Take Penguin Plunge tomorrow at Rocky Point pier You can start the New Year off right — or at least cold — with a swim in the waters off Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park as part of the annual Penguin Plunge tomorrow (Jan. 1). Hundreds will brave frigid temperatures and friends and family members of the participants are invited to come down and cheer from shore. Hot chocolate will warm up the swimmers and the event, hosted annually by the Pleasantside Community Association, will also feature entertainment. Registration starts at noon on New Year’s Day and the plunge begins 1 p.m. at that boat launch at Rocky Point Park.

Rather than just recount, month by month, the notable news stories of 2013, The Tri-City News’ editorial staff instead chose to revisit some of their favourite feel-good stories of the year in the Tri-Cities, including: a pint-sized singer, a two-wheeled model and a creative teacher (below); a pair of city centennials and a cheeky sign (page 4); a school that has gone to the dogs and a national honour for Terry Fox (page 6); and local measures to honour history (page 7); plus some regional and provincial bits, too (page 8).

At 7, Tyson took a major step on stage THE STOry

When seven-year-old Tyson Venegas stepped on to the stage at the PNE Star Showdown in August with his threepiece band, you knew something special was about to happen.

The music flowed through the body of the Aspenwood elementary student, his fingers snapping and his foot popping out just as he sang “I get my kicks on Route 66.”

Certainly, there were many in the audience to cheer him on, including his family, friends, music teacher, Canadian big band leader Dal Richards and Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay.

But it wasn’t until the very end — before the judges delivered the result — that Venegas’ biggest fan walked up to give him a high-five: his idol, Michael Bublé, who

Middle school kids took on own economy THE STOry

Maple Creek middle school teacher Nichole Van Sickle decided to give her students a reallife lesson they would never forget. The Grade 6/7 French immersion teacher started a classroom economy that gave kids an opportunity to earn wages, sell services or products, pay rent or buy real estate and spend on credit.

They chose jobs — one was security officer — paid fines if they didn’t do their homework and bought candy, cupcakes and other goods with their“francs.”

Some became real estate tycoons by“renting” out their desks while others spent all their money and became homeless.

“When you give them real-life experiences in the classroom, they love it,”Van Sickle said.

Tyson took the $5,000 grand prize and the honour of being the youngest contestant ever to win the talent contest. Best of all, second place went to another Port Moody resident: Ben Freemantle, a ballet trainee in San Francisco.

Venegas’ mother, Iris, said her son used his winnings for music lessons in voice, jazz piano and trumpet; he also tucked some away for savings. And he has since been invited to perform at events such as the Canucks Place gala, the Surrey Music Marathon and fundraisers for Typhoon Haiyan.

“There’s also been some interest outside of Canada,”she hinted.

His future? A duet with Bublé, of course.

At the age of 15, Jessica Kruger became disabled after fainting and falling off a ladder.

This summer, the wheelchair athlete was featured on the front page of The Tri-City News — smiling sweetly in her pink wheelchair — and spoke of her dream of winning the Lise Watier Something Sweet contest.

The following month, Kruger was named the cosmetic company’s perfume line spokesperson after collecting the highest number of online votes.

“Hopefully, other girls and women with disabilities who are going through a similar journey will recognize that disability does not rob you of being beautiful, nor does it take away from the person that you truly are,”she said after her July win in Montreal.

The economy project caught on and soon other classrooms joined in, creating a true miniature capitalist society where prices rose and fell depending on the supply of goods, the stock market was risky,

and real estate prices fluctuated.

In June, the students will roll dice to see if their property’s value has gone up or down and are expected to pay their mortgages with interest.

“It’s been fun but a

big learning curve for the students,”the teacher said.

Shortly after The Tri-City News’ article was published, Nichole Van Sickle was invited

to speak at an Alberta teachers’ conference.

She’ll be on maternity leave in 2014 but plans to come back to the classroom frequently to help her replacement continue with the economy project.

Kruger, now 21, said she has flown twice to Montreal for photo shoots and a gala fundraiser since the win. And this month, she was offered another six-month contract with Lise Watier.

The fourth-year English Literature major at SFU will be graduating this spring and plans to take time off to train for the national wheelchair rugby team.

STILL ON STAGE IN ’13

Last year, 16-year-old Jennifer Gillis was on a national stage for CBC-TV’s reality competition Over the Rainbow. This year, the Gleneagle secondary student was again before millions of television viewers after being asked by then Canadian heritage minister (and Tri-City MP) James Moore to sing “O Canada” on Parliament Hill for the country’s 146th birthday.

Gillis wowed the crowd and was congratulated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Since then, the triple threat has been approached to record and, in March, she’ll be singing at the Orpheum as a featured performer for Awkward Stage Production’s Spotlight! Gillis will end her high school year by taking the lead role of Ariel Moore for the musical Footloose.

In February, the city of Port Moody erected a humorous Code of Conduct sign (right) in its ice rink that politely gave five reminders to potentially overly intense parents and spectators. It stated: “Please remember: 1. These are kids.

2. This is a game.

3. Parents should cheer for everyone.

4. The referees are human.

5.You and your child do not play for the Canucks.”

A photo of the sign was captured by The Tri-City News and posted to Facebook. And over the past 11 months, it has generated an unprecedented 140,180 views and 180 comments.The chatter has been, for the most part, supportive of the city (theVancouver Canucks issued a statement saying they had no knowledge the name would be used). At the time, city officials said they hoped to install more code of conduct reminders at outdoor fields; however, that has yet to happen, a spokesperson said.

100 years of PoCo Pride THE STOry

On April 18, 1913, Port Coquitlam’s pioneers put on their finest clothes and celebrated the inauguration of their new municipality.

One hundred years later, PoCo residents commemorated the city’s centennial in much the same way.

Dinners, dances and community events were held throughout the year, putting PoCo Pride on display for all to see.The city kicked off the centennial year with a launch party at the recreation complex in January and marked the April 18 inauguration date with its annual homecoming celebration.

Port Moody residents who attended a city council meeting on April 7, 2013 could be forgiven for thinking they had walked through a time warp.

In a way, they did.

Dressed in the fashions of 1913, Mayor Mike Clay and council re-enacted the first ever Port Moody council meeting, debating 100-year-old bylaws as part of their centennial celebration kickoff.

Much like their neighbours in Port Coquitlam, Port Moody packed 2013 with community events and birthday celebrations, including heritage house tours, a parade and the Centennial All Nations Festival at Rocky Point.

Foundation work for the future Coquitlam Central Station will begin next week as part of construction of the Evergreen Line.

Starting Jan. 6, crews will begin work on the station, followed by the installation of columns for the elevated guideway. Construction will take place behind a fenced-off area west of the bus loop and West Coast Express station platform.

The majority of the work will be done between Monday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. but EGRT Construction, the contractor for the project, said some nighttime work may also be required.

Excavation, casing and steel reinforcement installation, concrete pouring, drilling and welding are all expected to occur on the site and crews said they will do everything they can to minimize traffic disruptions.

Work on the elevated guideway columns and foundations for the future station will continue until the fall of 2014, when construction of the elevated guideway is scheduled to begin.

Orion is welcome at school

School District 43 is going to the dogs — and students and teachers are loving it.

In September 2013, Como Lake middle school students welcomed back Orion, a four-year-old yellow lab, along with their teacher and the dog’s handler, Lindsay Hill.

Orion has been trained by the Pacific Assistance Dog Society to be a warm and loving presence in the classroom, and this was the pooch’s second year in the Grade 6/7 classroom. Through a partnership between School District 43 and PADS, Hill was trained to be handler and started bringing Orion school to help students learn social and emotional learning.

Hill said research has found that specially trained dogs such as

Orion can teach students to regulate their behaviour because the canine has to work to control its behaviour in the classroom. Through specially designed lessons incorporating Orion, students were taught about selfregulation, compassion, tolerance and pet care.

Hill also found that Orion is a special help to students who are struggling with emotions or

who are having a bad day.

“I just can’t believe how many times I’ve witnessed this: If he can, he will literally climb into their lap and cuddle up, even with a student who is really agitated. He will get closer and closer until he gets them to let go of their anger.”

The premier vows a referendum will take place on any new funding sources for TransLink. It was an election promise of

the BC Liberals but by year end there’s no indication what the question will be.

Mayors want approval to levy a vehicle levy, a regional sales tax, or, eventually, regional road pricing. They fear a referendum defeat would be a major setback for the region.

The premier promises the Massey Tunnel will be replaced with a

new bridge.There’s no word on whether or not it or a replaced Pattullo Bridge will be tolled.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone indicates the province may review its tolling policy, which prevents reform of the current practice of just tolling bridges one at a time as they are rebuilt.

A red carpet event was held more than 33 years after Terry Fox ran his Marathon of Hope, starting in St. John’s, N.L., to raise money for cancer research.

The family foundation in Fox’s name has collected more than $600 million worldwide since he died in 1981 and runs are held around the world every year to honour his memory and raise money.

Carrying two bananas for energy and a bottle of water, a smiling Guy Black set out on his journey to honour Korean War veterans who fought and died in what has been called Canada’s “forgotten war.”

It was to be a huge undertaking — a 24-hour hour marathon that would take him across three city boundaries — Coquitlam, Burnaby and North Vancouver — and up two mountain summits — Burnaby and Seymour. In planning for two years, the June 21 walk was to raise awareness about people and issues about which Black cares deeply and it coincided with theYear of the Korean War Veteran, marking 60 year’s since

Earlier this year, Port Moody’s Patricia Skidmore saw her first book published: Marjorie, Too Afraid To Cry: A Home Child Experience. The work, which took years of research in two countries, traced her mother’s journey as a home child in 1937 to Fairbridge Farm School on Vancouver Island.

Marjorie spent five years there with her brother and sister, thousands of kilometres away from their family in northern England. That time at the farm school hardened her mother but, in 2010, she and other British home children got a formal apology — in person — from Prime Minister Gordon Brown on behalf of the British government.

Companies wanting to build a new garbage incinerator for Metro Vancouver unveil four proposed sites. Two would barge waste to Duke Point near Nanaimo or across Howe Sound to aboriginal land at Port Mellon.

The other two sites are in south Vancouver and at Delta’s Lehigh Cement plant, which would burn processed garbage instead of coal.

Smoked out of store

One of the busiest shopping days of the year was interrupted when someone set off a smoke bomb on Boxing Day in the Apple Store at Coquitlam Centre.

Deal hunters were evacuated at around 3 p.m. Thursday while firefighters worked to ventilate the store. No other businesses were affected.

“They ignited it somehow and threw it in the store and ran out,” said Assistant Fire Chief Rod Gill.

The smoke bomb, he added, is a common firework and is often avail-

able around Halloween.

It was lit in the back corner of the store and quickly filled the area with smoke.

Staff at the shop called 911, evacuated all of the customers and shut the giant glass doors to keep the smoke from escaping into the rest of the mall.

Many people snapped photos of the incident and posted the pictures on Twitter.

Gill said it took firefighters about half an hour to vent the smoke out of the building and the store did not re-open for the rest of the day.

solvents behind fire at Gleneagle school

Industrial solvents are being blamed for causing a minor fire Dec. 23 at Coquitlam’s Gleneagle secondary school.

Earlier in the day, piles of carpets were removed and dumped next to a metal door outside the main building. Fire investigators believe that solvents used to weaken the glue holding down the carpets may have heated up and caught fire.

“I think we had a bit of spontaneous combustion,” said Coquitlam Fire Chief Wade Pierlot. “If you take a solvent rag and even if you ring it out, in the proper conditions, it will catch on fire.”

Fortunately, the fire was outdoors and underneath one of the school’s sprinklers. By the time firefighters arrived, most of the flames had been extinguished and crews were mainly dealing with steam.

Pierlot said the rug pile was pulled apart and doused with water in order to ensure that the fire did not start again.

Damage was limited, the chief added, noting that flames had caused a slight discolouration on the door next to the pile of burning carpets. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Franca Aere, Coquitlam Centre’s general manager, told The Tri-City News the mall has a property-wide security camera system in place.

“Coquitlam Centre... has an excellent working relationship with the Coquitlam RCMP detachment,” she said in an email. “We will provide whatever assistance we can to assist in apprehending the individual(s) responsible.”

fter a season of over-indulging, many Canadians will wake up Jan. 1 and say this is the year they get heart-healthy.

That wake-up call to become more active and eat better can’t come a moment too soon, according to the Canadian Medial Association. The CMA’s latest report on the nation’s heart health says we’re not doing very well — in fact, we’re almost on life support.

Across the nation, fewer than 10% of Canadian adults meet the criteria for “ideal” cardiovascular health, which means most still don’t get enough exercise (at least 30 minutes of walking per day), and most don’t eat properly (consuming five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day). People are getting heavier and we see this everywhere, and in our own waistlines, which seem to expand with each passing year.

But adults aren’t alone in risky health behaviours.

According to the study, only about 20% of kids between 12 and 19 years are making lifestyle choices to keep them healthy — including being active for an hour or more a day.

Where is all this heading? The bad news is unless people’s habits change, there will be more incidences of diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart attacks and stroke.

If you think our hospitals are crowded now, imagine what the wards will be like a few years from now.

The sad part is that many baby boomers are planning for long lives. Unless they make changes now, however, they will be sick or disabled for 10 of those years, according to a Heart and Stroke Foundation report released in 2013. Ironically, most boomers think they are healthy but in fact many are stressed, sedentary, eat poorly and drink too much alcohol.

Could this be the year Canadians change those statistics and turn this unhealthy ship around?

Pass the veggies while we think about it.

An orderly schedule of legislature sittings, one in the spring and one in the fall.

I canvassed this topic with Premier Christy Clark in our year-end interview and got the usual runaround about how it’s always been optional since old Gordon What’s-his-name set the schedule of sittings and elections more than a decade ago. Spring is for the budget and MLAs sit in the fall if they need to discuss legislation.

They need to, all right, but what governments want to do is ram it through as fast as they can, so that’s what they do. The last couple of years of this have been a sham worthy of a South American banana republic, with

three chambers running simultaneously and opposition members trying to prepare as they run down the hallways.

It leads to mistakes in new laws and adds to the public’s cynicism about the whole business but it gets things done with minimum exposure of the government to criticism. Prime Minister Stephen Harper would approve.

A political debate about real issues, rather than just a competition to score points in an endless election campaign.

I appreciate that this is hopelessly naive but setting aside enough time to consider issues could, at least in theory, lead to that happening occasionally.

Certainly the hastily staged mock combat of our legislature today isn’t winning new friends for any political party. The main growth area today is people who have given up on the whole thing.

An opposition with ideas.

The BC NDP will have another leadership contest in 2014 and it had better bring more

modern policy to the table than in the last one.

Remember the big issues in that pillowfight? Me neither. I had to look them up.

Health care? Local organic carrots in hospital food. Forest industry? A job protection commissar to force the mills to stay open. Resource development? The NDP is for it, unless you’re against it.

These guys need a Tony Blair-type makeover. They need to be for something and they need to leave the past behind.

to suggest that walking to the corner is good exercise? When there’s a 24-hour news cycle to fill, it’s a scandal!

How many people know that Canada Post’s unfunded pension liabilities amount to $6.5 billion as it continues to pay a dwindling workforce to hand out mostly advertising flyers?

Should the corporation just keep doing that until it runs out of cash? Are taxpayers really expected to maintain another two-tier service that’s only available to selected urban people?

Media that care about more than conflict.

News organizations are in bad shape these days and the competition for a rapidly fragmenting audience is having some ugly effects.

One thing that needs to go is obsessive coverage of who’s winning and who’s losing.

If the news media are going to be interested mainly in the gaffes and gotcha moments, is it any surprise that’s what politicians try to provide?

The Canada Post announcement that it has to wind up home delivery offers a recent example. Is it really so outrageous for the CEO

Facts to go with opinions.

Whether it’s the government’s fantasy figures on job creation or the opposition’s arithmeticchallenged child poverty claims, serious problems can’t be understood, much less solved, without defining them accurately. Submitting government advertising to scrutiny by the auditor general to make sure it is accurate and nonpartisan would be a good place to start.

Hydro responds to column on Burrard Thermal closure The Editor, Re. “Shutting PoMo’s Burrard Thermal makes no sense” (Opinion, The Tri-City News, Dec. 13).

I would like to offer some additional context around BC Hydro’s decision to stop generating electricity at Burrard Thermal generating station by 2016. Since Burrard was built in the 1960s, it has been an important part of BC Hydro’s system. Over the years, we made upgrades to its fuel and emissions systems to allow it to operate with the lowest possible impact on nearby communities. But in the last 10 years, its role has been increasingly limited and, in the last three years, it has produced less than 60 gigawatt hours in a year — equivalent to the annual demand of 5,500 homes.

While Burrard Thermal currently plays an emergency backup role, it would require significant investment to maintain this capability in the long-term. BC Hydro has three key projects underway to im-

prove the capacity and reliability of our system: two new 500-megawattgenerating units on the Columbia River, a fifth 500-kilovolt transmission line from the Interior to the Lower Mainland, and a third transformer

at Meridian Substation in Coquitlam. These projects will allow BC Hydro to better respond to emergencies in the Lower Mainland without relying on generation at Burrard.

Once the new Interior-

to-Lower Mainland transmission line is in service, we will have five 500-kilovolt transmission lines coming into the Lower Mainland from within B.C. We plan the system to be able to meet the highest loads on the

Camara hopes to bring another container of gifts back to Africa

It’s been two months since Djiba Camara returned from his longawa i t e d t r i p h o m e to Guinea but the Coquitlam man is already planning to return to Africa — this time with more gifts to help his former countrymen improve their lives.

The trip to his homeland was “life changing” for the soccer coach, who plans another trip in the summer.

As he suspected, nothing was simple in his efforts to get to the land of his birth. Dropping off the donated contents of his shipping container proved to be no easy task. He had spent months collecting clothes, electronics, sports equipment, uniforms and even sewing machines from Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship

Finally, after days of waiting and worrying,

he was told he could unload the container in the dark of night using flashlights, with police officers standing guard.

The officers were there as much for his protection as they were to prevent the donations from

being looted.

Poverty and crime is extremely high in Conakry, Guinea, one of the world’s poorest areas. It is so corrupt and dangerous that no non-government organization will go to there.

That’s why Djiba, who grew up in Conakry before becoming an international soccer player, wanted to return.

Eventually, he was able to distribute shoes, clothing, books, school supplies and soccer balls to a few schools, and was pleased with the response.

“The students welcomed me with a soccer match,” said Camara.

“They were jumping for joy when they saw what I had brought.”

He also managed to get eight soccer balls and jerseys to a school in Liberia as well.

But while they were buoyed by the balls, their hunger broke his heart.

There were some days he didn’t even eat because there was no food.

A glass of water costs 1,500 Francs.

“What I saw in Africa changed me a lot,” said Camara, who is known for his cheery disposition. Some things he doesn’t want to talk about because he wants to stay positive for the people of this impover-

ished country. “I have to focus on the positive.”

In a country that’s predominantly Muslim, he was met with some resistance for his Christian faith. But during a soup kitchen at a local church, he found Muslims lining up, too, which was positive.

It showed how desperate people were for food.

Still, despite the need, he wasn’t able to distribute all the donations, so some have been locked up at a home owned by a government official.

He also had difficulties returning to Coquitlam — his plane home was cancelled because it was deemed too dangerous to land.

Camara said he was told that an Al Qaeda shooting and attacks in neighbouring Mali had cancelled all flights in both countries.

“I didn’t know when I was going home,” said the certified FIFA coach, who previously trained the women’s Whitecaps team.

It was another week before the next plane landed in Guinea but

that didn’t guarantee him a seat — money did, so he had to fork over more cash for a seat he had already paid for.

Still, Camara plans to return next summer, when he will distribute the rest of those donations and other goods he plans to collect, including bread makers and dry soups for distribution.

Although electricity is spotty, they have generators that can be used to power the equipment — at least when gas is available. Camara says the equipment would be put to good use.

• Djiba Camara is collecting clothing, shoes, purses, sports equipment; items that people can use to start their own enterprise, such as bread makers, sewing machines, ice-cream makers and photocopiers. He is also looking to collect electronics for the kids such as Game Boys and Nintendo products.

Mossom Creek Hatchery flooded with donations Money will be used to rebuild Donations and offers of support continue to pour into the Mossom Creek Hatchery, which was destroyed by fire earlier this month.

The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2399 was the latest organization to offer some funds to help with the rebuilding effort and, last week, the city of Port Moody approved $10,000 in emergency

funding for the organization.

People have also been digging out photographs and newspaper clippings to help the hatchery rebuild its archives. Residents and supporters are also welcome to donate.

Cheques can be sent to the Mossom Creek Hatchery (300 Ioco Rd., Port Moody, B.C. V3H 2V7) and made payable to the Port Moody Foundation. Be sure to include “For Mossom Creek Project” in the cheque memo line so funds

can be directed accordingly. Tax receipts will be issued for donations through the Port Moody Foundation.

Online donations will also be accepted by going to the Port Moody Foundation website (www.portmoodyfoundation.bc.ca) and choosing Mossom Creek Hatchery fund under the Donate Now button.

On Dec. 11, fire broke out at the Mossom Creek Hatchery, destroying their main education centre along with thousands of fish eggs and chum.

The hatchery started as a school project in 1976 by Ruth Foster and Rod MacVicar, teachers at Centennial secondary school and is run by the Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society.

“I don’t think any of us could believe it,” said coach Debbie Carroll of

the gold medal win. “It’s like, we are now Team BC. I had tears again in my eyes because you are just so happy for them.”

It was the second provincial crown for Team Habkirk, who just a week earlier won the provincial high school title with Centennial secondary. The Habkirk rink, which also included Zac Umbach, got past Vancouver Island’s Frances Kelsey secondary 5-2 in the final game.

“We ran them out of rocks in the last end,” said Carroll.

It was a remarkable

feat considering it was just the second year the school had fielded a curling team in recent history.

“My hope is that it will kick start more high school students to take up curling,” said Carroll, who joined fellow Centennial grad Lisa Mulzet, who now teaches at the school, to bring curling back to the school.

Centennial is steeped i n c u r l i n g h i s t o ry.

Alumnus Brent Pierce was on the team that won the 2000 Canadian Curling Championships.

The BCJLL coach of the year expects the Adanacs will challenge for a sixth consecutive Minto Cup berth next year, anticipating all but five players will return to the lineup.

Campbell singles out his family, saying their support is the reason he has made it this far in his hockey career.

“My mom, uncle, and step-dad are huge reasons why this has all happened,” he said.

Adanacs rocked by mid-season shakeup

Rams topple Ravens for B.C. title The Terry Fox Ravens fell one drive short in their attempt to stop the Mt. Douglas Rams from claiming their third straight B.C. high school football title.

The Rams held off the Ravens 32-27 in the AAA finals under the lights at BC Place.

Terry Fox fought back from an early 12-0 deficit and were threaten-

ing with a go-ahead drive when Mt. Douglas all-star Marcus Davis silenced the comeback hopes with an interception.

Th e R ave n s h e l d down the No. 2 ranking for much of the year, compiling a 6-1 regular season record. And the Ravens seem poised for another big season next year with a lineup fea-

turing several returning veterans led by quarterback Conner McKee and running back Mike West.

Terry Fox had a number of players named to the 2013 all-star team.

McKee was selected as all-star quarterback while his favourite target Jason Shamatutu earned the nod as a receiver. Mike Beck was

selected as an offensive lineman and Kyle Sagmoen was named among the province’s best on the defensive line. Linebacker Isaiah Stevens and defensive back Kyle Miller were also named to the allstar team. West, who also played defensive end, was selected as the Grade 11 player of the year.

The Coquitlam Adanacs were shaken up by a small-scale mutiny that saw the captain go down without the ship.

Adanacs’ goalie and reigning Western Lacrosse Association MVP Nick Rose is said to have orchestrated the trade that sent him along with teammates Dane Dobbie and Damon Edwards to the first place Langley Thunder. In exchange, t h e A’ s r e c e i v e d Brandon Goodwin, Matt MacGrotty and the Thunder’s third round draft pick in 2015.

I n t h e a f t e r m at h of the blockbuster deal, the Adanacs parted ways with general manager Randy Delmonico. He was replaced by Jr. Adanacs assistant coach Kevin Hill. Hill was voted top goaltender in West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association in 2010 and 2011.

The Adanacs were mired in fifth place at the time of the trade in

early July. By the time the end of the month rolled around, head coach Bob Salt had his team on a roll, winning five straight to punch their ticket to the postseason.

“We’re basically a new team here from a couple weeks ago.

I think I was the only guy who thought we had a decent team,” said Salt. “Everybody seems to think I was rebuilding, I wasn’t rebuilding. Guys wanted to leave so they left. I’m not going to coax anybody to come play for us.”

The Adanacs couldn’t keep pace with the WLA regular season champion, being swept by Langley in four games. The Thunder lost to the Victoria Shamrocks in the WLA final.

Bowled over by a perfect game A t 1 6 ye a r s o l d , Jeremy Chatt has already reached the pinnacle of his game.

The Port Coquitlam teen did something no youth bowler in B.C. has accomplished in more than five years and nobody at PoCo Bowl has achieved in 17: He bowled a perfect game. That’s 12 straight strikes for a 450 score.

“It just felt like a regular game at the beginning,” said Chatt, who joined PoCo Bowl at age nine. “Everything

felt smoothly… like it was a well-oiled machine, more or less. I didn’t feel like anything special was going on.”

Then the balls kept firing dead straight down lucky lane No. 7, the pins kept blasting apart and the tension kept mounting. Before he knew, about 30 persons — some who halted their personal action to watch — had gathered behind him to witness what turned out to be one fantastic feat.

“Around the ninth frame, after nine strikes in a row, I felt I can do this. Before that, I knew I could choke at anytime,” Chatt said with a sheepish grin. “In the eighth frame, everybody started huddling around. I just didn’t bother looking at anybody because I knew my adrenaline would get going and it would be too hard to stop.”

11… then… just one more…

“I lobbed the ball out there a little bit too far and it skipped a couple times on the lane.

It looked like it was going to hit the right two [pins] but it somehow hooked in and hit the head pin and they all went down,” Chatt, who owns a 205 average and whose previous best was “six or seven” straight strikes.
