Call 8-1-1 for advice on influenza care It is influenza season and many with flu-like symptoms may be wondering about the best way to seek medical

attention. If you have influenza, you can be highly infectious and an unnecessary visit to the emergency room, clinic

or doctor’s office, could put others at risk. Calling 8-1-1 from the comfort of home provides 24-hour access to professional medical advice while also helping reduce the spread of the flu. When you call 8-1-

1, you will speak to a health services representative who will direct your call to a registered nurse. Registered nurses are available at any time of the day or night, every day of the year. They are able to assess your symptoms over

the phone and advise if you need to be visiting your doctor or going to the hospital. Translation services are also available upon request in more than 130 languages. 8-1-1 is a free-ofcharge health informa-

tion and advice phone line available in British Columbia. The 8-1-1 phone line is operated out of HealthLink BC, which is part of the Ministry of Health. 8-1-1 provides a number of additional services including access to pharmacists, dieticians and health service representatives who can help you find the closest services to where you live.

We encourage British Columbians, who are otherwise healthy, to call 8-1-1 before heading to a health care facility or calling an ambulance and to remember that the best way to stop the spread of the flu is to wash your hands and stay home if you feel sick.

Caution urged on Lake Windermere ice Submitted With unpredictable conditions on parts of Lake Windermere, the Windermere Fire Department is urging the public to use caution on the ice. The Fire Department says the ice thickness is not consistent, particularly where water enters the lake from creeks or streams. “The ice conditions can change dramatically within short distances. While the ice is 15” or thicker in many areas, it can be five inches or less in others. We are urging everyone who uses and recreates on the Lake to use common sense and caution, especially in areas like the mouth of Windermere Creek where ice can be very

thin due to the incoming fresh water,” says Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Service Fire Chief Jim Miller. Fresh water inlets are not the only potential danger. There are areas all over the lake, where things like rotting vegetation can create methane holes. Thin ice can also happen close to shore where people are riding bikes, ATV’s, skiing, fishing, skating and walking. “Over the past few weeks, there have been at least eight different incidents where vehicles of different sizes have broken through the ice,” said Miller. “We are lucky that no one has been seriously injured or worse.”

Fundraising continues to final goal—17 stars lit at the hospital Submitted With the New Year upon us East Kootenay Foundation for Health is proud to share that it’s Starlite Campaign with a goal of supporting and strengthening health care initiatives made one of its first campaign goals. The 6th annual campaign had two major goals –with the public’s help light all 17 stars and raise $150,000 to support community health care initiatives to improve and better address needs for communities throughout the East Kootenay. On December 24 the first goal was met when the EKRH Starmakers lit the sky with 17 stars (and one surprise on top) along the roof line of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The 17 stars represent either a designated gift

of $5,000 or an accumulation of public donations. “The early lighting of the stars is just an incredible testament to the commitment of many people, service clubs and organizations with a desire to support health care facilities in their community,” explains Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. Those graciously lighting up the stars before the holiday break are: 1. Eagles Nest RV Resort 2. Key City Oldtimers Hockey Club 3. Kimberley Dynamiters & Abreast in the Rockies Dragonboat Association 4. Kimberley Health Care Auxiliary 5. Kimberley Heath Care Auxiliary 6. Kimberley Heath Care Auxiliary

Public Donations In fact, the response to the community focused Starlite Campaign has been so overwhelming that EKFH and its Starmakers are beginning to plan on how to expand the number of stars for lighting in the coming years. An act of surprise done for the foundation

Seeing the stars shining brightly remind us that through your generous support you can help light a path for others. Every dollar counts. The campaign has just

EKFH and Ice say thanks with bobble heads

Family honours daughter’s wishes Even though it is one of the most difficult times of their life, Michelle Evans and Laine Evans of Cranbrook recently reached out to East Kootenay Foundation for Health to fulfill a wish of their daughter. Regrettably their 18-year old daughter Kassy’s young life ended much too soon. During this difficult time Michelle and Laine learned more about their daughter and her desire to give back to her community and specifically health care. A simple line of written words from this beautiful young woman indicated that she would

now seems to have been a coincidence of recognizing the generosity of giving. It seems the EKRH Starmakers had a plan of their own this year by building, lighting and erecting an extra large single star at the highest point on the roof at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The single star with its brilliant blue lighting could be seen from various areas of the town and beautifully symbolizes the overall focus of the Starlite Campaign. In hindsight, the surprise for the foundation is incredible but that star now stands for and represents all those accumulated gifts over and above those given to light the traditional 17 stars. Thanks to so many who have invested in health care for their community, to the

East Kootenay Foundation for Health and the Kootenay ICE are preparing to say thanks to ICE fans for their continued support of the Starlite Campaign. In early December EKFH put out a call for fans to show their Starlite appreciation by making a donation to the campaign in honour of #23 Sam Reinhart. Whether it was a gift sent to EKFH or a donation made at the ICE office or at the recent Denham Ford “Shoot for the Truck” event hockey fans showed their true generosity by making total donations of $5,322.17 to the Starlite Campaign in tribute to the talented

player. In return at the February 1, 2014 home game, East Kootenay Foundation for Health will show its appreciation to the Kootenay ICE and all the players (past and current) who have supported the foundation by offering the first 950 fans through the main entrance doors a Sam Reinhart bobble head. With a limited number available the unique item will be given out in an orderly fashion with a lineup of first come first available bobble heads based on one per person per paid ticket. The lineup and distribution will take place at the former skate sharpening location (inside rink access) at Western Financial Place.

Volunteers from EKFH, the Kootenay ICE Fan Club and the Knights of Columbus will be on hand to guide fans through the process. The attention may be on #23 but in true fashion the Kootenay ICE organization, its many players and its fans have long stood behind health care and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health. To date, including these recent gifts, Kootenay ICE events has realized $42,293.29 in financial support for health care. What’s not as easy to capture is the number of smiles the players have brought to the hospital during their annual Christmas visits or involvement at one of the many fundraising

events. Stars and bobble heads an unlikely match but one that works magic here in the East Kootenay. Get your game tickets early (Kootenay ICE office at 250 417-0322) and we’ll see you at the rink.

Team Kimberley podium in Fernie Submitted On the weekend of January 11 to 12, the Kimberley Alpine Team (KAT) led by coach Jon Blair, hit the slopes with great results. Following on the heels of their stellar results in Apex, the team travelled to Fernie. They endured tough weather conditions while they competed in the disciplines of giant slalom (GS) and slalom. The weekend not only saw a field of 140 racers competing but it was of particular importance to the team’s three U14 athletes who were vying for a spot on the Kootenay Zone Team for the BC Winter Games. All three of the Kimberley Alpine Team’s U14 athletes were successful and now will be travelling to Hemlock Valley Mountain to compete in alpine events later in February. In the U16 competition, Zoe Chore took home 1st place in the GS and Andrea Lockhart had two bronze medals in the slalom and placed 12th in the GS.

His teammate, Ethan Blair also had five top ten finishes with a 3rd and 4th in the GS and a 4th and two 5th place finishes in the slalom. On the girls’ side of U14, Emma Damm returned home with an 11th and 12th

place spot in the GS and a 6th and two 11th place finishes in the slalom events. The team will be holding a club race this upcoming Sunday (January 19, 2014) where kids 5 to 16 years of age will have a dual GS race. After the race, there will be a BBQ and great prizes for all of them. Following this weekend, the team will travel to Fairmont for a competition for the younger athletes aged 5-10 followed by another Zone Race in Red Mountain for the

athletes aged 10-16. It promises to be exciting weekends for the team once again. Ski Hard, Ski Fast, Enjoy! thyroid gland

Visits to the dentist for a dental exam and cleaning are recommended for every six months, but dentists could modify the frequency of these visits. When women become pregnant they should inform their dentist and pay particular attention to their oral health.

Anyone who is suspected of suffering hearing loss or an ear problem will be referred to an audiologist for an evaluation. Hearing loss can be caused by aging, genes, ear infections, ear disease, or exposure to high noise levels.

If you think that your thyroid gland is not functioning properly, take note of your symptoms (weight gain, depression, loss of concentration, weight loss, excess energy, hot flashes, heart palpitations, or trembling) and consult your doctor. A thyroid disorder can be detected with a simple blood test.

Adults aged 20 to 39 years old should undergo an eye examination every two to three years. For people aged 40 to 64 years old, every two years is recommended, and those 65 and older should have their eyes examined on an annual basis.

Vaccinations

aBdomen

An electrocardiogram (ECG) could be recommended if you are suffering from arrhythmia, chest pains, or palpitations. This test checks for problems by measuring the heart’s electrical activity.

intestines

Some childhood vaccinations, such as tetanus, do not provide lifelong protection. Adults require repeat doses in order to maintain their immunity. Seasonal flu shots should be administered every year to those at risk.

Consult your doctor if you have unusual symptoms, abdominal pain, suffer from constipation or diarrhea, or if you have unexpectedly lost weight. Several tests could be recommended.

Blood

Among other things, the doctor should check for hypertrophy of the spleen and liver.

Breasts A mammogram (an X-ray of the breast tissue) is the most efficient method of detecting breast cancer. It is recommended that women aged between 50 and 69 years of age have a mammogram every two years. The advantage of having regular mammograms for women in other age groups is uncertain.

Ideally, blood pressure should be checked once a year. You can ask your doctor for a complete blood evaluation, which involves an analysis of a blood sample to evaluate the number and quality of red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets. Lastly, keep in mind that it is your age, health, and family history of cardiovascular disease that determine how often you should have your blood cholesterol levels checked.

chest The doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your heart and lungs. He or she will ensure that your heart rate is normal.

Bones

reproductiVe system

Osteoporosis is detected by means of a bone density test or DEXA scan; the technology used is called quantitative computed tomography. Who should undergo this test? Everyone over 65; those aged between 50 and 64 who are at risk of fractures; and those younger than 50 who suffer from a disease related to bone loss or who have low bone density.

It is important for women to undergo regular pelvic examinations (also known as gynecological examinations). A pelvic examination could also be necessary if there are unusual vaginal secretions or bleeding or if pelvic pain is present.

skin Brown marks, lesions, bumps, skin rashes, and beauty spots that have changed colour or size should be pointed out to your doctor.

Brain Maybe you exercise to tone your thighs, build your biceps, or flatten your belly. Maybe you work out to ward off the big killers like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. But how about sweating to improve your mind? Exercise is the single best thing you can do for your brain in terms of mood, memory and learning!

If you’re at risk of diabetes (family history, obesity, and high blood pressure) your doctor can check if there has been any loss of feeling in certain areas of the foot.

Home Improvement and Renovations You can give your home the look of masonry with decorative bricks Submitted

Decorative bricks (or faux bricks) are more affordable than regu lar bricks and are gai ning in popularity as a decorative element for homes. And best of all, you don’t have to be a qualified stone mason in order to lay them. PrePArAtion Decorative bricks are usually laid on ply wood or plasterboard. Clean the underlying surface thoroughly and apply a primer if

ne cessary. in some cases, the addition of a layer of wire mesh may be necessary. it goes without saying that the wall surface or floor should be level before you begin work. instAllAtion spread the glue with a notched trowel over one small area at a time, starting at the bottom of the wall. Place the bricks, leav ing an equal space between each of them and ensuring that the joints are offset from

one row to the next. Check frequently to ensure that the row of bricks is level. Use a miter saw fitted with a ceramic blade for cutting the bricks at the end of the rows. recuperate the rem nants to start a new row. Brick corners, used to cover the cor ners of three dimen sional objects, such as those on a mantelpiece, are also available on the market. now all that’s left to do is to fill the joints with mor

tar according to the manufacturer’s instruc tions. Apart from the tradi tional red brick, many models and colors of decorative stones are available in stores. to find the best product for your project, as well as the appropriate installation technique, be sure to ask a profes sional for advice.

If you have a little time and are precise with your work, it is not too difficult to install decorative bricks in your home. Make sure to have all the necessary tools before you start.

Home Improvement and Renovations Repurposing some of those odds and ends to add style to your home • create garden furni ture with bricks paint ed in your choice of colour • transform a work bench into a kitchen work surface

there is no shortage of ideas. And if you don’t succeed at first, don’t hesitate to give it another go — the more you try, the bet ter you’ll become. so,

don’t discard your old stuff, just repurpose it into something new and useful.

Repurposing is taking something you already own and turning it into something beautiful to add style to your home. Submitted

it is easy and fun to rescue all kinds of objects destined for the landfill and modify their purpose for your home. What a great way to renovate, all while being ecofriend ly at the same time! “repurposing” entails standing in front of a feature of your home that you no longer want and asking yourself what else you could do with it. Finding the answer means truly setting aside its initial purpose; you have to forget about its origi nal form and role in order to give free rein to your imagination. it is a great creative exercise for your brain, one that can give some interesting results. Here are a few repurposing projects: • transform a door into a low table • convert glass bottles into light fixtures • turn kitchen utensils into a lamp • remove the drawers of a dresser to make bookshelves • dress up a bucket with fabric and decora tive ribbons and fill it with flowers • turn an old chest of drawers into a planter

What are you waiting for?

by Menno Dueck Want a project done this year? Then crawl out of hibernation, call your favorite contractor and get on his “to do list” now! Successful contractors understand organization and timing is crucial in an industry fraught with circumstances beyond their control. The earlier the planning process begins, the better able your contractor can manage those circumstances and bring your project to a timely completion. The longer it takes to firm up his “to do list”, the harder it is for the contractor to obtain qualified labour; workers go where the work is or even change industries if he cannot offer solid employment. Construction workers are being siphoned off into the mining and oil and gas sectors at an alarming rate leaving labor shortages which tend to drive up the cost and time frame of projects. Drawings and permit applications play a major role in a start date. Drawings, particularly engineered drawings, can take a month or more. Permit applications, using the City of Cranbrook as an example, can be problematic. Their building permits have an automatic two week process, often much longer, regardless of the complexity of the project. Development permits can be quite detailed and lengthy, and variance applications can be stalled for months, as the city’s Board of Variance only meets four times/ year, and both applications may

require city council approval. Low supplier inventory creates its own set of hold ups. A small bathroom reno can get put on hold for 6 weeks or more while the contractor waits for an ordered tub to arrive from the manufacturer, stalling tile and flooring installation, paint and trim. Stair railing on back order can stop an occupancy permit. Having trades available when needed is key to keeping a project flowing. Trades are constantly shifting their schedules to accommodate the unknown and while committed to a project, may not be able to show up as required; a great source of frustration for both owner and contractor. Irregular delivery schedules are a definite trade off for living in the East Kootenay. Kitchen cupboards ordered through a local firm, and built in Toronto, were shipped to a Calgary trucking depot to be transferred to a delivery run to Cranbrook. Instead, they ended up in Vancouver where they sat for almost two weeks before finally arriving here. Everyone wants their project to run as smoothly as possible. So do your part. Stop procrastinating, start planning, and call your contractor today. What are you waiting for? Candida related complex When I graduated from naturopathic school I did not appreciate how common or influential Candida overgrowth is. At that time, our training simply did not address this incredibly common health problem. Over the last 16 years I have come to realize that many people suffer Candida-related complex (CRC) and don’t know it. Candida is a type of yeast that normally grows on the skin and throughout the digestive and genitourinary system. When this organism overgrows it can cause a variety of symptoms which, more often than not, go unidentified and untreated. CRC should be differentiated from a systemic Candida infection, which can be a life-threatening infection that only occurs in people with severely compromised immune systems. Candida related complex might occur after you take antibiotics, eat too much sugar, use birth control pills or have diabetes. Symptoms include depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, headache, poor memory, bloating, diarrhea, menstrual disturbances, PMS, mood disorders, acne, itchy skin, food sensitivity and sugar craving. If the underlying over-

growth is not treated, no amount of dietary change, medication or nutritional supplementation will help. Candida overgrowth must be directly treated with medication that either kills the organism or prevents it from reproducing. Using probiotics like acidophilus will not eliminate CRC due to the ability of Candida to anchor itself right into the wall of the tissue it is growing on. There are a variety of approaches to treating Candida, some of them extreme. The Candida diet is a very limited diet that serves to starve the yeast of simple sugars that fuel growth. It can be a real challenge to follow. I find that using a natural medicine called 10-undecenoic acid (from castor oil) or an enteric oregano oil (in tablet form only) and limiting sugar, avoiding food sensitivities and fruit juice works well over time. Don’t be surprised if you feel worse before you feel better. As the yeast die off you will go through a detoxification process that might be rough, causing headaches, fatigue or simply a worsening of your current symptoms. Persist, and you will feel much better.

2014 Infiniti Q50 challenges the old order Infiniti has had a bit of an identity crisis over the past year with a wholesale change in the way it names its products. Gone is the JX crossover, it’s called the QX60 now and the G 37 sedan has been replaced with the Q50 sedan. Q signifies for cars and QX for crossovers or SUVs. The outgoing G37 was already a very worthy on-road performer but a bit too simplistic in the inside. Now, Infiniti has taken things up a notch with the Q50, adding a dynamic look, sumptuous interior and class leading technology. Looks It could be argued that the current BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class are a bit conservative, while this Q50 and the major competitor, Lexus IS, are much edgier. This is especially true with the front grille. The rest of the Q50 is nicely sculpted, with flowing lines and an almost elegant rear end. Sold as a base model, sport trim, all wheel drive (AWD), premium, and even a hybrid, there is a broad market for this sedan. Starting at $37,500 and ramping up to the AWD sport model at $49,950, there is a substantial discount with the Q50 when you compare it to a similarly equipped BMW. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels but most of the higher trim levels are equipped with 19-inch wheels. The car seen here is the AWD premium model starting at $43,400.

Verdict The benchmark in the premium compact sedan market has been the BMW 3 Series but the gap is narrowing. This new Q50 looks great, has a wonderful interior, power to spare and solid

handling dynamics. On price, the BMW 328i AWD is the closest and starts at $46,200 but is equipped with a 241hp 4-cylinder. The direct competitor on power is the much more expensive 335is AWD. The Lexus IS350 AWD is another premium offering from Japan, and it starts at a very competitive $44,000. As much as the Japanese automakers like to challenge the German makers, they really end up competing with each other. Yes, this is a worthy car but the one thing you cannot factor into the buying decision is the badge appeal that storied brands like Mercedes, BMW and Audi provide.

OF THE WEEK:

What is your favourite brand of car and what model specifically do you like? Please explain why you have made that decision.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK!

When extreme winter road conditions hit, it’s a good idea to think about whether you even need to get behind the wheel. If you have the option, consider public transit or carpool with some who has a vehicle prepared for the conditions. Also consider leaving for work just a little later to allow crews to clear the roads.

Five fun coupes for singles

‘‘

Alexandra Straub

So, you’re not married. That’s okay! You don’t have kids? No worries. You pretty much have the pick of the litter when it comes to buying a car. Why? Because you don’t necessarily have specific requirements that need to be met when selecting a vehicle. Meaning, you don’t need to consider having a large enough backseat to fit car seats, unless you want a big back seat for other reasons. Like, you have a dog that weighs as much as an adult. Or you don’t need four doors because you’re pretty much the only one going to be inside the cabin at any given time. Unless your profession requires you to haul around equipment or gear, you don’t have to buy a crossover, minivan, sedan or SUV if you don’t want to. That said, many singles I know decide to get something a little less “practical” in the grand scheme of things. Less practicality is usually spelled with five letters: coupe. So, to those individuals who are the alpha of their one-person wolf pack, here are a few coupes under $30K to consider. Honda Accord Coupe:

Base MSRP $26,400 I’m starting off with the

Accord because it’s a cool car. The current generation has so much going for it and definitely has developed more personality in the redesign. You have the option of two engines: a more economical 2.4L 4-cylinder or a more powerful 3.5L V6. Either way, you can get them equipped with a 6-speed manual or a CVT transmission. Only the EX-L Navi trim with the V6 has the option of a 6-speed automatic transmission. No matter how you slice it, you’re getting a great car. Better yet, it has a decent cargo capacity of 379L so you could easily dump your hockey gear inside. The interior is spacious and comfortable, and heck, it looks good. MINI

Coupe/Roadster:

Base MSRP $25,950/$28,900 With room for two, even the base model of MINI Coupe or Roadster is a hoot. Specs-wise, it has the least impressive engine of the lot (only putting out 121 horsepower,) but that can be overlooked because of via driving dynamics. It has one of the best manual gearboxes for a car of its size and has an abundance of pep. They’re not cheap, though. So it has that working against it in some regards. And you could argue that a Mazda MX-5 is a better value (you won’t be wrong) but it’s still loads of fun.

Dodge Challenger Fun from page B2 Dodge Challenger: Base MSRP $26,995 If you’re driving a Dodge Challenger, you’re getting noticed. You don’t even need to have the grunt and roar of the SRT’s 6.4L V8 HEMI to turn heads. Inside and out, this two-door has style and power. The base SXT trim comes equipped with a 3.6L V6 and 305 horsepower. Kia Forte Koup: Base MSRP $20,550 For just over $20K, the Kia Forte Koup is a solid value. And it’s not a bad looking car either. Inside, the inte-

rior is well finished and isn’t cheap. Furthermore, you have many great standard amenities that come with the base model like 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated front seats, remote keyless entry, air conditioning and more. VW GTI: Base MSRP $29,375 The 3-door VW GTI is one of my favourite cars. The front-wheel, German engineered bundle of excitement has poise and pizzazz, along with a fabulous interior and a tried and tested engine. What’s great about the GTI

Kia Forte Koup

is that it works for all ages. You could be 16 and driving it, or 60, and you’d still look good. You wouldn’t look out of place and people would give you nods of approval. Granted, the current generation is on its way out and the seventh generation (2014 model year) is coming soon. So if you want a killer deal on a 2013, now’s about as good of a time as any. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Off-road performance: with on-road comforts

Pic of the week A concept sedan worthy of a Formula One race track Infiniti has revealed its Q50 Eau Rouge concept at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It’s a high-performance design concept based on Infiniti’s Q50 premium sports sedan, that draws inspiration

for aerodynamic design from the technical collaboration between Infiniti and four-time Formula One World Champions Infiniti Red Bull Racing. Major bodywork components have been redesigned with aerodynamics in mind and manufactured carbon fibre. Q50 Eau Rouge is lower and wider – only the roof and door profiles remain un-

Ian Harwood

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid is on a quest, to get your family where you need to go on as little fuel as possible. Looks: One of the biggest changes last year was the switch from body-on-frame to a unibody construction. This reduced the overall weight, which makes a big difference on the fuel economy. The shape and design characteristics of this truck have changed, much smoother lines, and more aerodynamic. I remember the first Pathfinder introduced in 1986 and aimed at capturing some of the Toyota 4runner buyers. It looked promising but never completely took off. I think the focus was more on the off-road when it should have been more on-road with the ability to travel off-road. This version

has done this, taking design cues and comfort from the Nissan Rogue and creating a larger crossover capable of transporting seven. In The Cab: My tester was the Platinum edition. It came equipped with leather seats with 8 way power adjustability, 4 way power for the front passenger, EZ flex seating system with 2nd row 60/40 split fold-flat bench seat, and 3rd row 50/50 split fold flat reclining bench seat. The leather wrapped steering wheel is heated and is a nice feature. There is plenty of wood tone trim but it is not overdone, giving it a rich feel. Bose audio system with 13 speakers, AM/FM/CD, SiriusXM, auxiliary audio input jack, USB connection, streaming audio via Bluetooth, steering wheel mounted audio controls and speed sensitive volume control and just some of the comforts you will find in the Pathfinder Platinum. The around view monitor uses four cameras to create a composite image from above and displays it on the touch screen monitor. This helps show the vehicle’s position relative to the lines around the parking space and guides you in easily. Safety first: Nissan’s advanced airbag system include, dual stage front airbags, driver and front passenger seat mounted side impact, and roof mounted curtain side impact airbags with rollover sensor. Traction control (TSC) and vehicle dynamic control (VDC) are standard on all models. Power: The engine is a 2.5-litre 4 cylinder with a 15kw, power regenerating electric motor,

powered by lithium-ion cells and a dual clutch system that transfers power from the electric motor and the engine. This system generates 250 hp. The transmission is Xtronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) The All-mode 4x4 I-system allows select ability between 2WD, Auto, or 4WD lock. An independent front strut and multi-link rear gives the vehicle a comfortable ride. Pump frequency: 7.8/7.1 L/100 km (city/ highway) as tested Warranty support: Basic coverage 3year/ 60,000 kms Powertrain 5 years/100,000 kms Corrosion surface 3 years/ 60,000 kms Roadworthy: This vehicle does remind me of the Nissan Rogue. It is larger but feels very similar and that’s a good thing. I think Nissan is heading in the right direction with this vehicle. If studies show limited use off-road, then why spend money making this an off-road vehicle? It has the ability to drive down a gravel road or up to the ski hill but Nissan has made sure it is also as comfortable as a road car and as fuel-efficient as it can be.

Big on space, safety and performance, Cruze is probably the best compact car ever made by Chevrolet.

Bob McHugh

’’

The Chevrolet Cruze was already a winner in Europe and Asia, before it cruised into Canada for the 2011 model year. Cruze continued its winning ways by adding the prestigious 2011 Canadian Car of the Year Award, presented by the Automobile Journalist’s Association of Canada (AJAC) to its trophy cabinet. The base LS edition of Cruze comes with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine and the Eco, LT and LTZ editions come with a Ecotec 1.4-litre turbocharged-four that delivers more power at low engine speeds, yet provides similar fuel economy. The transmission choice offered was either a six-speed manual or a sixspeed automatic. Clever aero tweaks, including active front grille shutters, help the Cruze Eco slice through air on low rollingresistance tires. Weight saving initiatives (right down to the size and location of body welds) also trim 97 kg (214 lbs.) from its total body mass. A taller sixth overdrive gear allows additional highway fuel savings and an impressive official FE rating of 7.8/5.4 L/100 km (city/highway) with the manual transmission.

Secrets of the original Volkswagen Beetle

‘‘

The Beetle was the subject of one of the most influential ad campaigns of the 20th century.

Rob Sass

’’

The original air-cooled VW Beetle lasted an incredible 58 years in production, during which time it was fundamentally unchanged. It’s a record that will likely never be approached, let alone broken. Although nearly everyone of a certain age has at least one Beetle story or fond memory, there are a few things still not generally known about the beloved car. Here are five noteworthy facts: 1. The original classic Beetle didn’t leave production until 2003, although it was last sold

in North America in 1979 (by which time the water-cooled Rabbit had replaced it), the original air-cooled Beetle was produced in Puebla, Mexico, until 2003. It’s essentially identical to the cars produced in Germany for export to the U.S. in the 1970s. 2. The original Beetle was the brainchild of Adolf Hitler. Keen to put ordinary Germans on the newly constructed autobahn superhighways in their own cars, a subsidized savings plan involving a coupon booklet was devised. When a family filled their booklet, they were supposed to get their car. WWII intervened and all pre-war Beetle deliveries were limited to Nazi party officials. Private owners didn’t get their hands on a Beetle until after the war. 3. Germans don’t remember it as fondly as we do because of its connection with the dictator who brought ruin to their country. And it serves as

Mayhem on the Texas autobahn By Keith Morgan

Austin, Texas: Road hogs are a common sight at dusk here on the so-called Texas autobahn. I’m not talking about those crazy drivers transported by four-wheeled vehicles but those of the four-legged variety – boars! And just like the two-legged, lead-footed variety, the clovenhoofed wild pigs cause crashes – four bad smashes on the first night that the high speed State Highway 130 toll road opened back in October 2012. Last week, I wrote about a drive on the no-speed limit autobahn from Munich to Berlin. The piece was prompted by the recent Insights West/ Black Press poll about increasing speed limits on highways in BC. I just had to try out the North American equivalent of the autobahn with its 85 mph limit (approximately 137 km/h) and here are my observations. After driving a sporty Audi S6 on the toll highway from Austin on a day trip to San Antonio, I think there must have been more boars than cars on the route for long stretches. It was a lonely daytime drive in the S6 with very few cars passing in either direction. In terms of scenic interest, it is as disappointing as a mild chilli pepper in a bowl of Tex-Mex. It’s not that the tolls are high on the 65-kilometre stretch I travelled on the 210-kilometre route – less than $10, under $30 for commercial trucks. It’s just that the 85 mph limit is just not fast enough to encourage people to use it for what is a fairly short distance

between those two major centres. And that’s especially so, when the posted speed limit on the regular toll-free state highways was raised to 75 mph (120 km/h) shortly after the turnpike was opened. The main section is also well to the east of Austin so there was a trek before I could unleash the horses under the hood. It would help to hike the limit another 10 mph (16 km/h): It’s a very well-engineered road and I can’t see that causing carnage. At the risk of attracting the interest of a Texan posse bent on a hanging, I might suggest that a reduction of the limit in the same magnitude on the regular highways might dramatically increase custom along the way. The only positive I can say is that I maintained the top legal speed for the length of the trip, which, as I reported last week, was impossible on the congested no-speed limit autobahn between Munich and Berlin. The growing network of toll roads in central Texas may have the highest speed limits in the nation but unless they ultimately stretch to Houston and/or Corpus Christi on the Gulf coast, it’s hard to imagine the operators emerging from the billion-dollar financial quagmire. The Department of Transportation has ended a rebate that had allowed trucks to use the road for the same price as cars since last April. That disincentive is likely to increase the red ink. keith.morgan@drivewaybc. ca

a reminder of the lean times before the West German economic miracle took hold meaning post-war Germans don’t have the same warm and fuzzy feelings about the Beetle that American ex-hippies do. 4. The Beetle may have been inexpensive, but it was never cheap. Gaps were tight and doors sealed well. Additionally, it was a unibody car with a very flat floor with few openings. All of this meant that the car would actually float for at least several minutes after hitting the water before turning into a small sub!

5. The Beetle was the subject of one of the most influential ad campaigns of the 20th century. Most recently lampooned on the TV show “Mad Men,” it was among the first national campaigns to utilize irony and self-deprecating wit. A tiny black-and-white photo of a Beetle in a sea of white space with only the headline “Think Small” was the first of the ads introduced in 1959 by the agency Doyle Dane Bernbach.
