Homeless forced to vacate Jubilee Park Judge grants city’s injunction to enforce move
Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Occupants of a homeless camp in Abbotsford were left wondering where they would move to next, after a B.C. Supreme Court judge on Friday granted the city an injunction to prohibit them from staying in Jubilee Park. “I don’t know how we’re going to (move our belongings) and where we’re going to go,” said Calvin Pete, one of four members of the camp who attended the proceedings at the New Westminster courthouse. He said there were about 30 people staying in the camp. Most don’t qualify to stay in shelters due to issues such as substance abuse, mental health concerns or pet ownership, Pete said. One of the group’s advocates, who identified himself as “Tiny,” was also critical of the judge’s decision, which gave the occupants until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21 to vacate the park and remove all their belongings. Failing to leave would make them trespassers, and the order could be enforced by police. “It’s a despicable thing to do before Christmas. There is no human aspect to this. How can you make a judgment like this on people who are just trying to survive?” Tiny said. Katherine Jeffcoat, communications director with the City of Abbotsford, said after the ruling that community service providers would be on site during the move, offering shelter and temporary storage for anyone who needed to store their

In granting the injunction, Justice James Williams agreed with city lawyers who presented evidence in court on Tuesday, Dec. 17 that the campers were breaking city bylaws by lighting campfires in the park, using drugs and alcohol, littering, getting involved in physical assaults and being confrontational Williams said the camp was impacting public use of the “community space” and
this superceded the inconvenience of having the occupants move to another location. He said the campers could relocate their tents or access shelters in the community. “I conclude that there will be places for them to go,” he said. Williams also granted an order relating to the wooden structure that was set up by concerned citizens, using donated
materials, in a city-owned parking lot next to Jubilee Park. The order required the structure to be dismantled by 2 p.m. Monday. Williams said the people who initially erected it could take it down and salvage the materials. If it wasn’t removed by the deadline, the city could dismantle it, but Williams cautioned this was to be done in a “nondestructive way.” Williams acknowledged that his decision was not an easy one because it impacted “marginalized” people. “At root, it is a profound social issue,” he said of homelessness. The injunction issued on Friday related only to Jubilee Park. The city’s application to enforce a ban on overnight camping in all parks will be dealt with as part of a trial for which a date has not yet been set. DJ Larkin, a lawyer with the Pivot Legal Society, which represented the Jubilee Park occupants at last week’s hearing, said the city’s bylaws are unconstitutional. Pivot will argue at the trial that Abbotsford does not have enough shelter space, particularly for people who are “hard to house,” and denying them the ability to shelter themselves in a safe space is a breach of their right to “life, liberty and security.” The Jubilee Park camp began Oct. 22, as a protest by members of the Drug War Survivors. They said they planned to remain until there was a housing solution for homeless people.

SPCA seized 14 animals from Abbotsford property Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A man accused of running a puppy mill in Abbotsford has been convicted of two charges in relation to the SPCA seizure of 14 dogs in September 2010. Mel Gerling was found guilty Dec. 10 in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and failing to provide necessities for an animal. Gerling was charged in May 2011, several months after the SPCA seized shih tzus, chihuahuas, pugs and terrier crosses from a property on Sumas Way in Abbotsford.
Children to be allowed in pubs
The B.C. government has uncorked another round of liquor law reform, with children to be allowed in pubs and restaurants allowed to serve drinks without food. Premier Christy Clark announced the changes Tuesday, as the provincial cabinet works
Become our friend ...
At the time, the SPCA said the dogs were not receiving proper protection from the elements and were suffering from a range of health issues, including badly matted fur, eye infections, dental disease and badly overgrown nails. All 14 dogs that were seized were adopted out by the agency. At the time the dogs were taken, Gerling blamed their condition on the man whom he said he was paying to care for them while two new kennel buildings were being constructed in Maple Ridge. Gerling’s trial on the matter began in April of this year. His sentencing hearing will take place at a later date.
its way through a list of 70 recommendations from a recent public consultation on updating B.C. liquor laws. Children are to be allowed to accompany their parents into pubs up until an evening curfew time, also yet to be determined, but Clark said it will
allow families to have lunch or dinner together at a pub. Restaurants with “food primary” licences will still have to offer a full menu when liquor is available, Clark said, “but customers who don’t want to order food shouldn’t be forced to do so...”

Family has been cultivating Christmas trees for decades Jason ROESSLE Abbotsford News
Buying a Christmas tree is an annual tradition for millions of families. And while each tree is unique, the sentiments it inspires are universal. The fresh, sweet smell permeates the room, evoking memories of Christmases past. Dense needles and strong branches support treasured ornaments, while rows of delicate lights create a festive visual display. But what did it take for that tree to arrive in the family room? It started with efforts by people like the Bouchirs, who have owned and operated a Christmas tree farm on their Hatzic Prairie property for decades. This year about 20 per cent of the family’s 1,000 trees went out the door by Nov. 21, a week earlier than normal. “Dec. 10 is about the latest that we’ll be selling to wholesalers, said Bryan Bouchir. And while the business is seasonal, the work involved is a yearround endeavour. It begins in January. Tree stumps are pulled and the soil is tilled across the eight fields, which encompass 12 acres. As March and April roll around, strings are run and trees are planted. “With three people we can usually plant [about 1,000 trees] in two days, said Bouchir, who works alongside his son John, and other members of the family. Larger farms have machines that can plant up to 4,000 trees a day. In spring, the trees are fertilized and the lowest branches of sufficiently mature trees are cut away, which promotes air circulation and creates a good base on which a tree stand can be affixed. Grass grows between the trees and is mowed
at least a couple of times a season. The fields are sprayed to stave off insect infestations. During July and August, the Bouchirs are trimming and pruning. “Each tree gets about four or five prunings throughout its life, he said. The average tree takes six to eight years to mature. After nine months of effort, inventory starts, and sales are set up with customers. “We cut as late as possible to ensure freshness, said Bouchir. The busiest time on the farm is between Nov. 26 and Dec. 5, when it’s non-stop cutting, mechanical shaking (to remove loose needles) and readying the trees
for pick-up. While the competitive threat has subsided over the past few years, trees grown and imported from the United States have sold to retailers for much cheaper than local producers can afford to sell. “In some cases, [the imported trees] are cut older, and in some cases they’re seconds. But some are decent. I can’t knock them all, said Bouchir, who is the president of the B.C. Christmas Tree Council, and the membership chairman of the Southwest B.C. Christmas Tree Association. Compounding the issue, according to Bouchir, B.C.’s 420 Christmas tree produc-
ers only grow about 85 per cent of the volume required to meet the demand. “Some stores are buying local trees, and I haven’t heard of any problems this year. In fact, he has heard of four U-cut Christmas tree operations in the Fraser Valley which have sold out this season. The Bouchirs have grown all varieties over the years, including Nobles, which are “the Cadillac of trees, said Bouchir. But mostly the farm is populated with Fraser firs. “They grow nice, and they hold their needles, he said. “My personal taste is that I like the Fraser firs better. They’re a more marketable tree.

Generosity is what makes the season
Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand Christmas, or at least the traditional appearance of it, courtesy of early holiday print deadlines, is happening as I write this. On what may be the only ‘snow day’ of this celebratory season there’s about 100 millimeters of the white stuff adorning my deck rail. Thanks to metric, that amount sounds spectacularly much more than a mere four inches which, while creating cataclysms of concern for Lower Mainlanders, is laughable in its relative insignificance to those living almost anywhere else in The Great White North. On the other hand, kids and my next-door neighbour love to play in it. In fact, for the past couple of weeks
the neighbour’s tricked-out tractor has been parked in the garage breezeway waiting for such a morning as this when, before the crack of dawn, it can with flashing lights and backup beeper be put into driveway cleaning mode. The diligence with which the neighbour conducts his kindly snow removal gestures is truly remarkable. On the rare occasion that we have a truly large dump of snow, he spends most of the day clearing as many driveways as he can get to before the rains come to wash away his good and generous works. And isn’t that what this season of Christmas should be about – generosity, kind deeds, warm thoughts, neighbourliness and helping others? We may never achieve peace on earth, but we can certainly try to do everything else, even if it’s just the simple act of cleaning a driveway or shovelling someone’s sidewalk. Or, as I am doing – perhaps as you read this – donating a pint of blood. There isn’t a lot more “giving” than

can be done by providing the life-saving contribution of yourself through the donation of blood. There are also many for whom today and tomorrow are tough times of sadness or despair brought on by poverty, addictions and circumstance.
May all be wonderful, and the fire in your hearts be as warm as the blaze in your hearth.
Let’s not forget them and, if you haven’t already, put aside some of your wealth of generosity to make their season a little brighter. After all, joy and happiness can come in small packages, even such simple things as seeing my dog race about in the snow, taking great bounding leaps between running his nose through it. Or the horses out in the

field, their backs white as they rummage for blades of grass. The donkey, meanwhile, stands looking out of his stall wondering I’m sure why his equine cousins are so dumb as to be out in the cold when hay will soon be thrown in their mangers. Not being the brightest light on the Christmas tree isn’t just restricted to four-legged creatures. As I watch the snow pile up, I’m reminded that I still have to put outdoor lights on the deck, which will now require sweeping as well as stringing. Such is the nature of procrastination; it almost always results in more effort expended! At least this year I got my shopping done early. However, on a snowy Friday as this is written, and today on the eve of Christmas when it’s being read, I wish everyone the very best of the season. May all be wonderful, and the fire in your hearts be as warm as the blaze in your hearth. From my family to you and yours, a very Merry Christmas. markrushton@abbynews.com

Ponytail chopped for charity
Reach Program students (left to right) Samantha Zaparniuk, Karley Spalding and Tina Sharp made cookies for the homeless with the help of (from left) Joyce Mossey, Laurie Mossey and Dorothy Woodstock.
Treats for the homeless
Students bake, decorate and deliver cookies An Abbotsford student wanted to spread some Christmas cheer to homeless people in the community, and she enlisted the help of some of her classmates. Tina Sharp decided to give homemade cookies to the group staying in Jubilee Park. She is a student at the Reach Program, a community-based education program for students who might not otherwise attend school. The youth in the program have
all dealt with hardships, and Tina wanted to do something positive for others who might also be dealing with hardships. She asked fellow students Karley Spalding and Samantha Zaparniuk to help. The goal was to bake, decorate and deliver 100 cookies. The girls were assisted in baking and decorating the cookies by Laurie Mossey, the youth care worker for the program; Joyce Mossey, Laurie’s mom; and Dorothy Woodstock, Joyce’s
friend. The treats were packaged by Julie Jensen. On Dec. 11, Tina, Karley, student Chase Stroomer, teacher Mark Reglin and Laurie Mossey delivered the cookies to homeless people in downtown Abbotsford. “I got a warm, tingly feeling in my stomach,” Tina said of delivering the cookies. “I’ve never felt that way before and it made me feel so happy to see them all smile. I would love to do it again.”
A local man had his 11-inch ponytail cut off on Dec. 5 to raise money for the Psalm 23 Transition Society. A group of seven people bid for the rights to chop the hair of Frank Kucey, raising $1,650. Highest bidder Darcy McDonald cut the ponytail, and Fusion Hair Design then gave Kucey a haircut. Psalm 23 is a charity that supports people who want to overcome addiction. Among the services it provides are transitional housing, home-cooked meals, mentoring and group counselling, academic upgrading, and vocational skills training. For more information, visit psalm23society.com.
Frank Kucey holds up the ponytail that he had cut off to raise funds for charity. Highest bidder Darcy McDonald (left) performed the duty. Also in the photo is Kristy Keller, owner of Fusion Hair Design, which gave Kucey a follow-up haircut.

Students in the Community Access Program recently donated cash to three local charities, as well as food to the Abbotsford Food Bank. CAP donates to charities
The Community Access Program (CAP) at Yale Secondary has made its annual donation to local charities. The program is for students who are moderately and mildly
intellectually disabled. Since September, they have been collecting food donations for the Abbotsford Food Bank, along with the bottles they collect for their business throughout
the year. The group achieved its goal of raising $1,000 and has now donated money to the food bank, Youth Unlimited and Cyrus Centre.

ALEX BUTLER Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has put up its holiday wreath again this year.
Safety wreath A holiday wreath at Fire Hall #1 on George Ferguson Way was lit again Dec. 1, and currently has five red lights. The wreath started with 31 green lights representing the 31 days in December. If a green light is replaced with a red light, it is due to preventable resident fire occurring. There is also a sign board located at the hall which lists the number of residential fires, other calls, and the total number of incidents. The sign board is updated every morning during December. Currently, the sign lists five residential fires, 16 other fires and a total of 312 fire-related incidents. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service is reminding the public to take time to be fire safe over the holidays.

Retired Abbotsford Police detective Bill Emery and current major crime detective Tom Wheatley each recently received provincial Awards of Valour for their role in a serial-killer investigation. The two were among 10 members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) recognized for their work in linking three murders of sex-trade workers. The officers worked through their 2007 yearend holidays to secure an arrest of the accused. The group were among 82 officers recognized during the recent Police Honours Night in Victoria. A total of 38 officers received the Award of Valour – the highest honour for a police officer in B.C. – and another 44 received meritorious service awards, recognizing exemplary performance.

The city is advising residents that blue bags for recycling containing wrapping paper will not be collected. Christmas wrapping paper cannot be recycled due to low-quality paper and the number of contaminants. The city suggest that when wrapping presents, consider alternatives such as reusable gift bags, tins, shopping bags or newspapers instead.

Honda’s contemporary on a dying breed 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6 It’s fascinating to watch trends in the auto industry play out over time. Some changes happen quickly, with one manufacturer coming out with a feature, then the rest of the industry following suit. Backup cameras would be a good example of this. Other trends are much slower, changing because of demographic fluctuations. One example of a slow-moving trend is the two-door coupe falling out of favour and its replacement by sedans and crossovers. This trend is greatly affected by baby boomers getting older and buying more for practical reason, rather than styling. In the 1980s, and even the beginning of the 90s, there were plenty of coupes to choose from and they sold well. But where are the Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Pontiac Sunfire and Ford Probe coupes? Now gone and many not replaced with newer models. I’m thrilled to report that there are a few coupes still available and one that is worthy of consideration is this new 2014 Honda Accord Coupe V6. Looks The Accord Coupe is based on the all-new Accord sedan that has been selling very well for Honda. In fact, it won the Canadian Car of the Year this year as decided by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada. Honda has done a good job of updating this big coupe with a more modern twist. Sold in three configurations from the base EX to the EX-L Navi (L stand for leather and navi is self-explanatory),
which are both 4-cylinder way the radio stores and equipped models. The top retrieves pre-set radio trim is the EX-L Navi with stations. It took a long V6. This top trim level is the time to set the stereo model seen here: it comes up and having to go with LED projector headback and forth between lamps, 18-inch wheels and different screens is not duel chrome exhaust tips. If you like the idea that intuitive. Inside It’s a big and comfortable coupe. The back seat is actually usable for adults and the front seats are very comfortable. The trunk is huge and the back seat folds for extra long items but the seats do not split and fold, plus the opening to the back seat is small. Standard feature on all Accord models is a backup camera and heated seats. Honda, in my opinion, has raised the bar in the mid-sized category and produced the nicest dash I have seen in this class. There are two screens in the centre console, one for the navigation unit and the other for the radio. They are framed in beautiful, high quality satin metal, chrome and soft touch materials. One area that could be improved is the
power plants and duel clutch automatic transmission in favour of a manual. I’m glad that Honda still offers this layout; it shows they are serious about being a true enthusiast’s car company. Granted, most buyers will get the very good 6-speed automatic transmission with the 3.5L V6, but with 278hp and 252 lb.ft. of torque it will be a very lively car in either configuration. The manual is a joy to use and it is like a throwback to drive a V6 equipped manual car. The 4-cylinder models have 185hp from a direct injection 2.4L engine and either a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) for added fuel savings. The CVT is capable of 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway. The

V6 uses more at 10.0L/100km in the city and 6.1L on the highway. Verdict When I started reviewing cars back in the early 1990s, cars like this were common: a mid-sized sedan with a V6 engine and a manual transmission. I can clearly remember driving a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima and Accord equipped this way. While most companies are moving away from this design, Honda is sticking with it for now. Soon Honda will have smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines available and this big coupe might too be fitted with something more efficient. If you like the idea of a smart looking car that is well equipped and powerful, you might want to move on an Accord Coupe V6 before it follows the latest trend.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Even though we have high fuel prices in Canada, the trend is away from small fuel-efficient cars to larger vehicles. Subcompact and even compact sales are down but sales of small SUVs and even mid-sized vehicles are up. There are a couple of things at play here. The first is the stronger (not so much in the last two months) Canadian dollar over the last several years has allowed carmakers to jam more content into their cars and often the retail price has dropped too. The second is that vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient, so buying a slightly bigger car isn’t much of a hardship. With this as a backdrop, it is interesting to see that Mitsubishi has introduced a three-cylinder fuel saving car at the smallest end of the market.
Looks The Mirage is sold in two trim levels; the base starts at $12,498 and comes pretty sparsely equipped. It’s a small car with a little price
tag. The much bigger Nissan Versa is cheaper at $11,898 and has buckets more power. The car that most people will choose is the Mirage SE with many more goodies but the price jumps dramatically to $15,398 and with the automatic transmission it lands at $16,598. At this price, there are plenty of options in the subcompact class. Styling is not what I would call eye-catching. Cars like the Ford Fiesta or the Kia Rio have much more appeal and features for similar money to this SE Mirage.
Inside On the plus side, the Mirage SE does come nicely equipped. The front driver’s seat has adjustment and both front seats have very good seat heaters that bring your backside up to the appropriate temperature in short order. The centre cluster is nicely finished and it features Bluetooth with streaming audio. There is an auxiliary jack but no USB jack to charge your phone. The back seat is small and the rear cargo area is what one might expect from a lit-
tle car. But this vehicle does not live in a vacuum. The Kia Rio, with more features, like satellite radio, is only a $1,000 more and is way up on space and horsepower. The Nissan Versa Note is massive in comparison and for $1,700 more has push button start and a backup camera. So yes, the Mirage is nicely equipped and has a good price but there are other options out there that are as good if not better.
Drive What this little car was designed to do is deliver impressive fuel economy. This is achieved by placing a 3-cylinder engine under the hood and matching it to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). With just 74hp, this car is way down on power compared to the rest of the subcompact set, even the Fiat 500 has 101hp and the Nissan Versa has 109hp. This combination of small packaging and small engine deliver a rating of 5.3L/100km in the city and 4.4L on the highway. In my mostly city driving I
was achieving 7L/100km. The problem with such a small engine is that it often needs to be pushed hard to accelerate and pass other traffic. The engine and CVT are loud, especially when the car is cold. The steering is very light for easy maneuverability but at higher speeds it feels too vague. This car is happy cruising because the engine settles down to a lower RPM and the noise level drops. Ask this car to perform and it’s an experience filled with noise and vibration.
Verdict With a very low starting price and potentially good fuel economy the basic Mirage has a place for a buyer who wants a basic runabout that sips gas but if the trend away from small cars is any indication, that will be a small number. zack@drivewaybc.ca

what happens at this time of year: people get killed because they undertake horrendously long road trips over strange terrain. Resist the urge to tell your family exactly when you expect to arrive. Tell them to go ahead and eat, you’ll get something along the way. What occurs too often is you end up setting yourself an unrealistic time to get there in your enthusiasm to re-unite with loved ones. You figure out the distance and divide it by the posted speed limit. Forget that; you’ll be lucky if you get near the posted limit in winter conditions. How do you figure how long it’s going to take to get to Aunt Maud’s this year? –
Recall how long it took last June then add about 15 minutes for every hour to allow for inclement weather.
three hours don’t head out after work but wait until daybreak the next day. It’s not ideal out there at this time of year and you don’t want to travel through unfamiliar territory in darkness. Once you have set out, stop for a few minutes every hour along the way, walk around the car and draw a few deep breaths. Stop for coffee or take a Thermos if there’s no place to stop along the way. Share the driving but if you’re alone and get drowsy pull off for a nap or better still check into a motel. Aunt Maud would prefer you to arrive alive tomorrow than have you arrive dead on time tonight.
In addition, if really bad weather is forecast you don’t add anything you just postpone the trip for 24 hours or longer. Also, if your most optimistic travel time estimate tops

Although there is lots of room inside it does not give the impression of a big SUV, and it manoeuvres quite well. With the latest technologies added, I found it easy to use and very useful. Shoulder checks are something I do by habit, but with the side blind zone alert feature it is like having someone else take a second look, which is comforting.

ABBOTSFORD
Yale Secondary School hosted its annual Calculated Acts of Kindness Fair last month. Booths were set up in the gym by the senior leadership class, each on a mission to coordinate a calculated act of kindness in support of a community cause. “Community service is a significant part of our leadership program here,” said leadership teacher Soraya Rajabally. “Fun school events such as dances and lunchtime student activities are great but to demonstrate true leadership, students need to understand what it is to be of service to others and especially to those in need in our own community.” For the past month, students have been doing that by selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Abbotsford Heat tickets, raising close to $1,000 for the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau. Students have also supported a family in need over the holidays by purchasing a Christmas hamper and gifts. On a recent Friday, students were at McMillan Elementary school acting as Santa’s elves by co-ordinating fun activities for the students there. Additionally, students made more than 100 sandwiches and filled lunch bags to hand out to those in need around Abbotsford. Students have also served lunch and snacks at the Cyrus Centre for youth as well as provided donated items such as socks, toques, and hygienic products. More events are soon to come, including a Christmas fun day for students at Mountain Elementary, an afternoon to mingle with seniors at Bevan Lodge, as well as a visit to children who are currently residing at the Abbotsford hospital. From co-ordinating a clothing drive to teens in need, to collecting items such as toothbrushes, gloves, books, and socks to fill shoe boxes for those less fortunate, Yale Secondary students continue find ways to give back.

Entrepreneurs host trade shows
Three Abbotsford schools recently took part in the PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs program, culminating in trade shows where they sold products made during the six-week program. Chief Dan George Middle School, Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School, and William A. Fraser Middle School joined 24 other classrooms in the Fraser Valley in launching the PowerPlay
Young Entrepreneurs program this year. The six-week program was developed and designed for students in Grades 3 to 8 and helps them to develop an early understanding of money management, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Students take a business from concept to delivery, generating ideas, preparing business
plans, creating products and designing marketing materials. At the end of the program, they showcase their achievements at a PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs trade show, selling their products to students, family and community leaders. The program is sponsored by Envision Financial.

Students at Upper Sumas Elementary presented A Pirate Christmas on Tuesday at the Abbotsford Arts Centre. The holiday musical depicts Santa’s exhausted elves enjoying some pre-Christmas relaxation in the warm island sun when they are joined by pirates. The legendary White Beard (aka Santa) and the elves teach the pirates about true treasure.

Bridge tolls double Jan. 1 The half-price tolls to cross the Port Mann Bridge will remain in effect until Jan. 1, when the year-long discount ends and motorists who now pay $1.50 will be charged the full $3. Officials say all the new Highway 1 lanes through Coquitlam and Burnaby will be open before Christmas, and the toll discount will be kept in place for the rest of the month. About 20 per cent of regular vehicles using the bridge already pay the full $3 toll, while 80 per cent qualified for the 50 per cent discount by signing up with the TReO electronic tolling system within three months of the bridge opening last December. The bridge won’t open the final two of its 10 lanes until next summer, when the old Port Mann Bridge will be fully dismantled.

School district boasts record graduation rate Alina KONEVSKI Abbotsford News
For the first time, 90 per cent of Abbotsford Grade 12 students graduated high school, according to the superintendent’s annual report on achievement, which is four points higher than the previous year, and 10 points above the B.C. average. “It’s pretty exciting.
We set a goal for 100 per cent of our kids to graduate, but around the province, we know that average is about 80 per cent. For us to be at 90 per cent is a real testament to our teachers and our leaders in our schools,” said superintendent Kevin Godden. The report was presented to the Abbotsford board of

education at the Dec. 10 meeting and recounts achievements and challenges during the 2012-13 school year. Aboriginal student graduation was also at an all-time high, cresting 78 per cent last year, after steadily increasing over five years. The provincial average is 60 per cent. Going forward, the district is prioritizing the most vulnerable learners by supporting early learning programs for the youngest students, and a diversity of educational and career pathways for the oldest. The school district is also hiring an instructor on a five-year term to work specifically with youth involvement with crime.

Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
For Taylor Lundrigan and Katherine Murnaghan, there’s a two-pronged appeal to playing softball for Simon Fraser University. “It’s the only NCAA program in Canada, explained Lundrigan, alluding to the fact that the Burnaby institution’s sports teams have been playing in the NCAA Div. The men's volleyball pipeline between Mennonite Educational Institute and Trinity Western University continues to flow, with the delivery of yet another blue-chip prospect from the Eagles to the Spartans. MEI senior Ben Lieuwen signed with the Spartans on Wednesday, and he's following a well-worn path. In recent years, the likes of Ben Ball, Steve Marshall, John Wiebe and current Spartans libero Tyler Koslowsky have suited up for the Langleybased program. “TWU has been my dream school ever since I first saw the Spartans play,

Answer: Over the years sun damage causes us to have broken capillaries and sun spots which can make us look 10 years older. We have various ways to improve skin texture and tone. We can start by using a combination of physician grade treatment products which include Vitamin A, hydroquinone and sunblock as well as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). Usually 3 - 5 treatments are necessary. If you are interested in a more aggressive treatment we can combine physician grade products, IPL and Fraxel laser – the combination will enhance each others results. You will need to continue protecting yourself from the sun and use sunblocks, hats and sunglasses to maintain the results. Dr. Marianna Snyman

school with a great culture and I'm excited to be a part of it. The 6'2" left side has fashioned a memorable high school volleyball career at MEI – he was named a first team all-star at AA provincials three years in a row, helping the Eagles to a gold (2011) and two bronzes (2012 and 2013) in that span. Lieuwen also tasted club success as a member of the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club. In 2012, he earned MVP honours as his FVVC squad won the U16 national championship. Spartans coach Ben Josephson said that the level of success Lieuwen's teams have enjoyed is an element that "cannot go underestimated." "Already a national champion and provincial champion, his experience in those types of matches is something we are excited to add into our mix," Josephson said. "Ben's leadership and motor are two intangibles that will be tremendous assets for our team. He has a great ability to inspire others to play up to their potential and his example as a true competitor is something to be admired and imitated by all. “Ben also brings some great tangible skills to our team as he has an explosive arm and great ground skills. We look for Ben to be one of our primary controlling players for years to come.

Hard work pays off for athletes
From A40
here (to Abbotsford).” Lundrigan and Murnaghan, Grade 12 classmates at Yale Secondary and teammates in the school’s softball academy, both recently signed their letters of intent to join the SFU softball squad. Murnaghan, a catcher/shortstop who stands six feet tall, can hit for power and boasts a strong throwing arm. She’s also an ambitious student who carries a 95 per cent average and hopes to become a doctor one day. “SFU is rated really high for academics, and that was appealing,” she noted. Lundrigan, an athletic shortstop who has suited up for B.C. rep squads on a number of occasions, is also a terrific basketball player who would have had post-secondary options in that sport if she’d sought them. But she’s a softball player first and foremost. “Softball, I’ve always loved it since I was little,” she said. “I love being outdoors and in the sun. It’s a different sport than basketball – basketball is more of a quick pace and you’re always running, and softball you’re thinking all the time.” Jen Schreyer, one of the coaches in the Yale academy, is an SFU alum, and she believes her alma mater will be a great home for Lundrigan and Murnaghan. “They’ll be playing for (SFU head coach) Mike Renney, who used to be the Team Canada (national women’s) coach and has been there for numerous years,” Schreyer said. “He has a pretty tough reputation, so I’m sure these girls are going to be working pretty hard. “They’re both hardworking girls, and they both set goals for themselves back in Grade 9 that they wanted to get softball scholarships. And they worked their butts off to do that, both academically and athletically.”
