Despite the first snowfall of the year on Friday, a warming trend was expected to eliminate the chance of a white Christmas this year in Parksville Qualicum Beach. As much as five centimetres of the white stuff fell on Friday in outlying areas. After a weekend that was expected to be wet and well above the freezing mark, The Weather Network was predicting five degrees and sunny today and four degrees with mixed precipitation tomorrow, Christmas Day. With last Friday’s little dash of snow, the City of Parksville reminds residents that in the event of a big dump of snow, it is the responsibility of the property owners to clear the adjacent sidewalks. “This is a great opportunity to show how neighbourly we can be,” said Mayor Chris Burger. Business leaders and politicians say they have eliminated some red tape for local entrepreneurs with the launch of the Mid-Island InterCommunity Business Licence. Starting Jan.1, businesses can purchase a licence that allows them to legally operate in 12 communities from Duncan to Campbell River. “Up until now, there has been a lot of red tape for businesses,” Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell said during a news conference at a construction site Thursday in her constituency. “This is a helping hand for them.” Contractors and others who find themselves doing work in, say, Parksville one day and Comox or Port Alberni the next, can now purchase a business licence in their home community and add this new licence for a fee.
