Resort sparkles in Hallmark spotlight KRISTIN FRONEMAN

atrons clad in plush, white robes and slippers stroll underneath the threetiered crystal chandelier in the lobby at Sparkling Hill Resort. It’s not an unusual sight, considering this is a wellness resort that literally sparkles with thousands upon thousands of Swarovski crystals. However, on this occasion, the robed guests have to navigate around wires connected to bright-as-the-sun strobe lights, gaffers holding electrical equipment and a giant camera. It may seem like the glamorous life at first, until the director calls cut, the lead actress and extras return to their positions, and the scene is filmed over and over again. This is just part of the making of Hallmark Channel’s movie-of-the-week, Mother’s Day Off, which will be shown in the U.S. in May. While some crew members have been staying at a hotel near downtown Vernon, the cast and producers have been at Sparkling Hill all week to enjoy some of the resort’s amenities. Actress Ona Grauer could be seen rejuvenated after experiencing the cold sauna, which dips to temperatures down to 110 below Celsius. (That’s -166 Fahrenheit to our American friends.) “This place just fit the bill,” said producer Ira Pincus, who hails from California

The filming took place all this week at Vernon’s Sparkling Hill Resort. and has worked on a number of TV productions from coast-to-coast in Canada and the U.S. Written by husband and wife team Neal and Tippi Dobrofsky (who wrote Goodnight For Justice, also produced by Pincus, starring Beverly Hills 90210 alumni Luke Perry and Jason Priestley), Mother’s Day Off is about a mother, Laura (played by Bonnie Sommerville), who needs an escape and so goes on a retreat with her former college roommate and best friend, Trish (Grauer). James Tupper (Men in Trees) stars as Laura’s husband Michael. “The original concept was like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but with a mom,” said Pincus. “It’s about what a woman with kids would do if she needs to get away... she’d go to a fancy hotel.” Set in Northern California, it was director Mark Jean who brought Sparkling Hill

to the attention of Pincus and his fellow producer Jonathan Schwartz, of Toronto, and Robert Lee of Vancouver. “His girlfriend showed him a pamphlet of the resort and we were agreed. We like to put beautiful things in our production value before the screen,” said Lee, adding that some of the crew, many from Vancouver, had already heard of Sparkling Hill. “The women know where Sparkling Hill is, and when I tell people it’s near Predator Ridge (Golf Resort), the men know it.” “This has high production value that has been unseen before. It’s not overused. If we were in Vancouver, people would see the sails (of the Pan Pacific Hotel) or Burrard Inlet and recognize it,” added Lee. as a hotel staff member at Thursday’s day of shooting in the resort’s lobby. “We have to bring on locals. It’s exciting for them to come play with us,” said Pincus. “We’ve also used some of the hotel staff who have put our actors through mud treatments and foot baths. We also used extras in the restaurant scene.” Scenes have also been shot in the resort’s spa, with its out-of-this world aroma-therapeutic steam and sauna rooms. “Our cast have been happy and very lucky,” said Pincus. Both Pincus and Lee have been so impressed with Sparkling Hill and its views of Okanagan Lake and the surrounding mountains, as well as the hospitality, they say they would both consider using the area for future film projects. “It’s been great to branch out of Vancouver,” said Lee.

Action team reaches out to hoarders R richard rolke

eality TV is dominated by scenes of hoarding but it’s not entertainment for individuals actually living in those circumstances or those around them. And increasingly, local governments and service agencies are recognizing that hoarding is a psychological condition that can have a widespread community impact. “It’s a mental health issue,” said Annette Sharkey, with Vernon’s Partners in Action. “It’s not as easy as telling someone to clean up.” It’s believed that hoarding affects about two to four per cent of the general population and it can also be associated with depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. It appears to affect more men than women. Neighbours are often the first ones to become aware of a hoarding problem, either because of foul odours emanating from trash, rodents or a growing pile of building materials, gardening supplies, vehicles and other items. But often what the general public can’t see is far worse. “There have been people who have to go outside of their home and go through a window to open a door because there is so much junk inside,” said Clint Kanester, Vernon’s bylaw compliance manager. Beyond posing a health risk, the collection of paper, wood and other items is potential fuel for a fire. And if a blaze breaks out, the volume of material makes it difficult for firefighters

Some cases of hoarding occur in rental properties and often under pressure from neighbours to act, landlords will evict the tenant. That often can lead to homelessness which only heightens a sense of isolation. Recognizing the broad hazards involved with hoarding, a new action response team has been created in Vernon. It consists of Partners in Planning, the

bylaw compliance department, the fire department, emergency social services, the Interior Health Authority, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the John Howard Society and the Ministry of Social Development. “We’re still looking at what the model will look like but we’re looking at how the agencies can work more closely together,” said Sharkey. “We want to connect an individual who

is hoarding with assistance such as counselling.” Kanester believes the action team is the first step towards improved communications. “It will provide us with an opportunity to be aware of a situation another agency is involved in,” he said. At a recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, delegates considered a resolution from Lower Mainland jurisdictions. It called on health authorities to work with local government to address the increasing prevalence of hoarding by allocating appropriate resources and staff and by providing care and support to hoarders to enable them to manage and reduce risks associated with their condition. Sharkey admits that one of the goals of the action team is to change the perception of hoarders within agencies, as well as the public. “There’s no easy fix. You can’t just go in, clean a place up and the person is cured,” she said, adding that there may be deeprooted emotional issues that have led an individual to hoard. “They need ongoing support and preventative measures, such as follow-ups to make sure they haven’t moved back into a dangerous place.” Sharkey is hopeful the action response team will make positive strides towards providing the assistance some residents need in a dignified and compassionate manner. “We really want to have a community approach to this,” she said.

Bylaw compliance officers and community policing volunteers and staff will be on hand to direct traffic on Alexis Park Drive. A temporary crosswalk will also be established in front of the church so people can get across the road. “We want to make sure safety for everyone is key,” said Kanester.

“There isn’t a lot of places to park in that area. The side roads are narrow,” said Kanester. Anyone wanting to attend the service is advised there’s limited seating at the church. As a result, the city is establishing a live video feed of the service at Kal Tire Place and the Schubert Centre. Once the church is nearing seating capacity, vehicles will be directed to Kal Tire Place or the Schubert Centre.

Steps are being taken to try and stimulate the local economy. City of Vernon staff will make a pitch to about 60 foreign investors during the Provincial Nominee Program seminar in Vancouver Tuesday. “The information seminar provides investors with an overview of the PNP along Kevin Poole with an opportunity for economic development officers to provide an overview of their community,” said Kevin Poole, economic develop-

said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. The suspect, 18, from Falkland, broke a couple of windows and made it inside the house. When police arrived, he was found passed out on the kitchen floor.

Provincial exam results and the percentage of students from Kal graduating with honours over the past decade are well above the provincial average. “At Kal, we encourage all students to set high academic goals and to develop plans to turn those goals into realities,” said Balcombe, adding that students are expected to develop a wide variety of skills that will help them in the future. “From creativity and critical thinking to collaboration and perseverance, we challenge our students to engage in courses that push them outside of their comfort zone.” Among the current crop of Grade 12 students is Sarah Letkeman, who is enrolled in the advanced placement calculus course. “It’s a great way of easing into university, regardless of whether I earn a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science,” she said. The longest holiday

t last, the holiday season that began on Halloween will finally come to a close with Super Bowl Sunday. You may say it’s not a holiday because most of us get Sunday off anyway, but la-la-la-la, I can’t hear you, it’s a holiday. After that we in the U.S. must wait two entire weeks, a fortnight, 14 days, before we get another long weekend for Presidents Day. But then you’ll have to wait until Memorial Day to really relax. Unless, like me, you choose to celebrate and honor local and religious holidays by not going to work on Texas Independence Day, Jim Mullen Casimir Pulaski Day, Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, Maryland Day, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Seward’s Day, Pascua Florida Day, Father Damien Day, Maundy Thursday, Patriot’s Day, San Jacinto Day, Oklahoma Day, Arbor Day, several Confederate Memorial Days, Law Day, Rhode Island Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo, Truman Day, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day, Harvey Milk Day and National Maritime Day. Sorry, I had to leave out a few to save a forest. All together, I counted 36 holy days, name days and observance days between Presidents Day and Memorial Day – and that’s not counting the ones that fall on the weekends, like Easter. If you do celebrate Mardi Gras, do you really think you’re going to make it to work on Ash Wednesday? Not if you’re doing it right. But the Super Bowl is different. It’s the one holiday where you can overeat and over-drink and wager on football. Whoops, I forgot: That’s pretty much true for Thanksgiving and New Year’s, too. Or any day they play football. Maybe this year someone will finally come up with a Super Bowl snack that rivals the Turducken of Thanksgiving. Instead of turkey

stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken, they’ll invent the Sauguaco: a sausage stuffed with guacamole stuffed with nachos. But the real difference between the Super Bowl and other holidays is that you’re supposed to show up at work the next day and talk about it. When people ask you if you had a nice Christmas, you could say almost anything and it would work, because after all, whose business is it that you had a fight with your son-in-law and will never see your grandchildren again? Who’s to know if your wife didn’t like the exercise bicycle you bought her? But the Super Bowl, you better have your facts straight. The only excuse for missing work on Super Bowl Monday is that you didn’t watch it – or you watched something else. Or maybe that’s your job, figuring out what to put on TV opposite the Super Bowl. Commercials that sell for a million dollars a minute on the Super Bowl must cost pennies on the other stations. It must be infomercial heaven. Can I hear a “ShamWow!” Most of us are wise enough to use the bathroom during the game and not to go during precious commercials. Someone can always tell you about the plays and the scores, but the commercials have to be seen. I missed one last year and people had to explain to me that I had to buy this brand of beer because the horses that pull the wagons have good memories. If that doesn’t make sense, you haven’t had enough beer. As big as football is in this country, someday soccer may equal or surpass it, and certainly our national heroes will still pass away. Which makes me wonder: How many holidays will there be a hundred years from now? Will every day be a holiday? Will every weekend be three days? Will every weekend need decorations on the outside of the house? But in a hundred years, maybe we’ll celebrate some holidays differently. Like by showing up for work. Reality television has turned the spotlight on hoarders over the years, but often it leads to viewers snickering and rolling their eyes over what they have seen. And that’s unfortunate as hoarding is a very serious mental health condition that impacts two to four per cent of the general population. It’s often compounded on top of depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and feelings of isolation. That’s why a new action response team in Vernon is welcome news. The goal of the multi-agency team is to identify situations of hoarding locally and attempt to minimize the risks, whether it is fire load caused by an excessive amount of material, rodents attracted by rotting food or damage caused to rental housing. But, the most important goal is to extend a compassionate and caring hand to those caught in the endless cycle of hoarding and who feel they have nowhere to turn. Hoarding can lead to evictions and that can force people on to the street. The response team can put these individuals in contact with agencies such as the Interior Health Authority, the Canadian Mental Health Association and the John Howard Society, and hopefully they will embrace services that allow them to move ahead. And there is a history of such efforts working as another response team has reduced the number of homeless camps in the community by making people aware of resources available to them. Let’s hope that this new response effort has just as much success as none of us in the community should turn a blind eye to fellow citizens in need. They deserve our thoughts and prayers and they need to know that they aren’t alone.

Search unit pays tribute to Nicol

ernon Search and Rescue would like to express its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Patrick Nicol. Patrick was a long-time supporter of Vernon Search and Rescue. We take for granted our communication system as it is today, but it was not always so. Vernon Search and Rescue used to carry pocket transistor radios. Our members would tune into CJIB Radio and communicate, by the on-air DJ, messages to our members in the field. Patrick was part of that communication system. Patrick understood the dedication and effort that Vernon Search and Rescue members put in to support our community. He was always so positive and supportive of the volunteers. An example of his support was a donation that he gave to Vernon Search and Rescue to aid us in providing a Christmas banquet for our members and their family to enjoy. As the chairperson of the Regional District of the North Okanagan, Patrick went out of his way to stay in touch with the group, inquiring of our well-being, with the constant offer to support us if needed. He was always so kind and so generous, a true gentleman to the end of his days. Patrick was a close personal friend with many of our members and we all mourn his passing. Members of Vernon Search and Rescue REMEMBERING PATRICK As a citizen of Vernon, I would like to suggest that Patrick Nicol's contributions to this community, from the perspectives of both his business involvement at Kiss FM and community involvement in untold numbers of ways on innumerable occasions affecting every facet of our city's societal environment, are worthy of a greater emphasis and spotlight and more high profile acknowledgement than he ever sought or aspired to in person. With those thoughts in mind, I would respectfully suggest that the "Patrick Nicol Memorial Performing Arts Centre" would be an appropriate recognition of and memorial to Patrick. It seems clear that a corporate logo is not about to be affixed to that high-profile community facility, which in my view fortuitously makes it the ideal medium for such much deserved recognition. Herb Arbuckle WILDLIFE The Morning Star editorial titled, "Officers made the right call with call," states that conservation officers do not have the time or the resources to relocate wildlife that has strayed out of its usual habitat. How ironic. There are budget resources aplenty for the likes of ski-

ers who wantonly disregard safety boundaries and have to be rescued manpower, vehicles, helicopters, etc. However, there are absolutely no resources for an animal that has wandered into a residential area in search of food. Is this not an issue that needs to be reviewed with a solution in mind? As for an assumed contest for territory between two cats in the forest as a result of a new one being deposited by whatever means, I close my eyes. I can see the resident cougar confronting the newly arrived transplant and declaring, "I have weapons of mass destruction which I will use if you don't leave my territory. You can't stay here. All of this land is mine. If you don't leave, I'll have to resort to violence." Really? This is quite a fiction to expect me to believe. M. Harter THE HEAT IS ON Recent comments in this paper from Green Party leader, Elizabeth May, concerning climate change, have raised a storm of protest over our MP’s pretence that he and his “party are committed to greenhouse gas reductions." But what of Mr. Mayes’ assertion that, “in the past 10 years, the climate has actually cooled?" That

fallacy is addressed in the Dec 7 New Scientist magazine. “This past decade has been the hottest since records began,” it says. “However, the average surface temperature seems to have increased more slowly than it did over previous decades." Global warming has not stopped. New Scientist cautions that records for global surface temperature, “do not include the fastest-warming region on Earth, the Arctic, as there are so few observations there. There is every reason to think warming will accelerate greatly over the coming century." It gives three. Heat from the sun varies in an 11 year cycle. “Measurements show it did dip particularly low recently,” but will cycle up again. Sulphur aerosols reflect the sun’s heat back into space. Levels of sulphur dioxide mainly from volcanic eruptions and burning coal have risen in the past decade. More of the sun’s heat has gone to oceans rather than the atmosphere. Water covers 70 per cent of the planet. “A whopping 94 per cent of the heat has ended up in the oceans, with four per cent absorbed by land and ice. All surface warming since 1971 is due to just two per cent of the heat.” A little more heat going to

oceans has a large effect on atmospheric temperature. “During a La Nina, the Pacific soaks up so much heat that it cools the planet’s surface." The opposite happens with El Nino. “There have been lots of La Ninas lately but no major El Nino for the past 15 years." Reduced albedo reflection caused by melting ice draws more heat into the dark Arctic Ocean and tundra. Global warming includes air, land and water. New Scientist concludes that, “the evidence suggests atmospheric warming will accelerate again, and it could do so with a vengeance." Greig Crockett AMALGAMATION Few of us would comprehend the intricacies of amalgamation, so it is difficult to have an educated opinion. Local votes initiated by special interest groups are determined by voter apathy. It would be interesting to hear amalgamation opponents' opinions if the question had been "who is opposed to," with a 25 per cent result. Should we then amalgamate? Perhaps both questions need to be asked at the same time to get a more representative view. Dave Tompson

Society sets out trail plans RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff

Trail enthusiasts continue to push their case for an expanded network. The Ribbons of Green Trail Society has asked the City of Vernon to incorporate its recent update of local trail plans into long-range planning documents. “This is a large, planned system of trails,” said Victor Cumming, society director. “This is about recreation and economic development.” The society, which also recently presented to the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee, has suggested a number of trail projects for the short, medium and long-term in Greater Vernon. Among the major trails it would like completed are Kin Beach to Paddlewheel Park, Kal Beach to Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and Swan Lake to Goose Lake. Among new routes being proposed are lower and upper BX Creek, Bella Vista Road to Tronson Road, Rose’s Pond in the Commonage to Kekuli Bay Provincial Park and Coldstream Creek. A society goal is to see a network connecting downtown Vernon to Okanagan, Swan and Kalamalka lakes. There is also support for a corridor from Vernon to Oyama. When Ribbons of Green began 20 years ago, there were three trails and now there are 35 to 40, with another 18 in various stages of planning. Cumming says that progress has occurred because of broad community involvement. “It’s supported by all of the municipalities and key community groups, and particularly Kalamalka Rotary,” he said.

Vernon teachers insists classroom conditions need to improve. Teachers are praising the ruling by the B.C. Supreme Court reaffirming that provincial legislation limiting bargaining rights is unconstitutional. The decision ruling restores collective agreement provisions stripped in 2002 and orders the province to pay $2 million in damages plus court costs. “We are thrilled,” said Heather Malcolm. Vernon Malcolm Teachers’ Association president. “We have been fighting for 12 years for better learning conditions for our students and it is really gratifying to see that it was worth it. A whole generation has been affected in the last 12 years.” The province’s actions removed class-size limits and class composition guarantees. “Children who were in kindergarten when those bills were passed are now in Grade 12 and have spent their entire school careers in larger classes with fewer resources,” said Malcolm. “The support of parents and the hard work of teachers, who are doing more with less, have been holding the system together.” The legislation removed provisions that guaranteed smaller classes, support for students with special needs and services from teacher-librarians, counsellors and other specialists. Malcolm says the government then cut hundreds

of millions of dollars a year from public education budgets, forcing school boards to cut programs and close schools. “More than 3,500 teaching positions including 1,500 specialist teachers, were also cut provincially,” she said. In Vernon, the VTA says, restoring class size and support language to 2002 levels would see kindergarten classes reduced to 20 students, primary classes reduced to 22 students, intermediate split grade classes reduced to 28 students and most secondary classes also reduced to 28. “The right thing to do is restore our smaller classes, rehire our specialist teachers, rather than wasting more taxpayers money on a meaningless and costly appeal,” said Malcolm.

Given it was Faith Night Friday at Kal Tire Place, the Trail Smoke Eaters really didn’t have a prayer against the Vernon Vipers. With 10 local churches supporting their boys, Austin Smith registered 31 saves as the Vipers shut down the last-place Smokies 5-0 in B.C. Hockey League action before 2,156 fans. Down to just nine forwards and five defencemen due to injuries, the gritty Smokies played the Vipers tough through a scoreless opening period. Liam Coughlin jumpstarted the offence at 7:56 of the second session with his 14th of the season, burying a Dexter Dancs’ feed in front. Demico Hannoun pulled off a few toe drags for his 14th three minutes later, after taking a pass from d-man Jared Wilson. Thanks to Smith, that was all the Vipers really needed but the ever-improving Logan Mick made it 3-0 with a sweet backhand on a two-on-one with Coughlin, with six minutes left in the game. Smith took the crease after starter Danny

Todosychuk was injured after being run over by Brandon Volpe at 5:47 of the first period. Brendan Persley won a clear decision over Volpe two minutes earlier, stepping in quickly for d-man Josh Bryan, who first challenged Volpe. Smith recorded bang-bang saves in the second period off Joel Webb and Greyson Reitmeier with the Vipers two men short. Thunder, the Broncos’ prize Arabian gelding mascot who will lead the team onto the field, arrived safely in New York on a Fedex cargo plane. Just two sidebar stories floating around as the world gets ready for the 3:27 p.m. showdown between the Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. An online newspaper poll asks fans if they will show up for work Monday if the Seahawks win. A total of 359 fans, as of noon Friday, claimed they would be at work, while 232 said no way. For the record, the winner’s share is $88,000 a player. The losers take home $44,000 apiece. Some 20 years ago, the jackpot was $36G for the winners and Kevin Mitchell $18G for the losers. In Super Bowl I, the champs collected $15,000 and the losers pocketed $7,500. And while the NFL is a billion-dollar industry, commissioner Roger Goodell has noted ticket sales are down over the last five years due to high def television. Then there’s Derrick Coleman of the Seahawks, a fullback who wears hearing aids. He invited twins Riley and Erin Kovalcik to the Super Bowl on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America.’ Riley, who is also hearing impaired, had written Coleman a letter after the Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49s in the NFC championship. Those girls have found a friend for life. And in case you don’t want to watch nine hours of pregame football hype, turn on NBC for some matinee NHL action featuring Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals against the Red Wings. Enjoy the Super Bowl. The UBC Okanagan Heat were unable to trip up the Bisons Friday night, as Manitoba earned an important straight set 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21) victory in CIS women’s volleyball at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. Manitoba takes sole possession of fourth place in the Canada West conference at 12-7, while the Heat now sit fifth at 11-8. Although both teams will likely face each other in the first round of the Canada West playoffs, the fourth seed will earn the right to host – a privilege the Heat would love to have. The Bisons have never won in Kelowna, and the Heat would love to avoid the almost 2,000 kilometre journey back to Winnipeg. The Heat struggled with first touch for the majority of the match. Rookie Kienan Scott scored twice, including the winner with 20 seconds left, as the host Summerland Steam shaded the North Okanagan Knights 6-5 Friday night. Scott, a 17-year-old Penticton product, became the first Steam player to reach the 30-goal plateau as Summerland improved to 26-14-1-3 in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Knights held period leads of 3-1 and 4-3, getting goals from Logan Geefs (7th), Tanner Burns (10th), Austin Garrington (3rd) Logan Mostat (8th) and Ryley Booth (4th). Michael Rouault pocketed 27 points and 15 rebounds as the Fulton Maroons iced the Sa-Hali Sabres 74-71 in double overtime Friday night in Kamloops. Fulton played Westsyde Whundas in Saturday’s final of the Sabres Invitational Basketball Classic. Tye Kitzman flushed 15 points and Riley Beauchamp drained 10 for the senior Maroons. Kitzman canned 24 points, while Rouault earned 19 points and 15 boards as Fulton opened with a 74-51 icing of the Valleyview Vikings. Cory AngHamilton recorded 10 points and seven assists. Meanwhile, the Charles Bloom Timberwolves fell 64-54 to the Barriere Cougars and then buried the Revelstoke Avalanche 58-47 at their home tournament in Lumby. Bloom went down 11-1 early in front of a packed gym against Barriere, uncharacteristically missing some open looks, and then struggled to put things together offensively the rest of the way. “We had a good run in the second quarter,” said Bloom coach Nathan Lee. “We led going into the half, but in the second half we were way too impatient and gave the other guys way too many opportunities to score. Full credit to Barriere — they were physical and played hard.” Bloom scoring was headed up by Peter Ufimzeff with 13 points. Player of the Game Tommy Dyck dropped 10 points and pulled down eight boards. The T-Wolves grabbed an early 12-3 lead and never looked back against Revelstoke. “The boys responded better,” said Lee. “Our scoring was very balanced with nine of our 10 players hitting the scoresheet. We were more active

defensively, and we were able to execute better offensively. We aren’t where we need to be but we are getting there and I’m proud of how hard the boys are playing as a team.” Ufimzeff collected 18 points and a dozen assists, while Player of the Game Mathew Grahn dropped 13 points. In the Kalamalka Lakers Rock The Rim, Chris Gallant dialed up 17 points as Kal stuffed the D.W. Poppy Red Hawks of Langley 71-39. Tye Oddy fired 14 points for the Lakers, while Jamie Pruckl supplied eight points, seven assists and four steals. Nick Stanhope had nine rebounds. “Kalamalka played very controlled while keeping the intensity up which caused a lot of turnovers in their favour,” said Kal assistant coach Justin Vanderham. “Crisp passing broke down D.W. Poppy’s zone defence, and after taking a 30-14 lead at half-time, the Lakers didn’t look back.” In the VSS Panthers tourney, the Cats grounded the Okanagan Mission Huskies 78-56 behind 23 points and a dozen boards from Shelby Hartwig. Dynamic defensive efforts from Mitchell Pepper, Liam Paulsen and Zach Kronbauer was the key to the first-half dominance by the Cats. South’s auction -- a takeout double followed by a minimum no-trump bid -- showed a good 18 to 20 points. North

bid three no-trump because he counted an extra point for his five-card suit and expected his partner to be able to place the missing high cards based on the bidding. South starts with only four top tricks: one spade, two hearts and one club. He can get two diamond and four club winners, but he will presumably have to lose the lead twice because East needs the club king for his opening bid. Declarer must let East win the first trick. This sacrifices one spade trick, but gains nine in the long run. South takes the third spade, plays a club to dummy’s ace (the king might drop singleton), and concedes a club. Here, East has no riposte.

If declarer takes trick one, then when East gets in with, say, the club king, he returns the spade six (higher of two remaining cards) and West plays his three to keep communication with his partner. Then the contract fails, the defenders taking three spades, one diamond and one club.

Say goodbye to expensive trendy products and say hello to these easy-to-follow steps that will keep both your health and your budget in check. Plan ahead. Making a grocery list will keep you focused on what you need and minimize unnecessary purchases. Grocery stores are set up to trigger you to impulse buy, so it is valuable to identify what you need before you enter the store. A deal isn’t a deal if you don’t need what you buy! It is important to recognize prices will vary from store to store. Monitor the different stores in your area and select the place that has the best prices for most of the items

Saving leftovers doesn’t mean you need to eat the same meal twice — dinner from the previous night can be an excellent filling in a wrap or topping on a salad. Buy fruits and vegetables when in season. Buying fruits and vegetables when in season is a great way to boost your nutrient intake

and slash your grocery bill. For example, a bunch of carrots from your local farmer may be cheaper than a bag of baby carrots that have been pre-chopped, packaged and imported from another country. If your favourite foods only grow during certain seasons, try buying in bulk, and freezing them so you have them on hand year-round. Adding seasonal vegetables that you may be unfamiliar with to a recipe may increase the flavour and decrease the price. For example, try using julienne turnip or rutabaga strips in coleslaw. Choose protein alternatives Sources of protein are often the most expensive component when it comes to meal planning. Seeking out affordable alternatives such as beans and canned fish can satisfy both your appetite and wallet.

Along with other important nutrients, beans are packed with the same hunger-fighting, muscle-building protein as your favorite meats. Soaking and cooking dry beans is your cheapest option, but canned beans are a suitable choice, especially if time and convenience are a concern. Canned tuna, salmon and sardines are also excellent alternatives These varieties last longer on your shelf than fresh fish, and come with a lower price tag. Kettle campaign nets $400,000 Morning Star Staff

The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas kettle campaign was another success. The campaign raised a total of $400,000. “That number helped us provide 778 Christmas hampers and will provide year-round support to families in need,” said David MacBain, community ministries director. Besides financial donations, the campaign received a boost from volunteers who range kettle bells, collected David MacBain and sorted canned food and provided rides to clients with their Christmas hampers. “To share the wonderful experience of giving warmed our hearts and help us in meeting the needs of many within our community,” said MacBain. However, 2013 also presented some unexpected challenges for the Salvation Army food bank. “We were faced with having to replace our mechanically unsound cube van and the need to purchase a forklift for expanding day-to-day operations,” said MacBain. “If a company, organization, club or individual would be willing to consider sponsoring the purchase of the $33,000 2010 cube van we were able to acquire, or the $4,500 1980 forklift we picked up, it would go a long way in helping us meet the anticipated operational costs for 2014.” For more information, call 250-250-549-4111.
