‘I have found my calling’ Kwantlen Park Secondary student amazed by the shores of Antarctica

or Kwantlen Park Secondary student Shakti Ramkumar, being environmentally active in Surrey was the impetus to wanting to see environmental stewardship firsthand throughout the world.

Having participated in numerous local and national school science fairs, Ramkumar had heard about an organization called Students on Ice, but it wasn’t until she saw

poster in her school counselor’s office about a polar expedition to Antarctica that she took a keen interest.

Based in Ottawa, Students on Ice offers high school and university students from around the world unique education expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic to give them a new understanding and respect for the planet.

Grade 12 Surrey student Shakti Ramkumar recently travelled to Antarctica.

father beaten in a violent home invasion in Newton last week.

On Wednesday at 5:20 p.m., two men broke through the door of a home in the 7500-block of 123A Street and tied up the family in the back of the home.

They then began making demands for items in the home.

Several children were tied up,

including two Grade 2 twins and two infants, as were a caregiver and another woman. However, the home invasion was interrupted when the father got home.

He was assaulted and later taken to hospital with a swollen jaw.

RCMP believe the suspects, described as South Asian men wearing hoodies, took off in what appeared to be a black Honda Civic.

Mounties have not speculated

about what motivated the incident or whether anything was taken from the home.

They do believe it was a targeted home invasion and not a random occurrence.

A HIGH-RISK sexual offender with

a lengthy criminal history who has attacked both women and girls is out of custody and plans to live in Surrey.

B.C. Corrections issued public notice Friday (Jan. 31) about the release of Narinder Wasan, 49.

He’s described as having a “versatile” pattern of sexual offending, having assaulted females of all ages.

Wasan has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1986, with offences often involving approaching strangers in public places. His crimes include sex assault, sex assault with a weapon, sexual interference, assault, failure to comply, uttering threats, and breach of trust, as well as driving, property and drug offences.

His most recent sexual Narinder offence, for which Wasan he was sentenced to five years in prison, took place in a Vancouver park. It was there that he attacked 52-year-old woman and tried to tear her clothing off and pinned her on the ground.

He is described as South Asian, 5’7”, weighing 180 pounds with a bald head and brown eyes.

Creating futures without limits Student philanthropic society helps other students pursue their dreams

Saurabh Bangar (second from right) and a group of his peers have created the SOAR Philanthropic Society.

Bangar had a friend who was an incredibly dedicated student with the enviable grades to prove it.

“He had an average of about 98 or 99 per cent,” Bangar recalls.

With a passion for medicine, he had high hopes of making a difference in the world. His finances, however, were not as far-reaching.

That’s when it struck Bangar: “People put in so much time to school, but don’t have the financial means to pursue their big dreams. I want to help out

these people.”

Bangar, a Queen Elizabeth Secondary grad who now attends SFU, rallied some friends and they made and sold customized T-shirts, giving the profits as scholarships to Surrey schools.

“Then we realized that maybe that instead of giving out small amounts, like $500, we could give out bigger funds.”

Now called SOAR Philanthropic Society, Bangar and eight other postsecondary students registered their group as a non-profit last year.

Last September, the society held an event that raised $5,000 in profits,

which SOAR (Success, Opportunity, Achievement, Results) will divvy up between five deserving Surrey graduates this year.

Bangar hopes it’s only the beginning.

There are four fundraising events planned for this year,.

“Our biggest goal is to be the biggest non-profit organization that could one day fund a student’s entire postsecondary education,” said Bangar, SOAR’s president and CEO. Donations and partnerships are welcome. Information, as well as applications to apply for the scholarships, are available at www.soarps.org

Students: ‘saw the whole food chain’ From page 1 “I have been working on a lot of sustainability projects in school and I have an interest in science,” says Ramkumar.

“We do invasive species removal in Kwantlen Park twice a week.”

Along with the school’s Eco Club Ramkumar started with a classmate, the Grade 12 student also leads the Surrey Youth Sustainability Network, a partnership with the City of Surrey that encourages students from across the city to work together on sustainable projects.

But it was a chance to travel to Antarctica that had her dreaming.

Ramkumar applied for a scholarship through the Leacross Foundation, a Canadian foundation with a goal of helping women and children access opportunities in business, health, the arts and education.

“I was one of five girls offered a scholarship,” she says. “It (Students on Ice) was $14,000, which

is crazy money, there’s no way I could have gone without (the foundation’s) support.”

Following a flight to Toronto to meet up with the other 70 students invited on the trip, the group flew to Miami, then Buenos Aires, and finally to the small city of Ushuaia, on the tip of Argentina - the southernmost city in the world.

After boarding a ship by the same name, the students sailed the Drake passage on the Ushuaia, a 280-foot polar expedition and arctic tourism vessel.

The water was rough, with large swells, and many of the students were sea sick on the two day-trip until they crossed the Antarctic Convergence and into Antarctic waters. Then the group was able to take numerous Zodiac cruises, landing on Half Moon Island and Elephant Island.

together. We saw the whole food chain, top to bottom – whales eating seals, seals eating penguins, whales chasing whales,” she says. “It really struck home in a way that it has never done before about how important it is to preserve it all.”

The younger teens spent the evenings listening to expert speakers and watching some of the university students perform various experiments on board the ship, including harvesting phytoplankton – a microscopic plant-like organism vital to the marine food chain – and collecting ice core samples .

Now back in Surrey, Ramkumar is working on a presentation to help inspire youth and schools throughout the city.

“When you’re talking about saving the planet and sustainability, it’s not about policies or politicians, it’s about preserving the amazing wildlife, snow and ice, the food chain,” she says. “We often think a one-degree change in temperature is nothing, but for the oceans that’s huge, and seeing the wildlife and realizing they are the ones who will be affected by the change, it’s pretty amazing.”

Although she is planning on enrolling in UBC’s engineering program in the fall, visiting Antarctica has definitely changed her outlook on the environment, “I would love to go back and participate in more of the experiments someday,” she says. “I think I have found my calling.”

Routine traffic stop leads to load of alleged fake ID Surrey man charged after stolen mail, passports, driver’s licences and other identification discovered by police

A ROUTINE traffic stop in North Vancouver resulted in the seizure of hundreds of pieces of allegedly stolen and fake ID, and a criminal charge for a Surrey man.

When North Vancouver RCMP pulled a rental cube van over Jan. 15, the driver produced identification in a name that wasn’t his.

Further inspection of the van uncovered bags of stolen mail, various pieces of ID, including passports, driver’s licenses, social insurance cards, credit cards and what police called “sophisticated

documentation/forgery equipment.”

Mounties estimate there are more than 500 potential victims linked to the seized items.

A “robbery kit,” containing zap straps, a balaclava, pepper spray, handcuffs and knives were also found in the van.

Police said the investigation revealed the allegedly stolen property came from break and enters and theft from vehicles and mailboxes throughout the Lower Mainland.

Charged is 27-year-old Benjamin Best, who faces one count of personation. He remains in cus-

tody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 11.

“This is a complex investigation with thousands of pieces of evidence, requiring detailed examination and documentation,” said North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong.

“Police are reminding all victims of stolen identification and mail to notify their local police agency of their loss.”

Police say Best will likely face further charges related to the investigation.

Education ruling fraught with politics

Some estimates suggest the cost to taxpayers for implementing the judgement could total more than $500 million. If that indeed is the case, the provincial government is almost certain to appeal, as Premier Christy Clark hinted at last Tuesday.

The ruling by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Susan Griffin speculated (because there is no hard evidence on the record, due to cabinet confidentiality) that the provincial government deliberately stalled on renegotiating the class size and composition provisions with the BCTF in 2011. Griffin was the author of an earlier court ruling calling for new legislation within a year.

In her ruling, she stated, “(Negotiators’) strategy was to put such pressure on the union that it would provoke a strike by the union. The government representatives thought this would give government the opportunity to gain political support for imposing legislation on the union.”

Nothing else in the lengthy ruling, other than a suggestion that cabinet documents back up this assertion, offers any proof. Those cabinet documents have not been released, but were used as evidence in the trial.

The class size and composition provisions were inserted in a contract imposed by the former NDP government on school boards. They had resisted, fearing that the rigid guidelines would make it very difficult to properly staff classrooms.

In fact, what happened is that classrooms which were one student over the limit were sometimes split in two, or the extra student was transported to another school. While this certainly benefited teachers, its impact on students was questionable.

There is no doubt that if classes are too large, it has an effect on how students learn. And the number of special needs students in a classroom must be at a manageable level. But hard and fast limits, imposed by a judge, will be costly to taxpayers, and have limited benefit for students.

The first is practical politics. The legislature reopens Feb. 11, ironically right after Family Day. An appeal will give rookie Education Minister Peter Fassbender the cover he will need during the daily 30 minutes of sniper fire that is Question Period.

Parents and students would endure yet another major disruption of the public school system.

And who needs an increase in rural ambulance service or drug and alcohol treatment for street kids. Let’s get those teacherlibrarians back in schools, and slightly reduce class sizes to offset declining enrolment!

No government, B.C. Liberal, NDP or Green party, can let its unions control their own payroll, just as no private company can.

That goes double for this union, which had its own obvious role in provoking an illegal strike in 2012. It made outrageous benefit demands and cancelled extra-curriculars for months before it even specified its wage demand.

Bargaining, if you can call it that, resumes this week. Both sides need to cease fire.

I sincerely request council to pass a bylaw banning parking fees on lots associated with provision of medical services throughout Surrey.

This type of restriction on gouging medical “victims” has already been passed by Delta council, demonstrating strong public leadership.

If Surrey council is not brave enough to take on these parking monsters, then please consider a bylaw that would force these companies to have their fees and penalty charges in Surrey reviewed annually and approved by council or city staff before implementation.

In no way am I criticizing our medical experts for this overrun as they provide sterling services that are difficult to schedule with the wide variety of situations involved.

What was shocking to discover was Imperial Parking has the authority to demand a $60 payment in seven days for a small infraction, or $80 if paid later.

These fees seem excessive, particularly as Imperial has just increased their rates again, now to $2.75 per hour – an extra 10 per cent increase in the last few months, while the cost of living is only increasing at two or three per cent annually.

Serial criminals draining police resources: Chief Handful of criminals committing hundreds of crimes

offenders responsible for hundreds of offences in Delta are draining police resources, and the criminal justice system is ill-equipped to deal with them, says Delta’s police chief.

“A lot of these people have concurrent disorders, which is drug addiction combined with mental illness,” said Chief Const. Jim Cessford.

“Often they are committing crimes just to stay alive. Putting them in jail doesn’t work, these people need treatment.”

Cessford presented the Delta Police Board with a report last month detailing the issues the local police force is having with a handful of offenders who are responsible for hundreds of crimes.

One chronic offender, a 26-year-old Tsawwassen man, has already had 70 criminal charges laid against him, the majority for property crimes to support his daily drug habit of crack and methamphetamine, which incarceration has done little to deter.

“Upon release from prison, [he] often enters rehabilitation for a few days, relapses and goes on a drug binge and crime spree,” the report states.

In October of last year, the man made headlines after police caught him breaking into a home in Tsawwassen.

The report notes the individual suffers from schizophrenia and has admitted he hears voices and has hallucinations.

Considered violent and suicidal, his condition is exacerbated by his heavy use of injected crystal meth.

A North Delta man in his late 40s has had 142 charges brought against him since the age of 19.

Since moving to Delta in 2009, the chronic offender and drug user has had more than 70 run-ins with local police. The report details how thefts matching the offender’s modus operandi within 1.5 kilometers of his residence dropped by close to 97 per cent while he was incarcerated.

“If we see a spike, we’ll check to see if our chronic offenders are out, and sure enough, they’ll

“We’ll target them again and put them back in jail, and the cycle continues.”

But jail doesn’t provide the kind of treatment chronic offenders with concurrent disorders require, according to Cessford, and locking them up and throwing away the key isn’t the answer.

While the report concludes that there are no simple solutions to the issue of chronic offenders, it does note the traditional punitive approach, including longer prison sentences, is very costly and does not solve root causes of criminal activity.

“An evidence-based treatment approach would include mandatory treatment specific to the needs of the offender whether in-custody or through a communitybased model,” the report states.

Cessford said the cost to put people in jail is prohibitive and it isn’t working. Money saved by not prosecuting and jailing chronic offenders could be better used to create treatment facilities and long-term support programs.

The report notes that prison is the most expensive approach to managing offenders and with the Canadian prison system costing over $4 billion per year, there is a need to evaluate the current approach to chronic offenders.

In contrast, the report notes that the state of Texas has recently undergone changes within its justice system to move away from incarceration and towards supported release programs.

Instead of building more prisons, money in Texas was filtered into probation strategies that focused on supervision and treatment practices, with the aim of reducing recidivism.

Cessford says he would like to see a similar approach taken here in B.C., but that would require the cooperation of all levels of government, and a variety of public health and safety organizations.

“If we pull together, we can ensure these people get the help they need,” Cessford said. “And we’ll all be better off.”

who was convicted of producing marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking has been handed concurrent 18-month conditional sentences for the crimes.

Nhuc Minh Ta, 48, learned his fate Jan. 23 in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.

According to the reasons for sentence, officers with Surrey RCMP’s Marijuana Enforcement Team found a “relatively sophisticated” grow-op while executing a search warrant at a house in the 17200-block of 64A Street on Sept. 1, 2010.

The home’s basement was divided into five separate grow rooms containing a total of 584 plants at different stages of development; upstairs, five terrariums with 287 marijuana clones were located.

At trial, held Jan. 7-10 and Aug. 19 of 2013, the

Conditions of Ta’s term include one year of house arrest during which he may only leave his home for work, court or medical appointments, or religious-services, with the exception of four hours per week on a Saturday or Sunday for errands or exercise.

For the final six months of the term, Ta must abide by a curfew of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Red Velvet Heart Crinkle Cookie 1 box red velvet cake mix 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 1/2 cup canola oil 1 tsp vanilla extract Powdered sugar (for rolling the cookies) Heart shaped cookie cutter, (optional)

PREPARATION: Note: you don’t have to cut the cookies into heart shapes.

They can be left round!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or grease lightly.

In a large bowl, combine cake mix and flour. Whisk until clumps disappear. In the bowl, mix together cake mix, flour, eggs, oil and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Take 1 tablespoon of cookie dough and form

into a ball. Roll the ball in powdered sugar until fully coated. Place cookie dough balls on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, or until edges are set and cookies begin to crack.

Let cookies sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes. If desired, cut cookies into heart shapes while they are still warm, using a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

Transfer cookies to a wire cooling rack and cool completely.

Optional: Dust with additional powdered sugar.

Red Velvet Heart Crinkle Cookie 1 box red velvet cake mix 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 1/2 cup canola oil 1 tsp vanilla extract Powdered sugar (for rolling the cookies) Heart shaped cookie cutter, (optional)

PREPARATION: Note: you don’t have to cut the cookies into heart shapes.

They can be left round!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or grease lightly.

In a large bowl, combine cake mix and flour. Whisk until clumps disappear. In the bowl, mix together cake mix, flour, eggs, oil and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Take 1 tablespoon of cookie dough and form

into a ball. Roll the ball in powdered sugar until fully coated. Place cookie dough balls on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, or until edges are set and cookies begin to crack.

Let cookies sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes. If desired, cut cookies into heart shapes while they are still warm, using a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

Transfer cookies to a wire cooling rack and cool completely.

Optional: Dust with additional powdered sugar.

Idea of blanket $1 bridge tolls flawed: Critic Surrey mayor repeats call for fair regional tolling on transportation improvements

consistent and fair system of bridge tolls in Metro Vancouver charging no more than $1 at every crossing has been repeatedly suggested by some area mayors, but one transportation observer warns the numbers don’t add up.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts repeated the idea last month, proposing a TransLink referendum question to impose small tolls at all bridges, while reducing the Metro Vancouver gas tax and continuing to limit TransLink property tax increases to three per cent per year.

En garde for fencing Surrey students learn about ancient Olympic sport

Elementary in Surrey had a chance to experience the art of fencing at their school last week.

“Despite its rather foreboding nature,” said teacher and sponsor Philip Wong, “fencing is one of the safer sports.”

That’s as long as participants use all the protective equipment, including stainless steel masks and kevlar jackets.

Wong is aiming to expose his students to the ancient Olympic sport with the idea of starting a club at his school and others throughout the city.

Using equipment donated by the B.C. Fencing Association (fencing.bc.ca), Wong and fellow fencer David Shorey, a Kwantlen Park Secondary grad and current SFU physics student, spent a day demonstrating the sports three disciplines, Sabre, Foil and Epee, each distinguished by body targets and style.

Road pricing could also address complaints that drivers who don’t take toll bridges can still drive for free on most of upgraded Highway 1 or on the new South Fraser Perimeter Road.

Watts did not specify how much money she envisioned drivers potentially paying per day in combined road or bridge tolls, or how far she much she proposes to reduce the TransLink fuel tax, now at 17 cents per litre.

She said she hasn’t seen Johnstone’s analysis and can’t comment on it.

TransLink has estimated it must locally raise $175 to $700 million more each year – on top of assumed senior government contributions – to maintain and significantly expand the system, at an expected cost of $14 to $23 billion over 30 years.

Surrey sweeps Chilliwack, assured of a top-four finish

With a 7-4 road win Saturday against the Chilliwack Chiefs, the Birds punched their ticket to the post-season, being the last team in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland Division to do so.

If they remain the fourth Mainland Division seed, they’ll square off against the first-place Langley Rivermen in the first round, but there is still a chance to overtake the Coquitlam Express for third place. The Express, who’ve lost four straight, are five points up on Surrey, and each team has eight games remaining.

Considering there was considerable turnover on the roster from last year’s BCHL championship team – nearly all the team’s top scorers from that squad are gone, as well as the head coach – making the playoffs is something of an accomplishment for the Surrey-based team.

To compare, after the Eagles’ won a BCHL title in 2005, the next season they won just 16 games and finished second last in the entire league. The year after that, they won just 17 times and again missed the playoffs.

Saturday’s playoff-clinching win came largely as a result of a big second period. With the score tied 1-1 after 20 minutes – Austin Ferguson’s power-play goal got Surrey on the board – Chilliwack took a 2-1 lead 55 seconds into the second, before the Eagles exploded for four straight goals, including another from Ferguson with the man advantage.

Braeden Russell, who had a goal disallowed early in the period, also scored, as did Jonah and Nathan Renouf.

Tardi, a student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, will skip the Fraser Valley under-16 male curling team in Mission, a group that also includes Joshua Derosiers of Aldergrove, Scott Kryski of Langley and Nicholas Umbach of Coquitlam.

Tyler and Umbach were part of the Fraser Valley team which won the gold medal in Vernon two years ago.

The B.C. Winter Games will have participants from across the province competing in 18 sports.

Overtime win for Devils Unbeaten streak stretched to three games

of contention for a playoff position, the North Delta Devils haven’t let up.

The Pacific Junior Hockey League team defeated a conference rival for the second straight game, edging the Delta Ice Hawks 2-1 in double overtime Saturday night at the Sungod Arena.

With three games remaining in their season, North Delta has a 10-28-1-2 (winloss-overtime losstie) record, and are in the basement of the Tom Shaw Conference.

The Devils are now on a three-game undefeated streak, their latest win a 2-1 decision over the Delta Ice Hawks Saturday night at the Sungod Arena.

Although outshot 46-34 by the visitors, North Delta received strong goaltending from Nickolas Trenciansky. The 17 year-old from Surrey, in goal for all three games of the current unbeaten streak, turned aside 45 of 46 shots for his fourth victory of the season.

Connor Fortems was the only Ice Hawks player to put a puck past Trenciansky, doing so with just 64 seconds remaining in the second period to break a scoreless tie.

Dylan McCann, a 16 year-old from Surrey, netted the tying goal six minutes into the second period with an unassisted effort while on the powerplay. Playing in just his fifth game

with the Devils, McCann assisted on the winning goal 1:23 into the second overtime period, setting up former Ice Hawks Kyla Mana for his first goal of the season.

North Delta had an edge in the special teams battle, scoring once on four powerplay chances while killing off five shorthanded situations.
