A deficit budget and declining enrolment are forcing the Alberni Valley School District to look at closing multiple schools and reconfiguring grades in the next two years.

Superintendent Cam Pinkerton laid out the dire picture at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

The district needs to find $800,000 in savings to compensate for declining enrolment, as well as increased Hydro costs and wage increases.

Declining enrolment and subsequent per-student funding is also a factor forcing the move, Pinkerton said. The district has 1,300 fewer students now than it did when it last closed schools in 2003 — the equivalent of 53 classrooms.

While he was disappointed to hear the car sat outside for so many years, he is happy that Koszegi is having it restored.

“It warms my heart. I don’t have a pang of regret that it’s not mine. I’m overjoyed,” he said.

Last month the Porsche 912—now dubbed Valdy, in honour of its previous owner—was shipped to a converted airport hangar at Boundary Bay Airport, where RWM & Co. will undertake the car’s restoration.

Koszegi was given permission to drive the Porsche off the ferry and into the airport. He is excited about this renovation.

The rest would be reconfigured to K-7 and 8-12 models. The plan is to be brought back to trustees for discussion and adoption at their meeting in March.

Even if adopted, school can’t be re-configured next year but would be phased in some time in the near future, Pinkerton said.

The plan will be unveiled to the public in a series of guided discussions to be held at Alberni District Secondary School starting next week, Pinkerton said.

The district voted not to close schools in 2013. “But anything we didn’t do will be compounded,” Pinkerton said. “Next year we need to do something.”

The district has cut programs and services and reduced staffing.

“Do we continue to cut programs and services or do we look at facilities,” Pinkerton said.

After the meeting, Pinkerton said the district’s surplus is depleted and programs and services have been cut to the bone.

“We’ll be into the bone soon,” he said.

Re-configuration will save the district

$1.5 million annually, Pinkerton said.

When asked if the high school can absorb Grades 7-8, Pinkerton said yes; enrolment is expected to decline by 200 students over the next two years.

Other configurations were examined but K-7 and 8-12 best fit the Valley by balancing out North and South Port, he said.

No scenario is being discounted, he added.

“The elementary schools are being looked at and the board office is on the table.”

One theory he discussed with the News after the meeting was moving elementary school students into the two middle school

facilities: AW Neill and EJ Dunn.

That type of scenario could see some of the schools re-purposed and held in reserve if the Valley sees an economic or population upswing, Pinkerton said.

The linchpin in the plan will be how many students can be fit into the middle schools, Alberni District Teachers’ Union president Ken Zydyk said.

Port Alberni city councillors are one step away from giving themselves a raise.

Council voted 5-2 on the first three readings of a remuneration and expenses bylaw at their Jan. 27 meeting.

If the plan is adopted after fourth reading of the bylaw in February then Mayor John Douglas will be paid $38,500 per year, which is an increase from $32,900 last year. Councillors will be paid $17,000, an increase from $13,160 last year.

The raises wouldn’t take effect until April so the cumulative total for all of council would only cost $28,500 this year.

The initiative was brought up last year and penciled into the 2014 budget: if approved it will be underwritten with $60,000 to $70,000 left over from track resurfacing work,

as well as a $10,000 donated by the AV Track Club.

Anderson said he wanted clarification of what happens to surpluses incurred on city projects, and what the city’s policy is on penciling projects into budgets.

Watson replied that capital project

surpluses are rolled into general revenue and serve to decrease taxes in the following year.

As well, that it’s not unusual for projects to drift across to the following year’s budget. The project is part of the 2014 budget deliberations, Watson explained.

Real Estate Straight Talk Let me begin by wishing you all a belated Happy New Year! Today I'm going to recap what happened in the market in 2013, and give my professional opinion of what may be in store for 2014.

The real estate market last year started out slow, and I remember not feeling overly optimistic. As the year progressed the market seemed to slowly gaining momentum. There were two surges in sales in the year, both tied to increases in mortgage rates, causing buyers in the market to make decisions more quickly than they otherwise would have. By late summer, early fall, the market had really picked up momentum, and our team remained very busy right into the New Year.

That was my overall impression of 2013; now let’s look at the stats. In 2013, 640 single family house listings were reported, in the Alberni Valley, by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board. In comparison, there were 263 houses reported sold. The median sale price was $205,750. The average days on the market, for those houses that sold, was 77 days.

In comparison, the year before 716 listings were reported, and there were 261 houses reported sold. The median sale price was $206,250.

The average days on the market, for those houses that sold, was 85 days.

My interpretation is that the market was relatively flat, but showing slight signs of becoming healthier. The mean sale price dropped nominally, while units sold were up nominally. Meanwhile, the numbers of listings on the market decreased by approximately 11%, moving supply and demand towards a more balanced state.

Predicting markets is a risky business for a Realtor, and I am not an Economist. However, the title promises to give it to you straight, so here goes. I expect that we will see flat prices in 2014, with a mild increase in unit sales, and a continuation of the closing of the supply/demand gap.

This January has been the busiest I have experienced in several years. While that is not enough for me to say we have pulled out of this low market just yet, I am cautiously optimistic about the future!

Bad timing for pay hike Tug of war for transportation taxes Public office can be a thankless job, especially around budget time.

So running for public office is a big commitment for someone. You need to have a strong dedication to your community, a love of public speaking, belief in what you’re doing, and both the courage to stand up for yourself and thick skin for the ensuing defence.

‘How do And you have to know they expect going in that the job is to pay for low paying and hard.

You’ll never make a wage a decent living as a increase?’ career politician at the municipal level.

While we agree that public office should be open to anyone, not just someone with a fat salary, we do not agree with the pay raise that city council is poised to approve.

It has been past practice that any city council in Port Alberni considering a pay raise would ensure that any raise would not come into effect until after the following election.

While we’re sure employees in other lines of work would love to give themselves raises—and that’s never going to happen unless those people are self-employed entrepreneurs—the optics don’t look good for a city council telling residents their property taxes are going to go up again.

How do they expect to pay for a wage increase on one hand while they’re calling for service cuts on the other?

We agree with Coun. Cindy Solda’s suggestion that an outside committee examine whether an increase to remuneration is necessary for our mayor and council.

ICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark has set off a storm of protest by imposing a referendum on new Lower Mainland transportation improvements, timed with the province-wide municipal elections on Nov. 15.

Even if you don’t live in Metro Vancouver, you’re not immune from this long-running saga.

Provincial and federal governments use your tax dollars for the big stuff, including the SkyTrain Canada Line to Vancouver airport and the South Fraser Perimeter Road, a new truck route to port facilities at Tsawwassen.

Clark has promised a bridge replacement for the George Massey tunnel under the Fraser River, which may or may not be tolled like the Port Mann bridge. The patchwork of Lower Mainland tolls is a growing political

liability for the B.C. Liberal government, and if further tolls are avoided, major works elsewhere in the province may be delayed as the budget is eaten up by the big cities.

Clark announced the Massey tunnel replacement in a September 2012 speech to the Union of B.C. Municipalities.

In the same speech, she also pledged to complete the four-laning of the last 240 km of the Trans-Canada Highway from Kamloops to the Alberta border.

That’s one of the most mountainous stretches of highway in Canada, and the province’s cost was estimated at the time to be $650 million over 10 years. Time will tell if that promise is kept.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone inherited the mess left behind by former minister Kevin

Falcon, who took transit authority away from Metro Vancouver politicians.

He appointed a board of experts and set up a toothless “mayors’ council” to rubberstamp their decisions, after forcing through the Canada Line ahead of a long-promised transit extension to the east.

Local politicians wrangled for years over that eastern extension.

They finally settled on surface light rail, only to be overruled by the province, which wanted the vastly more expensive SkyTrain.

The latest rebuke to the mayors’ council was when they decided not to proceed with a costly new electronic fare card system. Falcon reversed that one after taking a junket to London and falling in love with their “Oyster card” subway

system. All the glitches from TransLink’s new “Compass card” program will be encountered this summer, just before those mayors go to the polls to face voter wrath.

Speaking of reversals, Stone is now demanding the mayors come up with their list of priorities for new projects. They are expected to believe their choices won’t be overruled again.

Stone correctly notes that Vancouver wants SkyTrain on Broadway, Surrey wants new surface light rail, and other Lower Mainland communities want new road and bridge works. Local governments have a long history of parochial squabbling, getting their pet projects done and then suddenly developing the urge to rein in spending once it’s time to dig deep for their neighbours.

Lower Mainland taxpayers are weary and confused by all this in-fighting. Many likely believe that it is their regional government that has imposed bridge tolls.

I received an e-mail recently from a contact asking me to sign a petition hosted at Change.org and titled, “Don’t let Canada Post end door to door delivery.”

The petition’s author

suggested that people use social media to spread the word.

Is it not ironic that a person seeking others to participate in a petition for the retention of doorto-door delivery of letter mail would do so by the use of electronic mail? With the click of a mouse, a person or business can distribute, nearby

or half a world away, a document to thousands of electronic “mail boxes” within seconds.

Communication by e-mail, text messaging or other social media tools is ubiquitous because it’s fast and convenient. Canada Post cannot compete with that. Petitioning Canada Post to retain

a service model that incurs high expense, and that faces rapid decline due to the high rate of adoption of electronic delivery of documents, is misguided.

Concern has been raised that it will become difficult for seniors living in cities, who have sidewalks and streetlights available for them, to

gather their mail from a community mailbox; this likely doesn’t resonate with seniors living in rural areas who have visited their community mailboxes without sidewalks and streetlights for years.

Fear that people living alone will be further isolated after losing the regular contact by a letter carrier, is overdone.

Use of traditional mail will remain in some form, as there will always be some documents that must be transferred between parties in their original format, not as electronic copies. Most Canadians, if they haven’t already, will choose to receive the majority of their mail electronically, with the

rest at a community mailbox.

Change is not easy for everyone, and many are comfortable with the way things are. But societies themselves, and the infrastructure that helps them thrive, are constantly evolving.

Cessation of mail delivery to your door is a result of that evolution.

Council raise ‘a money grab’: Taxpayers’ Federation WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A key factor in Port Alberni city council’s decision to raise their pay is the amount of the average stipend paid to councillors in cities of similar size.

Those communities may be similar in size to Port Alberni, but a closer look reveals cities with varying resources to tap into.

A report to council by city manager Ken Watson served as a backdrop for council’s initiative. Watson said he drew on a bulletin from CivicInfo BC that analyzed council pay by population and region in B.C. Specifically, Watson

gathered information at council’s request about communities with populations between 10,00025,000. At 17,000 Port Alberni’s population is in the middle, therefore the range was a good benchmark for comparison, the report noted.

According to the report, remuneration for Port Alberni’s council is $14,000 behind municipalities of similar size: $8,000 for mayor, $5,000 for council. The maximum mayors’ stipend was $78,000 while the minimum was $21,000.

The average was $41,000.

For councillors, the maximum stipend

ANALYSIS was $31,000 and the minimum $9,000; the average was $17,000.

Three of the communities looked at as part of the report included Pitt Meadows (pop.

17,000), Courtenay (pop. 25,000) and Parksville (11,000).

In Pitt Meadows, the average single family home has an assessed value of $450,000. The annual property tax paid on that home is $1,698 plus utilities.

The city collects $16 million for all property taxes.

Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters’ salary is adjusted

to 75 per cent of the published median salary of all Metro Vancouver mayors for the preceding year.

Councillors make 37.5 per cent of the mayor’s salary.

Council salaries are reviewed by an independent committee each year.

In Courtenay, the average single family home has an assessed value of $279,000. The annual property tax paid on that home is $2,343 including utilities. The city took in $22 million in property taxes in 2013.

Courtenay council’s remuneration was last reviewed in 2010 and no changes were made.

In Parksville, the average single family home has an assessed value of $302,000. The annual property tax paid on that home is $2,600, which may include taxes collected for other bodies.

The city collected $11.3 million in property taxes for 2013 not including collections for other bodies.

By comparison, the average single family home in Port Alberni with an assessed value of $189,547 paid $1,667 in property taxes last year. And the city collected $20 million in property taxes in 2012.

Kuu-us Crisis Service is set to run its ‘Saturday Night Outreach’ indoors starting Feb. 1, director Elia Nicholson-Nave said.

The program will run at Echo Centre from 5:30-7 p.m. on Feb. 1 and March 1, 8 and 15. It will also run at the same time at Echo Field House on Feb. 8, 15, 22 and also on March 22 and 29.

The married mother of two’s journey to the Alberni Valley began in Toulouse, France, where Subra-Bieusses was born in 1972.

She was getting a lesson in the art form that would eventually give her creativity an outlet — photography.

Her father, JeanClaude was a hobby photographer, and tutored his daughter without her realizing it at the time.

“I always remember him with a camera in his hand,” she said.

Her first camera was an early model Canon that used film.

Subra-Bieusses graduated from high school in 1991 and pursued postsecondary studies in economics and accounting at Universite Toulouse No. 2.

She worked a

series of jobs after graduating and also met her husband Fred.

The couple have since had two children: Thomas, 17, and Gauthier, 11.

While living in Dax, France, she learned the finer points of photography from a friend who was a landscape photographer. She furthered her interest by taking workshops, poring over books and honing her craft.

Meanwhile, her husband was involved in the oil and gas industry and jumped on an opportunity in the industry in Calgary in 2006.

Subra-Bieusses found and started taking courses in photography at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and started her own business there in 2009.

Life was good in Calgary but SubraBieusses missed being by the ocean.

One bad Durango in a good way The 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat.

This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beautiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment.

Looks I can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be coming to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better.

The redesigned 2011 Grand Cherokee was still unmistakably a Jeep, even though it came with an all-new chassis and body.

It was offered with an impressively wide range of basic hardware choices that included three 4x4 systems, an optional Quadra-Lift air suspension system and two engines.

The standard engine is a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and other than some early production line glitches, (see recalls) it’s a pretty reliable, fuel efficient modern unit.

A big improvement on the previous 3.7 V6, the 3.6 V6 features 24-valves and variable valve timing and can produce 290 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque.

And fuel economy is rated at: 13.0/8.9 L/100 km (city/ highway).

That’s considerably better than the optional 5.7-litre V8 hemi engine, which is rated at 15.7 L/100 km in the city and 10.6 L/100 km on the highway. The pulling power (390 lb-ft of torque) of the big V8 engine, however, helps to more than double the potential towing capability of the Grand Cherokee, from 1588 kg to 3266 kg. Both engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Laredo and Laredo X trim levels come with Quadra-Trac I, a full-time 4x4 system that distributes drive 48/52 front-to-rear, but no low-range is provided. Quadra-Trac II was optional on Laredo X and standard on Limited and Overland. This system is capable of sending 100 per cent of drive to either the front or rear axle and has a selectable low range, which is important for demanding off-road use.

Then there’s Quadra-Drive II. This was optional on the Laredo X, Limited and Overland and adds an electronic limited-slip differential that can concentrate up to 100 per cent of drive to a single wheel. It also comes with Hill Descent Control and Hill

The optional (Quadra Lift) air suspension can lower or raise (to a maximum of 27 cm) the ride height. It has a Park Mode that drops to its lowest (making it easier for passengers to get in or out) and an Aero Mode that automatically lowers the Grand Cherokee at highway speeds for improved aerodynamics and stability.

In addition to being a more rigid platform, the new chassis gave Grand Cherokee a 13 cm longer wheelbase and a new independent rear suspen-

sion. High-speed handling and highway ride comfort, particularly for rear seat passengers, was noticeably improved.

A new top-line SRT edition of Grand Cherokee, with a 6.4-litre V8 hemi engine, was added for the 2012 model year. A six-speed automatic transmission also replaced five-speed automatic with the 5.7-litre V8 and a U-connect hands-free phone feature became a standard on all versions.

No significant changes were made for the 2013 model year and the big news for

2014 is the introduction of a diesel engine edition plus a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Students and teachers in School District 70 will soon feel the effects of a BC Supreme Court ruling that has restored class size and support language to collective bargaining agreements, Alberni District Teachers’ Union president Ken Zydyk said.

Zydyk was responding to Monday’s BC Supreme Court ruling that retroactively restored class-size and support language that was stripped from collective bargaining agreements in 2002.

“It’s ironic that the ruling came down on the anniversary of when the legislation was first enacted,” Zydyk said.

The court also ordered the province to pay the BC Teachers’ Federation $2 million for its unlawfully extending the unconstitutional prohibitions on collective bargaining

Recognizing the court ruling is one thing but funding its impact is another, SD70 trustee Rosemarie Buchanan said. “The province is likely going to tell us to find the money in our existing budgets.”

Local landscape and seascape artist Sally Walker’s exhibit of acrylic painting runs until Thursday, Feb. 6.

Townsend’s type of woodwork is called intarsia, which literally means “a mosaic in wood”.

It is also referred to as “painting in wood”.

Townsend’s exhibit will run from Feb. 8 to March 7.

This is an exhibit for everyone who loves the look and feel of wood. An artist’s reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 15 from 1-3 p.m. in the gallery.

Abbeyfield starts year with plan for future A

bbeyfield board and staff members inaugurated the new year with a working session to discuss their “state of the union” and plan for the future of this independent-living Valley home for seniors.

And, although the residents were not in attendance at the strategic planning meeting, their feedback with comments on their social environment, the building, volunteers, staff services, etc., were heard at the meeting, as notes that had been taken with their opinions on their wellbeing and quality of life, were read.

The Abbeyfield strategic planning meeting was held in order to: “set goals for the desired future; develop a way to achieve those goals, and; what to do, why to do it and how to

Among the various topics discussed, the following highlighted the meeting: residents’ well being; wait list; demographic (aging); staffing issues (confidentiality); policies; financial issues; short and long-term goals; building upgrade and maintenance; the need for more volunteers; equipment, etc.

“Our five-hour meeting with the board of directors and senior staff set the tone and clarified our vision and mandate for Abbeyfield well into the future,” president Marlene Dietrich said in summing up the meeting.

“The discussions were insightful, proactive and compassionate.

Everyone took an

active part and presented thoughtful opinions and ideas for consideration”.

She added that the board and staff’s commitment to serving seniors who may be lonely, and who no longer want to cook and clean and do yard work but who are able to live independently, can take part in the friendly companionship and

activities available at Abbeyfield.

Dietrich expressed appreciation to everyone for their participation and continued dedication to making this home such a wonderful place to live.

She added that “we are clear about the problems we may face financially in the future due to rising costs, and will take steps to ensure that we remain diligent.”

The board of directors is responsible for providing a safe environment, nutritious meals and clean and sanitary surroundings for all residents.

Residents are responsible for keeping their part of

this communal home clean and safe, and to be civil and respectful of their fellow residents and staff.

Because Abbeyfield does not provide nursing or housekeeping services, the residents are responsible for keeping their own room clean, doing their own laundry, looking after their own medical needs, perhaps with their family’s assistance, and generally, being almost as capable as they would be living in their own home or apartment.

(The services of Home and Community Care to help with personal care and medications can be arranged by the individual resident or

his/her sponsor.)

The principles that guides this organization are that the elderly still have an important role to play in the lives of their families, friends and communities; and many elderly people everywhere suffer from loneliness and insecurity and so need care, companionship and practical support in their daily lives.

It is important to point out that Abbeyfield believes in the principle that the social interaction of the residents in their home, with their family, as members of the community and with their work on common projects, are important components of their milieu.

JAMES ALVIN HOLBORN May 27, 1932 – January 16, 2014 James A. Holborn, 81, of Port Alberni, BC passed away at West Coast General Hospital on January 16, 2014. He was born in Hinton Trail, Alberta May 23, 1932 the son of Mary and Robert Holborn. Jim was pre-deceased by his parents and siblings Floyd, Erena, Frederick and Hugh. Victor Holborn, his wife Lyn and nieces and nephews are the remaining Holborn family. His wife, the love of his life, pre-deceased him November 5, 2012. He has five stepchildren, LaVerne Dunn, Gerald Danyluk and wife Gale, Tyrone Danlock, David Danyluck and Nicki Rooker. He has six step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

For a short time, Jim served in the Canadian Air Force and became an Army Reserve Sergeant Major in Edmonton. After being discharged from military service, he embarked on several jobs from raising tropical fish for Woodward’s, selling appliances for Sears, making foam pillows in Vancouver to retiring from the Weyerhaeuser Port Alberni Pulp Mill steam plant, June 1, 1997.

Jim was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Arrowsmith Lodge #53 since 1993. He also served the community as a Citizen on Patrol and volunteered for the Port Alberni Summer Olympics.

He was a man of many interests, such as collecting pins, reading, playing his guitar, creating bonsai plants, astrology and the spiritual realm.

Jim loved nature and animals. He always had a joke to share on line and verbally.

Our step-dad or, as he loved to be called by grandchildren, PaPa Jim, will be sorrowfully missed as he continues his journey in life.

Kenneth Newton

February 11, 1923 - January 21, 2014

Ken passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his small loving family. He was a well known long-time resident of Port Alberni.

Ken was predeceased by his wife Annie, he is survived by his daughter, Maureen Lucas, his loving Grandchildren Linda (Kelly) Gardiner-Magnusson, Glenn (Lisa) Lucas & his 8 Great-Grandchildren, Michael, Cody, Bryce & Rikki Gardiner & Jade, Abby, Jamie & Rylan Lucas & his loving niece Chaddy Russell, sister Joan Max & niece Karen Zajak of Alberta.

Ken was born in England & came over to Canada as a small child. He was a very humble WW11 Veteran & Legion Member, after the war he was a hardworking Coalminer in Alberta & enjoyed his many horses throughout his years there. After moving to BC in 1959 he worked at the A.P.D Mill until his retirement.

Ken always enjoyed his family and time spent with his grandchildren, playing games, spending time in the great outdoors camping & just simple horseplay. He enjoyed Square Dancing with his wife Annie for several years, walking was a favorite pastime, he had a love for cars & enjoyed driving & travelling endless miles in his many motor homes. He enjoyed many trips to Reno and always enjoyed some time in the Casino here in town and Nanaimo. He was an avid bowler with many titles under his belt. He enjoyed the bowling alley & spending time with his friends playing his favorite game at Rainbow Alleys & on the road in tournaments.

Ken, aka Sweet Grampa, will always be remembered for his kind, generous, considerate & giving nature. There is no service by request.

Five badminton players from Port Alberni—four team members and one alternate—have qualified for the Zone 6 regional team that will compete at the 2014 BC Winter Games in Mission next month.

Declan Lenihan and Carson Rhodes have been named to the boys’ team and Amy Barker and Kim Norn to the girls’ team.

Amber Santarelli is an alternate for the girls’ team.

The athletes earned

their way to the games at a recent regional playoff in Nanaimo. They practice regularly at the Alberni Athletic Hall with coach Larry Spencer, both at the junior badminton club time as well as the adult session.

Linda Rhodes, whose son Carson made the team, said this is one of the strongest showings ever for Port Alberni at the Winter Games badminton event.

Carson’s older brother, Spencer, competed for Port Alberni two years ago but this is Carson’s

first time qualifying— and the same goes for the other players, Rhodes said.

The boys’ and girls’ team comprise eight players each. The others who made the team are from Nanaimo and Victoria.

More than 1,800 participants have already registered to take part in the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games, which kick off Feb. 20.

The ADSS girls and boys wrestling teams won the team title in the senior division of the Campbell River Invitational.

EJ Dunn and AW Neill had top three team finishes as well.

The ADSS boys were led by the gold medal performances of Jordan Wagner (60kg), Dean Leyland (74kg), and Christian Anderson (90kg). All three boys are among the most dedicated ADSS wrestlers and they certainly earned the right to go undefeated in the tournament. David Wilson (63kg) and

Johannes Kulich (70kg) finished with silver medals.

The ADSS girls were led by the gold medal performances of Remi Wells (57kg) and Michel Kurucz (60kg).

Lauren Barker (57kg) and Isabella Jones (60kg) finished with bronze medals.

A number of Lower Mainland teams competed in the meet, which was previously dominated

by Island teams. But competition is good, ADSS head coach John McDonald said.

“Overall our team performed well, we are small in

numbers but we are fortunate to have a very consistent core group of athletes,” he said. “There are some things we can work on but if we can get everyone healthy I think we will be ready to make a push at provincials.”

Neill Middle School placed third in the Junior Boys Division.

Brothers Owen (41kg) and Daniel (60kg) Spencer each won silver medals. Seth Price (35kg) and Scott Coulthart (63kg) finished with bronze medals.

The EJ Dunn Girls team finished third

in the Junior Girls Division. Anna Frost went undefeated at 33 kg. Ally Flaro finished second behind a very tough opponent from Phoenix.

The Dunn Boys finished fifth overall.

Isaac McDonald (41kg) and Jayce Clayton (70kg) each won their division.

Jarod Gagnon (70kg) finished with the bronze medal.

A small group of wrestlers are competing in Abbotsford Feb. 1.

Alberni wrestlers are preparing for the Alberni Invitational Feb. 7–8.

Super Bowl scramble at Alberni golf GERRY FAGAN Alberni Golf

It might be February but there’s action at the Alberni Golf Club.

The club is hosting the annual Super Bowl scramble and party on Feb. 2.

There will be nine holes of golf with many on course obstacles to overcome. It all begins with a shotgun start at noon and the kick off at 3 p.m. After golf come into the lounge relax, enjoy the lunch and the game while you sip on a beverage...or two.

There will be three or four meat draws, at half-time courtesy of Rick Paul of Double R Meats. The price for this fun filled day is $30 for members and $40 for guests. This entry fee includes golf, lunch and lots of prizes.

Players can register in the Pro Shop, or they can phone 250724-5422 and register as singles, or as four to six person teams.

The teams can consist of all men, all ladies or a mixed team. There will be very few rules, this is just a fun day.

Both golfers and non golfers are welcome to join in the activities.

If you prefer not to golf come out for the lunch and watch the game the big screen TV in the clubhouse.

One final topic regarding the Men’s Club. Finally at long last we have the Club Championship sorted out.

Once again congratulations to Mike Pichor on capturing the Club Championship for the second time.

Mike received a nice plaque and a cheque for $200. Runner up and I believe they went to extra holes was Jim Proteau who received $150. In the Flight, the winner was Bill Barrett who received $150.

Followed by runner up Livio Tedesco who got a cheque for $100.

Congratulations to all the winners, sorry it took so long.

The Bulldogs got in some exhibition and wrapped up league play in preparation for the event.

The Bulldogs played exhibition game against Cowichan on Jan. 24, and played against Comox in an away exhibition game on Jan. 25.
