A legacy of nurturing children will continue.

The Vernon School District has officially sold the former West Vernon school to the North Okanagan Child Care Society.

“We’re very excited. What a great Christmas present,” said Rebekka Lindskoog, NOCCS chairperson.

West Vernon school was closed by the district in 2007 because of low enrolment.

NOCCS began renting the space in 2007 on a year-to-year lease and purchase negotiations began in 2009.

“It (purchase) means security for our staff and our members,” said Lindskoog.

“It will be a long-term home. We’ve never had a long-term home before.”

“It is gratifying to know that the school will continue to provide the community with

a much-needed service and will also meet the needs of its children, but in a different capacity,” said Bill Turanski, school district chairperson.

NOCCS provides an array of programs to 267 children between the ages of nine months and 12 years, and there are 90 children on the waitlist.

“We’re the third largest child care society in Canada and the largest in the Okanagan,” said Lindskoog.

Space will be rented out to tenants that complement the society’s services.

“We really can become a community centre,” said Lindskoog.

The school district’s VLearn program will remain at West Vernon for two years.

The property sale has provided the school district with $1.4 million, but it cannot be used for operations such as staffing levels.

“It has to be used for capital, any kind of building improvements (under provincial rules),” said Joe Rogers, district superintendent.

The run before, former Vernon freestyle skier and coach Mike Shaw nailed the Nutbutter 720.

Shaw, 26, was demonstrating the technical trick on Dec. 16 at the Keystone Ski Resort near Denver to his group from Calgary’s WinSport Academy, where he has spent the last two years as the academy’s halfpipe skiing head coach. The group was in Colorado for some pre-Christmas training and contests.

Shaw completed the Nutbutter 720 again but, upon landing in what he called “punchy snow,” his skis and boots went through the snow and his ski popped off, propelling Shaw forward, as if going head-first over the handlebars on a bike.

Shaw landed on his neck, suffering a severe injury.

“I’m doing well, thanks, just dealing with some issues in Denver,” said Shaw from his hospital room Monday morning.

He was in the trauma intensive care unit at the hospital for five days, placed on blood pressure medication to help the initial healing of his spinal cord, and underwent surgery to repair damage to his vertebrae and torn ligaments in his neck.

The good news, according to his mom, Pippa, is that her son suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury, and that there is a good chance of a full recovery after a lengthy rehab.

“He has mobility in all four limbs with some control, but not complete control, especially in the hands,” said Pippa. “He does have some feeling in his limbs but not complete feeling in certain areas.”

A native of England, Shaw came to Vernon with his family when he was six and later became part of the Silver Star Mountain Resort’s freestyle ski team.

His coach at the time was Josh Dueck, who suffered his own serious injury when he broke his back after overshooting a demonstration jump, leaving him paralyzed.

Dueck has since gone on to become an amazing sit-skier, winning a silver in the slalom at the 2010 Paralympics in Whistler, and becoming the first sitskier to complete a backflip on snow.

Dueck has reached out to Shaw, as have many of Shaw’s friends and colleagues, “an overwhelming outpouring of love and support,” said his mom.

“I feel real fortunate and very positive with all of the support,” said Shaw. “The reaching out from the community is touching, and it motivates me to get better.”

His family and some close friends have been at his bedside in a Denver hospital since the accident. Shaw said he’s trying to stay positive but concedes it’s not the easiest thing to do at a time like this.

“It happened, there’s no sense in dwelling on it,” he said. “I’m more looking forward to moving on with it, taking each day as they come and trying to get myself as healthy as I can.

“I hope to be back in Vernon soon to say hello to everyone in person.”

“We need an acceleration lane going south to at least have access to one lane of traffic so it can merge into southbound traffic all prior to the Fortune Creek Bridge,” said Burr.

“There needs to be a lefthand turn lane for southbound traffic that will access McLeod Road.”

Right now, there is no leftturn lane into the subdivision for southbound traffic.

There is a flashing light indicator for the intersection.

Things like alternate routes have been discussed by township councils with ministry officials.

“We want a solution,” said Van Tienhoven. “The alternate access process we thought would be received with open

arms but there have been road blocks there.

“We’re working on this from all fronts. It’s something I think about every day when I come out of there.”

Township administrator Greg Betts told Burr that the ministry has indicated they would like to know what the major highway problems are for the township, and McLeod Road is at or near the top of the list.

“We threw some ideas out to them, including a possible alternate route from Harding and Powerhouse Roads in conjunction with the development that’s ongoing there,” said Betts. “They have agreed to a planning project with the township that looks at the long- short- and immediate terms.”

The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Okanagan map was initiated in 2013, offering local farmers and markets a place to pinpoint their locations. The map was distributed from Armstrong to Oliver – 8,000 copies at visitor centres, hotels and select businesses.

“Feedback from farms, advertising businesses and community members was very positive,” according to Buy Local BC Initiative co-ordinator Shayne Wright.

“Users liked the map and hoped to see it expand in future, while farmers and advertisers reported new customers and sales as a result of the map.”

Traffic calming becomes priority Coldstream is making an investment in road safety.

The district is purchasing a speed reader board – the estimated cost is $8,800.

The reader will serve as an educational tool to assist in getting motorists to adhere to local speed limits.

To help recover some of the costs, Coldstream is offering to rent the speed reader to Armstrong, Enderby and Spallumcheen.

Thieves take Christmas gifts roger knox Morning Star Staff

A Grinch has put a damper on Christmas for a Vernon family.

Vernon RCMP responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle Sunday in the 4000 block of 29th Street.

The theft occurred overnight. Stolen from the vehicle was a box of Christmas presents and other personal items that were left in plain view.

Molendyk, RCMP detachment spokesperson.

Thieves gained entry into the car by smashing the passenger side window.

One gift was later recovered by police.

Molendyk did not have an estimate on the total cost of the gifts taken from the vehicle.

Perhaps drivers are, after all, getting the message about police being out at this time of year looking for impaired drivers.

Over the past weekend, members of the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP’s North Okanagan Traffic Services conducted three, eight-hour road checks throughout Greater Vernon.

Not a single driver was arrested for impaired driving.

Police issued two 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs), two three-day IRPs and one Class 7 (Novice) driver was given a 12-hour suspension for having alcohol in their system which is a violation of their licence’s conditions.

Over the past week, there have been no impaired drivers, four 90-day IRPs, one automatic

“Perhaps our message is getting out,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “The numbers over the past week are very good.”

And they were better in the rural areas the weekend before.

Sixty vehicles were checked at a road block in Armstrong, and 10 were stopped at a check in Enderby.

In both cases, there were zero infractions.

“People going through the checks and we don’t find any impaired drivers, that’s great,” said Molendyk.

The checks will continue throughout the holiday season.

RCMP advise if you plan on celebrating to arrange a safe ride home.

On Dec. 19, officers from the Vernon RCMP detachment and SouthEast District emergency response team executed a search warrant in regards to a suspected grow operation in the 8100 block of Wallace Road in the BX. “Officers conducted a search of the property and buildings and approximately 1,400 plants were located on the property in addition to more than 13 pounds of packaged marijuana,” said Vernon

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

A stolen Yamaha WR250X motorcycle was also recovered in a large barn.

The suspects were not at home at the time the search warrant was executed.

Officers also noted that the buildings on the property had been contaminated by various chemicals used to sustain the grow operation.

In addition, officers assisted by B.C. Hydro, located a hydro bypass on the property that was the source of electricity to run this grow operation.

The file remains under police investigation.

It’s gratifying to see that drivers seem to be getting the message.

There were no impaired driving charges handed out last weekend by the RCMP despite conducting three, eight-hour road checks throughout Greater Vernon.

Just two weeks previous there were 14 motorists issued 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IPRs) compared to just a couple this past weekend.

While two can be argued is two too many, it shows that hopefully the message is getting out that impaired driving won’t be tolerated.

It’s a message that is crucially important during the holiday season, when people who have been celebrating the season need to find themselves a safe ride home.

Designated drivers and taxi cabs are a must for anyone that knows they will be imbibing at a social event. And that goes for day or night.

Another traffic safety consideration worth noting is the number of accidents last Friday during a snowstorm.

RCMP report there were 23 accidents in the North Okanagan during that time and, although each mishap is possibly for different reasons, drivers generally need to slow down for winter conditions.

The speed limit is a maximum for ideal conditions but when there’s snow on the road, possibly ice, and less than perfect visibility, a safe speed is considerably slower.

Please exercise caution on area roads over the holidays and ensure everyone arrives safely by slowing down for conditions and allowing us all to move into the new year on an accident-free note.

Cultural groups should work together

O

ver the last 30 years, I have done community development work with dozens of community organizations in many different communities throughout B.C. I have worked with social, legal, cultural, housing, sports and educational organizations. I also spent almost a year doing community development work with non-profits in Ukraine.

There is one universal truth that I have learned over the 30 years doing community development work: that communities and organizations that work together towards a common goal can accomplish much more, and often at a much lower cost, than those that go it alone.

Like most universal truths, this one is pretty much a no-brainer. However, there is something else that happens when organizations work together, that is also described by a universal truth: the whole becomes greater than the sum of its individual parts.

There is a synergy that happens when groups of people work together towards a common goal. They build momentum, share ideas and often come up with new and unusual solutions to problems.

TOURISM BOOTH I have the perfect solution to the City of Vernon’s dilemma with putting a visitor information office on 39th Avenue behind Civic Arena.

In my many searches for a commercial building or lot in Vernon, I spoke to many people at city hall as well as mayor and councillors.

I lobbied the City of Vernon to be proactive and asked that land be dedicated to commercial use.

The response that I received directed me to set up shop out in Enderby, Armstrong, Spallumcheen or Lumby.

Lumby is pretty. Lumby would be a great place to set up a City of Vernon Visitor Information Office.

I am just glad I am able to help with your traffic woes.

I also facilitated a strategic planning process for the Caetani Arts Centre. I have been involved to a lesser extent with the Vernon Community Arts Centre, having taken classes and my daughter having taught there on occasion.

Beairsto fronts on to 27th Street, a four-lane link between Highway 97 and Highway 6. Beairst's buffer to 27th Street is a chain link fence and a sidewalk. All loading and drop off is done away from 27th Street.

Alexis Park is similar in that also has a four-lane road to the side separated by a chain link fence and a sidewalk.

Loading and drop-off is on a side street, with school zone signage.

Ellison has a side yard facing Okanagan Landing Road separated by a chain link fence, two to three metres of grass to a walking/ bike path then 10 to 15 metres of grass to the shoulder of Okanagan Landing Road, a two lane road, then similar spacing to a frontage road.

While I was with the public art gallery, we had discussions with the museum about the possibilities of the art gallery moving into the library space and expanding the buildings together to meet joint needs.

While this didn’t happen, as the city took over the library space, I still believe there is great merit in the public art gallery, museum and potentially the arts centre working together on a capital building project.

There is quite a bit of overlap of needs with the museum, public art gallery and arts centre.

Road since 1980 and pedestrian/ bike traffic is either on the path or the frontage road. Some cyclist do ride on Okanagan Landing Road as there is a narrow bike lane marked of for them.

There is more traffic passing the other two schools than Ellison. The students that I have seen walking to and from school along Okanagan Landing Road only use the frontage road and the bike/walking path and use the traffic signal when crossing Okanagan Landing Road.

In short, the students I have seen do not use the shoulders of Okanagan Landing Road on their way to and from school, ergo there is no reason to have the zone signage on Okanagan Landing Road.

A yellow/green sign like the one at Alexis Park should be enough.

I truly believe that if these organizations worked together to develop a shared facility, this would not only benefit the community, but each of the organizations themselves. I also know that there are many more grants and financial opportunities for groups that work in partnership, which could help ease the demand on our local taxpayers.

Food banks seeking funds

Vernon firefighters and RCMP investigate a report of a suspicious fire in a rental home next to Dutch’s Campground on Kalamalka Road Monday. The owner said that no one was in the residence at the time of the fire, which caused substantial damage inside the home.

Community support in Vernon and Enderby is still being sought by the Salvation Army.

The agency is attempting to raise $461,000 in Vernon to maintain the food bank and other programs.

“Donations can be received at the Talkin Donkey Coffee House during its business hours, or delivered to the food bank Dec. 30,” said David MacBain, community ministries director.

A Good ‘n Wild New Year’s Eve KRISTIN FRONEMAN

Take a Celtic-Maritime band known for working up one heckuva kitchen party and mix ‘em with the sweet classic rock sounds of one of the North Okanagan’s most popular bar bands, and you’ve got something good ‘n wild, and perfect for dancing up a storm on New Year’s Eve. Vernon bands Cod Gone Wild and The Goods are teaming up to ring in 2014 with a joint concert at the Vernon Recreation Centre.

Guaranteed to be a high energy affair, the show will feature five hours of non-stop music, with no set breaks, said Cod Gone Wild’s Andrew Mercer.

“We are going to have two drum sets on the stage and do some songs together and then will play back and forward,” he said. “It’s a different contrast because our sound is so different from one another.”

The idea for a conjoined New Year’s Eve show came after The Goods’ James Taylor suggested to Mercer that the two bands do something together.

Besides playing a number of dances, concerts, fundraisers, and festivals, both bands have attracted huge crowds for the Downtown Vernon Association’s summer outdoor concert series, Civic Sounds.

“We are always looking for ways to partner up with different organizations and bands,” said Mercer, who is producing the show under his production company, Cod Productions, which he runs with his Cod Gone Wild bandmate, drummer Chad “Rhino” Carter.

For this show, Cod Productions has partnered with the Kalamalka Highlanders Pipe Band, who will be running the cash bar, with ticket proceeds going to the Arran Campbell Memorial Youth Pipe Band for the kids to go to the Piping Hot Summer Drummer camp at Silver Star.

“They are a good group to partner with,” said Mercer, who also leads the Okanagan Celtic Choir in Vernon. “We like to do things in the community and hope to make this an annual New Year’s event in the North Okanagan.”

Performing Arts Centre, Mercer says staging a big show such as this New Year’s Eve dance comes with some risk.

Unlike past New Year’s Eve events at the Vernon Recreation Centre, such as those put on by the now defunct Komasket Music Festival, and due to current B.C. liquor laws, the Good ‘n’ Wild New Year’s Eve event will not be open to minors.

“There’s less incentive to put on events with roadblocks, and it’s also expensive to put on a show, but we want to do it as we’re passionate about having events,” said Mercer.

“That said, we think this show will appeal to a wide demographic of ages... We are hearing about people coming from as far as Clearwater to the show. It’s nice to have that reach.”

For any out-of-towners, the Prestige Hotel in Vernon is offering a special rate for double occupancy that night with proof of ticket purchase.

In addition, Lumby restaurant, the Crazy Llama, which specializes in Latin American cuisine, will have snack items such as sandwiches and a dessert crêpe for sale at the event.

“Their food is fantastic and different. We are excited to have them on board,” said Mercer. “This is again about making connections in the community... The event would not be possible without all of our sponsors.”

Compassion for others

f you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” That wisdom came from the Dalai Lama.

Compassion is not empathy, because compassion allows us to reach out to someone and almost walk in their shoes. Compassion is an act of love shown toward another person or animal.

Wikipedia stated it very clearly, “Compassion is the emotion that we feel in response to the suffering of others that motivates a desire to help.”

It’s like the velvet glove of love in the form of a friend, relative or other human being - just when we may Carol Fawcett be reeling from a major loss, or have had some bad health news, or need an understanding ear or perhaps financial assistance or - heaven forbid - all of the above.

Empathy allows us to feel another’s pain or angst and we hook in to the emotional aspect of the experience. It could be said that empathy leads us to be compassionate to others.

Like a lot of you, I have been the recipient of compassionate acts during many difficult times in my life. In turn, I have done my best to give back to anyone who may need some extra caring. Sometimes the humanness that allows us to be compassionate can get in the way, leaving us feeling that perfection in the moment is an elusive quest for all of us.

In a perfect world then, compassion would reign as one of the many qualities that we hold high. We need to give acceptance and love to everyone we meet, including ourselves. Polonius, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, said it best, “To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”

If we are not honest, truthful and compassionate with ourselves, it could be an impossible task to pass on those wonderfully empowering feelings and emotions to others.

How can you show compassion in your world?

What can you do that will make a difference in someone’s life? It doesn’t have to be huge, just a small thing can make a big difference. In fact, it is the small things that often make the biggest difference in someone’s day.

Compassion is ours to give away to others with no conditions attached.

I know it is hard to be non-judgmental to those who ask you for money on the street. I rarely give money and I try to hold true to my belief that we cannot sit in judgment of where we have not been.

So, instead I offer to buy a coffee or a sandwich.

It is my hope this Christmas that we can all look with compassionate eyes to those who face challenge in their life.

Make yourself happy and actively practice compassion toward others. It will make a difference in our world and in yours too.

BOXING Credit union helps community Morning Star Staff

It’s a North Okanagan Christmas tradition.

Every year for the last nine years, VantageOne Credit Union’s Great Gobble Give-Away has provided 52,000 turkeys to its members, and to local charities. This equates to more than $1,265,000 for the past nine years.

“The Great Gobble Give-Away is a wonderful opportunity to thank our members,” said Glenn Benischek, CEO of VantageOne. “We also recognize the fact that many members are thrilled to be able to donate their turkeys, which go a long way in helping out so many organizations within our community.”

This year, 6,200 turkeys were provided to VantageOne member households as a way of saying thank you to members for their patronage.

Between Nov. 29 and Dec. 7, VantageOne members stopped in at any of the five branch locations to pick up their coupons for a free turkey. These coupons were then redeemed at SaveOn Foods and Buy-Low Foods in Vernon, and Askew’s Foods in Armstrong.

Every year, many members choose to donate

their turkeys to local organizations and agencies that have partnered with VantageOne for the Great Gobble Give-Away.

More than $15,000 worth of turkeys will be donated to these local agencies prior to Christmas.

The agencies benefiting from the Great Gobble Give-Away include the Salvation Army, the Family Resource Centre, Ellison Elementary School, NOCCS, the Halina Seniors Centre, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Junction Literacy Centre, ALP, Howard House, Together for Christmas, the Secret Santa Society, the Armstrong Food Bank, the Enderby and District Community Resource Center, Kindale Developmental Association and the Enderby Soup Kitchen.

“For many of these agencies and their clients these turkeys will provide a much needed boost of Christmas spirit at a time that can be difficult for many,” said Benischek.

VantageOne, formerly the Vernon and District Credit Union, has been part of the community since 1944 and will be celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2014.

BC Hydro’s imposition of manual meter reading fees has persuaded most holdouts to accept a wireless smart meter.

BC Hydro imposed a $35 monthly fee starting Dec. 1 for customers who refuse to part with their mechanical electricity meters, after offering the 68,000 customers who still had them the option of accepting the new meter with the radio transmission function on or off.

BC Hydro reported the results to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC), which is reviewing the fees. More than 48,000 customers chose the smart meter to avoid the meter reading fee.

Another 450 chose the radio-off meter, which comes with a $100 setup fee and $20 a month starting April 1 to cover costs of collecting readings.

Another 6,270 customers chose to keep their mechanical meters, and 13,110 more did not respond to BC Hydro’s letters, so they will have

the $35 fee added to their bills until they choose another option.

BC Hydro reports that 99 per cent of its customers now have the wireless meter. Most of those have been switched to automated billing, and have their daily electricity use displayed on their online account pages.

Claims of health effects from wireless meter transmissions have been rejected by health authorities, and also by the BCUC in a review of FortisBC’s wireless meter program. BCUC found that the radio frequency signal from a bank of smart meters is less than 10 per cent of the natural background level, and a tiny fraction of the exposure from a cellular phone.

Citizens for Safe Technology, one of the more active opponents of the wireless grid, was represented at the FortisBC hearings by Donald Maisch.

BCUC rejected Maisch’s claims of health hazards, noting that Maisch’s “consulting livelihood depends on public fears and concerns about radio frequency exposure.”

Top talents take to Star Morning Star Staff

More than 120 years of experience and passion is coming to Silver Star Mountain Resort.

Norm Kreutz, director of Silver Star’s snow sport school, is excited to have three of Canada’s most highly qualified skiers make Silver Star their home base, including former Canadian men’s ski team coach Glenn Wurtele.

“It’s fantastic to have professionals of this calibre at Silver Star,” said Kreutz. “ And it just makes one of Canada’s top snow sport school’s even better. These individuals bring a true passion and expertise for the sport of skiing along with lifetimes of experience in mountain cultures the world over.”

Wurtele holds the highest level of certification in France, diplome nationale/professeur de ski, from the French National School of Skiing and Climbing.

In addition, he is also certified at the highest level of coaching in Canada, high performance elite international.

Wurtele was responsible for the Canadian ski team men’s program during a World Cup-winning era, and is a course facilitator for the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation.

Jacques Morel, from Val d’Isere, France, is a former member of the French ski team and also holds the diplome nationale/professeur de ski qualification in the French National School of Skiing and Climbing.

Morel also holds the highest qualification in Canada as a level four Instructor in the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance. He brings his love for skiing and passion for mountain culture to Silver Star as he and his wife Silke make their permanent home in Vernon.

Grant (The Dart) Rutherglen, who earned his nickname during a poorly planned foray into paragliding on skis, is one of the original ski gurus from the West Kootenays.

Rutherglen holds the highest level of teaching qualification, level four in the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance, is a former Canadian National Team member, a recent inductee into the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation Hall of Fame and a course

facilitator for the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation.

Jordan Burns had to look back to his Pee Wee days in Greater Vernon minor hockey to find a team as talent-laden as the Powell River Kings.

The 2007-08 Watkin Motors Mustangs featured current junior stars Curtis Lazar, Colton Thibault, Dylan Bowen, Alex Gillies and Cole Sanford.

The Kings’ lineup seems to be equally blessed with depth, and it showed Saturday night at Kal Tire Place as they upended the Vernon Vipers 7-2 in front of 1,700 B.C. Hockey League fans.

“We have incredible depth on forward,” said Burns, an 18-year-old defenceman committed to the NCAA Division 1 Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks.

“Any one of our top three lines could be a first line on another team. Any of our dee can play top four and both our goalies are really good.

“It’s a treat to be on the team for sure.”

The Kings (24-8-2-2), one point behind Victoria for first overall, overcame an early two-goal deficit, exploding for seven unanswered goals, including three on the powerplay to brush back the Snakes.

“We had more than 20 applications so there is still lots of interest in our tournament,” said Classic chairman Marty Stein. “The teams that don’t get in are disappointed and we hear about it.”

The Abbotsford Hawks, late last week, replaced the Cowichan Valley Capitals as the eighth and final entry after some issues with the Caps’ standing with the Vancouver Island hockey association were discovered.

Abbotsford, Prince George Cougars, Blackfoot Chiefs of Calgary and the Seattle Sno-Kings make up the Sun Valley Source for Sports Division.

The Watkin Motors Vernon Vipers will play in the Coca-Cola Division with Warman Wildcats of Saskatchewan, Strathcona Warriors of Edmonton and Nanaimo Clippers.

Vernon’s Justin Dorey is one step closer to fulfilling his Olymic dream.

Dorey took fourth place Friday night at the FIS Copper Mountain U.S. Grand Prix Halfpipe in Colorado, laying down a stellar second run for 86.20 points.

“I don’t tend to land my first runs, so having done that put me in a great head-space,” Justin Dorey Dorey told the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association.

“I did a left double cork 1260 into a right side double cork 1260. I’d never done that combination in competition before.”

Canadian coach Trennon Paynter said it was unfortunate that Dorey missed the Grand Prix podium, but added it was a solid performance.

“It’s a bit of a tough break to be in fourth position, but Dorey did all sorts of great things tonight.

There are very few people in the sport who can pull off the combination that he did. It significantly ups his game.”

The 25-year-old Dorey missed part of last season after undergoing surgery to repair damaged ligaments in his left shoulder. He has rebounded big-time and is currently sixth in the FIS men’s standings with 72 world cup points.

Mike Riddle of Sherwood Park, Alta. and Matt Margetts of Penticton finished seventh and 10th, respectively, in the 12-man event. Next stop on the World Cup Tour is Friday, Jan. 3 in Calgary.

Lazar believes in Canadian entry KEVIN MITCHELL Sports Editor

Vernon’s Curtis Lazar pulled on Team Canada jersey No. 26 for the first time Sunday in Malmö, Sweden. Somebody named Jonathan Drouin is wearing his normal No. 27.

The Canadians had earlier released Quebec forward Felix Girard, getting down to their final 22-man roster. For Lazar, it was a combination of relief and joy as he realized a major bucket list item.

“It feels great knowing I will be a part of this team in the tournament,” he told The Morning Star. “A while back, I set myself a goal to make this team and to achieve it feels really good. The hard work is just beginning though. Every team is elite and you always need to bring your A game in order to be successful.

“Getting to represent your country is always special as well. We have received tons of support from back home already and it truly motivates us.”

The Edmonton Oil Kings’ centre and Ottawa Senators’ first-round draft pick said Sunday’s 3-0 pre-competition loss to Sweden in the 38th IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championships will go down as a lesson learned.

“Sweden has a lot of skill and we knew that coming in. What’s disappointing for us is that we got outworked and outbattled tonight. No one was sharp mentally and

it showed. Our goalie, Jake Paterson, kept us in it no doubt. We are lucky this is only exhibition and it is a good reality check for our squad.

“Good teams know how to rebound and we are looking forward to our next game versus the Swiss. Coach (Brent) Sutter has challenged all of us to buy in and ask for some more from ourselves and I believe that we have the right guys to do something special.”

The Canadians did bounce back and stopped the Swiss 4-1 Monday with Drouin (Halifax Mooseheads) scoring twice and Bo Horvat (London Knights) and 16-yearold phenom Connor McDavid (Erie Otters) adding singles. Sam Reinhart (Kootenay Ice) supplied three helpers.

On his own play against the Swedes, Lazar said: “I was quite nervous coming in, I threw some nice checks early and got into the game. I made some mistakes adjusting to our new systems but it was a good learning curve for myself. As the game went on I had a couple scoring chances that I need to capitalize on. All in all, it was the first step and I’m looking forward to keep on building each game.”

Canada received good news Monday when the IHF announced Dumba will not be disciplined further for kneeing forward Erik Karlsson during Team Canada’s loss to Sweden. Dumba was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for the incident.

Seniors helping seniors Editor’s note: The following is from Coldstream Meadows Retirement Community.

Christmas is a time for giving.

We often think of children and toys at Christmas time.

“The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.”

This Christmas, visions of lonely and needy seniors danced in the heads of the residents and staff of Coldstream Meadows Retirement Community.

Nexus provided an opportunity to turn the vision around, giving details of a senior family who would appreciate and enjoy some Christmas cheer.

The spirit of the season was shared at Coldstream Meadows with our second Seniors helping Seniors project.

Residents purchased items they thought this particular senior family would enjoy, everything from cozy blankets to socks and homemade mittens and hats.

I have nine toes. I was born with 10 but along the way I lost one due to the complications of frostbite Dr. April Sanders and finally, the surgeon’s knife. There are perks (cheaper, quicker pedicures) and drawbacks (no flip-flops) to the revised me, but I have no regrets. In retrospect, sacrificing a digit was a small price to pay for freedom from the daily pain of a seemingly incurable osteomyelitis (bone infection).

The surgery was uneventful. I walked into the hospital with 10 toes and left with nine. In between I had a pleasant conversation with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist and a really good sleep.

I have had other operations in the past and I can say that I have never had a bad experience. Although general anesthesia should never be undertaken unnecessarily, and never should it be employed in Michael Jackson style as a drug for sleep, modern-day anesthesia for the healthy patient is relatively straightforward thanks to better anesthetic agents and the expertise of anesthesiologists.

As much as one may take elective surgery and general anesthesia for granted today, the process has not always been so

uneventful. For most of history, surgeries were performed cold, that is, conscious, without the benefit of anesthesia. Early physicians employed various agents to induce sleep or dissociate the patient from the pain of the procedure and to this end combinations of opium, marijuana, belladonna, cocaine, alcohol, mandrake or jimsonweed were all tried with variable success and significant toxicity.

None of these agents worked especially well or for very long and as a result the decision to undergo surgery was a daunting one, made only by the courageous patient on the threshold of life and death.

Under such primitive conditions one can only imagine with pity and horror the fates of young men centuries past who, when wounded on the battlefield, underwent amputation with the appallingly inadequate combination of a bottle of liquor, opium and a saw.

Under such circumstances it is not surprising that the reputation of a 19th century surgeon was built upon the speed of his surgery. In the 1840s Robert Liston (a distant cousin of my husband) was considered a skilled surgeon because he could perform an amputation in two and a half minutes. For additional speed he would hold his surgical knife between his teeth, freeing up both hands for the procedure. As the germ theory of disease would not be recognized until 1865, 50 per cent of surgical patients succumbed to postoperative infection and died.

In 1846, an event occurred that would propel the field of surgery into the future.

In the packed medical amphitheater of Massachusetts General, a Mr. Gilbert Allen was the ground zero patient for effective anesthesia. While a gallery of surgeons watched, ether rendered him unconscious and amnesic and a lump

was swiftly removed from Mr. Allen’s jaw.

This historic breakthrough in the field of anesthesia occurred just in time to be made available to the 50,000 men who underwent amputation on the battlefields of the American Civil War (chloroform was discovered around the same time but tended to cause fatal cardiac rhythms).

The advancements in anesthesia in the past 167 years are miraculous and the process of going under has gone from a harrowing ordeal to an experience that, for the healthy patient, more resembles a dinner of several courses (albeit a horizontal one). At the risk of being facetious, let me explain. Start by thinking of the OR as the restaurant of choice. A reservation is made beforehand and you are taken to the appropriate table. The experience commences with a starter of oxygen, propafol (induces anesthesia) and rocuronium (paralyzing agent). Feeling a little dry? The IV fluids will help. Then the general anesthesia, desflourane or a similar agent, would be your main course as it keeps you under for the duration of your stay. Having a little discomfort from the surgery? A little analgesic via your IV will help. Any individual needs that arise during your stay will be immediately addressed by staff, as you are the only customer. In this restaurant, dessert is included. It comes in the form of the reversal agents, to wake you up. The procedure is over and it’s off to the post op recovery room and time for the staff to prepare the next setting. The whole experience was not to your liking? Relax, you won’t remember a thing but when you are recovered, think of how anesthesia is just one more reason to feel lucky to be living in this time and place.

Some families develop creative rituals like decorating a miniature Christmas tree at the cemetery, donating money to a charity, singing a favourite seasonal song, reciting a special prayer before the evening meal, or even just lighting a candle.

Symbolic gestures like these can help families validate their feelings of sadness and overcome the guilt of enjoying special occasions.

The last few years have been hard on many in our community, but some pets have had an even harder time of it. Local animal rescue groups are overflowing with more and more abandoned and surrendered animals, as people find they are unable to afford the cost of their beloved pets, have to relocate for work or move to less expensive accommodations that don’t allow pets, have had health issues, and many other reasons that they just can’t meet their pets’ needs anymore.

How can you help? Please consider giving rescued animals the gift of life this holiday season!

Local rescue organizations need donations of all kinds.

Funds for food and medical expenses are usually the greatest needs, but check with your favourite group to see what you can help with. Many groups need volunteers and/or foster homes for rescued pets. There are also “pet-food banks” and “spay/ neuter and emergency medical programs” that assist pet owners, so that they can keep their pets during a difficult time.

If you are thinking of adopting a new pet, great, but please wait until after the holidays to bring a new friend into your home. The Christmas holidays are often very stressful, busy and hectic times and generally the worst time for pets to try to adjust to their new surroundings, especially baby animals.

If you still want that “under-the-tree” experience, try picking out your new pet before the holidays and putting their picture in a frame, make a video, get a similar stuffed animal, etc. Most shelters will allow you to pick out a new pet and hold them for you until after the holidays, when things are quieter and less

hristmas is a time of great feasting and for most of us there will be a lot of leftovers to deal with after the main meal.

There’s always our fill after that of turkey or ham sandwiches, turkey a la king, turkey pot pies, egg scrambles, and casseroles, not to mention delicious turkey soup, and today I’m

stressful for all concerned. You can usually make arrangements with a shelter to bring the whole family in for a special outing to pick out your new pal or pals.

The decision to bring home a new pet should be a happy one, but unfortunately, sometimes people make “impulse” decisions to get a new pet without really having given the idea a lot of thought and/or have no experience in caring for an animal.

Often, these arrangements don’t work out and the pet is often given away, surrendered to a rescue group or just abandoned, as if pets are “disposable,” like so many things in our society.

If you are thinking you would like to adopt a companion animal, but aren’t sure about it, please do some advance research into the demands of care for that type or breed of pet.

It is important to make sure your new pet fits into your lifestyle.

There are many knowledgeable people in the community that can provide you with information about your prospective new pet’s dietary, exercise, housing and medical care and costs.

If after researching, you still aren’t sure about what kind of pet to get, consider fostering an animal for a short time.

Many rescued pets need special care or just a home until space is available at a shelter. This way, you can “try out”

having a dog, cat, bird, rabbit, guinea pig for a few weeks/ months, to see if it is a good fit for you. If it isn’t, well, you have helped an animal and now know that it doesn’t work.

If it is a good fit, you can usually adopt the pet you have fostered or another that might be an even better fit.

If you have the time, love and space for a pet, but can’t manage the financial costs of having your own pet, you can also consider fostering. Most animal rescue organizations can provide the food and medical care for the fostered animal, if you cannot afford the expense.

If your circumstances don’t allow you to give an animal the ongoing, lifetime care it needs, then fostering is an excellent option. If you spend six months away every winter, you can offer to foster an animal for the time you have available.

As someone who has fostered and re-homed hundreds of rescued animals, I can honestly say it was worth every cent and minute of my time. Animals, especially rescued animals, give something to you that can’t be found anywhere else in life. I hope you take the opportunity to find out for yourself!

thickened. Transfer to a bowl, add the shredded turkey, and toss to combine. Allow to cool slightly. Meanwhile, place tomato, cucumber, onion and mint in a bowl and toss with half the lime juice.

Season and set aside.

Mash the avocado with the garlic and remaining lime juice. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spread avocado mixture on the base of the rolls, then fill with lettuce, turkey mixture and some tomato salsa.

That is often true, but there can still be matters out of your control. Take today’s deal, for example. Look at only the North-South hands.

In which contract would you choose to play?

When the deal was originally played, the bidding went as shown. North-South were using two-over-one game-forcing. On the third round, South broke a golden rule of Blackwood by using the convention with two fast losers in both unbid suits, with no guarantee

that partner had a first- or second-round control in those suits. South should have bid four spades. Then, North probably would have passed, although with controls in both hearts and clubs, there would have been a good case for his using Blackwood.

Six diamonds and six spades are both excellent contracts, apparently losing only one club trick. However, at the table, against six diamonds, West led the club jack. East won with her king and realized that, unless West had a slow trump trick like jack-fourth, there was only one way to defeat the slam -- shift to a spade. West happily ruffed and South

unhappily wrote minus 100 on her scoresheet.

Then North pointed out that six spades was making.

Against that slam, East’s best lead is a low club! If North carelessly plays low from the board, West wins and gives his partner a diamond ruff.

In a world short of positive role models (those with values of hard work, honesty, accountability, with a moral compass that never falters, to whom a handshake means more than any piece of paper or any official stamp) we find ourselves with one less.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing or Archie Clements (Clem) Betton on December 10, 2013.

Dad was born in High River Alberta on July 11, 1925. He had fond memories of growing up around his grandfather’s farm in that area and of his dad’s farming and cartage businesses. His fond memories were no doubt influenced by meeting mom (Millie) who he married on May 24, 1950 in Calgary Alberta.

The family that followed (Pat, Donald and Al) were all born in Alberta where Dad continued farming and other entrepreneurial endeavours until cold winters finally got the best of him.

Dad loved music and dancing. It brought him and mom together and was one of their last pleasures together before she left us in 2001.

Dad was predeceased by mom (Millie), his wife of 51 years, his sister Gwen Dube and brother Fred Betton.

Randy was known and loved by many. He was actively involved in several community and charitable organizations over the years. Many will remember him as the owner of George Randall’s Men’s Wear in downtown Vernon. Randy’s many contributions and wonderful gifts of friendship will be missed by all.

She is predeceased by her parents: Harvey and Ethel Lynn; brother: Gordie Lynn; sisters: Dorothy Hansen, and Ethel McFarland.

The move to the Coldstream Valley happened in 1966. Dad never forgot his Alberta roots or his many friends there.

It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of our son and brother, Colin, in Vancouver, BC .

Colin was born and raised in Vernon, BC. He completed his schooling there, and on graduation left to travel the world. Eventually he settled in Vancouver, and for many years was employed by Sauder Lumber. He loved to hike and cycle around his chosen city. He had a keen intellect and a great eloquence with words.

Colin loved to read and was an avid collector of books. Of a quiet and gentle nature he strove to find peace in his life and community. He will be greatly missed by his parents Mitchell and Frances Brown of Vernon; sisters: Peg (Tony) Wolf of Kelowna; Wenonah (Alan) March of Langley; two nieces.

Cremation entrusted to Henderson’s Funeral Home, Langley, BC. A family memorial to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
