Tips for maintaining proper nutrition The truism that you are what you eat becomes even more important as we grow older. A balanced diet that includes vegetables, protein, and moderate starches is the best medicine available to ensure healthy aging. While most seniors need fewer calories overall, each calorie must be made to count to ensure essential nutrients are consumed. Factors that could lead to seniors eating less well include: • Lack of a vehicle or mobility challenges, making it harder to shop for nutritious food • Increasing prices and a tight budget, leading to less appealing food choices
• Arthritis or less manual dexterity and strength or failing eyesight, which makes cooking more difficult • For those living on their own, less interest in preparing solitary meals.
The issue becomes even more acute for those seniors who are isolated. One study suggests that up to 44 per cent of the home-bound elderly population become malnourished due to an unbalanced diet. Other studies show that between a third and a half of the seniors who enter hospital are malnourished at the time of admittance. A senior who is suffering from malnutrition when entering hospital is likely to stay longer and have a poorer prognosis than a senior who has maintained good nutrition. Good nutrition is key to extending
Improvement In health and overall happiness is well documented when seniors enjoy a meal that includes the companionship and friendship of others.
life, maintaining independence and avoiding illness. For those with elders in their lives, ensuring the kitchen is well stocked with nutritious, easy to prepare meals is a priceless gift. If doing batch cooking, such as homemade stew or soups, consider making extra to freeze in meal-sized portions to give to a senior in your life. Another gift is making the time to drop by and share a meal: we are social animals and food tastes
better with company. For that reason, seniors or those who love them should seek out opportunities for potlucks and community meals. Not only do these shared meals provide variety and much better nutrition than tea-and-toast, but the occasion is as much about the company as about the food. Seniors who are able to cook but bored by the process can spice it up by forming a cooking circle to share the making of batch meals; taking a workshop on a foreign cuisine; or arranging regular come-todinner date exchanges with friends. The internet is also a great source of nutritional knowledge and recipes that can be both budgetfriendly and nutrient-rich. Some sites, such as allrecipes.com, provide a range of free tools for menu planning, including a huge database of recipes, shopping list, and a nifty tool that scales down favorite recipes to one or two portion servings. Meals on Wheels Penticton are another option to supplement meals for seniors who may have cooked for 65 years and are now ready to retire from the kitchen. Another solution for kitchen retirees is an independent living residence where served meals are included in the rent. Improvement in health and overall happiness is well documented when a senior enjoys not only a home cooked served meal, but also includes the companionship and friendship of others in a seniors housing community. Two ways to be active outdoors in winter Photography
Snowshoeing
The popularity of digital cameras never stops growing. These days most people have one, and those who don’t have one are probably thinking seriously about buying one. These wonderful little devices have led to an explosion of interest in photography, giving it an increasingly important place in daily life. During the winter season, why not go with the flow and take winter photos? Aside from the holiday season, during which everyone takes plenty of photos of family and friends, we generally tend to take most of our photos in the summertime. And yet, Canadian winters offer breathtaking landscapes that make the world’s leading photographers jealous. Whether snow-covered trees, forests against a winter background, frozen waterfalls or snow-capped mountains, there is no shortage of enchanting winter scenes in this country. Why not use your camera to enjoy the cold and the snow? It sure beats complaining about it.
Snowshoeing has been an efficient way of travelling across deep snow for a very long time. These days however, it is considered as a leisure activity more than a means of locomotion. But this is of little importance as this venerable activity still gives a lot of pleasure to outdoor enthusiasts, a pleasure accessible to all. Snowshoes are probably one of the oldest forms of transportation in snowy parts of the world. Many historians believe that they were invented more than four thousand years ago! Widespread among North American Indians, snowshoes were manufactured for a long time in the traditional manner; a web of leather straps stretched inside a strip of curved wood. These days however, modern mate-

With a digital camera, you have the advantage of being able to keep only your best photos, which means less waste. From now on you only have to develop the photos you’re proud of. You can frame your favourite photos and hang them on your walls or put them in photo albums you can browse through anytime. You could even design your own Christmas card this year.

rials such as aluminum, nylon and plastics have taken over to make contemporary snowshoes much lighter, less cumbersome and much more efficient. At the same time, using them has become easier and more enjoyable. After having lost its popularity to other winter sports such as skiing, snowshoeing has been growing in favour for several years now, notably because it is so accessible and reasonably priced. Indeed, the cost of a pair of snowshoes is still relatively inexpensive and this activity can be practiced in many different places at very little cost. Many areas, including municipal, provincial and national parks, have trails especially designed for snowshoeing, allowing for interesting excursions into the countryside as well as the discovery of often magnificent scenery.

Seasoned workers and professionals have a lifetime of experience and knowledge that has great value, and they know the time has come to transfer it to another generation. Young adults, have up-to-date education and job skills, but might lack long-term strategies to attain their goals. For both groups, there is a beneficial scenario that can bring them both just what they need: mentoring. For mentors, this kind of intergenerational exchange is an opportunity to transfer their professional legacy, accumulated over many years, to the next generation. It can be a source of fulfillment and stimulation during their last few years in the job market, all while allowing them to see things from a more youthful point of view. For mentorees, there is the advantage of a privileged relationship with someone who has already gone down that road. Their mentors are advisors who possess valuable networks of contacts and who can help them set professional priorities. Mentors can also help younger professionals avoid the traps and pitfalls that could hinder their rise to success or harm their work/ family balance. Some say the perfect balance of experience, wisdom, and dynamism is

acquired after the age of 50, although proven success in one’s field could make a good mentor of an adult of any age. Mentoring can take diverse forms; it could involve exchanging e-mails with a student who would like to join the same profession, giving specific help to a person during a period of transition, or cultivating a long-lasting relationship with someone through regular mentoring sessions or informal meetings. On one side of the scale, we have baby boomers approaching the end of their working lives, with lots of free time and few commitments. On the other side, we have a younger generation, too busy trying to stay afloat to be able to devote a lot of time to their children. Intergenerational co-operation is one obvious solution to this problem that is so typical of our times. Helping each other out has many advantages. For young people, spending time with seniors can bring a feeling of reassurance and comfort. They can learn more about where they come from, which can help them better discern which direction to take in life. For the baby boomers, this is the ideal occasion to pass on a rich and diverse heritage and to feel useful and young at heart.

Stay in great shape long after 65 No matter how old you are it is always possible to maintain or improve your health by adding some sort of physical activity to your routine. Better balance and a higher degree of independence are among the many benefits that seniors gain from exercise. Physical activity also tends to reduce the risk of falls and injury and helps prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type-two diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Best of all, it just makes people feel better. Start gradually but aim to do at least two and a half hours of moderate or intense physical activity every week. Any exercise that lasts longer than ten minutes counts.
7
Biking and brisk walking are considered to be moderate activities if your heart rate increases and you are capable of talking but not singing while you are moving. Intense physical exercise includes jogging and cross-country skiing. During this kind of activity, you need to catch your breath after a few words because of an increased heart rate. Don’t forget to strengthen your muscles and your bones with twice weekly sessions of an activity such as stretching, yoga, walking, weights, climbing stairs, and sit-ups or push-ups. These will invigorate your heart and mind. Get in the habit of looking for opportunities to do some exercise, whether it means going to the park with your grandchildren, walking up the stairs instead of taking an escalator, walking to and from the grocery store instead of going by car, or getting off the bus a few stops from home. Even if you’re not used to it now, you’ll soon see that exercise can be a real source of enjoyment. Penticton Regional Hospital Auxiliary’s

exercise also important for seniors with limited mobility Exercise is important for all people, including the elderly. Yet, seniors who have limited mobility or are confined to a wheelchair may think they couldn’t possibly exercise. However there are many things such individuals can do to stay in shape -- all while sitting down. Doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of daily exercise for most people. Exercise is beneficial for seniors because it keeps muscles from atrophying, improves mental alertness, strengthens bones, and leads to a healthier metabolism, among other things. For seniors who think they won’t be able to handle traditional exercise, chair exercises or modified pilates can be effective, even for those with trouble walking or standing for extended periods of time. To get started, all one needs is some loose-fitting clothing and a chair. Begin by doing some stretching movements of the neck, arms and legs. Rotate the head left and right and in circles to stretch the neck and back muscles. Lift arms over the head and slowly drop down to the sides of the body to stretch arms and back muscles. Lift and lower the legs a few times to warm them up. To begin exercises, start slowly and gradually build up repetitions. Exercises to try include boxing or punching into the air, arm circles, and arm curls. For the legs, work the back and front
of the legs. Kick the legs out in front of the body several times. Hold legs parallel to the floor (as much as possible) and do leg crosses. Put feet flat on the floor and lift up the heels. Keep feet on the floor and push down to work the buttocks and the top of the thighs. Individuals who have mastered these exercises and have been told by a doctor that it is OK to do something a bit more strenuous may want to add very light weights to the equation for more resistance. Two or five pound weights are all that’s needed to give muscles even more of a workout. Those looking to change things up from day to day can think about doing yoga in a chair or even tai chi exercises. Deep breathing and meditation after workouts can be part of a cool down and stress-relief program. If swimming is possible, or even simply entering a pool, water provides gentle resistance and could be a good way to work the body in a gradual manner. Buoyancy from the water will be easy on joints and this type of exercise is very low-impact. Remember to always consult a doctor before beginning any type of exercise regimen, be it with a personal trainer or on your own. The doctor can discuss which type of exercises may be safe.
