Merritt home to B.C.’s first baby of 2013: Jan. 3

Bobcat killing spree, 23 chickens dead: Jan. 29

If everything had gone according to schedule, Geraldine and David James would not be the proud parents of the first baby born in B.C. in 2013.

For starters, the first-time parents from Merritt were not supposed to welcome their bundle of joy into the world until Jan. 9, which was the due date doctors gave Geraldine after she found out she was pregnant.

But, things changed and those same doctors decided to have the James go to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops on the weekend for a C-section, given concerns about the baby’s weight.

So, there Geraldine was, with surgery scheduled for 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve — a slot that would have given her one of the last 2012 babies in the province.

The loss of 23 heritage chickens at a local farm is the result of a bobcat encounter on Wednesday morning.

“I heard a ruckus. The dogs were freaking out,” property owner Roslyn Duclos said. “Normally the dogs bark at the back of the property, but they were over by the chicken coop, so I ran. I knew as soon as I turned around.”

The bobcat had killed all but three of Duclos’ chickens, two of which she managed to cordon off in a separate part of the chicken coop, and a rooster, which was in her house at the time. Duclos said she didn’t know how long the bobcat had been in there, but her friend and fellow chicken producer Katie Sanders speculated it probably didn’t take long.

“I would think, the way chickens panic, it would take five minutes to kill them all,” Sanders said.

Some of the chickens were still warm when Duclos and Sanders went in to check on the carnage. Most of the chickens died either from puncture wounds in their heads or from snapped necks.

Woman killed while rescuiwng crash victims: Feb. 7 A West Kelowna woman was struck and killed as she was helping injured passengers in a Coquihalla Highway crash on Sunday.

The deceased woman was the lone passenger in a lumber truck that was involved in the three-vehicle collision at 6:35 p.m. about 35 kilometres north of Hope.

After the initial three-car pileup, the 54-year-old woman attempted to rescue the two elderly occupants of a 2008 Toyota involved in the crash. A Chevrolet then drove onto the scene and rammed the Toyota she was behind. Her 59-year-old husband watched the crash, Fraser Valley Traffic Services reported.

Two 40-year-old Kamloops men also involved in the crash were assisting her in the rescue. They managed to jump out of the way of the oncoming Chevrolet.

The 62-year-old driver of the Chevrolet, a man from West Kelowna, reported the incident to the Hope RCMP and is cooperating, police said. He initially stopped briefly down the road from the accident, but didn’t return to the scene.

Council calls conflict rules too limiting Feb. 28 As municipal public servants throughout B.C. willingly rejig their positions on non-profit organizations, councillors in Merritt are resistant to conflict of interest rules the Appeal Court clarified in January.

Conflict of interest has been a hot topic in B.C. communities since a followup report in January from Municipal Solicitor Colin Stewart of Stewart McDannold Stuart Barristers and Solicitors.

The report is a response to the Court of Appeal decision that ex public servants on Salt Spring Island, Christine Torgrimson and George Ehring, were in conflict when they voted to fund non-profits on which they were members.

The ruling overturns the B.C. Supreme Court decision that defended the councillors’ interests.

The councillors voted to fund $8,000 to two environmental organizations on which they were directors.

Animal rescuer looks Cancer risk occupational hazzard to expel traps: March 7 for firefighters: March 14 Animal traps throughout the region kill several pet dogs each year when their trapped legs lead to slow and painful deaths, says a woman who helps rescue the pooches.

Now, Angel’s Animal Rescue Society’s Judanna Dawn-Caros is taking a stand and hopes others will join her in a petition to end trapping in the area.

“These animals suffer so much before they actually die,” she said. “Trapping is such a cruel method of hunting.”

As the rescue co-ordinator for the society, DawnCaros said the amount of suffering she has seen is “barbaric.”

Last April, residents near a trap heard the cries of a dog that was stuck near Petit Creek before they called Dawn-Caros. She said at the time that the pooch’s leg was likely in the trap for two days before finally being released.

Firefighters were on their feet in a flash to help a boy who fell asleep and crashed out of his chair at the Merritt Civic Centre on Monday night.

“If you had to collapse, what better place than a room full of firefighters?” the boy’s father, presenter Dr. Kenneth Kunz, joked when it was determined he wasn’t hurt.

It turned out to be a brief bit of comic relief during Kunz’s two-hour Communit lecture on the link between firefighting and cancer. A spokesperson for Aspen Planers Ltd. has confirmed the company has purchased the former Ardew Wood Products Mill site.

“We have purchased Ardew,” David Gray said. “We’re sitting post r over web e c ffi o down and reviewing all of our options at this time. There are ic conom challenges. We’ve started reviewing the process, but we don’t have calls out e r lo il c n u Co anything to say at this point.”

The Ardew Mill shut down on January 11 of this year. The shutdown led to 50 lost jobs.

Aspen Planers would not confirm the purchase cost, but Gray said they are thankful to Ardew owner Erik Norgaard.

“We want to give acknowledgement to Erik Norgaard and his father for working hard and working in a very difficult environment,” Gray said.

Jackie Tegart was declared the new MLA for Fraser-Nicola on Tuesday, defeating stalwart New Democrat Harry Lali.

The race between Tegart and Lali was close, with Tegart at about a 600-vote lead when she was declared the riding’s victor at about 9:40 p.m.

The outcome of Fraser-Nicola was indicative of the provincial trend – what some are calling a comeback victory for the Liberals in the province’s 40th election.

Polls throughout the campaign, which kicked off in mid-April, showed the NDP with steady and sometimes hefty leads on the Liberals. However, Global News called a Liberal majority government just after 9:40 p.m.

Some people at Lali’s campaign headquarters on Quilchena Avenue shared in the surprise at the Liberal victory in the riding and throughout the province.

“The provincial numbers fell, and we fell with them,” Lali told a crowd of about 30 people gathered at his campaign headquarters on Quilchena Avenue. “It was a provincial thing. The voter turnout here is low. Our voters stayed at home because everybody thought I was a shoo-in, that the government was a shoo-in. We went down with the wave.”

Colter said winning the tournament, which was held April 29 to May 4 in Kahnawake, Que., was amazing, with the gold medal game against Team Ontario being the highlight.

The TransMountain pipeline may have been slowly leaking for an extended period of time before Kinder Morgan Canada crews found crude oil on the ground.

Hugh Harden, Kinder Morgan Canada’s vice-president of operations, said it’s difficult to say how long oil had been escaping.

“I would say it was a matter of days or weeks rather than months or years,” Harden said. “It was a very, very, very slow leak. It’s almost classified as a weep.”

He said Thursday crews were expected to install a permanent repair sleeve, allowing the line to reopen by Friday evening.

Harden said the leak was found because Kinder Morgan crews arrived to check that section of the pipeline after an in-pipe inspection device flagged it as having a potential defect.

They noticed an oily patch the size of a wagon wheel on Wednesday in the Kingsvale area, about 40 kilometres southwest of Merritt, and called the control centre, which shut down the pipeline.

Sturgis North cancels 2013 Merritt festival: June 25

The Sturgis North Motorcycle and Music Festival has cancelled its 2013 event in Merritt.

The group had planned to hold its festival from August 22 to 25 at the old Merritt Mountain Music Festival grounds, but is now postponing the event until 2014 due to time constraints with the new location, according to the Sturgis North Facebook page.

In May, when Sturgis North announced it would be coming to Merritt, president Joan Hanson told the Herald that festival organizers hoped Merritt’s proximity to the Coast, the site’s festival-ready infrastructure and lower costs would help the company pay off its outstanding debts to its two former sites.

The 2011 inaugural event was held in Salmon Arm, and the 2012 event was held in Vernon. The first year cost about $1.5 million more than organizers expected, which is what prompted the move to Vernon in the first place, Hanson said last month.

Another year, another group of bright-eyed youth have graduated from Merritt Secondary School. The grads gathered at the Nicola Valley arena on Mammette Avenue Friday (June 21) to receive their diplomas.

In total 115 graduates between Merritt Secondary and the Kengard Learning Centre graduated high school.

The night began with the graduates meeting outside MSS for a group photo in their caps and gowns.

MSS Principal Bill Lawrence told the Herald he loves graduation day.

“This is the day we all look for, right? And it’s a day that opens lots of doors for kids,” Lawrence said.

Merritt’s former top cop will not spend any time behind bars for stealing and using cocaine from police evidence lockers.

Former Staff Sgt. Stuart Seib, 54, was given a conditional discharge in a Kelowna courtroom on Tuesday, which means he will not have a criminal record if he does not breach his one-year probation. His sentence also includes 50 hours of community service.

Seib pleaded guilty to breach of trust for the thefts, which occurred while he was stationed in Merritt. In court this spring, he testified that he was self-medicating to cope with post traumatic stress disorder following the 2002 death of a girl who had sought his help for issues at home.

Merritt’s first City of Music weekend concert series is kicking off tomorrow with a parade of musicians from the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

The musicians, who are coming from all across Canada for the inaugural event, will be at the Hall of Fame at 4 p.m. for the free event.

The weekend’s lineup includes Lee Dinwoodie, Dr. Strangelove and Kenny Hess, as well as local performers, including the band Six More Strings and the Snee brothers.

The three-day blues, rock and country music festival was the brainchild of Merritt Desert Inn owner Melvina White in partnership with the Merritt and District Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber of commerce manager Etelka Gillespie said the chamber wanted to get involved because music is important to Merrittonians and a big part of Merritt’s identity.

At a committee meeting of council last Wednesday it was agreed that at the next regular meeting of council on January 8 it will be recommended that the city borrow $1,085,000 instead of $1,185,000.

That figure is made up of $416,500, which the city will borrow, and $688,500, which the city will borrow on behalf of the Thompson-Nicola Regional district (TNRD).

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake shook Merritt Friday night at about 9:26 p.m., and residents around the city and the Nicola Valley could feel it.

The Geological Survey of Canada confirmed the epicentre of the earthquake was located about 20 kilometres north of Merritt. There were no reports of damage, nor would any be expected from an earthquake below a magnitude of 5.

Garry Rogers, an earthquake scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada in Victoria, said the small quake is the result of seismic activity under North America.

He said the continent is drifting gradually westward, rubbing up against the Pacific plate, creating an east-west squeezing effect, which occurs throughout North America.

“It’s more accelerated in British Columbia, this east-west squeezing, that built up the mountains way, way in the past,” Rogers said. “But that east-west squeezing or ‘stress,’ if you like, is still in the crust today, and is the cause of earthquakes that we see in southern British Columbia.”

He said there was nothing unusual about the earthquake and it was a typical quake southern British Columbia experiences every year.

He said small earthquakes like this one are typically only felt locally and occur in the Merritt area about once every five to seven years.

City manager announces resignation: Aug. 29 The City of Merritt has filled its economic development and financial services manager positions, but will soon say goodbye to its chief administrative officer.

Matt Noble’s resignation comes as he moves on to a similar position with the City of Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan.

“I never in my life expected that I’d be going back to that province,” Noble said, referencing his time spent at the City of Swift Current. “It just works out that way, and the opportunity was something I could not say no to. I see it as being a tremendous move, especially at this stage in my career, to practice at the highest level and I’m pretty excited to experience management at that level.”

Noble said the new position will use many of the skills and experience he’s acquired acting as both chief administrative officer and corporate services manager for the City of Merritt.

This will be the biggest city he’s managed, Noble said.

“It’s definitely an upwardly-mobile thing to do,” he said. “It’s a large number of employees and a much, much larger budget. It’s the same position, only much bigger.”

Noble said he expects the move to benefit his family as well as his professional goals.

Noble said all there’s left to do before his last day at the City of Merritt on Sept. 13 is tie up loose ends.

Ribbon cut on $4 million firefighting facility: Sept. 12 The new $4.74million Provincial Wildfire Training Centre and expanded Merritt Fire Zone office officially opened last Thursday.

The new facility has a floor area of 14,300 square feet, space for up to 58 staff, storage areas for equipment and three classrooms to support field training.

Kamloops Fire Centre Manager Steve Schell said seeing the smiling faces of the fire crews who are going into the new stateof-the-art facility after being housed in old trailers at the Nicola Fire Base is a measure of the success of this project.

“It really was a team effort. It wasn’t just one individual or one agency leading this. It was a full team effort pulling all of this together,” Schell said.

Staff in the Merritt Fire Zone respond to an average of 92 wildfires per year, Schell told the audience that gathered for the opening.

The crowd included special guests Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart, Merritt Mayor Susan Roline and Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson.

After touring the new facility, Thomson and Tegart said they were impressed.

“I think it has huge opportunity around other training. The building is impressive, it’s B.C.built and this will do great things for our riding,” Tegart said.

“I think what stood out to me was the way that they have designed the building in order to make sure it really enhances and supports the work of the Wildfire Management Branch — the flow through the building, the capacity in the building and the training capacity that we’re going to have, which, previously, was a little bit truncated in different places,” Thomson said.

Forest Protection Officer Kim Janowsky, a 28-year veteran of the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch, said he’s worked out of trailer facilities his whole career and the opening is a “banner day” for him.

The Nicola Valley Community Arts Council is kicking off its 2013-14 concert series with a performance by Shari Ulrich on Friday.

The B.C.-based singer-songwriter said she’s looking forward to making a reappearance in Merritt after a decade-long absence. Friday’s show was made possible by keeping in touch with members of the arts council for all those years, she said.

“We’ve been trying to find another opportunity ever since,” she said. “The timing was now.”

The Juno-award-winning musician is bringing decades of music along with her, and tunes from a new record.

She’ll also have accordion player Ted Littlemore in tow, which she said adds a new dimension to her performances.

“He’s 22 years old. It’s wonderful to have that multi-generational aspect of it,” she said.

That multi-generational aspect of Ulrich’s career is reflected on her next album, which was produced by her daughter, who’s working on her masters in music at McGill University.

HERALD OPINION Mandela was not a saint

The Catholic Church consecrates saints with less pomp and sentimentality than was lavished on Nelson Mandela during the week-long media orgy we have just been through.

We haven’t seen such a ridiculous spectacle since — oh, since the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy three weeks ago.

But, at least the Kennedy orgy was over a lot faster — and nobody compared him to Mahatma Gandhi or Jesus Christ.

Pity the poor journalists who had to grind out endless stories about what was hardly a news event at all — 95-year-old man dies after lengthy illness — and inevitably ended up sounding like sycophants and fools.

True, the world needed (or at least wanted) a political icon of perfect virtue, but the beatification of Mandela took much too long.

The problem was that everybody in the media knew well in advance Mandela was dying and had time to invest millions in preparing to cover the event.

Hotel rooms and telecom facilities were booked, crews and anchors were deployed and the expense had to be justified by round-the-clock, wall-towall coverage of funeral orations, vox populi interviews and talking heads.

And, of course, all the world’s politicians showed up for the greatest photo-op of the decade, including many who had condemned Mandela as a terrorist before he pulled off a peaceful transition from apartheid to majority rule in South Africa.

But, now that the babble of rhetoric has died down and just before the myth takes over completely, let us talk honestly about who he was and what he accomplished.

a million and a half pictures. We’ve asked a lot of uncomfortable questions, got a lot of uncomfortable answers, written and rewritten ledes, written and rewritten stories, written and rewritten everything.

Sometimes it feels like we’re in two places at once.

It’s amazing to look at everything we’ve created from scratch, from words that float across the air and reach our ears.

Here are some things we’ve got our eyes and ears on for 2014: The distribution of grants-in-aid this budget season; the first Sturgis Canada motorcycle rally and music festival this summer; following the

fundraising for the movie theatre; figuring out how these Liquor Act reforms play out locally; the byelection for a new councillor.

Of course, there are always a host of annual stories we do. Country Christmas is a recent example, and it’s in good company with other long-standing community events, including the Fall Fair and Rodeo. We’ve got a new annual story to add to the roster with the Bass Coast electronic music and art festival, and hopefully the Hands of Hope food drive and an inaugural with Sturgis Canada.

people do remarkable things.

As a nation, we’ve watched Rob Ford flounder, Alberta re-emerge from massive flooding, a train full of oil derail in Quebec with disastrous results, teens kill themselves because of sex-based online bullying, Justin Trudeau take leadership of the federal Liberals and a Canadian command the International Space Station, and make us proud.

Over the last year, we’ve also received our fair share of criticism, and some not so fair.

Nonsense emails and rambling phone calls aside, we’ve also received some accolades and some simple thankyous.

This industry is not an easy one and it’s nice to hear that people appreciate the hard work and long hours we put in. It’s also vital for our sanity to counteract the insults and rude insinuations occasionally hurled our way.

That’s the lesson I learned in 2013: never underestimate the power of simple gratitude.

It’s one I’ll take forward with me into 2014 and beyond.

Boxing Week needs improvement Dear editor, To the merchants of Merritt: You all advertise Boxing Week sales, but many of the products

purchase are all gone within the first hour of you opening your doors on Boxing Day. If it is supposed to be a week-long sale then bring in enough product so people

your customers want, you only have a limited amount of.

So my question is why call it a Boxing Week sale if the items your would-be customers would like to

Mandela had flaws, but right for the job It would have got plenty of exercise as he watched local politicos and foreign dignitaries strew metaphorical flowers on his grave.

The man they buried at Qunu on Sunday, Dec. 15, was arrested by the white minority regime in 1963, probably on a tip from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

At the time, he was the head of the African National Congress’s (ANC) military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), and continued to back its campaign of sabotage, bombing and attacks on military and police targets

If the South African Communist Party is to be believed, Mandela was a member of its central committee at the time of his arrest.

It was a different time, when U.S. President Ronald Reagan could declare the apartheid regime was “essential to the Free World” and the ANC’s main international supporters were the Soviet Union and Cuba.

Mandela might have ended up as a man of violence had he not gone to prison.

Instead, in prison, he had the time to develop his ideas about recon-

dent and, frankly, he wasn’t very good at it.

He had no executive experience, nor much aptitude for it.

Thabo Mbeki did most of the hard administrative work behind the scenes during Mandela’s presidency (1994 to 1999), while Mandela greeted visiting celebrities, hobnobbed with the rich and famous and solicited donations for various causes that included, unfortunately, his own extensive family.

He was not personally corrupt, but he was involved in a few dubious deals — and he tolerated corruption in others.

However, Mandela

did his country one last big favour — he retired at the end of his first term rather than cling to power.

He was already 81 years old at that time, but lesser men (Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, for instance) have not let that stop them.

He even had a few good years left to enjoy his family before age began to drag him down.

Mandela was not a saint.

He was just a man.

But, he was the right man at the right time.

Council considers Feb. 22 Halloween house collecting byelection: Oct. 24 for foodbank: Oct. 31 The city could hold a byelection for one city councillor as early as Feb. 22, 2014.

At the regular city council meeting on Tuesday night, council discussed a memo from City of Merritt Deputy Clerk and Human Resources Manager Carole Fraser that outlined potential key dates for the byelection.

The suggested nomination period begins on Jan. 7, 2014 at 9 a.m. and ends on Jan. 17 at 4 p.m. Advance voting would take place on Feb. 12 and 19, with general voting on Feb. 22. General voting will likely take place in the community room at city hall as the Rotary Club of Merritt Sunrise mini-golf tournament is scheduled to take place at the Civic Centre that day.

The memo also recommends authorizing the automated voting machines that the city has used since 2008.

Fraser told the Herald while it’s possible those dates could change, it’s unlikely because of the meticulous timing a byelection and its procedures must abide by under the Local Government Act. Violating any of the restrictions around timing would mean the whole process would be thrown out, wasting time and tax dollars, Fraser said.

As you approach 1920 Hill St., you’re more likely to hear raucous laughter than screams.

But tonight, it’ll be a rock of horrors as the full effect of Halloween takes over at one of Merritt’s most elaborately decorated yards.

Sisters Terina Price and Val Cox spent the better part of the last two weeks preparing for Halloween with an elaborate display on their mother’s lawn.

“We’re all Halloween people,” their mother, Susie Dufault, laughed.

This year, the goal isn’t just to give trick or treaters and their parents a thrill. The family is using the attention and high foot traffic the house gets to solicit donations for the food bank.

If you can make it through the scary display all the way up to the house, you’ll find a bin set up on the front step with a sign for the food bank.

The sisters said people who might be in need of more than just fun-sized chocolate bars can take from the nonperishables as needed, and the rest will go to the Nicola Valley and District Food Bank.

New food drive to get festive: Nov. 7

Royal LePage Merritt and the Merritt Centennials are coming together for what they’re hoping will be “the biggest food drive Merritt has ever seen.”

The plan is to send out a fleet of pickup trucks strung with Christmas lights and playing festive music on the Dec. 1 collection day. Each truck will have a team of four or five people walking alongside it to collect food from the houses along the street, Royal LePage owner and food drive organizer Claudette Edenoste said.

Each group will also have a Centennials player on board.

A group of concerned Merrittonians will be heading out to the Stump Lake Ranch in an effort to search for a Merritt man who went missing last month.

The group will be meeting on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Tim Hortons and will head to the ranch where 44-year-old Dean Morrison was last seen.

Tammy Caruso, a former colleague of Morrison’s when the pair worked at the Merritt News, is leading the initiative.

Caruso said she wants to help Morrison’s son find his father.

From that, Caruso started a public Facebook group titled Foot Search for Dean Morrison and as of Wednesday, 27 people had posted as attending the search.

Caruso said the idea to organize the search came about after someone suggested on a Facebook group that community members do a ground search.

She said people have posted that they will be bringing people with them so they may likely have over 30 people in the search.

December City won’t rezone for asphalt plant: Dec. 3 Two motions to amend the Official Community Plan and a rezoning bylaw on a piece of property at Midday Valley Road and Houston Street died at the regular council meeting last Tuesday.

Essentially, they met the same fate as a defeated or abandoned motion.

The decisions came after a public hearing on the controversial rezoning application filed by Pentictonbased asphalt producer Peter’s Bros. If the company wants to build a plant and aggregate storage site in Merritt in the future, it will have to start the application process over again.

The motions died for lack of a second, meaning they didn’t make it to the table for council to discuss and vote on them. Coun. Goetz made both motions and both died for lack of a second on a council that was short two members.

Sturgis Canada music, motorcycle fest sets dates: Dec. 20 The Sturgis Canada Motorcycle Rally and Music Festival is scheduled for August 2014 after postponing its inaugural Merritt event.

The festival was supposed to take place last August, but organizers postponed the three-day event because of time constraints, they said.

The 2014 event is scheduled for Aug. 21-24, and will be the first year under the new name.

It was formerly Sturgis North, but organizers decided to change the name after reconfiguring things behind the scenes.

Summer Shaw, a media representative with the festival, called it a “complete overhaul.”

“As you put the festival on, you come across challenges and learn along the way. They just wanted to take a year off and regroup and really strengthen it,” Shaw said.
