The B.C. government is considering an appeal of a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that rejects legislation restricting teacher bargaining and assesses a penalty of $2 million plus court costs. “It doesn’t reflect government’s view of the case and the facts in the case,” Premier Christy Clark told a Kamloops radio station Tuesday. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said he is “disappointed” by the ruling, and ministry
staff will study it before deciding on a possible appeal. Fassbender said he disagrees with the judge’s conclusion that the government tried to provoke a strike by reintroducing provisions that had been struck down by the same judge. “What we need to do is to review the judge’s ruling in detail to see what the implications are, but clearly my message to school districts, to parents, is it’s busisee Teacher page 3

Supreme Court ruling rejected the provincial government’s effort to keep class size and special needs support off the bargaining table with teachers, and ordered the government to pay $2 million in damages to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. In a ruling released Monday, Justice Susan Griffin said the B.C. government’s replacement legislation, passed in 2011, is as unconstitutional as the 2002 law called Bill 28 that removed class size and special needs support from union working conditions. “The court concluded that the government did

The Devil is in the Details
Over the last few months I have been asked many times about the study published last year that found multivitamins to be a waste of time and money. It received an enormous amount of popular press spurring many articles like the one written by Dr. Offit in the New York Times titled "Don't Take Your Vitamins." This story is no exception to the saying that the devil is in the details. Let's start with the study itself and the fine print that was ignored by most of the headlines. First, the study used people who had healthy nutrition, had no deficiencies, were not pregnant and weren't tested for qualityof-life factors like eyesight. Also in the fine print was the fact that vitamin-mineral supplementation reduced non-prostate cancers in men over 50 by 8%, reduced nonprostate cancers for men over 70 by 18% and the 11% reduction in cardiovascular events. Also omitted in all the editorials were the many studies that show the benefit of a multi-vitamin. In 2012 a large study in the Journal of the American Medical Association following 14000 doctors over 12 years found that those doctors who took a multi had a significant reduction in cancer over
those who took a placebo. A 2010 study following 31000 women aged 49-83 for 5 years found women without a history of cardiovascular disease had a 40% reduced risk in heart disease if they took a multivitamin. Dr Offit claims that eating a healthy diet negates the need for supplementation which conflicts with a large body of published scientific literature. As an example, in 2005 the USDA issued a report analyzing the nutrient intake from food alone in the US. The report found that 93% of Americans have inadequate intake of vitamin E, 56% inadequate magnesium, 44% get inadequate vitamin A and the list goes on. For those of you who have tasted a freshly picked tomato right out of the garden there would likely be no argument that fresh, local food is significantly different commercial. Commercially grown foods are not as nutrient dense as the local, fresh alternative. Over time, this reduction in nutrient density, particularly if your diet is not excellent to begin with, results in low grade nutrient deficiency and increased health risk. The body of evidence supports the daily use of a high quality multivitamin.

clear and emotionally driven journey into this timeless classic. “Bengt Jörgen crafts a jewelbox Romeo & Juliet” says Paula Citron (Globe and Mail) and Michael Crabb (National Posts) calls it “a production that looks like a ballet but feels like a play”. Ballet Jorgen will be bringing an ensemble of 15 dancers with Hiroto Saito and Saniya Abilmajineva cast in the roles of Romeo and Juliet. Hiroto Saito is a Japanese born ballet dancer who has been dancing and teaching with Ballet Jorgen since 2007. Along with dancing, Hiroto has choreographed a variety of works for Ballet Jorgen and organized “Dance for Japan” a fundraiser to support earthquake relief in Fukushima, Japan. Saniya Abilmajineva is originally from Tashkent, Uzbekistan and started training for ballet at the age of 10. A graduate from the Choreography College in Moscow, she has been the recipient of several awards including the gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Berlin and a semi-finalist at the International Ballet Competition at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. In addition Ballet Jorgen will be providing 6-10 to local dancers and 2 theatre students the opportunity to participate in the ballet. Students are selected based on their instructor’s recommendation or through live auditions. Students successfully selected will have the rare opportunity to gain insights to the inner workings of a professional ballet production. They will have the chance to participate in rehearsals and perform as villagers, ballroom guests and guards in front of a live audience at the Key City Theatre. Ballet Jorgen will be in Cranbrook on February 11th to perform Romeo & Juliet. Snow clearing operations are now underway in the City of Cranbrook, thanks to a return of winter weather. During and following major snowfalls, City snow removal operation runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and operates with a small fleet of vehicles; four salt/sand trucks with belly plows, two graders and two loaders. With this schedule and the equipment we have, it is reasonable to expect most areas of the City to be cleared within 3 or 4 days of a snowfall, depending on the amount of snow and how fast it comes down. Residents are encouraged to review the City’s Snow and Ice Removal policy <http://cranbrook. ca/our-city/city-departments/public-works/ snow-removal-information> to understand how and why the City clears its snow the way it does. Clearing snow is not just the responsibility of the City Public Works department, which does the best they can with the resources available to keep the community moving during the winter months. Responsibility also lies with each resident and business owner to help clear around their home or business. “Regularly clearing ice and snow from your sidewalks and driveways will allow much easier access to your property by the fire department, RCMP or paramedics should an accident or other emergencies happen.” says Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services Chief Wayne Price. Residents are also encouraged to avoid pushing or blowing snow from their sidewalks, driveways back into the street, after the City plows have been by.

It just gets better for local artist after BC Wildlife Federation honour

Winter’s Wolf, an acrylic and coloured pencil piece by Guy Hobbs. By Lorne Eckersley Only weeks after being artist of the year by the
BC Wildlife Federation, Creston Valley’s Guy Hobbs has been added to the Ducks Unlimited
Canada’s roster of artists. Hobbs’ picture, Winter’s Wolf, was one
of 15 artworks selected from more than 3,000 entries that will now be made into limited edi-
tion prints to raise funds DUC habitat conservation projects, research, education programs and public policy works. “I’m very proud to be associated with Ducks Unlimited and to be able to support the great work they do,” Hobbs, a Lister resident, said after learning the news. “I was approached by them last year and asked to submit some of my work, but was very surprised to be selected, particularly given the huge number of entries they had this year. I sincerely wish them the very best with this years fundraising efforts and hope Winter’s Wolf will be productive for them.” Each year, hundreds of artists submit pieces on various subjects, including wildlife and landscapes, hoping to be included in DUC’s National Art Portfolio (NAP). “Winter’s Wolf is a piece that means quite a bit to me as it is the
first piece of wildlife art I’ve produced that I was truly and completely happy with,” Hobbs said. “It’s based on reference photos of McKinley, the alpha male of the West Yellowstone Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Centre’s high country wolf pack. He is a very large wolf with unusual dark chocolate colouring, and the pictures were taken just after a rain shower. I particularly liked the ‘clumped’ texture this gave his fur and the expression on his face really seemed to sum up his feelings about the weather. “Seeing my work gaining national exposure and being displayed alongside pieces by artists such as Robert Bateman and Peter Steuart has been a huge confidence booster. My work has evolved a great deal in the last few years and I’m excited to see what the future brings.” Winter’s Wolf is fea-
tured in the 2014 DUC calendar and limited edition prints will be used in various fundraising efforts throughout the year. “We are extremely impressed at the caliber of talent the NAP attracts and we’re honoured to feature such an outstanding group of artists again this year,” said Scott Baker, national manager of retail programs for DUC. “Our new uncategorized art category is giving all artists — no matter what subjects they paint — the opportunity to be showcased, which in turn will attract new audiences to both the program and DUC. Each and every contributing NAP artist helps our organization grow year after year and their exceptional creativity furthers our efforts to protect marshes and ponds across Canada.”

In order for these signs and signals to work, they first need to be seen then obeyed. Please be aware of and respect all traffic signage and signals when driving all year. Make sure our streets are safe for everyone! A Message from the Cranbrook RCMP and the City of Cranbrook.

Home Improvement and Renovations Renovate while keeping a future sale in mind
Most homeowners know that the secret to selling a home quickly and at a good price is to ensure that potential buyers fall in love with the property at first sight. However, before undertaking any renovations with the aim of selling your home, take the time to think about how much you want to spend, carefully decide which aspects of your home need improvement, and draw up a list of priorities. According to the experts, a first positive impression is created within one minute, or even less. Consequently doors and windows should be in good repair. The outside entrance should
be pleasing to the eye, the mailbox and any light fixtures properly installed, and the yard well maintained. The inside of the home should look clean and uncluttered. To im prove your chances of pleasing the majority of prospective buyers, walls should be painted in neutral colours, such as beige, pale grey, or ivory. Lots of welcoming light is also a must, so don’t hesitate to replace shabby looking light fixtures. This sort of inexpensive improvement can make a real difference in a potential buyer’s perception. Floor coverings also have an im pact. Obviously, changing

be avoided unless they are reasonably new and in very good condition. Wood, good quality floating floors, or tiling are preferable and are avai lable at reasonable prices. Lastly, if it’s not possible to completely remodel the kitchen
or the bathroom, you could simply make a few small improvements: change the cabinet handles or knobs and give them a fresh coat of paint; replace broken tiles; de-clutter; and add a few up-todate decorative elements.

dows offer the advantage of being very simple to use as well as being inexpensive. Some peo ple prefer sash windows that give a more classic look. It is also possible to opt for customized widows for more specific needs or unique designs. But the options don’t stop there. New technologies now offer possibilities far beyond a bit of glass surrounded by a frame. These days you can find glass specially designed to allow sun rays to remove dirt and traces of rain. These windows stay clean at all times, with very little effort involved. There are also different energy performance ratings. Depending on the zone and the climate where you live, you can opt for windows that have a higher thermal capacity, which can limit temperature fluctuations indoors. Lastly, for special projects, it may be necessary to choose resistant or soundproof glass. These days, there is a window to meet any criteria. Specialists in this field can give you more ideas, advice, and estimates for the type of window you require.

One bad Durango in a good way The 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat. This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beautiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment. Looks I can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. Because of standard AWD and other packaging changes, the starting price is higher than direct competitors, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder. Both those vehicles have a base model that starts around $30,000, the Durango, in contrast, starts at $39,995 and tops out at $51,995. This Citadel model, with options, is over $60,000. The base model comes nicely equipped with 18-inch wheels, keyless entry and

Handling point for the Durango is the amount of space it offers over three rows for 6 or 7 passengers. My youngest son loved climbing into the third row and could actually stretch out. I even tried it out and can report that adults have plenty of room in any seat. The Citadel model came equipped with a stunning two-tone interior featuring black carpets and tan seats. This contrast won over my wife who wouldn’t have looked twice at a Durango but after the first week she admitted how much she enjoyed the experience. If you

Verdict This latest Durango is yet another example of what Chrysler is doing right. It is loaded with the latest technology, has a class leading 8-speed automatic, attitude and room to spare. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be coming to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better. The Toyota Sienna has evolved and adapted to a changing market continuously since its introduction in 1998. Looks:
The Sienna van has a very familiar front end. Look no further than the Toyota Venza where it not only shares the same face but also the same platform. In fact, this platform is used in the Highlander, RAV4, and Camry. This new look is attracting buyers that in the past would not see themselves driving a minivan. When I drove it, I felt as if I was driving a crossover, lots of room and power. I like the LED taillights, very bright and easy to see. The optional power sliding doors have retractable windows and are larger making it easier for getting in and out. They are controlled by a push of a button on the key fob. In The Cab:
There is plenty of leg room for the driver and front passenger. Unlike previous Sienna vans where the driver’s seat would only go back so far and taller people ended up with their knees up around the steering wheel. This version has full adjustability with a longer and wider seat cushion that can make drivers of any size comfortable. The second row has captain’s chairs that

I had the opportunity to drive this vehicle out to Abbotsford a few times and I was impressed with the handling. Most minivans tend to have a lot of body motion and this one did not. Classic car TV stars when the Big Three ruled TV a Plymouth Fury convertible. 5. “Bewitched”: For most of its run, “Bewitched” was proudly pro-Chevy, with tons
of Camaros, Caprices and even Corvairs appearing over the show’s long run. But the guy with the wife who could
twitch her nose and conjure up any car he wanted rarely had the coolest ride on the show. Nope, it was Darrin Stephens’
boss, Larry Tate, who often showed up in a new Corvette convertible.

Viewed through the lens of the passage of 40 or 50 years, our favorite classic TV shows seem to have been full of great classic cars. Of course, they were all just new cars then and their presence on our favorite shows was no accident. It was the dawn of the product-placement era, and cars were by far the choicest products to embed in shows like “Green Acres” and “Bewitched.” In those days, the Big Three got near-exclusive sponsorships on the shows plus a credit at the end. Here are some favorite shows and the brand of cars they featured: 1. “The Rockford Files”: One of the last great private-
eye shows, former big-screen star James Garner played slick Jim Rockford to perfection. And while Rockford almost never used a gun, he did use a gold Pontiac Firebird on a regular basis. Frequent continuity errors meant that Rockford could be seen driving several different years of mid-’70s Firebirds in one scene. 2. “Green Acres”: One of the trio of CBS’s hit “rural shows,” along with “Petticoat Junction” and “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Green Acres” was a Ford show, and the cars that received most of the screen time were a series of 1965-67 Lincoln Continental convertibles driven by cranky Oliver Douglas (played by Eddie Albert). Oliver’s Continentals get our vote as the most stylish

and elegant star cars on classic television. 3. “Charlie’s Angels”: Every adolescent boy’s favorite show was also a Ford show for most of its run. Two of the Angels drove a Mustang II — Farrah Fawcett’s character, Jill, drove what passed for a Cobra in those days — and ironically, the brainy Angel, Sabrina, actually drove a Pinto.

comparatively rare Mopar show —The Chrysler Corporation supplied the vehicles. The snobby Drysdales, a wealthy banking family, could usually be seen in a top-of-theline Imperial, and Milburn Drysdale’s long-suffering assistant, Jane Hathaway, usually drove a Dodge Coronet or
