Arrow Creek fire protection service approved

Residents of the Arrow Creek area might sleep a little more easily in 2014, knowing that they now have fire protection.

The RDCK has adopted a bylaw establishing a fire protection service that takes effect on January 1.

“I am pleased that we were able to establish this service for the property owners in the Arrow Creek area,” said John Kettle, Area B director and chair of the RDCK. “Special thanks to Muriel Buhr for her commitment to this process on behalf of her neighbours. It has been a long time coming and will give the affected property owners some added comfort in knowing a fire or emergency in their area will now receive a response.”

Under the contract, response to fire calls and other emergencies will be provided jointly by Creston Fire Rescue, Wynndel-Lakeview and Canyon-Lister fire departments. They will be compensated equally for providing services.

The Town of Creston’s cost for the realignment of the intersection of Highway 3 (Northwest Boulevard) at Pine Street and Railway Boulevard will be $545,000, about 10 per cent of the total cost.

In a report to town council at Tuesday’s regular meeting, engineering director Colin Farynowski said that costs of the project deemed to be of equal benefit to the town and province will be shared equally.

“Roadway, traffic signal and other components” will cost the town about $215,000, he said.

“In addition, components such as water main replacement, landscaping, irrigation and decorative lighting, for the sole benefit of the town, can also be included in the provincial contract,” he said. “These items total $330,000 are to be paid 100 per cent by the town.”

Construction is scheduled for 2014. A motion to authorize the cost-sharing agreement was passed unanimously by the mayor and three councillors in attendance at town council’s final meeting of the year. Couns. Tanya Wall, Judy Gadicke and Scott Veitch were absent.

Council Briefs •Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks reported to council that “the historic agreement with the European Union is a big win for workers, business and families right here in British Columbia.”

The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is designed to reduce trade barriers between the signatories.

“Throughout the province, hard-working people of B.C. will benefit, especially in key sectors of our local economy,” he said.

In response to a question from Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle, Wilks said that it appears that the agreement paves the way for dairy farmers to export milk without affecting their quotas for sales within Canada.

Volunteers pack about 400 Christmas hampers

For two days each December, the Creston Room at the Creston and District Community Complex is abuzz with activity, as volunteers swarmed to organize and pack Christmas hampers for the Creston Ministerial Association.

This year, about 400 were packed, considerably less than the 485 packed in 2012, of which only about 430 were distributed.

“What this reflects is more accuracy in how we are getting referrals,” said Creston Ministerial Association president Tom Greenhtree. “It does not, I believe, represent a drop in need — only the increasing accuracy of our referral and registration system.”

The community wasn’t any less generous, though, with donations of food, toys, gifts and cash pouring in right up until packing time on Dec. 16. And after those donations were made, more people took the time to work on the project.

“Well over 300 amazing community volunteers served with heart, soul and strength over the course of the two hamper days,” said Greentree. “It’s like the community of Creston stands up and says, ‘We care. You might be struggling to make ends meet.

You might feel like you are barely keeping your head above water. And though we don’t know the details of your situation, we want you to know that you are not alone. We want you to know that Creston cares.’ ” That caring spirit came from all ages, with volunteers ranging

from elementary school students to seniors.

“Having young people involved in the hamper program is so critical,” said Greentree.

“Not only are they an important part of the hamper work force —and believe me, they are — they are seeing generosity in action, they are looking into the eyes of the families for whom this food and these gifts are making a difference, and that experience has an important role in the shaping of these kids into kind, generous, socially-engaged community citizens.”

Some, he added, even earned tears and hugs as they helped load hampers into vehicles when recipients picked them up on Dec. 17.

Although the organizing and packing are mammoth tasks, the atmosphere was nothing less than happy.

“People are serious about their work, but they’re smiling,”

said Terri Goulder, who was volunteering for her second year.

“I’ve been blessed with so much, so giving my time and energy is the least I could do. Most people come in just because they want to help their neighbour.”

That sentiment is at the top of the list for other volunteers, as well.

“You want to be part of it,” said first-time hamper volunteer Muriel Buhr, who spearheads annual shipments of apples, clothes and toys to Shamattawa, Man. “No one is here for themselves. They’re here for everyone else.”

had to scurry between the pews — said she volunteers to earn her monthly cheque.

“I volunteer to give back what I get with my pension cheque,” she said. “What saddens me is we have so many working poor who need help to get through the holiday season. …

“Besides, it takes us oldies to show the young people how to do it.”

And volunteering with the program is a great way to embody the spirit of the season.

“I’ve had help, and now it’s my turn to give back,” said Gloria Preston, volunteering for her first time. “Christmas is about giving. If we had Christmas every day of the year, maybe it would help the world.”

Best singer contest returning

The fifth edition of Creston Best Singer will be running later this winter, and producer Vern Gorham is already drumming up interest in the event, which has become popular for both audiences and performers.

“I’m amazed at how much support the contest has received,” said Gorham. “I think part of that comes from the audience being able to participate.”

As with previous years, the con-

test will begin with an “audition” night on Feb. 20, in which the audience votes on the top 20 to move on to the final, which will run March 13 at the Prince Charles Theatre, where out-of-town judges will name the winner.

Although he previously hosted the contest in several individual communities in previous seasons, Gorham has streamlined the process for the 2013-2014 contest season, which started in Nelson in the fall.

Reason for optimism

As the year draws to a close and we enter an election year there is cause for optimism on a number of fronts in the local political scene.

A couple of items of note are in this edition of the Advance. First, residents of Arrow Creek now have fire protection. It is coordinated by Creston Fire Rescue, in co-operation with the Canyon-Lister and Wynndel-Lakeview fire departments.

This has been a long time coming, and it should have happened sooner. Several years ago, the chiefs of each of those fire departments went to local elected officials with a plan — they would work together to provide fire protection service throughout the Creston Valley. I was in the room when the presentation was made and it was interesting to see the eyebrows of some of those attending raise, mine included. There was a common belief that these groups would never work together, and certainly not by their own choice.

That belief held that the fire departments were silos, with the chiefs, volunteers and communities they serve fiercely protective of their independence.

This a done deal, I thought.

Then the Regional District of Central Kootenay fire chief threw a huge bucket of ice cold water on the plan. Not going to happen, he said, unless the RDCK is operating the fire service. Fast forward a few years and the original plan is finally coming to fruition. Area B director John Kettle hopes that Kitchener residents will agree to a similar contract to the one under which Arrow Creek is now protected, and volunteers in Area C are

scrambling to get enough property owners to sign a petition so that they, too, can finally have certified fire protection in West Creston and on the Creston flats, again on con-

Better access to water and trails needed To the Editor: Ducking a fence and scrambling down a steep hillside to splash in the pristine waters of our fabulous rivers and lakes, kayaking or wandering along the banks observing the abundant wildlife has been a right of passage for those growing up in the Creston Valley. Over the past few years, we have all watched with alarm as the access to our favorite swimming or bird watching spots have been blocked off for whatever reason seemed logical enough to warrant the cost and effort.

While other communities in the Kootenays have taken a proactive approach to maintaining access to their rivers and lakes, working with private landowners, user groups and governments, we have taken a complacent, reactive approach, simply banning access to the water.

As a parent and educator who grew up fully immersed in the Kootenay lifestyle, I find a huge gap in our approach to teaching youth to be conscientious and concerned about water and environmental issues, when these same children will not have the opportunity to wander in our forests and swim freely in our rivers.

A few years ago, I could never have imagined that it would be possible for the Point to be taken from us for any

reason. That place is as deeply ingrained in the roots of this community as are apples and Kokanee beer. This year, as of September, there was no longer any legal access to the Point.

Actually, there is not a single designated place to park, access and walk anywhere along water in our whole beautiful valley! For sure, there are places one can go. I go, but I have to park illegally, trespass across a neighbour’s property and scale a cliff face to get to the beautiful hidden gems that are the heart of our home. Now, I also have to worry about getting my car towed.

I love Creston. I love the people, the mountains, the water, the clean air, the fruit, the climate, the quirky farming mentality and even that our time doesn’t change. Creston is unique, and I strongly believe that we are a community that is equally interested in creating safe access, parking, toilets and garbage collection services for ourselves and visitors so all can enjoy our rivers and forests. Our children can be raised within this environment, learning to love and respect it so caring for it is as natural as breathing.

We have seen that we can lose it. We are losing it. We are the caretakers of this community. We have an incredible opportunity to create a legacy for our children and the future. Please be a part of the conversations and brainstorming around making access to our rivers, walking trails, parking and maintenance a number one priority.

We are hosting a community trails meet and greet event at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 to share ideas, brainstorm and enjoy the company of other trails enthusiasts. The Downtowner Motor Inn has generously donated its conference room for this event, and refreshments will be served.

Style makes telephone ‘directory’ hard to use

To the Editor: (Open letter to Yellow Pages Group Co.) I write to complain about your recently distributed telephone “directory” for Creston and area.

The minor problem that I find with this so-called directory is that the typeface is smaller. Fortunately, that is not a problem for my wife and I (as long as we wear our glasses), but I feel sure many of your subscribers/customers will find the listings extremely difficult or impossible to read.

My main criticism, however, is that is unbelievably hard to find the listing you want in the first place. Although the pages are numbered and each page shows, at the top, the names of the subscribers to be found on it, nowhere to be found are the names of the area in which those subscribers live (Crawford Bay, Sirdar, Cranbrook, Moyie, etc.).

This omission makes the “directory” at best maidenly frustrating to use and at worst a mockery of what a good directory should be. Your claim to be a customer service enterprise is flagrantly contradicted by the shortcomings I have enumerated above.

I trust you are in the process of producing a directory that meets the standard set by its predecessors.

Wisdom must be cultivated

In my recent A Zen’s-Eye View columns, I have presented the first six of eight practices of awakening that Buddha taught on his deathbed: 1) have few desires, 2) know how much is enough, 3) enjoy serenity, 4) make diligent effort, 5) remember to be mindful and 6) practice meditation. I repeat these practices to help with the fifth practice of awakening, “Don’t forget to be mindful.” In order to be mindful of the practices of awakening, we have to memorize them.

The seventh awakening is to cultivate wisdom. It is to listen to the teachings of the eight great awakenings, to contemplate their meaning and how they can apply to daily life. Wisdom is to practice these teachings, and as a result to realize great awakening.

The Buddha said, “Monks, if you have wisdom, you are free from greed.

You will always reflect on yourself and avoid mistakes. You will attain liberation through these eight practices of which I speak. This is called ‘to cultivate wisdom.’ ” In Buddhism, the word for wisdom is prajna, and it is often translated as “wisdom beyond wisdom.” This is to remind us that when we speak of wisdom we are not speaking of the ordinary knowledge that we gather through collecting information, organizing it, analyzing it and evaluating it. These are the skills of a limited human intellect. Prajna is greater than intellectual knowledge or anything we have been taught. It is also greater than the psychological insights we sometimes get.

Wisdom allows us to see the truth of each moment and then flickers with that truth like a flame flickers in a rising breeze. Wisdom cuts away the blinders that prevent us from realizing true enlightenment.

Suggested practice: Spend the next couple of weeks contemplating your core beliefs. When you identify a longstanding belief, ask yourself, “Did this belief reveal itself to me through wisdom beyond wisdom, or did someone or something condition my mind into believing this?”

There are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6.

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time.

Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this.

Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations.

One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling.

In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6.

Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission.

I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now.

Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

Creston donates generously to Shamattawa

The Christmas spirit started in January this year. The residents of Creston Valley kept Shamattawa, Man., in our thoughts. Our neighbour to the northeast in a remote region of Manitoba has been in our thoughts for the last four years.

Yes, it has been four years since that fateful Thanksgiving dinner where friends met Mark Ford, a young RCMP officer who was stationed in Shamattawa. Inspired by his commitment to the community he was working in, residents of Creston learned of a fly-in-only town previously unknown to us, a little town with about 700 children who do not have the things we take for granted, simple things like fresh apples. In a recent report on the community, it was noted that “61 per cent of the housing is in need of major repair, unemployment is rampant and just five per cent of the population has a high school diploma.”

Grateful for our blessings and the knowledge that our valley provides our community and beyond with fresh fruit and vegetables, the residents of our valley have grown together in our endeavor to share our bounty with others less fortunate.

From page 11 Our project to provide fresh fruit and a gift for each child in Shamattawa for Christmas this year had its challenges. We needed to collect for 695 children according to the Shamattawa band’s own count.

But where would we store the lovely gifts coming in daily and, the most troubling, how would we ship them?

Shukin Orchards graciously donated sorting and storage space for our growing collection of gifts — and an amazing 635 kilograms (1,400 pounds) of fresh, beautiful apples.

We held garage sales to raise money for gifts and shipping costs.

We thank all the volunteers, like

Terrie Faulkner and Signe Miller and the Shukin children, who assisted at those sales and all the people who came out to support us by purchasing the treasures.

People volunteered to help sort, pack and box gifts, making new friends along the way, sharing excitement when opening a donated box or bag and seeing a thoughtful gift for another child, and seeing the artistic skill and dedication of people like Jacquie Ringstad, who knitted 27 pairs of beautiful slippers. Gifts came from all over the valley and the East Shore: toys, makeup, Nerf and Lego, teddy bears, dolls, games and more. Gifts were received from businesses such as from Debbie Keirn and the staff at Mark’s, which will make teenagers happy, and from Extra Foods staff like Jo Jo and Joanne who, with

the support of owner Ryan Leeming, generously donated gifts and personal items. And Gleaners supported our project with gift bags, Christmas stockings and more.

One of our greatest joys this year was watching the support from our children.

With the fantastic support of Rachel Vlachos of Kidstastic Children’s Clothing and the schools’ announcement in their newsletters, an outpouring of gifts arrived from Creston’s schoolchildren, complete with Christmas cards for those children far away.

The Beehive Quilters sewed all year and produced 30 gorgeous quilts for the people. Their talents and generosity show no limit. Each year, the RCMP detachment looks forward to those gifts particularly, as they give individual quilts to those most in need.

So many people came on their own with a gift from their heart. Generosity is boundless here in our valley. Ask and ye shall receive is what we have found. A request went out for 14 more Hot Wheels, as we had 72 and needed 86 for our boys aged five to eight. Within a day, three arrived. Within a week, we had 14.

Heart-stirring support came from Anita Storm, Lezlie Hewitt, Tamara Nelson, Bonnie Storm, Carolyn Hawton, Dawn Terrill, Joe Esler, Sylvia and Ed Turner, Eleanor Zander and many more individuals too numerous to count who believe in helping those less fortunate.

With our boxing parties occurring on a regular basis, our group discussions became concerns about shipping. How

Tuesday, December 24, 2013 Creston Valley Advance would we get 3,000 pounds, including apples and 99 boxes of gifts to Thompson, Man., ready to be flown in by Perimeter Aviation? Perimeter Aviation let us know that they would help us fly in the boxes and made a benevolent donation for the community and halved the normal price of shipping. With the generous support of the Columbia Basin Trust, the Shamattawa group, as we are dubbed, knew that we would be able to pay the shipping cost to fly our gifts from Thompson into Shamattawa. But how would we get our four pallets with those 135 boxes to Thompson?

Enter Columbia Brewery, under the leadership of Murray Oswald, with its gracious help in shipping from Creston to Winnipeg. With the knowledge and assistance of brewery logistics manager Grant Penn and administrative assistant Lana Edmonstone, arrangements were made to have Creston Parcel driver Matt pick up pallets from Shukin Orchards and transport them to the Columbia Brewery warehouse, on his own time, as a donation. From there, Columbia Brewery’s transport drivers moved 1,360 kilograms (3,000 pounds) over 1,600 kilometres (994 miles) to their depot in Winnipeg.

Without their donation, our project would not have been successful. Our deepest gratitude goes to Columbia Brewery who gave assistance purely to help our community’s efforts, without regard for their ledger books — the truest meaning of the Christmas spirit.

In Winnipeg, a young man, Troy Smith, volunteered to ferry all those gifts from the

For four years now, Gardewine has helped Creston by transporting our gifts from Winnipeg to the Thompson Municipal Airport, which is no small feat — Thompson is 739 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

That means eight hours of driving in all types of weather for those truckers, to help us help the children. With the supervision of Gardewine’s Jim Sinclair and Jordan Menec, the parcels were picked up and safely on their way to Thompson, free of charge, again in the spirit of giving and generosity. We all know that Santa’s own elves were behind the wheels of those trucks.

Once flown into Shamattawa, the RCMP and the band council worked together and, led by Const. Eric J. Descoteaux, they distributed those 1,400 pounds of apples supplied by Shukin Orchards. That gift of fresh fruit alone makes those children smile. Can you imagine what our gifts at Christmas will do for them? The RCMP once again will play Santa’s helpers in order to help to give gifts to the children.

Our deepest gratitude and thanks to each and every one of you who cared enough to contribute to our Christmas by Creston project. The children of Shamattawa will wake on Christmas morning this year and know that Santa came to their home. They will have a gift this year because of the community, once again, coming together, making spirits bright.

CHRisTMAs 2013 for Christ since the birth of Christianity. Stories have been told of how the Greek word for fish, ixthus, became code for basic Christian confession; each letter of ixthus stood as first letter of each word in the phrase, “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is the Saviour.”

And what did the X in ixthus stand for?

Yep, the X stood for Christ.

Another example is the familiar “Xp” (chi rho), which has been a symbol for Christ for over a thousand years.

The use of Xmas is a natural extension of this established practice, coming into literature over 400 years ago.

Matthew 2:2 tells us of wise men that came to observe and celebrate the birth of the “King of the Jews”. 1 Timothy 6:15 speaks of Jesus Christ as “King of Kings”. The celebration of the birth of Christ is a statement of faith, not just a midwinter festival or a happy holiday.

We celebrate God becoming human, not man becoming God. We celebrate the invasion of Earth by heaven — an invasion of the Prince of Peace and his kingdom rule, the invasion of peace, love, justice and generosity, some of the good things most of us would hope for in our world that is at odds with this eternal king and his wise rule.

As we observe this Christmas season, may it be more than a holiday, may it be a statement of faith, faith in Christ and God’s good intentions for the world he created in which we live.

Rather than seeing Xmas as the removal or substitution of Jesus, I see it as another example of his pervasive presence. Jesus is everywhere, even when his presence is more hidden or subtle. And that’s the Christmas story, isn’t it? Jesus’ birth was hidden from the eyes of the world, made known only to a precious few. In the secrecy of that stable, God, the World-Lover, gave his most precious gift to be the World’s Light. And Jesus, living, dying and rising again in obscurity, became known to the rest of the world only as his hidden story was made known through eyewitnesses. His story continues to be retold today, both boldly and incognito.

I find Xmas encouraging. Rather than a derisive minimization, Xmas expresses a willingness to include Christ in the season even when

space is limited. Like the infamous innkeeper in an overbooked Bethlehem, Xmas reminds us that though Jesus may at times be hidden, he is always present.

“Jesus is the reason for the season,” as the common jingle goes.

And his presence is here, proclaimed in longhand or short, pointing us toward the generosity of the God who sent his Son, Jesus, as his life-changing gift to all.

So, the next time you see a Merry Xmas, remember that X marks the spot for Christ. And maybe say thank you to the business owner who chose to keep Christ in Christmas.

He gazed into the picture, clutched in his weathered hands And saw his lovely bride, with her brand new wedding band.

The picture wasn’t new, it was nearing seventy years old; If only it could talk, what a story t’would be told.

Of a man who was still in love, and devoted to his wife And all that they’d encountered in their coupled, love-shared, life.

He looked back on their lives together, reminisced about the past.

With all that they’d been through, their love for each other did last...

She looked into his smiling eyes, then he gently took her hand.

He whispered, “Merry Christmas,” then he kissed her wedding band.

They amaze me! I’m sure many of you look at your children and others around you and think the same — how amazing they are!

Mary and Joseph embarked on a journey of life together, and depending on which story you prefer, they may have started with a little glitch in terms of the pregnancy. They were poor, they were dependent upon the mercy of others and they lived under an oppressive Roman regime that had suspicions about people of the Israelite royal lineage. They were scared. They were followed by a star — or so it

seemed. There was a sense of miracle about this birth, and there was more than that in this simple birth: the clear comprehension of angelic hosts around them, and a sure understanding of their preciousness for the whole human race. What, for everyone? Well, yes, because it’s a story about a human birth ordained, chosen, blessed and held — like yours, like all. You don’t have to be Christian to appreciate the message of a story about the preciousness of human life — all life.

William Sloane Coffin quipped, “It is often said that the Church is a crutch. Of course it’s a crutch. What makes you think you don’t limp?” There are many places in our hearts where we can open up to new growth, many places in community where we can live more trusting and trustworthy, more radical and free. Risking the vulnerable truth of ourselves in love, is the hope of the world. So risky, too!

But what is the risk of not growing as vibrant, alive, spirit-filled humans? Fear.

Let us all risk a Christmas journey in our own lives. Think about growing in light and love instead of worrying about being seen as perfect, follow the leadings of your heart, leap in faith into the unseen and grow wings. This may be a radical business model but, more importantly, it is a path of transformation and growth.

Nelson Mandela was a fine imperfect model. He spent 27 years in jail and was a visionary world leader for hopeful change and reconciliation through to a new way beyond apartheid, in our time.

The miracle of transformation in this world is real, it’s healing, hopeful and can be yours. This life is a journey of risk in love. You are tender, but be brave as the holy family you are and dare growth.

the Christ Child. It continues to Calvary and the Cross where the crucified Christ shed His blood and gave His life to pay for our sin.

The good news is that God loves sinners. God Himself has determined to bridge the gap between us by giving us His Son, Jesus Christ.

This is the message the Angel joyfully announced to the Shepherds that night so long ago. It’s the message that the multitudes of Angels celebrated together saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men.”

It is the message that the shepherds responded to. They simply accepted by faith what the angel told them. When the shepherds went to visit Bethlehem to see the newborn Messiah, they didn’t worry about who was going to watch their sheep. They didn’t get bogged down in debates about how they were going to find one small baby in the crowded town of Bethlehem. They acted!

Will you do that today? God didn’t send an angel to give you

the news, but in this place, at this time, He did provide you with the opportunity to hear His good news.

God is inviting you today, just like He invited the shepherds. Will you allow Him to bridge the gap that exists between you? Will you believe what He says and do what He asks? Will you acknowledge your need of forgiveness and put your trust in Jesus Christ for salvation? You just need to believe and obey.

Listen to Christ’s promise: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV) Jesus has promised that “whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” (John 6:37, NIV) I pray you will make that decision to trust Christ today, and please let me know. We at Creston Baptist Church would love to help you as you begin your relationship with Christ!

hristmas is not a time for giving. And, no, it is not for buying either. Christmas is a time for receiving!

Many children and even adults consider Christmas to be only for buying and getting presents. But it really is not!

Christmas should teach us that God has given all of heaven to us in the gift. All that it requires of us is to receive that gracious gift. Then we can the have the assurance that we are right with God. That is what Christmas is all about.

We have to realize that we cannot earn anything from God through our own efforts. We must either receive salvation as a gift or do without. The greatest spiritual

In the words of Isaiah 9:6, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

All these attributes are Jesus Christ — he is the Everlasting Father, YHWH,

He is the Wonderful Counsellor, He is heaven’s gift to a planet in rebellion in desperate need of peace. He is the only way that we can have peace with God. There is only one relationship that really matters, and that is your relationship to God. If you maintain that at all costs, letting everything else go, God will fulfill His purpose through your life.

When I commit myself to the revealed truth of the New Testament, I receive from God

the gift of the Holy Spirit, who then begins interpreting to me what Jesus did and what He wants me to do.

Have you received, accepted, and welcomed the gift that God wants you and me to have? The choice is always yours. Receive Christ Jesus now and have everything today, and for eternity.

That is what receiving the gift and Christmas is all about!

his imprisonment and isolation in deep resentment at his oppressors. Over time, he repented of this thinking and

his eventual release and promotion to president, he determined to forgo retribution against his oppressors, though easily and appropriately within his power, but instead pursued a policy of reconciliation.

His actions echo two biblical giants of faith, one from each of the two testaments.

Jacob’s favoured son, Joseph, was sold, enslaved, abandoned, falsely accused and imprisoned, only in the course of a day to be sprung from prison and declared prime minister of all of Egypt. His God-given gifts of prophetic dreaming, dream interpretation and political administration saved from certain destruction both the nation of Egypt, to which he was exiled, as well as his blood brothers who betrayed him, rescuing nascent Israel from a similar fate.

After elevation to ultimate power, although revenge against both Jew and gentile alike was well within his grasp, Joseph recognized the hand of his God in the narrative in which he found himself as the main player. Instead, he became a father figure to Pharaoh and spoke kindly to his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

In the New Testament, the divine man born Jesus would similarly be sold for the price of a slave, abandoned, falsely accused and imprisoned, to eventually be released from death and given a name that is above every name. He taught on a kingdom based on heaven’s system of government, one which, once inaugurated, would never end, whose qualification for entry was quintessentially “belief”. We await His return, the return of the king, to see the day when this Kingdom will operate in its fullness, a day when “he will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” (Isaiah 2:4) He will be

Swim club starting winter session CRESTON WAVE SWIM CLUB

The Creston Wave Swim Club is a part of the BC Summer Swim Association (BCSSA), which promotes and encourages the development of athletes by promoting the development of an individual’s capacity to achieve excellence and life skills through participation in competitive aquatic activities.

The club’s motto is, “Who can stop the power of a Wave?”

Swimming (and the team) has the power to change so much of our lives. The swimmers learn valuable skills in an awesome sport.

They challenge themselves mentally and physically each practice and each race.

They are part of a team, receiving and providing support to a great group of swimmers, family and friends.

A new executive has been elected with Scott Pemberton as president. The winter maintenance program starts Jan. 7. Everyone is welcome to our club, as are questions, feedback, input and enthusiasm.

Golf club pro reflects on first season

BY BRIAN O’KEEFE Now that the Creston Golf Club has closed the doors on the 2013 golf season, I finally have a chance to reflect on the past golf season. The seven-and-ahalf-month golfing season seemed to fly by so quickly.

After accepting the job opportunity to be the new head golf professional for the Creston Golf Club back in late January, which seems like only yesterday, so much has happened in so little time.

That was the way that it seemed with so many activities happening at the course, day in and day out.

Many thanks to my predecessor, Randy Panton, the former professional at the club who retired after 29 years of employment; he had done a terrific job, along with the members of the golf club, to co-ordinate a complete season of competitions and activities for me to continue to build upon.

It certainly was an exciting first year as the new head golf pro at the Creston Golf Club. I’ve met so many nice people that love to play golf, and love the course that they play.

The Creston Golf Club is a gem of a golf course. I had never played it until this year, and as I had opportunity to play, I began to enjoy it more and more. There are many challenges to every round played. Dealing with hitting the right club off the tee, as well as hitting it straight and in play, along with the enjoyment of putting on smooth putting surfaces, helps make a player want to return to play again

and again. There is also the look of the holes from the tees, as well as the breathtaking view from number 7 and 12 tee boxes, certainly giving the golfer the impression of beautiful scenery and a great place to enjoy being outdoors. Quite often, wildlife is seen roaming around the course.

The future looks great for the course, as new projects are in the plans for the years ahead to make the facility better and more enjoyable for its members and pay-as-they-play visitors. It is a big part of the Creston community, and my family and I are excited to be part of it.

It won’t be long before we’re getting excited to start a new golf season. The club has installed a new associate membership program to inject some new players into the club’s atmosphere. Hoping to bring in some members whose playing time may be limited and also of a younger age, the program has created a lot of positive conversation around town. In a nutshell, this membership category has a very reasonable price of only $600 for the season and no initial initiation or membership fee, and has a daily play restriction of after 1:30 p.m. A 10 per cent discount on initiation or membership fee will be applied, per consecutive year of participation in the program to a maximum of five years’ worth, once the associate member graduates to full membership status.

November 23, 1918 ~ December 11, 2013 Isabel was born in Calgary, November 23, 1918 to Fred and Bertha Crawshaw and passed away at InnisIail 5oseÀeld Centre, :ednesday, 'eFember 11, 2013 at the age of 95.

6he was raised in the ChinooN and Innisfail distriFts and after high sFhool attended Normal 6Fhool in Camrose. $t age 18 she was sent oXt to teaFh. 6he taXght for nine years at nXmeroXs rXral sFhools in Alberta. Isabel married Thomas Bilton in 1947 and moved to a farm in the Harmattan area where they raised 3 Fhildren. In 195 she went baFN teaFhing and FontinXed for another 21 years in FoXnty sFhools. They moved to Olds in 1970 then after retirement moved to Creston, BC where she enjoyed growing roses and many other Áowers.

Tom and Isabel tooN several trips inFlXding AXstralia, New Zealand, Alaska, England and Europe. After Tom·s passing in 1980 Isabel Fontinued to enjoy Creston, but later deFided she should be Floser to family. In 2002 she moved to a Fondo in 6unrise 9illage, in Olds. 'ue to ill health in 2011, she moved to 5oseÀeld Centre in Innisfail where she reFeived e[Feptional Fare.

6he is lovingly remembered by three Fhildren, 0arg Hosegood (Garry Stewart), Laura Chrapko (John), Fred Bilton (5ose) Àve granddaughters, Lorraine Henderson (Allan), Carol High (Jeff), Sandra Parker (Steven), Jennifer Barry ('ion), 0aria 0FLean (Brad) si[ great grandFhildren, Tanya Henderson, Travis Henderson, Amanda High, Jake High, Sydney Barry, Cooper Barry two nieFes, .athy :illiamson and Janet Simpson; and a very good friend, Ralph Brown.

From page 2 •Kerri Wall, community health facilitator for Interior Health, spoke to council about opportunities for local governments to partner with IH under the Healthy Communities Initiative, which is designed to ease pressures on the medical system by taking proactive health and fitness measures.

•Council adopted the 2013-2014 corporate strategic plan, which is available for viewing on the Town of Creston website, www.creston.ca.

•Mayor Ron Toyota will attend a Local Government Leadership Academy in Vancouver in February.

•Council supported a request from the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society to use part of a Columbia Basin Trust grant for portable fencing instead of stationary fencing.

•A staff report on the implications of Creston becoming a city was presented. Finance and corporate services director Steffan Klassen estimated that “hard costs” would exceed $25,000 and there would be no clear benefit from making the change. The report was received for information.

•Council received a letter from a local resident requesting that mobility scooter operators be licensed. The writer described a situation in which the inattention of a scooter operator nearly caused a severe accident. Toyota reported that the Union of BC Municipalities has recently discussed the issue and a motion to encourage senior governments to take action was defeated. He said the comments he heard at the convention suggested the issue should be addressed by ICBC. •A rezoning proposal and application for a development variance permit for a Ninth Avenue South property will proceed, with neighboring residents being invited to submit comments and attend a public hearing.

•Council passed a motion confirming that it “is receptive to a realignment of the Town of Creston boundaries.” The motion authorized staff to continue discussions with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to realign the town boundary along 1.9 kilometres of Erickosn Road from the centerline to the northern right of way, and realign the boundary to the north to take in all of Ash Road to the junction of McMurtrie Road, including two cul-de-sacs at the south end of Ash Road.

Weather was excellent during growing season

We had some really great growing weather in 2013. Aside from the few days in June that caused flooding in the East Kootenay and the Calgary/High River areas, the growing season was predictable.

Good weather early on helped with pollination. On our farm here in Erickson, all the crops came in strong, from the bedding plants in the greenhouses to the strawberries outside in the garden and the cherries in the orchard. Even with a number of greenhouses built to grow and protect my crops, I still know that farming is still a big gamble because you can’t control the weather.

After our spring season in Creston has finished up, I start loading the late spring crops into the trailer and head east every Saturday morning, before dawn. Mid-June is the start of the East

Kootenay farmers’ market season. The first market of the year was the quietest start to spring over there in 10 years.

kept everyone close to home. My takehome message was you sure can tell where the holiday people are coming from when they all get stopped at once.

I enjoy the drive out there as it’s usually the first trip off the farm in a couple of months. As I have a loyal following of customers awaiting my arrival, every-

thing went according to plan. These things take time to build up and nothing is for sure.

One trip to the market had a deer jump in front of the truck and trailer.

Another trip saw us driving through a freak hailstorm and another insurance claim had a large can of red paint spilled on the highway, which was fine until a Greyhound bus drove through it and right past me. Unlikely occurrences are hard to write into your business plan but count on them happening just the same.

It is ironic, but when I think of Christmas lights at this time of year I think of wrapping them around the trunks of palm trees to help them through the winter’s cold. People often ask me about the three Chinese windmill palm trees I have growing in the parking lot at the nursery. They are in some fine wood planters made right here in Creston by my friend Mr. Ward.

My palms are moved into an unheated greenhouse for the coldest part of winter. They are hardy to -12 C, so around -5 roll them away. If I wanted to plant them in the ground I’d wrap them with the old-style Christmas lights to keep them warm during the worst part of the cold.

It’s sort of like putting the heat lamp into your chicken coop when it gets good and cold.

At this time of year, I really enjoy looking at the structure of trees and shrubs: how they grow, how some are so similar and others so different. Kind of like the children singing at the Elementary School Christmas concert: all of those little people, all so remarkable and uniquely different. With the holiday season upon us, I would just like to say a big thank you to all our customers from Creston and beyond!

Footlighters holding auditions for Sleepy Hollow FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

With one production left in its 19th season, Footlighters Theatre Society is holding auditions for the spooky Legend of Sleepy Hollow at 2 p.m. Jan 4 at the Snoring Sasquatch.

Ten female roles and eight male roles, which include several teenagers, are available in the production, which will run April 10-12 at Prince Charles Theatre.

“I’ve always liked Sleepy Hollow,” said Jordan Koop, who makes his directorial debut with this production. “It has a nice sense of creepiness.

And it’s a classic — everybody knows the story and kind of relates to it.”

Adapted from the 1820 short story

by Washington Irving, Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set in 1790 in the countryside around a Dutch settlement in New York. It follows schoolmaster Ichabod Crane, who comes to the farming community of Sleepy Hollow looking for a good life and a wealthy wife who will supply it.

Once he sets eyes on the local beauty, Katrina Van Tassel, the only child of a wealthy farmer, he’s sure his dream will come true. Katrina has a boyfriend, Brom Bones, who is extremely jealous.

To complicate matters, a small army of restless spirits, including the most famous phantom of all, the Headless Horseman, haunts the graveyard. When Ichabod tries to make his way home through a terri-

ble storm, he finds that in the dark, there’s something shadowy and towering intent on taking his life…

Koop, who studied theatre in university and has worked on stage and in film, has acted in several Footlighters productions, most recently playing Chad Harvey earlier this month in the locally written Almost Golden. And while he enjoys the spotlight, he decided it was time for a different challenge.

“I’ve been playing around, exploring different avenues,” he said. “I thought it would be exciting to try something new.”
