REALIZED Red Deer’s Danielle Wotherspoon-Gregg prepares for showdown in Sochi
Photo by Advocate news services BY DANNY RODE ADVOCATE STAFF Danielle Wotherspoon-Gregg never dreamed of competing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. In fact, she didn’t believe she would still be a member of the Canadian speed skating long track team at this point in her life. “My goal was to skate in the 2010 Games in Vancouver and I didn’t see myself skating beyond that, I certainly didn’t see myself skating in 2014,” said the Red Deer-raised skater. “But there was a coach (Michael Crowe) I wanted to train with and after 2010 they put me with him, which changed my mind about retiring. I decided to see what would happen and take it one year at a time. The last four years have been day-to-day and season-to-season.” Crowe was her brother Jeremy’s former coach. “He coached Jeremy when he set the (500-metre) world record,” she explained. Wotherspoon-Gregg’s patience and desire to continue to improve paid off when she was named to the Canadian team for the 2014 Games. “It was a long wait to get to the Olympics for sure, and something I’m really looking forward to,” said Wotherspoon-Gregg prior to leaving for Germany last week and then on to Russia. The 33-year-old, who grew up competing for the Red Deer Central Lions Speed Skating Club, will compete in the 500 metres and perhaps the 1,000 metres. “I believe I’m the first alternate for the 1,000,

‘I know I can still improve, but I’m fighting against overuse of my body and with injuries. My body is telling me it’s time.’ but I don’t plan on competing. I’ll prepare just in case something happens, but I want everyone to be healthy.” She first moved to Calgary in 1998 to train with the national program and competed in her first World Cup in 2003. She was on the road to the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, when she ran into a roadblock. “I was training at high altitude camps and got sick.” She took almost 18 months off before returning. “I needed to be healthy and also to see if I wanted to keep skating, although even when I left I knew I wasn’t done and hadn’t reached my potential. ... I just needed the time off.” She set a goal to compete in the Vancouver Games, but once again bad luck surfaced when she tore her hip flexor early in the season. “I was off three months and didn’t return until just before the Olympic trials and wasn’t at my best.
It’s a hazard of the game.” Since returning, from her forced break, she’s consistently been in the top four rankings in the 500 in Canada. Last year, she was third and this year fourth. “This year, Christine Hesbitt has been consistently on top while the next three skaters have been up and down,” she said. “At the end, I was fourth at the Olympic trials and thankfully they take four.” Wotherspoon-Gregg’s placing may be even more impressive considering she was working two jobs, working on a degree and training at the same time for most of the last four years. “But this year she received more financial help from the government, which allowed her to not work as many hours, plus she graduated. “It took a few extra things off my plate, which helped a lot,” she said.
