H1N1 cases ‘tip of the iceberg’ BY SUSAN ZIELINSKI ADVOCATE STAFF Ten people with influenza have so far been hospitalized in Central Alberta.
H1N1, the 2009 pandemic flu, is the influenza A strain causing the most grief this season. As of Dec. 28, there were 83 lab-confirmed flu cases in Alberta Health Services Central Zone, of which 79 were H1N1.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, a Central Zone medical officer of health, said those cases are likely the “tip of the iceberg” as most people do not get tested. “Although the total number of cases of influenza is about the same as what we typically see in an average season,
there are more cases that are sicker,” Hinshaw said on Tuesday. “A number of the cases that required hospitalization have needed to be in ICU.”

RCMP couple have New Year’s baby BY MYLES FISH ADVOCATE STAFF Melanie Cappiello and Eric Stebenne celebrated the advent of another year as per usual on Tuesday evening with the popping of a champagne cork at the midnight hour.
A short time later, there was something much more exciting to celebrate — the birth of Red Deer’s 2014 New Year’s baby, their son Luca Stebenne. The couple’s third child came into the world at Red Deer Regional Hospital at 4:26 a.m. Wednesday, weighing a healthy seven pounds, 15 ounces. The common-law couple celebrated
New Year’s Eve on Tuesday night by watching Québécois television shows, and at midnight Stebenne had some champagne to celebrate. With Cappiello’s parents, visiting from B.C., they enjoyed the evening before turning in at 2 a.m.

A weather roller-coaster, bookended by significant snowfalls, brought highs and lows weather-wise to Central Alberta in 2013. Bill McMurtry, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said it was a year of swings in terms of weather, with unpredictability being at the forefront. “We saw significant swings in the weather from colder than usual to warmer than usual to drier than normal to wetter than normal, all in successive months,” said McMurtry. “It was quite a variation.” But after the up-and-down weather of the year, Red Deer got smacked in the face and all over the ground with a record snowfall in November, as well as a record two-month snowfall in November and December.

Dream home winner bought ticket on day of the draw BY MYLES FISH ADVOCATE STAFF Linda Boyd just did not want to pick up the phone. For one, she and partner Larry Petersen had just sat down for a late New Year’s Eve dinner and glass of wine around 8 p.m. Tuesday. On top of that, she did not recognize the number that was calling her. That caller was persistent, though, and after letting her home and cell phones ring out a few times, she decided to listen to one of the messages the caller had left: “Good evening, I’m looking for a Linda Boyd. My name is Len Sisco, and

if you’ve been following the press at all over the last couple of months you will know who I am. Please give me a shout back, as early as you can ... It is of great importance and a lot of excitement.” Those words alone still did not entirely convince her that she should return the call, though. What did finally make her think it was the real deal were the excited voices of others she could hear in the background. When she did return Sisco’s call, she got the news — of the 12,424 tickets in the barrel for the Kinsmen Dream Home draw, hers had been picked out; she had won the house.
