As Sullivan points out, long-term care facilities offers memory care services, too, but these services are usually delivered in a facility-driven way.

“Here, our resident to care staff ratios are higher. We have a lot more programs in terms of activities and our overall approach to memory care is much more refined.”

At Symphony Senior Living, it’s not about reminding those living with dementia of what the actual date and time is when they ask a question about an incident or person from their past.

“Our philosophy is to live in the moment with them. If it’s 1952, that’s where we are with them. We have lifestyle stations in the memory care neighborhood.

“One of the stations is a bureau with all sorts of scarves, gowns and hats from the 40s, 50s and 60s – all kinds of things depending on where they are, all to help trigger memories from the past.”

There are also various TV programs and films from various eras that folks can enjoy as well. “They can watch the Andy Griffith show, or shows from the 1940s or 50s.

“It’s about taking with our residents and living with them in that moment.”

Sullivan also pointed out that physical activity is emphasized. “We always have snacks and food, and hydration readily available for them as well. The key is a healthy diet.”

Reg Bernier, Director of Wellness, agrees. “People living with Alzheimer’s and dementia are constantly on the move, so they burn so much more energy. You need to replenish that energy with snacks between their meals as a supplement to keep up with their energy levels. We don’t want them losing weight. It’s always been a challenge with those who are living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

“It takes a special person to work in those neighbourhoods. It’s more like a home environment.” Staff wear regular looking clothes as opposed to hospitaltype uniforms. Medications aren’t given in public areas. There are no medication carts out and about. Another key benefit is a continuation of care, right from independent living through to living in the Moments neighbourhood. “We can go from purely independent all the way to palliative – we can care for you for as long as you would like to stay with us.

Drew Adkins proud to be part of Canada’s military Serving in Afghanistan proved a life-changing experience

gt. Drew Adkins has good cause to be proud of his accomplishments.

A military reservist with the 41 Signal Brigade, Adkins was one of the brave Canadians who served in Afghanistan and today continues to support Canada’s military by mentoring younger soldiers in the reserves.

Adkins was in Afghanistan from April 30, 2011 to Dec. 6, 2011 and said he is very proud to have been a part of that operation.

“It was special to be a part of that,” said Adkins. “It was an honour.”

Adkins joined the reserves in 2001 just before he turned 17.

He said he always had an interest in the military. As a young child, he enjoyed playing with G.I. Joe action figures and has always had an interest in war movies.

It was Adkins’ father who suggested he join the reserves. Adkins said at the time he was starting to think about a career path and his father suggested he try the reserves to see if a career in the military was the route he wanted to take.

Adkins said he went to basic training that summer and quickly fell in love with the job.

However, he opted to stay in the reserves rather than pursue a full-time career in the military. Today, he lives in Red Deer and works full-time in Lacombe as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Although Adkins’ specific jobs in the military and as an EMT are quite different from each other, he said they are similar in terms that they are both fast-paced high-stress environments. He said the two roles have some transferable skills that have made him better at his job.

“I find I’m able to stay a lot calmer in the high-stress situations then maybe I would if I wasn’t a soldier,” said Adkins.

Prior to the reserves, Adkins said neither he nor his family had any real experience in the military.

Adkins said he thinks his interest in the armed forces was sparked as a child when he and his family used to visit the Moose Jaw Air Show every summer.

“That was probably the most significant interaction I had with the military prior to getting involved.”

Adkins said that one of the biggest misconceptions people have about the military is that all soldiers are front-line fighters. He added that for every combat soldier in the field, there are a number

of staff providing support.

“That’s a small portion of what happens out there,” said Adkins. He added that while he was in Afghanistan, his job never required him to leave the base at Kandahar airfield.

During his time in Afghanistan, Adkins was responsible for managing digital data and other information regarding Canada’s involvement in the war effort.

It was his job to make sure all of that information was catalogued and safely sent back to Canada where it could be retrieved.

Adkins said he felt relatively safe at the headquarters of the Kandahar Airfield despite being in the middle of a warzone.

He said that life there went on much as it would here in Canada, with people stopping at Tim’s for morning coffee, heading to work for the day and participating in recreational activities like hockey in the evenings – with the exceptions of constantly carrying weapons and periodically dashing to a bunker for protection from a rocket attack.

“It’s almost a surreal experience where you try to fight becoming complacent,” said Adkins. “You couldn’t walk around all day always worried about something so you definitely got comfortable being on base.”

For Adkins, the most difficult part of his time in Afghanistan was dealing with survivor’s guilt.

He said working behind a desk in an office and drinking an iced cappuccino while he knew many of his fellow soldiers were fighting and dying outside the perimeter wall of the headquarters was difficult.

What allowed Adkins to work through that feeling was reminding himself that everyone in Afghanistan was working towards the same goal, and his job was just as important as those of the frontline soldiers.

Of course, the other difficult part of being a soldier is time away from family.

Adkins said he has been with his wife almost as long as he has been a reservist. He said that his work in Afghanistan would not have been possible without her support.

Adkins added that he also received tremendous support from the friends he has gained through the military. He said the network of friends he has built within Red Deer, Alberta and across Canada is one of the reasons that he continues with his military involvement.

Blackfalds welcomes one CAO and bids farewell to another

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Blackfalds has a new CAO in Town Hall.

Today, Myron Thompson begins his new position as Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Blackfalds.

Thompson has 24 years of experience in municipal administration.

Previous to becoming CAO for the Town of Blackfalds, Thompson held that same role with the Municipality of Crows Nest Pass.

Before that, he was assistant CAO for Sylvan Lake.

Happy to be back in Central Alberta, Thompson, who still owns a home in Sylvan Lake, is looking to relocate to Blackfalds. He said he wants to be as much a part of the fabric of the community as possible.

What drew Thompson to work in the municipal sector were the variety of challenges, he said.

“There’s always new challenges, no two days are the same,” said Thompson.

“I like challenge and I like accomplishing positive things for a community.”

Thompson said he enjoys serving the public and providing

service to a community. He said being part of a team is another thing he has enjoyed in previous positions and while he has limited experience with the Town of Blackfalds at this point, he is already impressed by what he has seen.

“What I like about Blackfalds is it’s a very positive work environment,” said Thompson, adding that Blackfalds is a very vibrant and progressive community.

He is looking forward to meeting the daily challenges that will come with the position of CAO as well as working with council.

He said that the downtown redevelopment initiative and the sustainability plan in particular are projects he is eager to get involved with.

“A lot of the things that are on the radar for the community are experiences that I’ve had,” said Thompson.

“I’m hoping that I can bring my skills and experience to help the community in meeting some of these challenges.”

For the first few days in his new position, Thompson will be spending time with Corinne Newman, the outgoing CAO for the Town of Blackfalds as part of the transition process.

Newman has been CAO for the Town of Blackfalds for the last seven years. She said she that while she will miss her position with the Town of Blackfalds, she is looking forward to retirement and is confident she has left her position in capable hands.

“It will be a very exciting role for him,” said Newman. “He has great experience.”

Newman added that Thompson is already familiar with Central Alberta and the support of staff and council should help him settle into the new role.

“It’s really good when you have the supportive staff and progressive councils that we have in Blackfalds.”

Newman said she immensely enjoyed her time with the Town of Blackfalds, saying she enjoyed the people and three different councils she worked with in her position as CAO. “The progressive nature of this community I will miss,” said Newman.

For the immediate future, Newman plans to take an extended vacation, she said. She leaves for Arizona this week and won’t return to Central Alberta until May. While Newman will be living in

Red Deer in the future, she said she will always consider Blackfalds home and will be looking for a way to stay involved with the

community when she returns.

Amendments to snow clearing policy explained The City will be providing enhanced snow-clearing services in 2014.

The City has received feedback from residents regarding snow clearing in recent years and in light of this winter’s heavy snow-

falls, Council has decided to move ahead with amendments to the Snow Removal Policy, which was first created in December of 1999.

This policy was updated once in 2005, and was not reviewed until February

2013, at which time a decision was made to review service levels during the upcoming winter.

Discussions focused on clearing private walkways that join to public roadways, as the then-current

policy required that only driveways be cleared.

Surrounding municipalities’ snow clearing policies were reviewed last March to identify possible options for clearing private walkways. After further

research and analysis, Council has amended the current practice to provide a higher level of service to Lacombe residents by clearing walkways or driveways. The City will begin clearing snow windrows

from residential driveways or private walkways where there is no boulevard. If there is both a driveway and a private walkway (with no boulevard) present by the residence, crews will only clear the driveway. This is typical of other municipalities in the Central Alberta region, such as Blackfalds.

If there is a boulevard present, then crews will not clear the private walkway as it typically ties into public sidewalks paralleling the residence. In the rare instance that an area has a boulevard, walkway, and no front driveways, periodic access ways will be cleared roughly every three houses, similar to the City of Red Deer’s current practice.

The City has identified 350 - 400 private walkways to be potentially cleared in residential areas around Lacombe. To carry out the enhanced service the municipality will be converting one equipment operator from a summer/fall seasonal position to a fulltime position.

As well, existing snow clearing equipment will be upgraded to help facilitate the enhanced service.

Lacombe Daycare Society welcomes new executive director

BY PAIGE PARSONS Lacombe Express The new executive director of the Lacombe Daycare Society is also new to the City of Lacombe—and she’s excited to be here. Erica Eshaghian moved to Lacombe and started her position with the association at the beginning of December.

“I look forward to immersing myself in the community and getting to know as much as I can about Lacombe and the people of Lacombe,” Eshaghian said, speaking about her new role.

Eshaghian came to Lacombe after leaving a director position at a French early childhood education centre in Prince Edward Island. Before that she worked at centres in Ontario. Eshaghian has a diploma in early childhood education from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario.

“My passion was always

to work in early childhood education,” she said. “I wanted to be in a smaller community that was accessible to larger communities and to be around my family.”

Eshaghian has been moving around Canada her whole life. She was born in Saskatchewan, moved to Manitoba, then to Ontario, and then to Prince Edward Island for work before arriving in Lacombe.

Eshaghian has several goals she hopes to achieve in her position, both within the society and through partnerships in the community. The most longterm and ambitious goal is the creation of a new facility for the daycare as part of the Cranna Community Cultural Centre Initiative, known colloquially as the ‘C4 Initiative’. Eshaghian hasn’t had an opportunity to become involved in the planning yet, but she looks forward to being a part of

the project as it moves forward. In the interim, she has many projects planned for the association to help expand its role in the community.

“In the meantime we’d like to do some facility enhancements, some community outreach, partnerships with the community and with families and promotion of the centre,” she said. “And we’re always working towards best practices, developmentally appropriate practices, curriculum and pedagogy.”

In advance of a new facility being available as part of C4, Eshaghian said the association hopes to update their current facility with new flooring, painting, new equipment, new materials, improvements to the outdoor play area and increased storage.

Eshaghian said that while her earlier professional experiences are applicable to her new po-

sition, differences in the operation of early childhood education across Canada means there will be a learning curve as she adjusts to her new job.

“Early childhood education and being a director in centres all throughout Canada are different because we don’t have a universal early childhood education system, so that means that in Prince Edward Island and in Ontario and in Alberta, our policies and procedures are different,” Eshaghian said. “You get the experience from being a director in PEI that you can apply here through leadership and inspiring staff and working with children, but in terms of administration, it is different.”

She plans to tackle the differences by becoming as involved as possible in the local culture and community.

“One of the things I would really like to do

while I am in Lacombe is get to know the community and immerse myself in the community of Lacombe, whether that be through partnerships with other organizations or just through meeting people,” she said.

Through this immersion she hopes to work with stakeholders in the City to create stronger connections between the daycare centre and the community.

“How we can grow, how we can increase enrolment, how we can work together, organize community events together and just link the community and the different organizations together?” Eshaghian asked. “Because we all have a really common purpose and there is a chain effect between all these organizations and if we work together then our community will work and build a stronger community for children and families.”

Even though she’s only

“I’ve been around to meet some people at City Hall and other organizations like FCSS [Lacombe and District Family and Community Support Services] and I find that there’s a very team-orientated community, that they work together to do what’s best for Lacombe as a whole.”

As snow falls in Central Alberta, winter tire use rises

BY PAIGE PARSONS Lacombe Express Winter tires are not mandatory in Alberta, but according to one local business, more Central Albertans are turning to winter tires of their own accord.

Russel Downing, assistant manager at Fountain Tire Lacombe, said their store has seen increasing demand for winter tires over the last five years.

“To put a number on it, I’d say 60 to 70 per cent of our customers are using winter tires now,” Downing said.

Downing’s estimate is in contrast to the findings of a 2011 Canadian Tire survey that found only 28% of Alberta drivers used winter tires.

Downing said this year has been especially busy for sales of winter tires because of the early, intense winter driving conditions.

“When we get this much snow this early in the year, we have a lot of people coming in and they say they’ve never had winter tires in the past, but they’re going to give them a try this year because its been such a rough-weather year.”

This year’s heavy snowfall and icy, cold conditions may have prompted many Central Alber-

tans to decide winter tires are worth it, but unlike in British Columbia or Quebec, the Alberta government has not made seasonal use of winter tires mandatory.

Each winter in British Columbia, the provincial government determines which highways winter tires will be mandatory for.

In Quebec, any registered taxi or passenger vehicle must be equipped with winter tires between Dec. 15 and March 15. According to Transports Québec’s web site, the province is in the process of updating their regulations: as of Dec. 15, 2014, for a tire to qualify as a winter tire it must either be equipped with studs or bear the pictogram signifying the mountain/snowflake rating.

Downing explained that the mountain/snowflake rating means the tire met the required performance testing in winter driving conditions.

“In order to get that mountain/ snowflake rating that tire has to be 10 per cent better on winter and icy conditions than the standard all-season they have measured it by,” said Downing.

The success of the legislation in Quebec may have prompted the expanded regulations that will require winter tires to be approved under the mountain/

snowflake ratings.

The 2012 study Winter Tires: A Review of Research on Effectiveness and Use, published by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, notes that since mandatory winter tire legislation has only been in effect in Quebec since 2008, there isn’t a significant amount of data available yet.

However, the average number of people killed in collisions during the winter in Quebec dropped from 822 to 523—a 30% decrease in deaths once winter tires became mandatory.

The same study also recommended having four of the same winter tires, instead of two that are mixed with two regular or allseason tires. Having a mixed set can compromise vehicle stability and cause it to spin out of control.

RCMP Blackfalds Detachment Commander Ken Morrison spent part of his career working as a collision reconstructionist. Citing his experience with the advantages of having police vehicles equipped with winter tires in bad driving conditions, he said making winter tires mandatory in Alberta might not be a bad idea.

“I think it should be considered. I can see the advantage of to what we do by having four winter tires on the police cars and the

traction we have and what we’re expected to do with them during snowstorms,” Morrison said.

Even though it is not mandatory, Morrison encourages Central Albertans to choose a set of winter tires, echoing the sentiment that all four tires should be the same. “I strongly recommend that every fall, if possible, and again it comes to money, if you can afford it, four winter tires are the best way to go on a vehicle,” Morrison said.

Lacombe Fire Chief Ed van Delden also endorses the use of winter tires for Alberta drivers,

though he notes that in some cases they might not be necessary.

“I would strongly encourage people to do that. But I also know that there are some people who drive very little or they don’t need to drive in stormy weather, or in adverse conditions. So would allseason tires get them through? I suspect that’s the case.” van Delden said the important message for all drivers, whether or not they have winter tires, is to realize driving in the winter just isn’t the same as summer driving.

“Give yourself some time, slow down and enjoy the ride.”

OPINION Working together for growth At its regular meeting last month, Lacombe City council heard from over 100 unhappy Lacombe residents as part of the City’s public hearing process of a land re-zoning in relation to the new Trinity Crossing development.

During the same week at its own regular meeting, Blackfalds Town council heard from just one resident at its public hearing before giving second reading to the proposed Aurora Heights development, and that resident’s only concern was that the wetlands in the area remain maintained, something already accounted for in the plan.

Before the election, Lacombe City council was criticized for its inability to encourage growth in Lacombe and many of the councillors elected stated that encouraging growth was a primary objective for them. Lacombe’s recent housing analysis also concluded that Lacombe is in dire need of residential growth, particularly low-income high-density housing, in order to grow any further.

But when council tries to do just that, build a high-density development to encourage further growth, it is met by strong resistance from the general public.

Blackfalds, on the other hand, has experienced explosive growth in the past few years and when its Town Council holds a public hearing regarding a new development, they face no opposition whatsoever. Granted, there is no way of knowing if the silent majority in Blackfalds was in support of the development or if they simply didn’t know or care enough about it to attend the public hearing, but it is said quite often that happy citizens are less likely to take an active role in politics than those who are unhappy.

Is it possible then that Lacombe’s councillors aren’t the only ones to blame for the City’s lack of growth? Perhaps part of the problem is also the attitude of Lacombe’s residents?

That’s not to say the concerns raised by those who spoke at the recent public hearing in Lacombe were not valid. Indeed they were and we can only hope that they make council take a step back and think while working on future developments.

Terrace Heights Dr. resident Marco de Andreade was right when he said that the City should be trying to exceed requirements instead of meeting them, “To make

the area a place people will want to live, not have to live because it’s cheap.” But Mayor Steve Christie was also right when he said that council was between a rock and a hard place making the decision and that neither outcome would be ideal.

The point is, there needs to be some compromise on both ends. City council can’t just push through legislation because all the boxes are checked and Lacombe’s residents can’t oppose new developments just because they don’t want them in their backyard.

According to Wikipedia, the “wintry imagery” of the song has led to it being adopted as a holiday tune, but I have never seen raindrops on roses or stinging bees in the winter. Anyway, I digress.

As I was saying, despite my frustrations and confusion, My Favourite Things is heard a lot during the Christmas season. Therefore, that song, combined with the heavy doses of friends and family visits I had over the season, made me start thinking about a few favourite things of mine.

As I went through the list of things that make me happiest when I’m feeling a bit down, as the list in My Favourite Things cheers up the singer, I came to realize it is the simplest things that I enjoy the most. At the top of my list for ex-

Going to bed after a long, productive day is always best with clean sheets. During the recent cold snap, I tried to wash and dry my sheets just before bed as an added bonus. That way, I not only got to sleep with clean sheets, I got to go to bed with sheets still warm from the dryer as well.

On that note, if you want to stay warm during winter’s coldest days, try throwing your clothes in the dryer for 20 minutes before getting dressed for the day. I think I speak for the general populous when I say that putting on clean underwear still warm from the dryer is one of the best feelings in existence.

While we are on the subject of

keeping warm, I can add hot things to my list of favourites, yet simple, pleasures. Starting the day with a hot (and I mean come out still steaming hot, none of this warm nonsense) shower is the best way to start the day and a great way to dispel, at least temporarily, any stress or slight feelings of sickness left over from the night before (which are most likely very minor anyway if you went to bed with clean, warm sheets and are putting on clothes fresh from the dryer after your shower.)

If you need more than that to start your day, a hot beverage, tea, coffee, even hot chocolate should be more than enough to set you right. Similarly a hot beverage and a hot bath are a great way to destress from the day and prepare for the wonderful journey to bed.

Movies are great simple favourites. Everyone has their favourites that they have seen 1,000 times but still pop in whenever they need a pick me up. They don’t have to be

good, they just have to be familiar or sentimental to you and that’s what makes them special. Familiarity is comforting and there is nothing better than curling up on your couch to watch a favourite flick on the tube.

Finally, to go full circle, there is music. Cranking up the tunes from your favourite band, singer or composer so loud you can hardly think is a great way to indulge for a few quick minutes when necessary. If you live with roommates or family in your home who don’t share your tastes, sound-canceling headphones are a great investment.

Now, if you will excuse me, it’s been a long and productive day so I think I have earned some time in front of the TV watching one of my favourite shows (Corner Gas) while enjoying my favourite snack (cheese and crackers) with some hot tea. Then it’s time for a hot bath before going to bed with clean, warm sheets. Good night. news@lacombeexpress.com

A look at the ebb and flow of Gull Lake Alberta’s early summer floods of 2013 provided a sharp and catastrophic reminder of the vagaries and power of nature.

FREDEEN Thanks to its location, Lacombe escaped the wrath of the raging rivers but the community is not immune to nature’s cycles of feast and famine.

In 1905 an English syndicate proposed the scheme of harnessing the Blindman River to provide hydroelectric power to the town of Lacombe. A debris dam was constructed on the Blindman just above its confluence with the Red Deer River and within a year the lake behind the dam was one-half mile in length, power was flowing over an eight-mile transmission line and six arc lamps were providing lighting for Lacombe.

Seasonal fluctuations in river flow were initially compensated by controlling the water flow from Gull Lake into the Blindman River via Outlet Creek.

Early in 1908 this flow proved insufficient so a canal was dredged, the creek deepened and a control gate was installed to regulate the flow from the lake into the river.

As lake levels continued to recede this source became unreliable and the town installed an auxiliary steam power plant in Danner’s Pacemaker flour mill.

Cliff Danner was the steam engineer. This steam plant took over when the dam was washed away by the spring flood of 1915 and continued in operation until Calgary Power was granted the power franchise in 1929.

Had the promoters of this proj-

ect been able to review the weather history of this area they would have realized that climate would be the ultimate controller.

It was Albert McCollum, who lived one mile west of Juniper Lodge who made this point clear to Don Walker and me when we visited him in 1965 to view his collection of Indian artifacts.

He recounted stories told by his grandfather who had worked as a bull train driver for the Hudson’s Bay Company on the EdmontonRocky Mountain House trail.

This trail passed between Gull Lake and the present site of Lacombe. In winter he crossed the lake on the ice to reduce the distance between the two trading posts. Water of the lake receded slowly but steadily and by mid1850 summer crossing became possible over a narrow gravel ridge that led southwest from a point near McLaurin Beach.

By 1860 this ridge was exposed for most of its length.

Then the ‘wet’ returned, the lake refilled and the land ‘bridge’ was submerged. This brief respite was followed by a drying out period that steadily shrank the lake for the rest of the century.

Spring 1900 found the lake once again full to overflowing with gale force winds at spring breakup depositing ice floes on the veranda of Lakeshore Hotel which stood high above the water on the south shore of the lake.

Eight years later the water level had again retreated, exposing a sandy beach that encouraged development of the lake as a summer resort. By 1914 there were 122 cottages in the summer village, more than 200 boats anchored regularly along the shore and a huge crowd assembled to enjoy the inaugural yacht race.

In 1922 the annual regatta here attracted 2,000 visitors.

The province responded to popular demand in 1928 by building a pier to facilitate spectator sports,

swimming competitions and boat launching. Of particular interest was the annual one-mile Wrigley swim competition.

A decade later this pier stood on dry ground.

Such variability should not have been unexpected. Explorer Henry Kelsey (1690), the first white person to traverse this region, described it as a desert in his 1690 journal.

One hundred and sixty-seven years would pass before the British and Canadian governments commissioned their expeditions (Captain John Palliser and Professor Harry Youle Hind) to study the agricultural potential of the prairies. Both assessments of the area agreed with Kelsey. In fact, Palliser defined a triangular area, with its apex at about Consort and its base extending along the U.S. border from the foothills to

in 1977, 1992 and the list goes on (Government of Canada Prairie Land and Water Resources).

That such variation has been accepted by those who till the soil is evinced by the evolution of farming practices. However, the same cannot be said of those who own lake-side property at any of the lakes within county borders.

They demand their water front be stabilized to protect their investment. To satisfy that demand in the past the county has periodically obliged by pumping water from the Blindman River into Gull Lake. Quite a contrast to the days when the lake flowed into the river through Outlet Creek! remedial measures What would be appropriate or available should water levels surge, as indeed they shall if history is any guide, is a bridge yet to be crossed.

However, both Hind and Palliser did envision a dam on the South Saskatchewan River to create a lake with irrigation potential for the ‘prairie desert.’ That vision came to fruition in 1967 with completion of the Gardiner Dam. In the early days of settlement, the newly-broken land and timely rains provided promising harvests, including the bumper crop of 1915.

However, by 1917, the rains had become few and far between. Students of climatology have determined that no less than 20 notable droughts occurred on the prairies during the 20th century alone, including well-known dry periods like 1917 to 1926, 1929 to 1937, the 1960s, a 10-year period beginning

SPORTS Lacombe’s Michael Roe a world-class competitor

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Through hard work and dedication, dreams can come true.

That is the adage of Sensei Michael Roe of Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing, who at the young age of 18 has competed against some karate’s best athletes in the world.

“If there is something you dream about or you want to achieve, go after it,” said Roe. “Because 20, 30 years down the road, you’re going to regret it if you didn’t.”

Born in Red Deer, Roe started studying zen karate under Sensei Lyle Cheney at the age of six and earned his junior black belt at the young age of 13. Now Roe trains and instructs at Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing. He added he recently tested for and received his full black belt As a child, Roe remembers being given the option between doing karate and hockey. He said his dad particularly encouraged him to go the martial arts route.

“According to my dad’s memory, when I was younger I used to run around the house kicking,” said Roe. So, Roe went to watch a karate class. He said it immediately grabbed his interest and he started training for the sport himself.

It wasn’t long before Roe started competing in karate as well. He said he went to his first competition at the age of seven after earning his first yellow belt (there are two yellow belts in zen karate’s nine-belt system).

There are three events Roe regularly competes in - kata, point sparring and continuous sparring.

In kata competitions, karate practitioners perform certain moves in a set order.

The order and number of techniques varies depending on which kata is being performed.

Judges then decide who performed the kata most accurately based on certain criteria and award scores to the competitors.

In sparring, practitioners face off one-onone and attempt to score point by striking target areas of the body with little to heavy contact allowed, depending on the division.

With point sparring, the match stops whenever a point is awarded but in continuous sparring competitors can rack up multiple points without a break in the action. Roe said that there tends to be more contact in continuous sparring than point sparring.

Roe said he has always particularly enjoyed the sparring events.

“I love the fighting,” said Roe. He added

that those events have always intrigued him more it is lest subjective and the competitors are more in control of how they perform.

Most notable in Roe’s competition career are competing in two global competitions, the 2010 World Martial Arts Games in Las Vegas and the 2011 World Karate Championships (WKC) in Cádiz, Spain.

For the Las Vegas competition, Roe was fortunate enough to place in a straight qualifier in Alberta, meaning he advanced directly to the world competition in Las Vegas. While he put his full effort into the competition and trained hard for the games, Roe said he was doing the competition more for the experience and didn’t know if he should expect to place.

“I didn’t really know what to expect going to worlds, I knew it was going to be high level competition.”

As a fan of UFC and in particular, a big fan of Georges St-Pierre, fighting in Man-

dalay Bay, where so many of the UFC bouts are held was also exciting to Roe, he said.

“That was a dream,” said Roe. “Even just to compete there. Just the experience alone that I would gain from that competition is kind of what drove me to chase after that.”

In the end, Roe did end up placing. He took first in continuous sparring, second in point sparring and third in his kata competition. He said his teammates also did well in the competition.

“We put together a pretty good Team Canada,” said Roe. “I think we ended up finishing with the most medals.”

For the WKC, Roe’s path was a bit different. He had to qualify at provincials in Alberta, then again at nationals in Ontario where Roe fought the two-time world champion and won. Finally, he was ready to train for worlds in Spain.

For this competition, Roe was fortunate to train under Sensei Manuel Juarez, whose hometown happens to be Cádiz. Roe

approached Juarez for assistance in training knowing that Juarez had trained some of the top fighters in Spain. Conditioning for the WKC was brutal, but well worth the effort, said Roe. “I wanted to be in shape,” said Roe. “I don’t want to be the guy who gets in there and is tired and can’t hold his hands up.”

It would seem Roe’s hard work paid off. He competed in the point and continuous sparring divisions in Cádiz and came away with a bronze medal in continuous sparring. He said there was a lot of tough competition in Spain and again an invaluable experience.

“It was an eye-opener.”

Roe said he enjoyed how karate always challenged him to better himself. Now that he has his full black belt, his looking forward to a new challenge as he shifts his focus to kickboxing training. He said he is looking forward to seeing how he performs in the sports’ full-contact environment. news@lacombeexpress.com

Bantam AA Rockets blown away by Edson

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express In the their first matchup of the season, the Edson Warriors have defeated the Lacombe Rockets.

In their last game of 2013, the Lacombe Bantam AA Rockets fought a tough match against the Edson Warriors but ended up losing the game 7-2.

Coach Sheldon Klessens said that Lacombe is a fantastic team when they play all 60 minutes of hockey.

But, when the Rockets stop giving their all every shift, as was the case in this game, things tend to go downhill.

“We took a couple shifts off, they scored a goal and it kind of just runs like the domino effect,” said Klessens.

“We have to learn to forget about that goal and just get it back.”

It was clear at the beginning of the game that Edson and Lacombe were fairly well matched.

Both teams kept pace with each other reasonably well and each scored once in the first to leave it tied 1-1 going into the second.

In the second period though, the Rockets slowly lost control of the game.

Edson out-skated and outpassed Lacombe and generally dominated the period, scoring four goals to the Rockets one and ending the period 5-2.

Klessens said it was sometime during the second period that the Rockets “Took a few shifts off,” allowing Edson to get a few goals up and gain momentum as well as shaking the Rockets’ morale.

“We stopped skating and stopped our physical play,” said Klessens.

not so much.”

Klessens said second period really had the Lacombe players feeling down on themselves. At the intermission, Klessens reminded his players that a few goals against, or even a loss, is not the end of the world.

His pep talk seemed to work.

After the second intermission, Lacombe tightened up their defense and goalie Jordan Gill played an outstanding third period.

However, Edson still managed two more goals, with one right before the buzzer to end the game 7-2 in favour of the Warriors.

Speed was certainly a factor in the game.

While the Rockets are a fast team, Edson was ultimately faster. With the lack of physical play, Lacombe

was unable to counter Edson’s speed. “(Edson has) some good, strong, fast forwards and they’re tough to keep up with,” said Klessens. “If you give them any room to skate, they are going to beat you.”

Physical play is something Klessens said the Rockets really have to work on.

He added that the team has many players who are small in size and can’t throw their body around as easily as some of their opponents.

Bantam is an age group where there is often great variance in the size of players.

As such, intimidation can be a factor for many of Lacombe’s players when going up against larger opponents, said Klessens.

had previously said that the Rockets needed to work on, were not a problem in the game against Edson.

In fact, a strong penalty kill prevented the Warriors from scoring at all on the power play.

On the other hand, Lacombe also failed to capitalize on its own power plays by scoring.

Despite the unfavourable outcome of the game against Edson, Klessens said he is happy with Lacombe’s position in the league.

He said they are currently ranked fourth in the nine team league.

ARTS & LEISURE Renowned guitarist to perform in Red Deer Toronto-based Jesse Cook is indeed a ‘bona fide musical phenomenon’

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Superlative guitarist Jesse Cook offers up more of his musical mastery on his latest project The Blue Guitar Sessions.

Fans can check out his skills when he plays the Memorial Centre in Red Deer on Feb. 28. Released in 2012, The Blue Guitar Sessions is Cook’s eighth studio CD – and he wanted to do something different on this particular outing. The disc was recorded on a pair of vintage microphones which he had searched for to replicate the mood of recordings from the Miles Davis era.

“I wanted to make a record that was more personal,” says Cook. “So I took my style of playing and put it into more of a ‘blue’ context. You know those kinds of records you put on and every track has this kind of melancholy?

There’s no dance tracks,” he adds with a laugh. “I like that music where it sounds like the whole thing takes place at two in the morning.”

Spending the summer of 2011 cottage hopping with his family, Cook set about writing for The Blue Guitar Sessions. “I was feeling kind of guilty about leaving work to go on vacation,” he recalls. “I thought if I write a song everyday I can do whatever I want. It became effortless. It was never a struggle probably because I wanted to do this record for so long.”

Like millions the world over, Cook got his hands on a copy of Adele’s 21 and played it excessively. But he saw something that few did, something which emboldened him to tackle a personal objective and create a ‘blue mood’ record.

“For me it was amazing that an album, where many of the tracks were just voice and piano, was a pop record. I loved it. It creates a world where we get to really hear her voice and also the pianist can be more expressive. It just becomes a much more intimate album, a much more personal album and I thought I would love to do that.

“Some of the tracks are just piano played by an actual musician – not just sequenced on a computer, and her singing. And maybe they’ll throw in some strings for good measure.”

Meanwhile, joining Cook on stage for the current tour are the musicians that have become as familiar to fans as Cook himself: Chris Church, Rosendo ‘Chendy’ Leon, Nicholas Hernandez and Dennis Mohammed.

The Toronto resident, who was born in Paris, heard plenty of flamenco-styled tunes during his formative years, and his own passion for playing guitar surfaced when he was just three. He started lessons at six.

“The influence of that type of music hit me at a very early age.”

His father later settled in the south of France, and Cook would visit him in his teens. He continued to soak up rumba flamenco music as his own musical gifts surfaced.

Indeed, he has been a leading proponent of the genre since bursting onto the world music scene with 1995’s

Tempest. Among his many accolades, in 2008, he won the silver medal in Acoustic Guitar magazine’s Players’ Choice Awards behind the legendary Paco De Lucia.

But as mentioned, Cook has steered clear of anything resembling flamenco on this record, producing a sound that allows listeners to appreciate each musician’s contribution. “It’s a big departure from the work I have done in the past,” he admits, “And there’s a fear that if you do something drastically different, will there still be someone there to listen to it if you change?

“But I feel the role of an artist is to change, to constantly push forward and try and come up with something new. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life repeating my first few records so I decided I was going to do it.

“The ‘less is more’ approach also requires a certain kind of discipline. When I’m making music, it’s easy to be seduced by a certain kind of musical thrill that comes from a really great groove.”

Keeping things relatively simple – where there is ‘space’ between the notes – can be tough. “For the longest time, I was a ‘more is more’ kind of a guy.”

Cook has never been wary of melding sounds to create a unique blend for each project. “I’ve always been somebody who has created hybrids, so I’ll take rumba flamenco and mix it with salsa, meringue or Arabic to create something new.

“I should also say that flamenco is part of what I play, but I also went to Berkley which is a jazz school and went to a conservatory in Canada, and I studied classical music as a kid so I have these different influences in my playing,” he said.

“Really, I’m interested in creating sounds I’ve never heard before.”
