Fragile wildlife muskeg needs to be protected Dear Editor, I live along Lakeshore Drive south of Parkland Beach at Gull Lake. I am very concerned about the damage that is being done to the environmental wildlife reserve here and its walkway which runs north- south along the Gull Lake shore, south of Parkland Beach. Quads and snowmobiles are destroying a very fragile wildlife muskeg that is a year-round home to hundreds of animals and birds.

Negative criticism and judgment, the bullying behaviour which is a norm in our adult world today, does not work very well to communicate with people, in my experience as a teacher and counsellor. So what is the alternative? I spoke with Ponoka County about it and one of their answers was education and alternatives.

The photo below shows tracks directly to the shore where hundreds of birds nest in the spring.

Already, snowmobiles have travelled down there this winter, doing further damage.

I talked with Peace Officer Les Squires, who patrols the area regularly as does Rimbey RCMP, and he showed me the photo below. When he spoke to the quad drivers they told him they didn’t know about the sign, that they were parked beside, which says no snowmobiles or quads.

There are four entrances to the reserve, off Lakeshore Drive, connected to walkways up to Sunnyside subdivision above. These walkways have little bridges for pedestrians. I am surprised they can hold the weight of the snowmobiles that travel down them. So it is local citizens destroying this reserve.

There are some “NO Vehicles” signs up, there is a chain across one entrance and a barricade at the main Beach entrance. Snowmobilers just go around. Ponoka County told me that

originally there were more signs placed at the entrances and they just disappeared, quickly.

The motorized vehicles have severely damaged the wooden borders all along the walkway which the community, including Sunnyside, has paid for. As well, the land seems irreparably torn up, some ruts filled with water that never dried up this year. It isn’t enjoyable to see as I walk there to connect with Nature and clear my head from the stresses of this world.

Les said he has asked people that if they lived in Calgary, would they tear up their neighbourhood like that? I also notice snowmobiles don’t tear around the Beach area so maybe they don’t want to destroy that part. I do see this year that they have broadened their travels to cover new areas in this reserve area, hitting even more fragile landscape areas.

Section 2 of the Traffic Safety Act states that no off-highway vehicle is to travel on any portion of a highway from fence line to fence line. I guess that’s why some snowmobiles travel the pedestrian pathways down to Lakeshore Drive.

They do also travel along Lakeshore Drive. This Drive is a welltravelled pedestrian path every day all day long. Groups of people, people with dogs and small children as well as mothers walking strollers walk here even at this time of year.

There are older people driving along this road as well as an ambulance visiting regularly. I watched once as a young boy drove along the Drive down the middle of the road, with his

head turned to talk to his passenger behind him. I wonder why licenses aren’t required for driving snowmobiles which I see regularly travelling along the road faster than the posted 30 km speed limit. I shudder at the potential conflict with this combination of traffic.

I also see so many community minded people and responsible citizens here enjoying this area and obeying the law: fishermen in the summer and winter, boaters and canoeists, bicyclists, as well as the walkers. Two community members fixed the little bridge on the walkway that was teetering off its legs.

The County and I discussed many solutions. They indicated this is a problem at all the access points to lakes in this area. I have seen many cities where lake access has been permanently closed because of problems like this. The County said the communities together have to come up with an answer, which involves the Residents’ Associations like the Sunnyside one here. They suggested that building an alternative, separate, legal path for quads and snowmobiles down to the lake could be a long-term solution. Until then, they are able to access the lake at the marina entrance as well as other entrances without having to travel on the road or the pedestrian walkways or in the wildlife reserve.

I hope that the people who are driving these vehicles read this letter and think about what they are teaching their children. I hope the damage stops.

Music, memories and grandchildren bring joy to holiday season It’s here.

It is actually, ‘the night before’!

Already!

Who knew. A few days ago I watched one of my granddaughters open one of those advent calendar windows and take out the little chocolate treat.

Treena Mielke “Almost here, On The Other Side grandma,” she said, like she is making a big announcement that no one but she is aware of. She pops the sweet treat into her mouth, expertly turns a few cartwheels on the living room floor, being careful not to crash into the Christmas tree and then curls up with her book, obviously not worried about anything very much at all, least of all the countdown to Christmas.

“I want to be like her,” I decide, shaking the advent calendar to see if there are any broken pieces of chocolate left inside the windows.

There aren’t.

I rest my hand on top of her head, loving the feel of her thick silky blonde hair.

“What was Christmas like when you were a kid, grandma?” she asks, putting her book down.

“It was,” I pause, surprised at the unexpected attention. “It was good, sweetheart.”

And, just for a moment, a quick, special moment, I allow myself to go back there, to the days before I was a grandma, or even a mom.

She looks at me. Expectant. Waiting. And so I tell her.

I tell her about how my brother and I wrapped tinfoil around cardboard to make a perfect star and how I cut silver paper from my dad’s roll-yourown cigarette package to make tinsel on a real honest to goodness tree that smelled good like the forest.

And I tell her how I grew up in a bachelor pad, nothing more than a shack really, with worn linoleum and a coal and wood stove and lived with brothers and a dad who taught me how to fish and

play ball and be tough. I never really did get the tough part.

She’s still listening, though her attention is waning, but I keep talking. I tell her about when my dad hauled in the Christmas tree and, when we put those bubble lights on it, I truly believed our whole house was transformed.

And I go on to tell her about how my brothers would always get one of those board hockey games and Toronto Maple Leafs were the blue guys and Montreal Canadians the red ones. And I tell her how we used to play with a marble instead of a puck and sometimes it would go flying across the room when one of the players got too exuberant.

And I tell her how we would all sing together and my dad would play the violin, and someone would play the piano.

And, I try to tell her how wonderful it was. I try to paint word pictures for her because I want her

to know the way a real tree smells, and I want her to see how the bubble lights catch the reflection of homemade tinsel. And I want her to hear the echo of the laughter and know the way the sounds of music soften everything and make it beautiful.

She looks at me and smiles with the innocence of a child, but with wisdom far beyond her years shining in her eyes.

She comes out with her violin. “Let me play for you, grandma,” she says, tucking the violin under her chin, her blonde hair framing her lovely, delicate little face. And as I listen to a rather squeaky version of Away In A Manager, I realize that I have been blessed once again with a very special, unexpected magical gift.

And, once again, I am grateful.

And for each and every one of my readers, I would wish that you, too, may experience the special gifts of the season.

And a very merry Christmas to you all!

Nelson Mandela: Peace at Last The Catholic Church consecrates saints with less pomp and sentimentality than was lavished on Nelson Mandela during the week-long media orgy that we have just been through.

The problem was that everybody in the media knew well in advance that he was dying, and had time to invest millions in preparing to “cover” the event. Hotel rooms and telecom facilities were booked, crews and anchors were deployed, and the expense had to be justified by round-the-clock coverage of funeral orations, vox pop interviews, and talking heads.

And of course all the world’s politicians showed up for the greatest photo op of the decade, including many who had condemned Mandela as a terrorist before he pulled off a peaceful transition from apartheid to majority rule in South Africa.

But now that the babble of rhetoric has died down and just before the myth was takes over completely, let us talk honestly about who he was and what he accomplished.

The man whom they buried at Qunu on Sunday was arrested by the white minority regime in 1963, probably on a tip from the US Central Intelligence Agency. He was the head of the African National

Congress’s military wing at the time, and continued to back its campaign of sabotage and attacks on military and police targets throughout his 27 years in prison.

It was a different time, when US President Ronald Reagan could declare that the apartheid regime was “essential to the Free World,” and the ANC’s main international supporters were the Soviet Union and Cuba. Mandela might have ended up as a man of violence if he had not gone to prison.

Instead, in prison, he had the time to develop his ideas about reconciliation and persuade the other ANC leaders who were also confined to Robben Island of their value. By the time he came out of prison in 1990, he had become the man that everybody knew they could trust – including the whites.

During the next four years, when he and F.W. De Klerk, the last white president, negotiated the transfer of power from the white minority to the black majority, he really was the indispensable

man. His commitment to reconciliation was so visible and genuine that whites were willing to do what had once seemed inconceivable: to hand over power before they absolutely had to.

If you want to know what South Africa would have looked like if the whites had clung to power down to the last ditch, look at Syria today. But it was not only Mandela who saved the country from that fate: they gave the Nobel Peace Prize to both Mandela and De Klerk, because the miracle could not have happened if De Klerk had not had the will and the skill to lead his own Afrikaner tribe out of power.

Then, after the first free election in 1994, Mandela became the president, and frankly he wasn’t very good at it. He had no executive experience, nor much aptitude for it. But he did his country one last big favour: he retired at the end of his first term rather than clinging to power. And he even had a few good years left to enjoy his family before age began to drag him down.

He was not a saint; he was just a man. But he was the right man at the right time.

Community dinner shows the true Christmas spirit

A table laden with a feast fit for a king, a background of laughter and friendly banter, music, many hands ready to help, guests receiving gifts, and above all, a shared spirit of camaraderie and friendship.

The community Christmas dinner in Rimbey promises all this and more.

This year, the event is to be held at the Rimbey Drop In at 2 p.m. on Christmas Day, said one of the organizers Gayle Rondeel. The master of ceremonies for the event will be Dave Davies.

As well as a delicious meal there will be games and music and a chance to socialize for everyone.

“It promises to be a fun event and so many people always step forward to help out,” said Rondeel. “Last year it went really well. We had about 50 people and the cooks, kitchen help and other volunteers all enjoyed the lovely dinner along with everyone else.”

“It was really overwhelming, the amount of support and help we received,” she said. “And I expect this year will be no different.”

Rondeel said donations of food, cash and Christmas tablecloths are needed.

“The Drop In was gracious enough to donate their facility which means we have to borrow way less pots and pans,” she said.

Local businessman donates generously to town, school and Rimbey food bank

By Treena Mielke A Rimbey businessman is demonstrating the Christmas spirit in a very tangible way.

With Christmas only a few days away, John Suh, owner of Rimbey Shell Gas Station, in an unexpected gesture of generosity, handed over thousand dollar cheques to Rimbey Food Bank, Rimbey Junior Senior High School and the Town of Rimbey.

Even though Suh’s English is somewhat broken, his friendly smile and firm handshake to all the recipients spoke volumes and no other words were necessary.

“It makes me feel good,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.

The three recipients and Suh braved the cold temperatures Wednesday to stand under the Shell sign for the traditional donation picture.

Mathew Jaycox, who received

the cheque on behalf of the town said the money is most appreciated by the town.

“It was very unexpected,” he said. “He is certainly being a good corporate citizen.”

The money will likely go towards parks and recreation, he said.

Katherine Winters from the Rimbey Food Bank said it is difficult to put into words how much donations such as this mean to the food bank.

“The community as a whole comes together this time of year.

People really come forward to help out. The spirit of giving is really out there.”

Tim Lekas, principal of the high school said Suh’s generosity is very much appreciated.

“We are planning to use the donated funds to support our student academic achievement awards, which supports the hard work being done by our student body.”

Greater use of space heaters, electrical cords and candles are a few of the factors that contribute to an increase in house fires. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services encourages Edmontonians to stay safe this holiday season by following these very important fire safety reminders: • Water fresh trees daily: if you’re using a real tree, buy a fresh tree and keep the base of the trunk in water at all times. Keep your tree away from any ignition source such as the fireplace, heaters or candles.

• Check all lights before decorating: Before you

put those lights on the tree or around the front window, check the cords closely. Discard any sets that are frayed or damaged.

• Make sure you have working smoke alarms: Replace smoke alarms if they are over 10 years old. Remember that you need working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test your alarms to make sure they will alert you and your family if a fire occurs, giving you the precious seconds you need to safely escape.

• Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms: Replace any carbon monoxide alarms over seven years old. Installing carbon monoxide alarms in your home will alert you to the presence of this deadly gas.

Rimbey Ag Society receives Christmas gift from the Province

By Treena Mielke An early Christmas present from the provincial government was hand delivered to the Rimbey Ag Society to go towards the partially constructed Agrim Centre, not by the jolly old elf himself, but by the MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar. MLA David Dorward met with several members of the ag society Tuesday and presented them with a CFEP cheque for $125,000.

Dorward said he was pleased to be the one to hand deliver the cheque.

“I volunteered,” he said. “It is a good way to thank everybody for the hard work they have done.”

Before the cheque presentation, Dorward chatted with the ag society about the centre.

He stressed that funding for projects such as the Agrim Centre is available and decisions are made encompassing all of Alberta, regardless of if the area is served by an MLA from the Opposition.

“We care about all areas of Alberta and an area being served by an opposing MLA doesn’t get erased,” he said.

He commended the ag society for the hard work they have done to get the Agrim Centre off the ground.

“It’s groups like you who are working your butts off who will get attention,” he said.

Dorward noted that appealing to

the public for donations for sports facilities can be more difficult than if the facility was to be built for a purpose relating to health.

“When you say the word sport, people might say they don’t know if they want to donate.”

However, he noted Rimbey, being a rural municipality, has the community factor which isn’t present in Edmonton.

Ken Whitelock from the ag society explained the Agrim Centre is to be available for a range of activities, not all of which will be related to agriculture.

“It will be suitable for trade shows as well,” he said. “We plan to have permanent seating for 900 people.”

Ag Society member Ben Ostrem said the new facility is sorely needed.

“Ponoka has a new (ag) facility and it is constantly overbooked,” he said. “And this (agriculture) is our rural sport. This is horse country.”

Dorward, who founded Edmonton’s Saville Community Sports Centre (GO Centre), the largest community and sport centre of its type in North America, was encouraging and supportive of the ag society’s efforts to get the Agrim Centre built and operational.

“Good projects like this are supported by the province.”

Rimbey Ag Society members Ziandra Vos, Pat Burrage, Robyn Andersen, Tim Edge, Darren McDowell, Ben Ostrem, Ken Whitlock and Shirley Ingram received a $125,000 from David Dorward, MLA for Edmonton-Gold Bar. The provincial grant will go towards the Agrim Centre.

The stands were packed with students and parents cheering.

Santa and his elves came out for the night and handed out candy canes, school T-shirts, water bottles, and Frisbees to the crowd. We also had our school mascot, the Pink Panther skate around and welcome parents and students to the game.

• When you go out, blow out: Candles can set the perfect mood for a holiday celebration, but remember to always blow out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. • Keep matches and lighters out of sight and out of reach of children: Matches and lighters can be deadly in the hands of children. If you smoke, have only one lighter or book of matches, and keep them with you at all times.

• Watch what you heat: Cooking fires most commonly occur when stoves are left unattended. Always stay in the kitchen when cooking – especially if using oil or high temperatures. If a pot catches fire, carefully slide a tight-fitting lid over the pot to smother the flames and then turn off the heat.

• Encourage smokers to smoke outside: Careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires. If you do allow smoking indoors, use large, deep ashtrays that can’t be knocked over and make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished. Outdoor smokers are reminded to also use deep ashtrays, and make sure their cigarettes are properly extinguished.

• Stay safe during social gatherings: With all the festive cheer this time of year, keep a close eye on anyone attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol. Social occasions coupled with alcohol consumption, cooking, smoking or unattended candles can create a fire risk. To minimize the risk at parties, plan your event in advance so you have enough time to prepare the meal. Hurried cooking activities, multi-tasking and neglecting fire safety can be ingredients for an unwanted house fire. Avoid over-crowding. Encourage guests to smoke outside and provide them with a safe ashtray. Refrain from burning candles during parties, as they can easily be knocked over or ignite nearby combustibles unnoticed.

Boys and Girls Club for Town of Rimbey gets a green light

By Treena Mielke A Boys and Girls Club is soon to be established in Rimbey.

The programs, which encourage healthy living, personal growth, learning and community involvement through challenging activities, will get underway in February. The program designed for youngsters aged six to 12 will be set up at the community centre. A program geared towards teens will run at the Youth Action Centre one evening a week.

Youth program coordinator, Jossie Krenzler will run the programs, and Annette Peck, who is program director for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Go Girls in Rimbey, will oversee the club.

Peck is excited about the new program.

“By becoming a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Canada we can take advantage of their programs, partnerships and quality standards knowing that part of their mandate is to meet the unique needs of our community.” she said. “It will be fun, affordable to everyone and determined by what Rimbey needs.”

Peck said the guidance of Beth Reitz of Ponoka Youth Centre/Boys and Girls Club of Wolf Creek has been most helpful in getting the program established.

“She has been down this same path and knows what it takes to offer high quality programs.”

Financial support received from the Town of Rimbey, Rimbey Family Community Support Services and Neighborhood Place has helped get the program off the ground.

Cash donations, gently used living room furniture, games, equipment and eventually healthy snacks will all be gratefully appreciated, she added. Anyone who wishes to donate may call 403704-6641.

“This club will definitely be worth the wait,” said Peck. “Stay tuned in the new year for specific days and times.”

Bluffton 4-H Club president Heidi Trenson presented a cheque for $1,000 to Rimbey Ag Society treasurer Shirley Ingram. The money will go towards the new Agrim Center.

On December 1 there was a District Multi Species Judging at the Rimbey Agriplex. We judged beef heifers, horses and hay. Lots of members from our club attended and did very well. Congratulations to juniors Tim Trenson who placed first and Katie Hudson placed third.

In the intermediate category first was Sylvia Trautman, second was Hanna Falt and third was Leah Trenson.

For Seniors Ben Trenson placed first and Heidi Trenson placed second. It was a great day!

We had our meeting on Dec. 6. We played games and had a potluck supper. Our club decided to donate $1,000 to the Rimbey Agrim Center and $250 to the Rimbey Food Bank Christmas program.

On December 14 some 4-H members went to the Liberty Hall Christmas potluck and did face painting. We have been having lots of fun and are ready for plenty more throughout the year!

Impaired drivers keep Rimbey RCMP officers busy This week, Rimbey RCMP responded to 37 calls for service.

Highlights, not surprisingly, include impaired drivers, motor vehicle collisions, break and enter, theft and other serious matters.

Bandit arrested in Rimbey On Saturday, December 15, just after midnight, a 25-year-old man from Leduc was in Rimbey partying. After consuming illegal drugs he went on a rampage breaking into houses and causing a disturbance. The accused was arrested red handed when he was caught trying to enter another house. Mounties welcomed him to Rimbey with a new pair of silver bracelets and a free ride to jail after he resisted arrest. Unfortunately, when the bandit broke into one house several dogs escaped through the open door. To date, all the dogs have been found but one.

MVAs reported Several motor vehicle collisions occurred throughout the detachment area. Officers responded to several rollovers, deer strikes and other crashes. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.

Impaired drivers face charges Another impaired driver was arrested making his way home after a night out drinking. The 34-yearold male, driving a Chevrolet truck, was charged after he blew over the legal limit. Several offenders were convicted of impaired driving in court last Friday. If you are out tonight celebrating and are thinking of driving ask yourself this, “is it worth thousands of dollars in fines and losing my vehicle?”. Don’t stop there. Ask anyone who has been convicted of drunk driving how difficult

it is to get to work without a driver’s license for at least one year. How hard do you think it is to go to Vegas with a criminal record, etc? Just imagine, if you were that person who killed an entire family on their way to hockey practice... could you live with that? Ask yourself again, “is it worth it!?!” RCMP in Rimbey have charged well over 30 motorists since April 1st with drunk driving.

Other towns in Alberta our size have less than 10 in an entire year.

DON”T DRINK AND DRIVE! Gas and dash On Wednesday, December 18,, a stolen Chevrolet truck did a “gas and dash” at a local fuel vendor. After filling up, the driver fled the gas station without paying. The investigation revealed that the truck had been recently stolen from Blackfalds. By noon, officers had recovered the truck and one adult male was arrested and is currently in custody awaiting the outcome of the investigation with criminal charges pending.

Police continue to round up wanted persons who have been evading police. A 35-year-old female was arrested in Rimbey with six outstanding warrants for her arrest.

Another 24-year-old female attended court to contest a speeding ticket to avoid losing her license as it was under review for having so many recent driving offences. This particular lead foot was surprised when she was advised she was wanted on an outstanding warrant. Apparently, she has had so many speeding tickets it was too difficult to keep all the court dates straight and one went to warrant.

Goodwill demonstrated It is no secret that our staff deal with very difficult and disrespectful people almost daily. However, in our community the overwhelming kindness and generosity shown by so many of the wonderful citizens far

outweighs the negative situations we may endure during a shift. Countless people have dropped off fresh baked goods and chocolates for us to enjoy and to share with others. A young lady recovering from a meth addiction was in custody this week and enjoyed a freshly baked treat that was given to our office. Her smile after tasting some fresh home cooking made our week.

NESBITT Mrs. Adeline Florence Nesbitt of Rimbey, Alberta passed away in the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre Extended Care on Monday December 16, 2013 at the age of 83 years.

Predeceased by her parents Bill and Peggy Grant, two grandchildren Sarah and Cayla Cameron, a sister Margaret and her brotherin-law Allister Siegstad.

Adeline is survived by her loving husband Bill of Rimbey, two son’s Jack (Betty) of Rimbey, Barry (Gloria) of Rimbey, four daughter’s Lea Nesbitt-Cameron of Cranbrook, Laurie (Gary) McElroy of Rimbey, Sherry (John) Hall of Starbuck, Manitoba, Dawn Nesbitt (Darcy) of Rimbey, fourteen grandchildren, ten and a half great grandchildren, one sister Isobel Siegstad of Harris, Saskatchewan and one special son-in-law Mark Cameron.

Memorial services were held from the Rimbey United Church on Saturday December 21, 2013 at 1:30 pm with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Interment of Adeline’s cremated remains followed in the West Haven Cemetery.

‘Tis the season: Volunteers Jackie Anderson and Florence Stemo decorated the historic Beatty House for Christmas. The beautiful home, which has been carefully restored, is available for rentals and is often used as a delightful venue for concerts and benefits.

Donation: On Nov. 12 Colleen Connelly accepted a cheque for $3,772. from Lee Tona donated by the Ladies Auxilliary to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre for 41 oxygen regulators. Pictured are Reta MacLean, Joan Carrigan, Mary Burrows, Mary Busch, Evie Burns, Pam Scott, Pat Cox, Sheila Forsen, Donna Heilemann and Arlene Edwards. Our objective is to supply the hospital with items that are not covered by the budget for patient comfort and care. Our meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Rimbey Hospital. New members always welcome.
