Bats provide tremendous benefits because they are such effective consumers of pest insects, and their loss could lead to significant ecological and economic impacts.

White Nose Syndrome is named for the fuzzy white fungal growth on the nose, ears and wings of hibernating bats. First discovered in New York State in 2007, the disease has killed millions of bats in 22 states and five Canadian provinces.

The fungus is thought to have been introduced to North America and is primarily spread by batto-bat contact, although human spread by contaminated clothing and gear cannot be ruled out.

It is currently not known to exist in bat colonies west of the Rockies.

Scientists in B.C. are working to understand what bats need, how to protect them from White Nose Syndrome and how to help populations survive should the disease arrive. One of the first steps is to better understand bat behaviour and habitat use in the winter.

British Columbians are urged to contact provincial government biologists at 250 387-9500 if they see bats in the winter. Information of particular importance is the location of winter bat roosting sites, unusual behaviour such as flying during the day, and observation of dead or dying bats.

This week East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s Starlite Campaign received an additional boost of support thanks to a second gift of $3,000 from the Abreast in the Rockies Dragon Boat Association.

The club’s two gifts combined to a total of $5,000 with the funds being stewarded by EKFH. Over the past decade the Dragonboaters have directed some of its fundraising proceeds to support breast cancer care initiatives at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

Some of the memorable projects the paddlers have reinforced include a refurbishment of the EKRH oncology unit, funding to help purchase a node biopsy probe for the EKRH Surgical Team and most recently its visible and financial support for the A Clear

View – digital mammography campaign.

Accepting the gift on behalf of the Starlite Campaign is one of the foundation’s newest board members.

Mark Dickson and his family moved to Cranbrook a few months ago.

“I am humbled to accept this gift on behalf of EKFH. My mom has had a breast cancer diagnosis and seeing the generous support of the women involved with the Abreast in the Rockies Dragon Boat team is so rewarding.

It is also gratifying to know our foundation supports their commitment to giving back.”

The Starlite Campaign is entering its final week with the stars fading away at the end of January.

Environmental organizations team up for leadership clinic Submitted The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) is excited to announce that it has teamed up with its national counterpart, the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM), to offer a unique environmental education opportunity.

This spring, eight lucky teams of four will have the opportunity to participate in the Kootenays first ever Environmental Education Leadership Clinic to be held on April 26 -29, 2014.

Taking place adjacent to Kootenay National Park at Nipika Mountain Resort, the spectacular setting will provide inspiration for all teams.

CBEEN Chair, Gillian Cooper, commented, “This Leadership Clinic will give regional organizations the opportunity to teambuild, action-plan,

and work with others who are doing similar work across the country. CBEEN works to support the growing regional environmental education community, and we feel that this is the perfect time to provide and host an EE development opportunity”.

EECOM has considerable experience putting on this type of opportunity across the country. EECOM Chair, David Zandvliet, recounted “EECOM has implemented a number of important leadership clinics over the past twenty years.

We think this leadership clinic is a great opportunity to partner with CBEEN and to help coordinate the future direction of EE in the Kootenay region and beyond.”

Creston artist is the BC Wildlife Federation 2014 artist of the year

Creston Valley artist Guy Hobbs has been named the BC Wildlife Federation 2014 artist of the year for All He Surveys, his closeup depiction of a bald eagle.

Hobbs’ work was selected by a jury from three finalists in a field narrowed down from more than 30 submissions by a vote of delegates to the BCWF annual general meeting and convention.

Surprisingly, Hobbs has only been creating wildlife art for three years. Born and raised in England, he and his wife, Kerry, emigrated several years ago, making Castlegar their first Canadian home.

“It’s been a fascinating ride,” he admitted.

“I’ve been running the design business, too, and that helps to keep things realistic.“ The self-taught artist has developed his own technique for creating finely detailed pictures of wildlife after starting out drawing pets.

“Anything with fur or feathers,” he laughed.

From his original focus on charcoal pencil drawings, Hobbs’ work has evolved into a complex technique that combines the use of coloured pencils, brushes and paints, and an airbrush.

“It’s been a really interesting learning process,” he said. “I was working exclusively in colouring pencil and I hit a road block.

I’ve always said I’ve become a wildlife artist to cover up the fact that I’m a really mediocre wildlife photographer!“ He made a decision early on to only work from his own reference photos.

“It’s just a personal preference and I think it keeps me honest. As an artist I get to improve on my mediocre photos.”

One of the appeals of photography, Hobbs said, is that allows him to play with depth of field — “bringing some things to attention by throwing other things out of focus. That’s virtually impossible with pencil. Pencil can create really fine detail, but not the out-of-focus aspect of a photo.”

His early work (which can be viewed at www. guyhobbs.com), demonstrates his deft ability with charcoal pencils.

But his pictures took a giant leap forward when he began to experiment with another tool.

“I saw people’s work with airbrush and I thought, ‘That looks like fun,’ ” he said. “So I got an airbrush just to deal with background.

It achieved some other things I liked. Now, combining the pencils back with it there’s a lot more I can achieve. It really was one of those light bulb moments.

“It was a huge leap forward in what I was trying to achieve and what I was able to achieve.”

Astonishingly, All He Surveys is the first complete piece he created with his newly developed technique.

“That was a validation of what I was doing.”

Raised in the southeast of England, Hobbs is the youngest — “by quite a long way” — of seven children in his family. He had traveled around the world before he met and married Kerry, who is now the manager of the Creston campus of College of the Rockies.

“I also noticed how much more polite to each other the Americans were than the Brits, and how much more aware of one another’s existence they seemed to be.

“We were both in careers that were going very well but weren’t necessarily fulfilling.

We were very much in the rat race so we weren’t spending very much quality time together.”

Deciding that they could either continue to have more life adventures or keep doing what they were doing until they retired, they applied for Canadian visas after making a three-week tour around B.C. Three years, and three more road trips, later they were on their way to a new life in Canada.

“Coming to Canada was the best decision I have made — after getting married, that is,” Hobbs laughed.

tured very highly with us because it was more like England. We were looking for a change.”

In Castlegar, Kerry got into the hospitality industry, managing hotels. Hobbs kept his design agency going by working online. The agency, which he continues to operate, works with everything from small business startups to international blue chip companies.

“You love wildlife,” she said. “You are fascinated by wildlife — why don’t you draw it?”

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “I count myself very, very lucky.”

Some H1N1 Perspective

As we enter the peak of flu season we are all, once again, being inundated with scary information about the H1N1 virus and the urgent need for immunization.

Thankfully, the initial scare about an H1N1 catastrophe in 2009 did not materialize. The overt fear of the virus has, however, persisted despite it being a relatively normal form of Influenza Type A virus. In 2009 there were about 450 people who died from H1N1 across Canada. While the loss of any life is cause for concern, this death rate is absolutely typical of an average flu season.

In fact, there have been many years where many more people have died from typical seasonal flu.

Perspective #1: H1N1 is slightly less deadly than the average seasonal flu.

One of the unusual aspects about H1N1 is that the majority of people who die from it are between the ages of 15 and 65 years, significantly younger than average. What is rarely, if ever, reported, is that 100% of the people who died during the 2009

flu season from H1N1 had at least one underlying medical condition that predisposed them to poor outcomes according to a paper published in Influenza Journal by Dr. Regan et. al. (2012).

Perspective #2: Healthy people, even in the highrisk age group do not die from H1N1. Hand-inhand with flu season is the incessant message to get the flu shot. According to a huge review study by the Cochrane Collaboration the flu vaccine is, under ideal circumstances, about 3% effective. In other words, 30 people need to be vaccinated in order to prevent 1 case of the flu. What stands out above the hype and fear is that applying basic health principles will help protect you from the flu more than any other intervention. Exercise, eating a diet rich in plant-based foods and low in refined sugars, getting regular 8-9 hour sleeps and washing your hands are simple, safe things you can do to prevent illness and keep you healthy.

Dan Whitehouse and Anja McCloskey will be performing at Kimberley’s Centre 64 on January 29.

Birmingham- based singer-songwriter Dan Whitehouse and German-American accordionist and singer-songwriter Anja McCloskey undertake a joint Canadian tour in January and February 2014. The pair have written and recorded a joint EP, Still, which was released on UK indie label Sotones Records on 20th January 2014.

The tour will see Anja and Dan start off in Vancouver and then head through the Rocky Mountains.

“We are really excit-

ed about going on the road in Canada in winter time,” says Anja McCloskey. “In fact, I couldn’t think of a more beautiful time of year to explore this part of the world and begin this new musical collaboration.”

The pair first met at London Regent’s Park Zoo in 2002, introduced to each other by John Peel favourite and legendary UK indie singersongwriter Helen McCookerybook – whilst Dan was playing (rudimentary!) accordion to the animals as part of a school songwriting

project. Anja lambasted Dan for his clumsy accordion chops, and a friendship was born.

They stayed in touch and whenever they met would talk longingly about collaborating together, but it was not until the autumn of 2013 they finally started writing music together.

Five cars to drive while you still have a pulse

With baby boomers seemingly more aware of their own mortality these days, “bucket lists” of things to do before one’s demise have become increasingly popular.

Here are five of the cars everybody should drive before kicking the bucket, taking the big dirt nap, biting the dust or, well, you get the idea: 1. 1967 Corvette L88: The L88 was the Corvette that ordinary civilians weren’t sup-

posed to be able to buy. Rather, it was built to be taken racing by “privateers” (GM was still observing a ban on manufacturer supported racing). Although a regular production option, the L88 was expensive and came with almost no creature comforts. The horsepower was deliberately underrated on the option sheet to come in below the regular 427-cubic-inch 435-hp engine to further discourage Average Joe buyers. In reality, the L88

could make over 500 hp on racing fuel. Acceleration was shattering. It’s the ultimate classic Corvette Sting Ray. 2. 1967 Shelby Cobra 427: Carroll Shelby found that there was almost no spindly little British sports car that couldn’t be improved with the insertion of an American V-8. Under Shelby’s direction, the Sunbeam Alpine became the Sunbeam Tiger, and the AC Ace became the vaunted Shelby Cobra. The baddest

version of the Cobra sported a 427-cubic-inch engine that was similar to the one developed for NASCAR. Cobras are hot, noisy and cramped, but they’re really the greatest expression of the muscle car ethos—cram the largest possible engine into the smallest package.

3. 1992-98 McLaren F1: The F1 was everything a supercar should be but so seldom is. Many modern supercars are as much a fash-

car’s ability to bite back that can make it so much fun and a genuine accomplishment to master.

5. 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Hemi Superbird: The Superbird appeals to anyone with a “stick it to the man” sensibility. It’s whole reason for being was to introduce the streamlined nose cone and giant wing into Chrysler’s NASCAR efforts back when NASCAR still had

ion accessory as a car. Nobody ever bought an F1 as a bauble. Because of the car’s somewhat minimalist nature, and the fact that it was offered only with a conventional three-pedal manual transmission, posers didn’t apply.

It’s a reasonable certainty that Kanye West doesn’t own an F1. With three seats and a center driving position, plus reams of Formula One technology and incredible performance (0-60 in 3.2 seconds, ¼ mile in 11.6 and a top speed of 241 mph), the F1 is the one supercar that should be on any automotive bucket list.

4. 1976 Porsche 930: Of all the cars on this list, the earliest version of the Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera (otherwise known as the 930) is probably the one most capable of preventing the fulfillment of one’s automotive bucket list.

Early 930s were somewhat diabolical cars with tires that were a bit too small and a turbocharger that lit up suddenly and with a vengeance.

The turbo’s abrupt nature could make for scary driving at inopportune times (like the apex of a corner). But it’s the

homologation requirements for race cars. Although available with Mopar’s excellent 440-cubic-inch V-8, it’s the 426 Hemi that belongs on anyone’s automotive bucket list. Between the view over the long hood and nose cone and the view out the back with the five-story-tall wing, the Superbird driving experience is like nothing else.

DETROIT – As goes the North American International Auto Show, so goes the industry to which it provides high profile.

Every year at this time, journalists from around the world descend in their thousands on this former industrial powerhouse, now economically depressed Michigan city. The Driveway team has just returned and we all agreed there was an air of optimism on the show floor that we haven’t witnessed for some years.

Representatives of the Big Four domestic manufacturers believe they have turned the corner and the fellow scribes appear to agree that the North American brands have been revitalized.

Today in print and online, we each pick five vehicles that caught our eye.

Yours truly has been a fan of Honda’s premium Acura brand.

All solid performers but in recent years the design team has let the range down with uninspiring looks. The 2015 Acura TLX Prototype unveiling suggests the team is out of its uninspiring funk. This performance-luxury sedan, which will launch this summer, looks fresh and sporty. It will replace the TL and the TSX and will be the design leader as new models are revealed during the next few years.

TLX customers will be able to choose from two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations; two high-performance, highly fuel-efficient new engines – 2.4-litre and 3.5-litre V6s; two new advanced transmissions; and the next generation Acura Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) dynamic performance and handling technologies.

Audi showed of its compact crossover concept, unimaginatively dubbed the All Road Shooting Brake concept. It’s based on the forthcoming TT, this concept uses the S3’s 2.0TFSi engine of 292hp. It also gets a hybrid motor between the engine and the S-Tronic transmission. The market for the wagons is not big on this side of the pond but this could be a game changer.

The 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe is based on its sedan sibling and should be available by mid-summer, starting at the mid $30,000s.

The base power plant is a 2.0-litre, turbocharged inline four-cylinder, generating 272 horses, and a 3.6-litre V6, 321 hp is also available.

Interesting little feature: because coupes typically have large, long doors, the reach behind the shoulder to grab the seatbelt can be a stretch. The ATS Coupe has motorized carriers to “hand” the seatbelt to the driver and front passenger

upon entry.

The Toyota FT-1 coupe concept caused a stir among those hungering for a return to the days of the Toyota Celica/ Supra. Company officials were coy about whether it will go into production but judging by the media attention it will.

The Volkswagen Beetle Dune has a rugged off-road look, largely due to the raising of the body by 50 mm and the addition of 19-inch wheels with large tyres.

Just like the old days, the new Beetle features a rearmounted ski-rack. The concept is actually a return to an idea from January 2000, when VW showed the New Beetle Dune concept in Los Angeles. That was a flight fancy, this concept is built on the current production model and the German manufacturer is looking for the nod to proceed from Beetle buyers. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Ford Edge 2011 to 2013: Sexy styling and superior road manners

The Edge was the first midsized cross-utility vehicle from Ford when it was launched in 2007.

It has been a resounding sales success, especially in Canada, where it’s also built.

Compared with a more traditional utility vehicle, such as the then truck-based Ford Explorer, the Edge is a lighter car-based vehicle that offers better fuel economy, sexier styling and superior road manners, yet the Edge is packed with practical utility features.

Focusing on a popular vehicle choice has advantages for used vehicle shoppers. To start with, there should be a larger selection used product available out there and this allows you to be a pickier buyer.

You might even get the exact colour and content you want.

Parts and servicing are also less of an issue and generally less expensive.

The first big styling revamp of Edge came with the 2011 model year. While mainly a front/rear exterior restyling job over 60 per cent of its components were redesign and the interior was completely re-worked. It also earned Ford Edge the overall Best New Utility Vehicle Award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

The interior make-over included the introduction of MyFord Touch, an advanced connectivity system that has its critics in the media and consumer groups. Ford has tried to address these user issues with system updates. The main touch-screen is divided into four colour-coded sections (Phone, Audio, Climate and Navigation) and it can be operated with voice commands.

A major under-hood change followed in 2012 with the introduction of Ecoboost, an engine series that has revitalised the entire Ford product line.

The turbocharged 2.0 litre (240 horsepower) four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection in the Edge provides excellent power and great fuel economy.

The claimed city/highway fuel economy is 9.9/6.6 L/100 km.

Edge comes in three frontdrive trim levels SE, SEL and Limited editions. It’s also offered with a 3.5-litre V-6 engine that can produce 285 horsepower. City/highway fuel economy is 11.9/8.0 L/100 km.

This engine is also mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and there’s an optional all-wheel drive system. The top “Sport” edition of Edge comes with a 3.7 litre V6 that can produce 305-horsepower and comes with huge 22-inch polished-aluminum wheels.

The Ecoboost editions are strictly front-drive and come with an aero body kit package with an active front grille, which has concealed shutters that controls air flow through the radiator and the engine bay. The aero body kit includes unique side skirting, side mirrors and rear liftgate spoiler.

Edge is bigger on the inside than it might appear from the outside. The cabin is spacious and the room provided for rear passengers is particularly good. Rear riders also get adjustable seatbacks and top trim levels come with a power fold-down feature that allows the seatbacks to be remotely released by switches in the rear cargo area.

Two highly desirable (originally optional) active safety features are Blind Spot detection and Cross-Traffic Alert.

The blind spot system not only warns when another vehicle is lurking or approaching in an adjacent traffic lane. When backing out of a parking stall, the cross traffic alert system can detect and warn of vehicles approaching from either side.

Stylish yet practical, the good ride qualities of the Ford Edge make it an excellent road trip vehicle, especially with the fuel-saving Ecoboost engine under hood.

OBITUARY Daisy Charlotte Gunson (nee Ward) 1924 - 2014 We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved mother Daisy Gunson. She passed away peacefully at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital with her family at her side, just shy of her 90th birthday on Sunday, January 19, 2014.

Daisy was born to Frederick George Ward and Rosie Maria Ward (nee Wells) on their family farmstead on May 24, 1924, 8 miles out of Bangor Saskatchewan. She was the 6th of 7 children, having 5 sisters and 1 brother. In her early years the family moved north to the Okla area where she was raised until she joined the RCAF in 1943 to serve in WWII until after the war ended in 1946.

After the war Daisy took an education opportunity from Veterans affairs and became an RN. It was there she met and later married her late husband William Edwin Gunson in 1952. They moved to Cranbrook in 1956 and they bought the house on 9th in 1957 where she resided until her passing.

Daisy worked at both the old St. Eugene Hospital and the old Cranbrook Regional Hospital until her retirement in 1978. She was very civic minded and obtained life memberships with The Royal Canadian Legion LA, The United Church Women, The Seniors Branch #11 and The Hospital Auxiliary. She devoted her life to doing things for others.

Upon retirement Daisy kept busy with the church and other organizations participating in many catering and fundraising activities. She worked regularly in both the Thrift Shop and The Cellar and spent leisure time at home knitting, crocheting and sewing and gardening, camping and travelling with the Good Sams and dancing with the Belles and Beaus Square dance club. In later years Daisy tried her hand at painting with the Seniors Art Club and enjoyed volunteering at the south side tourist booth. Daisy was kind and caring and she held on to her sense of humour until the very end.

Daisy was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Ed, her sisters Ellen, Bessie, Lavinia, May, Nancy, brother Fred, infant daughter Charlotte Ellen and her grandson Neil Burr. She leaves to mourn her daughter Linda Haley of Cranbrook, 3 sons Ward (Leata) of Grande Prairie, Lionel (Carla) of Port Hardy and Malcolm (Darla) of High Level, stepdaughter Laurel Fenty, 13 grandchildren and as many great grandchildren - at last count.

A memorial service for Daisy will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at the Cranbrook United Church. Her Internment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery.

A reception at the Seniors Hall will follow the Interment. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, Okanagan/Kootenays Area Office, #4, 1551 - Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, British Columbia, V1Y 9M9 or the: Canadian Cancer Society, 19 - 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 2L9 or the: Hospital Auxiliary, 13 – 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9.

Jane Sorge 1923 - 2013 On Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at 3:00 pm, with family at her side, Jane Sorge passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord.....an angel taken home.

Mum was pre-deceased by her husband Bernard and her grandchildren, Sammy Lymburner (Dawn), Jacob Smaldon (Bonnie) and Alexis Parkinson (Heather). Bless their souls....they were taken far too soon.

Jane was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, August 31st, 1923 and married a handsome Flight Officer who her mother befriended and invited to their house for a good home cooked meal. At that time, she was working in carpet design until the war broke and then her work place was turned into an ammunition factory, where she continued to work.

On D-Day, her first of six daughters, Gloria, was born in her parent’s home. In time, with child in arms, she left her weeping parents behind to make the three-week journey by boat and then by train across Canada. She met again with her husband in Pincher Creek, Alberta in February of 1946 on his family's farm. This was a shock to a young Scottish girl who had never seen snow, let alone gas lanterns and outdoor toilets! The family lived in a variety of places after leaving Pincher Creek for greener pastures - Gold Bridge near Bralorne, Puntzi Mountain, an American Air Force base in the Chilcotin, and finally settling in Kamloops for better schooling and a job at the Pulp Mill for Dad. When people complained of the smell of the mill Mum always said, it smelled like "money" to her! Our modest home was a beehive of activity with now six daughters and a son, Gloria, Starlene, Dawn, Sharlyn, Bonnie, Lou and Heather.

Sunday dinners at home were always a big event with boyfriends, girlfriends and whoever needed a meal. As everyone left home, Mum and Dad retired back to Pincher Creek, and after the death of our Father in 1998, we brought Mum to Cranbrook to be closer to her girls and receive the help she would need as she aged. Jane lived in Victoria, B.C. with her daughter Bonnie and family for a while. She loved walking her little dog along the streets of Oak Bay and chatting with neighbours and fellow dog owners.

Our Mum was a gal of few words, but whose actions spoke loudly. She was the most patient and gentle person in the world, but could also make us all roar with laughter, which she did daily. She was also incredibly stylish! You would never see her without lipstick or gloves that didn't match the shoes and purse. Her passion was consignment stores and thrift stores, especially "Pippens". She was a beautiful classy woman with a heart of gold and a smile that could warm a dark room. She adored her family, and all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren of which there are many! Her best and loyal friend "Buddy", her pet Yorkie, is lost without her. His ashes will eventually be with her, as this was her special request. Her parting words to her family was to “Love each other as I have loved all of you”.

There will be a Funeral Mass at Christ The Servant Church in Cranbrook in May when weather is better for travel, so all of her family can be present. Her ashes will then be taken to Pincher Creek where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Bernard and her father, Alexander.
