South Cariboo

Staying active is easy By Arlene Jongbloets

T

he South Cariboo can pride itself in being a four-season playground for people of all ages. When it comes to fishing derbies, they are almost as abundant as the lakes. Horses are a trademark of the South Cariboo, and when spring and summer roll around, the 100 Mile & District Outriders Club is very active hosting horse shows, gymkhanas and various riding clinics. There are also an endless number of places to trail ride.

A couple of down-home gymkhanas are held on the second Saturdays in July and August at North Green Lake. Rodeos are a big draw and each new season kicks off with the Little Britches Rodeo and South Cariboo Rodeo Association BCRA Rodeo on the May long weekend. Set aside some time for the Bridge Lake Rodeo on the July 1 long weekend, and the Interlakes BCRA Rodeo on the August long weekend. Square dancing is alive and

well in the South Cariboo, with clubs in 100 Mile House and in Lac la Hache. The Bighorn Archery Club hosts weekly practice shoots and several 3D shoots during the year. Rod and gun clubs are also active in Lone Butte and Forest Grove. Model airplane aficionados have the 100 Mile Model Flyers club and clubhouse at 99 Mile. Our large crystal clear lakes are perfect for tubing, water skiing, wake boarding or swimming. The annual Mud Drags and Tough Truck Competition event is held each summer at 105 Mile. There is an 18-hole golf course at the 108 Mile Ranch and a nine-hole course at the north end of town at Marmot Ridge. Tin Cup Greens near South Green Lake is also worth a visit. Fishing is a year-round activity, with easy access to an abundance of stocked lakes. Continued on 7

ituated between Clinton and 100 Mile House, 70 Mile House, was born in the days of the Cariboo Gold Rush, and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2012. 70 Mile House is home to around 300 people. The area was once known for ranching, logging and saw-milling, but is now primarily a tourist area. In June, July and August, Green Lake, 10 kilometres east of Highway 97, is a popular fishing spot and a holiday mecca for hundreds of summer residents. There are several provincial parks on both the north and south sides of the lake, with both camping and picnic sites.

Three carriage driving events are held each year in 70 Mile House. The campsites can get busy in the summer, so it is a good idea to consider reserving a site with Parks BC. Visitors will enjoy great sunsets on a beauti-

Forest Grove

Forest Grove: jumping off point for circle tours By Marianne Van Osch

F

orest Grove is an historic community on Canim-Hendrix Lake Road, 21 kilometres from Highway 97. First settled around 1912, the village became the centre of business and social life for sawmill workers and their families. Although some structures, such as the bank, are gone and the berm of the once-thriving racetrack across from the store is barely discernible among the trees, the Forest Grove of today retains the flavour of the old village. Many older bungalows have been restored primarily by retired couples, with a sprinkling of young families adding new life to the Grove. Business in the Grove centres at the old Felker store, which has expanded to include a post office, a hardware store, a hair care salon and a pizza place. Next to the store is the Royal Canadian Legion where visitors are invited to enjoy the ambience and excellent meals. A general store/gas bar is at the corner, and a laundromat and fire hall are close by. Straight through the intersection on Eagle Creek Road are the school and a community complex that includes a hall, library, curling rink and a baseball diamond. Across from the school, Shaw Drive leads uphill to a pioneer cemetery. Forest Grove has a variety of service clubs and social groups that welcome

Carol Munro photo

A beautiful viewing of fall colours can be seen yearly at Ruth Lake. visitors. A walking club meets Mondays at the fire hall at 11 a.m. and a 50-Plus Group gathers at the Legion on Wednesdays. The Legion also offers cribbage, darts, pool, and a popular Saturday meat draw. The 94 Lions meet at the community hall on second and fourth Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Hootenannies, an entertaining mix of music, spoken word and dance, are held at the community hall on a regular basis. Several circle tours branch out from Forest Grove. CanimHendrix Lake Road continues to the right and drops down to the hills and fields of the Canim Lake Reserve. South Canim Road on the right offers stunning lakeside scenes. Past South Canim Road, Canim-Hendrix rises to spectacular views of the lake, where tall forested mountains drop straight to the water and the magnificent Cariboo

Mountains are a backdrop. Eagle Creek Road near the end of the pavement will bring you back to Forest Grove past beautiful Ruth Lake Park with its sandy beach and log picnic shelter. Another circle drive can be made from the Grove by proceeding through the intersection, on Eagle Creek Road. The road continues on to Ruth Lake Park. About a kilometre from the park, Bradley Creek Road (straight ahead) will take you along an old pioneer trail through peaceful, narrow valleys. The road ends at a T where a left turn onto Wilcox Road will bring you back to Forest Grove through quiet forests, past small lakes and an unusual view of Timothy Mountain. For year-round excitement and relaxation, the Cariboo is the best place to spend your leisure time. Summer brings a wide variety of outdoor activities to suit everyone’s desires from horseback riding to canoeing to golfing. Abundant fishing lakes provide the habitat for the famous rainbow trout. Many of our lakes are stocked annually by the Department of Fisheries to ensure your catch. Resorts and Provincial Campsites offer superb accommodations, whether you want a traditional-style western holiday or European-style hospitality. Sporting equipment is readily available at many resorts or local sport shops. The winter season attracts both downhill and cross-country skiing enthusiasts from all over, to take advantage of our mountains and miles of snow-covered trails. Wide open spaces of wilderness and frozen lakes invite snowmobilers to the area each year to participate in races and outdoor fun. Whatever your pleasure, you will find the Cariboo to be a place to return to year after year!

Lac des Roches

Lac des Roches: year-round playground

A

By Sharron Woloshyn

65-kilometre drive southeast of 100 Mile House puts travellers at one of the province’s most scenic rest stops that overlooks beautiful Lac des Roches, the most photographed lake in British Columbia. Located on the edge of the Interior Plateau, this is the only lake in the Cariboo that drains east to the North Thompson River. It is this waterway path that provided a natural trail for the Aboriginal people, fur traders and pioneers to access the Cariboo from the east. Evidence of the original Hudson’s Bay Fur Brigade Trail can still be found along

Highway 24 and the 15-kilometre lakeshore. Lac des Roches is known for its mayfly hatch and it attracts fishers from all over North America in late spring. Development of old pioneer grazing land into recreational

properties has transformed this high-altitude (around 3,700 feet) lake area into a popular recreation haven for year-round activities, including bird watching, boating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking and snowmobiling. Lac des Roches has two large resorts. Birch Lake, the adjoining lake, offers a rustic fishing camp and nearby Phinetta Lake is home to two forestry campsites and a rustic resort. For more information on events in this area, pick up a copy of the 100 Mile House Free Press or go to File photo the Free Press website at www.100milefreepress. Once called 47 Mile House, Clinton was an important stopping place on the Cariboo Gold Rush Trail in the 1800s and is still the place to find evidence of that history. Historic celebration 2013 is a special year for Clinton and its residents, as the village is celebrating the naming of the community 150 years ago, and incorporation as a village 50 years ago. On June 13, 1863, Queen Victoria gave 47 Mile the name Clinton after its namesake Lord Henry Pelham Clinton who was the Colonial Secretary of the day. Then, a century later on July 16, 1963, the Village of Clinton was incorporated. A 150/50 committee was formed to celebrate these two historical events, and the committee members have planned a party that will last the whole year. True to their words, there is a special event for just about every week of the year. To see the calendar of events, check out the Village of Clinton’s website at village.clinton.bc.ca and follow the links on the home page. Great museum The community boasts one of the best historical museums in British Columbia. It is open to the public daily from May to October. It houses a wonderful collection of the area’s pioneers and First Nations Clinton museum people. C l i n t o n Museum was opened in 1956 and is administered by the South Cariboo Historical Museum Society. It houses artifacts, archival records, and historical reference material relating to Clinton and the South Cariboo. Continued on 21

Canim Lake

Canim Lake a hub for family fun By Peter Hart

T

he sparkling waters of Canim Lake lie between rugged hills at the edge of the Fraser Plateau. From the early 1900s, resorts on the lake welcomed the rich and famous from Hollywood. More recently, it is young families and adventurous couples who come to swim, boat and picnic in the area at Canim, Mahood and Hawkins lakes. The fishing and the clean water remain as they were in the early days. Rainbow trout are caught by casting from the shore in the evenings, and heavy lake trout are regularly wrestled into the boat from the deeper water. For day-trippers, the dayuse Canim Beach Provincial Park on the north side of the lake has a child-friendly sheltered beach, a number of picnic tables and a wheelchairaccessible outhouse. Bring your barbecue for cooking. The six-hectare park offers views across the lake to the Quesnel Highlands sloping upwards to the massive Cariboo Mountains. Canim Lake is one of the larger lakes

Great fishing available to everyone By Diana Forster

S

ome of the best fishing in the Cariboo is available just a few kilometres east of 100 Mile House – the fish are jumping and the folks are friendly. And if you forget something or need food, fuel and refreshments, there are numerous communities in the area that have service centres. Mahood Lake Corridor Some 33 kilometres from 100 Mile, Horse Lake Road meets the Mahood Lake Road Corridor, which stretches 55 km to Mahood Lake. Near the south end, which is part of Interlakes, one finds Deka, Higgins, Sulphurous and Hathaway lakes, which provide abundant all-season fishing. Birders will enjoy Mountain Spruce Park, which also embraces trails, rare wildflowers and Heron Lake. Resorts, guest ranches, a restaurant and several bedand-breakfasts cater to a traveller’s every need, and many offer water and snow craft on loan. Deka and Sulphurous lakes host fishing derbies on the August long weekend. Avid canoeists can portage between Deka, Sulphurous and Hathaway lakes. Beyond these lakes are Drewry Lake and the spectacular Mahood and Canim falls, both of which are a short walk off the road. They both have trails leading to the falls, but caution and good footwear are advised. Bring your cameras.

The rainbow trout spawning channel at Sheridan Park resort. In winter, snowmobilers can travel great distances over a vast network of groomed trails, including those leading up Windy Mountain to its 6,390-foot peak. Interlakes On Highway 24, also known as the Fishing Highway, Interlakes is a vast area stretching from west of Lone Butte to Lac des Roches. It includes well-known lakes, such as Fawn, Sheridan and Bridge, and a myriad of smaller ones. The area is sparsely populated, with hundreds of trails for walking, horseback riding, hiking, birding, wildlife viewing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. It is also a haven for fishing and water sports. Artists, photographers, outdoor enthusiasts and nature-lovers are all drawn to the beauty of Interlakes. Services are available at Interlakes Corner, Sheridan

Complex and Bridge Lake, while several resorts, guest ranches, restaurants and bedand-breakfasts accommodate tourists. Centennial Park, near the east end of North Bridge Lake Road, is a particularly delightful spot for a picnic and swim. Of special interest is the rainbow trout spawning channel at Sheridan Park Resort, which is well worth a visit in May or early June. A farmers’ market is held outside Loon Bay Resort Saturdays from May 18 to Aug. 31. Events • The 64th Bridge Lake Stampede is on June 29. • The Interlakes BCRA Rodeo is on the August long weekend. • The Bridge Lake Fair is at the Roe Lake Hall on Aug. 17-18. Lone Butte

one Butte, which is situated on Highway 24 about nine kilometres east from Highway 97, was once a town larger than 100 Mile House.

Sandy Wilden photo

Minutes from Lone Butte is the beautiful Horse Lake. Lone Butte was known as the railroad centre for the area, and hosts one of the few remaining water towers left in British Columbia, which was

used during the steam-engine days. Water Tower Park is in “downtown” Lone Butte where visitors can enjoy a picnic. There is also a restored speeder shed, a children’s play area and public washrooms. Lone Butte is also home to a Cold War-era bomb shelter built in the late 1950s. It’s in the yard of Alice Singleton Heritage House (future museum) just a couple of blocks west of the water tower park. The town was named for the butte – a low, steep-sided volcanic plug – that overlooks the area. Visitors are welcome to climb the butte, and the view is absolutely fantastic. The road up to the butte is the first left past the Horse Lake Connector. You will drive by the Lone Butte Cemetery, where many of the area’s pioneers were buried. Irish Lake sits just below the butte and has a small recreational site. There are regular craft fairs held at the community hall during the spring and summer. The Fifth Annual Lone Butte Rocks Day is on July 6,
