$500,000 computer software can assist firefighters

The Kelowna Fire Department says the addition of specialized new software—to cost the city just under $500,000 to buy and operate over the next three years—will help it make better decisions when responding to fires and planning for the future.

KFD chief Jeff Carlisle and deputy chief Jason Borland appeared before city council Monday to justify the planned city spending, $212,572 of which was approved in last month’s provisional 2014 city budget.

Borland said the software, called a predictive modelling and dynamic deployment system, can be used in many ways to help fire departments manage their resources in real time as well as plan for the future.

In the past, consultants have been hired on a oneoff basis to advise on single issue projects that the software can now handle.

“But it must be remembered, this software will only make recommendations,” said Borland.

“It’s not creating a world where the computer overrules the fire officer in the field.”

But he said if recommendations vary from the field commander’s directives, that could be used as a learning experience for the department as well.

Unusually balmy winter days are melting temperature records and at least one ice rink in the Okanagan.

“This is the warmest January day that we’ve had here in 20 years,” said Doug Lundquist, meteorologist from Environment Canada.

At the weather station at UBC Okanagan, mercury neared 13 C Monday, which dwarfed the 2006 record temperature of 6.2 C. Sunday, Jan. 12, the high was 8.1 C, which broke the record high of 6.1 C set in 1999.

The previous record for Jan. 11 was set in 2006 with temperatures peaking at 8.5 C, but that was broken Saturday with a 9.1 C high.

Kelowna’s weather records only go

back 20 years, but in Vernon there’s 115 years of data to compare to, and temperature records were broken for two of the last three days.

“There are three things making it warm,” said Lundquist.

“There’s very little snow in Kelowna, there’s warm air coming in from the Pacific, and west of Vancouver Island there’s a huge source of water that’s warm.”

The trifecta of conditions warming up the valley will eventually come to an end, as the fronts are going to go so far north that they’ll die, said Lundquist.

But, there will be lingering effects as the weeks ahead will continue to offer up warmer temperatures.

During the 40 years Jim Catterson was a sales representative in the carpet industry, he never used a day planner.

“I never missed an appointment,” said Catterson, sitting in his West Kelowna home Friday morning.

So when he began leaving things behind and becoming forgetful in the years leading up to retirement, Catterson and his wife, Judy, assumed it was just absentmindedness, brought on by stress.

Even the doctor agreed it was probably nothing serious, at first. He told Catterson it was likely a side-effect of old age.

But, while Catterson was playing baseball one afternoon, it became clearer something was wrong.

He chased down a fly ball, made the catch, and then, rather than throwing the ball back to the infield, he stood still while his teammates and his coach yelled at him.

“I would’ve booted the guy off who did that,” said Catterson, laughing.

Later on, in a different game, he found himself chasing down a ball when his hat flew off.

Instead of completing the play, he turned around and went after his hat.

Understanding his memory lapses were likely caused by something other than old age, Catterson saw a specialist who confirmed the former carpet salesman had vascular dementia.

“In the back of my mind I knew I had something that was serious, but that was not what I was expecting.”

After realizing his condition, Catterson was tempted to quit playing baseball, but his team encouraged him not to.

He took their advice, but it wasn’t easy. Catterson had to reteach himself basic rules of the

game, such as which way to run around the bases.

“It frustrated me, but I didn’t give up. I thought: I’m going to beat this.”

Dementia has made day-to-day tasks difficult as well. Following his doctor’s advice, Catterson gave up his driver’s licence as soon as he was diagnosed.

“I wasn’t happy about it; that was probably the hardest thing I had to do.”

He credited his wife Judy for helping him get through difficult tasks; Judy said she has been appreciative of the caregiver support group

meetings put on by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “They provide lots of information to people who want to learn to deal with what dementia is…and planning for the future,” said Judy.

“We try to keep it as simple as we can.”

Catterson attends an early stage support group twice a month, which he said is also helpful.

Throughout the interview Catterson and his wife spoke optimistically about the disorder; however, near the end, Catterson shed light on the difficult reality of dementia.

“It’s a shitty, shitty disease…it takes everything,” said Catterson.

“You hear stories. There was a guy talking to his grandson, and later (he heard) his grandson saying, ‘Grandpa forgot my name.’

“Those kinds of things, when you hear that, I have to stay away from it. But I know someday it’s going to happen.”

But Catterson’s positive attitude and healthy lifestyle have helped him so far in the process.

He goes for daily walks and tries to skate at Jim Lind Arena at least a few times every week.

His passion for music—mostly rock and roll, as well as rhythm and blues—also helps him get through each day.

“I don’t dwell on what’s going on in my brain. If it gets ugly, life is right now, in the moment.

“I’ve been able to do that so far.”

Catterson is this year’s Investors Group Kelowna Walk for Memories honouree.

The walk is held in 23 communities around the province during January—Alzheimer Awareness Month—to raise funds for people in the community who are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

According to a release put out by the Alzheimer Society of B.C., currently more than 70,000 British Columbians are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. That number is expected to double within the next 25 years.

This year, during Alzheimer Awareness Month, the society is launching a new campaign: Early diagnosis keeps your life from unravelling. The goal is to promote the benefits of early diagnosis.

After working at the Lake City Casino for 10 years as a slot attendant, David Brodie was ready for a change and looked to Okanagan College to make it happen.

“I could have worked my way up at the casino, but with a young family at home, I wanted to find something that had more stability and opportunity for advancement,” said Brodie.

Based on the recommendation of friends, Brodie began researching business programs at Okanagan College and enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

“It was the best education option for me,” he said. “It made the most sense both financially and in terms of the class size. It turns out, I also benefited from the business program’s hands-on practical approach and the professional experience of the instructors.”

That was four years ago. Last Saturday, Brodie joining 296 other students who graduated from Okanagan College.

More than 20 programs were represented at the winter convocation including Business, Practical Nursing, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer Information Systems, and university studies in Arts and Science, to name a few.

Now that Brodie has finished his degree, he is working as a staff accountant at White Kennedy LLP Chartered Accountants, and plans to pursue his Chartered Professional Accounting designation in May. “I was 30 years old when I went back to school full time and I continued to work full time during my studies,” said Brodie.

“It was only possible with the support of Okanagan College, and that of my wife, of course,”he added.

In the 2012-13 academic year, Okanagan College conferred 2,748 credentials.

The court heard Monday that Crown counsel is awaiting a third review of Grossmith’s psychological state.

Paperboy accident case gets confusing

- A Kelowna man arrested earlier this month for alslegedly running down a Capital News delivery person -while evading police has been released on bail.

- Nathan Fahl was released Thursday on $5,000 bail dThursday. The 24-year-old, who has a long list of previsous convictions, was released in the wake of a confession from another driver.

In B.C., it is used by the fire departments in Abbotsford, Nanaimo, Langley, Surrey, North Vancouver City, North Vancouver District and West Vancouver.

And Carlisle said it has met with success in many of those communities.

For instance, he said in the two North Vancouver and West Vancouver fire departments, it has helped identify the closest fire truck to an incident, regardless of which department it belongs to.

That has helped reduce response times and, in his words, basically eradicated municipal borders between the three municipalities when it comes to fire response.

It can also help identify the need, or possible lack of need, for new fire halls based on existing resources and requirements according to historical data.

“There are many different ways this system can be used and problems it can be tasked to assist in solving,” said Carlisle in his written report to council.

“Fire departments use the system to support strategies such as station relocation, traffic signal preemption and increased distribution of existing staff and stations to cover

larger areas.”

Borland told council a local example of how the system could be used would be to figure out if a new fire hall on KLO Road is needed or if existing halls can cover the area adequately.

Council asked for justification for the software when it approved the first year of spending on the program during its provisional budget deliberations in December.

Based on their reaction, councillors appeared to like what they heard Monday.

“It’s important that when technology becomes available, we avail ourselves of it—but obviously not at any price,” said Coun. Gail Given.

The software has three components, two of which will be used starting this year. The third will be added next year.

The cost of buying the software is $165,450 this year for the first two components and another $95,600 for the third component next year.

Carlisle while said no additional staff will be required to use the software, the ongoing operating expenditures of $47,122 in year one, $63,377 in year two and $77,339 in year three, will include training, software licensing, computer hardware, GIS mapping and consulting support.

Men and women embroiled in Kelowna’s sex trade will be offered a way out of harmful patterns through a new program casually dubbed the John and Jane school.

The Prostitution Offender Program basically gives those who have been caught in the cycle of prostitution a chance to attend a workshop in exchange for having criminal charges dropped.

The pilot portion of the program was completed by Kelowna’s street level service workers last November, and initial feedback has led them to believe that positive change on Kelowna’s streets is in the offing.

“It’s interesting to see,” said Shelley Cook, executive director of the local John Howard Society, which runs the John school portion of the program. It already has had 13 graduates from the one day program.

“We see men come into the program with some discomfort, then they really start to en-

gage,” she said. “We open their eyes, big time.”

Cook explained that key to conveying the pitfalls of partaking in the sex trade is highlighting the far reaching impacts.

“They’re not thinking about what they’re doing,” she said, noting that those who take part in harmful behaviours tend to normalize their actions and “pull the wool over their own eyes.”

They don’t necessarily contemplate about how prostitution fuels things like the drug trade which, in turn, makes the community less safe for everyone—particularly their own families.

“If we can start educating people on the impact of their behaviour, then hopefully we can change it,” she said.

Conversely, on the Jane side of the education program, there’s a push to offer resources to women, so they take themselves out of the sex trade.

“We can offer opportunities for women to come to the program, and attend other programs for housing and support,” said Liz Talbott, executive dir-

ector of the NOW Canada Society. Already, Talbott has seen some positive change from the pilot project. “We know that one of the ladies that has come out of it is going to transitional housing with supports in the community,” she said.

“We’re keeping touch with people coming from the program. There are gaps in service in Kelowna, but we have also got some fantastic resources out there. And it’s like anything, when you don’t

know what’s out there, you can’t take advantage of them.”

The program is self-sustaining through a fee-for-service paid by male referrals, a significant portion of which goes back to NOW Canada to assist in providing the program for women.

In addition, 100 per cent of the women from Kelowna and Vernon who registered for the program attended and successfully completed the two and a half day initiative. NOW

is already receiving interest from other communities and hopes to receive referrals from them in the future.

The pilot-offering of these programs was made possible thanks to funding grants through the United Way and is delivered through a partnership between the RCMP, John Howard Society, NOW Canada, Living Positive Resource Centre, E. Fry Society, UBC Okanagan and the Downtown Kelowna Association.

Airport continues to be magnet for traffic growth

Kelowna man assists typhoon relief effort on the ground

New destinations, new airlines and growing passenger numbers have made 2013 a record-breaking year for Kelowna’s airport.

“This has been a tremendous year for the YLW community,” said airport director Sam Samaddar.

“We have a record number of airlines serving our region to a record number of destinations and we had each of the 12 months reach record breaking numbers.”

In 2013, Air North and Pacific Coastal Airlines both added the airport to their route maps, while Abbottsford, Whitehorse, Cranbrook and Ixtapa/ Zihautanejo, Mexico, became new destinations for YLW passengers.

“Two new air carriers, four new destinations and more partnerships with our travel and business stakeholders have helped YLW serve over 1.5 million passengers in 2013,” said Samaddar.

With every month last year breaking all-time highs in terms of passenger numbers at the airport, YLW saw 1,503,288 passengers pass through its terminal in 2013, a 4.11 per cent increase over the 2012 total and 8.14 per cent ahead of 2011.

“August was once again the busiest month of the year with 143,555 passengers using YLW, which was 5.5 per cent ahead of August 2012,” said Samaddar.

month with 136,145 passengers.”

Last year began with the addition of United Airlines service to Los Angeles, inaugurated a few weeks earlier on Dec. 18, 2012. In April, Northwestern Air began service to Abbotsford. In June Air North started what was planned to be seasonal service to Whitehorse. But thanks to stronger than expected passenger loads and success in the market, it announced the service was being changed to year-round.

In November, Pacific Coastal Airlines announced flights between the Kelowna and the Cranbrook in the Kootenays, and Sunwing Airlines offered a new destination to winter sun seekers to Ixtapa/Zihautanejo Mexico.

Harrowing tales of survival have surrounded Kelowna man Chris Hagel since he touched down in Tacloban, Philippines, to complete some relief work.

“Our first day here we spent clearing rubble at an orphanage and then feeding (survivors) a healthy meal. It was an incredible time of hearing their (stories) of surviving the typhoon,” he wrote family and friends last week.

“The miracle of it was that all 70 (orphans) survived the storm on the roof top as they are right on the shore line. They are the only home along this portion of coast that had no casualties.”

To escape the 30 foot waves that were filling the house with water, Hagel was told everyone climbed to the roof, but 11 of the children had been in a bedroom on the ground floor.

When the water started to rise, they were trapped, forcing them to smash through the wall to be able to get out.

Once they had made it to the roof, older children laid on top of the younger children so they would not be blown away.

“Looking at the house I struggle to picture having that many of them up there and what that would have been like for them…

It’s been amazing spending time with them,” he said.

“He’s been with the group Youth With a Mission for a couple of years, and he always wanted to go help people,” she said, “It’s just something that’s been in him. He’s travelled a few places.

He’s been to Romania, and he was in Zambia for three-and-a-half months building an orphanage.”

It’s work that makes Terry very proud and re-

flects well on lessons she tried to instill during Chris’s childhood.

“I do a lot of community work, and I try to help through our parish, and my husband is involved with the Knights of Columbus,” she said.

“My kids have always volunteered…. We are so lucky here, and I think things like this make us more grateful for how lucky we are here compared to out there.”

Typhoon Haiyan is one of the strong-

est storms to make landfall anywhere, reduced almost everything in its path to rubble when it swept ashore in the central Philippines on Nov. 8, 2012, killing at least 6,190 people, leaving 1,785 missing and four million either homeless or with damaged homes.

City briefs: Borrowing for new cop shop The city has taken its first step towards borrowing $42.3 million for a new police services building.

The building, slated for city-owned land on Clement Avenue in the North End, is expected to cost $48 million, with $5.7 million coming from city reserves.

On Monday, council authorized a borrowing bylaw, pending public approval, a step that had to be formalized before getting provincial support to use what is known as the “alternate approval process” to gain that public approval for the borrow-

ing. The process puts the onus on the public to object to a city proposal rather than the city holding a vote on it.

If opponents can’t gather 10 per cent of voters’ signatures over a 30day period, the proposal proceeds. If enough signatures are collected in time, the city can either hold a vote or drop the proposal.

If successful, the city says it will start construction of the new police services building, to replace the aging, existing RCMP detachment building on Doyle Avenue downtown, in 2015.

Construction is ex-

pected to be complete in 2017.

••• The Central Okanagan Foundation will continue to administer the city’s grants for community social development organizations, programs to stop the sexual exploitation of youth and emergencies in 2014.

City council approved a new one-year agreement with the COF Monday, extending a partnership that has been ongoing since 2005.

Nine years ago, the city signed its first agreement with the foundation to have it administer the

grants on behalf of the city and to vet the applications that come in each year.

That agreement had not been updated until now.

The city annually provides $80,000 to non-profit organizations and community groups that offer socially beneficial services and programs in Kelowna. Another $22,000 is provided annually to non-profit groups working to eliminate the sexual exploitation of youth here and a further $5,000 is set aside for emergency grants to help non-profit groups get through tough financial times.

Engineering students test concrete toboggan at Big White Five brave students will fly down the hill in 300-pound concrete sled

For some engineering students at the UBC Okanagan campus, things are going downhill fast.

And that’s just want they want.

A student-led concrete toboggan team is ready to test their beast, a 300-pound sled made from concrete, bamboo and steel.

If things go well, the sled will soar down the mega tube coaster at Big White’s Happy Valley tube park.

If things don’t go well, the team has a lot of work

to do before they head to London, Ont., at the end of January, for the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR).

The Concrete Toboggan Club is a student-based organization with more than 30 UBCO School of Engineering students involved. The goal is to design, construct and race a toboggan with a sliding surface made of concrete.

Car crash sends two women to hospital

A 33-year-old Lake Country woman and a 55-yearold Vernon woman were both sent to hospital late Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash along Highway 97 in Lake Country.

escaped serious injury as her vehicle sustained significant damage to its passenger side.

Both drivers sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision and were transported, as a precaution, by BC Ambulance Service to Kelowna General Hospital.

At this time police are continuing to investigate the crash. Neither speed nor alcohol are considered to be contributing factors, and no charges have yet been laid.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, and has not yet spoken with police, is asked to contact the Lake Country RCMP at 250-766-2288.

A road to nowhere The notion that Fraser Valley taxpayers should help ease the financial woes of TransLink is an absurd non-starter.

This week, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin, said that since Fraser Valley residents possibly use the services provided by TransLink, they should pay for them—preferably through a fuel tax.

That member municipalities within TransLink are looking for more money is nothing new. Residents already contribute $235 annually in prop-

erty taxes, and pay 17 cents on every litre of gas. Nonetheless, TransLink’s $1.45 billion budget is under stress every year. That has TransLink board members like Mayor Daykin looking east.

“I think they’re getting a bit of a free ride,” Daykin said.

To be sure, residents outside MetroVancouver may use TransLink’s transportation infrastructure when they venture west. But the numbers hardly seem to warrant the kind of blanket tax that the Maple

Ridge mayor is suggesting.

Estimates put the number of Chilliwack drivers leaving the city at just 13 per cent. Indeed, according to the Fraser Valley Regional District, 92 per cent of the all vehicle trips originating in the FVRD stay within the FVRD. That’s hardly “a free ride,” especially when taxpayers here already contribute indirectly to TransLink’s transportation infrastructure. The money used to complete SkyTrain extensions, or improve routes like

the $1.4 billion South Fraser Parameter Road did not grow on trees. Portions of it came through provincial and federal funds that we all pay into.

Chilliwack has just undergone the most extensive transit upgrade in the city’s history.

That investment is paying dividends as ridership increases and fewer vehicles clog local roads.

But more is still to be done— work that won’t get done if we begin subsidizing the region’s western neighbour.

So, it’s fitting that the community should be asked to provide input into the apology the province plans to make.

What it should not do, however, is let the province off the hook in any way for what preceding B.C. governments did. Victoria needs to step up and recognize governments of the

past heavily influenced how the public behaved in terms of promoting racism by leading the charge with the laws it made.

Theresa Wat is right when she says we cannot undo the past but we can move forward leaving a legacy of addressing past wrongs and apologizing for them.

By making the move to apologize, the B.C. government is following in the footsteps of the federal government, which apologized for the hated Head Tax it charged Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

But that apology seven years ago did not go far enough for many in the

Chinese community. So all eyes will be on the wording of the apology B.C. offers up.

What’s needed now is to hear clearly from the Chinese community itself about what it expects in terms of an apology.

Throwing it open to the public in 2014 may generate helpful input but it should not be allowed to blunt the apology with the excuse that the sins of the father should not be put on the son.

B.C. needs to step up and address its racist past.

good address (on a map) but trying to find it (in real life) often becomes a challenge without homes or businesses properly marked with good sized numbers.

Out-of-bounds skiing must be stopped To the editor: So it happens every year, right? People going out of bounds on ski hills.

Perhaps one way to stop this is to cancel their ski pass for the season.

Easier maybe than trying to levy some sort of fine. I know what the consequences can be in some

cases, and if they would stop and think, so do they.

I’ve been on searches before, air and ground, and I’ve seen successful endings and tragic ones.

I know what it’s like to pull a toboggan out of the woods with a dead body strapped to it.

To have people ap-

proach in between flights asking what success we’ve had, and the sadness in saying: “Sorry, nothing yet.”

Whatever it takes, something has to be done.

If a driver commits a driving infraction, they have their license taken away. Why not try this

with a ski pass:?

And my heart goes out to the family of the young man who died recently because of a fall. A helmet may have helped, or perhaps not, we’ll never know.

Grey colouring of dog park on Express yourself map a true-to-life depiction To the editor: Sunday, Jan. 12, looked like just another mild winter day, lacking Saturday’s sunshine but still good weather for a walk with the dog.

When I drove up to the Mission Dog Park gravel parking lot, I noticed a new Parks Services sign. I got out of the car to get a closer look.

We welcome letters that comment in a timely manner about stories and editorials published in the Capital News.

All the sports fields are depicted in a lovely green colour. But the dog park which, by the way, could fit multiple times into any one of the sportsfields, is shown in a grey colour— the same as the gravel parking lot.

Then I saw the condition of the dog park, and the few wet and muddy dogs whose guardians had

ventured into the mire.

Yes, grey is indeed a suitable colour to represent the dog park.

I congratulate the person who designed the sign. Truth in advertising!

High interest in divorce preparedness workshops Due to an overwhelming positive response, the divorce preparedness workshop will return for two sessions in early 2014.

The sessions will take place Saturday, Jan. 18, at the downtown branch of the Kelowna Library, 1380 Ellis St., and Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Shatford Centre in Penticton.

This workshop provides participants with clear information for what lies ahead in the process of separation, divorce, and beyond—empowering them to make better decisions with far less stress in moving forward.

Pregnancy labour and delivery can become complicated S

paying your female pet is very common, however, some pet owners are interested in breeding their pet.

Gathering basic information can help you get ready for this process.

Pregnancy in pets lasts in average 63 days.

Labour and delivery of animals is called whelping. It is recommended to prepare a “whelping box” for the mother to deliver in.

The box should be padded with blankets. The box sides should be low enough for easy access for the mother, but prevent wandering off of the newborns.

In general, animals prefer to deliver in private in a dark quiet place.

I recommend to let the mother be familiar with the box a few days before the expected delivery.

There are some signs that can help you predict when your pet is going to start the whelping.

First sign is the animal’s body temperature.

Normal body temperature is between 99-102.5 F, it typically drops by two or three degrees the 12 to 18 hours before the delivery starts.

The pet will also show behavioural changes such as restlessness, licking her vulva, discomfort and heavy panting.

Along with the restlessness the animal will show nesting signs by digging and nose burrowing in the whelping area.

When the active labour starts the animal will pant heavily and you might notice contractions of her underbelly.

The actual delivery of the puppy/kitten resembles a bowl movement motion.

Normally, whelping is a natural process and won’t require intervention, but sometimes problems may occur, so it’s important to know when to intervene.

Here are some points to monitor. If you have a concern with any of the following you should contact your veterinarian as soon as possible: • The mother should have the first newborn within 24 hours from the time the body temperature has dropped below 99 F. • The actual delivery of each newborn, which is characterized by strong contractions, should not last more than 30 to 60 minutes.

Dr. Moshe Oz • In case of trouble in the delivery, a veterinary intervention may be required. This condition is called dystocia, which most commonly happens due to abnormal position of the baby which doesn’t allow a normal delivery and the baby gets stuck, jeopardizing its own and the mother’s life.

Dystocia can also happen due to the mother’s exhaustion and inability to push out the unborn babies.

• There are a few signs that should mean a red flag that the mom might be in trouble and needs an assistance.

The period between each newborn delivery should not exceed fourhours. If a period longer than four hours has lapsed in between the newborn deliveries, it is likely a sign of dystocia.

• Certain breeds are more prone to having problems whelping, especially animals with a wide face and narrow pelvis, such as boxers, pugs and Persian cats. In those cases a cesarean section might be required.

• If the mother is pushing vigorously for over 60 minutes without delivering the baby, is another indication that she may need help.

• In a successful deliver, the puppy/kitten may be delivered while still in the amniotic sac, normally the mother tears the sac and licks the newborn vigorously to trigger breathing.

• The placenta may be delivered along with the newborn or shortly afterwards. Typically the mother eats the placenta and the amniotic sac, and tears the umbilical cord by herself.

• The newborns are born with an instinct that guides them to find the nipples and start nursing shortly after the delivery.

If the newborn wanders off away from the mother, you should place it closer to the mother’s abdomen to encourage nursing.

Occasionally the mother does not show interest in one or more of the newborns, if the new-

born is born in the amniotic sac you should tear the sac immediately and rub the animal vigorously to trigger its breathing reflex.

You can tie the umbilical cord with a thin string such as dental floss. Clean the puppy and place in near the mother’s nipples.

• If your female pet is pregnant, it is highly recommended to take her to be checked by a veterinarian prior to the delivery.

Ultrasound exam or x-ray can help evaluating the number of newborns expected. Also, the

position of the babies is important to help foresee problems in the delivery.

This important data will help you assess if the mother is in trouble while whelping.

• In the first few days after the delivery, you should expect a dark greenish blackish discharge from the mother’s genitals. This is normal process and might take four weeks to cease.

The amount of the discharge should decrease with time. If the amount of the discharge does not decrease and becomes

foul smelling there might be a uterine infection. If that is the case take your pet to see your vet.

• It is essential to feed the mother good quality puppy/kitten food so ensure she will get enough nutrients for her and the newborn’s needs.

A common complication is calcium deficiency, typically characterized by neurological symptoms such as twitching, nervousness and convulsions. This condition is life threatening and requires immediate veterinary attention.

• Another common possible complication is mastitis—inflammation of one or more mammary glands.

With this condition, the affected gland will be enlarged, warm and very painful. The body temperature will typically be elevated. Immediate veterinary attention is required.

While this topic is very wide ranging, my column today is just a brief review on the delivery process and postpartum period care of the mother.

Despite being a nat-

ural process, pregnancy and delivery should not be taken lightly.

If your female pet is pregnant, or if you are considering breeding your pet in the near future, consult your veterinarian, and get information and guidance on your specific pet, to provide her with the best care in this sensitive time in her life.

Springvalley to host tournament Elementary aged students are invited to a Beginners Luck Chess Tournament at Springvalley Middle taking place on Saturday Feb. 1.

Games will begin at 10 a.m., there will be door prizes and the tournament will be wrapped up by 1:30 p.m.

This event is organized for first-time players in mind, a fun first chess tournament open to students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The registration fee is $10. There will be pizza, snacks, and door prizes for everyone.

Tournament directors Chris Laurie, Grant Rice and Luke Campbell will ensure every participant is paired with students of the same grade or of equal chess ability.

There are no chess ratings and results will not be posted. It is $10 to register on site at Springvalley Middle School’s main entrance Saturday, Feb. 1, 9:45 a.m.

“We want kids to feel comfortable taking on a new challenge in a new setting with new friends,” said Laurie.

“They will likely meet the same players in future competitive events, so it’s nice to play in a less structured fun event.”

Please arrive early to register. Parents of primary age students are invited to stay and support their young child as some children can become overwhelmed with their first competition.

Book sale to help homeless, poor children On Saturday, Jan 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at First United Church Hall (corner of Richter and Bernard in downtown Kelowna), there will be a large public book sale to raise funds for the Inn From The Cold homeless shelter and for school children in El Salvador in El Triumpho .

The book sale occurs every three months to assist those most in need. All adult books sell for $1 and children’s books sell for 50 or 25 cents.

It’s a New Year, and I want to whiten my teeth. I don’t know how it works or if it’s harmful. Can you please explain the process for me.

With limited budgets for hiring paid staff, volunteerism is a key resource.

We’re talking here about long term volunteerism and the question I’m posing here is this: Should the performance of volunteers be managed differently than that of regular staff?

In my opinion, the answer is no and yes.

Just as with paid staff, managing volunteers is about keeping them happy, motivated and loyal.

If they’re good it is worth the extra effort to keep them engaged and productive.

Some cynical types might argue that volunteers have a bit of an upper

hand because certain employers need them more than they need the work.

On the other hand, not all volunteers are assets to an organization.

There are some difficult personalities out there and whether they get paid to work or not, their behaviour can be highly disruptive to a workplace.

Stretching exercises key to enhancing flexibility W hen it comes down to the question of fitness, most of think about weight training or cardio for strength and cardiovascular endurance exercise.

Yet stretching for flexibility is often an overlooked and important component in achieving peak physical performance and overall fitness, especially for seniors who see their flexibility start to decline as they age.

Flexibility is defined as the range of motion around a joint. It’s increased during stretching which lengthens the muscle and results in increased range of motion.

There are factors that can limit joint mobility such as elasticity within the muscles tendons or skin surrounding a joint, genetic inheritance, surgical limitations with joint replacement and strength of the opposing muscle group.

Stretching for flexibility is important for many reasons: • decreased risk of injuries • increased blood supply and nutrients Bobbi to joints • better circulation Kittle and helps to remove waste from your joints • better physical performance and efficiency • muscular relaxation and reduced muscular tension, reducing the risk of lower back pain as stretching the hip flexors, hamstrings, and the muscles attached to the pelvis reduces stress to the lumbar spine • enhanced muscular balance and posture by realigning soft tissue structures that may have adapted poorly to the effects of gravity and postural habits.

Stretching is enjoyable and increases a sense of well-being in both mind and body. There are two types of stretches—static (held) and dy-

namic (active) Static stretches are those you hold for so many seconds and do so many times a day. When you think of stretching, it is usually this type of stretching that immediately comes to mind. Static stretches exercise enhances muscle elongation, relaxation and circulation.

Dynamic or active stretching involves movement and muscular effort. It should be slow and controlled and best done as a warm up before exercise as it prepares your muscles for activity and reduces stiffness.

While similar to static stretches because both often incorporate the same body position, the dynamic aspect difference is preceded by some sort of movement.

Although there is controversy over whether you should stretch before or after exercise most experts recommend stretching before and after a workout.

To increase flexibility, focus on all major muscle groups including chronic tight areas holding for 30-60

seconds three to seven times a week.

The longer at the stretches are held the greater flexibility gains.

I often test my client’s flexibility before beginning a fitness program to identify tightness and muscle imbalances.

Below is a flexibility assessment to help you identify areas of limited range of motion.

Hip flexor flexibility—evaluates hip flexor length.

Lay flat on your back and maintain neutral spine while pulling your knee into your chest. Normal length is demonstrate when left leg stays flat on floor. Shortness in the hip flexors is indicated when the left leg raises off the floor and is often associated with low back pain.

Hamstring flexibility—evaluates range of motion in the hips and hamstring tightness.

Limitations in flexibility places undue stress on the lower back, increasing risk for low back pain and injury.

Lying flat on your back lift only

one leg straight up without pain or bending in the knee to 80 degrees.

Demonstrates tightness if unable to lift to 80 degrees Shoulder flexibility—measures the multirotational components of the shoulder joint. Poor shoulder flexibility can affect postural alignment.

Standing with reach test-test each shoulder by taking one arm straight up, let the elbow bend and let the hand come down to rest palm up between the shoulder blades, then reach back with the other hand palm up and attempt to touch hands.

Rating is good if your fingertips can touch, fair if your fingertips are less than two inches apart, and poor if your fingertips are more than two inches apart For a complete list of stretches go to stretching-exercise-guide.com.

He is also the cofounder of Brick Books, a leading Canadian poetry press and was literary editor for the literary journal, The Fiddlehead in the 1990s.

A member of the Order of Canada, McKay

has edited books by such leading Canadian ecopoets as Tim Lilburn, Dennis Lee, Roo Borson, Jan Zwicky and Robert Bringhurst.

The Visiting Author series is sponsored by UBCO Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, UBC Okanagan campus Bookstore, Okanagan Regional Library, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Removing the stress disorder around jawbone joints T

he tempromandibular joints (TMJ) are the jaw joints—the hinges where the lower jawbone meets the skull.

These are the joints that allow us to talk, yawn and chew. Because the muscles that move these joints are small and have to work hard, it’s relatively easy to overwork them.

TMJ disorders can cause pain or tenderness in the jaw, aching pain in and around the ear or in

TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when chewing or opening the mouth.

TMJ disorders can be caused by many different types of problems— including arthritis, jaw injury, or muscle fatigue from clenching or grinding your teeth.

The TMJ combines a hinge action with sliding motions.

The bones of the joint are covered with carti-

lage and are separated by a small shock-absorbing disk, which keeps the movement smooth.

TMJ disorders can be caused when the disk erodes or moves out of its proper alignment, the joint’s cartilage is damaged by arthritis, the joint is damaged by a blow or other impact, or if the muscles that stabilize the joint become fatigued from overwork, which can happen from clenching or grinding the teeth.

In many cases, however, the cause of TMJ disorders isn’t clear.

Western medical treatment of TMJ disorders may include medications such as painkillers, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, or cortisone or Botox injections, a bite guard to protect the joint against teeth grinding or clenching at night, cognitive behavioural therapy to better manage stress and tension, massage therapy to relieve tension

and physiotherapy to promote proper jaw alignment. In severe cases, surgery or corrective dental work may be considered.

Acupuncture can help with TMJ disorder in a number of ways.

When it comes to pain, acupuncture can give quick and positive results, relieving the pain and tenderness of the TMJ disorder.

Acupuncture can also help reduce inflammation to the area, as well as bring blood and energy circulation to the area, helping to promote the body’s healing.

The muscles will begin to relax and automatically correct the opening movement.

The meridians that have connections to the jaw belong to the gallbladder, triple burner, small intestine, stomach and large intestine so an internal imbalance in one of these meridians, whether due to our genetics or our lifestyle, can lead to pain in the jaw along that meridian.

This can help direct

us to the underlying cause of a TMJ disorder, giving us a picture of the internal imbalance that may make the TMJ prone to injury or pain for some people.

A deficiency of blood and qi-energy in one of these meridians can cause severe pain and stiffness because of a lack of proper nourishment to the affected tissues.

The combination of acupuncture with other therapies and removing stress to the area can help to resolve this disorder.

Things that can be done to reduce stress on the TMJ joints include maintaining a relaxed jaw posture, avoiding clenching or grinding teeth, avoiding overusing the jaw muscles such as avoiding sticky or chewy foods and cutting food into small pieces and working to reduce stress and anxiety.

Okanagan Rockets claim Kelowna tourney Warren Henderson STAFF REPORTER

Anything other than a Okanagan Rockets’ victory celebration would have been considered a major surprise at the 2014 edition of the Kelowna International Elite Midget Tournament.

The B.C. Major Midget League’s No. 1 team lived up to all expectations at the annual midget showcase with a 7-3 victory over the Waterloo Wolves in Sunday’s tournament finale at Prospera Place.

It was just the second championship for a Kelowna-based team in the tourney’s 35-year history—the major midget Rockets also won gold in their last appearance in 2010.

Rookie coach and Kelowna product Mack O’Rourke was understandably pleased with his team’s unbeaten effort at the 12-team tourney.

“Going 7-and-0 in a tournament I grew up watching my whole life,

it was good to be part of a win,” said O’Rourke.

“There are several guys in that room who grew up in minor hockey here, so to get the opportunity to win this tournament is a great feeling for them, too.

“We did a little bit of history on the tournament with all the new guys to Kelowna and let them know the importance of his event,” O’Rourke added, “to let them know who’s played in it and who’s won it…everyone was pretty happy to be here once they understood how special this event really is.”

Rockets forward and top prospect Tyson Jost and Liam Finlay led the attack with two goals and an assist each on Sunday.

Jake Kryski, Cory Santoro and Kristian Blumenschein also scored for the champs who sealed the game with two empty-net goals.

The Rockets’ leading scorer during the round-robin portion of the tourney, Kelowna product Tanner Campbell,

couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.

“It means a ton, I’ve grown up watching (the tournament),” said Campbell, who played in the tounament last year with the Kelowna Fripp Rockets. “I had the honour of playing in it last year as well, unfortunately it didn’t turn out the way this year did…so this really means a lot to get it this time.”

As the top team in the BCMML and a semi-finalist at the Calgary Mac’s midget tourney, the Rockets were not surprisingly heavy favourites coming into the tournament.

And other than a close call in the semifinal—a hard-fought 4-3 win over Kelowna’s Pursuit of Excellence—the Rockets dominated their opponents.

Pretty much nothing has fazed the Kelowna Rockets this season in their quest to become the Canadian Hockey League’s top team.

Not even a stretch of 14 of the last 16 games on the road has been enough to curtail Ryan Huska’s club from threatening to leave the rest of the WHL in its wake.

The latest example the Rockets’ resolve came on their four-game Alberta swing. After dropping a 4-2 decision in the opener last Wednesday

to Edmonton, the Rockets responded with wins over Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and the league’s No. 2 team, the Calgary Hitmen.

With an 11-point lead over Calgary in the overall standings and a voluminous 36-5-0-2 record, Kelowna has exceeded even its general manager’s expectations.

“I was confident we’d be a competitive club this year,” said Hamilton.

“But to play like we have and the way we’ve played on the road, I’d have to call it unbelievable. We’re very happy with what we’re seeing.”

The Rockets and are a league-best

21-3 on the road and have lost just twice since Nov. 20.

Their home record of 15-2-0-2 is none too shabby, either. On many nights, the Rockets don’t simply win but often overwhelm and dominate their opponents in the process.

Such was the case on Sunday in a thorough 4-2 win over Calgary.

“We have a great group of kids that’s been together for a while and they’re really playing as a team,” said Hamilton. “The way the coaches have them playing is making it tough on other teams—it’s wide open and our defence is a big part of it, they have

good size, they have skill and they skate well. And with our forwards, everybody is chipping in. We have 23, 24 guys who can all play.”

The Rockets played the last three games of the Alberta tour without their head coach. Ryan Huska returned to Kelowna due to the passing of his father last weekend.

Huska will return this week as the club prepares for a two-game visit to Victoria to take on the Royals.

Forward Marek Tvrdon, recently acquired by the Rockets from the Vancouver Giants, is expected to play for Kelowna this weekend in Victoria.

Forward Marc McCoy, acquired by the Rockets from the Regina Pats after leaving that WHL team, is undecided whether he will resume his junior career.

Three members of the Rockets were listed in NHL’s Central Scouting’s mid-term rankings of draft-eligible players released this week.

Among North American skaters, defenceman Riley Stadel is ranked 55th, forward Justin Kirkland is 74th, while centre Tyson Baillie is listed at No. 90.

Warriors battle Vees Wednesday After sweeping a home-andhome set from the Penticton Vees prior to Christmas, the West Kelowna Warriors will look for their third straight win over the BCHL’s Interior Division leaders on Wednesday night.

The teams face off at 7 p.m. at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The Warriors (23-12-2-2) are nine points back of the Vees in third, but have two games in hand.

West Kelowna’s unbeaten streak stands at six (5-0-1) after a 7-2 victory over the Coquitlam Express Friday at Royal LePage Place.

Kelly Scott’s reign as the B.C. women’s curling champ is over.

The Kelowna rink had its four-year grip on the provincial title broken on Sunday in Prince George in a 5-4 loss to Victoria’s Kesa Van Osch.

With the score tied 4-4 coming home to the 10th end, Scott’s attempted draw to the button came up short, giving Van Osch a steal of one and her first B.C. title.

It was the third time the two rinks had met at the provincials, with Van Osch winning the round robin game and Scott rebounding to win the 1-2 Page play-

The Kelowna Chiefs hit the road over the weekend and returned home with split of two games in KIJHL action.

On Friday night in Fruitvale, the Chiefs downed the Beaver Valley Nite Hawks 3-2.

The family of Keith Frederic Tutt wish to announce his death while in the loving care of Chilliwack’s Cascade Lodge, during the early morning hours on the 26th day of December, 2013, at the age of 87 years.

Keith is survived by family: his loving wife Lois Jean Tutt, nee (Carefoot) in Chilliwack, BC; and his 2nd. son, Allan and his wife Wanda Tutt of Agassiz, BC. Keith was predeceased by his 1st. son, Donald Tutt, on 25th Dec. 2007. Also surviving is his one granddaughter: Tammy and her husband Chris Pilon of Alliston, ON; his two grandsons: Steven and his wife Lisa Tutt of Chilliwack, BC; Chad and his wife Nikki Tutt of Chilliwack, BC; and 6 wonderful great grandchildren: Brandon & Kaley Pilon of Alliston, ON; Mieka & Victoria Tutt of Chilliwack, BC; and Ayden & Ava Tutt of Chilliwack, BC. Keith was born in Kelowna, BC, whose father, Fred Tutt was a Sons of England, Executive; IOOF Executive, and Master Tailor by trade, originally from Battle, England. Fred took over his father’s original business “Tutt’s Tailor Shop”, located in Kelowna, B.C. Years later, failing health resulted in the sale of the family business.

His mother Hilda Tutt, was a longstanding member of the Kelowna United Church choir, who also held high office within the Kelowna Rebekah Lodge.

One of Keith’s favorite pre-teen memories... was having climbed high up into the pilothouse of the S.S. Sicamous, where he stood undaunted upon an old apple box, manning the helm. On the command of Captain Weeks “Full Steam Ahead”, he was extended the rare privilege of steering the S.S. Sicamous Southbound to Penticton.

Keith and his friends learned to swim like fish, by riding the bow-rails of the SS Sicamous whilst traveling astern from the Kelowna docks out to the middle of the lake, where they would jump off and swim back to shore - fun times and years before - the old Aquatic Centre burned to the ground.

At the age of 17, after working for Ex. Master R. Williams aboard the M.S. Pentowna in Kelowna and the S.S. Princess Alice in Victoria, Keith and many of his childhood friends left Kelowna to enlist in the WW2 campaign, stopping for a brief period in St. Margaret’s Cove at Hubbards, NS, for additional seamanship training,

(Nov 9,1954 - January 5, 2014) It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Gordon Ross Allan. Gord was predeceased by his father Robert Allan,(1985) nephew Connor Fennessy (2008) and very recently Auntie Kay & cousin Wendy. Gord leaves to mourn his mother Eileen, brother Gary(Monique ), sisters Debra Penney(Tony), Lori Fennessy(Kevin), his daughter Raechel Murray(Scott), nephews Justin Allan & Chase Fennessy, nieces Casey Fennessy & Kara Bruno(Pat), great nephew Jake & great niece Elizabeth and his wonderful friend Melanie. He also leaves behind friends that he has made all across the country including, his long time good friend Bob Chmilar.

Although Gord had been battling cancer since July 2012, his battle was going well. He was still extremely active at home and was no where near the end of his battle, when an unexpected medical crisis suddenly took him from us.

Cancer brought him a new outlook on life and he still had goals to fulfill before he was ready to quit. He never wanted sympathy and always maintained that he was just fine. He was a gentle giant with a big voice that couldn’t be ignored when he entered a room. He will be missed by many. We would like to thank the many Dr’s, Nurses & support staff at KGH,BCCA,VGH. The staff and volunteers at the Jean C Barber Lodge and the BC Ambulance Services for their help during Gords illness. Cremation with no service, will be followed by a private family celebration in the spring.

The Tutt family is forever thankful that Keith was indeed a brave and honorable member of our Canadian Merchant Navy, having survived a number of Pacific and Atlantic missions aboard the steamer ‘Westend Park’, supplying ammo & equipment to allied forces across hostile waters, far, far from home.

1946-1956 Keith returned to Kelowna where he met and married Lois Jean Carefoot, the very amazing & beautiful daughter of Thornton and Florence Carefoot. During this time Keith, worked for the Dept. of Highways, aboard the Kelowna-Westbank Ferries. To his very last breath, Keith always had a vivid recall of his duties aboard the historic: M.V. Lequime; M.V. Lloyd-Jones; and M.V. Pendozi. In recent years, Keith would enjoy sharing memories with his lifetime friend, John Sugars, a retired President of the Okanagan (Kelowna) Historical Society, now residing in Gibsons, BC. In 1957 - Keith’s commanding voice was noticed aboard ship by CKOV’s Robert (Bob) HALL and the rest is history. Keith was hired by CKOV radio in Kelowna, moving to Chilliwack in 1960, as a result of his promotion within CHWK Radio, as News Director. The family recently discovered a letter dated Feb 3, 1960, wherein Kelowna’s Mayor, R.F. Parkinson, thanked Keith for his professionalism and was sorry to see him go... Notwithstanding, Chilliwack School Board Trustees, Municipal Authorities and Law Enforcement Management, quickly learned of Keith’s (passion, enthusiasm and talents) reporting Fraser Valley news in coordination with provincial, national and world events. The long & short of it was having the trust and respect of your community to report the news in a timely, fare and factual manner, without bias.

On November 11th, 1960 – The Chilliwack Legion Pipe Band was seen ‘On Parade’, in the downtown core of Chilliwack, for the very first time, and wearing a spectacular full dress highland uniform in the Hunting Fraser (Ancient) tartan, under the leadership of their Founding Pipe Major, Keith Tutt, whose father Fred Tutt, a Master Tailor, was flown in from Kelowna, weeks earlier, to custom measure all band members. It was a proud generation of local pipers and drummers within the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 4) Pipe Band, who entertained the community for decades and sadly no longer in formation. Family can now only hope – those lately given this uniform, are aware of it’s history and wear it with pride.

1964 - Keith was hired by J. Fred Weber, owner and founder of CFTK Television/ Radio Network, then the largest privately owned broadcasting network known to exist in the world & located in Terrace, BC. Keith worked tirelessly in the broadcast

news business, working together with many community professionals, the likes of: Ms. Ruth Hallock (Terrace Herald, Staff Writer); Hugh McLarty, (CFTK’s CoNews Anchor); Art Bates, (CFTK’s Classic Weatherman); Al Parfitt (CFTK Sports); Marg Van Herd (CFTK Admin); Norm MacPhail (Dept. of Indian Affairs),. Dr. R.E.M. Lee (Terrace School Board), Gordon Dickie (The Band-Master, Skeena Secondary Highschool) to name just a few... Keith trained a number of young newscasters in CFTK, including the likes of Russ Froese, who perhaps to this day, is unaware of the high praise and references furnished by Keith on his departure. Of course, many people now recall the very talented Russ Froese for his time as BCTV’s News Anchor.

Keith was also actively involved in the formation of the original Terrace Pipe band. Nelson Gillis and Doc Harrison were a couple of the bands original members at a time when the band on parade, was a collaboration of players from the Kitimat, Terrace and Prince Rupert bands. Keith worked hard and played hard. He always stood up for the underdog. He reportedly tossed two offensive drunks out of a Music Festival in Terrace, with the blessing of 2 Nuns in attendance. Keith was a man of action and would not tolerate such disrespect! Ironically, Allan was performing on stage as a piano student of Marylin Davies and being adjudicated by the late Phyllis Schultz, Professor of Music UBC, who in closing awarded Allan with: 1st place honours; and winner of the Piano Forte Championship.

1972 - Keith retired from Broadcast News. Keith and Lois moved back to Chilliwack where they enjoyed the company of old friends and familiar surroundings for many years. Keith was a brilliant man and a proud Canadian, who following his initial retirement, continued to serve his community by completing his training as a Certified Mortician & Embalmer in Chilliwack. Keith also worked as a Pathologist’s Assistant in the Vancouver General Hospital, resulting in his masterful understanding of Human Anatomy.

2011 – Keith in failing health, experienced his first major stroke. The past 2 years were difficult for him, to say the least. The family would like to thank the Cascade Lodge and his new buds Stan & Peter, for their wonderful friendship and support.

Our dear Father and Papa passed away on January 10, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. After 95 years, Fran is now at peace, reunited with his cherished wife Joyce (1919-2012). Fran was admired as a cheerful, loving, wise example to all. Born on the homestead in Valley Centre Sask. in 1918, he later trained at Normal School in Saskatoon.

He taught in many small prairie schools, eventually bringing his young family to Penticton in 1948. He then taught at Pen High and at Argyle SS in North Vancouver, retiring back to Vernon and Kelowna communities in 1982. Highly resourceful, Fran enriched his life with family and friends, music, poetry, gardening, travelling, faith and helping of others.

His children, Karen Self (Brian), Doug Lacina (Nelma) Gwen Doi (Gary), his grandchildren, Rodger, Michael, Darren, Renee, Carolyn, Heather, and their families, will miss him deeply. The family thanks the Good Samaritan staff at Mountainview Village, Kelowna for their great kindness and caring over the past six years. Many thanks also to Fran’s church family for their unending friendship and support.

To remember Fran, a memorial service will be held Thursday, January 16th, at 12:00 noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 696 Glenmore Rd, Kelowna, BC. HUSKA, PETER It is with great sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Peter Huska on January 10, 2014 at the age of 75. He will be missed and forever loved by his wife Pam of 42 years; his daughter Kyla Babcock and husband Chris; his son Ryan Huska and wife Denise; along with six adored grandchildren: Alan, Isobel and Joseph Babcock and Hanna, Olivia and Luke Huska. He will also be remembered by his very close and loving brothers and sisters: Anne Flynn (Murray), Paul Huska (Red), Marla Borsa (Bob), Edna Senko (Henry), Raymond Huska (Lourene), brother in law Robert Gillan (MaryEllen) and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Peter was born in Grandview, Manitoba on February 19, 1938. In 1957, he embarked on a 31 year career with the RCMP, stationed for all of his service in BC. Early in his career, Peter was assigned to police the “Sons of Freedom Doukhobors” out of Nelson, BC, where this newly formed D Squad made provincial history in policing. Peter was then posted to the British Columbia Pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan. It is here that he met his loving wife Pam. Peter and Pam married in 1971 and were stationed in Chilliwack, Nelson, Cranbrook and Trail.

After retiring from the RCMP, Peter worked for the Provincial Government in the Liquor Control Branch.

During his retirement, Peter loved travelling to Arizona each winter, visiting Haystack Rock on the Oregon Coast and exploring other parts of the world. Peter was an avid hockey fan and wouldn’t miss a Rockets’ game. Other hobbies included gardening, walking, puttering around the house and going for coffee with his friends.

Most importantly Peter loved spending time with his family.

Peter will be remembered for his big smile, sense of humour and his love of life. He loved his family and his friends unconditionally. He will be dearly missed, but our memories will stay with us forever.

Our sincere thank you goes out to Dr. Marty Steinruck for his care and friendship to Peter over the years.

MACKNOWED, MONA WILMA (formerly Prokosh, nee: Fletcher)

Mona passed away suddenly January 2, 2014 at Kelowna General Hospital. Predeceased by her husband John, daughter Laura, son Bradley, siblings Bill, Harriet, Connie. She is survived by her sister Betty, children Susan (Tom), Jeff (Dianne), Maureen and partner Mark, JoAnn (Pete), William as well as fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mona was born in Brandon, Manitoba and spent years in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Maple Ridge, BC and her last 20 years in Kelowna, BC. Mona dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren and always lived in close proximity to them. She will be remembered fondly by everyone whose lives she touched with her endless generosity, continuous humor and outrageous sense of fashion. Many thanks to staff and residents at Village of Smith Creek for their love and friendship during Mona’s stay. Special thanks to Dr. Lewke for his exemplary care over the years. A Celebration of Life will be held in July in lieu of a Memorial Service. Please make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association. SARASIN, EMMA JEAN

JANUARY 22, 1922 – JANUARY 9, 2014 We sadly announce the passing of our Mom, who went to her heavenly rest at the age of 91. Mom was born in Sunderland, Ontario and was predeceased by parents Myrtle Murray and William Bryan.

Also her loving husband of 37 years Carl Nordine in 1983 and siblings Clifford Bryan, Margaret Langill, Wilma Cairns, Mary Bratten, and Elva Rabourn. Survived by her loving husband of 24 years Stanley Sarasin, her 3 children Karlla Dion (Paul), Bryan Nordine (Rosanne), and Cheryl Van Oene. Surviving siblings Ella Foley, Gladys Edwards, and William Bryan.

Mom was the middle child of 9, grew up in Crane Valley, Sask. and moved to BC in 1949. She has 12 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 7 great, great grandchildren. Mom was a homemaker and also worked in retail sales and bookkeeping. She was much loved by all who knew her. She was a shining example of Christian living, kindness, and love.

GEOFFREY GARNEYS JOHNSON

October 4 1925 - December 22, 2013 Geoff passed away peacefully at Sutherland Hills Rest Home, Kelowna. Geoff grew up in East Kelowna and he and his father were among the community members who built St. Mary?s Anglican Church in 1936. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy in WWII, as a Navy gunner on merchant ships in convoy across the Atlantic. A life-long resident of East Kelowna, Geoff was an orchardist for many years. He served on the boards of directors for the BC Fruit Growers’ Association, the Laurel Packing House, St. Mary’s Church and the East Kelowna Community Hall. He also operated heavy machinery and worked on construction of the original Vancouver Island Highway, the Hope-Princeton Highway, and many projects around Kelowna.

Geoff and Joan Bennett were married in 1953, and had three children - Jan, Pat, and Rob. The family enjoyed spending time during the summers boating, at the beach lot, and cheering on stock car #88. Joan and Geoff enjoyed the outdoors, spending many happy summers travelling and living in their fifth wheel trailer during their retirement. They both delighted in their four granddaughters, who added another joyous family dimension to their lives. Following Joan’s death in 2008, Geoff continued living at home until 2012 when he moved to Sutherland Hills, close to Rob’s family. He enjoyed watching the quail and other birds that he loved and his days were brightened by daily visits from his good friend and honorary niece, Jennifer Bauer.

Geoff was pre-deceased by his wife Joan and his brother Ted, and is survived by his daughter Jan (Ron Webster), his daughter Pat (Ron Cheffins), his son Rob (Elaine), his four granddaughters, Olivia, Hannah, Emma, and Kate, his sisters Joan Clapp and Valerie Reece, his sister-in-law Judy Johnson, and many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Sutherland Hills, who enjoyed Geoff’s sense of humour, and made his time there comfortable and happy. At Geoff’s request, no funeral or memorial service is being held.

Forty-six West Kelowna residents have told their stories and shared their frustrations with health care services in West Kelowna since an initial call for submissions was put out last month.

But the West Kelowna Residents Association knows there are many more people than that who want to see change.

Last month, the WKRA asked residents to help identify gaps and problems with existing health care services on the Westside.

The residents association has agreed to gather the feedback on behalf of Joanne Konnert, the consultant hired by the District of West Kelowna to prepare a report on the proposed Westside health facility.

“I think Ms. Konnert is probably expecting a larger number,” said WKRA director Ron Green.

“At the last public meeting we had on the subject, we had 245 people there.”

The West Kelowna teenager currently on trial for murder will finally tell her version of the events that left one of her peers dead, and turned a quiet Peachland street into a chaotic crime scene.

The 18-year-old, whose name is under a publication ban, is alleged to have stabbed Ashlee Hyatt, 16, in her neck after an argument at a June 2, 2010, party.

It’s a story that Crown counsel Murray Kaay assembled a number of witnesses to tell from varying angles, but defence lawyer Ingrid Friesen pointed out Friday that none of those viewpoints added up to a complete picture.

“You as a jury will be the first to hear her side of the story—she wants very much to tell it,” Friesen told a B.C. Supreme Court jury Friday. “She’s been waiting two years to tell it.”

The accused, who defence described as a “new girl trying to fit in at a new school,” has seen her point of view be absent in the last two weeks of trial, as even RCMP officers who dealt with the investigation failed to offer her perspective on what happened that night.

What the jury has learned from teen witnesses who were there, however, is that the accused kissed a boy, while her boyfriend was nearby.

This apparently upset Hyatt and the two started exchanging verbal barbs, which escalated to further pushing on the street, and eventually Hyatt was fatally wounded.

Continuing on with the altercation, however, was the teenage host of the party.

The defence has already suggested she was the one who brought the knife to the fight between the accused and Hyatt, and Friday two witnesses took the witness stand to highlight the teenage host’s behaviour in the aftermath and leading up to the fatal altercation.

They also called upon George Young, who lives adjacent to the party house, to give testimony. Young testified he was brought into the fray when he heard a teenage boy in the street talking into his cellphone, saying, “It’s going down, it’s going down, it’s happening now.”

he day’s last light was fading and the first flakes of snow were falling outside the window, when a large black bear came ambling down the slope into the flower bed.

There he began vigorously digging a hole, tossing plants aside as he went.

A loud rap on the window sent him scurrying through the trees to the road, but the damage had been done in the garden.

What if someone had come around the corner of the house and surprised that big animal?

Others tell of watching as a large black bear ambled up their residential street, systematically exploring every driveway for garbage bins left out or other treats to eat, knocking over bins and laying down in the mess of trash in the road, while chewing on whatever was available.
