lack Press reporter Kyle Wells recently had the chance to sit down with Santa and ask him some questions about what the holidays mean to him and how he celebrates.
CONSERVE & SAVE WITH NATURAL GAS
Q: Have you had any unusual requests this year? A: There was one girl that all she wanted was a Slap Chop and she recited the whole commercial. The dicer for making salads. “Because I want my family to be slimmer and eat better.” That’s all she wanted. My favourite little one is a little girl named Leah, and this is her fourth year visiting with Santa, and she averages about 16 visits in four weeks. She just comes in, we cuddle for about 90 seconds, she gets a candy cane, gives me a kiss on the cheek and off she runs. She just loves Santa. It’s so heartwarming.

Vision Matters Dr. Neil Paterson
Healthy Eyes. Doctor Delivered.
TV and Vision
Eye care experts generally agree: watching television will not harm your eyes or vision if the TV room is lit properly and if you follow a few viewing tips. In fact, there is usually less strain involved in TV viewing than in doing close work such as sewing or reading. Watching TV for long stretches of time can leave your eyes fatigued and now that the monsoons have arrived, most of us are spending more time inside. Here are a few hints to help make TV viewing more comfortable.
TV viewing tips: - Make sure your television set is properly installed and the antenna properly adjusted. - Place the set to avoid glare reflections from lamps, windows and other bright sources. - Adjust brightness and contrast controls to individual and/or viewer’s taste and comfort. - Have the set at approximately eye level. Avoid having to look up or down at the picture. - Avoid staring at the screen for lengthy periods Briefly look away from the picture, around the room or out the window. - Wear lenses prescribed for vision correction, if advised to do so by your eye care practitioner. - View from a distance of at least five times the width of the television screen. Some viewers, especially those over 50 years
old, may find relief with special glasses for television viewing. Consult with your Optometrist if you find general vision discomfort or eye strain while watching TV.

OUR VIEW
Christmas Day: a time for peace Three words often come to mind at this time of year: joy, love and peace. Christmas is a time of rest for most, a time when the pace of non-retail business slows, schools shut down and the joy of socializing is more at the forefront. Even those folks who find themselves working over the holidays – thank goodness for them – usually gain a compensating peaceful break elsewhere in their schedules. For people in our communities who have few assets, are at risk of homelessness, or have no family or friends to dine with, Christmas dinners held at Our Place, the Rainbow Kitchen, Glad Tidings Church and other venues can be a source of loving comfort, not to mention a solid meal. We are often reminded at this time of year of the British and German soldiers who, on Christmas Eve in 1914 during the First World War, set aside their rifles and joined together for a day of carolling and merry-making on the Western Front. They knew in their hearts that peace was what they were truly seeking, the chance to leave anger, impatience and self-centredness behind, at least for a brief time. We are encouraged to do so today and take a few moments to smile at or chat with our neighbours, offer a kind word or smile to the beggar on the street corner who seldom receives them, do something out of the ordinary that shows we care about others. That was the message the namesake of this special day was attempting to get across, and one that people of all faiths or beliefs can agree on and practice. Even when it seems tough to muster up a smile or a compliment, finding the strength to do so, as literary character Ebenezer Scrooge found out so profoundly, never ends badly. So whatever your plans for Dec. 25, try to remember that joy, love and peace are available within you, not just now, but all through the year. What do you think? Give us your comments by email: editor@vicnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. All letters must have a name and a telephone number for verification.

Santa’s reindeer safe in Oak Bay Dear Editor, Santa has had many visits to the Village of Oak Bay and some have expressed concern for the safety of my reindeer. I know there are some misconceptions about how healthy and resilient my sleigh reindeer really are. For instance, did you know that not one of Santa’s reindeer has ever been injured and not one has ever come down with a cold, flu or sickness? Santa, of course, is not a scientist, but what I am about to tell you is what I have seen with my own eyes. In early November, the polar winds begin to howl and the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) increases to such a high intensity that the air is truly electrified and super-charged so much you can hear the crackling above the howling of the wind. This is when the Peary Caribou gather into a very large herd and face directly into the wind. The swirling of the snow and the glare of the aurora make it difficult to see the reindeer, but I can see a few moving their antlers slowly up and down and left to right. And when the wind is at its strongest, a reindeer will pop up out of the cloud of blowing snow and take flight. The first thing a new flying

Santa talks to Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen about reindeer safety during the Oak Bay Light up. How does Santa protect his reindeer and sleigh when we land to deliver the presents and eat our favorite treats – cookies and milk for Santa and carrot or apple for the reindeer? The first thing you should know is the sleigh and reindeer are never left alone or unguarded. Santa always has an elf looking after his sleigh and reindeer. HO HO HO, Merry Christmas to all. reindeer will do is slowly fly into the aurora then turn around and fly back continuing to fly back and forth until they change colour and are glowing from head to foot. After the winds and aurora return to normal, some of the glowing reindeer will be selected to pull Santa’s sleigh. Santa does not know exactly what makes the flying reindeer invincible. I am certain the polar winds and aurora are important factors.

While many are wishing joy to the world, others are struggling to get through the holidays with their mental health intact. The season can bring up sad memories, sparking depression and anxiety. Expectations to spend time with sometimes fractured families and be in good cheer can also be stressful. Financial worries also play their part. “It’s almost a cliché that Christmas is stressful,” said Ragnhild Flakstad, of the Victoria branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. One in five Canadians experiences mental health issues, meaning odds are someone sitting around your Christmas table is struggling with the season. The CMHA offers a list of tips to help people get through the holidays. It recommends planning ahead, staying within a budget, learning stress-busting skills and other strategies to approach the season with as much ease as possible. All I wanted in 1989 Christopher Sun News staff
In 1989, the Oak Bay Star (which became the Oak Bay News) published a number of Dear Santa letters and Christmas-related writings by Monterey Elementary school Grade 3 students. We contacted a few of them now in their 30s to see if they remembered what they wrote, if they received what they asked Santa for, and what they are up to now. On the night of Christmas, Christmas Eve, when a little elf named Little Steve, comes down the chimney with a bag of goodies, you greet him with some milk and cookies. Then down the chimney came good old Saint Nick, carrying a candy cane for you to lick, then back up the chimney up on the roof, you can hear all the reindeer clicking their hoof. Maia Green Green doesn’t remember writing the poem and reacted with laughter hearing it repeated. “That is hilarious,” Green said, adding she moved to Fiji for four years shortly after. “I should have followed a career in writing.” Instead, Green pursued a career in environmentalism. She started the Bowker Creek rubber duck race and clean-up when she was a Grade 10 student at Oak Bay High and graduated from UVic with a degree in environmental studies. She lives in Victoria and is founder and chair of FUN Society, a charity that educates young people about the environment. Dear Santa, May I please have some old hockey or baseball cards and some goalie pads for hockey. May my dog have a bone, toys and a blankey. And for my brother some posters, please. I’m not sure what my Mom and Dad want. Love from your friend, Scott Naysmith PS. Know [sic] underwear please. Naysmith didn’t recall his letter either, but felt confident that he did get what he asked for. “I’m pretty sure my wishes were met, my parents were pretty good that way,” Naysmith said. “I’m sure
I got goalie pads. I remember I had some at some stage when I was younger.” Naysmith chuckled about his warning to Santa about underwear and figured he must have received some the previous Christmas. The 32-year-old recently finished his PhD from the London School of Economics where he studied infectious diseases. His research has taken him to places such as South Africa and Indonesia. He lives in Toronto. Dear Santa: Can you please bring me Nintendo and I won’t play it all the time. I will only play it on the weekends. Can I please have My Pet Monster? I will sleep with him all the time. Can I please have the golden arrow and can I please have 24 packs of hockey stickers. Please and thank you. Your friend, Angus Kant Kant remembered having a Dear Santa letter published in the Oak Bay Star, his father is the former owner. “My Pet Monster I got and the hockey cards I got for sure,” Kant said. “I disobeyed that (playing Nintendo only on the weekends) for sure.” Kant now runs Party People Sound Solutions, a mobile DJ business and lives in Victoria.

Cold temperatures affect the motor oil’s ability to quickly start flowing through your engine. Switching to a full synthetic oil in the winter months provides you with the following benefit: • Better oil flow in cold temperatures • Quicker oil flow at cold start -up • Better resistance to breakdown in high temperatures • Tough oil film strength for severe conditions • Improved engine efficiency and fuel economy at low temperatures.
