes this week. Both sides need to cease fire. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

TV LISTINGS Super Bowl

Broadcast breaks record THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Fox’s Super Bowl telecast of the Seahawks’ victory of the Broncos is the mostwatched television event in U.S. history, drawing 111.5 million viewers on Sunday night. The Nielsen company said Monday the telecast broke a viewership record set by the Super Bowl two years ago between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. It’s the fourth time in five years that a Super Bowl game has set a viewership record. Last year’s game, with 108.6 million viewers, was the exception. The game kept up its appeal to viewers despite being relatively non-competitive.

The peacekeepers represent more than 40 nations and undertake intensive Mission Preparedness Training and extensive in-country preparations. The approximately 150 people on the ground in South Sudan are a mixture of local peacekeepers as well as those from other countries such as Canada. Their task is to create lasting alternatives to war and to help establish conditions in which permanent peace can take root. What is interesting is that for the same dollars spent every 4 months by the world’s militaries, Nonviolent Peaceforce could send 2,000 well-trained, professional peacekeepers into a war zone for an entire year. As Mel Duncan, Founder of Nonviolent Peaceforce stated: “Nonviolent Peaceforce is a responsible approach to violent conflict, one firmly rooted in historical reality and emanating hope. By hope, I do not mean sentimental fantasies. I mean hard-nosed hope based on concrete, effective actions.” Let’s give peace a chance. Alex Atamanenko is the MP for BC Southern Interior

Ford lawsuit impossible to ignore An editorial from the Toronto Star Why pay attention to the new lawsuit leveled against Mayor Rob Ford, especially considering its source: a convicted criminal? After all, what’s contained in a formal statement of claim is just that - a claim, unsubstantiated and untested in court. By hiring a lawyer to do the paperwork, or even acting on their own, just about anyone can lodge a legal claim alleging just about anything. That’s why if a career criminal and convicted drug dealer had filed a statement of claim accusing Calgary’s highly respected Mayor Naheed Nenshi, for example, of involvement in a jailhouse beating, the collective reaction would be a shrug. Instead of making headlines, it would rightfully be considered a crank lawsuit from a dubious source. But reaction was far different when Ford was named in a claim, filed by his sister’s former common-law spouse, alleging the mayor’s involvement in an episode of shocking prison violence. Rather than being brushed off as the ravings of a disreputable jailbird, it made news around the world. It was extensively reported in Britain, across the United States, and even generated

headlines in Australia. Scott MacIntyre, a convicted drug dealer with an extensive prison history, was savagely beaten in March 2012 while being held at the Toronto West Detention Centre. He suffering a broken leg and facial injuries, including four teeth “sheared at the gum line.” In a claim filed with Ontario Superior Court and dated Jan. 29, MacIntyre alleges this was done at Ford’s behest, to keep him silent after he had threatened to expose the mayor’s drug and alcohol abuse and his association with criminals. Also named in the lawsuit is Aedan Petros, a former football player on the Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School team previously coached by Ford and who was being held in the same prison range as MacIntyre. Petros was serving time in connection with a violent home invasion. The other defendants are another coach associated with the football team, and Ontario’s Ministry of Correctional Services. Again, none of these claims has been proven in court. Ford’s lawyer, Dennis Morris, dismissed the allegations as “irresponsible and spurious.” Ford described suggestions of his involvement in MacIntyre’s beating as “far-fetched” and “way out there.”

Let’s assume Ford is innocent. Similar “far-fetched” allegations leveled at other mayors wouldn’t attract this kind of public notice. So why is he being treated differently? Well, Ford is guilty of smoking crack cocaine while holding office, engaging in illegal drug deals, and being out-of-control drunk. He was also shown in a video indulging in a violent rant, at one point declaring he would rip his victim’s throat out. Ford has admitted all that and apologized. But contrition came only after a failed effort to keep his reckless behaviour a secret, a campaign that included outright lying and character assassination against his foes. That vile cover-up supplies what some may perceive as a motive for doing what MacIntyre alleges. And Ford’s extensive criminal contacts could provide the means. That’s why this possibly spurious, and certainly untested, statement of claim is receiving so much attention. If this mayor hadn’t smoked crack or associated with criminals, had he refrained from descending into “drunken stupors” and buying drugs, it would be easy to dismiss MacIntyre’s claim. Sadly, for both Ford and the city he represents, it’s not so easy now.

Smoke Eaters fall in barnburner with Merritt By Jim Bailey

Times Sports Editor

After managing just one goal in two games, the Trail Smoke Eaters found their scoring touch Saturday but still couldn’t keep pace with the Merritt Centennials. On Friday, the Smoke Eaters were shut out by the Vernon Vipers, 5-0, yet in a wild game Saturday the Smokies scored six times but still came up on the short end of a 9-6 loss to the Centennials at the Cominco Arena. The Smokies called up four affiliate players (AP) to subsidize an ailing talent pool due to injuries to goaltender Adam Todd, Jesse Knower, Adam Wheeldon, Nathan Browne, Jakson Elynuik, and Dylan Mascarin. Castlegar Rebel goalie Nate Rabbitt got the nod in net, while Sheldon Hubbard and Braden Fuller of the B.V. Nitehawks and Colby Livingstone of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats were inserted into the line up. However, it was North Van native Taylor Armbruster who netted his first three goals of

The Game was tied 5-5 after two periods, but the Cents would erupt for four goals in the third period with Pare potting two back-to-back power play goals to put the Cents up for good 7-5. The Smoke Eaters started

strong, when Brandon Volpe won a faceoff back to Brian Basilico who fired his 11th goal of the season over the glove of Cents netminder Devin Kero at 2:55 of the first period. Armbruster would then put

the Smokies up 2-0 midway through the frame, taking a pass from Jake Lucchini and beating Kero again glove side. But the Cents would strike back when Cuglietta found James Neil alone in front of the net, and Jeff Wight would tie it with 16 seconds remaining in the period. Wight roofed it over a down-and-out Rabbitt after a scramble in front of the Smokies’ goalie sent the loose puck to an opportunistic Wight waiting in the slot. The Cents outshot the Smokies 17-9 in the period, but the 2-2 tie wouldn’t last long as Scott Davidson picked up a Joel Webb feed, streaked down the left side, faked a centring pass, and fired it over the shoulder of Kero. However, two quick goals by Zac Hartley and Scott Patterson would give the Cents their first lead. Armbruster would even it again at 7:29 of the second., stepping into a Braedan Cross pass, and wiring it by Kero. Just over a minute later Gavin Gould would walk in alone on Rabbitt and beat See VEES, Page 12

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks lost their second game in a row last week and surrendered their claim to top spot in the KIJHL Neil Murdoch division, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Fernie Ghostriders on Friday. The Nitehawks line up has been rocked by injury and illness of late with regulars Ryan Edwards, Russell Mortlock, captain Archie McKinnon, Kyle Hope, Jacob Boyzuk, and goaltender Grayson Sharpe still ailing. The Hawks travelled to Fernie with just 13 regulars and APs Mitch Titus and Jake Yuris in tow, and despite outshooting the Ghostriders, 31-27, too many penalties eventually took its toll. Fernie’s Dylan Robertson scored the winning goal on a power play at 3:47 of the second period to break a 1-1 deadlock and lift the Ghostriders to the win. Following a Nitehawks penalty, Robertson converted a pass from Josh Terves to put the Ghostriders up 2-1 and Aaron Neufeld would net another PP goal to ice it in the third. Penalties have been the Achilles’ heal of the Nitehawks in the two losing contests. Fernie enjoyed 10 powerplay opportunities to the Nitehawks three, and cashed in on two, while Creston had eight PP chances, scoring twice in a 7-3 Nitehawk loss to the Thunder Cats Tuesday.

Dallas Calvin has scored three of the Nitehawks four goals in the team’s latest two losses, and now leads the team in scoring with 36 goals and 36 assists. The win puts the Ghostriders within one point of second place Kimberley Dynamiters in the Eddie Murdoch division standings. With just seven games remaining in the regular season, Beaver Valley has a crucial home-and-home series next weekend against Nelson, in what could be a deciding factor in the race for the division title. A six-point weekend from Trail native and league-leading scorer Jamie Vlanich helped lift the Leafs to a four point lead over the Nitehawks in the Neil Murdoch division. Vlanich had a goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Spokane Braves on Friday and followed that up with a two-point night in a 5-1 win over Fernie Saturday, to give the Leafs 73 points to the Hawks 69. However, B.V. has an all-important two games in hand. Vlanich and forward Travis Wellman, who is third in league scoring, deliver a solid one-two punch for Nelson. The Hawks will need to neutralize the talented forwards if they hope to reclaim the division title they won in 2012. The Hawks host the Leafs at the B.V. Arena at 7:30 p.m.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Three words raced through Seattle Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith’s mind as he streaked toward the end zone in the Super Bowl, returning his interception of a pass by Peyton Manning: “Don’t get caught.” That, Smith explained Monday at a news conference, would be the “typical thoughts a defensive player

(would have) with the ball.” And he heeded his own advice, going 69 yards for a touchdown on that play. He added a fumble recovery later and earned MVP honours as Seattle beat Manning’s Denver Broncos 43-8 for the Seahawks’ first NFL championship. At no moment during Sunday’s action did Smith think he would take home the award.

McDonald’s in Trail is now

By way of explaining in a euphoric locker room Sunday night why he was an appropriate choice for an MVP from these Seahawks, Smith said: “I’m just fortunate to be a part of it, fortunate to get opportunities.” He went on: “You might have been overlooked. You might feel like you can make plays and never got the opportunity.” Truth is, the Seahawks were the lucky ones. Because even though Smith was not supposed to be a starter this season, a player with zero interceptions in his first two years in the league, he always was ready when called upon. It was Smith who wound up with the victory-sealing interception at the end of Seattle’s NFC championship game victory two weeks ago, grabbing the football after Richard Sherman deflected a pass in the end zone. And then, in the biggest game of all, Smith’s pick-6 off a fluttering ball - after teammate Cliff Avril made contact with Manning during the throw made it 22-0 late in the first half Sunday, and Seattle was on its way. “I was like, ‘Again!? No way.’ I didn’t believe it,” Smith said. He grabbed a fumble later, too, capping quite a late-season surge. “I’ve always just been taught to run to the ball and good things will happen for me,” Smith said. “I played running back as a kid, so it’s always been the most exciting thing to have the ball in my hands.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BURBANK, Calif. - Jay Leno, as affably efficient backstage as he is in front of the camera, avoids waxing poetic about his 22-year “Tonight Show” run that draws to a close Thursday. Instead, he relies on numbers to tell the story. Leno’s tenure is second only to Johnny Carson’s 30 years; “Tonight” was No. 1 among viewers when he took it over and will be when he hands it off to Jimmy Fallon; he’ll have taped more shows than any predecessor, Carson included, with the final and 4,610th one. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II can keep 65-yearold Prince Charles cooling his heels. Leno doesn’t have the power to do the same with Fallon, 39. The “Late Night” host is moving the show from its longtime Burbank home to its New York (MJHP TZY \JJPQ^ Ć^JWX birthplace when he debuts as host on Feb. 17.

Explain day of privacy to nervy parents Mailbox

tal. While we trust you thanked them for their earlier support, once you were home, you needed time to adjust. You asked for one day, and they resented it. Your mother sounds like the type who could undermine your authority as a parent, so hang tough. Tell her that you and your husband needed a day to recuperate and some quiet time as a family, and you hoped they would respect that. Add that they are welcome to visit, provided they can stop insulting you and creating a negative environment for the children. The rest is up to them. Dear Annie: We are

the upper floors. It’s been two weeks since the last guests left, and my wife still has a cough from the build up of her pet allergies. We had to purchase a new blanket for one of the sofa beds because a guest dog slept on it. Every time we vacuum the carpet, it brings up the dander. We want our family members to feel welcome, but how can we get them to comply with the boundaries we set? Do we have to pay for them to stay at a hotel or board their pets? -- Help Dear Help: No, but you need to be more assertive about enforcing your boundaries. Tell the family that you love having them, but your wife’s allergies make it impossible for the dogs to stay anywhere but the laundry room at night. If they cannot abide by that simple request, you will be happy to recommend nearby

pet-friendly hotels and boarding kennels. Dear Annie: I’d like to address your senior driving respondent from Salem, Mass: So you are the one driving too slowly with his foot on the brake You’re impeding the flow of traffic. Worse yet, if

your foot is always on the brake, then your brake lights are always on. So how am I supposed to know when you’re actually stopping? It is time for you to turn in your car keys. Not because you’re 93, but because you’re a

bad driver. -- Baton Rouge, La. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast.net.

retired and consider ourselves to be hospitable. We maintain a guest bedroom, as well as two sofa beds for overnight guests. In addition, we host friends and families for meals, especially around the holidays. My wife struggles with seasonal allergies, as well as an allergy to animal dander, and so we try to limit her exposure. She has undergone allergy shots and uses two prescription nasal sprays. She can tolerate short visits with pets if she has plenty of tissues. Recently, we hosted overnight stays of our adult children and their families, as well as our siblings. We told them their pets were welcome, but the animals would have to sleep in the laundry room on the lower level. Unfortunately, these guests said they couldn’t sleep without having their pets next to their beds and insisted on bringing them to

Dear Annie: Last summer, I gave birth to twins who were several weeks early. Throughout the time they were in the hospital, we had family support. My husband and I made the decision that for the first day home, we’d have no visitors. This enraged my mother. She felt we stole away her joy of being a grandma and that we were very rude. Since that day, I’ve received letters and emails stating just what she thinks of me. In fact, many family members have turned their backs on us due to the situation. I’ve made attempts to fix things, but it only gets worse. This has been going on since August. What should I do? -- Mom of Twins Dear Mom: Your family is incredibly nervy to expect parents of newborn twins to want family members in their home the first day out of the hospi-

And don’t give away the farm. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Today the Moon is in your sign, dancing with fuzzy Neptune. This ignites your imagination and makes you feel whimsical, lighthearted and sympathetic to everyone. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You won’t mind putting your wants and needs second to the wants and needs of others today, because you feel genuinely concerned for others. Remember: True generosity is giving what is needed. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A conversation with a female friend will be intuitively uncanny today. It is almost as if you can read

each other’s thoughts, wants and needs. Spooky! LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Secrets about your private life might be made public today, especially in the eyes of authority figures -- bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs. Be careful. Guard these secrets if you can. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You want to run away and join the circus today. Anything unusual and different will appeal to you, because you need to escape so that you can have more adventure in your life. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You might use the funds of others or your share of something to help someone who is in need. This is a noble and rewarding choice. Plus, what goes around comes around. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) This is a good day to mend broken fences with partners

and close friends. It’s also a good day to explore unusual activities like the Ouija board, tarot readings or studying paranormal activities. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Trust your gut instincts at work today. Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) This is a fabulous day for artists and anyone involved in making a creative decision, because you are in touch with your Muse. Romance will be tender and rewarding. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) It’s easy to feel tenderhearted toward family members today. In fact, someone might need to confide in you, or vice versa -- perhaps you need a

sympathetic ear. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) This is a productive day for writers, teachers, actors and people who need to persuade others with imagination. Don’t worry if you spend lots of time daydreaming. YOU BORN TODAY You are strong and convincing. Others know that you mean business. You also have a physical presence that conveys to others that they can have confidence

in you, and indeed, this confidence is well-founded. You have a many-faceted character, much of which is hidden. This year a major change will take place, perhaps as significant as something that happened around 2005.
