Kay Deedrick awarded for years of service Lacombe resident involved in several community initiatives

A

long-time volunteer has been recognized at a provincial level.

Kay Deedrick, a volunteer with Family and Community Support Services, recently received an Award of Merit from Alberta Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) after being nominated by Lacombe’s local chapter.

Deedrick said that she appreciates the nomination from the local office and added that their appreciation is all the thanks she needs.

She added that, in any case, volunteering is its own reward as she finds it quite enjoyable.

“You know, everyone likes to do things, do something, for somebody,” said Deedrick. “It makes you good when you do something for somebody that can’t do it for themselves.”

With two decades of service, Deedrick is the longest serving volunteer at Lacombe FCSS. She first became involved with FCSS when the organization was having trouble between staffing and budgeting, she said.

According to Deedrick, FCSS had more work than its two full-time and two part-time staff members could accomplish, but didn’t have the budget to hire another employee to lighten the load.

Knowing someone on the FCSS board, Deedrick asked her friend why FCSS was not using volunteers to pick up the extra work. Deedrick added that, at the time, she had just returned from living in Germany where volunteers were used extensively in the school system and that she herself had worked in the library of the school on the military base in Germany her husband was stationed at.

It stood to reason for Deedrick that volunteers could be successfully used

by Lacombe FCSS as well.

In the end, she wound up volunteering herself.

“I was told to ‘Step up or shut up’,” said Deedrick with a laugh.

However, she said she was quite pleased to help out.

Before volunteering with FCSS, Deedrick was a member of Lacombe’s Council on Aging in the 70s.

It was that program that eventually led to her being coordinator for the Meals on Wheels program in 1975 and working with FCSS. Deedrick is quite proud of her ac-

complishments while working as coordinator for Meals on Wheels and rightfully so. Today, the program runs more or less autonomously under FCSS but Deedrick said the church delivery system the program now uses was her idea.

When faced with the problem of how to deliver all the meals for the program, Deedrick suggested contacting local churches in Lacombe and asking them to get involved.

Her idea worked and Deedrick said to this day Lacombe’s churches take turns delivering meals for Meals on Wheels.

“It’s worked beautifully all this time.”

While Deedrick was the first ever coordinator of the Meals on Wheels program, she said most of the work she did with FCSS had nothing to do with that program. Instead, Deedrick said the majority of her volunteer work with FCSS regarded her helping fill out applications and forms for seniors.

Deedrick said that there are a number of programs and benefits seniors can apply for once they turn 65 such as old age security, Canada pension and Alberta senior benefits. However, Deedrick added that many of the forms were difficult to understand for the individuals applying.

“All these forms are a little overwhelming for lots of people.”

So, it was Deedrick’s job to get the necessary information from those individuals and fill out the forms for them.

Deedrick said that when she herself needed help understanding the forms, she would call a lawyer, accountant, or another friend who could help explain things to her.

“I learned as I went,” said Deedrick.

“I learned by doing.”

Deedrick said that learning was one of her favourite parts of volunteering and one of the reasons she continues to do it today.

In addition to these jobs, Deedrick sat on the local housing authority, serving for 10 years as director and chair.

Today, Deedrick still volunteers as a board member with Kozy Korner, Lacombe’s seniors centre and has been doing so for about 15 years, she said.

As no one has been with FCSS longer than her, Deedrick added that she still gets the occasional phone call from FCSS workers asking for help on issues.

Excitement builds as Abbey Centre nears opening date Citizens of Blackfalds are eager for the new facility despite some setbacks

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Despite pushing the opening date by a month, excitement is building for Blackfalds’ newest amenity - the Abbey Centre.

Rick Kreklewich, manager for Abbey Centre, said that even though the opening date of the facility, originally slated for February, has been moved to March 7, it is a small setback considering the scale of the project and the community is still looking forward to the Abbey Centre opening its doors.

He added that it is hard to pin down what people are most looking forward to about the new facility.

Mostly, it seems that people are impressed for all the Abbey Centre will have to offer especially consider the size of the town it is located in.

“They are just going to be more impressed as we get closer to opening.”

A few minor issues with the outdoor pool, flooring inside the building and data lines set back the opening of the facility.

However, Kreklewich said he thought that things were going well, especially after the

positive response from the sneak-a-peak event on Jan. 22.

About 800 people showed up to view the Abbey Centre prior to its doors opening.

Kreklewich said several in attendance were impressed by what the facility has to offer and there has been a lot of positive chatter on facebook as well.

Some features he highlighted were the fitness centre, which will include stateof-the-art equipment and the indoor playground, which has a tower-like play structure 28’ high. He said the indoor playground in particular has received a lot of positive comments.

Kreklewich said that it isn’t just inside the inside of the facility people should be excited for, its outside as well. In addition to the field house, indoor playground, running track, fitness centre and other amenities inside the building, there will be outdoor fitness equipment, outdoor playground and an amphitheatre.

“We trying to make it, basically like your one-stop-shop for recreation.”

Recently, the Town of Blackfalds received $50,000 from the Alberta Blue Cross Healthy Communities Grant Program to

go towards the purchase of the outdoor fitness equipment (similar to the kind recently installed around Cranna Lake).

Kreklewich said that while the Town already had the budget for the equipment, the grant will help them keep the cost of the project down.

Construction of the building is nearly complete. Kreklewich said that now it is the finer details that are being worked on

such as the moving in of office furniture, installing of concession and signage in and outside of the building. Final walkthroughs and fire inspections are also still to come.

There are also staff to hire and train.

City to conduct municipal census

The date of April 7 has been declared Census Day by the City of Lacombe.

At its regular meeting on Jan. 27, Lacombe City council voted to conduct a municipal census this spring starting April 7.

Norma MacQuarrie, City of Lacombe chief administrative ofďŹ cer, said that the City is currently using ďŹ gures from the 2011 federal census and administration felt it prudent to update the numbers and use more current data.

The City also attempted to conduct a municipal census in 2012, but did not obtain responses from many of Lacombe’s citizens.

Councillor Reuben Konnik questioned MacQuarrie as to what changes are being made to ensure a similar outcome does not occur again. “We attempted this in 2012 and it was a bit of a debacle,� said Konnik.

In response, MacQuarrie said that a few changes have been made from the 2012 census. This year, the City will be using a program from the City of Airdrie that will allow citizens to respond online instead of just in person through canvassing the City.

She added that the only questions that

are being included relate to demographics, such as questions about age and income. “I anticipate that we will have a much better response rate this year,� said MacQuarrie.

However, even those questions caused concern to Councillor Wayne Armishaw, who said he personally did not share information about his income with anyone other than Revenue Canada Agency and his ďŹ nancial advisors and felt that others may be uncomfortable sharing such details with the City as well.

Councillor Grant Harder wanted to make sure the cost of conducting the census, $38,800, was justiďŹ ed. “Do we stand to gain that back?â€? asked Harder. “Or are we better off to wait a year and let that population grow?â€?

Mayor Steve Christie said that the City estimates it missed 1,000 people during the 2012 census. He said that if those numbers were included in a new census, the cost of conducting the census would be paid for even discounting Lacombe’s growth in the past two years.

MacQuarrie agreed. “It does make a difference,� said MacQuarrie. “Even if it’s only 500 people we will see a difference.�

More u vaccines available for infants Using additional doses of inuenza vaccine secured by Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services will now be offering inuenza vaccine to all children who turned, or will turn, six months of age, on or after Dec. 1, 2013 through to March 31.

Inuenza vaccine also continues to be offered to all children less than nine years of age who received a ďŹ rst dose of inuenza vaccine already this season, and still require a second dose this

season. Children (less than nine years of age) receiving inuenza vaccine for the ďŹ rst time this season require two doses, this season, to be fully immunized.

Parents of children in either of the above noted groups can call Health Link Alberta, or their local Public Health OfďŹ ce, for information on accessing the vaccine for their child.

Although inuenza vaccine is no longer available for Albertans outside of the above noted two

groups, all Albertans are encouraged to continue their vigilance in preventing the further spread of illness in our communities by following preventative precautions: - Cover your cough: cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. If you don’t have a tissue, always cough or sneeze into your arm, not into your hands. Also make sure to throw away tissues after wiping your nose or covering a

cough, and wash your hands.

- Clean your hands: using soap and warm water, wash your hands thoroughly and often, including after coughing, sneezing, using tissues or the washroom, and before eating or preparing foods.

Alcohol-based hand rub or sanitizer can also be helpful if hands are not visibly soiled. Make a point of keeping hands and ďŹ ngers away from your eyes, nose and mouth.

- Stay home when sick: if you have symptoms of inuenza, including fever, cough, headache and extreme tiredness, stay home from work, school, daycare, or any social function.

OfďŹ cials remind people to also refrain from visiting family, friends or loved ones in hospitals, care facilities or seniors lodges, until you have fully recovered from any illness, including inuenza.

ASSAULT IN BLACKFALDS Blackfalds RCMP continue to look for a suspect who assaulted a female last weekend.

On Jan. 25th at 10 p.m. a female was assaulted by a lone male on a pathway in Blackfalds.

The female was grabbed and then punched by the male.

Police say that she was able to turn around and strike the male in the face and knee forcing the male to ee the scene.

The male is described as Caucasian, 17-21 years old, approximately 6’ tall, wearing a green hoodie with blue or black on the sleeves.

The male had dirty blonde or brown hair, longer in length, which that would come down to the suspect’s eye level.

The male will also have injuries to his left cheek and left knee.

Police are asking that if anybody who has dealings with a person that appears like they have similar type descriptors and/or injuries to call the Blackfalds RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

OPINION Health diet fads Once again, the value of education demonstrates itself.

Promoted by celebrities for weight loss and resistance to disease, the rationale behind the popular alkaline diet is being criticized by experts as ‘junk science.’

For those who don’t know, the reasoning behind the alkaline diet is that eating acidic foods, like red meat, can lead to weight gain and detrimental health conditions like cancer and osteoporosis.

So, it’s better to eat more alkaline foods, like vegetables, to prevent such concerns and keep the body’s blood pH balance from becoming acidic.

But experts like Joe Schwartz, chemist at McGill University, says the science behind the diet is taken out of context and doesn’t make sense.

The problem is, you can’t change the pH balance of your body. If you do, your body works on its own to bring it back into the normal range.

You don’t need to eat certain foods to restore your pH balance, your body does that no matter what you eat.

Regardless of what kind of food is taken in, the hu-

man body takes what it needs from it and removes what it doesn’t as waste.

It’s true vegetables are good for you and too much red meat is not, but vegetables aren’t good for you because they are alkaline, they are good for you because most are full of nutrients, high in fiber and low in fat. By the same token, red meat is not unhealthy because it is acidic, it is only unhealthy when consumed in large quantities without other important food groups, like vegetables.

It’s not uncommon for sound scientific explanations to be taken out of context and used to explain such health fads.

Take vitamin supplements for example.

It is no secret that vitamins are important to maintain a healthy body.

Many doctors will suggest taking a daily multi-vitamin to ensure that people get all the vitamins and supplements they need to do so. However, the health benefits of such supplements are often exaggerated.

As mentioned above, the human body is constantly working to maintain a healthy balance of nutrients, vitamins and all the

other substances found in the body essential for survival. In essence, the human body wants to stay in a kind of equilibrium.

When it needs things, the body will take them out of the food we eat, air we breath, some things are even absorbed through the skin.

Likewise, when the body doesn’t need things, it gets

rid of them by expelling them as waste.

Vitamin D for example is an important ingredient in building strong bones and maintaining a healthy immune system. However, only those with Vitamin D deficiency benefit from taking Vitamin D supplements.

New research suggests that there are little to no

health benefits to taking Vitamin D for those who are not deficient. In fact, according to professor Karl Michaelsson of Uppsala University in Sweden, it may even be harmful.

It is best to consult your doctor if you feel you need to take any kind of supplement. If not, your body is just going to waste it anyway.

Experts at Kaspersky, the computer anti-virus software company, believe the new trend among hackers is moving to targeting mobile devices and smart appliances. Why is this, you ask?

Well, because the security on these devices isn’t as up to speed as on home computers.

Therefore, it is easier for hackers to get personal information from these devices than from the other electronic devices that have been around longer.

Unfortunately, this is kind of the

way technology works.

The newer something is, the less familiar it is and therefore the easier it is to exploit.

Therefore, the second new technology becomes available, someone is already hard at work devising a way to use that technology to steal your information.

This isn’t something new that has just been born out of the digital age either.

Since printed money existed, counterfeit money has existed as well.

Still to this day, whenever the Canadian Mint releases a new design for a bank note, cases of counterfeit bills go up astronomically within the first year the bills are used.

What is most disturbing about this revelation is that people don’t know that it is happening.

Security attacks, scams and phishing operations aren’t something that is overly common yet

and thus people aren’t overly familiar with it yet.

But according to Kaspersky, it is happening and it is becoming more and more common.

According to Kaspersky, Android phones are more at risk than iPhones, but iPhones aren’t immune to attacks or at least attempted ones.

I myself received a scam email to my iPhone 4S recently. It looked pretty convincing too, but was still not without any telling sign of unauthenticity.

The email I received claimed to be from Canada Revenue Agency and stated that my tax refund for $615.47 could be claimed if I would only enter my social insurance number into the below field.

It even had the official Government of Canada logo and Canada Revenue Agency letterhead.

However, I received it on a Sunday at 6:17 a.m., when no Canada Revenue Agency offices are open. I

also have yet to submit my income tax claims for 2013 as it is only January and I don’t even have all the forms necessary to do so yet. Finally, the email asked for my SIN, which Canada Revenue Agency already has and would have been on my tax claim forms had I sent them in.

So, as always, vigilance is the watchword.

When you use mobile phones for banking or the transferring of other sensitive information, only do so from secure networks.

Do not save login information or keep web pages open and never EVER exchange any personal information via email before confirming who the information is being sent to first.

If you suspect you are being targeted by a scam, discontinue contact with the suspicious party immediately and notify police as soon as possible. news@lacombeexpress.com

Town of Blackfalds to put lid on recycling

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Blackfalds Town council has voted to continue the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for new waste and recycling carts in order to replace the current recycling containers with larger carts.

Preston Weran, director of infrastructure and property services for the Town, brought the issue to council again because, while the correct collection costs were brought to council at the Feb. 12, 2013 meeting, at the recent budget workshop administration did not indicate that there would be an increase in collection costs by switching to carts.

Weran said this is true for waste carts, but not recycling carts and stated administration wanted to ensure council had all the information regarding the cost of the program prior to moving forward and sending out RFP packages for the supply of carts.

Weran said the additional cost would be $26,544 for 12 months at 79 cents per recycling pickup at 2,800 units.

However, because the phasing plan administration had planned to implement would minimize delivery costs, the actual cost would be approximately $13,272.

When asked by Councillor Dean Wigmore if this addi-

tional cost would mean higher utility costs for residents, Weran said it would not. Instead, that cost would be absorbed through growth.

The earlier decision to move from current waste and recycling containers to carts was made in an effort to be more environmentally responsible. Weran said that the new containers would eliminate problems of material blowing around the Town and animals getting into garbage.

Weran added that the reason for the increase in cost was that the current contractor charges less for recycling pickup as there is less contamination with the current blue box recycling containers than the recycling carts. He added the reasoning for this is that blue boxes can be sorted at the curb upon pickup, something that will not be possible with the carts.

As such, Councillor Richard Poole was curious as to why the type of container was being changed if the current blue box is better for collectors and cheaper to pickup. “If it isn’t broken why are we fixing it?”

Weran said the carts are cleaner, are less likely to blow over in the wind and therefore less likely to have their contents spill.

While Poole admitted he has seen some evidence of recyclables blowing around because of the open blue

boxes, he argued such occurrences were minimal and therefore the Town should continue using the boxes instead of the carts, which would make it easier for pickup.

Mayor Melodie Stol disagreed.

“Our current blue box system is an open bin and people put loose newspaper, loose film, loose plastic and whatnot in them,” said Stol. “And when it blows, when the wind blows, (those items) come out of the blue box and blow through the neighbourhood and you see it again and again and again.”

Stol added that Blackfalds’ most recent windstorm convinced her more than anything that council was doing the right thing by changing the container type.

Councillor William Taylor made the motion to continue with the RFP process, saying the new program would make it easier for Blackfalds residents to recycle and therefore should limit the amount of garbage from residents as well.

Parcel may be too small for rezoning

At its regular meeting earlier this week, Lacombe City council gave first reading to an amendment of Land Use Bylaw 300 which would re-designate a small parcel of land at 4902 Beardsley Ave. from medium density residential (R4) to maximum density multiunit residential (R6).

sity residential building.

However, as the parcel of land is quite small, Kirchner added that based on rough calculations done by the planning department, any residential building built on it would likely contain less than 12 units.

“It would be a very small apartment building, it would not be a very large scale development,” said Kirchner.

Councillor Peter Bouwsema agreed that the parcel of land was quite small for any R6 development and expressed his confusion as to why anyone would try to develop it as such.

“I’m trying to understand why they would even consider doing this. It is so small, it just seems a waste of time.”

Kirchner said that rezoning the property would also shift the zone from discretionary use to a permitted use. She added that she believed this may have been the developer’s rationale behind the application.

Councillor Grant Harder stated his concerns about how any R6 development would be on the smaller parcel while its parent parcel remained R4. He added that, with the maximum height of the building being four storeys and being able to contain 12 units at the absolute most it may not be a very desirable option.

Council voted 6-1 in favour of giving first reading to the amendment with Harder voting against. A public hearing has been set for Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. news@lacombeexpress.com

Recalling wild weather in Lacombe’s early years In 1872 the British magazine Scribner’s Monthly commissioned Christina Rossetti, an English poet, to compose a Christmas poem.

FREDEEN Her response was the poem In the Bleak Midwinter. This poem was later set to music by Gustav Holst and became a Christmas carol after its inclusion in the 1906 English Hymnal.

One line of this carol ‘Snow had fallen, snow on snow’ provides an apt description of the weather Alberta has been experiencing in 2013-2014.

This weather pattern will seem unique to many, but old-timers will tell you “We’ve seen it all before.”

As a starter consider 1887 when Charles Russell sketched the most eloquent statement of a truly epic climatic interlude.

That was the winter of ‘86 and ‘87.

An eyewitness account stated that “The first cold front hit in November.

More storms followed in December. A foot and a half of snow fell between Thanksgiving and Christmas. What little hay they had, most ranchers fed to their horses. In the meantime, the cattle drifted from the frozen high ranges to the bottom land and the sheltered coulees.

“The only food there was was willows. The first chinook arrived in January, with just enough warming to melt the snow on top.

Then it turned cold. On February 3 and 4 one of the worst blizzards in memory set in. The snow crusted.

The chinook had succeeded in sealing the ground with a layer of ice which hooves could not penetrate.”

In gray and brown and black colours, Russell painted a single steer with a Bar R branded on its hip.

It was standing in deep snow, horns crooked and eyes hollow. Its backbones and every rib were showing.

Russell titled his 1887 painting Waiting for a Chinook (The Last of the 5,000).

Canada did not have a Russell to provide a graphic record of that winter or of those that followed but written records indicate that the same scenario, repeated for several winters during the ensuing decade, and covered a wide ranging sweep of the western grasslands along with the interior of B.C. and Alberta.

Books by Stenger (Wolf Willow) and Robert David Symons (The Broken Snare) tell this story for the entire rangeland across the prairie provinces.

A more personal story was related by my mother who came from Nebraska with her mother and siblings in September 1906 to join their father on his Saskatchewan homestead north of Weyburn.

The first snowflakes were sifting down as they rode the wagon.

By morning the sod house was buried in snow.

So was the barn. The door which had been left open for the cattle was now hidden under a huge snowdrift but inspection via a hole cut through the roof showed that all the cattle

were safe inside.

Only the two oxen were missing and it seemed likely that they had drifted ahead of the storm. Hay from an adjacent stack was pitched through the hole, the snow at the door provided an adequate source of water but blowing snow discouraged any thought of searching for the oxen.

That would have to wait.

But the weather was unrelenting.

Search for the oxen was abandoned. The family inside the house kept spirits high with music, reading and storytelling and a tunnel dug through drifts gave access to the nearby food storage shed. When food supplies dwindled neighbours joined forces for a trip to Weyburn for flour and other necessities.

A one-day chinook in early April released floods of water. It was followed by a series of blizzards that continued into early May.

They had been assured the climate here was reasonably uniform, that snowfall ranged from none to several feet, that snow would be gone by April followed by fine weather for seeding crops, a great growing season and a harvest period of six to eight weeks during which there would be no rain.

Roe’s journal entries verified this weather pattern during the years 1896, 1897 and 1898. However, this came to an end at harvest time in 1899 when a mid-

Indeed the winter of 1906-07, so memorable elsewhere in the west, was mentioned by only one Lacombe pioneer.

His memory was of the cold, the snow, the blizzards and the scarcity of feed for livestock. But that was the only complaint voiced.

Fortunately there was one individual whose journal did provide a detailed weather record of this period beginning with his homestead years in 1896.

Under a clearing sky the weather turned exceedingly cold ushering in a cold spell that continued to April. Spring finally came, the snow disappeared and a splendid summer followed.

The long wet cycle was over. This was two years before the epic winter of 1906-07 and no local accounts have been found to fill that gap.”

Just because it’s disposable doesn’t mean it’s flushable Did you know that flushing the wrong things down your toilet can damage the wastewater system, cause sewer backups in your home, and sewage releases into the environment? The only thing you should ever flush down a toilet is human organic waste and toilet paper.

Here is a list of some things to keep out of the toilet: • automotive fluids • bandages and bandage wrappings • cotton balls and swabs • condoms • dental floss • disposable diapers • facial tissue or cleaning wipes of any kind • mini or maxi pads • paint, solvents, batteries and other household hazardous waste • sanitary napkins • tampons and tampon applicators Do not flush unused or expired medications down the toilet. You can safely dispose of medications by taking them to an approved prescription drug take-back location – usually the local pharmacy.

Watch for curious toddlers hovering over the toilet bowl and flushing jewelry, golf balls, toys or electronic items.

The Alberta Government developed a public warning system as a result of the 1987 tornado that struck Edmonton and the surrounding area. This system, called Alberta’s Emergency Public Warning System (EPWS) was created in 1992. This system warns the public of imminent danger. The EPWS was the first rapid warning system of its kind to use media outlets to broadcast critical life-saving information directly to the public.

Enforcement Services advises motorists to be mindful of the posted speed limits when driving through school and playground zones in the city. During schools days (from 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.) the speed limit in school zones is 30 km/hr. Outside of those times it is 50 km/hr. The speed limit in playground zones is 30 km/hr, and is in effect every day of the year, from 8:30 am to one hour after sunset.

Canadian Pacific (CP) is a crucial link in a continental transportation network. It’s timely, competitive rail service moves Canadian goods to market and delivers the products we use in our homes every day. CP must operate around the clock in order to meet these customer requirements and remain competitive.

CP does its best to be a reasonable neighbour, but people living near the railway must expect to see and hear a certain amount of activity from its operations. If you have any questions or concerns regarding train traffic or railway crossings, please contact CP’s Community Connect Line at 1-800-766-7912.

Freight trains do not run on a set schedule like passenger trains do - trains operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

They can run at any time, depending on what customers need and changes in business cycles. On some branch lines you may see only one or two trains a week, while busy mainline corridors can have more than 30 trains a day.

If the demand for a commodity goes up you can expect additional trains to handle the volume, the opposite if demand decreases.

CP is also responsible for maintaining their right-of-way.

In most areas, the right-of-way extends approximately 50 feet from the center of the track on both sides. If there are concerns regarding a particular right-of-way please call the Community Connect Line, who will forward them to the track maintenance supervisors, or the CP Police Service as the situation warrants.

Motorists are also reminded of the recent speed limit change on 50 Avenue (Highway 12) – from 53 Street to Highway 2A. The weekday speed limit on this stretch has been reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The speed limit goes back up to 50 km/h after 6 p.m.

What’s New Improved Residential Construction Standards Take Effect The City of Lacombe, like all municipalities, is required by law to enforce all safety code requirements handed down by the Province of Alberta.

Effective April 1, 2014, all new residential development within Lacombe will be subject to improved construction standards. Previous exemptions offered under Section 9.10.15.4.(1) of the Alberta Building Code will no longer apply. Depending on the side yard setbacks, the improvements may affect the type of construction material required for side walls and whether side windows will be permitted.

MECKLER I have witnessed many clients who want a certain feel or function for their space but then seem to get talked out of it by others. Who are these others and what power of influence do they have over you? Do you value their opinion so highly that it changes how you live in your home or are you just scared to design something out of

the ordinary? A dear friend of mine just revamped her kitchen, she has always had fabulous taste and this new colour scheme is no exception.

When she posted photos online I noticed that her kitchen table was gone and sitting area complete with cozy loveseats was in its place!

My first question was where is your table? Then I thought about the times I had been to her home and the easy and fun way she hosts a party and I thought yup, this is the perfect place for loveseats!

Unconventional yet perfect for her style of entertaining and the family-focused person who makes time with her children a priority. She has created the ultimate hang out/chat with me as I prepare dinner space right in her kitchen.

No more searching for the teenagers in the home, they are probably right there with her.

My sister recently turned a third bedroom into a walk-in closet/dressing and make-up area in her home. I have always held onto my bedrooms with an idea that they must stay bedrooms yet when I have seen this conversion it is always very appealing. Rather than space that is used only a few times per year, why not have a private retreat that you can use on a daily basis?

If extra beds are needed from time to time a Murphy bed is a great idea for those overnight guests while still giving you a closet space beyond your wildest imagination. My sister-in-law has Murphy beds in every bedroom in her home for ease of cleaning which I think is a brilliant concept - no more dusty spaces that can’t be reached with a vacuum.

How about a sleepover room? If you have tweens in your home and an extra room, this would be a perfect opportunity to cre-

ate a fun and fantastic spot for the gang to all get together. Instead of traditional beds, opt for floor throws and beanbag chairs.

Include a table for playing games and don’t forget a mini-fridge and popcorn maker!

Cool lighting is essential, this could be your place to play with design and let your inner party girl show through.

Dimmers, multi-coloured lighting and all the latest technology for docking iPods and playing video games is a great addition to a room of this function. Play with colour and textures and don’t be afraid to add neon and glow in the dark elements for that extra punch of cool.

It may be time to break out of your own box, look at your rooms with your family function in mind and be brave and radical and change an unused or traditional space into something wonderful.

ARTS & LEISURE Cast eager to bring popular comedy to Lacombe

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Walter Learning is happy to be in Lacombe and excited to get to work.

Learning, a longtime friend of Cow Patti Theatre Artistic Director AnnaMarie Lea, has been recruited by Cow Patti to direct Perfect Wedding, Cow Patti’s next production opening Feb. 13.

He said Perfect Wedding is a great play that he is looking forward to working on. “It’s wonderful,� said Learning.

Perfect Wedding is a play written by Robin Hawdon. It tells the story of a young man who wakes on the morning of his wedding day to ďŹ nd himself in bed with a woman he doesn’t know, nor recollects meeting ever before.

Learning said it is a farce he is looking forward to directing.

He said most farces revolve around doors, with the action and comedy of the show coming from doors opening, doors closing, people coming through doors, people being chased through doors and so on. Case in point, in Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii, there is a hilarious scene where most of the cast chase each other through the set’s many doors and all end up in the closet.

However, Learning said that Perfect Wedding is different.

Instead of doors, the comedy comes from language, character and very clever dialogue, added Learning.

Lea said she chose the play because it has a well-written script and excellent characters. She added that the subject matter of the play ďŹ t in well with its timeslot, as it will open the night before Valentine’s Day “I think the audience will have fun with it,â€? said Lea. Lea ďŹ rst met Learning in the 1980s while she was just beginning her acting career.

She did a general audition for

the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre company of which Learning was artistic director.

While she never got a call from Learning for a part, Lea was cast decades later in a production of Out of Order with Learning.

Learning admitted he didn’t remember Lea, but they became friends and ran into each other often throughout their careers.

Learning was actually offered a role in Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii, Cow Patti’s last production.

However, he declined in order to play Kris Kringle in a production of Miracle of 34th Street by the Theatre New Brunswick, the company Learning founded some 40 years ago in his home town.

So, now Lea has brought him on as director for Perfect Wedding. She said she hopes this production with Cow Patti will be Learning’s “First of many. “He is here now and I’m just absolutely thrilled,� said Lea. Having a viable career in acting for over 60 years is impressive for anyone, but perhaps more interesting for Learning given that he has macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration is a condition that leads to loss of one’s central vision. As such, Learning is not able to drive and has great difďŹ culty reading.

Learning ďŹ rst became aware of his macular degeneration about six years ago when his son pointed out to him that he tended to hug the center line while driving.

Subsequently, Learning went to see his optometrist and discovered he had the beginning stages of the condition.

Years later, Learning was driving in QuÊbec when he noticed he couldn’t quite read some of the road signs properly. He didn’t really need to, as he knew the route so well, but decided it would be safer if he stopped driving.

That was three and a half years ago, and Learning said he hasn’t driven since.

However, Learning seems to

DifďŹ culty seeing has done little to impede Learning’s career as an actor or director.

He has simply found ways around obstacles like reading scripts.

At ďŹ rst, Learning was still able to read using powerful magniďŹ ers and enlarged print.

As his condition progressed however, he began to experience letter fragmentation while reading.

Now, Learning uses a text to

voice program on his computer to ‘read’ scripts.

When he gets a script, Learning enters it into the program and his computer will read the script to him. Also, because he can’t act and read from a script for the ďŹ rst few rehearsals as many actors do, Learning makes sure to memorize all his lines prior to the ďŹ rst rehearsal.

When it comes to directing, Learning depends a bit more on other members of cast and crew than directors with unhindered vision might.

For example, Learning said he simply has to trust lighting designers that the lighting is proper

for the scene and creates the right mood.

While he doesn’t have very good central vision, Learning said he still has great peripheral vision and is able to see what actors are doing on stage without much difďŹ culty.

He added that he doesn’t always need his sight to be able to do his job. “I can’t see well but I can still smell bad acting,� joked Learning.

Cara Luft brings folk collection to Red Deer Feb. 1

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Singer/songwriter Cara Luft is one of those delightful people whose joy in what she does overflows on virtually every level.

The amazingly talented folk songstress plays Fratters in Red Deer on Feb. 1.

She had an early start with honing her musical skills – raised by folk-musician parents in the heart of the passionate traditional music community in Calgary, she was steeped as a youth in a setting of spiritual music, house concerts, folk clubs and festivals. She got her start at age four playing autoharp and dulcimer in her family’s band.

But things got even better.

A whole new world opened up when her parents gave her an acoustic guitar and she discovered Led Zeppelin.

An accomplished guitarist not to mention a captivating singer, she also knows how to keep her audiences engaged -- Luft’s shows flow with engaging, witty stories and powerful original and traditional songs.

Her career as a musician developed organically, although she quit university after three years – she was studying education – and firmly opted to pursue music full time.

Her latest solo CD, Darlingford, is a stunning collection of songs drawn from her life experiences.

The CD was released in 2012, but hasn’t been wide-

ly introduced to Canadian fans via touring as Luft has spent lots of time overseas.

Audiences across Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and England are loving her unique sound, but she’s thrilled to be back on home soil.

“I’m working on a new record right now, but this tour is in support of Darlingford,” she said. “I did a lot of overseas touring and just a little Canadian tour with the record, so it’s a treat to go back out again and share songs and stories from Darlingford, and play some of the new material as well.”

A co-founder of folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys in 2002, Luft headed out on her own in 2004.

Her critically acclaimed CD The Light Fantastic, recorded following her departure from The Jennys, drew praise from across North America, Europe and the UK. Meanwhile, on top of touring overseas last year, Luft was also chosen to represent Canada in a musical collaboration project between Canada and the UK, alongside British artist Bella Hardy, a project spearheaded by Folk Music Canada and the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

It’s been an amazingly creative experience. Hardy came to Canada last year to work with Luft – the two had never met and weren’t really familiar with each other’s music. But they clicked, and Luft will head to England in October for

“Bouncing ideas back and forth is very therapeutic.”

As for her own new project that is in the works, she’s finding the theme of ‘home’ surfacing as

the songs take shape. She admits that she’s feeling pretty tired these days, so the idea of home – and the comfort and peace that represents – is on her mind.

“I’ve been without a home since Christmas 2012 and it’s something I long for. It’s interesting to see how that desire has crept into my ideas for songs.”

But hitting the stage still has a way of energizing her like nothing else does. She really can’t imagine a different path.

Chip dips for Super Bowl Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner, and although I am not a big sports fan, one cannot help but be inundated by the media that this annual game day is fast approaching.

COOKING Almost everyone loves dip with snacking chips, so I am giving you a couple of our favourite recipes. Ok, the salsa is not officially a ‘dip’ but it is still great and I wanted to give you a healthy option as well. Don’t buy pre-made store bought dips and salsas when you can make your own much better. These are both best with tortilla chips, but you can choose your favourite dipper.

I hope these recipes will enhance your game watching enjoyment along with your other snacks and appetizers. I will, at least, be tuning in to watch the halftime show.

Artichoke & Asiago dip 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup drained minced canned artichokes

50g grated Asiago cheese, approx. 1/2 cup 1/2 to 1 garlic clove, crushed to a paste 1 tsp. lemon juice 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. liquid honey 1/2 tsp. sweet smoked paprika, optional Mix everything together and serve with crackers or tortilla chips.

Makes approximately two cups.

Fresh cut salsa “By rinsing and draining the diced red onion, the onion flavour won’t be overpowering, but will still provide nice colour. Omit the seeds and white membrane from the jalapeno for a milder salsa.”

3 large Roma tomatoes, diced small 1 small yellow bell pepper, diced small 1/2 long English cucumber, diced small 1 cup small diced red onion, rinsed and drained 1 jalapeno, diced very small 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed Juice of one lime 1 tsp. sugar Salt & pepper to taste Fresh chopped cilantro, to taste Mix everything together and enjoy!

SPORTS Preparations for Boston Pizza Cup nearly complete

This time next week, the best curlers in the province, as well as some of the best in the world, will be convening on Lacombe for the 2014 Boston Pizza Cup. This includes two of the biggest names in men’s curling, Kevin Martin and Kevin Koe. Both Martin and Koe are former BP Cup Champions, former World Champions and Martin even has an Olympic gold medal under his belt.

“Some of the best curling in the world is going to be showcased here,” said Boston Pizza Cup Chair Don Gullekson.

On Feb. 5, the kickoff for the Boston Pizza Cup is planned. There will be a morning draw to determine the seeding of the bottom eight qualifiers, then the opening banquet lunch and finally the opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m.

Organizers have also strived to make the BP Cup an all-ages event.

Gullekson said they are proud of the ‘Kidzone’ portion of the event which will see 500 schoolchildren coming to the event to watch some curling and also partake in the Rocks and Rings program which will be put on for their benefit.

“It’s a way of promoting curling,” said Gullekson. He added that Kidzone will also have some prizes and giveaways for its young participants and that some of Lacombe’s junior curlers will be participating in the Boston Pizza Cup opening ceremonies as well.

Ice for the Boston Pizza Cup will be built in the Lacombe arena tomorrow. If all goes well, it will be ready to curl on by Monday, said Gullekson.

Once the ice is in, Lacombe Curling Club members will have a chance to play some ends in order to test the ice and see if any adjustments need to be made.

This is a great time for Lacombe to be hosting the Alberta Men’s Curling Championships, said Lacombe Curling Club Manager Mandy Peakman.

With 2014 being an Olympic year and curling an Olympic event, the Boston Pizza Cup and curling draw more exposure than they would otherwise.

“There is always more interest (when it is an Olympic year),” said Peakman.

“Olympics has really improved the world’s view on curling.”

There is more than just world-class curling happening at the BP Cup as well.

Every night will feature different entertainment in both the Owl’s Nest VIP Lounge and White Owl Whisky Lounge.

To kick things off, Molson will be hosting a ‘beer and cheese’ night on the evening of Feb. 5. Gullekson said that Molson will be onhand with their trademark beverages and the Molson Girls will be at the Owl Whisky Lounge. “It’s kind of a fun night to kick the week off.”

In addition to the Molson beer and cheese night on Wednesday, there is a Ladies Night Wine and Cheese event on Feb.

Gullekson added that effort has been made to book local, Central Alberta artists for entertainment during the BP Cup and that they will be performing almost continuously during the event.

“There’s some stuff happening all the time,” said Gullekson. “So we are hoping that people come and participate in all of it, not just the curling.”

Both Peakman and Gullekson mentioned that one thing event organizers would like to promote is that there is assigned seating for the Boston Pizza Cup. Unlike most events at Lacombe’s arenas,

tickets purchased will have a section, row and seat number.

There are still lots of tickets on sale for the event, though seating choices have diminished.

Gullekson said that tickets will be sold at the door as well but purchasing ahead of time is encouraged to ensure best choice of seating.

Bantam A Rockets lose tight game to Bashaw

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express While the game was close, a win just wasn’t in the cards for Lacombe last Thursday night.

On Jan. 23, the Lacombe Bantam A Rockets lost to the Bashaw Stars 3-2 in back and forth game.

Coach Wesley Cross said the Stars are ranked higher than the Rockets and he was impressed with how his team played.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way they played. They played awesome.”

The game was close right from the beginning and the two teams kept pace with each other easily.

Lacombe opened up scoring for the game but were overtaken by Bashaw who scored two points to end the period 2-1 in their favour.

In the second period, the Rockets pressured the Stars, pressing them into their own zone and allowing them more than a few near goals. Bashaw did a good job defending their lead though, matching Lacombe’s attacks with their own, but not quite good enough.

Towards the end of the period, the Stars began to tire, allowing

the Rockets more control of the puck and the game and leading to a goal to tie up the game 2-2 at the end of the second.

Coming into the third, the Stars had seemingly lost the apparent fatigue from the previous period and showed they were eager to gain the lead once again. While the Rockets continued to put pressure on the Stars and take the fight to the their end, pressure in Lacombe’s own defensive zone led to passing mistakes that allowed Bashaw quite a few shots on net.

Goaltender Dusten Hoogkamp did a great job saving most of those shots, making 31 saves throughout the game in total.

But he wasn’t quite fast enough to catch one that came up just over his glove halfway through the third. It would make the score 3-2 for Bashaw and be the gamewinning goal.

With seconds left in the game, Cross decided to pull Hoogkamp in favour of another skater, only to have play re-enter the Rockets’ defensive zone once Hoogkamp was on the bench. Time ran out, saving the Rockets from an empty

net goal but Cross said that in any case the risk was worth it.

“A loss is a loss,” said Cross.

“Whether you lose 4-2 or 3-2 it’s the same thing.”

Bashaw and Lacombe have met twice before this season. Each time before, the score was 4-2 with the Rockets winning once and Lacombe winning once. Cross said that while Bashaw is top in the league and Lacombe second from the bottom, all the teams in the league are fairly evenly matched and games are always close.

Passing was what brought down the Rockets in the end, said Cross. He added that weak passing has plagued the team all season.

On the other hand, Cross said the team did a great job of getting possession of the puck back once they lost it and it was clear that the Rockets were not afraid to get aggressive and use the body to do it.

While Lacombe demonstrated strong hitting in the game against Bashaw, Cross said it is still something they need to continue working on as the post-season draws near.

He added other teams in the league have demonstrated even stronger hitting skills and Lacombe will need to improve to compete with them.

While the Rockets were not afraid to hit or be aggressive, they also showed great discipline.

Even though there were numer-

ous penalties to both sides and a bit of rough play, Rocket players seldom retaliated to give their team a disadvantage.

Cody Dennis’ memory kept alive through memorial hockey game

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express For the 10th year running, Blackfalds Minor Hockey will pay tribute to former hockey player Cody Dennis by playing the game he loved.

This Saturday, Blackfalds will host the 10th annual Cody Dennis Memorial Hockey Game.

Brenda Dennis, Cody’s mother, said that were her son around to see how he is being remembered and how much support there is for the event even after 10 years he would be impressed.

“I think he would be pretty happy,” said Brenda. “It’s overwhelming what a little town has done.”

Cody was an avid hockey fan and player growing up.

He played minor hockey in Blackfalds until there weren’t enough players to form a team. After that, Cody moved to play with Lacombe Minor Hockey.

As a young adult, he continued to play hockey in local rec leagues. However, Cody’s hockey career was cut short when he was killed in a collision while riding his motorcycle.

At Cody’s funeral, Brenda was approached by Cody’s former hockey coach, saying he wanted to do something to honour Cody’s memory. Thus, the Cody Dennis Memorial Hockey Game was born and has been held every year since. Now, each year, Cody’s former teammates on the 1998-1999 Blackfalds Bantam Bulldogs hockey team return to Blackfalds to play in a fun game to remember their friend and teammate and raise money for Blackfalds Minor Hockey.

Brenda said this is a great show of support as many of those team members no longer live in the region or even the province.

“It’s unreal that those guys still take the time to come down to the game.”

She added that that the first few years the game was held the team played a local rec team but, as some of the rec players are getting too old to play, the opposing team in more recent years is usually made up of various minor hockey coaches and officials.

In the last two years a new tradition has been introduced to the game, she said.

against one of the younger current Blackfalds Minor Hockey teams.

Brenda said this is usually a fun game and a lighthearted way to remember her son. She added that it will often involve some mock penalty calls against the goalie of the older Bulldog team, which was Cody’s position, with the goalie even serving the penalty himself in the box.

During one of the intermissions of the game, the Cody Dennis Memorial Award is traditionally presented.

This award is presented to the team in the oldest division of Blackfalds Minor Hockey to a player who demonstrates sportsmanship, team spirit, hustle, enthusiasm and leadership. However, Brenda said that as this year’s oldest minor hockey team, the Bantam Bulldogs, are playing in an out of town tournament the same weekend, the award will not be presented at the game this year.

The Cody Dennis Memorial Game is very well attended and even received the attention of Kraft Hockeyville a few years ago, said Brenda. She added that as a fundraiser for Blackfalds Minor Hockey, the event usually raises between $4,000 and $5,000. news@lacombeexpress.com
