15 Christmases, 15 photos for local twins The Vick twins are still believers By Diane Strandberg THE TRI-CITY NEWS

S

anta will be making a special stop in Port Coquitlam tonight to greet two of his favourite teenagers. According to Mr. Claus, Brandon and Quinton Vick deserve special recognition for their 15 years of devotion. The twins, who attend Terry Fox secondary school, haven’t succumbed to pressures to believe in anything other than the notion that an old guy in velvet and fur can still circle the globe in 24 hours to give gifts to good boys and girls. The twins are nearly of an age for a driver’s licence but they still visit Santa Land at Coquitlam Centre every year and are first in line to sit on Santa’s knee. He even knows them by name and asks them about their burgeoning film careers (both appear in the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart, airing in January). Like many holiday traditions, visiting Santa at the mall is a happy moment and the Vick boys are thrilled to be part of the experience. “Why wouldn’t you believe in Santa?”asks Quinton. “There wouldn’t be a Christmas without him,” his brother Brandon chimes in. The strapping teenagers still sit together on Santa’s ample lap, just like they have for every photo taken over the last 15 years. If you gaze at the photos, you can see the boys’ features have changed, but not their smiles.

Twin brothers Brandon and Quinton Vick, students at Terry Fox secondary school in Port Coquitlam, have visited Santa Claus at Coquitlam Centre for each of their 15 years to get a photo. “He’s a jolly, happy soul,”said Quinton to explain why he and his brother still enjoy visiting the man in red. “These are special kids,”Santa acknowledges.

For Santa, sharing a special moment with the twins — Quinton asked for a wooden baseball bat while Brandon requested video editing software — is part of a fun time at the mall that

first and they acquiesce to his authority. “Kids are not outrageous, they have fun and that’s the main thing.” Meanwhile, the Vick boys will have trouble getting to sleep tonight

as they wait for Santa to arrive. Maybe this will be the year they hear him say as he drives out of sight, shouting,“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.” dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

Red Nose numbers are up, get a safe ride home

MORE PHOTOS

Here are some more photos taken by TriCity News readers for Christmas. Right, Pauline Kerr took this photograph of her granddaughter Sophie Snaden of Port Coquitlam in a winter wonderland. Far right, Darren Quarin of Port Moody used his camera and computer to create this striking photo illustration. He explained that he snapped a photo of Santa in a mall last Christmas, then “edited it for fun.”

With just one more night left in the Operation Red Nose campaign, the program is already breaking last year’s records. Between the evening of Friday, Dec. 13 to the early morning hours of Dec. 15, 153 volunteers gave 258 rides in Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities. That is up 15% from the same time period last year, when 143 volunteers gave 223 rides. The program has long been popular in the Tri-Cities, where 160 people received rides, but its recent expansion into New Westminster and Burnaby has driven the increase in the overall numbers. Operation Red Nose is a safe ride home service run by volunteers over the four weekends before Christmas as well as New Years Eve. The program gets people who have been drinking over the holidays and their vehicles home safely. Those who wish to take advantage of the service can call 778-866-6673. SD43 collecting $1.8M in provincial holdback cash The Tri-CiTy NewS

School District 43 is in the process of analyzing its financial situation after the province released its holdback grants last week. The province announced that school districts would get $60 per student from funds held back at the beginning of the year in case enrolment was higher than forecast. For SD43, that amount is $1.8 million, and while less than the $2.5 million budgeted for 2013/’14, the district has two more opportunities to get more grants when February and May enrolments are calculated. The Ministry of Education, meanwhile, stated in a press release that $17.8 million in holdback funding would be used to fund higher student enrolment in some districts, $31.6 million would be distributed in $60 perstudent grants and a further $10.2 million is being kept back to address enrolment growth in February and May. “By holding back this portion of the $4.725 billion total funding committed to K-12 education for 2013-14, the ministry is able to manage unforeseen pressures or swings in student enrolment and

CUPe OKs contract School District 43 school support workers have voted in favour of a wage deal giving them a 3.5% increase between July 1, 2013 and May 1, 2014. In a ratification vote taken Thursday, 84% of members voted in favour of the settlement, which also provides them with a drug card that allows members have their medication benefits paid up front, without the need to submit receipts for medication. The deal, reached under the province’s cooperative gains mandate, means the district will have to find savings — estimated at about $985,000 this school year and $1.7 million next year — to cover the cost. In October, the district approved a savings plan that would cut transportation costs, supplies, utilities, special purpose funds and noncore salaries. This is the first wage increase for the CUPE members in four years.

ensure all school districts are treated equitably,” the ministry stated in a press release. SD43 secretary treasurer Mark Ferrari is awaiting other information before producing a second quarter report that shows the district’s financial situation, and trustees will be given first glimpse, possibly as early as next week. “There’s a lot of ins and outs that are coming in to play,”Ferrari said. The district is also awaiting the final outcome of a forensic audit to look into how it ended up with an $8 million operating deficit last year. That report is also expected to be released to the public in the new year.

n the holiday season, perhaps some silliness could be forgiven. But the actions of MP James Moore and Port Moody council in the last two weeks are so atrocious as to be beyond folly. In Moore’s case, the savvy MP for Port MoodyWestwood-Port Coquitlam was widely excoriated for saying to a radio reporter: “Is it my job to feed my neighbour’s child? I don’t think so.” Several days later, he posted a statement on his website, saying: “In response to a question from a reporter last week, I made an insensitive comment that I deeply regret. I apologize.” But responding to online criticism in the two days previous, he had tweeted, “The headline is neither a quote, nor accurate of anything I’ve ever said. Quite ridiculous in fact” and said he wouldn’t apologize“for being lied about.” Now, MP Moore is an intelligent man and a fair review of his time in government will show that he has, among other things, managed to attract considerable federal funding to important Tri-City projects. But the in-between of the comment and the apology is deeply troubling: First, he made dishonest statements about his comments and, in doing so, impugned the radio reporter’s reputation; second, he apparently thought he could get away with it despite the fact his original comment was recorded. In Port Moody, meanwhile, council held a special meeting Dec. 17 to approve funding to help operators of the burned Mossom Creek Hatchery. Good news. But at the same special meeting — held with no community TV cameras or reporters present, and only a single citizen on hand — council voted itself sizable raises: more than 29% for councillors and more than 16% for the mayor. What city council members should be paid is a topic for another day. The cynical way in which they set that pay last week, well out of the public eye, isn’t. And we find it difficult to believe that in these mediasavvy times, not one of Port Moody’s seven council members would step up and say something like: “I fully support these raises. But perhaps this vote, which will undoubtedly be controversial, should be held at a regular council meeting in the NewYear, so we don’t look like we’ve done something to be ashamed of.” Which, now, they do. Silly, too.

The biggest idea of 2013: co-operation BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA ne of Canada’s great entrepreneurial success stories in recent years is WestJet, the Calgary-based airline that is expanding across the country and taking on European routes. Clive Beddoe, the founding CEO of Westjet, was famous for helping the cabin crew tidy up the plane before getting off a flight. The company is also known for its profit-sharing program, with all employees referred to as “owners”who have a stake in the success of the operation. I thought of this management approach when news emerged that the B.C. government was offering public service unions a new kind of contract, with a five-year term and wage increases tied to improved economic growth. The surprising thing is that unions are

O

accepting the idea, even though provincial growth must exceed the government’s independent economic forecast council projections before it can take effect in a given year. The generally non-militant Health Sciences Association was the first to recommend acceptance of a five-year agreement with only 5.5% raises guaranteed. Then they were joined by negotiators for 51,000 health and social services employees represented by the BC Government Employees’ Union and other unions that have long been adversaries of the BC Liberals. John Fryer, negotiator for the BCGEU going back to the epic battles with Social Credit governments and now a professor at University of Victoria, wasn’t impressed when he heard the news. “These deals reflect what happens when public sector unions back the losing party in a provincial election,”he said.“Union bargaining power takes a trip down the pooper.” I think there’s more than that going on. Perhaps today’s union leadership is beginning to accept that its wage, benefit and pension

Mossom is taking steps to rebuild The Editor, Re. “Lots of help for Mossom” (The Tri-City News, Dec. 18). On behalf of the volunteers at the Mossom Creek Hatchery, I wish to express profound gratitude for the surge of community kindness since the Dec. 11 fire. City of Port Moody council and staff have backed us from the instant we called in the blaze that quickly turned our beloved hatchery and environmental education centre to ashes. We are deeply grateful for the rapid and fulsome response from the city, which has included a $10,000 emergency fund and the loan of a trailer to get us back in operation on site. Messages have poured in with kind words and offers of assistance — equipment, labour, fundraising, project management, planning, building, volunteer co-ordination, grant writing, documentation and archival research. Funds to rebuild are coming from elementary, middle and secondary school fundraisers, individuals, organizations and companies too numerous to mention here. Centennial students even from the late 1970s are offering their photos

and news clippings to rebuild our history. Our Mossom Facebook page is incredibly active with powerful reminiscing. Promises of big ticket items for a significant fundraiser are emerging. We are deeply touched by all these gifts and by so many expressions of condolence. These have come not only from those who have experienced our educational and enhancement work in the watershed but from many who have never been there. It tells us that our community places a high value on nature and nature education. We thank The Tri-City News for its extensive stories. This has helped to bring the public to us at a time when we need support more than ever. We are currently in the process of organizing our rebuilding team in order to take advantage of the generosity being offered by so many. Due to the proximity of the holidays, this will take a few weeks. We humbly request some patience as we reflect about what this rebuild should look like. We look forward to sharing this new vision in early January and will be welcoming input from the community. Ruth Foster, Co-founder, Mossom Creek Hatchery

Who’d pay for brekkie? SUBMITTED PHOTO

The Editor, Re. “Shame on MP for comments” (Letters, The Tri-City News, Dec. 18). In response to letter writer Jane Thomsing suggesting that MP

James Moore host a breakfast for malnourished children, who would pay for this? Although I would be happy to donate for this, it definitely wouldn’t be funded by Moore. The

cost would be taken out of taxpayer funds and if, by chance, Moore did fund it, taxes could be increased to cover his losses with a pay increase. P. Baillie, Coquitlam

Construction causing North Rd. biz issues

Since 1989

at

By Diane Strandberg The Tri-CiTy News

The busy Christmas shopping season has been a bust for some businesses in Coquitlam where Evergreen Line construction is in full swing. Instead of busy aisles and manicure stations, the stores and shops in a mini-mall at 555 North Rd. are unusually quiet, the owners say. “Ou r bus ine ss is threatened,” said Grigori Khaskin, who owns Euro Foods with his wife Svetlana. In October, street parking was removed to make way for construction of columns for the elevated rapid transit system, and Khaskin said customers are turning away, either because they can’t find parking on a side street or because a small lot at the side of the mall is full. While shelves are piled high with Russian chocolates, Ukrainian cakes, Polish pickles and Austrian cheese, the aisles are surprisingly empty. Svetlana Khaskin said staff hours have been cut and deliveries have been delayed. When it snows the situation gets even worse she said, because customers can’t get down the steep ramp into the side parking lot. “And delivery, it’s a nightmare because trucks can not stop normally,”Grigori said.

Svetlana Khaskin outside Euro Foods, where business has been slow because of Evergreen Line construction. In one instance, a pallet of food spilled on the sidewalk when the dolly carrying it down the ramp tipped over. Two other businesses are concerned about their bottom line because of the removal of street parking, a situation which is expected to last until mid-March. “This time last year, we were so busy,”said Linda Pham, owner of Phat Nail and Spa. Now, business is so slow staff “sit and play cards because they have nothing to do.” Elitech Computer owner Fay Li said parking is so tight in the area that customers have to park blocks away and lug computers to her store. Some are simply going elsewhere to avoid the hassle. “Christmas time is supposed to be busiest,”Li said. The businesses

would like to see more help from EGRT Construction, which is building the Evergreen Line, or the Ministry of Transportation to find a solution to the parking lot. One idea would be to negotiate space at some of the nearby businesses with large parking lots. Evergreen Line spokesperson Amanda Farrell, said businesses were told to expect lane closures on North Road until mid-March 2014. “On-street parking will not be available until then,” she stated in an email. In the meantime, she said staff will follow up with Euro Foods and invite the owners to participate in an Evergreen Line business liaison committee, which was established two years ago to address concerns of businesses. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

Welcome to the driver’s seat

There are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Zack Spencer

Visit the Honda Accord Coupe photo gallery at drivewayBC.ca

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),

which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. The rest of The 4-cylinder equipped the dash is large, with big models come with halogen of a smart looking car cup holder and plenty of headlamps and 17-inch storage areas. that is well equipped alloy wheels. The EX-L that Honda is bucking, with this Accord is $30,100 for the leather and navi and Coupe, is the inclusion of a 6-speed the V6 premium is $35,500. Not an manual transmission and V6 engine. The inexpensive car but most are very well latest movement is to turbo or superequipped. charged 4-cylinder engines to replace V6

‘‘

Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the

power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The

V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

Tundra, for the Wild West The 2014 Toyota Tundra has deep roots in the Wild, Wild West. The 1794 Edition is a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio, Texas. In 2002, Toyota began the search for a U.S. facility to build the second generation Toyota Tundra. The 2,000-acre ranch site was acquired and ground breaking took place Oct. 17, 2003. Just like the ranch it replaced, hard work and dedication prevailed bringing production numbers up to 200,000 units. On Sept. 18, 2013, the one-millionth truck, a Sunset Bronze Mica colored, 1794 Edition Tundra, rolled out. This truck has a completely new body design with an aggressive grille that extends from the bumper to the raised hood. The fender flares are larger and more defined, and the tailgate has Tundra stamped into the sheet metal. The top of the line Western themed 1794 Edition comes with a unique chrome grille and chrome and silver bumper. It’s almost like a large belt buckle! The inside screams Country music with its exclusive premium saddle tan brown leather seats with embossed and suede accents. Soft-touch materials are found on the center console, the front and rear door trim, and the instrument panel. Rich maple woodgrain covers the steering wheel, dash and shifter. Big improvement to the back seat of the Double Cab and Crew Max where a 60/40 split bench flips up with a one-handed latch to allow more cargo space. The Tundra is equipped with Toyota’s advanced display audio system with AM/ FM Radio, CD, MP3/WMA

Cuddle up and enjoy a variety of family reads A GOOD READ Dana Ionson Read of snow days, hungry mice and magic in the forest

T

his winter, take some time to read aloud with your family. Get bundled up and enjoy books together with your youngsters. Here are a few suggestions for families to enjoy: • Big Snow by Jonathan Bean: Big Snow is a picture book about a boy who likes snow. The books starts with the boy dragging his sled on the bare lawn. When it starts snowing, he wonders if it will stick. When it starts to stick, he wonders if it will pile up. Big Snow clearly captures the anticipation of waiting for snow to fall and the excitement when it does. The illustrations beautifully contrast the warmth of inside during a winter’s day and the heavy grey sky when snow is threatening to fall. A great read for toddlers and preschoolers, getting excited for snow. • Young Fredle by Cynthia Voigt: For as long as the little mouse Fredle can remember, he has lived in a nest in the wall. At night, he and his family venture out into

the kitchen to find food. He likes foraging with his cousin Axel the best — she is not afraid of anything and is always looking for adventure. One night, Fredle and Axel find the most delicious treat. They eat until they are sick. Fredle is so sick that he can’t get out of his nest the next day. When mice are sick, they are kicked out of the nest, where they can’t spread their illness to the rest of the colony. Left in the kitchen during the day, Fredle is soon discovered by the woman who lives in the house. Instead of killing him, the woman puts Fredle outside. The outside world is larger and more beautiful than anything Fredle has imagined — more dangerous, too. What will Fredle do out here? Where can he find food? This wonderful adventure story is a great choice for kids aged five

to eight years who want to know more about the animals among us. • That Boy Red by Rachna Gilmore: Elevenyear-old Red MacRae lives on Prince Edward Island with his family. The Depression has hit the island hard but the MacRaes always have enough to eat. Red doesn’t mean to cause trouble but sometimes he can’t help it. Like when he got in a fight at school because his friend called his sister (also the teacher) a bad name. Another time, when Red was heading out fishing, his younger sister Bunch followed him into the woods. When Red discovered her, he told her to go home — never mind that she couldn’t find her way back. But when Red’s father is hurt cutting wood, Red has to try his best to help his family. That Boy Red is a great story for anyone longing for a simpler time and place. Each chapter can stand alone — perfect for picking up and reading whenever there is time. • Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu: Hazel doesn’t fit in. Her imagination and sense of wonder used to be praised by her teachers at the private school she attends. But when her mom and dad get divorced, they can no longer afford to

send her there. Now she has to go to the public school, where she has trouble sitting still and paying attention. Luckily, her best friend Jack goes to the same school. They play made-up games like superhero baseball at recess. Then Jack stops being nice to Hazel. Hazel’s mother says that sometimes in the fifth grade, boys don’t want to be friends with girls anymore. Hazel suspects there is something more to Jack’s behaviour. When Hazel hears a strange story about Jack going into the woods with a witch, Hazel knows she’s the only one who can save him. Hazel’s quest takes her into a mysterious other world. A beautiful blend of realism and fantasy, Breadcrumbs is a great read for anyone who thinks there is more to our world than we can see. Breadcrumbs is also available as an audiobook for anyone taking a road trip this winter. Warm up this winter by reading books as a family. Stop by the library for more suggestions of great books to read aloud.

Step out of the winter cold and warm up to the Latin beat at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre on Dec. 31. The Hot Salsa Dance Zone — better known as Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler — is once again hosting a New Year’s Eve fiesta in the facility’s rehearsal room, featuring a free dance lesson for newcomers as well as performers at the 10 p.m. intermission and champagne at midnight. Szefler said participants need not be shy about not knowing how to sway their hips or move their feet as the one-hour class will offer the basics to salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia and cha-cha-cha. “We just want everybody to come out and give it a try,”she said. see WARm up, page 26

hen Coquitlam violist Reg Quiring talks about certain compositions, it’s as if you can almost hear the music running through his head. That’s because he speaks in such detail — and with such passion — about classical music. Take, for example, the last work he, his wife and their guests will perform at the sixth annual QuiRING in the New Year at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre on Dec. 31: Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Opus 44. Quiring calls it a “powerful piece” and launches into it with such vigor that you can feel its entire flow. “The first movement has these really romantic melodies that are so joyous,” he says. “It’s got a lot of energy and buoyancy.” But the second movement brings a darker tone with a funeral march, a juxtaposition from the opening. “Then it goes in and out of these dreamlike opposites — kind of like Schumann was, like having these two characters in his mind, going back and forth,”he says. The third movement, a Scherzo, “is famous for musicians fearing they’re going to fall apart because it’s very fast but it’s also optimistic and energetic,”he says. And the finale is similar to the first in its lyricism; however, it also has “a tricky fugue and everything stops. The piano starts with another

fugue and it’s really powerful. Each instrument follows for the moving end that’s big and great.” But while Quiring’s enthusiasm about the music is evident, he won’t be the star of the New Year’s Eve show to offer background or history nuggets for the audience. Quiring and his pianist wife, Rosemary O’Connor, have left that to Leah Roseman, an Ottawa-based violinist who once played in the Quebec Symphony with Quiring. Currently, Roseman is with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, performs with the Gruppetto Baroque Ensemble and the Silflay String Quartet. Roseman will be starting the QuiRING concert with Mozart’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in B-flat, K454, with O’Connor. She will be joined on stage for the second composition, Haydn’s Opus 20 No. 4 Quartet, by Quiring and siblings Andrew Luchkow (cello) and Angela Malmberg (violin). Afterward, the quintet will wrap up the evening a whimsical arrangement of Auld Lang Syne and a champagne reception. “It’s going to be a night to remember,” Quiring said, noting past QuiRING concerts have been soldout. • Tickets for QuiRING in the New Year at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 are $38/$34/$15 through the Evergreen Cultural Centre box office at 604927-6555 or online at evergreenculturalcentre.ca. jwarren@tricitynews.com

Alberto Gonzalez and his partner Teresa Szefler.

Warm up with the Latin beat continued from page 25

Gonzalez will be working the tunes at the DJ table for the six hours. “We’ve got all the popular Latin music,” the Mexican City native said. “It’s lots of fun and lots of energy. And we’ll have the disco ball going, too.” The party is the largest in the Coquitlam Centre area and tends to attract about 100 participants from Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley — many of them with no partner, Szefler said. “Everybody is welcome.” In the past, their students have also hit the dance floor to show their new moves. The pair teaches Latin dancing at Evergreen on Thursdays and Sundays, in Surrey on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and in New Westminster on Fridays (they also have a Latin dance party on the first and third Saturday of every month at Evergreen). For New Year’s, “it’s always a good mix who shows up,” said Gonzalez, a professional dance instructor for 14 years. “You see people who have been dancing all their lives next to people who have never tried it before.” Before heading out, Szefler recommends dancers wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes to boogie. But“dress to impress! It’s NewYear’s Eve,”she said. • Tickets to the New Year’s Eve Latin Dance Party 2014 are $30 before Dec. 26 by calling 604-725-4654 or emailing info@hotsalsadancezone.com (entry is $40 at the door). The event is licenced and parking is free but limited due to the Evergreen Line construction. Visit hotsalsadancezone.com. jwarren@tricitynews.com

Sparks-Guest ready to take game to next level By Dan Ebenal The Tri-CiTy News

When Denver SparksGuest is ready to move on to the next level, he doesn’t have far to go. The 6’5” guard with the Gleneagle Talons has committed to attend Simon Fraser University next fall. “I selected SFU because I really like the coaching staff there and it’s just so close to home,” said Sparks-Guest, who plans to study kinesiology to prepare him for a future career as a physical therapist. He describes himself as a well-rounded player who can do multiple things and play many positions. “I can score and create for my teammates. My size helps me stay in front of smaller guards and match up physically with forwards,” he said. “Next season I want to come to SFU, improve my game and set the

tone for the next four years. Winning is the goal.” And SFU coach James Blake is already certain he can find a spot for Sparks-Guest in the Clan lineup. “Denver is a big strong guard that can get to the rim and score the ball in a number of ways,” said Blake. “He can step out and shoot it from deep and has a great future in the NCAA. Denver will be able to step in and play right away as a freshman because of his size and strength.” But for now, SparksGuest is devoting his focus to the Talons, currently ranked fourth among B.C.’s AAAA high school teams. “We have a great team this year so hopefully we can win provincials if we get our stuff together,” he said. “I think there’s just a different atmosphere with our team this year. Everybody is more fo-

cused on winning.” Sparks-Guest says he doesn’t have any single player he models his game after. “I model my game after what Tony Scott wants me to be,” said Sparks-Guest, adding Scott has coached him since he was in sixth grade and playing with a club team. “He’s helped me develop my skills to become a guard and even helped me become a better person.” The SFU coach also had a lot of praise for Sparks-Guest’s high school coach. “Coach Tony Scott has done a great job with Denver’s skill and strength development. He is a very unselfish player that understands team basketball.” Scott sees a bright future for Sparks-Guest and is confident he can help lead the Clan to many successful seasons. “He is only scratching

the surface of what he can do with his size and skill set. He is willing to do whatever it takes to become a contributing member of the team,” said Scott. Sparks-Guest credits playing with Team BC at this year’s Canada Summer Games as a major boost in his development as a player and hopes to refine his skills and become even more of a complete player over the course of his final year at Gleneagle. When asked about his hobbies off the basketball court there is a long pause. “Other than basketball… I’m trying to think… It takes up a lot of my time,” said SparksGuest, who does admit he hasn’t been shooting as many hoops on his driveway in recent weeks. “It’s been a bit too cold to shoot outside. So I’ll just go down to the rec centre.” sports@tricitynews.com

Coquitlam rinks aim for junior title A pair of Coquitlam rinks will be in the hunt for junior curling titles this week. Team Habkirk and Team Egan, out of the Coquitlam Curling Centre, will be among the 16 teams that take to the ice for the B.C. Junior

Curling Championship Chilliwack Curling Club from Dec. 26-31. The Habkirk rink — made up of skip Kyle Habkirk, third Ryan Harbrink, second Kevin Harbrink and lead Kento Sato — includes three members of the

gold-medal team at the 2013 Tim Hortons B.C. Juvenile Championships. On the junior women’s side, Port Coquitlam’s Briana Egan skips the rink of third Caitlin Campbell, second Janice Pang and lead Angelique Miller.

Vanessa Gee moves the ball up court for the Riverside Rapids. The Port Coquitlam guard will play next year for SFU.

Gee joins long list of Rapid recruits Po r t C o q u i t l a m ’ s Riverside secondary is quickly becoming a factory for SFU’s women’s basketball program. Vanessa Gee is the latest from the Rapids’ roster to be making a jump to Simon Fraser. She will join former high school teammates Michelle Spacek and Fiona Beales when the Clan opens the 2014/15 NCAA season. “I think that the biggest strength that I will bring to the Clan is my positive attitude,” said Gee. “I am very optimistic and I think that I bring a calming and level influence to my teammates when the chips are down.” Gee, a 5’7” guard, has three years of Basketball BC provincial team experience, most recently at the under-17 level. “Vanessa is a quick guard with an excellent first step. She goes by people with ease and has good finish in the lane,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford.

“Vanessa has a unique sense of humour and will fit in nicely with our girls. She responds well to constructive criticism and is a good listener.” If Langford needed any more insight on Gee, he could just ask his younger brother Paul, the senior girls coach at Riverside. “Vanessa is a great kid and will have to improve her game to make an impact but I think she is ready for the challenge,” said the Riverside coach, adding Gee is the fifth Rapid player to make the jump to SFU. But before heading off to SFU, Gee must complete her Grade 12 year at Riverside. And there is nothing she’d rather do than finish her high school career with a provincial title for the Rapids, currently ranked sixth in B.C. “Being part of the Clan will help me hone my basketball skills and knowledge allowing me to take my game to the

Wilson Centre Dental Clinic

next level. I want to develop into a more complete player and playing with this extremely talented group of players will help me do just that,” said Gee. “I am very excited to be coming to SFU and

playing basketball with an amazing team and coaching staff. I will be getting great basketball and academic experience as well as the bonus of competing in the NCAA and I can’t wait.” sports@tricitynews.com
