Trip to Africa with A Better World ‘life-changing’ Lacombe Rotary Club members see the impact of projects firsthand

t is an amazing experience to see the good you are doing in the world.

Lacombe Rotarians recently made a trip to Africa where they visited two new schools constructed through A Better World and funded largely through the Lacombe Rotary Club.

Jyl Talsma was one of the Lacombe Rotarians on the trip. She said the trip was life-changing.

‘YOU KNOW, YOU HEAR ABOUT IT YOUR WHOLE LIFE AND YOU SEE THE PICTURES AND REALLY I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET THERE.’ JYL TALSMA “You know, you hear about it your whole life and you see the pictures and really I never thought I would be able to get there.”

The Lacombe Rotary Club visited two schools while in Africa. First, they visited the Turkana Education Centre in the remote village of Lodwar in northern Kenya.

Talsma said Lodwar was in a desert part of Kenya and it was very hot while they were there visiting. She said that she kept thinking how it was possible people lived in such a hot, arid climate.

However, the children seemed unbothered by the heat. Talsma said they were eager to interact with the Rotarians. She added many hugs were exchanged and the children loved having their pictures taken.

After Kenya, A Better World and the Lacombe Rotary Club traveled to Rwanda to visit the Umutara Deaf School.

Talsma said it was a happy time to visit the school as they were celebrating the graduation of its first ever Grade 6 class and she was glad to be a part of it.

“That was just so gratifying to watch,” said Talsma.

As part of the celebration, the students performed dances for the Rotarians as a way to say thank you. Talsma said that although the students are deaf, they still feel a rhythm.

“They love, love to dance,” said Talsma.

Talsma said she was incredibly touched when she saw the signage recognizing the Lacombe Rotary Club on the schools and was humbled by the gratitude of the students and their families.

“I realized that our small part in a bigger collaborative effort actually made such a positive difference in the lives of those families.”

Talsma said that while most of the parents of the students at both Turkana and Umutara schools did not have the opportunity to receive a formal education, but it hasn’t taken them long to learn how much it can improve the lives of their children.

Talsma added this was particularly true in the Umutara Deaf School because, before that school existed, there were no venues for deaf students to pursue an education.

“Those kids before had been hidden away and those parents did not know they were capable of learning,” said Talsma.

“They were just so grateful that their children had been exposed to education.”

Part of the Rotarians’ mandate is to support local charities and projects but also international ones.

Through A Better World, the Lacombe Rotary Club was able to support a local charity that works internationally and accomplish two goals in one.

Talsma said she thought it was fitting to visit the schools in Africa after being part of the process in the Rotary Club meetings

that decided where funds would go.

She said she didn’t think the Rotarians’ contributions to the projects would have been as significant had she and the other Rotarians not visited the locations in person.

“How else can you show that you care so much?”

Talsma went on to say that she was extremely glad to be able to go on the trip through Eric Rajah and A Better World.

She said she has incredible respect for Rajah and the work A Better World has done.

City releases year-end statistics for housing

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express While Lacombe may be one of the best places to live in Canada, it seems that people are not building as many places to live in Lacombe. However, this may not be for lack of wanting.

After compiling the yearend housing activity statistic for 2013, the City of Lacombe has discovered that there has been a drop in housing activity from 2012.

Last year, 89 new projects for dwellings were started, 15 less than the 104 in 2012 for a decrease of 14%.

This data is especially significant in light of the recent housing needs assessment completed late in November of last year, which stated that Lacombe’s vacancy rate is less than 1%.

Planning and Development Manager Lyla Peter agreed that the housing activity and housing needs assessment show there is great need for housing in Lacombe.

“It does reflect that we do have a tight housing

market in Lacombe,” said Peter.

However, Peter said that the problem is not that people don’t want to build housing in Lacombe, it’s that there are few serviced vacant lots available on which to build on. She added that, where there are lots available, buildings go up on them quite quickly.

“We are seeing a lot of our lots being snapped up fairly quickly and being built on,” said Peter.

As such, she said she is not worried about the current trend and believes that housing activity will improve as more lots are made available.

“I think to me, right now it definitely makes sense,” said Peter. “What wouldn’t make sense to me is if all of a sudden no new lots were ever brought forward. That would be a bigger concern.

(As it is) we see that there is a demand to live in our City, we are a desirable City to live in, we have so much to offer. So it would be perplexing to us if lots weren’t being brought forward.”

Peter went on to say that

divisions. It is too soon to tell whether this downward trend will continue into 2014, said Peter. She said it will depend on a number of things, including whether the lots currently being worked on will be released in time for this year’s building season.

working with are very receptive and willing to receive information about what Lacombians want and need in their housing market.

The largest decline in housing projects last year was in single-family semidetached houses, said Peter.

However, she added that the City saw a decline in housing activity across the board as well.

In a press release, the City of Lacombe stated that it is optimistic about the building forecast. While

the introduction of higher construction standards in April may initially slow development, there are a number of projects currently in the works.

The City is also confident that being ranked the eighth best place to live in Canada by Moneysense Magazine and the recent award for Canada’s Best Street by the Canadian Institute of Planners demonstrates that Lacombe remains a great place for people to live. news@reddeerexpress.com

Audiologist, Dr. Towers, Returns to Practice in Red Deer Dr. Towers, you’ve been an Audiologist in Red Deer since 2003. Where are you returning from?

I’m glad you asked. You are correct. I helped hundreds, if not thousands, of Central Albertans with hearing difficulty from 20032009. In 2009, I was asked to join one of the world’s largest hearing aid manufacturers and became the Chief of Audiology for their Canadian branch. It was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse and it turned out to be a tremendous learning experience.

You are seeing patients in Red Deer again. How might that experience you mentioned benefit the people from Central Alberta?

I think it presents me with a set of knowledge and experiences that is tough to find. I spent a lot of time at the manufacturer’s world headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was my job to bring back technical knowledge and research from Denmark to the Canadian hearing health care providers. So I learned a tremendous amount about how hearing aids are made, why they can be so expensive and what goes into research, development and production of hearing aids. On top of that, I got to travel to hundreds of other Audiology clinics across Canada to teach them about the technology. The best part is I got to learn from them as much as they learned from me. So overall, there is no doubt, that these are experiences that can’t be gained in Universities and Colleges and are really unique in Canada, let alone Alberta.

It seems like the world of hearing clinics and hearing aids

has changed a lot. Is it just me or are there a lot of new clinics?

It has changed a lot, for a couple of reasons. The first would be that some clinics are now owned by manufacturers. Obviously those clinics have an interest in what technology they might recommend.

Secondly, the baby boomers change everything as they have in every industry since WWII. They have influenced industries from diapers, to minvans. It just so happens now that that age group is getting to the point where a reduction in hearing is becoming a reality.

So how is someone supposed to decide where they should go for help?

I always tell my patients that who you see is more important than what you get. You should strongly consider choosing to see an Audiologist, specifically. Lacombe bowls for Big Brothers Big Sisters

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express On Jan. 15, Lacombe Big Brothers Big Sisters kicked off their 25th annual Bowl for Kid’s Sake.

Executive Director Crystal Zens said the program is the core fundraiser for the year and it is always well supported by the community.

“Lacombians have really good community spirit and have huge hearts,” said Zens.

Lacombe’s Bowl for Kid’s Sake campaign entails a number of bowling events.

There is the March 1st event at Ambassador Lanes followed by a number of school events featuring Wii bowling.

For the event at Ambassador Lanes, a number of teams, usually formed by local businesses, sign up to raise money and bowl.

Zens said that this year about 40 teams will be participating.

Each team raises at least $500 to participate in a night of bowling, raffles and overall fun.

Zens said each year there is a theme (this year is Mardi Gras) and participants are encouraged to dress to fit the theme. Prizes are awarded for best dressed and a variety of other things.

“Lacombe loves to dress up,” said Zens.

“You wouldn’t believe some of the costumes.”

Children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program get involved too. Each of the teams ‘adopts’ one of children mentored

by Big Brothers Big Sisters (called ‘littles’ by the program) for the night to bowl with and act as ambassadors for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Zens said this is a fantastic way for those outside to learn about the program and for sponsors to see where their money is going.

She added that it is great exposure for the program and is a good way to encourage people and businesses to participate in and support the program.

“We’ve actually scooped up some Big Brothers and Big Sisters that way,” said Zens.

She added it is also fun for the littles to

talk about the experiences they have had with their mentors or ‘bigs’ as they are called in the program.

“LACOMBIANS HAVE REALLY GOOD COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND HAVE HUGE HEARTS.” CRYSTAL ZENS

“The littles love to talk about their activities,” said Zens.

“Whether they got to go fishing or on a hike or camping with their bigs, that’s probably their favourite thing is sharing those moments.”

Bowl For Kid’s Sake has also become a team-building opportunity for many of the participating businesses, said Zens.

It serves as a fun night out with co-workers that goes to supporting a good cause.

In addition to the Ambassador Lanes bowling, Big Brothers Big Sisters runs a Wii Bowling event for participating schools in Lacombe and Blackfalds.

Students collect pledges from friends, family and the community and spend a lunch hour bowling on Wii consoles.

Big Brothers Big Sisters hopes to raise a total of $60,000 for their programming from Bowl for Kid’s Sake, $30,000 each from the bowling night and the school events combined, said Zens.

She added that Big Brothers Big Sisters also seeks out corporate sponsors for the campaign.

This year, Zens said there was a fantastic response to their corporate campaign.

Servus Credit Union has been named the title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year and Zens said a platinum sponsor and two gold sponsors have been obtained as well.

“It was a very successful kickoff.”

For 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making a positive difference in the lives of the nation’s youth by developing and implementing a wide range of mentoring programs.

Serving as role models, mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and of having respect for family, peers and community.

OPINION Keep criminals behind bars A Nova Scotia man who was convicted of drunk driving and killing a young man and woman has been granted parole despite admitting that he will likely continue to drink and drive.

Wait, what?

Yes, that’s right, a convicted drunk driver has been released even though he said he will continue to drink and drive.

In 2007, Michael Gerard Cooper was convicted of killing 19-year-old Angela Smits and her boyfriend, 20-year-old Michael MacLean while operating a motor vehicle intoxicated.

On Jan. 21, Cooper was granted parole after serving seven years for that crime, even though both he and the parole board stated he is likely to re-offend.

Numerous conditions have been placed on Cooper in addition to his release.

He is to refrain from consuming, purchasing, or possessing alcohol, entering any place alcohol is sold or consumed, is under a lifetime driving ban and must adhere to a curfew by remaining in his home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

One could argue that

these restrictions are in place to prevent Cooper from re-offending. However, Cooper has already demonstrated he has little regard for the rules.

Breaking any of these conditions would be against the law and could land Cooper back in prison.

But, drinking and driving is against the law too, and look how well that turned out. Not to mention, Cooper has said he would continue drinking and driving no matter what conditions were placed on him.

Why do we keep letting people like this out of prison?

This man committed a crime, was convicted, said he will probably commit crimes again, but we are still going to let him out of prison so that he can go ahead and do that.

Let’s not forget either how unfair Cooper’s sentence is to the families of the people he killed either.

Cooper isn’t just guilty of drinking and driving, he is guilty of killing two people while doing so.

Seven years, for ending two lives that were just beginning?

Such disproportionate sentencing is not unprecedented either.

Remember the 12-yearold girl who murdered her family in Medicine Hat? That girl was sentenced to 10 years, the maximum allowed under youth law, but she only served three years in prison.

After that, she was

moved to a group home and when she became old enough was even allowed to attend Mount Royal University to pursue a postsecondary education before her plans were leaked and she changed schools.

We cannot allow such injustices to continue as they have or allow ourselves to be put in danger by con-

tinuing to release high-risk offenders.

If this is a case of the law stating that Cooper has served his time and therefore must be released, we need to change that law.

Keeping him in prison seems a far better alternative than giving him the opportunity to get drunk and kill someone again.

This isn’t the first time that it has been suggested that Nintendo would do better if it stopped building consoles and allowed its characters to be licensed across other platforms.

After Nintendo reported its first ever loss two years ago, the oncepowerful video game giant adamantly refused to license its trademark characters like the Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, Link and Kirby and related games for use on other platforms.

However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Nintendo may no longer have a choice. Currently, the company is projecting a loss for the end of the current fiscal year and has cut forecasted sales of the Wii U by more than two-thirds.

Nintendo has certainly come a long way from the small company that printed playing cards. At one time, Nintendo was synonymous with video games and made images like Mario’s red hat and blue suspenders familiar even to those who have never touched a joystick or dpad in their lives.

However, nothing lasts forever and the abysmal sales (or lack thereof) for the Wii U have proved that Nintendo cannot compete with Sony’s Playstation line or Microsoft’s Xbox line, the current reigning consoles. If it continues on this path, Nintendo will fade away into history much like Atari before it.

There is one way Nintendo could save itself, though it refuses to do it. That is to get out of making

consoles themselves and license games and characters for use on other consoles.

I have no doubt that making Nintendo’s content available on other consoles would preserve the company’s existence. See, Nintendo’s problem is this, their games appeal to too narrow of a market.

Nintendo, throughout its lifetime, has done a fantastic job of creating wildly successful childfriendly games enjoyable for the whole family. When Nintendo released the Wii in 2006, it revolutionized the video-game industry and the living room by creating a console the whole family could enjoy together.

Trouble is, the children in those families grow up and the games don’t grow up with them. So, they turn to Microsoft and Sony’s consoles in order to access a more mature catalogue of video games.

Those consoles win-out over Nintendo because they cater to children as well as adult gamers.

But, extremely rare is the gamer who has never played one of Nintendo’s consoles and fond are the memories associated with them.

While older gamers may not be devoted enough to buy a console solely dedicated to Nintendo’s characters and games, they certainly would buy those games and enjoy them on other consoles, if only for nostalgia’s sake.

Nintendo should urgently reconsider staying in the console building business and how it licenses its intellectual property. Sega (once Nintendo’s fiercest rival) made the move decades ago and hasn’t released a console since the Dreamcast in 1998. While they may not be as recognizable as they were in the hey-day of the Genesis, they are still alive. Nintendo could go on making great games with their well-known characters that would be enjoyed by children and adults alike, but only on different consoles. Or, it could die. news@lacombeexpress.com

Introducing the Lacombe and District Ministerial Association On behalf of the Lacombe and District Ministerial Association (LDMA), I’d like to thank the Lacombe Express for giving us a voice in this community through this ‘faith column’.

As the current president, it’s my privilege to write the first article. So, I’d like to give a brief introduction to the LDMA. When I think of the LDMA, three words come to mind - support, unity and collaboration.

Support. The LDMA is a place of support for local pastors and church leaders.

We meet once a month for two hours. We spend the first hour supporting each other. We tell stories.

We talk about life and ministry.

We try to do what St.

JOHNSTON Paul says in Romans 12:15 NIV: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” We reflect on a passage of Scripture, and we pray for each other.

Let me tell you, that is a very important hour of my month! I’m thankful for the support I’ve received at the LDMA. Unity. The Church of Jesus Christ is called to make more disciples (students, apprentices) of Christ (Matthew 28:16-20).

In order to do that, we must work together. After all, Jesus prayed for our unity in John 17:20-23.

So at the LDMA, we’re colleagues working together to preach the gospel, make disciples of Christ, and serve the community.

And one of the ways that we seek to enhance our unity, in addition to meeting monthly as leaders, is to worship together every July (Lacombe Days ecumenical worship service).

Collaboration. Each local church is making a difference in this community.

Each church has its own specific and unique calling in addition to the larger and general calling of making disciples of Christ.

We need each other to fulfill our callings! So as we gather each month, we seek to learn from each other. We explore ways that we can partner together in ministry, so that

we don’t inadvertently duplicate programs, and so that we can become more effective in fulfilling our calling.

For example, the LDMA seeks to support and partner with Wolf Creek Youth Unlimited.

We participate in the local schools Christian Education program. We lead weekly worship services at the local senior’s facilities.

And we serve the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre as on-call chaplains.

So, that’s a brief introduction to the LDMA. I’d like to thank all of the pastors and church leaders who attend the ministerial, and their churches that allow them to be a part of this organization.

And I’d like to thank this community for its support and encouragement.

CP Rail to resume regulated track speeds As a result of the completion of the Hwy. 2A infrastructure improvements, Canadian Pacific is lifting a local track speed restriction at the Hwy. 12/ 50th St. level crossing in Lacombe, resuming regulated track speed in the area.

Changes resuming regulated track speed will be implemented as follows: - 20mph (32kph) to 35mph (56kph) currently effective.

- 35mph (56kph) to 55mph (89kph) effective Jan. 27.

This measure will improve the public traffic flow at railroad grade crossings, officials said.

Motorists are reminded when approaching any grade crossing: - Always be prepared to stop when approaching train tracks, do not attempt to drive around activated crossing or when crossing lights are flashing.

- If a crossing has no flashing lights or gates, look both ways to ensure no trains are approaching before entering the crossing.

- It takes 1-2 kms for a train to come to a safe stop after the brakes are applied, if your car stalls on the crossing tracks, get out, move off the tracks, and call 911.

- Never walk on the railroad tracks. The only legal place to cross a railroad line is at a marked grade crossing or designated pedestrian walkway.

For a Permitted Use that requires a variance of less than 10%, the complete application must be received on or before March 3, 2014, to be considered under the old requirements, assuming there is no appeal.

For a Permitted Use that fully complies with the requirements of the Land Use Bylaw all complete applications received prior to March 13, 2014 will be considered under the old requirements. No guarantees for consideration under the old requirements are made for fully compliant, complete applications received between March 14 - 27, 2014.

All permits received after the above dates will be subject to the new requirements.

Construction standard changes to come this April

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express This spring, the City will be changing its construction standards dealing with new housing projects.

As of April 1, the City will no longer be offering exemptions relating to ďŹ re wall ratings as per the Alberta Building Code. Lyla Peter, planning and development manager, said this could affect how the outer

walls of dwellings are built. “Depending on the side yard setbacks, the improvements may affect the type of construction material required for side walls and whether side windows will be permitted.�

Under section 9.10.15.4(1) of the Alberta Building Code, dwellings are exempt from the regular ďŹ re wall ratings on perimeter walls provided that the local ďŹ re department can

respond to 90% of all calls within 10 minutes, said Peter. Over the last few months, the City has been reviewing and measuring the response time of the Lacombe Fire Department and has determined that it cannot meet the 10 minute response time. Therefore, the exemption must be removed. “We have a fantastic ďŹ re service,â€? said Peter. “But because they are unable to offer that response

time, we are unable to offer this exemption.�

She added the ďŹ re department not being able to meet the 10 minute response time is due to Lacombe’s growth away from the downtown. She added that this change also relates to the new ďŹ re policy passed

by Lacombe City council in August of last year.

Another reason Lacombe Fire Department cannot meet the response time is

because it is a volunteer department. That means that ďŹ reďŹ ghters have to get to the ďŹ re hall before they can respond to an emergency.

Peter said that these standards are in place to prevent house ďŹ res inside dwellings from burning through to the outside of the building and to prevent ďŹ res spreading from house to house. With the new changes, the closer a house is built to its neighbours on

Grant for equipment Alberta Blue Cross has announced that the Town of Blackfalds has been selected to receive a $50,000 grant to fund new outdoor ďŹ tness equipment at the Abbey Centre.

The Town of Blackfalds is one of four organizations across the province to receive grants through the ďŹ rst year of the Alberta Blue Cross Healthy Communities Grant Program.

Through the program, Alberta Blue Cross has committed to investing $1 million over a ďŹ ve-year period to promote active living across Alberta.

Four $50,000 grants are being awarded each year to support community amenities and facilities that promote active living, with a particular emphasis on children. To ensure province-wide representation, the grants are split with one for Edmonton, one for Calgary, one for secondary cities and one for rural communities.

Blackfalds received the grant for the rural communities category. Funds will go towards the purchase and installation of outdoor ďŹ tness equipment at the Abbey Centre, Blackfalds’ new ďŹ eld house facility that is set to open in early 2014.

The equipment will be free to use for all residents and visitors.

ARTS & LEISURE Don Berner Sextet heading to Red Deer Acclaimed jazz master features tunes from new CD

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Hot on the heels of his latest sonic offering, Don Berner will be hitting a Red Deer stage late this month.

The Don Berner Sextet performs Jan. 30th at The District Eatery and Lounge.

Berner released his fourth CD Love Letters to a Rat Free Capital late last year and is following it up with live appearances around the country.

Inspired by the bands of Art Blakey, Dave Holland, and the Marsalis brothers, Berner’s sextet performs an eclectic mix of compositions. And the songs drawn from the new CD were composed by band members and were inspired by their love for their home city of Edmonton, capital of the ‘rat-free’ province of Alberta.

“I love my city and my province. Part of the initial concept of this album was to pay homage to that.

I also thought it was kind of humorous and memorable in a day and age when jazz albums tend to have covers of someone brooding in a corner looking at their instrument,” he explains with a laugh.

There is sophistication and style galore on this project, from the smooth elegance of the opening track True North to the sleek, engaging tones of In the Shadows of Churchill.

Other gems run the gamut from the care-free sensibility of The House That

Bop Built, Suite Things and the aptly-named Festival City. And things cool down to a dreamy, pleasant saunter with Long Green Valley.

Berner got off to an early introduction to music – his mom was a piano teacher so it wasn’t long before he was formally studying music. “My folks made us take lessons at an early age,” he recalls, adding that they had to at least give it a good honest try for a couple of years before opting out.

He ultimately found the saxophone, and laughs as he recalls the character of Richie Cunningham, played by Ron Howard, on the classic 70s sitcom Happy Days playing the sax.

“He used to play the sax in Al’s Diner,” he chuckles.

“Seeing it years later, I realized he was doing a very bad job of faking it.”

There was something about the cool sounds of the saxophone that struck him. But it would be a few years before Berner really caught the bug – when his high school band went to Music Fest in 1990. And it was about that time that Berner felt he had found his path in life.

“I love jazz because of its freedom of expression – it’s a very personal music form,” he explains. “You can improvise, so inherently there is a certain amount of reflection involved.

“There’s also a surprising history within Alberta of people performing this music at a very high level,” he explains. “I like that

sense of lineage to it. I also like the conversational aspect of it. In an improvisational setting, there’s a certain amount of conversation that goes on.

“If it was just me playing a whole bunch of stuff it would be like one long run-on sentence. But with performing, you are influenced by what is going on around you in the moment.

You play something, and somebody else plays something back. So it’s a very ‘democratic’ art form.”

Over the years, he has been featured on CBC recordings with the bands of Tommy Banks and Tilo Pailaz and has appeared at prominent jazz venues including the Yardbird Suite and Jazz City festival.

He has performed at the Canadian embassy in Washington D.C. and the Polish embassy in Ottawa.

Also, he has performed in Edmonton’s Winspear Centre and Jubilee Auditorium, and Calgary’s Jack Singer Hall. Berner has toured extensively all of Canada with various bands, and has appeared in Hong Kong and over 20 U.S. states (with Chicago label Blind Pig Records artist E.C. Scott).

Ultimately, Berner is a huge fan of music in general. He loves all kinds of genres, from rock to hip hop to R&B. And it’s that overall appreciation for the various forms music takes that also enhances his own particular style and approach to serving

Long-time musical tradition returns this weekend

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express An old-time and increasingly rare event will return to Lacombe on Sunday.

On Jan. 26, Lacombe will host the 37th Annual Lacombe Fiddler’s Jamboree.

Laurie Maetche, owner and instructor at Maetche Music Studios, has been involved with the Jamboree for 30 of its 37 years running and has been in charge of it since 2001. Maetche said that the Jamboree first began as a fiddle contest and was run by the Chamber of Commerce as part of its Snowfest event.

Now, Snowfest no longer exists but the Jamboree is still going strong. Maetche said one of the reasons she got involved with the Jamboree was to keep it alive.

“I didn’t want to see this fall by the wayside as well,” said Maetche.

Fiddlers come from all over Central Alberta to perform in the Jamboree, said Maetche.

She added that she and other fiddle instructors in the area strongly encourage their students to participate in the event.

It is important for Lacombe to keep its annual jamboree running, said Maetche, as there are hardly any jamborees held in the province any more.

She added that she feels it is also important for Lacombe to keep the event running as it has become a part of the community’s history.

All ages are welcome in the fiddler’s jamboree, said Maetche. All skill levels are welcome as well, she added.

“Even if you can’t play well, we’d love to have you there.”

As the event is held in the winter, participation in the Jamboree varies depending on road conditions, said Maetche.

Typically, 40-50 fiddlers participate.

Maetche added that numbers are declining somewhat as the senior fiddlers are getting too old to fiddle or are dying out.

However, she said that there is a healthy young crop of under 20 fiddlers stepping up to fill their shoes.

There is not a competitive element to the fiddler’s jamboree.

Maetche said it is more of a social gathering for fiddlers to meet and perform.

“It’s just a chance for these guys to come out and share their love for fiddle music.”

The jamboree runs much like a large re-

cital or concert for fiddlers.

Maetche said the fiddlers register in the morning and then play in the afternoon.

Fiddlers perform two pieces each or three if they are shorter pieces, said Maetche.

Fiddlers are allowed to perform any pieces they want.

For anyone curious about the difference between a fiddle and a violin, they are the same instrument. Maetche said one of the many jokes illustrating this is that the only difference between a violin and a fiddle is “The nut on the end of the bow.”

Fiddlers will be showing their stuff at Lacombe Upper Elementary School from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Jan. 26.

Whether it involves slicing, dicing, measuring, or simply getting ingredients out of the fridge and pantry; let’s face it, these tasks require some time.

In a world of horrible pre-cooked, prepackaged foods that are meant to enhance the schedule of our busy lives, I thought it would be practical to discuss options to make food preparation easier, rather than avoiding it altogether.

There are many things one can do in their kitchen to simplify this pre-dinner burden.

Having to gather fewer ingredients from your pantry not only reduces time, but also makes a recipe easier to approach psychologically too.

These tips come from my experience at working in restaurants.

Have a small dish of salt and a pepper mill at your fingertips on the counter at all times.

Chances are if you’re going to cook, you will need these two crucial ingredients.

Another great idea is to keep a couple of plastic squeeze bottles of oil handy.

One could be filled with healthy no-heat/ low-heat oil like extra virgin olive oil, and the other with high heat tolerance oil such as grape seed oil, rice bran oil, or even canola oil.

You can also arrange spices/herbs that you enjoy using on a regular basis in decorative containers by the stovetop for ease of use.

Imagine how inefficient a restaurant would be if they had to gather ingredients from around the kitchen for each meal they prepare.

Think like a restaurant and you’ll perform like one.

Reduce clutter and always have a prep area ready and waiting.

Every kitchen should have an open area in close proximity to where the kitchen knives are kept reserved for a pulling out a cutting board.

If preparing every meal includes a task of de-cluttering your countertops, the chances are greater that you will not bother to cook to begin with.

If you currently keep your knives in a knife block, then a wall-mounted magnetic strip for your knives may be the perfect solution to creating this vacant counter space.

A beautiful wood cutting board that you are proud to show off in a permanent location also makes it easier to get started.

General accessibility of all cooking utensils, including pots and pans, will also play a big part of your successes in the kitchen.

Take some time to reorganize based on your cooking habits and everything will fall into place in a much more efficient manner.

Start a collection of recipes that you not only love to eat, but also are comfortable to prepare.

The decision making process of ‘what to make’ can become one of the largest time wasters when it comes to preparing a meal.

We all have a collection of cookbooks, but we need to take one step farther and create our own assortment of recipes from these books that we know and love.

Lastly, consider taking a knife skills course.

Chances are you have a kitchen and plan to continue eating food the rest of your life, so the small cost amount of such a course will be an investment and pay you back one hundred fold.

This will be a saving of not only your future time, but also your future health as well.

Generals’ hot streak ends with lopsided loss

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It was a strong reminder that no one is unbeatable and all good things must come to an end.

In a one-sided game on Jan. 17, the Bentley Generals ended their winning streak when they lost to the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs 7-1.

Speaking after the game, Coach Ryan Tobler said to put it simply, the Generals got beat and badly.

“We got schooled tonight, no question.”

Things were not looking good for the Generals even in the first period. Fort Saskatchewan was out maneuvering and outpassing Bentley to keep much better control of the ice and the game. Solid defence

from the Chiefs added to the Generals woes as they could not break through to the net and when they did the impeccable goalkeeping of Jim Watt still prevented them from scoring. However, the Chiefs had little trouble finding the back of the Generals’ net and the period ended 3-0 in favour of Fort Saskatchewan.

It looked like a comeback might be at hand for Bentley when they scored the first goal of the second period. However, those hopes were dashed later in the period, when Fort Saskatchewan answered the goal with two of their own to make the score 5-1 at the end of the second.

By the third period, the frustrations of the Generals were clear as they became more and more aggressive to their opponents and the game became rougher. A few

fights nearly broke out after whistles, leading to a number of penalties to both sides, particularly for the Generals. Fort Saskatchewan scored two more goals to add insult to injury and ended the game 7-1.

It was a disappointing end to the Generals 12-game winning streak that began with a win against the Chiefs on Nov. 9.

Despite 28 shots on net, Bentley could not score more than once or break the momentum of the successful Fort Saskatchewan offence.

Tobler said he did not want to make excuses for why the team performed poorly.

Instead, he said the important thing to focus on is learning from last weekend’s game and using it as motivation in the future.

of this game but the bottom line is you have to keep moving forward.” He added that a lot of the players in the dressing room after the game were upset and frustrated and eager to prove they could perform better than they had Friday night.

“There is no doubt in mind that we will have a big effort next game.”

Tobler went on to add that he thought the most important lesson from the loss against Fort Saskatchewan was to always be ready for anything. Just because the Generals are on a steak doesn’t mean they won’t meat another hot team, he said. Tobler added that, he hopes to use what the Generals learned from last Friday’s game to turn things around the next time they face off against the Chiefs. news@lacombeexpress.com

Lacombe will have solid representation at this year’s Alberta Winter Games.

Luke Miller, 12, is one of three young men from Lacombe chosen to play on the Zone 4 Pee Wee Hockey team for the Alberta Winter Games to be held in Banff and Canmore this year.

Miller has been playing hockey for about seven years. He said he finds the sport a lot of fun and enjoys hockey for the opportunity it gives him to learn and progress with new skills.

When Miller heard about the Games from his parents, he decided to try out thinking it would be a fantastic experience and an opportunity to try his hand at a more competitive level of hockey.

At the tryouts, Miller said he was a bit nervous but more so he was having fun and focusing on meeting new players, coaches and learning new drills.

He said the only thing that took him out of his comfort zone was sharing the ice with so many newcomers rather than his familiar teammates.

LUKE MILLER Megan, Luke’s mother, said she too was more excited than nervous as she watched her son try out.

She added that she also was impressed at the skills displayed on the ice.“I was kind of in awe at the number of talented players.”

After the tryouts, Luke waited to learn if he would make the team.

Unlike some of his teammates, he said he wasn’t overly anxious or nervous about getting the call. However, he did say that when his friend Jackson Rider learned he had made the team, Luke started to wonder whether or not he had made the cut as well.

When he learned that he had indeed made the team, he was happy and excited.

“I was glad I would get the opportunity to play at a sort of, ‘mini-Olympics’.”

At this point, Luke said he is very excited to play in the Alberta Winter Games.

In particular, he said he is looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends.

Luke will certainly have a lot of time to meet and get to know new people, as he will spending a lot of time both on ice and off with his new teammates, most of whom he doesn’t know.

However, he is glad to be playing with two of his friends, Rider and Adam Heindel, as well.

While Luke, Rider and Heindel have played together, they have not played on a team with all of the other players in Zone 4. As such, he said the time they spend together, both on ice and off, will help them become more cohesive.

He added that it will take the team some time to get used to each other’s different styles, but by the first game he thinks his teammates will have their feet under them.

Isn’t it exciting that the Lacombe Express is now in your fair city with a definite focus on what is new and newsworthy in Lacombe?

As a former resident I have fond feelings for the City of Lacombe and am privileged to be writing for you every week as I share my interior design tips and tricks and some life lessons along the way. I was recently in Lacombe visiting a friend and was taken back in a wave of nostalgia for this friendly community; you folks truly have something special. As I walked into the junior high for the first time in many years to watch my friend’s daughter’s volleyball game I was reminded of all the

MECKLER years spent there while my own daughter attended. From basketball games to graduation ceremonies there are good memories which came flooding back from the sights, smells and sounds in that building.

Our environment can create in us memories and emotions simply by how it may remind us of warm recollections from our past. Often we will subconsciously recreate a reading nook or fireplace hearth which is reminiscent of some long tucked away memory. These bits of nostalgia bring us joy and a great deal of comfort.

My mom had a knitted blanket in the

most awful combinations of blue combined in a bold chevron pattern. She would curl up under it in the evenings on the red velvet loveseat that was in her master bedroom and read or write letters. I have always (since then) had a cozy blanket or two on my couch or chair for TV watching and reading. The presence of these throws is evocative and practical and reminds me of times spent with my mom in her bedroom.

We all have those comfort zones, don’t we? Do you find you have set up your kitchen so it functions like the kitchen you grew up in? I still keep my bread in the microwave which people often comment on (that’s weird!) yet that is where my mom kept it. Even though I may not decorate in blue, white and burgundy there is still a fondness in my heart for old, two-storey heritage homes like the one I grew up in.

I know that the childhood memories were

sweet and there is a great comfort in replicating some of those elements in my current home.

Recently I saw a cluster of glass grapes at a home design store perched on a modern chrome coffee table – wow! My mind raced back to my auntie’s house and the very same grapes which sat on her coffee table. Her coffee table was oak with turned spindles and yellow opaque glass door inserts but seeing the grapes made me want to sit beside the coffee table with a colouring book. Wouldn’t that have made the sales associates wonder about me!

Try creating your own updated version of favourite spaces and memories. Whether you bring back a vintage look or update a memory, those spaces will always give you a pleasant feeling of nostalgia.
