At a public meeting to discuss the project in October, Naomi Brunemeyer of BC Housing said the proposed shelter site was selected in partnership with the city, which had full knowledge of the location and that it needed to be rezoned.Â Regardless of whether the downtown project proceeds, homeless people continue to live in Abbotsfordâ€™s core. Following the dismantling of the Jubilee Park camp, a teepee that had been erected thereÂ was relocated across from the currently under-construction Mennonite Central Committee Centre on Gladys Avenue, which is strewn with multiple homeless camps, including one at the site of the manure dumping incident. The teepee camp was served with a city eviction notice with a deadline of Jan. 2 â€“ a date that has come and gone. The site has since expanded, drawing in more people, tents and associated belongings and refuse. Rudolph said due to advice from the cityâ€™s solicitor, they are following the same protocol for that site as they did with Jubilee Park, including possible application for a court order to remove the camp, but that legal action has not yet been taken. With the issue in the forefront â€“ and a diversity of opinions on what to do about it â€“ the mayor has stated that further public dialogue will be held this year. But for now, the public will have their say on one particular project.

A disease afflicting bats across eastern North America has a local veterinarian “dreading” its arrival. White Nose Syndrome (WNS) is a fungal disease that kills bats during their winter hibernation period. It is believed to have been introduced to North America and to spread primarily through bat-to-bat contact. No cases have been reported in western North America so far. “As with any condition new to a population, there’s going to be high mortality rates,” said Dr. Ken Macquisten from Whatcom Road Veterinary Hospital. While he hasn’t personally seen the disease, his research has indicated “colonies were virtually wiped out.” “It’s primarily up to bats to control insects,” along with swallows, said Macquisten. Bats are slow to reproduce, he continued, so it would take survivors years to rebuild a colony. A lack of bats has potential effects on agriculture, said University of the Fraser Valley biology instruc-

Cat burglar sentenced An Abbotsford cat burglar has been sentenced to 50 days in jail and 18 months’ probation. Beau Burgessihota, 20, was sentenced on Jan. 16 in Abbotsford provincial court for a home break-in on Nov. 1 in Abbotsford and for uttering threats. Burgessihota and a young offender, who cannot be named due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were arrested and charged after police executed two search warrants on Nov. 5 and 6 and turned up property stolen from a cat burglary. Police had also been investigating four home breakins that took place in September, but Burgessihota and the young offender were not charged with any of them.

An ATV that warms the heart and soul Mark

Other Hand Though my sons have had them since they were small, and I once flirted with one back in the 1970s, motorcycles have never really been my thing. I must admit that seeing them ridden on sunny afternoons makes me occasionally wish for one, but common sense coupled with the very real potential for a disastrous accident quickly cancels the idea. After all, there is nothing but a set of handlebars between you and a rock face, or the back of a bus. On Friday, however, at the Vancouver Motorcycle Show (held every year at Tradex in Abbotsford despite its name) I did spend some time ogling a few beauties. The bikes were nice too, especially the latest crotch rocket from Ducati, which goes 0-60 miles

an hour in two seconds. You’ll never get me to prove that speedy claim. Firstly, who in their right mind would accelerate that fast, and how in the bleep do you hold on during the power surge? A vision of me riding my son’s big dirt bike for about 10 feet before crashing came to mind. If I ever torqued that Ducati, it would probably and instantly flip over backwards: 0-0 in .01 seconds. On the other hand, if you know how to ride, that is one fabulous bike. And sharing its display were 100 or more other two-, three- and four-wheel rides that would happily drain my retirement account should I be so inclined. There was a moment when I ran my hand over a quad that seemed to whisper my name, then I realized there actually may be a purpose to having a maxed-out credit card. In fact, the only thing I did fall victim to was a trio of hucksters selling leather lotion. Despite my protests, they insisted on demonstrating the wonders of the salve on my shoes. Relenting, I put my foot on the stand

and seconds later I had a nice shiny shoe. I then insisted, against his reluctance, that he do the other one; otherwise, I pointed out, with one shoe shiny and one not, it’d be like walking around the show wearing a red sock on one foot, a green one on the other. Thus it was with a sense of obligation that I shelled out $20 for a can of beeswax.

Perhaps the shoeshine, and the resulting leather conditioner was an omen to not trade in the ponies quite yet. If nothing else, all my horse saddles and bridles might one day look new again. The shoes, not so much. The beeswax also reminded me that for all the glitz and glitter of the machines, I have out in my field a couple of the best, original and most versatile “ATVs” in the world.

With them, and their predecessors, I have been to places inaccessible (legally and otherwise) to even the most adventurous dirt bike riders. Granted, it takes me a lot longer to get there, but other than the occasional passing of gas, a horse is a far more quiet and serene mode of transport. Then again, once the riding is done a quad or a bike demands nothing. Four-legged transport requires daily maintenance, whether used or not. But quick and cheap and appealing as they may be, a machine will never nuzzle, call out to you, stand at the fence in expectation of happy time when the hay is thrown or race about excitedly when you walk out to the gate. And despite their size and eagerness, they gently take a chunk of carrot out of the hand of a three-year-old. Perhaps the shoeshine, and the resulting leather conditioner was an omen to not trade in the ponies quite yet. Kind stranger thanked for assistance I wish to publicly thank the kind gentleman who went out of his way to help me and prevent a serious accident on Jan. 9. I was travelling on Highway 1 from Chilliwack to Abbotsford. It was a beautiful windy morning and I was driving in the left-hand lane when an object hit my car. I checked all my windows and I couldn’t see any damage, then I heard a whistle and slowed down, sensing something was wrong; just then a white vehicle pulled up beside me, the driver was frantically waving me down. I pulled into the right lane and slowly came to a stop on the side, realizing that I did indeed have a very flat tire. The driver of the white truck with a canopy stopped

and backed up to my location, jumped out to tell me that something had hit my tire, causing it to flatten within seconds. He had never seen a tire go that flat so quickly. He looked at the flat tire and asked me if I had a spare, which I did, and it was under three bags of 40-pound landscaping rocks which I had placed there to add weight to the car in case of a snowstorm. I asked what his name was and he said to call him angel, and then softly said “Ed.” Then he proceeded to unload the trunk, instructed me to get in the car and wait inside as it was very windy. The tire was changed in 10 minutes, the trunk was reloaded and just before I went over to thank him and offer a small token of my

appreciation, I told myself to take a good look at this awesome man who appeared in my life just when I needed help. I knew that this is what an angel looks like and always keep this vision in my memory bank. He refused the token of appreciation, saying he couldn’t sleep at night if he accepted money and told me to pass it on. This letter is late as I came down with a bad cold, but the memory of his grey hair blowing in the wind and sparkling eyes reinforced my belief that there are more wonderful people in this world than there are noncaring humans. Thank you Ed for being an alert driver, for stopping and for changing the flat tire. I wish you a very good life. Maryann Madore

Mountainside development moves to public hearing Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

A proposed development for 51 townhouse units along Falcon Ridge will go to public hearing Feb. 3. The site is located on Estevan Court and described in a city report as being defined by steep topography, and several watercourses to the east. In the past, companies have attempted to develop the area, but no project went forward on the lots. The area is currently zoned for single-family residential homes, but the applicant indicated that the necessary retaining walls required to support single-family lots is not economically feasible, and development would only be viable if absorbed over multiple units. To increase the viability of the project and the structural integrity, the property would include underground parking, which would help act as a retaining wall. A geotechnical report by Levelton Consultants Ltd. states that the project is feasible if adequately supported by foundation walls or other retaining structures. The development would also eliminate any future project to the north that was permitted by city zoning, by instituting a no-build covenant or dedicating the land to the city. The “stacked townhouse” proposal would be the first step of a multi-phase development that will see a combined total of 606 units. At a public consultation meeting, neighbours had concerns about building multifamily residences on what was intended for single-family homes, plus increasing density and traffic in the neighbourhood. Councillors expressed reservations about the project, citing that the community wants single-family homes and concerns about mountainside developments. Coun. Patricia Ross said she would oppose developing the area as she had on previous

projects, saying there was nothing in the new application to make her feel better about moving forward. Council passed the first reading of the proposal, sending it to a public hearing which will be held at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3.

The Utica Comets forward scored in the extra session on backto-back nights to lift the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate to a pair of victories at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Friday’s game was an epic goaltenders’ duel, with Utica’s Joacim Eriksson and Joni Ortio of the Abbotsford Heat combining to keep the puck out for all 60 minutes of regulation. Eriksson was particularly strong – his 36-save outing featured highlight-reel stops on Markus Granlund, Sven Baertschi and Max Reinhart, and he held his team in the game long enough for Ferriero to squeeze a top-corner shot past Ortio at 2:22 of OT for the game’s only goal. On Saturday, Ferriero was the hero again. With the game tied 3-3 in the extra frame, Heat defenceman Chris Breen had his stick snap on a slap shot. That sparked a Comets counterattack, and Ferriero hammered a slap shot past Abby keeper Joey MacDonald on a partial breakaway. “It feels good to help the team like that,” Ferriero said afterward. “I love four-on-four hockey (in OT). More space to move, so I can use my speed and shot to my advantage.” Granlund, Reinhart and Brett Olson scored for the Heat in regulation on Saturday, while Alex Grenier (2) and Brandon DeFazio replied for Utica. Eriksson was in goal for both Utica wins, and he picked up AHL player of the week honours on Monday. The Comets (last in the Western Conference at 15-20-5) have now won six in a row vs. the Heat (26-14-4). BALE Michael Stanley 1941 ~ 2014 In loving memory of Dr. MICHAEL STANLEY BALE, who died peacefully the evening of January 24, 2014. He had been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis and remained resilient throughout. Mike touched the lives of numerous individuals through his profession, hobbies, and personal life, and will be greatly missed by all. His legacy is held by a devoted wife, Patricia (nee Hansen); five children, Chris (Claire), Tanya (Jason), Geoffrey (Brittany), Gregory, and Natasha; and three grandchildren, Oliver, Joe, and Evan. He is also survived by four sisters, Heather, Jane, Jill, and Sue; extended family, and many close friends. Mike was overwhelmed by the outpouring of care for him during these past few weeks from family, friends, and patients. As was his nature, he left a note specifically requesting: “no service, no memorial … no fuss!!” Kindly forward any gestures to the Abbotsford Community Foundation Fund. Irene passed away in Abbotsford Hospital on January 21, 2014 and has now entered the presence of her Lord. She will be lovingly remembered for her warmth and care and was very much a blessing to her family and friends. Predeceased by her brother Haydn and sisters Evelyn and Shirley, and survived by her brothers John and Walter and sister Myrtle, her husband Fred, and children Dean, Gary and Gail. She took great joy in her family and friends, was very eager to lend a listening ear and was so willing to be a help unto others. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church, January 29, 2014 at 1:30 pm, preceded by family graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

Jan. 5, 1929 ~ Jan. 20, 2014 Grant Caseby passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord after a brief stay in Trillium at Bevan Village care home in Abbotsford, BC. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Anna (nee Dosso) of twenty eight years. His surviving or predeceased relatives are in the United Kingdom mostly in Scotland. Two surviving brothers are Ronald (Eveline) and Cyril (Gladys) as well as nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his first wife Isobel (Cherry) in 1983; his father, Rev Alexander Caseby in 1991, his mother Wiliamina (MacFarlane) Caseby in 2002, his sister Margaret (Hansford) in 2002, and his twin brother Alexander (Sandy) in 2003. Grant was born in Malawi, Africa, a son of missionary Presbyterian parents, and grew up in Africa and Scotland. In 1963 he immigrated to Canada and much of his career worked as a heavy duty mechanic for British Columbia Highways Ministry in Richmond, BC. He was a devout Christian most of his life, active in three Presbyterian churches in BC. In his younger years he taught Sunday School at St. Andrews and St. Stephens in North Vancouver. Later he was an elder for 18 years at St. Columba in Vancouver. When Anna and Grant moved to Abbotsford they became a part of Calvin Church where Anna has been active as a pastoral visitor. He married Anna Dosso, a registered nurse in September 21, 1985, in Richmond, BC. In later years they lived in Abbotsford, BC, where two of Anna’s sisters also resided. When still in good health, they enjoyed traveling with other seniors on sightseeing tours. Grant will be much remembered by the extended family members in Scotland and in southwestern British Columbia. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2597 Bourquin Crescent East, Abbotsford with The Rev. Blair D. Bertrand officiating. If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Calvin Presbyterian Church or to the charity of your choice.

GUEST Mary Sept. 3, 1920 ~ Dec. 13, 2013 Our beautiful Mom, Mary Guest, age 93 has danced off to meet Dad (Harry Guest). In 1926 Mary and her family moved to the farm in Hatzic Prairie. It was in there that Mom’s empathy and grace earned the first of many lifelong friends. Mom moved to Mission when she and Harry were married in 1945 and raised their 5 girls. They moved to “The Farm” in 1971 and were rightly proud of growing “the best Christmas trees in the valley” and making lasting memories with new friends. Mom continued on at the farm working another Christmas after Harry died and in 2011 she and Goldie moved to Peachland, BC where she developed and inspired new friends. Mary is survived by her daughters Mary Lou (Neil Bond) Barbara, Beverly and Patricia (Walter Ross), 7 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, loving sister-inlaw Rosita Hallam and her family and Rita and David Pink of Britain. She was predeceased by her soul mate Harry, their lovely daughter Elizabeth and their effervescent granddaughter Rio. Memorial will be held at 2 pm February 8, at St. Andrew’s United Church, 7756 Grand St., Mission with a tea to follow. Memories may be shared online at Dignity Memorial. Mae passed away peacefully in Abbotsford on January 21, 2014 at the age of 92 with her family by her side. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. After her marriage to Robert (Bob) Hunter (deceased 1989) she came to Canada in 1946 as a proud war bride, sailing to Halifax on the Queen Mary and then travelling across Canada to the west coast by train.
