It was a special weekend just past for music aficionados, as the acclaimed Sultans of String joined the Symphony of the Kootenays for two concerts, Saturday and Sunday. The first show featured the Sultans’ “Symphony show, and almost 500 turned out to hear it. Sunday featured founding member Chris McKhool’s Fiddle Fire, aimed at children and families. All and all, a trip around the globe with the Sultans’ world beat sensibilities. The event was the Symphony’s third concert of the 2013/14 season. HSBC has given notice to at least two Cranbrook non-profits that they should find new banks. In a letter to the CUPW Local 728 signed by HSBC’s head of business banking

Nigel Davis, the bank said that upon conducting a “strategic review” of personal banking services, it would be closing the accounts. “As a result of the review, we have made the difficult decision to end our banking relation-

ship with your business,” Davis wrote. The letter is dated as January 6, 2014 and notes that on March 14, all business accounts associated with CUPW 728 would be closed.

Teck confirms spill into Columbia River CANADIAN PRESS

TRAIL, B.C. — Teck Resources is confirming that its smelter in Trail has spilled up to 25,000 litres of a chemical solution into the Columbia River. Spokesman Richard Deane says the solution likely contained sodium hydroxide which the

plant uses to de-mineralize feed water for the smelter’s boilers. Sodium hydroxide is in an industrial cleaning agent also known as lye or caustic soda and can cause severe skin burns and eye damage. Deane could not say if a harmful amount of

the chemical was drained into the river. Deane says the solution was accidentally drained to a domestic sewage plant leading to the river instead of getting treated. B.C.-based Teck Resources is facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States on al-

legations unrelated to this spill that its smelter in Trail has polluted the Columbia River. A woman from Washington State says pollutants released into the water as recently as March 2011 are to blame for her breast cancer and other health problems.
