esearch tells us that regular community newspaper readers are browsers who tend to read most of what is printed in this package delivered to their doors twice

weekly.

Internet readers are a different breed. A far higher percentage click on a webpage because they were looking for something in particular.

Readers clicked on cowichannewsleader.com pages more than 1.3 million times in 2013 and —predictably, perhaps — what often brought them there was tragedy.

These were cowichannewsleader.com’s most read stories of the past 12 months.

10) Tax watchdog and local businessman Scott Baker dead at 47 A Chemainus businessman, Baker became prominent during the 2011 municipal election when he ran a boisterous campaign to become the mayor of North Cowichan.

Friends and family remembered the outspoken, energetic man as one-of-a-kind after he was killed in a September accident while working at home.

9) Chief says giant garbage fires being snuffed, monitored Reams of black smoke billowing from an illegal garbage burn on Cowichan Tribes land south of the river raised the ire of local residents. The ire rose higher when it became clear the vagaries of the Indian Act meant authority over — and consequences for — the late June burn were not clear.

8) Duncan man dies in Thursday’s two-vehicle crash on Mill Bay Road A 49-year-old Duncan resident left a wife and child in mourning after his pick-up collided with a dump truck hauling a pup-trailer at the intersection of Mill Bay Road and Trowse Road in July.

7) Hockey-jersey memorial planned after Caleb Kroffat, 11, dies at Cowichan Arena Panic, bafflement and an outpouring of grief

This early-July hay fire in North Cowichan may have resulted in one of the more interesting news photos of the year, but the story — or any story about fire — failed to crack the top 10 most-read list on cowichannewsleader.com this year. gripped the community when 11-year-old Caleb Kroffat unexpectedly collapsed and died in November outside the Cowichan Arena while attending a Cowichan Capitals game.

6) Tempers boil over after drive-through dispute at Tim Hortons coffeeshop A road-rage incident that began in the popular Mill Bay eatery’s drive-through, and ended with a sledge-hammer attack on a truck on the highway near the Cowichan Bay Road intersection, certainly had tongues wagging and heads shaking in November.

4) Appalled drivers watch as pooch beaten like a dog The initial April report of a little Boston terrier being punched and hurled into the ditch by a man on Cowichan Lake Road angered enough people that nearly 24,000 eventually signed a petition urging maximum punishment in the case.

3) Duncan becomes an American Cedar Cove during TV filming shoot The surprise entry on this list wasn’t even published in 2013. A June 2012 account of the filming of Hallmark’s Cedar Cove TV series in Duncan presumably makes this list thanks to a spark of Google searches when the movie hit

small screens a year later.

2) One driver has died after Wednesday’s crash on Highway 18 This ugly morning September collision on Highway 18 claimed the life of David Foote, 24, when his eastbound truck crossed the centre line and collided with a truck headed west on a fishing trip. The driver of the second truck, Charlie Newman, was seriously injured and remains on a difficult road to recovery.

1) Flagger from Duncan still in critical condition after being pinned by dumptruck A prominent roadwork project on Beverly Street turned tragic in October, when flagger Maggie Feeley was crushed by a dumptruck.

The 29-year-old mother later died from her injuries.

Public art funding unlikely to deliver on its promise Perspectives on 2013: Bureaucracy likely to squander opportunity

love art. I breathe art. My walls are crammed with art, all types of art, much of it local.

When I travel, every gallery is a reason to forget time.

I used to own a gallery in downtown Duncan.

Despite its tin-sheet barn wood appearance, inside it was a beautiful white box with a grid of cobbled-together overhead lights illuminating each piece of art on the walls and floor.

I gathered my favourite local artists and we took risks showing controversial and contemporary art that generated opinion, not always positive.

We had installations, and large sculptures, and radical metal art and sometimes, all shared the same room if the theme fit.

There was music and dance too; a classical quartet graced centre room during our grand opening. A small stage was assembled and quickly became another original home of Longevity John Falkner’s musical treats. Once the Montreal Jazz ballet cavorted amongst the art to the delight of local young

dancers.

I lament the loss of this space, not because it was my own, but because it was an important cultural space; a place where community gathered, shared, learned, experienced and had fun.

My gallery reincarnated a few years later when the Arts Council opened a gallery downtown.

It was a very cool space too. Small and

many-roomed, it quickly attained a reputation for great art openings and art that challenged the artist in all of us.

This public art space was short lived and came to an abrupt halt when the Cowichan Valley Arts Council reeled it back to the Island Savings Centre- Cowichan’s old community centre, where it resides to this day.

arts council is calling all artists and artist groups to the table to seek support for a return to the public trough, this time for ongoing annual funding.

Supposedly triggered by the demise of L.J.’s Duncan Garage Showroom, an emergency arts meeting was held to talk about recent and ongoing Cowichan arts woes.

It was only minutes into the meeting that the idea of public funding for the arts was dropped into participant’s laps.

There were a lot of artists and other art aficionados in the audience, many talked about the importance of public money for their art of choice but rarely mentioned the

importance that art had for the community.

Many others spoke passionately about art for art’s sake but their words often hung on supporting the idea of public money, to support their argument.

The Showroom’s demise was never mentioned.

Including all the arts under an ever-larger government umbrella would be a tight fit. Add the culture piece and we are now talking about everything we do in life, including shopping.

Finding, administering and sharing funding fairly amongst such a broad spectrum will likely be difficult, costly and probably not possible.

This is likely why many professional artists, who are the artistic backbone of the community, just do their own thing, independent of local arts organizations and government.

Some do very well and others struggle. How would we define each in the eyes of the funders?

Since most professional artists and artisans are really small businesses, a good argument could easily be made that they should not be recipients of public funding anyway.

Professional artists have enormous amounts of experience and need to be included in any discussions regarding the future of the arts in the valley.

It sounds like a beautiful thing, public money for arts, but my jaded eye sees more bureaucracy, more newsletters and more self-congratulations.

Once again, an idea short on planning but big on promised outcomes.

for a long time and so has the mix of commercial and residential that fosters foot traffic.

It is a recipe for disaster and the conflict in land use is at least partly responsible for the loss of lives.

Reserve lands split by a highway invites conflict and the fact of Joe’s death demonstrates the risks involved when community members attempt to live their lives across that highway divide.

The highway at James Street is an open invitation to conflict between people and cars. There is a high school on one side and fast food outlets on the other.

The Warmland residence is also a source of pedestrian traffic wishing to frequent fast food outlets on the opposite side of the highway.

It’s a wonder there hasn’t been a student meeting a tragic end at that location.

I doubt even several pedestrian overpasses would be the solution.

It’s human nature, I think, to take short cuts. The real solution is a highway bypass but that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

Perhaps we need periodic stepped up police enforcement of jaywalking laws to remind people to be careful, and continued visible speed limit surveillance.

icture a family man walking on the sidewalk along the highway strip in Duncan.

The man suddenly trips or stumbles and falls directly into the path of a passing car.

A loud thump is heard as the vehicle makes contact with the man, followed by the sounds of locked-up tires trying desperately to stop.

What had been a casual evening in town turned tragic as Warren Rogers lay critically injured on the road, comforted by the driver of the car as passersby frantically waited for the paramedics.

He was rushed to hospital and then whisked by helicopter to Victoria General Hospital, but he is gone within 24 hours.

Just a week earlier, Warmland resident Jimmy Galbraith came out on the losing end of a conflict with a motor vehicle at the north end of the highway strip near James Street.

He too was rushed to Victoria, but his injuries were so severe, and his condition complicated by suffering a heart attack during surgery, that a decision was made to allow him to pass peacefully.

Two months earlier, a bubbly teen of just 13 years died after being struck along that same high-

way strip, this time just south of Duncan.

Selina Natasha Joe was crossing the highway at the Boys Road intersection with a group of young friends in the wee hours of the morning but she didn’t make it.

According to police reports the young lady was alive and in considerable pain after the impact with a car and was being tended to by one of her friends when she and her friend were struck by another passing vehicle.

Joe was pronounced dead at the scene.

All of this is tragic for the people involved but is not terribly surprising. There may be small mercy in suggesting it could have been worse.

What are we supposed to expect when we mix the four-lane Island Highway with a busy commercial strip offering retail services on both sides, when we split the Cowichan Reserve lands forcing residents on both sides of the highway to face a risky crossing?

There are pedestrian signals at the three light-controlled intersections in the downtown area but it is common to see people darting across the highway anywhere from the Silver Bridge to James Street.

I confess to being one of those on rare occasions and I call myself an idiot for taking the risk.

Everything we know about town planning says you shouldn’t mix highway traffic with pedestrians.

But the highway has been there

The two men have arguably been the biggest names in country music for many years.

The likelihood of either of them coming to Duncan? Until recently, most residents of the valley would have considered that an impossibility.

But Wideglide Entertainment has clearly put Cowichan on the map and elevated huge tourist potential during the weekend of the SunFest country music festival at the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds by securing both men as headliners on back-to-back years, Jackson in 2013 and McGraw for Aug. 3 during SunFest 2014.

It’s a great coup for the area to get both men to play here. They naturally attract a huge following wherever they go and appeal to an all-ages audience, the exact thing SunFest has been striving for from the beginning.

The Merritt Mountain Music Festival reached its peak in 2005 with a record number of 148,000 attending the six-day event. But it’s been downhill ever since and it was cancelled in 2010, came back for 2011 and did not continue in 2012 due to weak ticket sales.

The Bass Coast Festival has basically replaced it at a new location in the Nicola Valley, but now features electronic music in a one-day festival on B.C. Day. Merritt once boasted a heavyweight lineup of country musicians, particularly in 2002 with Jackson, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood and Keith Urban all appearing.

It’s been said loudly enough this year by Shawnigan residents fighting South Island Aggregates’ permit to dump and treat five million tonnes of fuel-laced soil in its quarry off Stebbings Road.

Clearly, treating contaminated soil in a senstive watershed could be a recipe for Cowichan’s largest environmental disaster since Crofton pulp mill’s polluting ways of the 1970s and ‘80s.

It boils down to which science you believe: SIA’s studies explaining safeguards, under

Our Environmental Appeal Board is tasked with mulling SRA’s appeal of SIA’s permit.

To the EAB’s credit, it granted a stay on importing and dumping soil in SIA’s pit until after the formal appeal.

But that reprieve will be cold comfort if the permit sticks.

It was OK’ed by senior ministry bureaucrat Hubert Bunce after reading data from both sides.

Bunce also read 300 letters from residents demanding the permit not be granted.

Then he sadly approved it, missing the chance to legally nix SIA’s scheme.

Folks fear drinking and bathing water will be fouled, along with Shawnigan Lake’s ecology, amid sinking property values.

Hope shines from a Supreme Court ruling, requested by the Cowichan Valley Regional District, about if Victoria granted SIA’s permit without properly considering CVRD zoning.

But zoning arguments didn’t stop the ministry’s permit for treating dirty dirt in the Evans gravel pit off Koksilah Road a few years back.

The CVRD should have played its SIA zoning card far earlier than two months ago.

Cowichan’s other contaminated sites include one off the Malahat, where the CVRD won a court ruling ordering the landowner to remove the mess.

But there’s been no police enforcement. No arrests, or fining of offenders.

Now residents rightly suspect phantom trucks dumping waste — including construction debris — in Cowichan.

The Warm Land has become The Dump Land to some people.

Think of the SIA permit appeal as an ecoAlamo. If the SRA loses, all Cowichanians should walk the walk of protest to protect our environment.

Some have promised to block dump trucks.

Those promises could come due in 2014.

Last time I checked, the Kinsol is the largest wooden trestle in Canada, right? So you’d think it’d befit something that isn’t brown and smaller than a crosswalk sign (read: blink and you’ll miss it).

The local production made news earlier this year when it racked-up a few thousand views within days of its release.

Everyone apparently loves, loves, loves it, that is except for me and the 59 others who clicked the “thumbs down” button on YouTube. It’s a slick, Perspectives on 2013: Schools reeled as our well-done professional piece, kids took a backseat to the bottom line but there’s just a bit too much funk on that cheese for my Maeve Maguire tastes.

ou wonder how often a dog is brutally killed, beaten, starved, left in the cold, or heat in a car in the middle of summer.

You hate to think about it.

But unfortunately it does happen. And most of the time it happens with little to no public attention at all.

That is not the case in an alleged animal abuse incident witnessed by a Cowichan couple on Cowichan Lake Road April 21.

That sad story of a local man punching a Boston terrier/French bulldog cross three times in the head before flinging the dog into a ditch was first shared on Facebook by witnesses Chris and Leigh Davies.

Their post was viewed 22,000 times and was shared by 345 folks.

A petition was created shortly afterward.

Nearly 24,000 people signed, urging strict consequences for the accused Duncan’s Brandon Harrison, who recently pleaded not guilty to all charges.

With the B.C. SPCA claiming it conducts more than 7,000 animal cruelty investigations every year, you have to wonder why

this particular case has gained so much attention.

Was it because the witnesses that day, the Davies, happen to be huge dog lovers, owning two very beautiful pooches themselves? Because they’re also fairly well-known in the community and aren’t afraid to be vocal?

Sure, that’s probably part of it.

But I’d say most of the community reaction, as well as that from folks across Canada, has a lot to due with the description witnesses reported of blatant cruelty to a small, helpless animal.

It makes me and probably every single follower of the story wonder what is happening to this tiny dog when people aren’t around?

Most folks who read the News Leader Pictorial’s initial account were also probably struck by the way the Davies said the accused acted when approached that day.

“He said, ‘I’ll f---ing kill you if you dial 9-11,” Davies recalled Harrison said to his wife.

As a result of that, Harrison is also facing charges of criminal harassment and uttering threats.

True or not — and it must be stressed we have only heard one side of this story and Harrison remains innocent of all charges until proven guilty — there is no doubt the

Presenting the Cowichan Genies for the best stage productions of 2013

The best part of this year’s Genie awards, cheering stage shows that entertained Cowichanians, is the impressive efforts of local amateurs and student actors.

Albertine In Five Times, Into The Woods, Hairspray, and Twelfth Night

were mounted by non-professionals in our midst, offering dramatic art that competed with that of professional performers as one of 2013’s best stage acts.

This isn’t a new phenomenon. Past years too were packed with notable local shows.

All the more reason to expect quality bang for your theatre buck, not just when seeing a visiting star at the Cowichan or Chemainus theatre, but when watching locals work at one of our many excellent smaller venues.

Musical: Singing’ In The Rain

Hollywood spends millions recreating what Chemainus Theatre did for far less: make the magic of Vaudevillian romance come alive.

That elusive illusion happened during the debut of Singin’ In The Rain, perhaps Cowichan’s most daring display of dance yet. True, other shows boasted sweeping choruses of great choreography.

But Rain director Tracey Power’s cast plugged into more intimate, near-animated footwork. That talent was exemplified by Jonathan Purvis’ Cosmo Brown, whose jaw-dropped moves stunned viewers during Make ‘Em Laugh.

Shakespeare: Twelfth Night July 26, Gem ‘O The Isle B&B

Twelfth Night delightfully fell again in Cowichan with Shawnigan Players’ outdoor staging of Shakespeare’s cheeky comedy-romance.

Its run at tranquil Gem O’ The Isle B&B deserved its standing ovation as director Alex Gallacher — returning as Malvolio after bard@brentwood’s 2007 version — and his cast used a bare wooden stage, period costumes, and swords to slice into raucous high jinks.

Twelfth Night complemented the Players’ 2012 Gem of a hit, Pride and Prejudice — both plays are perched on romance, comeuppances, and downfalls filtered through exemplary dialogue.

Drama: Albertine In Five Times May 24, Duncan Garage Showroom

Set a side your troubles and listen to Albertine’s.

Your issues may pale beside playwright Michel Tremblay’s lifelong suffering mother and wife — whose pain is potentially shared by everyone — depicted in Shawnigan Players’ penetrating return of Albertine In Five Times.

Director Alex Gallacher’s allfemale cast hit a homer during its staging of Albertine, after a three-month hiatus.

Viewers had nowhere to hide in a darkened Duncan Garage Showroom where an elderly Albertine (Leslie Sanchez) left her rocking chair and summoned her past selves, at various ages of adulthood.

Four former Albertines appeared, sat on simple black boxes, and discussed the trials and complex tribulations of their anguished life.

Evil Von Rothbart’s hex seemed to vex Cowichan Theatre’s sound system during Ballet Jörgen’s lavish Swan Lake.

Act-one’s computer glitch cut music to the stage stacked with a cunning cast that made local artistic history by continuing to dance in silence during the

rare technical gap.

It left the crowd dangling as if in suspended animation during an unforgettable 55 seconds.

It seemed an eternity to Ed Lazenby, the theatre’s parttime soundman, who saved the show by staying calm and amazingly restoring the music at the right place.

Dancing bears, lion tamers and prancing elephants were thankfully nowhere in sight during this stunning visit by the shimmering ShangriLa Chinese Acrobats.

The masters of balance, agility and illusion didn’t need those tepid circus acts.

Instead, Cowichan Theatre viewers got a breathtakingly colourful, cultural education they won’t soon forget.

The rapidfire show of strength and grace, by Ken Hai’s 14-member troupe, sprayed the senses during two hours of spectacular stunts.

Hairspray would be a good play just for its sets, songand-dance numbers, comedy, and rock ‘n’ roll.

But Shawnigan Lake School’s lively version became great with its marvelous messages about love and equality beating hate and bigotry during its Cowichan Theatre premiere.

Director Gregg Perry, band leader Shannon Tyrrell, choreographer Samantha Currie, and costumier Norma Bowen led a dazzling cast of many colours in this ‘60s Broadway hit soaked in social symbolism.

Political: The Arrows Of Desire Sept. 12, Duncan Garage Showroom

Actor John Nolan’s reincarnation of Tommy Douglas is must viewing for all Canadians.

Especially those who naively ask “Who’s Tommy Douglas?”

But once they get sick, old, or jobless, they might be interested to know Tommy gave us universal medicare — sadly now under attack by private care — unemployment insurance, and our pension plans.

But viewers put the feisty NDP leader and Nanaimo-Cowichan’s MP’s accomplishments aside, drinking in Nolan’s depiction of a common guy who fought hard for the average person overtaxed and under-served by bland bureaucracy.

Youth: Into the Woods Dec. 6, T. Gil Bunch Theatre

We thought it was safe to go back Into The Woods, before act two. Then Chalkboard Theatre viewers in the T. Gil Bunch theatre had sober second thoughts about happily ever after being so happy.

Stiff misgivings about finding love, security and fulfillment — without guilt, regret and greed — honeycombed one of Cowichan’s best independent-youth plays in years.

Directors Tilly Lorence and Michelle Tremblay, plus musical director Laura Cardriver, steered two-dozen adept actors through the demanding existential musical on James O’Leary’s multi-dimensional set.

A huge stage page pulled from psychologist Carol Jung’s red book was perfect for illustrating James Lapine’s story, backed by Stephen Sondheim’s near-operatic tunes.

The issue isn’t spending, it is how and why we spend

eople love to talk about money.

In 2012, government spending was a hot-button issue in Cowichan, especially with the $1.3 million communication crack-up known affectionately as the Eco Depot.

In 2011, some residents started trash talking civic building expansions, dubbing the $3 million needed to create more space in North Cowichan municipal hall, excessive. Some thought it an unnecessary expenditure, especially to fit the ballooning number of bureaucrats making high wages.

So it was no surprise 2013 saw more of the same. The mantra of too much spending of hard-earned tax dollars is so often heard, it has

become a staple that’s no longer questioned but accepted as truth.

And each year the spending continues. And each year people complain.

I’m not saying there isn’t good reason for it, either.

This year we learned the top CVRD bureaucrat’s salary was higher than B.C. Premier Christy Clark’s, and that 34 senior staff earned wages above $75,000 annually.

If this is what we have to do to offer competitive wages to the private sector, then let’s stop competing with the private sector.

Farther up the road, another round of proposed tax increases in North Cowichan raised the ire of some residents and councillors.

Of course, some of the head-in-sand arguments against this year’s wish for a 1% tax increase for the Climate Energy and Action Plan are ridiculous, but expected from the more bombastic opponents who fancy themselves fiscally responsible.

It was once again spun as economics versus environment, which the majority of us are learning is simply not the case.

So why are we surprised when the officials we elect — our neighbours, our colleagues, our peers — are not automatically gifted when it comes to managing money?

I know I didn’t vet the bank accounts of any of the potential politicians I voted for.

I voted on their values, their beliefs and the direction they wanted to take the community.

If managing money were easy, we’d all be rich.

But sometimes it isn’t the spending that is the important part. It’s the values that we’re trying to reach.

Yes, people love to talk about money. But that doesn’t mean we understand how to use it for what it is meant, making our community stronger.

This year it was clear there is a disconnect between the cost of our values and where we think that money should come from.

What baffles me most in this back-and-forth between perceived wanton spending and belt-tightening at the expense of services is the lack of awareness that the average resident has when it comes down to a topic that is ostensibly deemed so important: money.

In mid-December, on the heels of reports that the ratio of household debt to disposable income was reaching record highs, the Bank of Canada came out and said the biggest threat to our country’s economy is the money we owe as individuals.

For every dollar we earn, we owe $1.64. I’m no Archimedes but that doesn’t seem like a formula for getting ahead.

When it comes to managing our cash, the majority of Canadians are more attracted to the spending than to the saving side of the ledger.

There could be many reasons for this, but I’d like to propose one of the biggest is we simply don’t get it.

Environmental approach shows alarming inconsistencies Perspectives on 2013: North Cowichan protects with one hand, while it threatens with the other Robert Douglas

I

n decades past, the Municipality of North Cowichan didn’t exactly set the bar in terms of environmental protection and sustainable forms of development.

But in recent years, there has clearly been a shift. It was only two years ago that North Cowichan updated its Official Community Plan, introducing a very progressive document that outlines a long-term vision for the municipality, with a strong focus on guarding the environment and adjusting to climate change.

And earlier this year, North Cowichan took another step forward, adopting the Climate Action and Energy Plan, a blueprint for reducing our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during the coming years.

The Climate Action and Energy Plan recently won a top award at the annual convention of the Union of B.C. Municipalities, in the category of community planning and development. And it was well-deserved.

A visionary document, the Climate Action and Energy Plan charts how we can develop our land and resources in a more sustainable manner while at the same time building a more localized economy.

But just as our region’s largest municipality has taken a big step forward on the environmental front, it may also be taking two steps back.

Only months after adopting the Climate Action and Energy Plan, North Cowichan applied to remove 1.8 hectares of land on Beverly Street from the Agricultural Land Reserve for a proposed RCMP building that will cost us approximately $8 million.

This move triggered a backlash from the community, as the parcel lies within the boundaries of the Somenos Marsh, an ecologically sensitive area that residents want protected from further residential and commercial development.

And just last month, North Cowichan voted to develop 20% of Echo Heights, a 52-acre Coastal Douglas-fir forest located in Chemainus.

This despite strong opposition from residents, who cite the forest’s

ecological and recreational value.

Both moves are clearly motivated by a desire to save money and generate new sources of revenue for the municipality.

North Cowichan anticipates saving more than $1 million by building the RCMP station on municipally owned land, and generating profits of $480,000 per year by sub-

diving Echo Heights and selling the lots in phases during the next decade.

The cost pressures North Cowichan and other local governments across Canada now face must be acknowledged.

But developing ecologically sensitive areas to address our immediate financial problems is not a wise approach in the long-term.

We can’t burn the furniture to heat the house — at least not for long.

North Cowichan needs to find new and

sustainable sources of revenue that will reduce the pressures to develop our natural spaces and continuously raise property taxes.

One municipality can’t address the issues of climate change and sustainable development on its own — these are global problems that will require concerted efforts from our major industrial powers.

But North Cowichan can certainly act as an example for the rest of the province — and the world for that matter.

And that starts with taking a more consistent approach with the environment.

Because we can’t have it both ways.

owichan’s Keith Johnny is exactly where he wants to be.

The former Cowichan Tribes street person has found a warm and welcoming environment he now calls home, at the Ts’i’ts’uwatel Lelum Aboriginal elders housing complex located on Allenby Road.

Although the four-storey building with 46 one-bedroom apartments and four two bedroom rooms was open for business about a year ago, the folks behind its creation celebrated its official grand opening Dec. 10.

The development, funded by governments of Canada and British Columbia as well as several community partnerships, including Island Health also features several amenities including a reception area, a dining room, crafts room, hair salon, TV room, lounge and kitchen and food prep areas.

“Welcome to my house, our house,” said Johnny during opening ceremony speeches among several dignitaries including M’akola Housing Society CEO Kevin Albers, new Cowichan Tribes Chief Chip Seymour, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliations John Rustad, CMHC BC’s Tom Siems, Duncan Mayor Phil Kent, and Island Health board chair Don Hubbard.

“I have a voice now and I can now reach out for help again,” Johnny said.

Through an amendment to the Canada - British Columbia Affordable Housing Agreement, the feds and provincial government contributed $13.5 million toward the project.

The total cost of the development, which has been in the works for the past 10 years, was approximately $14.7 million.

Established in 1984, the M’akola Housing Society is a non-profit organization which operates over 1,300 Aboriginal affordable housing units, primarily for Aboriginal people.

The society owns and manages the Allenby Road elders facility.

“For nearly 30 years, M’akola Housing Soci-

ety has been a committed Aboriginal affordable housing provider on Vancouver Island,” said its CEO Kevin Albers at the opening.

“We are pleased to bring our years of experience to support the elders and seniors who reside at Ts’i’ts’uwatel Lelum and we are thankful for the collaborative partnerships with Cowichan Tribes, our governments and community partners that made this building possible.”

owichan senior Nora Maxwell couldn’t have been more appreciative of Cowichan Camerata String Orchestra’s visit to Cairnsmore Place Saturday, Dec. 14.

“Violins play on the strings of your heart and they can play on the strings of your soul,” the 93-yearold told organizers after the show.

“We’re going to be playing violins in heaven.”

Residents filled up Cairnsmore’s decorated lounge to be serenaded by the Camerata’s private performance under the direction of Garth

Williams.

The orchestra played a variety of music including Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, Vivaldi’s Christmas Concerto Grosso, and, of course, tried and true Christmas songs such as It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and Sleigh Ride.

“One lady said that it was the first concert she had been to,” said Camerata’s Donna Hert. “The residents seemed to enjoy it and clapped enthusiastically with big smiles. Some did gently drift off to sleep, but then one of the carols, Twas in The Moon (Huron Carol) is more of a lullaby so it was perhaps a compliment to the orchestra’s rendition.

“The orchestra members were touched to hear one lady shout out

after one piece, ‘That’s good!’”

The private Cairnsmore Christmas concert was held during the Camerata’s regular Saturday morning practice time slot.

The Cowichan Camerata String Orchestra practiced at the seniors’ home’s beautifully decked out lounge. Many residents filled the room and several more sat just outside the doors to listen.

The group followed that session up with its regular public Christmas concert Dec. 20 at Duncan United Church.

The group offered folks the opportunity to sing Christmas carols accompanied by a string orchestra —an opportunity that doesn’t come along every day.

ake Cowichan’s Gerald Thom has just been declared the top lake steward in the province.

Thom, president of the Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society, was recently awarded the Lake Steward of the Year award.

The award is presented by the B.C. Lake Stewardship Society whose board nominates and then votes for the winning recipient.

“It would be selfish of me to say that it’s all for me because it’s not, it’s about our society and what we’re doing as a group.’’

BCLSS is a non-profit organization for groups interested in lake issues and lake stewardship.

CLRSS is a member with approximately 80 members of its own.

“This is only one component of what we do,” said Thom. “We do river clean-up and a whole pile of other things. We have a lot of volunteers who do a lot of good stuff.”

Thom agrees it’s important to bring in new, younger members to CLRSS all the time.

“It absolutely is important to keep bringing new people in and bring in youth because most of our membership at present, up until our cooperation with the high school, are 60 plus. So restoration work needs able young bodies.”

The society’s latest stint

is a revamp of Saywell Park.

CLRSS has just had a new set of plants delivered by Island-based native plant nursery, Streamside Native Plants, that will be planted within the park.

“The idea is to get rid of the blackberries, the invasive species, and replace them with native species so that we can improve the habitat value for fish, birds, frogs, salamanders and everything else.

“We’ve teamed up with the high school, the town and the department of fisheries and oceans, and we’re going to create a demonstration site there so if people want to see proper repairing and habitat, mixed with recreation like tubing, we’ve got a site showing people how to do it.”

Thom’s society also recently applied for a grant worth a third of $1 million during the next three years to bring demonstrations to private residences around the lake.

The 2009 Forester was offered in four trim levels; 2.5X, 2.5X Touring Package, 2.5X Limited and a 2.5XT Limited model with a turbocharged engine. Even a base Forester 2.5X comes well equipped with heated seats, air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, roof rails, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls.

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!”

Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby.

Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit.

Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive.

When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world.

While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. There are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6.

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time.

Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this.

Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations.

One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling.

In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6.

Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada.

Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),

There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials.

One area that could be improved is the

power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The

V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway.

Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission.

I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now.

Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

magine an organization which has donated funds for more than 65 consecutive years to support cancer patient care, research and equipment. Now imagine the commitment of thousands of members hosting socials and teas, bazaars, raffles and other fund-raisers, as well as giving freely of their time to meet their charitable goals.

According to Ruth Foster, Director of Cancer Activities for the O.E.S., “There are four categories of annual giving: educational bursaries, equipment, supplies and Cancer Dressings.”

Last year, $8,362.29 was collected from the sale of cancelled stamps and postcards throughout British Columbia and Yukon to be distributed for Cancer Research or Cancer Dressings, wherever it is needed. (We must thank our friends in the community for keeping us well supplied with stamps.)

Sunset Chapter #44, Duncan has one of our 39 Cancer Dressing Stations, located downstairs in the Mercury Theatre on Brae Road, Duncan.

Last year, throughout our jurisdiction, 170 dedicated members volunteered 8120 hours producing 69,708 cancer dressings at a cost of $9,599.91. (We’ve used up inventory on hand, which once again reduced expenses. There is a need for dressings in Northern BC, so these numbers will likely increase next year.)

Presently, sterilization is only being done by certain Hospitals and Clinics by trained and qualified staff in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna andd Prince George. The present method of distribution on is - the hospital staff will give the patient a supplyy of cancer dressings to take home. Local cancer patients requiring dressings are asked to contact the Canadian Cancer Society Office at 250-746-4134.

Cancer is a dreadful disease without the added burden of the expense of dressings often required.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE TO THE PATIENT. All that is required is a doctor’s referral.

By supporting our Stamp Project, attending bazaars and teas, the Cabaret Night or buying tickets on our annual Cancer Draw, you enable us to continue our efforts in the fight against cancer. We’ve had a Polar Swim each February since 2005, first at Transfer Beach in Ladysmith and starting this year, at Departure Bay in Nanaimo. Thanks to pledges/donations, the members willing to brave the chilly water, have raised over $50,000.00 for Cancer Projects.

blizzard hit the Island Savings Centre gym last Sunday.

The Blizzard racked up 12 goals to beat the Thunder 12-6 in the last of three Cowichan Indoor Hockey League games.

Chelsey Cleemoff did most of the damage with five goals while Sarah Cross and Taylor Wainman also played large parts in the team’s success with three apiece. The other marker came

from Amber Thomas.

Sam Ross had a hat trick in vain, veteran Cheryl McCreary notched a pair and Jenna Ellison added one for the Thunder.

The opening game of the day was a tight battle, with Lightning edging the Cyclone 4-3 on three goals by Maddie Smith. Brittany Smith scored all three goals for the Cyclone.

The middle game had Royal defeating Green 7-4. Four goals by Sara Goodman set the pace while Sara Lowes tallied twice and Gillian Wallace added a single.

Zurrer inspiration for the next high school phenoms

It all began in 2003 with the awarding of the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial’s Youth Athlete of the Year Award to Emily Zurrer, pictured.

The soccer star also won the award in 2004. She continues playing today on the national women’s team and got admitted to the North Cowichan-Duncan Sports Wall of

Fame last year.

There was no public banquet for the top youth athletes until 2009. Zurrer attended the 2011 luncheon at the Duncan Meadows Golf Club to speak to that year’s elite.

The invites have all been sent out for the next luncheon at Shawnigan Lake School when the best of 2013 will be honoured.

Picking the top 113+ of the year never an easy task

he process of narrowing the field of the valley’s youth athletes to a list of the top 113+ each year is a painstaking process.

I guess I’m a bear for punishment.

It all begins around early November when I send out emails to coaches and people in the know about the current high school crop of boys and girls who are not only excelling in their chosen sports, but also in the classroom. They also must be good sportsmen, dedicated and committed to their causes and so much more.

It’s a fine line at the very top where any of the athletes in the top 50 could really be scrambled and the order would still work. It all comes down to my final decisions and basing it on seniority — i.e., preference to the older athletes in Grades 11 and 12 — makes it only slightly easier to put the finishing touches on who should be placed where.

But there are always exceptions and exceptional Grade 10s and even Grade 9 and 8 students have been known to sneak into a high position well before their times.

The main objective is to give the community a sense of what great things our young people are doing in the world of sports. So many kids are putting so much time and energy into it, they don’t have time for much else when you tack on their school workload.

That’s why we go all out to recognize their achievements.

In this first installment of the best of 2013, we focus on No. 81 to 113 plus numerous honourable mentions.

This may be the lower end of the list, but these athletes are by no means average. When you consider the hundreds of kids not on the list, they’re all way above average.

Some of the athletes in this grouping are younger while others are older who deserve to be mentioned before they graduate from high school in June.

A few of the younger members of the Cowichan Secondary School senior girls’ field hockey team are among those filling out these positions, including goalkeeper Tara Eriksen, Sara Goodman, Kelsey Goodman and Beth Corish. All have additional years of eligibility remaining and will surely make a large advance next year.

Sara Goodman is only in Grade 9, but she’s a player. She doesn’t shy away from battling the older girls which will make her a talent to watch in the years ahead.

Youth Athlete of the Week

Lindsay Hodgins Three years is all it took for Duncan’s Lindsay Hodgins to become a world junior girls’ champion after starting in horseshoe pitching. The coveted title was won earlier this year in St. George, Utah. Grade 12 Cowichan Secondary School student Hodgins, who celebrated her 17th birthday Dec. 21, will have a chance to defend the title in 2014. The key to Hodgins’ success has been a rapid rise in ringer percentage. “It’s up to 63%,’’ she said. There were times when Hodgins first started she wondered if she’d ever be able to throw a ringer, never mind reach that high rate. “I hit the roof once,’’ she recalled of early mishaps. “If you can shoot 40, 45% you’re doing fairly good,’’ said grandfather Wayne Hodgins, who put Lindsay on the path to glory at the Victoria Horseshoe Club. “Right now, Lindsay is actually the highest person in B.C. — man, lady, anybody,’’ said Wayne. “If she was in the ladies’ group in the worlds which is the best there is, she’d be sitting about sixth in the world which is really unbelievable.’’ It’s all made a huge difference in helping Lindsay overcome autism. “The people I meet,’’ she said is the best part.
