DEVASTATING

Shortly before 1 a.m. Monday morning, Patrick Sawyer was flooding the surface of the old Sylvan Lake Arena when he heard several bangs. Then after another series of bangs, the roof started to collapse and he scrambled to safety uninjured. Mayor Sean McIntyre, Sawyer, and Graham Parsons, owner of Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey School, operator of the arena and a town councillor, examined the wreckage shortly afterwards. Several beams fell in, the back wall was blown out and the ice surface was completely littered with snow and debris. The machine Sawyer was operating was also buried by the falling roof. A women’s hockey team, the last to use the facility, had departed the building around midnight. See more on pages 3, 5, 6, and 7.

- École Steffie Woima Elementary School teacher Amy Bouwman was selected as the only person from Western Canada to participate as one of 50 volunteers who departed on a week-long Lifetouch Memory Mission to build a school in the Dominican Republic Tuesday. Last Friday, students at the school paid a toonie for a piece of duct tape to stick her to the wall. They raised $1,062.95.

Arena roof’s collapse could have had far worse results

As people mourn the loss of a community recreation hub in Sylvan Lake, there’s also a wave of relief sweeping the community.

A few minutes — or hours — earlier, and the collapse of the arena’s roof could have had devastating results.

Luckily there was no loss of life or injuries.

A women’s hockey game concluded about 11 p.m. and they “left around midnightish”, according to a post on the Sylvan Lake News’ Facebook page by Arla Lunde.

About 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, Patrick Sawyer was driving the ice resurfacer when he heard what he described as a couple of bangs. He initially thought it was someone at the back door and continued on his circuit. But when a second series of cracks resounded through the building and the roof started to collapse, he scrambled to safety uninjured. He “had the wherewithal to shut off gas in the building” and check that everyone was out before phoning emergency services and his boss of 27 years, Graham Parsons, Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey Camp owner and operator of the arena. Parsons in turn alerted Mayor Sean McIntyre.

Sylvan Lake firefighters received the call at 12:53 a.m. and when they arrived RCMP were already there.

At least two beams and portions of the roof collapsed and the back (east) wall was blown out. Snow and debris littered the ice surface and buried the ice resurfacer which was still on the ice, just metres from the door where it enters the rink.

Snow was visibly thicker on the south side of the

roof, where it was shadowed by the adjacent multiplex, than the north side which is visible from 49th Avenue.

At the scene shortly after the collapse, McIntyre said, “I can hardly believe my eyes. Absolutely shocking.”

The arena, which opened in 1972, was scheduled for replacement by a larger leisure centre in the near future. “We were hoping to get another two years out of it, we haven’t started detailed design yet,” Ron Lebsack, director of community services said during a press conference at noon Monday.

Asked about snow on the roof, Lebsack said the town has always had a snow removal program. Last Thursday, they’d just finished snow removal from the curling rink roof for the second time this season. “We hadn’t had a chance to get to this facility yet … within a couple of days we would have gotten to it.”

McIntyre stated, “There are a lot of heartbroken people in Sylvan Lake today. We’ve had an icon, a landmark in our community, collapse.”

“There’s a lot of love for the facility, a lot of sadness to see it go.”

He added, the town has faced adversity and tragedy in its 100 year history and pulled together before.

“Now’s when we band together as a community to see a new facility built, to make new memories.”

“It’s sad,” said Parsons who has walked the halls of the building for the past 40 years. “You’d like to say goodbye to the old girl the proper way. It shouldn’t go unceremoniously like this.”

Home to the long running hockey camp, the arena has hosted tens of thousands of youngsters over the years, many who have gone on to careers in the NHL and European hockey leagues. The camp will continue this summer utilizing the multiplex.

The south wall of the arena is bowed where a beam fell from the roof early Monday morning. Concerns the wall could fall further striking the multiplex have prompted that building’s closure until demolition is done.

Multiplex won’t reopen until arena demolished

Sylvan Lake’s remaining indoor ice surface will remain closed longer than originally anticipated.

The reason is the location of the building in proximity to the arena which was rendered unusable when about one-third of its roof collapsed early Monday morning.

The multiplex, situated immediately south of the arena, was originally shut down because the gas line which supplies it ran through the arena. But councillors were told at a special meeting Tuesday night, that the remainder of the arena will have to be demolished before the multiplex can be used again.

The reason, said Ron Lebsack, director of community services, is that if the south wall of the arena collapsed and fell towards the multiplex it would be within the ‘strike zone’ and could damage the building’s dressing rooms.

corner of the multiplex from 48th Avenue. That work, and the work of a contractor inside to install piping to the main line location in the northeast end of the building, was expected to be completed Wednesday.

Lebsack estimated at Tuesday’s meeting the town could have the facility ready for use within two days.

Approval for demolition is needed from the insurance company before it can begin. The company has been made aware of the town’s dilemma and he hoped to get approval to begin demolition of the arena quickly.

“We are still awaiting the insurance provider to complete an assessment of the building by (their own) structural engineer and a visit and report from a property valuation firm,” said Lebsack in a

written report.

Councillor Dale Plante received confirmation from Lebsack that the multiplex could be reopened when the arena’s south wall was on the ground and that they wouldn’t have to wait for debris to be cleared from the site.

Asked how long demolition would take, Lebsack said information he’d received was that it could be done in a matter of hours.

Mayor Sean McIntyre concluded the open portion of council’s meeting

stating, the town has plans in place to “develop a facility in that region.

Council and I will have to review them to make sure we proceed strategically. We have to address them immediately but we’re not interested in rushing decisions in fear of making decisions that will plague us in the future.

“It’s time for us to unite as a community to come out of this situation.

We’ve done it before.”

Insinuations of ill-will and negligence far from truth Town’s CAO reaches out with arena collapse details Dear Editor, As Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Sylvan Lake, I feel compelled to reach out to Sylvan Lake residents and area facility users and provide the facts, as they relate to our Sylvan Lake Arena and its collapse.

Earlier this week, certain media outlets suggested a hidden agenda, within the town organization, to hide information about the arena structure. This could be no farther from the truth.

In 2012, the Town of Sylvan Lake, through a public tendering process, commissioned the services of Cognidyn Engineering & Design, to perform a structural assessment on two of the oldest town facilities — the curling rink and the arena. This was a responsible and proactive action taken for good reason as both facilities were over 40 years old.

The final structural assessment was received in March 2012 and presented publicly to council on March 26, 2012.

The Structural Assessment is available in its entirely at www.sylvanlake.ca/ public-notices; however, the key findings are presented below: Curling Rink - Conclusions & Recommendations In the final analysis, our recommendation would be to replace the building ASAP. Spring of 2014 would be the true end of a safe occupancy for the building, but 2013 would be better. A very close monitoring of the building should be done if it is to be kept open, and the above noted snow removal program, done is a roof-friendly yet OH&S approved manner, is mandatory. If the building could be replaced without anymore use needed, then so much the better.

Arena - Conclusions & Recommendations Given the evidence at hand, we are of the opinion that this facility has about 2-3 years of useful life remaining if no supplemental maintenance work is invested — conditional of course on the noted snow removal program. If the minor maintenance work is done ($300,000+), and the snow removal program is maintained, then we would give this structure 7-10 years - possibly more.

There was a good turn-out at the annual banquet meeting of the Chamber of Commerce held in Sylvan Lake hotel on Tuesday night, over 60 being n attendance.

Reports covering the activities of the organization were presented by

This decision, and the allocation of funds to support it in the longterm capital plan, all occurred in a public forum and were reported by local media.

Insinuations of ill-will and negligence on the town’s behalf, as it relates specifically to the arena, and that we have hidden the results of our Structural

Assessment from the public, are far from truth. The assessment document was provided to the Curling Club well before this incident. The Town’s Director of Community Services repeatedly referenced the Structural Assessment throughout our conversations with the media in the aftermath of our arena collapse. Though the assessment itself has long been replaced on the front page of our website, the report to council is still available online through our Civic Web system and will again be placed on our “What’s Happening” page for the public to view.

I certainly understand that the public will have questions on how staff managed the monitoring and removal of snow from these two facilities, but please, do not believe for a moment that we have tried to cover up the findings of the assessment or that we have not taken any action in the two years since its inception.

In recent weeks I authorized the closure of the curling club facility on two occasions until snow could be removed from the roof. I would have had no hesitation to have closed the arena as well, had I known of the snow load situation.

We are all aware of the added pres-

sures associated with this winter’s unusual effects, and this was certainly a considerable factor in the collapse of our arena.

I am not satisfied with simply saying that we, as an organization, followed procedure and leaving it at that. I am not okay with what happened. Town staff members are not okay with what happened. We know you, the users of the arena; we know your children. You support our initiatives and attend our events and you are our neighbours, and no one is okay with what happened.

Our immediate efforts right now are concentrated on dealing with the many issues associated with the arena collapse and the reopening of the multiplex.

However, we are moving forward shortly to closely and objectively review town activities and routine procedures prior to the collapse and report back to council in a public meeting.

The ongoing maintenance of current facilities and development of our new Leisure Centre are our focus. The Town of Sylvan Lake will work with residents to ensure you are provided with safe, functional, well thought out and operated recreational facilities.

They need to be clarified quickly so that we can “band together as a community to see a new facility built” and he’s challenged us.

At the conclusion of Tuesday night’s council meeting he said the town

had plans to “develop a facility in that region” but that council is “not interested in rushing decisions in fear of making decisions that will plague us in the future”.

Ice scheduling being accommodated as availability allows

With Sylvan Lake’s hockey rink capacity reduced by half, many people in the community and outside are rallying to overcome the challenge.

“Other towns have stepped up big time,” said Graham Parsons Tuesday morning. “All the offers coming in are tremendous. When something like this happens everyone is willing to step up.”

He noted Sylvan provided similar support to Red Deer earlier this year scheduling four practices here when the Kinsmen arena was unavailable.

“The response has been tremendous — and the condolences, holy, it’s like a funeral.”

Parsons faced a double challenge for hours Monday, when he was unable to get into his office to retrieve his schedules and computer.

After a structural engineer viewed the arena, he was allowed into the front of the building for a short time late in the day where he cleaned out his office, and “much to everyone’s relief got the provincial pictures off the wall”. He was also able to salvage the two tribute jerseys — for Colton Lakeman and Chase Cornford.

Now he’s back to work, answering calls and trying to accommodate the needs of hundreds of youngsters who played hockey, figure skated and participated in other activities in the building. “I’ve been on the phone all morning,” he said. “Whatever ice we get we’ll put into a pool and divide appropriately.”

Parsons indicated he’s got 80 league games to reschedule. Several slots have already been provided in Eckville and they’re looking at times in Bowden, Rimbey and Innisfail.

He told councillors Tuesday night, he’d had calls from every municipality within 45

miles. “There’s lots of ice time, it’s just somewhere else.”

Ron Lebsack, director of community services, told councillors one option they’ll be bringing back to council is the idea of adult ice times being moved later in the day to accommodate more youth bookings.

Asked about tournaments, Parsons said the Atom AA and Atom A teams volunteered to give up their tournament on the 14th.

Other than that there weren’t any tournaments scheduled until March. “They may be able to be salvaged depending on playoffs.”

Besides dealing with the loss of the arena, the adjacent multiplex has been shut down because its gas line ran through the arena.

Atco Gas crews were on hand Tuesday working on a solution.

He’s had phone calls, emails and Facebook posts from all over the world.

“So many guys stayed in the rink, with the hockey school guys lived there. It’s such a part of the life, it’s tough to believe.”

Parsons talked of hearing from a “kid” from Austria who was here in the mid- ’80s, others from Quatar, Denmark and instructors from Texas.

Pretty well every minor hockey association has sent a note.

“It’s sad, you’d like to say goodbye to the old girl the proper way,” Parsons said. “It shouldn’t go unceremoniously like this.” He hinted there was talk about ways to celebrate when the arena, which was scheduled for replacement in the near future, ended its life.

“Thanks to everybody for all the help, it’s been tremendous,” he concluded. “Special thanks to emergency services. They really do have the user groups at heart … but it’s safety first.”

An early morning phone call from 27 year employee Patrick Sawyer upset plans Graham Parsons had for a major announcement Monday on the future of Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp.

But he rebounded quickly. By noon he was ready to assure everyone that the camp will thrive, using the multiplex as its base.

Sawyer’s message, recalled Parsons was “get down here, the rink fell down!� And on viewing the destruction, it was easy to see it meant the end of a grand old lady.

Construction of the arena was started in 1969 and it was officially opened in 1972, according to Parsons.

He had been planning to “roll out a partnership with Hockey Alberta�

Monday morning. While that was overshadowed, he divided his time telling the story and assuring the

business he’s operated for 40 years will continue, while fielding phone calls of condolence and concern.

Hockey Alberta has partnered with Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp and Development Centre to assist with delivery programs that follow the association’s principals on the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) initiative. “The camp has enhanced its development programs, both on-ice and off-ice, to ensure these principals are adhered to,� stated a notice sent to minor hockey associations by Hockey Alberta. “Proper “age specific� training is vital to a young player’s future and the more who experience it the better.�

While the LTPD initiative is the focus, the message has to get to the hockey players’ caretakes — their coaches and parents. With this in mind, Hockey Alberta and the hockey camp are offering a comprehensive Coach Development Program throughout the summer.

Hockey Alberta and the Sylvan Lake and Jasper Hockey Camps, entered a pilot project last year to evaluate a partnership to deliver off season development in accordance with goals and aspirations of Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada.

That project led to a formal agreement that makes Sylvan Lake and Jasper Hockey Camps “endorsed licensees of player and coach development”.

“Sylvan Lake and Jasper Hockey Camps have always held values of proper development and have always tried to upgrade our on-ice and office programs to the most up-to-date training information and we feel privileged to help Hockey Alberta expand their delivery of the message of

proper age-specific long term player development,” said Parsons on his website.

The agreement gives the hockey camps “access to the very latest training material, training equipment and highly trained advisors to ensure that we can deliver the best product to our students”.

The announcement states, “Sylvan Lake and Jasper Hockey Camps have long been one of Western Canada’s largest providers of shoulder and off season development attracting students and their families from not only every corner of Alberta but nationally and internationally as well.

Through our knowledge of the management of the camp and through results of our pilot project partnership last year, we are asssured that this venture will play a significant role in not only providing proper age specific development to approximately 1,000 students per year but getting the “long term player development” message to a large portion of our membership.”

It’s amazing the worldwide interest this tragedy has attracted. The initial story, seen by over 25,000 people is by far the highest tally we’ve recorded in our history with the Facebook page.

Less than an hour after Sylvan Lake RCMP, firefighters, and ambulance personnel rushed to Sylvan Lake Arena about 1 a.m. Monday, pictures and information about the collapse of the roof were circulating around the world, through the Facebook page of Sylvan Lake News.

Two pictures, showing the demolished back wall and gaping holes in the roof where beams had fallen, were accompanied by comments from Mayor Sean McIntyre and Councillor Graham Parsons (who’s also the arena operator and head of Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey Camp) and other news.

By 10:30 Monday morning, more than 13,800 people had already seen the pictures and read the story.

That number continued to grow throughout the week.

At press time, Tuesday night, the initial story had been seen by over 25,000 people; an update was viewed by 2,906 people and a daytime picture had attracted 16,008 people.

Audiologist, Dr. Towers, Returns to Practice in Red Deer Dr. Towers, you’ve been an Audiologist in Red Deer since 2003. Where are you returning from?

I’m glad you asked. You are correct. I helped hundreds, if not thousands, of Central Albertans with hearing difficulty from 20032009. In 2009, I was asked to join one of the world’s largest hearing aid manufacturers and became the Chief of Audiology for their Canadian branch. I think it presents me with a set of knowledge and experiences that is tough to find. I spent a lot of time at the manufacturer’s world headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was my job to bring back technical knowledge and research from Denmark to the Canadian hearing health care providers. So I learned a tremendous amount about how hearing aids are made, why they can be so expensive and what goes into research, development and production of hearing aids. On top of that, I got to travel to hundreds of other Audiology clinics across Canada to teach them about the technology. The best part is I got to learn from them as much as they learned from me. So overall, there is no doubt, that these are experiences that can’t be gained in Universities and Colleges and are really unique in Canada, let alone Alberta.

It seems like the world of hearing clinics and hearing aids

has changed a lot. Is it just me or are there a lot of new clinics?

It has changed a lot, for a couple of reasons. The first would be that some clinics are now owned by manufacturers. Obviously those clinics have an interest in what technology they might recommend.

Secondly, the baby boomers change everything as they have in every industry since WWII. They have influenced industries from diapers, to minvans. It just so happens now that that age group is getting to the point where a reduction in hearing is becoming a reality.

RCMP NOTES

Driving related incidents resulted in charges against several people Saturday, January 11th 12:16 a.m. – RCMP were called to a disturbance on Falcon Close in Sylvan Lake. Witnesses advised that kids were yelling and running in the alley. A party was being held in the garage of a residence at the time and the property owner was advised of the noise complaint. It was confirmed that the youths were not involved in an altercation and were in the process of returning home.

5:26 a.m. – A 21-year-old Sylvan Lake male is facing a fine as a result of a single vehicle collision at Highway 11 and Range Road 15. A taxi driver reported that a truck was heavily damaged and sitting in a snowbank at the intersection with the male driver still inside the vehicle. Police attended and the male was found to be uninjured. There was no sign of intoxication however it was determined that the male was unable to complete the turn onto Range Road 15 due to speed. He was fined with driving at an unreasonable speed.

Wednesday, January 15th 12:28 a.m. – The owner of a vehicle on 47th Street in Sylvan Lake contacted RCMP after he witnessed a female trying to access his vehicle. The female was underdressed for winter conditions and appeared to be under the influence of a substance as she walked up and down the street trying to stay warm. The 27-year-old female was found by police at a nearby residence and she was determined to be

intoxicated. Occupants of the residence advised that they knew the woman and would ensure her safety for the evening.

9:58 p.m. – RCMP received a complaint of a possible impaired driver on Highway 11 west of Eckville heading towards Sylvan Lake. As a result of the tip, police stopped the vehicle at the Highway 11 and 60th Street intersection.

The driver was questioned and was found to be in possession of crystal meth and various drug paraphernalia. The male was on conditions not to possess illegal drugs. A 52-year-old male from Rocky Mountain House is now facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking; possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; failing to comply with an undertaking; driving an uninsured motor vehicle and other Traffic Safety Act violations.

Thursday, January 16th 9:46 a.m. – RCMP attended a location on Highway 11 at Range Road 10 after a report of four vehicles in the ditch. A constable attended to a driver whose truck was stuck in the ditch. The 34 year old male out of Edmonton advised that he was waiting for a tow truck. Upon further investigation, the member determined that the male was a suspended driver. As a result, the male was fined for driving while unauthorized and his vehicle was seized for thirty days.

- Paul Ventura, owner of Canadian Tire, Sylvan Lake, accepted a cheque for the Jumpstart program from Don MacKenzie, president of Sylvan Lake Seniors Association. The seniors collected $525.60 in donations during their two Christmas dinners and decided to donate the money to the Sylvan Lake Chapter of Jumpstart.

Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so children can participate in organized sport and recreation. Ventura said the Sylvan Lake branch helped 129 youngsters in its first year.

Many of you recognize the name of J. Hudson Taylor, who founded the China Inland Mission one hundred years ago. During the terrible days of the Boxer Rebellion, when missionaries were being killed and captured, he went through such an agony of soul that he could not pray. In the end 99% of life turns out to be humdrum, ordinary routine. It’s the same old thing day after day. Yet out of the humdrum God is weaving an unseen pattern that will lead us one day lead us in a new direction. Faith means taking the next step—whatever it is—and walking with God wherever he leads us. Sometimes it will make sense, other times it won’t. But we still have to take that step if we are going to do God’s will.

Adoniram Judson, the great 19th century missionary to Burma, lost two wives and several children to death in that difficult land. He saw very little fruit from his labors, and had many discouragements and setbacks.

Then a war between England and Burma broke out and Judson, being a foreigner, was imprisoned in squalid conditions. There, sick with fever, he received a letter from a friend who asked, “Judson, how’s the outlook?”

Judson penned his classic reply, “The outlook is as bright as the promises of God!”.

Dickson Store Museum planning 2014 exhibit, hosting annual meeting

In November we were back by popular demand to put on the play “The Poplar Grove Ladies Club” written by local playwright Laurie Hodges-Humble once more.

It was presented as a dinner theatre on Nov. 29th and a dessert theatre on Nov. 30th.

Both performances were very well received and people are already asking what we are going to do next year because they want to come.

We received government funding from Alberta Museums Association in the form

of the operational staffing grant and the exhibit on telephones. We also received us funding from the Museums Assistance Program for upgrading our computers and museum collection software.

As 2013 has come to a close we are planning for 2014 when we will be installing a new exhibit called “Communication Comes To Dickson”. We are looking for stories, memorabilia, photographs — anything that has to do with telephones. So if you worked at a mutual exchange, AGT, Telus etc. or if you had a party line or have anything you

Lions contributed to variety of organizations

With a donation to Bethany Care Foundation Monday night, Sylvan Lake Lions Club has presented donations totalling $36,620 from their bingo fund to various groups since last fall.

The money for Bethany supported the fundraising campaign by Bethany Sylvan Lake for purchase of a specialized tub/lift which is valued at approximately $43,700.

Other recipients of money raised by the Lions Club members have been, Lions Club International Foundation, Lions Foundation of Canada (dog

guides), Royal Alexander Hospital Foundation (eye research), Canadian Vision Care, Alberta Diabetes Foundation, Ride for Sight, STARS, Red Deer Hospice Society, Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter, Camp HeHoHa, The Lending Cupboard, Sylvan Lake Food Bank, Sylvan Lake Christmas Bureau, Parkland Youth Group Home (Equinox), Sylvan Lake Seniors’ Bus Association, Jazz At the Lake Festival Society and Sylvan Lake Lions Football (H. J. Cody Athletic Association).

At their meeting Monday, they also welcomed Carla Schneider and her service dog. The club had purchased a custom made leash and saddle bags for the dog last fall.

Joanne Toller, fund development associate with Bethany Care Foundation, accepted a donation from Sylvan Lake Lions Club presented by president Kay Bystrom at the club’s meeting Monday night. Rush placed out of top ten at Igls

Sunday’s World Cup races in Igls, Austria were not stellar for Sylvan Lake’s Lyndon Rush and his teammates.

In the four man bobsleigh competition, Rush, Lascelles Brown, Dave Bissett and Neville Wright placed 13th with a time of 1:42.87 which was just 0.65 seconds behind the leaders.

They were just behind the Canadian team of Justin Kripps, James McNaughton,

Tim Randall and Bryan Barnett who claimed 12th place with a time of 1:42.78.

Leading the Canadians in standings that day were Chris Spring, Jesse Lumsden, Cody Sorensen and Ben Coakwell who posted a time of 1:42.60, the fifth-fastest of the day.

Rush and Lascelles Brown were 12th in the two man competition with a time of 1:44.79 which was 1.07 seconds behind the leaders.

The top Canadian team of Justin Kripps and Bryan Barnettt claimed fifth

place with a time of 1:44.23 while Canadians Chris Spring and Jesse Lumsden claimed ninth with a time of 1:44.36.

Rush is in ninth place in World Cup two man bobsleigh rankings this season with 1104 points, just eight points lower than Chris Spring who holds eighth place, the highest ranking for Canada.

In the four man bobsleigh World Cup rankings, Rush sits in tenth position, Kripps is in ninth and Spring is fourth.

Katie Hillman, secretary and 4-H representative on Spruce View and District Agricuture Society said receiving the funding is “exciting”.

“It’s generating a lot of positive feedback,” she added. “We are very grateful for it.”

Hillman gave credit to everyone who helped make the video which was presented to UFA, especially event co-ordinator Connie Hobein, community member Chrissy Conway and Crystal Steeves.

A little creative genius and lots of enthusiasm and community spirit earned Spruce View Agricultural Society a nice chunk of change to help with much needed arena renovations.

The group was selected as the third $50,000 prize winner in UFA’s Rural from the Roots Up Get ‘n’ Give Contest. Their three-minute 41 second video produced using a cast of area residents, including four-year-old Benjamin Box and local singer-songwriter Crystal Steeves, proved to be a hit with the judges.

The community will use the prize money to make major repairs to the unsafe roof and fix the ventilation system at Diamond Jubilee Recreation Centre also known as Dickson Arena and Spruce View Arena. The facility is owned by Red Deer County.

The structure, built in 1979, has served as an all purpose facility, “Compassionate and Integrative Veterinary Care” and a venue for many community events including gymkhanas, 4-H, horse shows, men’s and ladies recreational hockey teams, minor hockey and figure skating. The school utilizes the facility to provide skating for their physical education classes and many Ryders Square Mall community meetings are hosted there.

But the building has fallen into a sad state of disrepair with rusty light sockets, a faulty ventilation system and leaky roof.

“Our roof is not properly insulated and there are holes in it as well. This allows moisture to collect and drip.

This is very expensive to repair and demands a large amount of our caretaker’s time. We need UFA to help us,” the ag society’s contest submission stated. “For our families … for our community … for our future … United Farmers of Alberta, help us keep our umbrellas where they need to be … outside.”

Cameron organizing Return to Normandy to mark 70th anniversary of D-Day

Allan Cameron is convinced he was born in the wrong era.

When he listens to the stories of Canada’s World War II and Korean veterans he hears them not only with his ears, but with his heart.

As they talk, he goes back there with them, to the days when they were young and brave and faced gunfire and dodged bullets, showing grit and courage, even though they walked hand-in-hand with fear and danger every day.

When they talk of their fallen comrades, tears running down their leathered cheeks, their eyes full of pain, their sadness tugs at his own heart strings.

And he knows their stories must be told, before it’s too late, before the great sacrifices they made remain buried forever.

To keep Canadian history alive and follow his own passion, Cameron has created a website called Veterans Voices of Canada.

Since 2006 he has recorded more than 700 interviews with veterans and has a waiting list.

“I’m a firm believer Remembrance Day should be every day, not just Nov. 11,” he said.

Cameron’s uncle, Perley Cameron, a D-Day veteran, gave him inspiration to keep going with his work. Sadly, his uncle passed away before he was able to complete an interview with him.

This year, the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the invasion of Europe, Cameron has formed a group called Return to Normandy 2014. The group is to consist of veterans from Nova Scotia Highlanders and North Nova Scotia Highlanders (World War II veterans) and re-enacters who will travel to France in June.

Also included in the group is volunteer BBC videographer Martin Jones as well as

Allan Cameron and Earl Jewers, North Nova Scotia Highlander Veteran in Truro, Nova Scotia at the showing of the documentary The Fighting North Novies; Into the Fire!

SUBMITTED the Nova Scotia producer Frank Clifford, who is volunteering his time towards the Nova Scotia production part of it.

“We are working on having videographers, reenactors and VIPs from Normandy attend and participate as well,” he said.

The group will travel to France in June to perform wreath laying and Remembrance ceremonies at several significant towns that the North Nova Scotia Highlanders (NNSH) were instrumental in liberating in the opening days of the invasion of

Europe.

The group will also perform Remembrance ceremonies at cemeteries and memorials including the Abbaye D-Ardenne where 13 NNSH’s were murdered in June 1944.

Also invited to be part of this journey is 1st Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders (N) RSM (ret) Ray Coulson of Amherst. Coulson has spent more than 20 years building, maintaining and promoting the regimental museum at the Col. James Layton Ralston Armouries in Amherst.

To help raise money for the Return to Normandy project, fundraising drives are ongoing and Cameron personally donated 1,000 DVDs of his production, The Fighting North Novies; Into the Fire.

“It (the DVD) is part of the story of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in Normandy in 1944. The story was inspired by my uncles who were NNSH’s (one is buried in France).”

The DVDs are available via Internet sales.

Donations and sponsorships are also encouraged.

All funds raised will got towards tour costs as well as accommodation and travel while in France to and from ceremonial tributes. Any leftover funds will be used to assist the regimental museum in Amherst with its historical displays.

A video tribute will be made of the journey.

Cameron said marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day is important.

“This initiative is more than likely our last chance to offer tribute to our D-Day veterans on the French soil having them beside us.”

Return to Normandy is a special dedication to the NNSHs, but all veterans are invited to take part.

“In the end, it is a tribute to all our veterans. We need to make them proud and understand that we are not going to forget what they did for us.”

Boom Chucka Boys nominated for five ACMA awards

A few years ago a group of musicians, just breaking into the industry, needed a name for their band.

They opted for The Boom Chucka Boys.

Guitarist Joel Rathjen voted against the name, but he was outnumbered.

“The other three wanted it and I guess it was the right choice. It’s pretty recognizable now.”

There is no doubt the name has become very well known and one would be hard pressed not to have at least heard of The Boom Chucka Boys.

The Sylvan Lake band has been nominated for Group of the Year, Fans’ Choice, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and the Rising Star Awards by the Association of Country Music in Alberta (ACMA).

Winners will be announced when the ACMA holds its third annual awards show on Saturday.

They are also signed to Gord Bamford’s Cache Entertainment label.

The band has combined their love of music with a great deal of natural talent, and attracted audiences far and wide with their unique style which encompasses country, rock n’ roll, gospel and a little bit of soul.

Inspiration for their music came from such musicians as Johnny Cash, Elivs Presley, CCR, The Band, Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley and Zac Brown Band.

When The Boom Chucka Boys formed their group they simply wanted to make music. The awards and recognition that followed have come as somewhat of a surprise.

“We are just normal guys trying to do our thing. It’s all trial and error, but we are just trying to make a career of music,” said Rathjen.

The popularity of the band has skyrocketed and in the past few years they have played extensively throughout Central Alberta, captivating audiences wherever they go with their collective electric energy.

Their debut album was produced by award winning producer/songwriter Byron Hill (who won a Canadian Country Music Award last year for the project along with Gord Bamford).

Their single, Find My Peace of Mind, was a Top 40 hit.

Rathjen said the band continues to “learn as we go”.

“We’ve been very fortunate. The recognition we have received has helped us get out and play. We’re very thankful. Many doors have opened for us and things have happened really fast.”

Rathjen and vocalist Ryan Langlois were the founding members of the band, combining their musical styles of pop rock and country. They were later joined by bassist Ted Roy Michaylow, who proved to be a popular addition with his stand-up bass style. Drummer Dave Grobe came on board a few years ago.

Life has put more than a few hurdles in the way of Rathjen’s own personal musical journey. His wife, Cristina was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer last year. The news came as a terrible shock to the couple who have two children, aged six and three.

After undergoing a double mastectomy, she is declared to be cancer free, but will still require chemotherapy.

“We’ve still got a hard few months to go,” Rathjen said.

Despite her illness, Cristina encouraged her husband to follow through with his band commitments, and even though it was extremely difficult at times, he managed to keep going.

“It’s what I was meant to do. It (music) always seems to find me again. And she has always been very supportive of that,” he said.

He is also grateful for the support from friends, musicians, their families and many others during the trying time his family has gone through.

Rathjen said his wife’s illness has taught them both not to be complacent about life and the blessings that it offers and how quickly it can all be taken away. He is looking forward to the new year and the band’s second album which will contain songs about love and the journey of life.

The Boom Chucka Boys will play at Big Valley Jamboree and Calgary Stampede and Rathjen is pretty sure they will perform for an event in Sylvan Lake this year.

“It is our home town and it’s always nice to do something here. I’m sure there will be something coming up.”

Variety of activities keeping 4-H members busy

Sylvan Lake 4-H Multi Club has had a very busy month.

We went to an Interclub public speaking workshop that was hosted

by Shadow Riders Club from Benalto, in December. Naomi Ackerman told

us the many important things to think about when preparing for our public speaking competition which is on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at H. J. Cody School. She explained that we needed to dress nicely, but are not allowed to use props. She said that we should learn our speech by heart, but have numbered cue cards with us in case

We had a project meeting in December where we made shortbread and sugar cookies. We also learned about how to take great pictures from guest speaker Shannon Carson who has a professional nature photography company in Sylvan.

In January we made spaghetti and started taking pictures from many different perspectives for our project. Some of the pictures were really close and we had to guess what the picture was of.

For social activities, our club went swimming and played water volleyball followed by dinner at Boston Pizza. More recently, we went skiing at Medicine Lodge Ski Hill. We had a great time, but the moms complained about being sore after. We have enjoyed getting to know our fellow 4-Hers and are looking forward to the rest of the year.

LANCTOT Richard (Rick) Roy 1944 - 2014 It is with great sadness that the family of Rick Lanctot announces his passing on January 11, 2014 at the age of 69. After a courageous battle with pneumonia, Rick passed away in his sleep with family by his side. Born in Melfort Saskatchewan, Rick lived life to the fullest.

He enjoyed curling, baseball, chuck wagons, water skiing, stock car racing, camping, bowling, and in his younger years boxing. He even played the drums and loved entertaining and travelling. He always had a new joke to share or some smart ass comment to make you laugh. Rick loved watching sports and was an avid SK Roughrider fan who knew all the stats. Sales was his lifelong career path, he could even sell ice to the Eskimos.

Rick enjoyed meeting new people. A great asset of Rick was his ability to socialize and would help anyone he could.
