Winter Games depend on volunteers of all ages
T
he BC Winter Games are a major undertaking that can only happen if thousands of community members stand behind them, supporting the 1,344 young athletes as they compete in 18 different sports. Approximately 1,500 volunteers have registered to help out so far, and Mission Games president Brian Antonson says that at least another 500 are needed. “We got a big push now to get lastminute people in.” The Games run Feb. 20-23 at various venues across the Fraser Valley, including Hemlock Resort. Opening and closing ceremonies are at Mission Raceway Park. Most athletes are aged nine to 17. A volunteer could be someone who has three hours to spare on a Friday afternoon, or someone who is free for whole days in a row. “We welcome all people. If you have one day, or one shift, or can be there all BC Winter Games president Brian Antonson said about 1,500 people have registered to volunteer for the Feb. 20-23 event, but more are needed.

Tax Help Offered Do you need help with your taxes? Mission Community Services Seniors Connection is once again offering its tax clinics for seniors starting on March 1. They offer income tax preparation for seniors and those with low income through its Seniors Connection office. Taxes are done by donation and prepared by qualified volunteers. One is drivers of courtesy cars. Also, dorm hosts on sixhour long shifts are needed to keep watch over the participants’ living quarters. “It’s very controlled, very secure,” said Antonson. There is also a need in food services, everything from cleaning tables to food preparation. Food safe training is required for prep. Finally, volunteers are needed for marshalling and hosting services to guide people in and out of the ceremony, and be available
to help with whatever tasks come up during the event itself. “We need people to work in all those kinds of things … just to be there and experience part of the aura of the Games, the spirit of the games. Standing in a parking lot and showing somebody where the last two parking spaces are is not necessarily romantic, but it’s part of the team that makes the whole thing work,” he said. Antonson, a volunteer himself in his role as president of the Games just three years after retirement, is a firm believer in staying active through volunteering. “I think that there is so
much out there to do, that anybody who says, ‘I don’t know what to do,’ is not trying. All you have to do is look at the clubs and groups and associations and things that need help,” he said. “I haven’t had time yet to be bored, because I have had a lot of things to do.” To people who say they lack special talents, Antonson replies: “Well, can you lift things? Can you write things? Can you give an opinion? What did you used to do? What are the talents you can transfer laterally to doing something today? ew Year’s resolutions and the end of the holiday season mark a time of renewed focus on health for many individuals. However, sometimes in our focus on nutrition, physical activity and smoking behaviours, we can forget that where we work, live and play also influence our health. My Health My Community also provides an opportunity for Mission residents to help improve the health of our community by identifying what health supports are needed in our neighbourhoods. A joint project of Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health and UBC, a survey asks questions ranging from whether or not we have safe places to walk and play, to how easy it is to access fruits and vegetables in our neighbourhood, to whether we feel a sense of connectedness or belonging. The District of Mission has also been working with Fraser Health to promote the survey through linking the survey on
its website. The municipality’s support has been crucial. At this time individuals and organizations are asked to also spread the word and to consider including field surveyors in their public events. They can bring paper copies of the survey in English, Punjabi and Mandarin for those who prefer this option or who may require some assistance. This New Year’s, we hope Mission residents will resolve to not only improve their own individual health, but also the health of their community. Anyone who completes the survey has 10 chances to win an iPad. The survey and more information can be found at www. myhealthmycommunity.org. The B.C. Pensioners’ and Seniors’ Organization promotes all matters pertaining to the welfare of the elder citizens of B.C. It presents resolutions to various levels of government and its agencies on issues that have been voted on and passed by members at the annual convention. The B.C. Pensioners’ and Seniors’ Organization is concerned with all aspects of seniors’ lives, including pensions, taxation, finances, health issues, home support, medicare and Pharmacare, housing and rental issues, social safety, abuse, neglect, fair treatment and loneliness. At the annual conventions, members discuss and vote on the resolutions submitted by branches throughout B.C. They also elect members of the provincial board at these conventions. In May 1946, Mission OAPO, Branch #28 obtained its Charter. In August 1946, the first milestone for Branch #28 was to work with other OAPO groups and the western provincial governments to get an increase in pensions, which had started at $20 in 1927 and was still only at $30. Within a year, after much hard work by many people, it had risen to $75. In 1956, the OAPO Branch #28 helped to get Pleasantview started and in 1957 hosted its first OAPO convention. We, the BCOAPO, are affiliated with COSCO (Council of Senior Citizens Organization).

Meet ... Brian Antonson “I admit to being a Pollyanna. I always look for the best in people.” Brian Antonson
INTRODUCTION Although Brian has technically left the work force, he may be as busy now as he ever was. The retired radio broadcaster and BCIT instructor has taken the helm of the 2014 BC Winter Games in his hometown of Mission, a volunteer position that has him coordinating more than 2,000 other volunteers, as well as the minute logistics of getting the large event off the ground. Brian and wife Sue have lived in Mission for 40 years. They have a son and a daughter, two grandchildren, and a dog named Sassy.
VOLUNTEER At 65 years old, Brian has become entrenched in Mission through his decades of community involvement. Apart from his current presidency of the 2014 BC Winter Games, Brian is a past chair of Community Futures in Mission. He has also been deeply involved in protecting Mission’s heritage, and was part of the crew that saved Heritage Park from development. He remains a board member with the Mission Heritage Association. Alongside his brother, Brian has written a book, entitled Slumach’s Gold: In Search of a Legend, about a lost Canadian gold mine with gold nuggets “the size of walnuts.”
KEEPING ACTIVE The self-professed eternal optimist hasn’t yet had time to be bored during retirement. The Games keep him busy, and when they’re over, he is sure to find the next project around the corner.

hartwell Carrington House Retirement Residence is providing quality homes for seniors in Mission. “Live life the way you always have, only better,” is the motto for Carrington House, located on Sixth and Seventh Avenues in Mission.
