Health science union members have voted 75 per cent to accept a five-year “growth sharing” wage agreement with the B.C. government. First to accept the groundbreaking proposal are 16,000 specialists in diagnostic, clinical and rehabilitation services. A larger group of government union members is also voting on a similar offer. The agreements include guaranteed wage increases of about 5.5 per cent over five years, plus extra money in years where the B.C. economy grows beyond independent forecasts.
“
...I expect we will see that pattern continue with subsequent agreements,”
Mike de Jong, Finance Minister
They are also for an unusually long term and have been reached three months before the current contracts expire. Val Avery, president of the Health Sciences Association, said the “modest wage increases” were in addition to employer commitments to recruiting and retaining professionals in highest demand. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the
health science agreement is “unique to the needs of the employers and employees, and I expect we will see that pattern continue with subsequent agreements.” A similar five-year proposal has gone to a vote of 51,000 mainly B.C. Government Employees’ Union members. They include direct government employees, home sup-
port workers, alcohol and drug counsellors, adult day centres, child development centres and mental health group homes. The growth sharing formula is based on the finance ministry’s economic forecast council, private sector experts who estimate growth in January as the provincial budget is being prepared. If actual growth exceeds projected growth by one per cent, it means $200 million more for the provincial treasury, which would be shared 50-50 with unionized employees for that year.

RBC Foundation and local branch donate for Starlite Submitted

The Royal Stewart Highland Dancers, under the direction and instruction of Jane Stewart Nixon, hosted their annual Christmas Recital on December 20, 2013, at the beautiful Royal Alexandra Hall. The Canadian Museum of Rail Travel provided a beautiful backdrop to the festive spirit of the Highland Dancers. The recital raised almost $500 for the Cranbrook Salvation Army. (Pictured) Isabella Savage performing.
EKFH Executive Director Donna Grainger had the chance to join in a get together with managers and staff at the RBC Cranbrook branch this morning. While there Grainger also had the opportunity to personally thank the RBC Foundation, the local branch and all the individuals who work for RBC for making a difference in the lives of others. Last week the financial institution continued its support of EKFH with a gift of $10,000 for the 2013 Starlite Campaign. “The Starlite Campaign is a very rewarding part of the work done by the foundation but none of it would be possible without the generosity of organizations and people like at RBC,” explains Grainger. The RBC Foundation and branches in Cranbrook and Creston have been working with the regional hospital foundation for more than a decade. During that time over $150,000 has been dedicated to

gift will light stars #14 and #15 along the roofline of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. RBC’s decision to support the foundation’s general unrestricted fund also gives the foundation’s board of directors the ability to determine and dedicate funds to areas of greatest need with a focus on community health initiatives. This may include smaller essential equipment items that benefit
wound care, falls prevention, patient monitoring and other vitally important community focused programming. The Starlite Campaign and its beautiful stars is the largest annual fundraising effort by EKFH. Funds that are donated through Starlite are stewarded by EKFH for funding medical equipment, patient comforts or educational needs for hospitals and health care facilities in the East Kootenay.
Thanks to charitable corporate giving, the RBC Foundation and its Cranbrook branch are to be commended for its ongoing commitment to the quality of care residents living in the region. The 2013 Starlite Campaign fundraising goal is $150,000; if you wish to make a gift to support health care in your community visit www.ekfh.ca.

CleanseSMART is an advanced cleansing and detoxification program. This two-part cleanse is also designed to stimulate the body’s seven channels of elimination but it is 4-5 times stronger than First Cleanse and more effective at eliminating constipation and improving bowel function. Part 1 contains herbs that help eliminate toxins from the organs, tissues, and blood stream. Part 2 works to enhance elimination from the colon by using magnesium hydroxide to hydrate the colon. Herbs such as cape aloe, rhubarb, and triphala work to stimulate peristalsis, which is the colon’s natural action of pushing out material.

A hopeless wish list for 2014 by Tom Fletcher Here are a few things I’d like to see in B.C. political life in the coming year, but won’t. • An orderly schedule of legislature sittings, one in the spring and one in the fall. I canvassed this topic with Premier Christy Clark in our year-end interview, and got the usual runaround about how it’s always been optional since old Gordon what’s-hisname set the schedule of sittings and elections more than a decade ago. Spring is for the budget and MLAs sit in the fall if they need to discuss legislation. They need to all right, but what governments want to do is ram it through as fast as they can, so that’s what they do. The last couple of years of this have been a sham worthy of a South American banana republic, with three chambers running simultaneously and opposition members trying to prepare as they run down the hallways. It leads to mistakes in new laws and adds to the public’s cynicism about the whole business, but it gets things done with minimum exposure of the government to criticism. Stephen Harper would approve. • A political debate about real issues, rather than just a competition to score points in an endless election campaign. I appreciate that this is hopelessly naive, but setting aside enough time to consider issues could, at least in theory, lead to that happen-

ing occasionally. Certainly the hastily staged mock combat of our legislature today isn’t winning new friends for any political party. The main growth area today is people who have given up on the whole thing. • An opposition with ideas. The B.C. NDP will have another leadership contest in 2014, and they’d better bring more modern policy to the table than they had in the last one. Remember the big issues in that pillowfight? Me neither. I had to look them up. Health care? Local organic carrots into the hospital food. Forest industry? A job protection commissar to force the mills to stay open. Resource development? They’re for it, unless you’re against it. These guys need a Tony Blair-type makeover. They need to be for something, and they need to leave the past behind. • Media that care about more than conflict. News organizations are in bad shape these days, and the competition for a rapidly fragmenting audience is having some ugly effects. One thing that needs to go is obsessive coverage of who’s winning and who’s losing. If the news media are going to be interested mainly in the gaffes and gotcha moments, is it any surprise that’s what politicians try to provide? The Canada Post announcement that it has to wind up home delivery offers a recent example. Is it really so
Tamara L’Hoost
mArKEtiNG CoNsULtANt
outrageous for the CEO to suggest that walking to the corner is good exercise? When there’s a 24-hour news cycle to fill, it’s a scandal! How many people know that Canada Post’s unfunded pension liabilities amount to $6.5 billion, as it continues to pay a dwindling workforce to hand out mostly advertising flyers? Should they just keep doing that until they run out of cash? Are taxpayers really expected to maintain another twotier service that’s only available to selected urban people? • Facts to go with opinions. Whether it’s the government’s fantasy figures on job creation or the opposition’s arithmetic-challenged child poverty claims, serious problems can’t be understood, much less solved, without defining them accurately. Submitting government advertising to scrutiny by the Auditor General to make sure it is accurate and nonpartisan would be a good place to start.

Province releases grizzly bear numbers Submitted A study of grizzly bear populations released today provides further insight into populations in British Columbia, while confirming that provincial wildlife biologists continue to refine estimates with the best available science to ensure harvest levels are sustainable. The peer-reviewed study, entitled “Predicting grizzly bear density in western North America” is co-authored by two provincial wildlife biologists and is published in the science journal, PLOS ONE. The predictions are based on a model that generated population estimates for all areas of B.C. The model does not suggest any change in grizzly bear numbers, but does provide improved information and increased understanding about factors influencing grizzly bear density. The model predicted a population of 13,131 bears. This prediction is one factor considered in estimating populations. Other data sources include field inventory work using DNA sampling (typically gathered via grizzly bear hair recovered at bait sites). Taken together, these data sources helped inform the most recent provincial grizzly bear population of approximately 15,000 bears. While the study is only being published today, ministry wildlife biologists used predictions in the model alongside other available data when making grizzly bear management decisions in 2012 and 2013. In those areas where the combined result showed harvest rates higher than policy recommends, hunting opportunities were reduced. Grizzly bear harvest rates in British Columbia are set conservatively and well below what the population can sustain. The study provides insights into grizzly bear habitat and population. Some of the model’s findings suggest: • Grizzly bears are more abundant in nonforested areas probably because the plants that they eat are more likely to grow in open environments. • Confirmation of earlier studies that showed greater salmon availability leads to larger
www.kootenayadvertiser.com A7
numbers of grizzly bears. • Grizzly bear density is lower where black bears are present. • The North Cascades,
an area where grizzly bears have been largely absent for many decades, could support several hundred grizzly bears both north and
south of the CanadaUSA border. • The number of bears killed by people was not related to population density which suggests
2
that current levels of mortality do not measurably reduce population size. • There is a lower density of bears in areas
with high human density and in flat areas with low rainfall.

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),
which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the
power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The
V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.
The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 4-cylinder with 185hp or 3.5L V6 with 278hp Fill-up: 7.8L/5.7L/100km (city/highway 4-cylinder) Sticker price: $26,400-$35,500

Subaru Forester 2009 to 2012:

This reliable Subaru Forester is a very impressive blend of utility, comfort, handling and fuel efficiency in a compact package.

or dimensions of this popular compact utility vehicle. A “Boxer” type engine, with horizontally opposed cylinders (like a Porsche engine), and a symmetrical all-wheeldrive system distinguish a Subaru, as a Subaru. Forester has an excellent history of mechanical dependability and the Subaru essentials are packaged with a practical, utilitarian body. Compared to the previous generation Forester, the ’09 came with a new chassis with a wider track and a longer wheelbase (by 9 cm), plus a new double wishbone rear suspension. The structural changes also yielded extra cargo space and more rear passenger head and legroom. The single overhead camshaft base engine can produce 170-horsepower and fuel economy is rated at 10.6/7.5 L/100 km (city/ highway). While reliable, it’s no rocket and flat-out acceleration to 100 km/hour takes see Forester page B4

more than 10 seconds. Agile handling does help compensate for tame straight-line speed. A turbocharged variant has twin-camshafts and can produce 224-horsepower. However, it likes premium fuel and consumes 10.9/8.3 L/100 km (city/highway). Manual transmission models have an electronic “hill holder” feature. When stopped on an incline this feature delays release of the foot brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward and gives the driver more time to achieve a smooth take-off. The automatic option was a conventional fourspeed. Forester got top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in its rollover test. The roof is more than double the strength required by U.S. federal safety standards. In addition to all-wheeldrive system, a Forester comes with anti-lock brakes and an electronic stability control system called Vehicle Dynamics Control. It also provides what Subaru describes as a ‘virtual’ limited slip rear differential function. The 2009 Forester was offered in four trim levels; 2.5X, 2.5X Touring Package, 2.5X Limited and a 2.5XT Limited
model with a turbocharged engine. Even a base Forester 2.5X comes well equipped with heated seats, air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, roof rails, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls. A new PZEV (partial-zeroemissions-vehicle) edition of Forester was added for the 2010 model year. Emissions are about 90 per cent lower than most (2010) vehicles, according to Subaru. In 2011, the base 2.5-litre boxer engine got a double overhead camshaft upgrade, plus new bore and stroke dimensions. While maximum output remained at about the same level, more power is available at a lower rpm and fuel economy improved. Other than a new height-adjustable front passenger seat no significant changes were made in 2012. The reliable Subaru Forester is a very impressive blend of utility, comfort, handling and fuel efficiency in a compact package. While Forester has a loyal following, Subaru’s smaller dealer network may be an issue, depending where you live, and used resale values are typically higher than average.

John Mindek January 5, 1927 – December 15, 2013 In the early evening hours on Sunday, December 15, 2013, John Mindek passed quietly in his own home in Elko, BC. John Mindek was born in the small village of Sambron Czechoslovakia in 1927. At the age of 5, he and his mother joined his father in Canada. If not for his father not liking the taste of the water, they may have stayed on a sheep ranch on the prairies. Instead, they came to Fernie, BC. After a short while, the family moved to Michel/Natal where his father found work as a coal miner. Sadly, his mother died when he was 11 years old. John spent his adolescent years in Michel/Natal where he developed an intense love of hunting and fishing in the Elk Valley. It was during this time that he became attracted to hunting in the Elko area … an attraction that would later define his life. After completing high school, John furthered his education to become a teacher. One of his first teaching jobs was to open a new school at Cinema, BC. Though he only spent one year in the Cariboo, to listen to his fond stories of that time, one would have thought he spent most of his life there. His former students in the Elk Valley confirmed this by giving him the nickname “Cariboo”. Finally, after leaving teaching and trying other occupations, in 1958 he had the opportunity to purchase a business in Elko. He became attracted to the area while hunting there as a young man and jumped at the opportunity to make Elko his home. Here, he struggled to raise a family and to build a thriving business that continues on. He will be missed. Respecting his final wishes, there will be no memorial services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Society, c/o PO Box 670. Fernie, BC, V0B 1M0. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.cherishedmemoriesfs.com. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
