Snow removal high on priority list for new mayor By Treena Mielke When Rick Pankiw was campaigning for mayor last fall he promised snow removal would be high on his list of priorities. Unfortunately, he had no idea how much snow he would be dealing with. Meeting in the Review office for an interview during the last few days of December, Pankiw simply shakes his head when chatting about the amount of snow Rimbey has experienced. “We have done everything in our power to move the snow,” he said. “Now we are running out of places to put it. We have been dumping at the recycle, but that’s getting full.” While Pankiw did not know, offhand,

how much the town has exceeded its budget for snow removal, he said residents can rest assured that it has far been surpassed. “We continue to clear on an ongoing basis. We promised we would do our best regarding snow removal and we believe we’re delivering on that.” Pankiw encourages anyone who has questions or concerns about snow removal to call his cell at 403-783-9878 or stop by the town office. He said public works crews deserve kudos for their efforts to keep the streets cleared. He also noted that the Alberta Department of Transportation has promised to step up their snow removal policy on Hwy. 53

running through town. “They have told us we can schedule times for them to clean when we deem it a necessity,” he said. “We are grateful for that.” As he begins the new year as mayor, Pankiw is looking forward to completing the budgeting process and getting on with council business. He noted council will be working with a new CAO due to the retirement of Tony Goode. He said Goode has promised to stay with the town until the budget is completed, however a new CAO will probably brought on board later this month. One of the first tasks at hand will be to work with the new CAO to develop a plan

designed to attract new businesses to town, he said. He did not rule out tax incentives as a way to bring new business in. “I would be willing to look at anything that ads to the tax base bottom line for the town of Rimbey,” he said. Pankiw believes the incubator program encouraged by the chamber has potential. “I think it is a great idea. The concept is really good.” He said he has found the mayors’ meetings he has attended to be helpful and informative. “It gives me a chance to let everyone know we are open for business here in Rimbey,” he said.

Christmas dinner provides fun and food for all who attended By Treena Mielke About 65 people celebrated Christmas together at the Rimbey Drop In Centre and a good time was had by all. Organizer Gayle Rondeel said the event turned out to be a top notch, fun affair with plenty of food mixed in with lots of fun, laughter and good, old fashioned visiting thrown in. “It was really enjoyable,” she said. “Everyone had a good time. People came for all kinds of reasons and they just had fun. And many of

the volunteers were the same as last year.” Volunteers cooked four 20-pound turkeys, two hams and all the trimmings that make a Christmas dinner special. Preparing the vegetables began Christmas Eve and Rondeel was back at the Drop In at 8:30 a.m. Christmas morning making sure preparations were underway. She said volunteers pitched in to help and things went really well. “It was a really nice atmosphere. Even when we discovered the corn was still in the freezer and it was almost time to eat, we just laughed. It

was no big deal. We made it work.” Using the drop in centre for the Christmas dinner was a good idea, she said. “They have the ovens there and the dishes and pots and pans. It makes it easier for sure.” She said there was more than $800 left over from last year and Buist Motor Products Ltd. do-

nated $250 this year to go towards expenses. A total of $535 was left in the donation box at the door. “We certainly have enough left to do it next year,” she said. Everyone who attended the dinner was encouraged to take packaged leftovers home.

Look back, smile a little remember and move on I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions this year. I blame my lack of resolution making on the snow. It has taken all of my concentration to get me and my Hyundai SUV from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ and back again, all in one piece, Treena Mielke with nerves still intact. On The Other Side And that just gets me out of my subdivision. The road to work still looms many ice and snow covered miles away. That being said, New Year’s resolutions that don’t begin with snow; snow tires, snow shovels, snow removal, snow ploughs, snowflakes, snow angels, snow whatever, seem to have had little meaning for me this year. My attention, however, did waver slightly from snow this week due, at least in part, to the fact I wrote the year in review for the Rimbey Review. How cool is that? It’s difficult to capture a year in 78.8 inches of type, but, really, the written word is amazing, isn’t it! And, as I read the previous editions of the Review, I found myself remembering and all the remembering conjured up all kinds of emotions that really had nothing to do with snow. I remembered the 2013 New Year’s baby and the beautiful smile of the lovely young mom and how the dad looked all proud and happy and kind of shy. And, I remembered sitting in town council and watching councillors for the hundredth time wrestle with the issue of the library. And, once again, I heard the clock tick and watched their faces. Where were they going with this? I wondered. And I knew, as surely as I sat in the desk reserved for reporters such as my self, that beneath their banter and jokes, they were wrestling with the right decision, the best decision possible. And when I saw the front page picture of Canada Day with the young girl clutching the familiar red and white flag, I was reminded of the crowd and the laughter and the underlying pride that seemed to permeate Pas Ka Poo Park.

Proud to be a Canadian? No one said it. No one had to. It was there, in the miniature flags and the giant birthday cake and the quiet dignity of the Legion’s colour party. And then I read about how April was declared MS awareness month in Rimbey and, once again, I was taken back to the quiet courage of the people afflicted with the disease. And, in my mind my pen is flying across my notebook as I struggle to write their stories, to bring to light their struggles and, through the written word, let the world know about the every day heroes each and everyone of them are. And, then there was the election. Once again, I feel the tension, the waiting, the

anxiety. And, I remember as I watched the long lineups at the voting polls feeling something akin to pride as the people of Rimbey exercised their ‘freedom to vote.’ I finish typing in the last highlight and, much to my surprise, I find I have forgotten completely about the snow outside. 2013! It was a good year, I decide! And I realize the opportunity to look back for a brief look at what was brought me smack dab to the reality that change is continual. And same old, same old, really exists only in our minds. As I write this, I make my first resolution. Don’t get in a rut, snow or otherwise, but if you do, get out quickly!

McLauchlin looks ahead with cautious optimism By Treena Mielke The chairman of Rimoka Housing Foundation is looking forward to the new year with cautious optimism. Taking a few minutes to chat before he went out to clear snow on Dec. 31, an activity most Albertans have been engaged in recently, Paul McLauchlin said he is looking forward to working with his new board. “I am quite happy with them all. It seems everyone is pulling together in the same direction and it should be a good year.” McLauchlin doesn’t believe a recent cabinet shuffle which saw Ken Hughes taking over from Doug Griffiths as minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs should make a difference regarding approval for a new senior’s lodge in Rimbey. “A need is a need,” he said. “I don’t see a difference and it’s on the list.” McLauchlin said approval for the lodge was Paul McLauchlin, verbally given in November by the assistant depu- Chairman of Rimoka ty minister of housing, Mike Leathwood. Housing Authority “It’s all verbal at this point,” he said. In the coming months McLauchlin expects a funding formula for the lodge will be realized and Rimoka will decide how much of the debt load they can realistically carry. Presently there are several puzzle pieces missing regarding the lodge proposal, he said, noting the land earmarked for the lodge has not yet been purchased, although the deal is closed to being completed. “There is a few final pieces of the puzzle to be put in place for sure,” he said. McLauchlin doesn’t foresee an increase in Rimoka’s requisitions to the towns of Ponoka and Rimbey and Ponoka County. He said 2013 was a good year financially with energy costs coming in slightly lower than anticpated and the provincial funding slightly higher than estimated. A new manager is to be hired for Parkland Manor in Rimbey and the position is now being advertised. “There has been lots of interest in the new position; very qualified interested persons,” he noted. The board of directors for Rimoka Housing Authority will meet with residents at Parkland Manor on Jan. 6 to discuss issues, concerns and plans for a proposed new lodge.

While police were on scene attending to the driver, several other motorists sped past the emergency vehicles without any attempt to slow down nearly causing another catastrophe. In Alberta, it is the law to slow to 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. Rimbey Lions Club brings cheer Dear Editor, On Christmas morning my wife and I were visiting our mother at the Rimbey Hospital when all of a sudden we heard the singing of Christmas carols in the hallways. We both looked and it was a group of people walking in and out of the rooms down the hallways of the hospital who were singing. In a very short time, they arrived at mum’s room and asked if they could go in and sing. We said “yes.”

Well, you should have seen the expression on our mum’s face when the singers came into her room and sang. The songs of Christmas were being sung by members of the Rimbey Lions Club who had given up Christmas morning to put a little joy into the lives of patients. Thank you, Lions Club. You do a wonderful job. It did bring tears to many people’s eyes and made one lady; our mother and us, very happy. David and Vivian Mulligan

JEFF’S FEATURES OF THE WEEK

Rimbey Alliance Church

Dear Editor On Fri., Dec. 13 I slipped and fell crossing the street in front of the insurance office (in Rimbey). I would like to thank the fellow senior who came to my aid. May karma be upon those who drove around me, and decided maybe someone else would help so they could have a stress free weekend. I do hope you don’t have to think of your family members who may be falling and need help. The only man in Rimbey is the one who came to my rescue. Also, the two female ambulance drivers and the four men, (firemen) whom the ladies called to help them, because it was so slippery. They were afraid they might drop me. To bad the people who stopped to watch were not there to help me when I fell. The fact that I fell does not bother me. I usually find the motion up in the air quite humorous. Although, usually, at that point I do offer my assistance (if I see someone fall). Could I have a copy if anyone stopped to take pictures with their phone? Susan Browne

PLANING FOR THE FUTURE YOU ARE INVITED

A letter to the editor by Andy Gillespie, a resident of long term care at the Rimbey Care Centre, regarding the absence of a voting poll at the long term care facility, has resulted in some answers, though any changes are too late for the last election. In his letter, Gillespie voiced a concern that there was no voting poll at the hospital for the long term care patients to cast a ballot in October’s civic election. “Why do they have an advanced poll at the (Rimbey) Lodge which will give anyone in the Lodge a chance to vote yet the long term facility does not qualify for a polling station”? Gillespie asked in his letter. Gillespie forwarded the letter to Doug Griffiths, the former Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs. In a written reply, Griffiths said the decision as to whether to provide additional opportunities to vote at a municipal election rests with each municipal council.

“The Local Authorities Election Act is the provincial legislation which provides a framework for municipalities to conduct municipal elections. Provincial and federal elections are conducted in accordance with the specific provincial or federal legislation that applies to them, he said in his letter. The LAEA contains provisions for the returning officer, who is appointed by municipal council, to designate one voting station for each voting subdivision in the municipality. The LAEA further prescribes that a municipality may establish other methods of voting by passing a resolution, but is not required to do so. Some of those methods include advance voting stations, institutional voting stations such as hospitals and seniors facilities and special ballots such as mail-in ballots. “The LAEA will likely undergo a thorough examination before the next general municipal election,” Griffiths said, adding that Gillespie’s comments have been noted.
