A two-car incident involving a Prius rear-ended by a Hyundai Accent happened in the northbound lane of Trans-Canada Highway just north of Somenos overpass at 12:30 p.m. Friday. ayson Shand is hoping the Grinch who stole his eight-year-old son’s Christmas gift — a 55cc quad — might have a change of heart.

Shand worked out a great deal to buy the four-wheeler from a friend for $75 before it was swiped from the friend’s house in Mesachie Lake.

“I had this great deal lined up with my buddy,” Shand said Dec. 23. “It must have happened last week some time. He went out to the car port to work on it, tune it up before we

bought it, and it was gone.”

Little Jakeb missed out Christmas morning because Shand hasn’t been able to find another deal like the one he struck with his friend; most similar quads are going used for $300 to $500 online.

Unfortunately, the father and painting contractor can’t afford to fork out that much as he’s been off work for more than a month.

“That was his big gift, and he might have been disappointed with the lack of toys under the tree, but then he would have opened the curtain and seen the quad and it probably would have freaked him out,” he said.

SIA requests dumping stay be lifted for 40,000 tonnes Forty-thousand tonnes of dirty soil covered SIA’s Christmas list.

But south-end folks claim that’s a contaminated gift they never want delivered by B.C.’s environmental Santa Claus.

In a motion filed late on Dec. 24, South Island Aggregates asked the Environmental Appeal

Board to lift its stay order and allow 40,000 tonnes of contaminated soil to be dumped immediately on SIA’s property — before the EAB hears a March appeal of SIA’s soil-treatment permit allowing five million tonnes.

Those permitted soils hold toxins, including fuel, that sparked appeals by the Shawnigan

Residents Association, and the Cowichan Valley Regional District.

“The SRA believes this latest application by SIA simply asks the EAB to revisit a matter that has already been determined in the earlier ruling that prevents dumping of contaminated soil by SIA until the appeals are decided.”

he coast’s starfish are dying horrific deaths while scientists scramble to figure out why.

They’re also worried about how seastar wasting syndrome will affect ecosystems spanning Alaska to Cowichan to California.

“Since late August, we started noticing sunflower seastars dying off quite quickly,” said marine biologist Paula Romagosa, curator of Sidney’s Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.

“The coastal diving community got involved doing survey dives. So far we don’t know why,” she said of the starfish die-off involving six or seven species.

“I’m quite scared, to be honest. We can’t figure out what it is, so there’s no way to control it — or know if it’ll affect our food sources like fish.”

Peter Luckham, a Thetis Island dive master who piloted Chemainus’ dive-reef jet, said he was stunned by the seastar decimation. He sends seastar data to the Vancouver Aquarium.

“It’s like science fiction. It decomposes into a pile of goo. If you could hear a scream under water, they’d be saying ‘I’m melting’, just like out of the Wizard Of Oz.” Populations including sunflower, sun, basket, leather, pink, common purple, vermillion, and blood stars are dying, Luckham said.

“Brittle stars are the only ones I’ve noted not affected.”

“We believe it’s some sort of virus,” said Romagosa, “but we haven’t been able to prove it yet.”

Other samples have been sent to UBC, UVic, and California universities.

“It’s pretty shocking. We were surprised seeing seastars in dives during research around Howe Sound in some state of decay or meltdown.”

Divers started noticing melting and dissolving seastars in September in Howe Sound.

“It started with sunflower seastars, but has spread to other spices,” said Romagosa. “California purple seastars are being affected more than other species.”

Gibbs said she’d never seen starfish deaths on this scale.

“Not on this magnitude. Before this, we saw an overabundance of these animals when they were just piled on top of each other on Hutt Island.”

Romagosa noted “it could be nature taking its course from overpopulation — or something we humans have done.”

Luckham was “quite alarmed” about the seastar’s demise between Nanaimo and Victoria.

“It appears to be some kind of pathogen, but I’m not a biologist.

It completely wipes out the entire population.”

But the dive veteran hadn’t seen the disease’s wrath below 70 feet. “That

indicates it’s also temperature sensitive, and not surviving in deeper water.

“What worries me is stars are a big predator; they eat everything they can find including other stars,” he said of the critter keeping others in balance.

He and Romagosa doubted the starfish crisis was sparked by Pacific radiation from the meltdown of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant.

“It’s hard to believe it’s radiation affecting the Vancouver area before the closest proximity to Japan. It could be an environmental reaction to overpopulation; it could be sewage, or pollution. Some species disintegrate in a couple of days, oth-

ers will last longer,” Romagosa said.

Dan Jacques, a diver and dock master at Maple Bay Yacht Club, was also shocked seeing seastar carnage in areas around the island, one of the Earth’s biggest seastar populations.

“There’s no way you can tell me this is natural. It’s a big wake-up call,” he said. “It’s just crazy.”

Crazy enough the legs are dropping off seastars he’s photographed “and they’re just rotting.”

Romagosa said the wasting-syndrome deaths look more like a viral infection — perhaps resembling the human ebola virus — affecting adult seastars.

“Some get bald spots, and get really skinny, and start to disintegrate.

With others, their guts start coming through the pores in their skin. It’s a horrible sight to see; it’s terrifying.

Their legs fall off and start walking away from the body.”

It’s tough to tell if seastars are in pain, she explained.

“They don’t have a brain, but do have a nervous system so they do have pain receptors, but we’ve seen no signs of distress from the ones in the aquarium. They go about their normal activities until they just fall apart.”

Romagoa’s other worry is about vital starfish roles in the food chain.

“Most seastars are top predators so this will affect everything in the food chain below them. All populations that depend on the seastars as a control system will start going unchecked.”

“The biggest thing,” said Gibbs, “is getting photographic evidence to us.”

usiness leaders and politicians say they have eliminated some red tape for local entrepreneurs with the launch of the Mid-Island InterCommunity Business Licence.

Starting Jan.1, businesses can purchase a licence that allows them to legally operate in Duncan, North Cowichan and 10 other communities from here to Campbell River.

“Up until now, there has been a lot of red tape for businesses,” Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell said during a news conference at a construction site Thursday in her constituency. “This is a helping hand for them.”

There were other concerns raised by town and city politicians and others about how cash-strapped municipalities would find the staff and resources to do any enforcement related to non-complying businesses.

There were also concerns raised by individual communities about losing business-licence revenue from the new program, money that many communities roll over to chambers of commerce to run tourist information booths and other programs.

Kim Burden, the executive director of the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce said data from other places in the province that have this type of mobile licence shows towns and cities don’t lose revenue.

She tried to paint a picture of how this would help businesses.

“We are within spitting distance of four or five communities that all have business licences,” said Burden. “It’s great for our members to move freely between those jurisdictions

doing work in, say, Parksville one day and Lake Cowichan the next, can now purchase a business licence in their home community and add this new licence for a fee.

To comply with the current bylaws of most communities, businesses must have a licence to operate in each separate community. The price of this supplementary licence has not been released.

“We have projects scattered throughout Central Vancouver Island so we are thrilled about (the new licence),” said Rob McGorman, owner of Bayshore Construction in Parksville.

“It will save us time and money and support the future success of our business.”

There are still a few wrinkles officials would like to see ironed out. For example, there are no requirements for small businesses based in unincorporated regional district communities

without having to go through the process of getting a business licence in every jurisdiction they work in.

“And it brings other businesses into our jurisdiction that might not normally come here, to perhaps fill a void. And it opens up that co-operation between municipalities.”

Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas said he agreed with that bigger-picture view.

“I think it makes a lot of sense and will promote economic growth in the entire region,” said Douglas. “We can’t be insular. I believe in shopping local but I also believe in being competitive. It’s sort of like tourism — we shouldn’t fight each other to get tourists just to one town. We want them (tourists) all on Vancouver Island and share them.”

The 12 participating municipalities in the Mid-Island program are: Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland, Duncan, Lake Cowichan, Ladysmith, Nanaimo, North Cowichan, Parksville, Port Alberni, and Qualicum Beach.

No riverboat gambling: River fisherman guides rescue crews on the use of their new jet-powered rescue boat Malcolm Chalmers

iving on the second largest body of water on Vancouver Island you’d think our rescue services would have equipment to work on the water.

But we didn’t. Until now.

“A boat is a safer way to operate,” says fire chief Doug Knott about water rescues.

“We’ve certainly used one over the years, many times borrowing and using our own stuff.”

After 1 1/2 years of fundraising, the Lake Cowichan Volunteer Fire department finally raised enough money to buy one.

took delivery of their new fire rescue boat. It’s a 65-horsepower jet-drive ridged-hull inflatable with fire and rescue equipment added to it.

The jet-drive pontoon boat is a little different to use than a recreational boat so Knott has arranged to have the men learn to drive it from experienced jet boat users.

When Kenzie Cuthbert heard the news he offered to help train the fireman to navigate the river — “the currents, the boulders and how to manipulate the boat using the jet motor.”

Cuthbert is a professional guide and fisherman on the Cowichan River and he is well-versed in jet boat use.

On Dec. 7, members received hands-on training, with Cuthbert pointing out

some of the hazard areas on the river as they practiced manoeuvreing the boat in the shallow water.

Kenzie took two firefighters at a time downriver, past Little Beach, noting boulders and areas to avoid then they did some full-speed runs back up the river to the lake.

Firefighter Tyler Knott was happy to be able to train with Cuthbert. He was surprised how differently the jet boat handled than regular boats.

“That was the number one thing we learned today,” he said.

ere are a few things I’d like to see in B.C. political life in the coming year, but won’t.

An orderly schedule of legislature sittings, one in the spring and one in the fall.

I canvassed this topic with Premier Christy Clark in our year-end interview, and got the usual runaround about how it’s always been optional since old Gordon what’s-his-name set the schedule of sittings and elections more than a decade ago. Spring is for the budget and MLAs sit in the fall if they need to discuss legislation.

They need to all right, but what governments want to do is ram it through as fast as they can, so that’s what they do. The last couple of years of this have been a sham worthy of a South American banana republic, with three chambers running simultane-

ously and opposition members trying to prepare as they run down the hallways.

It leads to mistakes in new laws and adds to the public’s cynicism about the whole business, but it gets things done with minimum exposure of the government to criticism. Stephen Harper would approve.

A political debate about real issues, rather than just a competition to score points in an endless election campaign.

I appreciate this is hopelessly naive, but setting aside enough time to consider issues could, at least in theory, lead to that happening occasionally.

Certainly the hastily staged mock combat of our legislature today isn’t winning new friends for any political party. The main growth area today is people who have given up on the whole thing.

An opposition with ideas.

The B.C. NDP will have another leadership contest in 2014, and they’d better bring more modern policy to the table than they

Media that care about more than conflict.

One thing that needs to go is obsessive coverage of who’s winning and who’s losing.

If the news media are going to be interested mainly in the gaffes and gotcha moments, is it any surprise that’s what politicians try to provide?

Facts to go with opinions.

Whether it’s the government’s fantasy figures on job creation or the opposition’s arithmetic-challenged child poverty claims, serious problems can’t be understood, much less solved, without defining them accurately.

Submitting government advertising to scrutiny by the Auditor General to make sure it is accurate and non-partisan would be a good place to start.

Credit unions not banks and should not be taxed like them

Dear editor I hope you will join Elizabeth May in raising the serious questions of practice, natural justice and human rights that the unconscionable detention and jailing of Richard Jerman on Penelakut Island should raise. It is frightening to think that if this had happened to the vast majority of First Nations people on any reserve in Canada, they would have likely found themselves in a U.S. jail with no recourse. In fact, others arrested at the same time as Mr. Jerman and held in the same detention centre at which he ended up in Vancouver, were all deported. Some dumped across the U.S. border in Blaine, Washington, with absolutely nothing.

Because Mr. Jerman has friends and colleagues that he has made over decades of service to the community — both Native and non-Native — his case did not have that result.

But it must raise, in our minds and those of our parliamentarians, the question of how an arm of the Canadian government can be allowed, without apparent standards or principles, to act in just about any way it pleases. That behaviour is characteristic of a much different form of government than we believe we have. I trust that Canadians will use this teachable moment to demand of Parliament a full review of the impact of this failure of natural justice.

t’s been about 10 or more years since Cowichan hosted a meeting to help sex and love addicts.

And much has changed since, with modern technology enabling more online opportunities to fuel fixations, explained a new local group’s facilitator, George (who didn’t want his last name printed as to protect the anonymity of the program).

“With the internet, there’s much involvement with pornography, and with things like chat lines, and it’s not necessarily healthy,” George said.

Sexual addiction can loosely be defined as any form of self-destructive sexual behaviour where the person involved feels he or she is out of control.

Internet porn addictions is just one example of many ailments being discussed during the new sessions.

Other issues can range from things like compulsive masturbation to sexual anorexia (loss of appetite for romantic-sexual interaction with

their partner). Everyone is different, said George.

“Often newcomers that come are often plagued with a couple of things,” he said. “For newcomers, it’s all ‘My goodness, there’s a lot of stuff and a lot of information (to digest).’”

“But the idea is not to overwhelm and to get people relaxed.”

George recommends folks who might be candidates search out the work of Dr. Patrick Carnes.

From 1996 until 2004, Carnes was the clinical director for Sexual Disorder Services at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona.

During his time there, he developed a therapeutic technology based on his landmark study of the recoveries of 1,000 sex addicts.

This work is summarized in Don’t Call It Love, which has been described by The New Age Journal as “the best book on the market about addiction and its costs and consequences.”

Health care team expected to start soon

owichan Lake is about to get a whole lot healthier.

Island Health confirmed last week that the roughly 6,500 residents of Lake Cowichan and surrounding area are just a few weeks away from their promised primary health care team.

“Enhanced primary health services through a primary health care team will begin providing programs and services in early 2014,” the provincial health authority (formerly VIHA) announced in a press release.

The team will be located at the Kaatza Health Centre, 58 Cowichan Ave. West and will begin delivering services early in the new year.

A nurse practitioner has also been hired for the Cowichan Lake area. The nurse practitioner will begin practising at the Brookside Medical Clinic in the New Year.

“This year we went from three doctors to zero, and in the New Year we’ll have two full time doctors and however many doctors work out of the walk-in clinic and then the nurse practioner,” Lake Cowichan Mayor Ross Forrest said.

The two new docs will have an international background, said the mayor.

We’re also getting the two doctors through a return of service program, where international doctors do a course through (Vancouver’s) St. Paul’s Hospital and two year course at the

U of Victoria that allows them to practise in Canada,” he said.

“The doctors we have coming are from, I believe, Chile, and we’re getting two of them Aug. 1.”

Forrest said the town entertained quite a few doctors in the international program to try and convince them to work in Lake Cowichan.

“There were eight openings on Vancouver Island and we knew we would have a real good chance because some of the other areas that had openings weren’t quite as attractive communities as we are.”

Community information sessions will be held in the New Year when residents can meet the primary health care team and get information on the health services that will be provided and how to access these services.

Dates and locations for the information sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.

The new arrangement arises from circumstances that left the community temporarily doctor-less.

“There was a bit of a panic in the community,” Forrest said.

“So we formed a committee called CHOOSE Cowichan Lake and we worked together with VIHA’s physician recruitment and also with the Cowichan Family Practitioner group and they’ve done a tremendous job for us,” he said.

Reischman kicks off the new year with strings attached

Lovers of the mandolin won’t have to wait long to get their fix in 2014.

Mandolin maestro John Reischman is in Chemainus next weekend with his new band, the Pine Siskins.

“As one of the acoustic music world’s top-ranked mandolin players and composers, veteran artist John

Reischman is renowned for his exquisite taste, tone and impeccable musicianship,” event promotional material states.

“As an original member of the legendary Tony Rice Unit, Reischman helped to define the new acoustic instrumental scene in the early 1980s, with appearances on the band’s groundbreaking Rounder

albums Still Inside and Backwaters. He cemented his reputation touring and recording for many years with the Bay Area’s eclectic Good Ol’ Persons.”

efining an upcoming season is much more than going with the moment’s muse for Mark DuMez, although artistic propensity does play a part.

No matter what types of factors the Chemainus Theatre Festival artistic director considers, ultimately he ends up being tickled with the lineup.

This year’s highlights includes bringing bighit Buddy Holly impersonator back, staging for the first time epic musical Les Miserables and scooping Canadian premieres of Jeeves in Bloom and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol.

“I love the season as a whole,” DuMez said.

“It has balance. There are classics, drama and some really funny material as well.”

“There will be artistically arresting moments, some tears, lots of laughs and intrigue to boot,” he predicted. “I think there will be deep and emphatic engagement in every show, which translates to a really great experience for our audience.”

“I then read lots of plays, consult with other artists, and look at New York and London playbills. If the summer permits, I visit Shaw or Stratford and other theatre companies here in the West, talk to playwrights, talk with other theatre companies, volunteers, board members, staff members, and read our patron surveys.”

There’s also budgets to consider.

And part of the equation is DuMez asking: “Does the show tell a convincing story? What is at its core? Where is the heart of the story?

Who will be interested in the work? Is there balance in the season — something for everyone? Will we be pushed artistically? Will the audience be engaged? Do we have the capacity to handle it?”

This year’s crop answered all thosse questions.

“Each show has a great feel to it and a central story,” said DuMez. “It has followed a pattern we’ve cultivated over the years of a

revue to open, engaging comedy in the spring, along with an all-Canadian story, a big summer musical and then something different for the fall before the holiday show.

“A newness comes from the two shows that are Canadian premieres (Jeeves and Sherlock), from the scope of the summer musical (Les Mis) and when we open a studio stage in the summer with a short run of a New York hit (Freud’s Last Session).

“There are some components we haven’t had before.”

The season’s kickoff is a proven hit: Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story (Feb. 11 to March 8) featuring Zachary Stevenson’s tribute to the ‘50s rocker which was a hit last spring.

Next is comic adventure Jeeves in Bloom (March 21 to April 26) which sees a peaceful English countryside turned upside-down after Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet, Jeeves, pay a visit.

That’s staged before the Second World War dramatic comedy Waiting for the Parade (May

9 to June 1).

DuMez is very excited about the Les Mis run. Based on the Victor Hugo 1862 novel this musical classic hits the stage June 20 and wraps up Sept. 7.

The theatre’s also promoting its annual KidzPlay show with the 2014 selection Robert Munsch-based Munsch-ercise (July 19 to Aug. 16).

Meanwhile, Freud’s Last Session, involving an adaptation of legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud hosting rising academic star C.S. Lewis as a guest to his home in London, begins Aug. 10 and runs until the 20.

Family comedy Over the River and Through the Woods (Oct. 3 to Nov. 8) will entertain audiences before the annual Christmas show, with this year’s holiday mystery, Sherlock Holmes and the case of the Christmas Carol (Nov. 21 to Dec. 22).

his year’s Chemainus Festival of Trees, hosted by the Chemainus Gardens, is being hailed as a huge success.

The festival, which is a nearly-monthlong fundraiser for the food bank, generated $3,101 through tree sponsorship, a silent auction and public donations in its third year, and Chemainus Gardens owner Len Wansbrough donated an additional $1,500.

On Dec. 21, festival co-ordinator Margaret Perry presented a cheque for $4,600 to the Chemainus Harvest House Food Bank.

“We thank all those who helped raise the bar on this year’s donations by more than $700,” she said.

Rick O’Doherty, vice-president of Harvest House, says a donation like this makes a huge difference because Harvest House can use this money to buy more food; it often gets a better price because they are a food bank, and they can often get food at wholesale prices.

Harvest House serves roughly 300 people in Chemainus and Crofton each week.

“As you can imagine, January, February and March are the most difficult time for food banks,” said O’Doherty. “We’re like squirrels; we need to benefit from the generosity at Christmas and keep that going. Christmas may come and go, but the food bank is every week.”

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Lea Marie Irvine on December 21, 2013 in Duncan, BC. Predeceased by her husband Gordon in 1987.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leila, known by many as Lee. She passed away in Duncan, the town of her birth. In her journey, Leila resided in several B.C. towns, returning to Duncan for her final years.

Leila enjoyed home. Decorating it reflected her creative talent. Also, working in her garden gave her much joy.

Leila is greatly missed by her loving husband, Arden, sons Tim and Andy, daughter Dawn, as well as three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

As Leila journeyed through this life she was guided by her unwavering faith in the Lord.

A celebration of Leila’s life will be held at the Shawnigan Alliance Church on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.

he Kerry Park Islanders are hosting the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s all-star game at Cowichan Arena Sunday,

Jan. 26.

“We figure we can put on a good show and showcase the game,’’ said Islanders’ owner Mark Osmond.

There will not be a prospects game as in past years, with the focus on the main event — the South Division against the North — at 3 p.m.

Kerry Park is in the South with Victoria, Saanich, Peninsula and Westshore.

Campbell River, Nanaimo, Comox Valley and Oceanside make up the North Division.

Division leaders Victoria and Campbell River will each be represented by five skaters, with all the others having three members in the game besides the goaltenders.

“We’re looking forward to hosting the league this year,’’ noted Osmond.

“Since we bought the team last season, our staff and players have worked

zone presses, full-court man presses, half-court zones, etcetera.’’

Earlier, Cowichan beat Heritage Woods 46-32, with Khan (14), Charles (13) and Connor Hayer (10) all hitting double digits.

Khan scored 26 in Cowichan’s 71-59 win over Lord Tweedsmuir.

Stingrays pick up pace

Penalties hit Caps at the wrong time

he Cowichan Valley Capitals can’t seem to string two victories together.

Coming off a huge offensive explosion in a 7-2 win over Trail, the Caps went down to a 5-2 defeat against the Nanaimo Clippers at Cowichan Arena Dec. 21 in their final game before the B.C. Hockey League’s Christmas break.

“The guys understand they lost that one, Nanaimo didn’t win it,’’ said Caps’ assistant coach Aaron Plumb.

The Caps twice held the lead in the first period on goals by Myles Powell and the first as a Capital for newcomer Taylor Allan, but the offense came up dry after that.

Nanaimo tied it early in the second period on a power play and the score stayed 2-2 until the Clippers’ Sheldon Rempal notched the eventual game-winner with 4:39 left in regulation time.

The Clippers added an empty-netter with 1:11 remaining and tallied again with goalie Robin Gusse back in the net just 13 seconds later.

The Caps are still chasing Nanaimo for third place in the Island Division.

“If we won that game, we would have been six points behind them,’’ said Plumb.

As much as the Caps would like to close the gap on

The Islanders headed into the Christmas break with a big 6-5 overtime win against the Nanaimo Buccaneers Dec. 21 at Kerry Park Arena.

“We’re picking it up, gearing towards the playoffs,’’ said Osmond. “We want to try and finish second or third.’’

Braeden Cross scored the winner 2:39 into the second overtime period.

Alex Milligan did most of the damage before that with four goals. His last two markers in the third period had the Islanders up by two goals heading into the final three minutes.

But the Buccaneers tallied twice in the late stages for a tie to force overtime.

Fortunately, Cross made sure all’s well that ended well for the Islanders.

Tylor Branzsen had the other Islanders’ goal, opening the scoring during the first minute of the game.

he Duncan Stingrays knew they’d have to be quick not to get left behind in the Richmond FastSwim.

Twelve Stingrays entered the event at Richmond’s Watermania Pool that featured 480 of the fastest age group swimmers in the province.

Three earned a full slate of personal bests: Laura Kissack, 16; Desirae Ridenour, 13; and Robyn Zinkan, 13.

Percentages for the rest were: Haakon Koyote, 16 (87.5%); Jeremy Kissack, 14 (83%); Megan Lewis, 13 (80%); Savanah VanNieuwkerk, 14 (67%); Olin Dahlstrom, 10 (60%); Jasmin Marston, 15 (60%); Gavin Morrison, 15 (50%); Cailine Keirstead, 11 (33%) and Cecilia Johnson, 15 (20%).

Laura Kissack placed in the top eight of all six of her events. Her highest ranking was fourth in the 800-metre freestyle.

All 12 Stingrays earned at least one spot in the finals. Eleven received a second swim — either top eight or top 16 dependent on the event — at least one time.

Ridenour added her name to the AAA provincial qualifying list in 13 and under for the 100 breast. VanNieuwkerk did the same in the 15 and under 100 breast.

Stingrays’ head coach Leanne Sirup pointed out there’s a new format this year where swimmers must achieve two provincial qualifying standards to actually get to race at the provincials.

Laura Kissack became a Western Canadian Championships qualifier in the 200 fly. It’s the second highest level of swimming in Canada.

“It was very exciting to see our swimmers race amongst the best in the province with our eldest swimmers stepping up their game and the younger swimmers following suit,’’ noted Sirup.

The camaraderie between the oldest and youngest in the group was also significant to her. This was especially evident for Dahlstrom and Keirstead, who are first-timers to this level of competition.

Rosie Lee Rosie Lee has an enthusiasm for swimming that’s infectious. “I always enjoyed swimming when I was little so then my mom always thought it would be good for me because I didn’t really like swimming lessons,’’ said Lee, 16, a Grade 11 student at Cowichan Secondary School. “So I started with Leanne (Sirup) on another team and then came to the Stingrays after that.’’ She’s happy to impart her knowledge on the kids, teaching Stage One of the I Can Swim Program for five- and six-yearolds. “They look up to her a lot,’’ said Stingrays’ teammate and coach Chelsea Langelo. “She’s very bubbly. Everyone loves her.’’ Lee’s own swimming has developed well over the years to provincial AA qualifying level. “She is really quite a versatile and strong swimmer,’’ said Sirup.

“I enjoy backstroke but I think one of my best is I.M. so it’s all four strokes,’’ Lee said. She puts in the time whenever she can spare it.

“I swim five or six days a week,’’ Lee said. “It just depends on my schedule.’’ That schedule has included sessions with the Celtic Rhythm Dancers since the age of two and also candystriping at the hospital.

YOUTH ATHLETES 2013

The 2013 Cowichan Valley Youth Athlete of the Year will be announced next Sunday, Jan. 5. The top 20 contenders will be featured in a special section in the News Leader Pictorial’s Friday, Jan. 3 edition.

In 2012, Maya Munzar and Maegan Kuruvita, pictured, were declared co-winners of the Youth Athlete of the Year award. Munzar,

a triathlete, is now at UVic and wrestler Kuruvita attends Simon Fraser University.

Previous winners included: Lizzie Yates (2011), Patrick Kay (2010), Steven McKinnon and Christine Ridenour (2009), McKinnon (2008), Hana Taiji and Dannie Richards (2007), Marika Posehn (2006), Matt Evans (2005) and Emily Zurrer (2003 and 2004).

fine line definitely separates the top 20 from the next group in the News Leader Pictorial’s 113+ Cowichan Valley Youth Athletes of the Year.

In the third installment of our series, the No. 21 to 50 top highschool aged athletes of 2013 are featured. Many are on the verge of breaking into the top 20 in 2014.

Josh Anderson heads this impressive field of 30 athletes from many different sports. Anderson, a big defenceman, is being heavily-scouted — especially after playing well in the provincial Bantam Tier 1 hockey championships at Cowichan Arena — and was eventually selected third in the Western Hockey League’s Bantam draft by the Prince George Cougars.

Duncan Dynamics Gymnastics Club has two athletes among this elite group, Micaylla Broadway at No. 22 and Hayley Baker at No. 39.

Broadway became the first member of the club to compete in the national championships.

Tyler Beselt, who hails from Shawnigan Lake, is another of the many top Shawnigan Lake School rugby players on the school’s provincial championship squad and is also a B.C. U17 player.

Sara Lowes is just one of those athletes who captures your attention whenever she’s on the field in either field hockey or rugby. Frances Kelsey’s Chelsey Cleemoff continues to make great strides and is very dedicated to her field hockey.

Coach Lorne Winship’s Cowichan Midget A1 Thunder lacrosse team has three players that fall into this category — Tyson Black, Taylor Martin and Colin Winship. Black captained the team and has excellent skills at both ends of the floor while Martin played for the Team B.C. Midgets in the nationals in Ontario and is a pure goal-scorer and Winship provides team leadership and topped the team in scoring at the Midget A1 provincials.

Track and field seems to be producing a steady stream of rising stars and Ben Williams and Casey Heyd are in the mix. Williams qualified for four events at nationals, including three jumping events — and Heyd attained four silver medals at provincials, three firsts for the Island and a third place and fifth place in Canada for sprints.

Zach Diewert of Chemainus Secondary goes to Nanaimo to hone his baseball skills. He’s continuing to develop into one of the top players in his age group in the province.

also becoming a solid volleyball player in coach Jill Fougner’s program as well.

Desirae Ridenour of Frances Kelsey is only in Grade 9, but has already won back-to-back Island girls’ cross country championships against a much older field up to Grade 12. She’s also been in the running at provincials and almost won that event in 2013 as well.

Marina Ellison is a very busy girl and dedicated to both field hockey and figure skating. That’s a tough assignment to be attending school at Frances Kelsey and skating at Fuller Lake, but she manages to pull it off.

Nick McLean of Brentwood College is the No. 1-ranked high school doubles player in B.C., going 10-0 at provincials and claimed the Independent Schools Association boys’ silver medals the last two years.

Caleigh Coels has long played competitive softball but also imparts her enthusiasm on soccer, volleyball and track activities. Her prowess on the ball field has been appreciated by the Victoria Devils for many years, most recently propelling the team to a silver medal at provincials and a national qualifying spot.

The talents of Eric (Wheels) Williams and Kain Melchior are so similar on the football field, we slotted them into the same spot. Both possess dynamite kick-returning abilities.

Becky Bazinet’s passion for sports at Duncan Christian School is infectious. Her first love is basketball, but she also makes an impact in volleyball as well as being a soccer goalie and a chapel leader.

Kim Smith, Krystyna Neal and Maddie Smith are all coming off another great field hockey season with the Cowichan Secondary School senior girls’ team and their efforts propelled the team into the final four at the provincials.

Jordy Frost had his best season by far in baseball, pitching a one-hitter in the semis and also gave up one hit, but picked the runner off first in a 10-0 win during the Lower Island final.

Danielle Groenendijk is continuing a great family sports tradition at DCS. She’s only in Grade 9 but already performing at or near a Grade 12 level in volleyball, especially, and basketball.

Harrison Backer is the only Brentwood student to compete in three varsity sports: rowing, basketball and soccer.
