Mero and Comeau trial set Robert Mike Mero and Kale Raymond Comeau’s trial has been slated.

The two men, charged in connection with a shooting, will stand trial Sept. 8.

Comeau and Mero are charged with discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life and pointing a firearm and breaching in relation to a June 2 shooting incident in the 400 block of Hartley Street.

The rounds did not strike anyone, but penetrated a window and siding of a residence.

The following day members of the Quesnel RCMP executed a search warrant in connection to the shooting.

Shortly after noon on that Sunday, the warrant to search was executed on a Red Bluff Road property which resulted in the seizure of a quantity of cocaine, heroin and two prohibited weapons.

CNC tuition increase expected The College of New Caledonia’s Board of Governors voted Friday in favour of raising tuition and mandatory fees by up to two per cent this fall.

The move is predicted to generate about $100,000, depending on enrolment.

“It will help a little bit, but frankly it’s a drop in the bucket as we look to cut another $1.2 million from our budget once again this year,” CNC interim president Bryn Kulmatycki said.

“We’ve had to cut millions from our budget for several years now and it has become very difficult to do.”

to resolve a predicted $1.2 million budget shortfall for the 2014/15 fiscal year, due to rising costs and overall funding, which has been stagnant.

“We will continue to look for cost savings with our usual measures, such as reducing expenditures, reallocating

unused budgets, as well as early retirement incentives and voluntary severance packages,” Kulmatycki said.

“But we have been doing that for years and it likely won’t be enough anymore, which means we will likely have to look at further efficiencies and reductions.”

Colleges are required by provincial legislation to plan for a balanced budget every year, which means changes to the budget are necessary in order to deal with the projected shortfall.

Final 2014/15 operating budget approval will occur at the board meeting April 25.

New Homes Registry Keeps Homebuyers Informed This helpful, easy-to-use, online resource is available from the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) website at www.hpo.bc.ca. Savvy homebuyers are using it to make more informed purchasing decisions.

The New Homes Registry provides free access to find out if a home has a policy of home warranty insurance and is built by a Licensed Residential Builder, or whether it’s built without home warranty insurance. Homebuyers can obtain valuable information such as the name and contact number of the warranty provider, the builder’s warranty number and whether an owner-built home can be legally offered for sale.

Every new home built for sale by a Licensed Residential Builder in British Columbia is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance.

Tourism committee soliciting photographers I

would like to introduce the City of Quesnel’s Tourism and Civic Pride Committee and tell you a little bit about them.

This is a select committee established

by Quesnel City Council in January of last year to attract visitors to Quesnel through initiatives developed in partnership with local and regional organizations; enhance the quality of life of residents through projects that promote community involvement, foster civic pride and make Quesnel a more appealing place to live, work and play; and to make recommendations to council regarding tourism and civic pride related issues or concerns.

Their role includes: maintaining and enhancing the banner program; supporting community groups with beautification projects; and developing tourism projects and partnerships.

The meetings are open to the public.

Meetings are generally held the second Thursday of each month.

Baker Creek 4-H members recognized

Barlow Creek 4-H Club celebrated their 2013 awards banquet with a wonderful dinner.

Members, parents, grandparents, buyers and sponsors all attended. After dinner, Cody Dillabough presented a slideshow of the year and then we presented our awards to the members.

High Point senior member was awarded to Kayleen Dillabough, with Amber Lindsay receiving the high point junior award. Special recognition was given to Shannon Foley for receiving the honours of High Point District Junior Judge. Every member was recognized with an award for their hard work over the year.

A special highlight of the evening was recognizing their beef leader, Marlene Magnowski with a birthday cake for her 75th birthday. Team leader Gwen Dillabough received her leader award from the province for 15 years of leadership.

It was a fun filled evening for all and everyone is looking forward to another awesome year. We would like to thank all of our sponsor, buyers and volunteers for their dedication to the 4-H program.

court decision on Monday awarding the B.C. Teachers Federation $2 million in damages, and ordering a return to class size and composition provisions in a teachers’ contract from almost 15 years ago, is almost certain to lead to political strife.

Some estimates suggest the cost of the judgment to taxpayers could total $1 billion. If that indeed is the case, the provincial government is almost certain to appeal, as Premier Christy Clark hinted on Tuesday.

The ruling by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Susan Griffin speculated (because there is no hard evidence on the record, due to cabinet confidentiality) that the provincial government deliberately stalled on renegotiating the class size and composition provisions with the BCTF in 2011. Griffin was the author of an earlier court ruling calling for new legislation within a year.

In her ruling, she stated “(Negotiators’) strategy was to put such pressure on the union that it would provoke a strike by the union.

The government representatives thought this would give government the opportunity to gain political support for imposing legislation on the union.”

Nothing else in the lengthy ruling, other than a suggestion that cabinet documents back up this assertion, offers any proof. Those cabinet documents have not been released, but were used as evidence in the trial.

The class size and composition provisions were inserted in a contract imposed by the former NDP government on school boards. They had resisted, fearing that the rigid guidelines would make it very difficult to properly staff classrooms. In fact, what happened is that classrooms which were one student over the limit were sometimes split in two, or the extra student was transported to another school. While this certainly benefited teachers, its impact on students was questionable.

There is no doubt that if classes are too large, it has an impact on how students learn. And the number of special needs students in a classroom must be at a manageable level. But hard and fast limits, imposed by a judge, will be costly to taxpayers, and have limited benefit for students.

y friend Laurie posted a picture of Barbara Eden’s “I Dream of Jeannie” character online, prompting comparisons between her and Elizabeth Montgomery’s “Bewitched” character – also a blonde beauty who was magically inclined.

Laurie made the observation that on both television shows these nice, sweet characters had evil, manipulative sisters, comically played by the lead actresses wearing dark wigs.

“Nice bit of cultural indoctrination there,” she said.

“Just as bad as Disney and other fairy tales.”

It immediately had me thinking of additional characters that fit that good-versus-bad stereotype.

Betty and Veronica from the Archie comics, Krystle and Alexis Carrington from Dynasty, and Aurora and her evil stepmother from Sleeping Beauty were the first few that popped to mind.

I couldn’t help but agree, and I had noticed this before, but I wondered if her being a brunette made her more conscious of that particular typecasting, while I was more in tune with another one: the dumb blonde cliché.

I can’t even begin to count how many blonde jokes I’ve heard in my life. I used to tell them myself just to beat people to the punch. Some are funny, but in reality when someone insinuates that I lack intelligence because of my hair color, it’s annoying.

I guess that’s why it can irritate Laurie when someone jokes about brunettes being bitter or

take off an uncomfortable Halloween wig and finally be myself again. If someone didn’t like my reversal, I no longer cared.

It felt absurd to be judged on something so insignificant. Does the color of a man’s hair impact the way people perceive him?

Not to the same degree as a woman, I’m sure.

There are so many ludicrous stereotypes about many different things that can affect men as well.

Sweeping over-simplified generalizations are made about people all the time.

Sometimes with horrific results.

What I learned as a child, and now teach my own kids, is that regardless of one’s ethnicity, faith, profession, gender, age, income, appearance, sexual preference or whatever, there are wonderful and horrible people within each group.

Judging people based on stereotypes is dumb. Being a blonde is not.

less attractive - yet another ridiculous stereotype.

The concept that hair color can actually affect the perception people have regarding women’s characters, brain power or beauty is astonishing. But it can.

In my twenties, I dyed my naturally dirty blonde hair to a beautiful, dark rich brown. I loved the colour.

Unfortunately it didn’t love me and I looked terrible. I had to wear heavy make-up so my face wouldn’t look washed out.

Despite this, I had several people tell me I looked better and smarter after the change.

One friend said that it was an improvement over my “fake, blonde bimbo image.”

Ironically, my former self was far more natural than this transformed version of me that she preferred.

To prevent damaging my hair too much, I lived as a brunette for longer than I wanted to and felt relief when I returned to my original color. It felt as though I was able to

very parent is concerned about their children’s development.

Are they growing as they should? Can they draw with a pencil? Can they say their name?Are they healthy? These are just a few questions as parents we ask ourselves, our doctors, our friends and our neighbours.

The Quesnel Success by Six table has identified a need to support children under the age of six in meeting their development expectations through a variety of programs throughout the community.

This unique partnership, launched in 2003 in Quesnel, is dedicated to ensuring children up to six years of age across B.C. have access to programs and services that support their healthy growth and development.

Quesnel Success by Six is amongst the 250 communities across B.C. that continues to ensure success in children under the age of six. Through a variety of services, supports, events and community education,

Quesnel Success by Six continues to work toward ensuring children within Quesnel are supported for optimal growth and success. One of these initiatives, supported by Quesnel Success by Six, is quarterly three-year-old developmental screenings.

This event gives threeyear-old children an opportunity to have qualified professionals look at different areas of development.

As parents know, there is a gap between 18 month old immunizations and school entry immunizations.

This is a large gap of time where many children may not see

a health professional, hindering parents from learning more about the development needs of their children.

This is also a time where there is a huge amount of development taking place in young children.

The three-year-old screening gives parents an opportunity to visit the CDC and be welcomed

by Northern Health, the Child Development Centre, School District 28 and North Cariboo Aboriginal Family Program Society staff to give families an opportunity to review their child’s development and address any concerns.

What does a three-

year-old screening look like? The child is guided through a number of stations to be screened in different areas of development and health.

The screening includes the ages and stages developmental questionnaire. This is a list of activities and observations to see if your child is meeting expectations in communication, fine motor (small muscle), gross motor (large muscle), personal-social and problem solving development. Next children’s teeth health is checked and then they move on to vision screening. In addition

parents are welcome to fill out a nutrition questionnaire and ask any questions regarding their children’s nutritional health. If your child is between the ages of 2.5 years and four and you are interested in attending the three-year-old screening please call the Quesnel Health Unit at 250-991-7571.

The next three-yearold Screening will be held February 7, 2014 at the Child Development Center.

Supreme Court teacher ruling may be appealed, premier says

The B.C. government is considering an appeal of a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that rejects legislation restricting teacher bargaining and assesses a penalty of $2 million plus court costs.

“It doesn’t reflect government’s view of the case and the facts in the case,” Premier Christy Clark told a Kamloops radio station Tuesday.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said he is “disappointed” by the ruling and ministry staff will study it before deciding on a possible appeal.

Fassbender said he disagrees with the judge’s conclusion that the government tried to provoke a strike by reintroducing provisions that had been struck down by the same judge.

“What we need to do is to review the judge’s ruling in detail to see what the implications are, but clearly my message to school districts, to parents, is it’s business as usual in our schools,” Fassbender said.

The B.C. Supreme Court ruling rejected the provincial government’s effort to keep class size and special needs support off the bargaining table with teachers and ordered the government to pay $2 million in damages to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation.

In a ruling released Monday, Justice Susan Griffin said the B.C. government’s replacement legislation, passed in 2011, is as unconstitutional as the 2002 law called Bill 28 that removed class size and special needs support from union working conditions.

“The court concluded that the government did not negotiate in good faith with the union after the Bill 28 decision,” Griffin wrote.

“One of the problems was that the government representatives were preoccupied with another strategy.

Their strategy was to put such pressure

on the union that it would provoke a strike. The government representatives thought this would give government the opportunity to gain

political support for imposing legislation on the union.”

The ruling strikes down the portions of the new legislation that have not already

expired.

BCTF president Jim Iker said the ruling returns contract language that was in place in 2002 and he expects that the

province’s 60 school districts will have to rehire teachers and special needs assistants to reduce class size. He said there were 1,200 education

specialists affected by the 2002 legislation, including teacher-librarians and counsellors.

NDP education critic Rob Fleming called

the ruling “real blow to the B.C. Liberals’ credibility,” adding it traces back to Premier Christy Clark’s time as education minister in 2002.

BETTY LOU SMITH

May. 23, 1943 - Dec. 23, 2013 Betty passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 23, 2013, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 70.

Betty was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Sask, the fourth daughter of Ted & Violet Elinsky. Betty married Bill Smith in Moose Jaw on April 15, 1961. She moved to BC with her husband and young family in the late 60’s and finally settled in Quesnel in 1972.

She was predeceased by her parents, her son Doug Smith, brother Doug Elinsky & sister Jacky Arnold. Betty is survived by her son Bill, daughters Patti Campbell and Tanya Smith, grandchildren: Riley, Shelby, Cherille, Jesse & Justine Smith, Cody and Paris Campbell and one great granddaughter, Maia Trudeau. Sisters: Trudy Munroe, Carol Haakenson, Lee Pelley, Wanda Brohman and brother Ted Elinsky.

As were her wishes, no funeral service was held, however a small graveside memorial service is planned for May 28, 2014, when her ashes will be laid to rest with her beloved son Doug.

It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you dress for the game, or at least that seemed to be the motto of some of the teams at the ladies bonspiel, who took the Luau theme to heart.

Those wishing to honor Betty Smith may make a donation in her memory to Quesnel Hospice & Palliative Care, the Canadian Cancer Society, or another charity of their choice.

D

ual youth nominees and two adult nominees will be inducted into the Gallery of Honour Feb. 8 in the Arts Centre foyer at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre.

Deni and Adam Johnson, Quesnel’s premier youth fiddlers, were selected based on their outstanding musical careers, which began when each brother showed remarkable talent in their childhood.

Deni knew at the age of eight fiddling was his passion; for Adam he quickly followed in his brother’s footsteps, first participating in the Treat at Gavin Lake at the age of six.

Deni has won numerous trophies and awards since he first started competing and became B.C. champion in 2011 and again in 2012.

In 2012, both Deni and Adam were chosen to represent B.C. at the Canadian Grand Masters contest in Ottawa.

Deni competed again at the Canadian Grand Masters in 2013 in Saskatoon, Saskachewan.

The Johnson brothers remain committed to their community and remain members of the Quesnel Old Time Fiddlers. Deni has added guitar-playing to his skill set and provides back-up for other musicians, including his brother Adam.

Both are available to help out at various functions. Adam’s skill, fiddling style and endearing personality make him an audience favourite.

In the adult category, Don Hendry was selected for his amazing contribution to the arts and culture of Quesnel. Born and raised in Quesnel, Don pursued a teaching career and returned to Quesnel in 1977, teaching elementary and high school. He brought his love of theatre to his teaching, having discovered it in the 1950s with Quesnel Little Theatre where he learned set construction, stage management and even dabbled in acting.

Blending his teaching with his arts, this community booster introduced many young students to the joy of the theatre and the arts.

Don rekindled his love of theatre (even studied theatre in university) once he returned to Quesnel where both he and his wife Darleen became involved in Quesnel Little Theatre and Chuck Mobley’s annual musicals.

Don always went the extra mile, involving himself in the organization and administration of theatre as well as arts groups in the community.

Over the years, Don joined the

Quesnel and District Community Arts Council and continued to learn the many facets of administration including grant writing and board development. His interests were varied and deep. He wasn’t intimidated by standing for the highest executive positions including president of the QDCAC. Under his guidance and participation, Don brought many programs, events and projects to the community which advanced the arts and theatre scene in Quesnel including the establishment of the Arts Centre at the Arts and Recreation Centre. He organized Art Walks, banner projects, Winter Games and chaired the art gallery committee for several years. Don was also an integral part of Artists in the Garden, all the while supporting his artist wife and many other artists in the community as well as being a strong supporter of cultural advancements.

The second nominee in the adult category is master quilter Judy Crannis. For more than 25 years she has been a member of the Quesnel Quilters Guild and has served on the executive many times.

Judy attended her first quilting class more than 30 years ago and was immediately captivated by the art form. Fabric, textures, colours and design fascinated her; the choice of blocks and patterns, the precision of the cutting and piecing and the pleasure of hand quilting appealed to her.

It wasn’t long before this fabric artist was requested to teach a class and that continues to this day. As her skills developed, her style was refined and her mastery of quilting continues to reach new heights.

Her work has moved from mastering techniques to creating new techniques and her work has moved from the traditional to cutting edge creations, although traditional quilting remains her first love.

Teaching, displaying and to some extent, competing provides great satisfaction to Judy. Sharing with other quilters is also a wonderful source of pleasure for her. As she continues to grow, learn and create, Judy’s love of quilting has never diminished nor has her desire to share her knowledge and skills. She has many awards and recognitions to her credit and has donated many pieces of her work to local organizations and facilities.

The public is invited to join the celebration of this year’s inductees at the Arts and Recreation Centre, Feb. 8, doors open at 6 p.m., ceremony at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment and refreshments to follow.

Free workshop all about writing Quesnel Wordspinners present Vivien Lougheed Feb. 8 ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Quesnel Wordspinners are hosting a free writing workshop, Feb. 8 and Prince George travel writer Vivien Lougheed will offer a combination workshop of inspiring discussions of what has worked for her and explorations of writing techniques.

This workshop will appeal to all levels of writers through all genres.

Throughout the day, participants will be put to work, as guided by Lougheed, through various writing exercises, discussions and other activities covering such issues as editing (both externally and self-editing), deleting clichés and other common words from your writing, tightening your prose to brighten and enliven your work, Lougheed’s journey through the various publishing options, her take on blogs, short stories and of course honing your writing skills.

Lougheed has published in many formats, including traditional publishers, self-publishing and e-books. She and her husband now mail self-publish and sell

through their website and Amazon. They are still open to the traditional avenue if the book warrants this approach.

Her passion for writing is coupled with her love of exploration and travel, giving her a primary focus for her work. Lougheed has also published pamphlets on various trials in the north and her books include Sidetracked: The Struggle for B.C.’s Fossils; Forbidden Mountains –the journey of two women who sneak into Tibet via Northern Pakistan; and Understanding Bolivia – the story of the rich culture and characters found in this country of extremes.

Her latest writing adventure is into the newest publishing style – short novella.

Lougheed is coauthoring this book on a summer trip in Kluane. It will be approximately 30,000 – 40,000 words in length and may be published an e-book, pdf and perhaps print.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Quesnel figure skaters were in Williams Lake making an impression and taking medals last weekend.

“We cleaned up,” coach Wendy Berezowski said.

“It was a really good regional competition.”

The team went into the competition with lofty goals, which they exceeded with the treasure chest of medals they brought back Topping the performances was a gold skate from Selena Van Aert in the Gold Ladies Freeskate category.

“She had a fabulous, fabulous freeskate,” Berezowski said.

The win was made that much sweeter as it was the second time Van Aert had beat last year’s Super Skate champion Right behind Van Aert was Carmen Huang who got the silver in the same category.

In the next category down, Senior Silver Ladies, Casey Greenwood took the top podium position. In the Junior Silver Ladies, Kayla Flanagan skated to a bronze finish.

Beverly Smetaniuk won her star four girls.

The team sent 14 skaters south to Quesnel and all performed well Berezowski said.

The skating club will be in Ft. St. John at the end of February for the Totem Interclub

competition hoping to pick up some more points before heading to Kelowna to for the superseries STARSkate final in March.

“We’re hoping for a couple of gold medals in that,” Berezowski said.

“They’re ready and they’re geared up for sure.”

The Quesnel Ladies Curling Club held their 54th annual 'Wheel 'n Spiel' this weekend, Jan. 24-26, which saw 27 teams take part, including four from out of town.

Deb Burton and her rink, Gayle Campbell, Vera Bishop and Carol Pitkin organized the event with a Hawaiian Luau theme which saw them win the best dressed costume with their Tiki Warrior dancers.

The curling rink was alive with fun and excitement all weekend.

The Terry Shpak rink was back in the 'A' final to defend her 2013 title, however the Tracey Jones rink from Prince George won the event 9 -3.

Terry and her teammates, Ashley Kopetski, Laurie Lucas and Cindy Nikirk played some excellent games to get to the final, but the Tracey Jones rink, including Kay Thompson and Crystal Haller, both formerly of Quesnel, and Loreen Amonson brought their A game, resulting in Jones calling the game after

five ends of play. Placing third and fourth in the A were the Ev Lawson and Lori Wawryk rinks.

The 'B' final was a very close game. The Daryl Bosch rink, with Bosch from Kamloops and the rest of the rink, Lynn Lanki, Monica Lachappelle and Lori Bloudoff from Williams Lake, got on the board in the third end with one against the Linda Woods rink, including Connie Pomero, Linda Harris and Brenda Logelin. After the sixth end, the game was tied at 4-4.

Woods placed one in the seventh, but Bosch came out strong in the eighth to win the game 7-5. Coming third and fourth in the 'B' were the Rio Dinu rink, from Quesnel, and the Dolly Poitras rink, from P.G. The 'C' final was played but the Carol Thatcher rink, with Wendy Needham, Penni Yamamoto and Karen Van Essen, and the Louise Scott rink, with Julie Thony, Doreen Gurnett and Christine Clarke.

The points went back and forth, but Thatcher got four in the third end, bringing the score to 6-1.

It looked like Scott was going to come back, getting to points in the fourth but called the game after five ends when Thatcher came out strong and took five points, bringing the score to 11-2.

Rounding out the winners, third and fourth in the 'C' final went to the Luanne Coffey and Dana Johansen rinks.

The Daryl Bosch rink, with Bosch originally from Williams Lake, have made it to the Ladies Bonspiel for 36 years since they started in 1977.

With credit going to all the volunteers that help our bonspiel run smooth, from the food, entertainment, prizes and keeping the ice to perfection, the Bosch rink has already booked their room and will be back for the 55th annual bonspiel next January.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter A record number dogsleds and drivers slipped back in time to deliver mail the old fashioned way on the weekend, emitting a whisper of runners on snow, passing through forest and over mountain under ideal conditions.

“We enjoyed outstanding weather, with several feet of snow on the ground and ‘just right’ temperatures that allowed for both great dog mushing and spectator viewing,” Jeff Dinsdale, organizer and musher, said.

Forty-three participants, including mushers, skiers and skijorers (skiers pulled by dogs) took part in the 22nd annual running of the Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Mail Run, taking with them more than 2000 pieces of mail.

The event extended over three days and three distinct trails, starting at Umiti, then moving to Troll Mountain on the second day, before finishing in Wells, where the mail is delivered on it’s way out of town, the province, and, for a few letters, an international trip.

The trails were fabulous, according to Dinsdale, with great snow and a firm surface for the dogs to run on. The great conditions stood in contrast to most of the races on the dogsled calendars, many of which have been cancelled due to lack of snow.

“We have some of the finest condition in western North America now,” Dinsdale said.

The trails through the mountain offered some challenging climbs to the teams of dogs, but no dogs were injured, said Dinsdale. And while the climbs were difficult, the views at the tops were worth it, with beautiful vistas of snow covered pine forests and mountains.

The event was also a success for those whose interests were of a more passive nature.

“Each of the venues was well attended, each day the parking areas were crowded as folks took in the dog mushing action,” Dinsdale said.

“In addition, the musher’s sports event, the banquet and auction, the pot luck supper and the musher’s meeting offered lots of fun and the opportunity to make new friendships.”

The finale on Sunday was equally well attended as the mushers and the dog teams entered the last leg and a town preserved as it was when dogsled mail delivery was a common thing in North America, instead of, as it is now, only done during the Mail Run. “The streets of Barkerville were full of smiling dog mushing/Mail Run fans.” Dinsdale said.

“It is a memorable sight to see dog team after skier after dog team moving down Barkerville’s main street amidst eight foot snow banks and stopping in front of B.C.’s fifth oldest post office to hand the mail over to the postal superintendent.”

The none competitive nature of the event brought out an array of people, including families three generations deep and a team of veteran dogs, retirees after having faced the hardship of the Iditarod, among other races.

And, of course, the volunteers were as important as the dogs, mushers and weather in keeping the race going smoothly.

“Hats off to organizers, the almost 100 volunteers, all of the participants and the community supporters,” Dinsdale said.

“Everyone is urged to post their photos and to view them on the club Facebook page Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Mail Run.”

The North Cariboo Aboriginal Family Program Society is seeking a full-time Site Coordinator for a new program: Strengthening Families. This is a multi-year project funded by the National Crime Prevention Centre. The purpose of the program is to strengthen the positive functioning of families through the skills and knowledge-building of all participating family members.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and significant experience in establishing and managing social service programs, particularly those related to family strengthening and multi-barrier clients. Candidates with signficant experience and no degree will be considered. The Site Coordinator will supervise a number of part-time program facilitators and work closely with an advisory body as well as an evaluation team and a variety of community partners.

Demonstrated successful experience in community collaboration and a solid knowledge of the local social services community is required.

There is outreach work in this program, so the successful candidate must have his/her own vehicle and a valid BC Drivers License. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience working effectively with Aboriginal people and their communities and a thorough understanding of local Aboriginal culture.

One bad Durango in a good way The 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat.

This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beautiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment.

Looks I can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. Because of standard AWD and other packaging changes, the starting price is higher than direct competitors, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder. Both those vehicles have a base model that starts around $30,000, the Durango, in contrast, starts at $39,995 and tops out at $51,995. This Citadel model, with options, is over $60,000.

Verdict This latest Durango is yet another example of what Chrysler is doing right.

It is loaded with the latest technology, has a class leading 8-speed automatic, attitude and room to spare. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be coming to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better.

The Toyota Sienna has evolved and adapted to a changing market continuously since its introduction in 1998.

Looks: The Sienna van has a very familiar front end. Look no further than the Toyota Venza where it not only shares the same face but also the same platform. In fact, this platform is used in the Highlander, RAV4, and

Camry.

This new look is attracting buyers that in the past would not see themselves driving a minivan. When I drove it, I felt as if I was driving a crossover, lots of room and power. I like the LED taillights, very bright and easy to see. The optional power sliding doors have retractable windows and are larger making it easier for getting in and out. They are controlled by a push of a button on the key fob.

In The Cab: There is plenty of leg room for the driver and front passenger. Unlike previous Sienna vans where the driver’s seat would only go back so far and taller people ended up with their knees up around the steering wheel. This version has full adjustability with a longer and wider seat cushion that can make

drivers of any size comfortable. The second row has captain’s chairs that have a one touch walk-in feature and the third row is a 60/40 split one-touch split and stow mechanism that folds seats flat for storage. The XLE Limited comes with a multi-panel moon roof that features two independently controlled sunroofs. The front is a tilt and slide, while the rear just slides.

Safety first: There are seven standard airbags, including dual stage front and seat mounted side airbags for driver and front passenger, plus a new driver side knee airbag.

Verdict: I like the improved styling in this vehicle and the roomy interior. Although there is enough power to move this vehicle along very well, I did notice the transmission constantly shifting down looking for more power when fully loaded with 7 passengers.

It’s hard to believe that the BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) was launched in the last century.

It was a pioneer vehicle in 1999, which essentially launched a brand new segment.

To me, I find the overall looks to be understated but not necessarily awe-inspiring. My mind wasn’t blown when I first laid eyes on it. Then again, looks aren’t everything.

If functionality is what you’re after, the X5 has plenty of that.

Instead of starting in the front row, let’s skip to the back seats.

The leather-trimmed cabin offers each occupant a cuddle when sitting inside. Furthermore, legroom in the second row is generous,

especially when the front seats aren’t pushed all the way back.

There’s even a decent amount of space in the cargo area, which totals 650L. In the driver’s seat, the captain of this luxurious vehicle has the best of all worlds. Within arm’s reach is the iDrive infotainment system, easily readable centre stack and the gearshift lever to the 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic. The transmission is then linked to BMW’s award-winning engine.

Powering this particular vehicle

an electric motor, it’s still classified as a PHEV. A small on-board gas engine generates electricity, when necessary.

The new Honda Accord Hybrid (a HEV) further blurs the differences between HEV and PHEV, as it uses the same two-motor powertrain used in the Accord Plug-in Hybrid (a PHEV edition that’s currently only sold in selected markets). At speeds under 80 km/h the road wheels are driven by an electric motor and its Atkinson cycle gas engine is only used to generate electrical power, when needed.

The current list price for an Accord EX-L is $29,455 and the Accord Hybrid starts at $29,590, which is only $135 more. The top-line Accord Touring V6 sells for $35,400 and the Touring edition of Accord Hybrid is $36,690, just an extra $290. The price differential is almost non-existent. continued on page 14

Viewed through the lens of the passage of 40 or 50 years, our favorite classic TV shows seem to have been full of great classic cars.

Of course, they were all just new cars then and their presence on our favorite shows was no accident. It was the dawn of the product-placement era, and cars were by far the choicest products to embed in shows like “Green Acres” and “Bewitched.” In those days, the Big Three got near-ex-

clusive sponsorships on the shows plus a credit at the end. Here are some favorite shows and the brand of cars they featured: • “The Rockford Files”: One of the last great private-eye shows, former big-screen star James Garner played slick Jim Rockford to perfection. And while Rockford almost never used a gun, he did use a gold Pontiac Firebird on a regular basis.

Frequent continuity errors meant that Rockford could be seen driving several different years of mid-’70s Firebirds in one scene.

Choosing HEV or PHEV boils-down to whether an owner can take full advantage of the plug-in electrical storage feature and normal driving commutes are within the electric-only speed and distance range of the PHEV. A low-speed urban driving commute allowing the PHEV to be charged at home overnight and topped-up again while at work, during the day, would be an ideal scenario.

While the popularity of hybrid vehicles continues to grow, barring a sudden spike in the price of oil/gasoline, a meteoric rise in the popularity of alternatives to the old reliable gas engine vehicle is unlikely. Then again, who knows what the future, or the next twist in evolution, will bring. Drives-U-Crazy Roundabout rebels My peeve is people who “crash” thru a roundabout, writes reader John Haygarth.

Approaching one, you slow down and look left. If someone is already in, let them continue. Do not “cut” them off as many do here in Penticton. Before reaching your exit, you signal right to let others know they can enter. They are a great way to filter traffic different ways without traffic lights and if used correctly can actually speed up your trip.

Green Car Journal has awarded the all-new Cadillac ELR electrified luxury coupe its 2014 Green Car Technology Award for the Regen on Demand system.

The technology allows the driver to use paddle shifters on the steering wheel to temporarily regenerate energy and store it as electricity in the battery pack for

later use.

“Putting regenerative braking at the driver’s fingertips supports the ELR’s 340-mile total driving range while also adding a fun-to-drive element to the premium luxury coupe,” said Jim Vurpillat, director of emerging markets at Cadillac.

Powering the ELR is a combination of pure electric drive and an effi-

cient, range-extending 1.4L gasoline-powered electric generator.

Another perk of the steering wheel? It’s heated. Other things inside that keep you and the passengers warm is the ability to control four different climate zones. Thanks to the Premium Package ($5,500) one of its features is the Auto 4-Zone Climate Control. This package also adds heated rear seats, a head-up display, manual side sunshades, and a feature that I really like, surround view with top view.

Surround view allows gives you a 270° projection of what’s going on around the X5. For a vehicle as large as it is, it’s a wonderful feature to have.

Of course, BMW also loaded this particular test vehicle with the Technology Package ($3,800) that includes active LED headlights, active bind spot detection, lane departure and collision warning and more.

And to make life behind the wheel a little more musical, there was an integrated Bang and Olufsen system that will add $4,900 to the base MSRP of $62,900. The price as tested came to $77,950 (excluding the destination charge of $2,095)
