Joke of the Week: A guy walked into a bar and ordered a drink, then leaned over to the guy next to him and asked, “Want to hear an accountant joke?” The guy next to him replied, “Well, before you tell that joke, you should know that I’m 6 feet tall, 190 pounds, and I’m an accountant. And the guy sitting next to me is 6’2” tall, 210 pounds, and he’s also an accountant. Now, do you still want to tell that joke?” The first guy laughs, “No, I don’t want to have to explain it two times.”

Cooking number-one cause of fire Kitchen: Careless cooking is the number one cause of residential fires. Never leave cooking unattended. • It’s wise to have a fire extinguisher near the kitchen. Keep it 10 feet away from the stove on the exit side of the kitchen. • Never pour water on a grease fire; turn off the stove and cover the pan with a lid, or close the oven door. • Keep pot handles on the stove pointing to the back, and always watch young children in the kitchen.

• Don’t store items on the stove top, as they could catch fire. • Keep kitchen appliances clean and in good condition, and turn them off and disconnect them when not in use. • Don’t overload kitchen electrical outlets and don’t use appliances with frayed or cracked wires. • Wear tight-fitting clothing when you cook. Here’s why: An electrical coil on the stove reaches a temperature of 800 degrees. A gas flame goes over 1,000 degrees. Your dish towel or pot holder can

Please don’t donate junk Submitted

The volunteers of the Westbridge Thrift Shop have been overwhelmed by donations these last few months. Being thankful is one thing but being frustrated and angry is another. We are a non-profit organization. We are fundraising to keep our community hall alive. Thanks to every one of you who donates to the purpose. But SHAME on you who send broken, dirty, useless items our way. Lately our volunteers are sending more items to the dump than putting on our shelves for sale. If it is broken, chipped, stained ...Please do not send it to us take it to the

landfill. How can we say it? Thanks but no thanks. Some might think they are doing good by donating items but if it is junk please do not give it to us. The shop will be having a storewide sale with 50 per cent off all items Dec. 27 and 28. We will be CLOSED  the first two weeks of January, reopening on Jan. 17 with a lot of new stock. We are again saying PLEASE be aware of the condition of your after Christmas donations. If you would not buy it yourself due to conditions do not donate it to us.

Petititon process guide ready British Columbia is known for the unique beauty of its diverse landscape and wildlife. Like Canadians across the country, residents of British Columbia are proud of their natural heritage and are increasingly concerned with protecting it. To help Canadians get answers to their environmental questions and concerns, Parliament introduced the environmental petitions process in 1995. The Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development administers the process on behalf of the Auditor General of Canada.

The process is a simple one, which allows residents of Canada to pose questions to ministers of federal departments and agencies about environmental and sustainable development matters that fall within federal jurisdiction. Ministers are required to reply in writing to the petitioner within 120 days. With the petitioner’s consent, the Commissioner posts both the petition and the ministerial reply on the website of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. This helps increase public awareness of the issues that have been raised as well as the government’s re-

sponse. Environmental petitions to date have covered a diverse range of issues affecting British Columbians such as oil tankers on the west coast, salmon farming, wild fisheries, air and water pollution, hydraulic fracturing (fracking), toxic substances and climate change. To help petitioners navigate the process, the Commissioner has prepared a guide, called “Getting Answers”. For more information on the environmental petitions process, contact the Office of the Auditor General at 1888-761-5953 (ext. 2923) or petitions@oag-bvg.gc.ca.

Boundary musician releases new CD Submitted

Well-known local musician Vanya Popov—aka “Johnny” Popoff—is releasing a new recording: Vignettes. Born and raised in Grand Forks, Popoff displayed a musical gift yet as a toddler, improvising original melodies “by ear” on a toy keyboard, and “arranging” songs he’d heard or sung within his native Doukhobor culture. He later studied music extensively, graduating with honours at the conservatory, college and university levels. In between, he’s played in various bands and sung in, formed and directed several choirs. In 2001, Vanya released his debut solo piano album, Soul Sketches, which sold out two pressings. Several informal recordings of Vanya’s music followed, as well as numerous choir CDs. A DIVISION OF BLACK PRESS – PRINTED EVERY THURSDAY. Mailing address: Box 99, Greenwood, B.C. V0H 1J0 Street address: 318 South Copper Avenue, Greenwood, B.C.

The year that was Though this issue hits the streets on Christmas Eve, it will be the last of 2013. That means it’s time for the New Year’s piece in this slot. It’s been a year of change for many of us in the Boundary. Some of those changes came out of the blue. For instance, at this time last year the BC NDP was thought by nearly everyone in the province to be a shoe-in to form the government in May. One of the biggest stories of the year was a trip by high school students and staff to Vancouver on Sept. 19 to attend the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Fostering Reconciliation through Education Day that was held at the Pacific Coliseum and PNE grounds. The students came telling of something that had long been a shameful Canadian secret of how young children were taken from their families and forced to attend residential schools. This went on generation upon generation for over 120 years. Language and culture were lost. These institutions endeavored to “civilize” Native children through Christian teachings; forced separation from family, language, and culture; and strict discipline. Bev Sellars is chief of the Xatsu’ll (Soda Creek) First Nation in Williams Lake, British Columbia. She holds a degree in history from the University of Victoria and a law degree from the University of British Columbia. She has served as an advisor to the British Columbia Treaty Commission. Sellars broke her silence about the residential schools with her book They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School. The book should be required reading in history classes in all Canadian schools.

As the year comes to a close we at the Boundary Creek Times wish all of our readers and advertisers a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2014! Clockwise from left: Publisher Chuck Bennett, Reporter Pat Kelly, Sales and almost everything else Dyan Stoochnoff.

Smith should recluse himself Editor, The Times: How we come to these moments in local political history… On the one hand we have a member of our honourable Grand Forks city council declaring in a public forum on the night of Dec. 5: “If glyphosate shows up in your urine, it is certainly an indication your body is processing it adequately.” Absolutely brilliant on the part of Coun. Gary Smith! Be it said glyphosate is the active ingredient in the Monsanto antibiotic Round-Up. On the other hand we have our local MLA Linda Larson as per an Oliver Chronicle article of Dec. 11 declaring to the Osoyoos tourist town mayor Stu Wells: “I’m a firm believer in the B.C. beef industry. I think the value of a ranch with a whole bunch of cattle is greater that that of four tourists.” She did not specify if that was four tourists for every cow, however. In the case of the former, we need remind ourselves Mr. Smith votes on any manner of public health concern at City Hall. As per his own affirmation he has a pecuniary interest

in the application of antibiotic herbicides and pesticides in and around this community. Some of these are closely related or tied into Monsanto et al. genetic engineering programs. As a long-time and very interested member of this community in such matters, I recommend Mr. Smith recluse himself forthwith from any further discussion or vote at City Hall pertaining to genetic engineering (GE) or antibiotic applications (herbicide/pesticide) to the landscape. Ms. Larson, on the other hand, needs be reminded her constituency goes beyond the few South-Okanagan ranchers opposing a national park in our region where the unemployment rate tops eight per cent. She is not serving the interests of the constituency by stonewalling the land-use negotiations required to resolve the rancher issues with Parks Canada and the Okanagan First Nations. She has overlooked the fact a South-Okanagan national park would be an undreamt of attention and economic generator for the Boundary region…or does she not consider us part of her riding? Donald Pharand, Grand Forks

Forest industry wins award Editor, The Times: Employee safety is a priority for B.C. forest companies and it is why the industry acted quickly to improve wood dust management following two tragic sawmill explosions last year. Forestry CEOs immediately established a task force to lead an industry-wide response to better understand and manage combustible wood dust. Companies shared safety resources, best practices and created a voluntary standard for wood dust management. Cleanup protocols were enhanced and strategies were developed for equipment and training to ensure every mill could be even safer.   On Dec. 2, the Forest Products Manufacturers Advisory Group— whose members represent about 65 per cent of B.C.’s lumber production— were recognized for these collaborative efforts to improve safety and received the BC Safety Authority’s Lieutenant Governor Safety Award for Excellence in Systems Safety. The award recognizes the ongoing and exceptional industry collaboration to control wood dust. Effective and sustainable wood dust management is a process of continuous improvement and industry collaboration: competitors shared

information about equipment setups, research and best practices for dust management. The task force also sponsored independent scientific research to inform all of their strategies, protocols and approaches to address challenges related to the fine dust of dry, dead mountain pine beetle wood that is processed in B.C.’s interior mills today. Last July, the Manufacturers Advisory Group, with the assistance of insurance companies, released the Wood Dust Mitigation and Control Audit. The auditable standard can be used by companies of all sizes to provide independent assurance that their mills are safe. It is freely available from the WorkSafe BC website Sawmills Industry Resources page. The Manufacturers Advisory Group member companies are committed to utilizing this audit in their facilities beginning next year. While the BC Safety Council’s Safety Award for Excellence in Systems Safety acknowledges the progress and achievements to date, B.C.’s forest companies remain committed to working together to ensure sustainable solutions are in place to manage dust and keep our mills safe today, tomorrow and into the future.  James Gorman, President and CEO of the Council of Forest Industries

Road a ‘dumping ground’ AL DONNELLY

Chronicles of Boundary Country from the pages of the Boundary Creek Times Volume IV, No.6 – April 16, 1898 ➤ The City Scavenger – “Complaints have been made to this newspaper office that the road leading from Greenwood to Deadwood and Copper Camps is being littered with cans, bottles and garbage by the City Scavenger. However, he states that he hauled no garbage over the Deadwood Camp road this year. This may be true but the road itself bears strongly unpleasant testimony to the fact that it has been a dumping ground for refuse from the city. The provincial police ought to inquire into the matter.” ➤ Columbia & Western Railway – “A bill has been introduced in Ottawa to enable the Columbia & Western Railway Co. to lease their line from Robson southwestward through the Boundary Creek country to the Canadian Pacific Railway. This will be a continuance of the Columbia & Kootenay Railway which connects with the Crow’s Nest Railway at Nelson. The new line will commence at Robson, following the Columbia River for a distance, then strike across country to Christina Lake, to

BLASTS FROM THE PAST

Grand Forks, to Midway through the Boundary Creek country and on to Penticton, a distance altogether of about 200 miles.” ➤ Police Inspector Mountain – “The government has placed all the provincial police officers under the control of inspectors. The Inspector for Yale and Kootenay is R.F. Mountain. While some of the provincial police officers should be under the control of an inspector, it strikes us forcibly that too much money is being spent in the payment of officials whose duty it is to take care of other officials who ought to be able to take care of themselves. The provincial officers in this district are sensible fellows that have always performed their duties well and we think the public would take chances on them without the additional protection of a provincial inspector.”

➤ New Windsor Hotel – “The proprietors of the Windsor have decided to build a three-storey hotel on the ground now occupied by the present hotel. A contract has been given for removing the Windsor to the rear of the lot, to make way for the new building.” (ed. This new structure was destroyed by fire just a year later and was rebuilt, standing today on Copper Street as the Greenwood Inn Hotel.) ➤ Rendell & Co. Advertisement – Rendell’s general store was advertising their “fine lines of Fancy Groceries”, including: “Heinz’s Evaporated HorseRadish; French Moutarde de Bordeaux; Ocean Brand Condensed Vegetables; Wethey’s Condensed Mincemeat; Morton’s Raspberry Vinegar; and Boulter’s Refugee Beans.” ➤ CPR Trains not to stop at Grand Forks or Greenwood – The Times reprinted the following statement which appeared in the Grand Forks Miner newspaper: “...neither Grand Forks or Greenwood will be favored with a C.P.R. depot, but that the company will run right through the business part of the towns without stopping. “Any town ought to feel proud to have the C.P.R. pass through it, even if it doesn’t stop.”

Some advice regarding advice From the Back Pew ”Just saying”, by the sometimes irreverent Ed Brouwer. No claims of absolute originality are made for this material. As one man said, “I milk a lot of cows, but I churn my own butter.”

At times I feel the the word “advice” if looked up in the Dictionary should be followed with (see “minefield”) Taking advice from others and applying it indiscriminately to your life is like walking into a minefield: one wrong step and it can blow up in your face. What works in one person’s life isn’t necessarily the best formula for another. Who could possibly know enough about the complex dynamics of any relationship let alone the mother of all relationships, marriage to offer unaskedfor advice and expect it to be useful?

If you seek advice, seek it only from people whose judgment you trust. I have also found that the more adamant people are in giving advice, the less valuable their advice is likely to be. Their advice may not be rooted in an understanding of your particular situation. Humans are fallible, and even the best-intentioned advice can still be bad advice. There’s no doubt that we sometimes need a sounding board or a sympathetic ear when we run into rough spots on the relationship highway, and you should treasure those few friends

whom you can trust to listen carefully. Perhaps the most valuable thing they can do for you is to help you choose your own course of action. I’ve discovered that most of the time, the solution to a problem lies somewhere within our relationship, and the best advisor is the person who helps me bring it to light. And that’s my advice to you. James 3:17-18 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. Please join us at Sidley Mountain Cowboy Church 6 p.m,. the second and fourth Sunday nights of the month. We are meeting at the Bridesville Hall.

Keep healthy eating on track It’s soon a new year and you’ve made a pact to eat MIDWAY healthy. So often, a month later you lose steam. So, what can you do to get back on track? First of all, it’s important to approach healthy eating in a realistic manner. Restricting foods, labeling foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and not eating enough food can wreak havoc on your body – emotionally and physically. It can lead to feelings of deprivation, overeating, and a resounding amount of guilt that can lead you back to square one. Instead, focus on small changes, healthy foods that you enjoy, and take the time to create a support system to help maintain lifelong healthy eating habits. Three tips to stay on track with

healthy eating: Be Realistic. Trying to tackle too much at once can be overwhelming. Big things happen when small, sustainable changes are repeated over a lifetime. By including a fruit at breakfast or an extra vegetable at dinner, you can achieve large goals over time. Choose actions that are relatively easy to fit into your day on an ongoing basis. Focus on the Positive. All too often, resolutions can leave you feeling deprived. Try reframing your resolutions to focus on things you will enjoy. Rather than restricting your favorite foods, try incorporating healthier foods that you enjoy more often and have fun trying some new foods too. Getting a new cook-

LIBRARY LIVING WELL REPORT

book might serve as a special reward for yourself as well as an inspiration. Find Support. Don’t try to do it alone! Talk to your friends and family about the changes you’d like to make. You may be surprised to learn that others want to join you as you strive to make healthier choices at home, work, school and play. Invite family members to plan a weekly menu together so that everyone feels part of the changes. HUGS S and G U L S

STAY ALERT PULL OVER. Please Yield the Right of Way to Emergency Vehicles A message from the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund

www.jpmf.ca/trafficsafety

Huge Hugs: To my mom Della Wilson for going out of her way to make this the best Christmas possible for me. From Tammi Wilson. Hugs: To all the volunteers who come through each year to organize community Christmas dinner in Greenwood and Midway. Hugs: To Rudolph for taking the lead every year. Hugs: To the kids who put on Christmas concerts at the schools this year. These shows are actually for the parents who come to watch and enjoy—the kids make our Christmas all that much merrier. If you have a hug or a slug, we’d like to hear it. We will print the anonymous submissions for all to see. Be honest, but all we ask is that you keep it tasteful. Editor’s discretion will always be exercised. Simply email bctimesnews@shaw.ca with your short quips, compliments or complaints; or you may drop them off at 318 South Copper Street in Greenwood.
