SUV into two police cars and injuring a pair of Surrey RCMP officers on Monday has been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Police are alleging that James Burton Weaver, 47, intentionally tried to hit them and/or their cars.

Tryouts for zone teams for the B.C. Winter Games were staged Jan. 3-5, and 13 players from the Falcons have been selected to play in the elite tournament for under-16 female players.

There were roughly 50 players from across the Fraser Valley competing for the 20 positions on the Fraser Valley (Zone Three) team, and more than half the roster will be comprised of Falcons.

Mackenzie Brown, Sophia Christopherson, Emily Duchak, Emily Laroue, Nicola Murray, Danika Pasqua, Alicia Perez, Jessie Sanghe, Priya Sidhu, Sadie Stoppler, Mya Taylor and Tessa Younger will wear the light blue uniforms of the Fraser Valley team. Brown, however, will miss the Games due to a recent injury.

Shona Bal, a Falcons player who resides in North Delta, will play at the Feb. 20-23 B.C. Winter Games in Mission with the Fraser Delta (Zone 4) team. BC Hockey selects the zone teams as part of its Female High Performance Program.

A female Mountie was inside the first car, while a male officer was on foot. The officer in the car suffered soft tissue injuries, a haematoma to her left shoulder and a torn rotator cuff. The officer on foot was pinned between the two police cruisers, but sustained only a minor injury to one leg. Both were taken to hospital and have been released.

Weaver’s girlfriend Kathy Labinsky told CTV News he had recently gone off medication for depression.

“He said that he was feeling good so he didn’t think he needed them, so he quit taking them and then you could see the instant decline,” she said. “He needs professional help, medication, probably some counselling. This has been building up for a while. I could see this coming. I was afraid of where it was going.”

Weaver has previously been convicted of possession of a controlled substance and assault, among other things, but Labinsky told CTV he had cleaned up his act in recent years, receiving an award for turning his life around.

Court rejects B.C. class size law – again Premier Christy Clark says government will likely appeal judge’s opinion

vincial government’s effort to keep class size and special needs support off the bargaining table with teachers, and ordered the government to pay $2 million in damages to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF).

In a ruling released Monday, Justice Susan Griffin said the B.C. government’s replacement legislation, passed in 2011, is as unconstitutional as the 2002 law called Bill 28 that removed class size and special needs support from union working conditions.

“The court concluded that the government did not negotiate in good faith with the union

after the Bill 28 decision,” Griffin wrote. “One of the problems was that the government representatives were preoccupied with another strategy.

Their strategy was to put such pressure on the union that it would provoke a strike by the union. The government representatives thought this would give government the opportunity to gain political support for imposing legislation on the union.”

The ruling strikes down the portions of the new legislation that have not already expired.

BCTF President Jim Iker said the ruling returns contract language that was in place in 2002, and he expects that the province’s 60 school districts will have to rehire teachers and special needs assistants to reduce class size.

“It’s good for us, it’s good for public education, it’s good for British Columbia and for our students,” Iker said of Monday’s ruling.

Premier Christy Clark told reporters Tuesday that ministry staff will study it, and that her government will likely appeal the decision.

Education Minister and Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender is “disappointed” by the ruling, saying he disagrees with the judge’s conclusion the government tried to provoke a strike.

His focus is on reaching a new agreement.

“What we need to do is to review the judge’s ruling in detail to see what the implications are, but clearly my message to school districts, to parents, is it’s business as usual in our schools,” Fassbender said.

Alicia Price guilty of attempted arson

lit a police car on fire during the 2011 Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver has been sentenced to three months in jail.

Alicia Price, 24, was identified after videos and websites sprung up online following the riot. One video showed a clip of someone alleged to be Price, leaning inside the back of a police cruiser, holding a lighter to the seat upholstery.

Surrey’s Police Committee met last Monday (Jan. 20), and nearly the entire meeting was held in-camera, in the absence of the public.

Newton resident Laila Yuile said it’s unfathomable that the city would conduct all that business behind closed doors.

“If you look at the City of Vancouver, their police board meetings are open to the public,” said Yuile, who blogs on local political issues.

Coun. Barinder Rasode, chair of the police committee, agrees too much is being discussed behind closed doors.

Coun. Linda Hepner says there have been very few occasions on the committee where the in-camera matters weren’t too sensitive to discuss publicly. She also feels any public matters discussed behind closed doors was inadvertent.

Put the phone away when you’re behind the wheel

n February 2010, distracted driving legislation came into effect in B.C. The purpose for the new law was to make our roads safer. In 2010 alone, there were more than 100 fatal crashes directly related to distracted driving, cellphones being the biggest distraction of all.

Here in Delta, we have seen some horrible collisions caused by people talking or texting while driving. While I will not get into any details of those crashes, I can say that there are widows and children who will not see a partner or parent again because someone was careless behind the wheel.

I will never forget one particular crash. An innocent victim sat in his vehicle and watched as a distracted driver in a larger vehicle drove straight towards him. He had no way of escaping and was killed by the impact. I often wonder if he knew he was going to die and what his last thoughts were.

Jim I will be frank in saying that driving while using a cellphone is selfish and ignorant behaviour.

Cellphone distractions increase your odds of a crash by 23 per cent, which means you are also increasing the odds of killing somebody else.

We have changed our mindset around impaired driving, however we do not seem to understand the perils of distracted driving.

Here in British Columbia, we have some of the toughest penalties for impaired driving in the country, including driving suspensions

and vehicle impoundments. These have had a direct impact on alcohol-related deaths, with over a 50-per-cent drop since the implementation of Immediate Roadside Prohibition.

Perhaps we need to consider something similar for cellphone use.

The reality is that distracted driving is as deadly as impaired driving yet we have not changed our behaviour. Instances of distracted driving are on the rise and police enforcement, including a $167 fine, does not seem to be enough of a deterrent.

In 2013, Delta police handed out twice as many distracted driving sanctions as we did for impaired driving.

We owe it to each other to avoid distractions while driving.

Put the cellphone in a place where you cannot see it and if you need to talk on your phone driving, install a handsCessford while free device. There is no excuse for texting while you operate a motor vehicle – if it’s that important, pull over to the side of the road.

Eventually, distracted driving will be regarded with the same severity as drinking and driving. I just hope to see our habits change before too many more lives are put at risk.

Good teen trumps trash RECENTLY I reported to the City of

Surrey that a number of bags containing garbage had been dumped in the habitat rehabilitation area of Robson Park.

When I was walking my dog through the park I saw someone clearing up the contaminated area.

Much to my surprise it was a young teenager who had taken the task upon himself. He said that he passed the place each day and didn’t like seeing the mess.

Well done Christian. You give me hope for the future.

Dangers, benefits to energy ideas SOME TAXPAYERS are not thinking

of the positive sides of what pipelines can do for them financially. If the pipelines do go ahead, large royalties will be paid to the B.C. government, which is really us.

B.C. taxpayers could have a few options: eliminating the provincial sales tax or medical premiums, or even receiving an annual royalty cheque.

In Alaska, the Alyeska pipeline has provided the average citizen an annual cheque of $1,108.45 a year for 30 years. It’s better than buying lottery tickets.

Some people ask, what about the risk of an oil spill? But these same people get up every morning and do not know what will happen to them.

Going on a vacation? What if the plane goes down? You might have a car accident. Some of us have jobs that can end in an accident. Our health can suddenly deteriorate.

In summary, we all take chances every day. So why not take the benefits of the pipelines?

Pharmacy points ban survives its first challenge

loyalty reward points on prescription drug purchases has survived the first stage of a court challenge launched by major pharmacy chains.

Sobeys West Inc. and Jace Holdings Ltd. – parent firms of Canada Safeway and Thrifty Foods – had

sought an interim court injunction suspending the ban but that was rejected last week by B.C. Supreme Court.

A full hearing of the College of Pharmacists of B.C. bylaw prohibiting loyalty programs on pharmaceuticals begins Jan. 31.

New Westminster police say an unresponsive man was found on a bus, but when he was woken up by fire and ambulance personnel, he became combative. They restrained him until police arrived, and police say they found a loaded .40 calibre handgun in his jacket. David Allen Geoghegan, 23, has been charged with possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

The companies argued there was no evidence and only speculation that reward points might be a threat to the health of vulnerable patients.

Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson rejected Canada Safeway’s claim it would suffer “irreparable harm” due to loss of revenue and customers to competitors if the loyalty points ban was allowed to remain in place pending the hearing.

The court did not accept the big pharmacies’ claim that loyalty programs pose no threat.

“The fact that there has been no documented harm to the public from customer loyalty programs to date does not mean that the risk of harm is non-existent,” Hinkson ruled.

The college has suggested some patients might go without medicine in order to wait and refill a prescription on a day when a special points bonus is offered.

Hinkson said the pharmacy chains appear to have answered that concern by pledging not to offer unusual loyalty point bonuses on particular days.

Canada Safeway has also lodged a complaint about the loyalty rewards ban with the federal Competition Bureau.

A MAN HAS won an

appeal of his fourmonth jail sentence for hitting a woman so hard in the face at a South Surrey party that she required surgery, and will instead serve two years probation.

Dayne Walter Jones had his prison sen-

tence set aside in B.C. Supreme Court Jan. 10 and posted online Tuesday.

He was initially sentenced to jail in September 2013 for punching and injuring Melissa Tocheri after pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm six months earlier.

In his appeal, Jones

argued the trial judge failed to take into account that he was a first-time offender when imposing a prison term and didn’t consider whether a conditional sentence order was appropriate in the case.

The incident occurred in June 2011 after Jones met Tocheri at a club in Surrey. Both were

consuming alcohol, “the appellant to excess,” reads the court decision. They and their friends left the club to go to a late-night party at a house in South Surrey.

Jones was in a car with Tocheri and her friends. On the way, the two began arguing about directions and Jones got out of the car.

nterstate 90 bisects Washington State horizontally, connecting Seattle to the state capital Spokane at the eastern edge. At roughly halfway is a small city called Moses Lake. Before construction of the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River in 1941 and the Larson Air Force Base the following year, the newly incorporated—in 1938— town of Moses Lake, population 301, was a subsistence fishing and farming community. But when irrigation using the dam waters was established by 1955, it grew into a transportation, agricultural and recreational hub.

In recent years, the old air base is the Grant County International Airport, a jet training and testing facility used by the Boeing Company, the US military and NASA and, in terms of area, one of the largest airports in the US. Then, in 2010, these two infrastructures—the airport and the dam with its power generating capacity enticed BMW and the SGL Group, in partnership, to begin constructing in Moses Lake, a $100 million carbon-fibre manufacturing plant.

In announcing this joint venture, the partners described the plant as “an important element of [their] strategy to commercialize viable manufacturing of ultra-light weight carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) for use in future vehicle concepts.” BMW said it planned to use the fibres in its upcoming ‘Megacity Vehicle’.

The SGL Group website detailed how the Moses Lake facility would fit into the

various stages of CFRP production: “The raw material needed to manufacture carbon fibers, a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based precursor, will be produced by a joint venture between SGL Group and the Japanese company Mitsubishi Rayon (MRC) in Otake, Japan. … Next … the facility in Moses Lake will convert the polyacrylic fibers into the actual carbon fibers.” “(Carbon) fibers are processed into lightweight carbon fiber fabrics at a second joint venture site in Wackersdorf, Germany.

The CFRP parts and components will then be made from these fabrics at the BMW Group Plant in Landshut, Germany. The assembly of the Megacity Vehicle will take place at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig, Germany….”

Four years later, BMW has begun series production of its ‘i3’ all-electric hatchback.

Generally the engineering discussion around electric vehicles focuses on the drive train— the range, torque, re-charging time and the cost-benefit. But in this case, the story is also about the innovative carbon fibre body designed to make this car “lighter, more efficient, more sustainable, and more suited to developing ground-up new vehicle designs.”

BMW says “it will make the i3 … safer.” A safety video describes the vehicle testing process as “torture… Batteries and high voltage systems are perforated by nails, crushed, overheated, and dropped from heights, and submerged in a water tank. The car’s protective skins will also mean fewer dings and scratches in parking lots.” Good news indeed.

Tocheri and her friends arrived at the house and Jones came with his friends shortly after.

The two argued further and Jones spat on Tocheri before punching her once on the left side of her face, knocking her to the ground.

Jones then left the scene.

The punch fractured the Tocheri’s orbital bone and she required surgery. She told the court she still suffers from numbness in the area, though does not have visible scarring.

Jones was 25 at the time of the offence and is now 28. He had no prior criminal record and the appeal decision says the offence appears to have been “completely out of character.”

Prior to the incident, Jones, who is an avid baseball player and youth coach, was experimenting with steroids to improve his performance.

In retrospect, he realized the drugs caused him to become irritable and quick to anger and he stopped using them. He also attended an anger management program and counselling sessions.

Justice Gregory Fitch said under the circumstances, two years probation would sufficiently deter and denounce his actions.

Jones is also required to complete 100 hours of community service by the end of the year.

Fitch said Jones represented no ongoing risk to the community and seeks to make amends for his actions.

“His actions in this regard, including the steps he took after the offence but prior to the imposition of sentence, are, in my experience, unusual and much to his credit,” said Fitch.

Jones will still have a criminal record.

A DRIVER who struck and killed a White Rock father

delivering newspapers with his teenage son threeand-a-half years ago has been granted day parole.

Following a hearing Jan. 16, Allan Simpson Wood – who has served seven-and-a-half months of a two-year jail sentence for causing the death of Bryan McCron and attacking Connor McCron – was given permission to live at a halfway house for the next six months.

Officials considered factors including Wood, 40, has been assessed as a low risk to reoffend, has the support of his girlfriend and family members, has accepted responsibility for the crime and demonstrated “what appeared to be genuine remorse.”

Wood pleaded guilty last summer to assault and dangerous driving causing death in connection with the July 19, 2010 incident that killed McCron.

The court heard that Wood’s Chevy Silverado struck McCron’s Toyota Tercel as the McCrons were delivering newspapers in the 15300-block of Colebrook Road.

McCron, 49 years old and one week away from getting married, suffered a severed aorta in the crash and died later in hospital. The court also heard that Wood pushed Connor McCron and punched him in the stomach as the then-17-year-old called 911.

At the parole hearing, Wood told the board he assaulted the teen because at the time he blamed the victims for the crash. It occurred after Wood had been drinking with a friend at the beach, the board’s report states. (Additional charges – of impaired driving causing death and failure to provide a breath sample – were stayed).

In granting day parole, the board imposed several special conditions on Wood and he must also follow any treatment plan arranged by his parole supervisor.

The 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat.

This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beautiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment.

Looks I can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. Because of standard AWD and other packaging changes, the starting price is higher than direct competitors, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder. Both those vehicles have a base model that starts around $30,000, the Durango, in contrast, starts at $39,995 and tops out at $51,995. This Citadel model, with options, is over $60,000.

Verdict This latest Durango is yet another example of what Chrysler is doing right.

It is loaded with the latest technology, has a class leading 8-speed automatic, attitude and room to spare. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be coming to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently equated hybrid vehicles to early amphibians that hopped out of the oceans, learned to survive on land and eventually disappeared.

Ironically, if the electric vehicle (EV) evolved in a similar way, Tesla (an exclusively EV company) wouldn’t exist right now and this would probably be in a vibrant Hybrid Age! Despite the early birth of production EV, hybrid (HEV) and now plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales continue to rise, new models continue to arrive and at least three all-new PHEVs are expected later this year.

A HEV functions just like, or similar to, a conventional gas-engine vehicle, from a driver/owner perspective. It consumes substantially less fuel, especially in an urban environment, and a regenerative braking system can greatly extend the life of brake friction pads.

A PHEV increases the energy saving, money saving, and greenhouse gas reducing advantages by tapping into an electrical source and pulling relatively inexpensive electrical power off the main grid. It then uses this energy to go further on electrical power alone.

How far depends primarily on the capacity (size) of its storage battery, but also on the drive system, the terrain and weather conditions and how the PHEV is driven.

Lugging around a bigger battery obviously increases the weight of a PHEV and it takes up either passenger cabin or more likely trunk cargo space. The latest lithium-ion battery packs are lighter and more compact, but the space sacrifice is something that a prospective owner must be willing to live with.

Hybrid owner feedback is generally very positive and the fuel savings can be substantial. That said, you generally pay a premium

Choosing HEV or PHEV boils-down to whether an owner can take full advantage of the plug-in electrical storage feature and normal driving commutes are within the electric-only speed and distance range of the PHEV. The KPU Eagles women’s team lost 88-40 to the Capilano Blues Friday night, then fell 66-57 to the Quest Kermodes.

Their won-lost record fell to 4-10, a game behind the 5-9 Langara Falcons.

Shilpa Khanna led the team in scoring both nights with nine points against Capilano and added another 15 against Quest. The rookie guard and a graduate of Fleetwood Park Secondary ta llied eight steals on the weekend. Christina Brown totaled 22 points in the two games with Amber-Lee Kavanagh grabbing seven rebounds in each contest.

The schedule gets more difficult for the Eagles next weekend, as they will host the first-place Vancouver Island University Mariners (14-0) Friday night at 6 p.m. and the second-place Camosun Chargers (104) Saturday at 1 p.m. at KPU’s Surrey campus.

The men saw their record fall to 2-12, two games behind sixth-place Camosun. The Eagles lost 89-62 Friday to Capilano and 96-64 to Quest on Saturday.

pair of road games on the weekend, the Surrey Eagles are still searching to secure the last playoff spot in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland Division.

On Friday, the Eagles travelled to Trail, where they shut out the Smoke Eaters 3-0, but Saturday in Salmon Arm they saw their road-trip record fall to .500, after a valiant comeback fell just short in a 5-4 loss to the Silverbacks.

After the 1-1 trip, the Eagles (19-26-1-1, won-loss-tied-overtime loss) sit where they have nearly the entire season – in fourth place in the Mainland Division, 11 points back of the Coquitlam Express, who were the latest team to clinch a post-season berth.

The first-place Langley Rivermen and secondplace Prince George Spruce Kings punched their ticket to the playoffs earlier this season.

Though they haven’t officially clinched, it’s still likely the Birds will be post-season bound – they remain 14 points up on the last-place Chilliwack Chiefs, with 11 games to go in the regular season.

Against Trail, Surrey scored two power-play markers, the first of which came off the stick of Brian Drapluk; the goal was the blue-liners’ first of the season.

In the second period, the Eagles doubled the lead when Chase McMurphy finished off a passing play with the Smokies down a man, and Nathan Renouf – who scored the overtime winner in the Eagles’ last game before the road trip – added a third goal in the final frame.

Devon Fordyce was between the pipes for the Eagles, stopping 31 shots on net to pick up his first shutout of the year. The Alberta native was especially strong early in the game, when Trail peppered him with 14 shots on goal.

Valley West rallies for split Matt Bradley tallies five points in 6-4 win Sunday

league-leaders on Saturday night, the Valley West Hawks rebounded by knocking the Vancouver Giants out of top spot Sunday afternoon.

The Giants, tied with the Okanagan Rockets for first place in the BC Hockey Major Midget League before their two-game set with the Hawks, trounced Valley West 9-1 in Burnaby Saturday. But the Hawks handed the Giants just their fifth loss of the season the next day at the Langley Events Centre, scoring three

unanswered third period goals for a 6-4 victory.

Okanagan, which won twice on the weekend, takes over sole possession of first place with a 25-4-1 (won-lost-tied) mark, followed by the Giants at 24-5-1. The Hawks are in third at 20-11-1, three points up on the 17-11-4 Vancouver Chiefs.

The Giants led Saturday’s game 2-0 after just seven minutes of play before Jesse Lansdell of Langley scored what would be the only goal of the game for Valley West.

Vancouver would extend their lead to 3-1

after 20 minutes, and 4-1 after two periods before scoring five times in the third period.

They picked up where they left off Sunday in Langley, scoring three times in a span of seven minutes for a 3-0 lead by the first intermission.

Valley West regrouped, and outscored the Giants 3-1 in the second frame. Surrey forward Matt Bradley scored twice, once on the powerplay and again when shorthanded, and also assisted on an evenstrength tally from Davis Koch of White Rock.

Koch also assisted on Bradley’s two goals.

In the final period, Cloverdale’s Jordan Funk tied the game two minutes in, Langley’s Eric Callegari notched the winning with 10 minutes to play, then Surrey defenceman Paul Savage scored an insurance goal with five minutes left on the clock. Bradley added another two assists to his total, finishing the game with five points.

Valley West will play twice against the ninthplace Fraser Valley Thunderbirds next weekend, facing off in Abbotsford Saturday afternoon before a home game at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Langley Events Centre.

A funny fork in the road Becky’s New Car, the latest offering from Surrey Little Theatre, takes a look at one woman’s attempt to steer her way to happiness

veryone – well, any adult, anyways – has been there, to some extent.

Life progresses and changes. And questions arise about whether this is what life was meant to be. What have I done so far? What will be next? Is it enough? Am I happy?

Surrey Little Theatre’s (SLT) latest comedy, Becky’s New Car, tackles the highly relatable themes, taking the audience on one woman’s journey as she veers off the road she views as her mundane reality.

“It’s a good story about what a woman can go through when faced with her hum drum life,” says director Marko Hohlbein, fresh off last Langley Players’ production of That Darn Plot last fall.

When a grief-stricken millionaire wanders into the car dealership where Becky works, she’s lured by the glimmer the chance at a new life offers.

“It’s about all the stuff that goes on in our lives and what keeps up steady and going, you know, keeps the rudder in the water. And then all of a sudden, somebody presents us with an opportunity for a little excitement, a little something different and we take that little tiny step and the next thing, we’re drawn right Marko Hohlbein intoForit.”Becky, the chance at a new life sends her, rather unintentionally, into a complicated – albeit humorous – double life.

“It’s a case of how far you go,” says Hohlbein. “In the case of Becky, she stuck her foot in the pool but didn’t quite go for the deep dive.

“We’ve all looked at our lives and looked at the pasture over there that looks a little greener… until we get over there and realize it’s full of holes.”

Playing the protagonist is South Surrey’s Robyn Bradley, who won a best actress award for SLT’s 2012 production of Mending Fences. She’s confident the plot will strike a chord with pretty much anyone.

“I think that maybe people don’t actually act in the way that she (Becky) acted, but I think people are often presented with those kinds of choices in life. Everyone can relate to what she’s going through at some point in their life.”

The comedy was what drew Bradley to the role, but the attraction to the lead part wasn’t immediate.

“I actually read the script and it starts with about a six-page monologue. I looked at the monologue – I didn’t read it – and I went ‘well, I’m out. I’m folding my cards right there’,” she giggles. “Then the actor in me started to see how it would start to formulate and how I would do it.”

Presenting a unique challenge for the actress is the interactive aspect of the play. The so-called fourth wall is broken down by Becky within the first two minutes, inviting the audience to partake in the action.

The prospect is both thrilling and terrifying for Bradley, who has no prior improvisational experience under her theatrical belt.

Her tactic: “Try to stay loose and relaxed and let go of fear. When you’re loose and relaxed, it creates freedom and space.

“In theory it’s great, eh?” she laughs. “I’m in the airplane right now about to skydive.”

Hohlbein says while the uncertainty can be daunting – you never know what an audience member might say or do – it’s a gift to be able to

engage the viewer in such a distinct way.

“It’s one of those things where you let the audience into the magic,” he says. “You bring them there and allow the story to unfold.”

Also noteworthy is the challenge of staging a story that takes place in four separate locations.

Hohlbein says the effect is achieved mostly through lighting, which helps demonstrate the feverish tempo inherent in juggling two existences.

“Poor Becky in the second act has to be in three different places at the same time,” says the director.

“It shows the frenetic pace it takes to live that dual life.”

That leaves Bradley running, literally, from scene to scene, attempting to keep pace with her character’s various conversations.

“It’s what the playwright intended,” she says.

“Her life’s unraveling and she’s not able to keep up with the facade. I’m enjoying the opportunity and hoping I make it work.”

Also featured in the play, which opens tonight, are Terry Thomas, who plays Becky’s husband Joe, as well as Philip Hale, Ken Boyd, Laura Luongo, Harry Pering and Cindy Peterson Good.
