Coast’s starfish dying in record numbers Peter Rusland Black Press The coast’s starfish are dying horrific deaths while scientists scramble to figure out why. They’re also worried about how seastar wasting syndrome will affect ecosystems spanning Alaska to Vancouver Island to California. “Since late August, we started noticing sunflower seastars dying off quite quickly,” said marine biologist Paula Romagosa, curator of Sidney’s Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. “The coastal diving community got involved doing survey dives. So far we don’t know why,” she said of the starfish die-off involving six or seven species. “I’m quite scared, to be honest. We can’t figure out what it is, so there’s no way to control it — or know if it’ll affect our food sources like fish.” Peter Luckham, a Thetis Island dive master who piloted Chemainus’ divereef jet, said he was

stunned by the seastar decimation. He sends seastar data to the Vancouver Aquarium. “It’s like science fiction. It decomposes into a pile of goo. If you could hear a scream under water, they’d be saying ‘I’m melting’, just like out of the Wizard Of Oz.” Populations including sunflower, sun, basket, leather, pink, common purple, vermillion, and blood stars are dying, Luckham said. “Brittle stars are the only ones I’ve noted not been affected.” “We believe it’s some sort of virus,” said Romagosa, “but we haven’t been able to prove it yet.” Proof of what’s wiping out about 30 per cent of the coast’s observable starfish could come from samples sent to Cornell University, explained Vancouver Aquarium’s Donna Gibbs. Other samples have been shipped to UBC, UVic, and California universities. “It’s pretty shocking. We were surprised seeing seastars in

dives during research around Howe Sound in some state of decay or meltdown.” Divers started noticing melting and dissolving seastars in September in Howe Sound. “It started with sunflower seastars, but has spread to other spices,” said Romagosa. “California purple seastars are being affected more than other species.” Gibbs said she’d never seen starfish deaths on this scale. “Not on this magnitude. Before this, we saw an overabundance of these animals when they were just piled on top of each other on Hutt Island.” Romagosa noted “it could be nature taking its course from overpopulation — or something we humans have done.” Luckham was “quite alarmed” about the seastar’s demise between Nanaimo and Victoria. “It appears to be some kind of pathogen, but I’m not a biologist. It completely wipes out

the entire population.” But the veteran frogman hadn’t seen the disease’s wrath below 70 feet. “That indicates it’s also temperature sensitive, and not surviving in deeper water. “What worries me is stars are a big predator; they eat everything they can find including other stars,” he said of the critter keeping others in balance. He and Romagosa doubted the starfish crisis was sparked by Pacific radiation from the meltdown of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant. “It’s hard to believe it’s radiation affecting the Vancouver area before the closest proximity to Japan. It could be an environmental reaction to overpopulation; it could be sewage, or pollution. Some species disintegrate in a couple of days, others

will last longer.” Dan Jacques, a diver and dock master at Maple Bay Yacht Club, was also shocked seeing seastar carnage in areas around the island, one of the Earth’s biggest seastar populations. “There’s no way

The British Columbia Ferry Commission, the independent regulator of BC Ferry Services Inc. (“BC Ferries”), is seeking public comment on BC Ferries’ proposal to build and operate a cable ferry on Route 21 (Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island – Denman Island). BC Ferries has submitted an application pursuant to Section 55(2) ofthe Coastal Ferry Act seeking the commissioner’s approval of a major capital expenditure for the cable ferry project. Under Section 55 of the Act, the commissioner may approve a major capital expenditure if the proposed expenditure is reasonable, prudent, and consistent with the current Coastal Ferry Services Contract, and any long-term capital plan established by the ferry operator.

you can tell me this is natural. It’s a big wakeup call,” he said. “It’s just crazy.” Crazy enough the legs are dropping off seastars he’s photographed “and they’re just rotting.” Romagosa said the wasting-syndrome

With the number of boats getting out this time Undersized salm on at the Tyee Cl of year the ub. focal point for salmon anglers are the winter springs that hang around the area. To the south of Campbell River the herring have been spotted around Denman Island and fishing for springs has been good. In Campbell River the shoreline along Willow Point has been producing keep able springs in water about 30 feet and trolling small plugs. Newcomers to the area are amazed that we can fish for salmon year around but the main run is in summer. If the salmon is 62cm in length its a keeper, anything under is undersized. We had our first snowfall of the season but the weather is very changeable this time of year and the rivers in weeks to come will receive a lot of attention for those trying for steelhead. Drift fishing with long rods is the preferred method of fishing here but the fly guys Hand tied flies used in will also be out in Campbell River full force throwing out large flies and multicolored. Coming up in next week’s Fishing Corner, I take a look at the past year of fishing, plus I had a chance to meet with Rod Hamilton from Courtenay who is an avid angler and author. He is releasing his new book for those who take vacations and fish for bonefish. I would like to thank all the people who have contacted me here at the Fishing Corner.

Wishing you, your fishing buddies and your families a Merry Christmas and prosperous fishing in the New Year!

Increasing popularity of vitamin bashing With increasing incidence I am receiving comments from my patients that they have stopped taking certain supplements because their MD quoted some research that they did not need them or that they were harmful to them. This article will hopefully shed some light on this subject which is not going

away anytime soon. When I began practicing back in 1985, patients would tell me that their doctors cautioned them against using alternative medicine because they were just wasting their money. Nowadays, many MDs and the media are reporting that alternative medicine may actually be harmful to your health.

Certainly consumers are not always getting what they think they are buying as quality control of the industry varies widely. This is my job as a naturopathic physician, to use professional remedies that I know contain what is on the label and has the potency that is medicinal. My true job is education which is the real meaning of doctor – “docere” to teach, and in this case, to refute the vitamin bashers. The official message emanating from the lofty towers of medical academia is that unscrupulous vitamin salespeople are duping the foolish and ignorant public. In fact, the pharmaceutical industry is running out of ideas and the field of nutritional science is exploding with new discoveries. The situation now exists where selfproclaimed academic experts, many of whom have no formal training in nutrition, make negative assertions about vitamins and dietary supplements. These are then published in well-respected papers such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times or the Globe and Mail and they carry a certain weight of acceptance by the general public. These assertions are most often scientifically unfounded. Many times after these negative statements are made, positive articles are published to refute these assertions, showing the overwhelming research proving these negative statements as false. The question needs to be asked “why does the media not report these positive outcome articles?”

Dr. Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or
