ODIE LOWE A LEGEND IN VERNON Odie coached the Canadians in the 1961-62 season and later coached the B.C. Junior Hockey League Vernon Essos for four seasons, leading them to the league title in 1971. Said former Esso forward Eddie Johnstone: “Halfway through my second season with the Essos, I gotta call from Medicine Hat (Tigers) and I didn’t want to go. I was the first guy cut from their training camp two years in a row and didn’t know why. Odie pulled me aside and said, ‘if you’re going to pursue this you need to get out of here. When you get there, pursue your dreams.’ And I did.” His son, Terry, who is also known as Odie, skated at countless Esso practices and went on to claim the BCJHL scoring title in the 1978-79 season with 154 points. The year before, Terry racked up 132 points with Taber Golden Suns of the Alberta League. For the past decade, Odie Sr., 85, has put on his skates and dropped the puck for the Canadians oldtimers Tuesday nights.

By Kevin Mitchell Vernon Morning Star

Norman (Odie) Lowe played four games with the New York Rangers from 1948-50, earning one goal and one assist. He was an excellent playmaker and goal scorer who was best known in senior hockey circles. The Winnipeg native played junior with the hometown Rangers and Canadians of the MJHL and the Lethbridge Native Sons of the AJHL. He led each league in assists once each and then scored 27 goals as a rookie pro with the EHL’s New York Rovers in 1948-49. After a cup of mocha with the Rangers, he helped them the Rovers win the EHL title. Lowe spent a couple of more years in the minors before spending the last few years of his career in the senior Okanagan league. He starred for the 1956 Allan Cup champion Vernon Canadians and turned in his best performance with a league-high 61 goals and 114 points in 1956-57. Before retiring in 1961, he closed out his career in style by topping the 30-goal mark three straight years.

Cover: Vernon’s Jordan Burns, Alex Gillies and Curtis Lazar boosted the star-studded Watkin Motors Mustangs to the 2008 Coke Classic title, a threepeat for Vernon. Burns is a d-man with the Powell River Kings and has a scholarship locked up with Alaska-Fairbanks; Gillies is a sniper with the Salmon Arm SilverBacks and will play for the Michigan Tech Huskies next season; Lazar, a first-round Ottawa Senators’ draft, logged major minutes for Team Canada in the recent World Juniors and is a leading scorer with the Edmonton Oil Kings.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE On behalf of the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association executive, staff, volunteers and members, I would like to welcome all players, coaches and families to the 43rd Pee Wee Tier 1 Coca-Cola Classic!

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF VERNON 3400 - 30TH STREET VERNON, BRITISH COLUMBIA V1T 5E6 TELEPHONE (250) 545-1361 FAX (250) 545-4048 OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

This tournament has become a proud tradition in Vernon, and a highlight of the Vernon Winter Carnival held every year for 9 days in the 2nd week of February. This year’s theme is “Carnival of Superheroes”, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting term to describe the minor hockey experience. The countless hours that are dedicated to our youth by coaches, officials, administrators and hockey moms and dads, is truly heroic. It is through world class tournaments such as this, that all of your efforts are rewarded by the smiles on our kids’ faces.

Welcome to the 43rd Annual Coca-Cola Classic Invitational Pee Wee Hockey Tournament! The Organizing Committee has once again worked diligently to bring players and visitors to Vernon to participate in this fun Winter Carnival tournament. We will have teams from Seattle, Prince George, Nanaimo, Calgary, Edmonton, Strathcona and Warman Saskatchewan.

As an association, we embrace the principles of Respect in Sport, which reminds us to respect our coaches, volunteers, officials, the fans, and perhaps most importantly, our opponents. The history of this tournament is a proud one, and we are honored you have chosen Vernon and the Coca Cola Classic tournament as a place to build positive memories for your team and its supporters.

For our out of town guests, I hope you will enjoy your stay in Vernon and take time to explore the scenic sites and tourist attractions in Vernon and the surrounding communities. Good luck to all the players and coaches - let the games begin!

Have Fun! Sincerely, Richard Frater, President Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association

The Vernon Peewee Tier 1 Vipers play in the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association. They are affiliated in the OMAHA Tier 1 Division along with Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George. Being a very young team of 17 players, made up of 10 first years and 7 second years, the goal of the team is to stay focused and work hard to remain competitive. Vipers have continued to improve their record from the beginning of the season. The team style of play is to be strong, defensive and hard working. Team goals are being accomplished as the players strive to better their skill and team play both on and off the ice. The Vipers won gold at the Penticton tournament and have worked hard to close the gap between themselves and their league opponents. They look forward to the challenge of the Coca Cola Classic tournament.

The Blackfoot Chiefs PW 1 team plays in the Calgary Minor Hockey Association. There are 13 teams competing in the Pee Wee 1 division and the Chiefs are currently tied for second place in the seeding round. The team is comprised of 17 second year PeeWee players, of whom 12 are returning players from last year’s PW 1 team. This core group of 12 players have been together for the past six seasons. Already this year, the Blackfoot Chiefs have won the Springbank Jets AA Invitational Tournament and the Lethbridge AA Peewee Tournament, going undefeated in all of their games in each tournament. The Blackfoot Chiefs play a skilled passing game – their style of play is characterized by excellent puck movement, discipline and a focus on systems. They are successful because of their skating skills, strong sense of teamwork and their ability to quickly move the puck. The Chiefs coaching staff is led by Vern Olson. Mr. Olson and the balance of the coaching staff have been with the majority of the players on the team over the past 6 seasons. Head coach Vern Olson previously attended this tournament in 2010 as coach of another very successful Blackfoot Chiefs team.

Prince George has the only Per Wee Tier I program in Northern BC. Our closest competition is 500km away. We play in the OMAHA league and are off to a good start this year. We have 3 first year and 14 second year players. Last year’s Tier 1 team had a tough year with only 2 OMAHA wins. Most of the boys played together last year in Tier 2 and were successful in winning several tournaments. I would describe us as a quick, puck pursuing team that relies on hard work and support to be successful. My goal this year is; to develop all 17 players, to be “in” every game, and to be recognized as a tough team to play against. Our coaches bring a good balance of knowledge and experience to the team. Two played in the WHL and two have competed at a national level in baseball and judo. As a staff, we understand what it takes to have success as an athlete and are focussed on the long term development of our players. We believe that participating in the 43rd Annual Coca Cola Classic would be one of the highlights of our season.

Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association (SKAHA) and Seattle Junior Hockey Association (SJHA), both based in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, have partnered to create Team Seattle, the Premier AAA Hockey in the Northwest. Founded in 1964 and 1974 respectively, SKAHA and SJHA identify themselves through a long standing tradition of excellence and are dedicated to the maintenance and dynamic growth of youth hockey in Washington State. SKAHA is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and was recently designated as a “Model Association by USA Hockey, one of only 11 in the nation to receive this designation. Team Seattle is part of the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA) in the Lower Mainland District of BC Hockey. We are mid-way through our season in flight 2 of the Peewee A Division with a 6-5-1 record. Flight 2 is very evenly matched as the 3rd through 8th ranked team in this 11 team flight are separated by only 7 points. Our Team is comprised of 16 second year players and 1 first year player, a majority of our team has been playing together for three years. Year by year our team has improved their play to gain higher tier level rank relative to the competition. This year we have climbed to flight 2, to be among the top 15 teams in the PCAHA League. Our players are enthusiastic about developing their skills and work persistently to raise their level of play. We implement a high-pressure, puck possession style game with specific focus on skating, passing, and communication. As a team, we are required to travel internationally for many of our games, this fact, in addition to the rigours of game itself, require extraordinary discipline. This discipline incorporates itself into the fabric of our players; we pride ourselves on player support both on and off the ice to inspire their growth as a person. Our priorities focus on the development of our team to provide continuous improvement in the basic skills and instil a lifetime love for the game of hockey.

Strathcona Warriors’ season’s plan is built around skills and habit development. Our plan also includes a strong emphasis on life skills development for our players. Our hope is that our process is successful and the result is a return to the Alberta Provincial Tournament. The Strathcona Warriors style of play this season embodies a well balanced scoring attack with sound defensive structure and solid goaltending between two goalies. HISTORY OF TROPHIES “A” DIVISION TROPHY - AMY MYLES TROPHY Best known for her untiring work with the Vernon & District Minor Hockey Association, Mrs. Myles was a familiar figure around the arena for over 15 years. She was one of the first mothers to start the “Mothers’ Auxiliary to Minor Hockey”. In April 1965, Minor Hockey said “thank you” to Mrs. Myles by presenting her with a Life Membership in the association. In 1968 the CAHA presented her with a Scroll of Merit in recognition of her outstanding service and dedication to hockey and to the physical and mental development of young Canadians. Born in Ontario, she moved to Vernon with her husband Dan after the Second World War. She is survived by her husband Dan and one son and daughter. Amy Myles was a true and great friend to all who knew her. “B” DIVISION TROPHY - ALEX KULY TROPHY Born and raised in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Alex Kuly played some of his Junior Hockey with Portage La Prairie Terriers. He then moved to the Flin Flon Bombers defence. During the war he served in the Air Force as a physical education instructor and later returned to play defence for the Flin Flon Bombers. He moved to play defence for Kamloops, and to Vernon where he coached for one season. He was the head referee for the Okanagan Mainline Minor Hockey Association until he was transferred to Quesnel as the Forest Ranger. While in Quesnel he coached the Quesnel Kangaroos. He returned to Vernon in 1961 where he was a strong supporter of Minor Hockey. “C” DIVISION TROPHY - MICKEY McMAHON TROPHY Born in Nelson, raised in Revelstoke, Mickey McMahon came to Vernon in 1951, where he was employed as a Telegrapher for the CPR. His avid interest in sports and a love of hockey, along with his enthusiasm for the younger players started his involvement with Minor Hockey in 1968. He managed the pup division and Pee Wee rep teams. Along with coach Walt Trentini, he took the team to win the “A” Division in 1973 and “B” Division in 1974. Mickey held various positions in Minor Hockey including President, 1975-76. He was presented with a Scroll of Merit in 1972 by the Canadian Legion for his contribution to Minor Hockey. In 1977 he was honoured by the Mother’s Auxiliary and was also presented with a Life Membership in the Vernon Minor Hockey Association. He is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter. “D” DIVISION TROPHY - MICKEY OGASAWARA TROPHY Michael Barton “Mickey” Ogasawara was born in Vernon July 22, 1936. Mickey started playing hockey as a Pee Wee, then played with the bantam and midget rep teams who won valley titles. In 1952, although of midget age, he helped the Vernon Juveniles Hockey Club to win the B.C. Championship in Trail. In 1953, he played for the Juvenile Lacrosse team, coached by the late Ben Douglas and they won the B.C. Juvenile Championship, defeating New Westminister at the coast. In 1954, he was catcher for Nick’s Aces softball team (fastpitch) and won the B.C. Senior “B” Championship in Aldergrove. In 1956, the Vernon Junior Hockey team won the B.C. Championship in Victoria with Mickey as a team member. In 1954 he started work for Kelly Douglas & Co., and became a “25 Year Club” member. After marriage he was head referee for the North Okanagan Hockey League and in the summer he umpired senior baseball games throughout the valley. His two daughters are carrying on his athletic traditions. Mickey passed away October 18, 1981. DAN OXNARD TROPHY - MOST SPORTSMANLIKE TEAM Dan Oxnard was born in Lytton, B.C. August 1944 and moved to Vernon in 1966. He was a professional firefighter for the Vernon Fire Department for 28 years. Dan gave a great deal of his time off helping raise money for Muscular Dystrophy and the B.C. Burn Unit. He got involved in Minor Hockey in 1975 where he spent 12 years coaching, managing teams or holding down executive positions as Director, Vice President and President. If there was a job to be done Dan was always there to help. Dan joined the Pee Wee Hockey tournament committee in 1985, spending the next 8 years making it the success it is today. Dan died in a skiing accident in January 1995. Dan is survived by his wife Darlene, daughter Tanis and son Dano. He is missed by all who knew him. ERNIE KOWAL TROPHY - COACH’S AWARD Ernie Kowal was active in Junior A and minor hockey in Vernon since moving to the city in 1958. ‘Esso Ernie’ served as a coach, manager, vice-president and president in the Vernon Minor Hockey Association and was an owner with the Vernon Essos of the B.C. Junior Hockey League. A volunteer firefighter and former member of the RCMP Auxiliary force, Ernie died December 12, 1997 at the age of 63. He is survived by his wife Viv, son Tom (now an NHL referee) and daughter Sue. Ernie and his brother-in-law, Vern Dye, ran the Junior A franchise in Vernon for more than 20 years and the two men used their own vehicles to transport players on road trips. Ernie coached the juvenile Reps in 1983 and made national headlines with a no swearing policy on the team. He was named provincial coach-of-the-year in 1985 after he and Tom lead the Vernon Atom Reps to the Okanagan title.
