“I expected that because it’s controversial. The idea is, in a school setting you have many cultures, you’ve got a lot of white people that don’t understand native culture.” William Foy the community space at Central elementary for monthly evening meetings, requested permission to conduct smudging, a traditional aboriginal practice that involves

burning sweetgrass, sage or cedar for purification and to help to create a positive mindset. The association’s activities could also involve a pipe ceremony, tra-

ditionally used by First Nations to establish good faith between groups of people. Since no school board policy exists for such activities in school facilities,

superintendent Evelyn Novak forwarded the request to the board’s education policy advisory committee (EPAC), where some members raised concerns about the message the board would send if it allowed the practices. “The committee members raised questions around the ambiguity of

ll three men behind a botched 2009 extortion attempt on a Chilliwack man have finally been sentenced. Casey Sean Corbett pleaded guilty in Chilliwack Provincial Court Friday to extortion and breaking bail and was sentenced to 20 months house arrest. In September 2009, Corbett and two other men tried to terrorize a Chilliwack businessman out of half-a-million dollars with threatening phone calls. Corbett had purchased the phones for the plot but disappeared for more than three years after being released from custody after his 2009 arrest. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Nov. 19, 2009, but authorities still didn’t know where he was in January 2012, during the trial of one of his co-accused.

Bands join new regime

F

our local First Nations bands have signed onto a land management regime that helps get them out from under the yoke of the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. The Chawathil, Katzie, Cheam and Scowlitz First Nations will join the group of 110 communities across Canada to join the First Nations Land Management Regime (FNLM). The move means the bands can opt out of 34 land-related sections of the Indian Act, and assume greater control over reserve land and resources. The last word in land-use decisions for First Nations not in the FNLM is with the federal government. “This is a significant achievement for our local First Nations,” Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl said in a press release. “The FNLM Regime is a proven means for First Nations to create their own economic opportunities and become prosperous self-sufficient communities.” Other local First Nations that are part of the FNLM include, Aitchelitz, Leq’a:mel, N’Quatqua, Seabird Island, Shxwh’a:y Village, Skawahlook, Skowkale, Squiala, Tzeachten and Yakweakwioose. The next step is for the new members of the FNLM to create a land code to be approved by band membership through community ratification votes.

Lina Azeez of the Watershed Watch Salmon Society expresses concern about a hazardous waste facility on the shores of the Fraser River at a press conference hosted by 11 organizations Tuesday.

Location, not plant, is all wrong BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

R

epresentatives from 11 environmental, First Nations and sportsfishery organizations gathered on the exposed sandbars of the Fraser River Tuesday to express continued opposition to a proposed hazardous waste recycling facility nearby. Chilliwack city council unanimously approved the rezoning on Dec. 3 to allow for the Aevitas plant, which will recycle, among other things, 5,000 litres of transformer oil containing PCBs and 500,000 lamps containing mercury every month. “This is just not the location,” B.C. Federation of Drift Fishers president Rod Clapton said at the press conference on the river Tuesday. “For gosh sakes, not on the banks of the Fraser River,” added Joe Foy, national campaign director for the Wilderness Committee. Grand Chief Clarence Pennier of the Sto:lo Tribal Council (STC) expressed his disappointment that First Nations were not consulted in any way about the project. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz has repeatedly pointed out that the city followed standard procedure required by

the Local Government Act with regard to notification for a public hearing. Pennier didn’t dispute that the city does not have a legal duty to consult with First Nations, but he suggested it is what good neighbours do. “They should at least talk to us about what projects are going to happen in our territory,” Pennier said. When approached for comment at city hall later on Tuesday, Gaetz would not comment because she said council was “legally not allowed to receive new information” now that approval has been given. Asked to comment on Pennier’s suggestion that more could have been done to communicate with First Nations, Gaetz said simply that the city notified the public by way of the legal requirement of the newspaper advertising, which ran in the Times. “It is the same for everyone,” she said. Other organizations represented at the press conference included the Fraser Valley Salmon Society, the B.C. Drug and weapons charges BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

A

Chilliwack man still waiting to be sentenced for a brutal 2010 beating that fractured his victim’s skull was arrested on new drug and weapons charges earlier this month. Jerry Lee Elliott, 30, has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited weapon and failing to comply with bail conditions. On Dec. 6, Elliott and a second, 40-year-old man were arrested in a car leaving a residence in the 46200 block of 3rd Avenue where police found heroin, methamphetamine, knives, cash, scales and packaging used in the sale of drugs. Police say the residence was guarded with the use of infrared surveillance cameras throughout the property, presumably to warn occupants of police or others intending to interfere with the operation. The investigation and search warrant (the 14th drug trafficking related search warrant executed by the local drug section this year) originated after police received several complaints about traffic to and from the property.

the first ever back-to-back winner in history.

The City of Chilliwack has since removed the occupancy permit for the residence. “Drugs always pose a danger to the community and are a root cause of our street crime,” Cpl. Kurt Bosnell of the Chilliwack RCMP Drug Section said in a press release. The 40-year-old man was released on a promise to appear in Chilliwack Provincial Court Feb. 26. Elliott was being held in custody until a court appearance Dec. 18. In April, Elliott was found guilty of aggravated assault in the beating of Douglas Hiatt on Oct. 29, 2010. According to court testimony, Hiatt had stopped his vehicle on Chilliwack River Road when he was set upon by two men. He was dragged from his vehicle and beaten with what may have been a hammer and left with numerous abrasions and contusions, along with skull fractures. In handing down his decision, Judge Russell MacKay called Elliott’s attack “vicious, senseless and cowardly.” Elliott was awaiting sentencing for that crime when he was arrested Dec. 6, and his breach of bail charges stem from that incident.

IMPACTED CANINES

An impacted tooth simply means that it is “stuck” and cannot erupt into function. The maxillary cuspid (upper eyetooth) is the second most common tooth to become impacted after wisdom teeth. The cuspid teeth are designed to be the first teeth that touch when your jaws close together so they guide the rest of the teeth into the proper bite. Normally, the maxillary cuspid teeth are the last of the “front” teeth to erupt into

place, and cause any space left between the upper front teeth to close tighter together . If a cuspid tooth

gets impacted, every effort is made to get it to erupt into its proper position in the dental arch. Early Recognition Of Impacted Eyeteeth Is

The Key To Successful Treatment If the eruption path is cleared and the space is opened up by age 11-12, there is a good chance the impacted eyetooth will erupt with nature’s help alone. If the eyetooth is allowed to develop too much (age 1314), it will become impacted and will need to be coaxed into position by an oral surgeon and orthodontist working together. my community is a healthy community...

“

Born and raised in Chilliwack, I feel truly blessed that Heather and I have been able to build a business and raise our four children in such a great community. As a couple, we work hard to make family the priority as we juggle running a business, Heather’s role as a casual Nursing Unit Clerk at Chilliwack General Hospital and our community involvement with a ton of family activities. I am thoroughly impressed by the level of community partnerships secured by the Chilliwack Hospital & Health Care Foundation in their efforts to support CGH and promote healthy living in such a short time. Like many others in this fabulous city, Heather and I are committed to doing whatever we can to support CHHCF because they are our own local foundation and frankly a great example of what should be happening everywhere as a solution to our current health care challenges.”

High-flying Falcons soar Senior boys basketball team still undefeated

BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

T

he Sardis secondar y senior boys basketball team kicked off its regular season with a 88-75 win over MEI Tuesday. Eric Rogers led the Falcons offence with 30 points, Hayden Lejeune put up 21 and Colin Kellington dropped five threepointers in a 17-point performance. Sardis—ranked eighth in B.C.’s quad-A tier—went undefeated in preseason play, and the regular-season win over the Eagles improved the squad’s record to 13-0. Before downing MEI, Sardis had dismantled two top-20 teams over the weekend. On Friday, Sardis travelled to Delta and won 84-64 behind a breakout performance by Kellington, who hit six three-pointers for a career-high 22 points. Rogers again led the Falcons offence with 25 points, while Lejeune scored 14 and Cam Servatius added another 13. At one point in the third

On Saturday, Sardis hosted Kelowna in front of 200 enthusiastic Sardis fans and handed the Owls a 98 - 83 defeat. Kellington continued his breakout weekend with 17 points and three more three pointers. Lejeune and Rogers again showed why they might be the

best one-two combo in the province, putting up 22 and 21 points respectively. ◗ The Falcons continue their exhibition play at the Rod Thomson Memorial tournament at Burnaby South secondary this week, tipping off against eighth-ranked Sir Winston Churchill at 5:45 p.m. Thursday and fifth-ranked Burnaby South at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Battle royale as Kings crown hapless Chiefs BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

A

6303845

fter a strong start and a five-goal effort, the Chilliwack Chiefs again fell flat and were handed their ninth straight loss as the Prince George Spruce Kings scored eight on Monday night at the Coliseum. The goaltending tandem of Josh Halpenny and Spencer Tremblay let in four goals each in a game the Chiefs seemed to have control of for much of the first period. Kyle Westeringh made it 1-0 for the visiting Chiefs on a goal from Cooper Rush and Josh Cronin at 5:45 of the first. Two minutes later, Blake Gober made it 2-0 on a power-play goal from Shay Laurent and Austin Plevy. Prince George got one back at 8:15 from Justin Rai, but a mere nine seconds after that, the two-goal lead was back as Mathieu Tibbet scored from Jake Hand and Andrew Silard. Then it all came crashing down, as it has so many times this year. The first crack appeared when Spruce King Christian Weidauer scored the team’s second of the game to make it 3-2 on the power play just six seconds into a two-man advantage as Kurt Black and Jake Hand were serving hooking and high-sticking penalties, respectively. The Chiefs escaped that penalty kill still up a goal. Later in the period, however, with five seconds to go on a Chilliwack power play, the Spruce Kings tied the game on a shorthanded marker by Bryant Christian, and 15 seconds after that took the lead for good when Chad

Staley scored. Starting Chiefs goalie Tremblay was pulled after the first in favour of Halpenny who had a solid second, stopping all but one of 13 shots. But the Chiefs managed nothing on 12 shots and after two periods, the score remained 5-3 for the home team. The Chiefs bounced back in the third, but it was too little too late as they once again fell victim to porous defence and too many shots against. Kiefer McNaughton made the score 5-4 on a power-play goal at 9:41 of the third. Prince George iced things with a power play goal from Brent Lashuk at 10:30 and Staley’s second of the game 16 seconds later to make it 7-4. Each team would add one more goal, including a final power-play marker by Hand, and that’s how it ended. The game against the Spruce Kings was the second in two nights. The Chiefs lost Sunday night 4-1. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday but were postponed a day after a labour dispute at the City of Prince George. The Chiefs’ record sits at 7-25-1-2. Their next game is again against the Spruce Kings at Prospera Centre Dec. 20. Then, in the final game before Christmas, the 7-25-2-1 Trail Smoke Eaters roll into town for a game Dec. 21.

Lavish, sexy

& liberated ‘Bursting like corsets with unbridled desire’

T

he University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) theatre program presents Age of Arousal, a new play by Canadian theatre artist Linda Griffiths in the new year. The play’s unique script is “wildly inspired” by George Gissing’s 1893 novel The Odd Women. Griffiths has written a “lavish, sexy ensemble piece about the forbidden and gloriously liberated self.” Set in the Victorian age, when women outnumber men by the thousands, and many women will never have the option of marriage, Griffiths shows us an early suffragette, Mary, who runs a typing school for women with her younger lover, Rhoda. These new women take on three siblings as their pupils—spinsters Virginia, Alice and their sensual sister Monica—and find their liberal

rules and ambitions challenged in every way. When Mary’s cousin Everard joins the scene, discoveries of passion, marriage, and the rights and roles of women are “bursting like corsets with unbridled desire.” Age of Arousal is directed by UFV Theatre faculty member Ian Fenwick. The production features a cast of six student actors and more than 20 students working in backstage roles to gain valuable skills as they become trained theatre practitioners. ◗ Age of Arousal runs Jan. 8 to 26 at the UFV Performance Theatre located at the old UFV campus, 45635 Yale Rd. There will be two half-price previews on Jan. 8 and 9. Opening night is Jan. 10 and 7:30 p.m. performances continue on Jan. 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25. There are two matinees at 2 p.m. on Jan. 19 and 26. There is also one weekday matinee at noon on Jan. 17. Ticket prices range from $11 to $23 plus service fees and are available online at ufv.ca/theatre or through the UFV Theatre box office at 604-795-2814 and theatre@ufv.ca.
